Due to the lack of essential understanding of asphalt foaming behavior, engineering problems such as mix design failure and unstable performance of foamed asphalt cold recycling mixtures are prone to occur. This paper develops a novel asphalt foaming performance testing system and proposes new indicators to evaluate the effectiveness of asphalt foaming. The 3D spatial coordinates of different points on the foamed asphalt surface and the height of the foamed asphalt corresponding to these coordinates can be continuously monitored by binocular ranging equipment. By analyzing these dynamic parameters, the application effect of binocular ranging technology, the expansion characteristics and dynamic evolution rules of foamed asphalt in the spatial domain are analyzed. Results showed that by a combined use of the designed binocular ranging system and new evaluation indicators, the foaming ability and post-foaming stability of asphalt can be accurately assessed by comprehensively reflecting the expansion characteristics of foamed asphalt. To achieve a more efficient mix design of foamed asphalt cold recycling mixture, the correlation between asphalt foaming indicators and the road performance of the mixture could be an important focus of the next stage. The presence of convex corners will affect the earth pressure calculation, but there is a paucity of studies on calculating the ground pressure of convex corners in excavation engineering. To address this issue, equilateral convex corners are divided into two types according to the relative relationship between the side length size of equilateral convex corners and the excavation depth, and their respective earth pressure calculation model is established. The microelement static equilibrium equation is set by the horizontal layer analysis method, and then the equations for calculating active earth pressure strength, active earth pressure, and active earth pressure acting points on the equilateral convex corners are derived. The example analysis and comparative Plaxis three-dimensional (3D) finite-element verification show that the friction angle in the soil is an important factor in distinguishing between two kinds of equilateral convex corners, and the active earth pressure strength, the active earth pressure, and the acting point will be affected by the side length and rotation angle, where the influence of the side length on the active earth pressure strength is relatively small. The active earth pressure may show a variety of different variation laws affected by soil parameters. The acting point will move in both directions of the plane with the change of side length and rotation angle. The theoretical calculations of active earth pressure agree with the results of three-dimensional simulations, which may explain the rationality and practicality of the theoretical method in this paper. The traditional approach to formulating building codes often is slow and labor-intensive, and may struggle to keep pace with the rapid evolution of technology and domain findings. Overcoming such challenges necessitates a methodology that streamlines the modernization of codal provisions. This paper proposes a machine learning (ML) approach to append a variety of codal provisions, including those of empirical, statistical, and theoretical natures. In this approach, a codal provision (i.e., equation) is analyzed to trace its properties (e.g., engineering intuition and causal logic). Then a ML model is tailored to preserve the same properties and satisfy a collection of similarity and performance measures until declared equivalent to the provision at hand. The resulting ML model harnesses the predictive capabilities of ML while arriving at predictions similar to the codal provision used to train the ML model, and hence it becomes possible to use in lieu of the codal expression. This approach was examined successfully for seven structural engineering phenomena contained within various building codes, including those in North America and Australia. The current construction industry for civil and structural engineering is considered to be one of the growing industries in the world. With the push toward a more digitized industry, emerging trends such as additive manufacturing and the use of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology, along with consumer demand, are resulting in automated development with multiple benefits. Successful applications for small-scale construction projects that have implemented 3D printing have shown improvements in cost, production time, and design freedom and complexity. However, for large-scale applications, there are various limitations and factors hindering the adoption of additive manufacturing technologies. In this paper, a systematic literature survey of recent 3D printing technologies was conducted specific to the area of construction engineering, and the various techniques, materials, software, and technical and nontechnical aspects were analyzed. The key applications and their benefits are outlined, and their potential for large-scale applications is articulated. Future research areas for these components are suggested to strengthen the technical readiness and feasibility of adopting 3D printing technology in construction engineering and industries. Aiming at the condition of shield tunnel undercrossing the foundation of a pile group directly, using the settlement and inclination of the pile caps as the evaluation index, the reinforcing effect of the pregrouting of the soil around the pile foundation, the deep hole grouting behind the tunnel segment, and the combination of the two reinforcement methods are analyzed through three-dimensional numerical simulation. A reasonable reinforcement scheme is found and applied to practical engineering. The results show that for the pregrouting reinforcement of the soil around the pile, the optimal reinforcement scheme is to extend 0.5 m around the pile cap in the plane and vertically from the surroundings of the pile cap to 1/3 of the pile length below the bottom of the cap. When deep hole grouting reinforcement is adopted, larger reinforcement range and a certain range of radial reinforcement radius of tunnel section will result in a better effect of reinforcement. The combination of the two schemes is better than the single use of one. The practical application results show that the combined reinforcement scheme can effectively control the influence of shield tunnel excavation on the pile foundation of an elevated waiting hall. During tunnel excavation, stress redistribution is caused by disturbance of the surrounding rock; when the stress exceeds the strength of rock mass, the surrounding rock enters the postpeak deformation stage and then produces the strain-softening effect. This effect will lead to a decrease in rock mass strength, the expansion of the fracture zone, and a decrease in stability. To further study the influence of strain-softening effect on the loose circle of the surrounding rock, the strain-softening factor is introduced into the unified strength criterion. On this basis, the triaxial test with elastic–plastic theoretical analysis is combined, and the strain-softening model based on the unified strength criterion is proposed. Based on this strain-softening model, the stress state of the postpeak plastic zone of the surrounding rock after excavation is studied and analyzed, and the theoretical calculation formula of the loose circle radius considering the strain-softening effect is obtained. Through theoretical calculations and engineering examples, the influence of strain-softening effect and support reaction force on the radius of the surrounding rock loose circle is compared and analyzed. The results show that: (1) the strain-softening effect further deteriorates the mechanical properties of the surrounding rock in the plastic zone, the stability of the surrounding rock is reduced, and the radius of the loose circle is increased, but closer to the measured values; and (2) with the increase of supporting reaction force, the constraint ability of surrounding rock deformation increases and the radius of the loose circle gradually reduces. Therefore, by enhancing the residual strength of the surrounding rock, controlling the radius of the loose circle of the surrounding rock by improving the strength of the supporting structure, and performing primary support on time, the stability of the surrounding rock can be increased. Practical Applications: During tunnel excavation, the process disrupts the surrounding rock, causing stress redistribution. When the local stress surpasses the strength of the rock, it results in damage, forming a loose circle and triggering strain softening. At the same time, both contribute to the expansion of the loose circle, further compromising the stability of the surrounding rock. Analyzing the distribution pattern of loose circles in the tunnel-surrounding rock considering the strain-softening effect, enhancing the residual strength of the surrounding rock, and improving the strength of the supporting structure while implementing the initial support in time can effectively control the expansion of the loose circle and improve the stability of the surrounding rock. This investigative study explored the potential of a novel approach called the modular insulated concrete core—advanced and optimized panelized production system (MICADO) method within the realm of modular structures, focusing on its parametric development. As emerging high-performance concrete, the engineered cementitious composite (ECC) has demonstrated excellent application potential in civil engineering. With the wide application of ECC, it not only excels in the tension state and the structural elements but also in the more complex stress state of nonuniform confinement. For a reliable and economic ECC element design, understanding the dilation behavior of ECC is crucial under complicated stress conditions. This paper presents an experimental investigation and a detailed discussion of the ECC dilation characteristics under different confinement rigidities. The authors evaluate the effects of column parameters, such as different types of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, confinement levels, and cross-sectional shapes. Test results indicate that the ECC dilation amplitude (secant dilation) under FRP confinement is less than that of concrete due to fiber bridge effects within ECC. However, the maximum dilation rate (tangent dilation ratio) shows an opposite trend. Based on the data analysis in this study, a new lateral strain-to-axial strain model was proposed, which can predict the dilation behavior of FRP-confined ECC with nonuniform confining pressure. The proposed model not only accurately captures the dilation process of FRP-confined ECC but also precisely predicts its ultimate strain. In addition, the existing peak strength and ultimate strength models were also evaluated by the ECC test results. In the era of automation and artificial intelligence, some problems in the petroleum industry can be efficiently solved by machine-learning models based on big data. Previous researchers have addressed truly precise methods to evaluate reserves from accessible well-test data, although enormous time, effort, and cost were required. However, due to the lack of sufficient conventional material balance (CMB) test data for a large number of wells in the Su Dong (SD) gas field, only 12 wells (0.99%) were generally suitable for previous methods. We substituted the fully built-up reservoir pressures used in CMB with those converted from shut-in casing-pressure data. Suffering from data noise caused by pressure fluctuation, only 22.91% of the plots were linear. The nonlinear plots were enhanced into linear plots by denoising and smoothening according to engineering knowledge. Machine-learning models were developed to perform the enhancement automatically, which constructed an adaptive and feasible workflow. The model improved the percentage of applicable wells to 68.16% (824 out of 1,209) and achieved considerable precision for reserve evaluation. The proposed method is much more suitable than CMB in gas fields featuring unstable production status and provides feasible reserve evaluation. To improve the swelling–shrinkage characteristics of expansive soil, excessive amounts of cement are often used to solidify it. This study aims to solidify expansive soil by using industrial graphene (G) and graphene oxide (GO)-modified cement to avoid the problem of environmental pollution resulting from the excessive use of cement. A series of unconsolidated-undrained triaxial and microstructure tests were conducted to investigate the engineering properties and micromechanisms of G and GO composite cement-solidified soils. Testing results showed that the deviatoric stress–strain curves of G and GO composite cement-solidified soils showed softening types. The compressive strength, toughness, shear strength, and ductility of cement-solidified soil were significantly improved by adding both G and GO. G and GO not only acted as a template to promote cement hydration and generate regular hydration products but also played a role in pore filling. As inelastic design for wind is embraced by the engineering community, there is an increasing demand for computational tools that enable the investigation of the nonlinear behavior of wind-excited structures and subsequent development of performance criteria. To address this need, a probabilistic collapse assessment framework for steel structures is proposed in this paper. The framework is based on the integration of a high-fidelity fiber-based nonlinear structural modeling environment with a wind-tunnel-informed stochastic wind load model to perform nonlinear time history analysis. General uncertainty is propagated using a stratified sampling scheme enabling the efficient estimation of reliabilities associated with rare events. The adopted models for simulating high-fidelity nonlinear structural behavior were found, in general, to be adequate for capturing phenomena, including progressive yielding, buckling, and low-cycle fatigue, that are essential for wind induced collapse analysis. In particular, the adopted fatigue model was found to be capable of predicting damage and potential fiber/section fracture associated with non–fully reversing stress-strain cycles that are characteristic of wind loading. Through illustration on a 45-story archetype steel building, critical discussions on the types of observed collapse mechanisms, the difference between along-wind and across-wind nonlinear behavior, reliabilities associated with first yield, and collapse are presented. Geopolymers have been long recognized as the next-generation building material due to environmental reasons. However, geopolymers are inherently brittle and usually require high-temperature curing. This paper was intended to develop a ductile engineered geopolymer composite (EGC) under ambient curing conditions. Two types of metakaolin powder with different particle sizes were applied as the solid precursor. The tensile, compressive, and flexural behaviors of EGC with different mix designs were investigated. It was concluded that the combinational application of coarse and fine metakaolin is conducive to the tensile and compressive behaviors of EGC materials. As the alkali concentrations increased from 6 to 14 mol/L , the tensile and compressive strength of EGC increased, whereas the tensile ductility of EGC decreased gradually. Also, the SiO2/Na2O molar ratio had negligible influence on the tensile behavior of EGC, whereas the compressive strength decreased with the increase of SiO2/Na2O molar ratios. A numerical model to predict the flexural behavior of EGC was also proposed, and the accuracy was verified with experimental results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Institutional environment shapes the success of enterprise digital transformation, but its impact pathways, to our best knowledge, have received relatively little investigation, particularly in the fields of architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC). Grounded in neoinstitutional theory, this study conducted a fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis of the effects of institutional pressure on digital transformation. The study yielded three results. First, the interaction of coercive, normative, and mimetic pressures can drive the digital transformation of AEC enterprises. For example, facing the digital delivery requirements of stakeholders and the pressure of digital collaboration in the supply chain, digital leaders in an enterprise will quickly apply internal pressure to raise the digitalization level. Also, in a highly competitive industry environment, the pressure to imitate the excellent digital transformation strategies of other enterprises comes with it. In a less competitive environment, however, digital leaders are the main pressure source to promote the digital transformation of enterprises. Second, we find that stakeholder vision, supply chain collaboration needs, and digital leaders are the key sources of digital transformation pressure. Third, high or low digitization levels cannot simply be explained by the opposite cause. Offering a new understanding of coercive, mimetic, and normative pressures on the complex digital transformation pathways of AEC enterprises, this study has implications for enterprises formulating digital transformation strategies. The findings point to the importance of corporate strategic change in the current digital environment, identify the institutional factors driving digital transformation, and will help AEC industry enterprises with different main businesses to respond to institutional pressures and improve the effectiveness of digital transformation through more targeted measures. This study can assist engineering enterprises around the world to develop digital transformation strategies. By exploring the complex causal relationships between the institutional environment and the digital transformation of engineering enterprises, this study provides a strong empirical foundation for new initiatives and policies to achieve high digitalization levels. Natural geotextiles both woven and nonwoven have proved to be beneficial in stabilizing the weak subgrade by extending the service life of pavement and reducing the cost of construction. Nonwoven geotextiles can be used as separator in pavements as they allow in-plane permeability, but their tensile strength is low. In this study, an attempt is made to develop eco-friendly needle-punched coir latex composite sheets as an alternative to nonwoven coir geotextiles. Three types of products were developed by the impregnation of nonwoven needle-punched fabric with prevulcanized latex having densities 400, 600, and 800 grams per square meter (GSM). An experimental investigation on the effect of latex content on the mechanical properties of coir composites revealed that latex impregnation improves the mechanical properties of all coir composites and composites with 50% latex content exhibited maximum performance. Strength and drainage characteristics of reinforced soil-aggregate system were studied to evaluate the potential of coir composites as a separator in low volume roads by conducting the California bearing ratio (CBR) test, permeability, and transmissivity tests. The performance of the developed coir composites was compared with nonwoven coir felt and woven coir geotextile. It was found that 800 GSM coir composite showed 47% improvement in performance when compared to 400 GSM woven coir geotextile which showed only 40% performance improvement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the results from a prediction event, organized by the University of Western Australia (UWA) and the National Geotechnical Centrifuge Facility (NGCF), and performed as part of the International Symposium on Frontiers in Offshore Geotechnics to assess uncertainty in predicting the monotonic and cyclic lateral response of conductors. Geotechnical professionals from around the world were invited to predict the response of a model conductor (a flexible pile) subjected to a series of loading sequences in a centrifuge. A normally consolidated fine-grained soil was used in the tests, which was characterized by soil elements and in-flight T-bar penetrometer testing. While some participants provided accurate predictions, the mean response was an overestimate of the monotonic and cyclic load at the pile head, which was significant for large and very small displacements. An analysis of the submissions is presented to quantify the variability of the predictions received, assess the consequences of each design, and relay the uncertainty associated with engineering judgment in design. Although there have been several studies about using recycled aggregates to construct recycled aggregate base (RAB) layers, there is a lack of information about the effects of gradation of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) materials on the performance of such layers. There is also limited information available regarding the use of RCA and recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) materials together in RAB layers. In this study, three test cells were constructed with RAB layers using two different RCA materials with different gradations and a blend of RCA and RAP materials, and another cell was constructed with a natural aggregate base layer. Physical characteristics of the base layer aggregates were determined, and resilient modulus (MR) tests were performed. A series of falling weight deflectometer (FWD) tests were performed in the field, and changes in air and soil temperatures over time were monitored. This paper presents the findings from a study of the breakdown of project success criteria. An exploration of the evolution of studies on the success of engineering projects over decades was the basis for a project success definition proposal. Using a comprehensive literature review of success criteria for engineering projects, a list of 133 different success criteria was identified. Those criteria were analyzed to develop an integrated framework of project success criteria, describing its hierarchical decomposition. Such a breakdown structure could serve as a starting point when setting project success criteria for a specific project, because the importance of criteria will be context dependent. Practitioners or stakeholders could discuss and tailor it based on specific features of engineering projects or specific needs and interests. Generally, criteria have evolved from simple work-related factors to focusing more on the complex benefits of the projects. Such an evolving success definition has implications for further studies of project success and might contribute toward a long-term vision in which all projects will be delivered successfully. This paper is designed to help readers understand the state of innovation in hydrologic research and relevant lessons from the popular literature of business. We use citations to a paper as a measure of the impact in an area of research. Looking at the citations to all papers for a given year in a journal, they follow a power-law relationship, poorly cited papers being common and highly cited papers being rare. The power law develops because the selection of papers to cite is being biased by the citations of others. Quite remarkably, the slopes of these power laws are the same from journal to journal. Research strands have a life cycle that begins with an important, paradigm-shifting paper. Early papers that also contribute to an emerging research strand are usually well cited. As the number of papers in a strand increases, their impact begins to fall off. Eventually, interest in the strand wanes and researchers drift off to the next opportunity. It is essential for scientists to understand where their research lies in terms of a growth curve and to reposition it as needed. The business literature is clear that success stems from innovation rather than copycat products, with anticipation as a necessary ingredient. Informal indications are that most research scientists are content in their mediocrity. Knowing that a research line is not impacting seems not of a reason to change it. Urban development is promoting aboveground-underground city integration. Underground engineering and surrounding buildings and infrastructure form an underground engineering environment (UEE). In critical disasters, damage to the UEE not only causes chain damage to the surroundings but also aggravates urban resilience. Few studies have focused on UEE resilience and its disaster reduction. This study investigated the emergency restorability of the UEE to fill this research gap. First, we classified the restoration levels based on UEE damage patterns. Second, we performed subregion optimization based on cast-in-situ (CIS) restoration, and technical optimization by utilizing prefabrication and assembly technology (PAT). Third, the CIS/PAT UEE emergency restorability functions were constructed based on these optimizations and the local assembly capacity. Finally, the performance of the CIS/PAT restoration, optimization effect, and local assembly capacity were analyzed using a case study. The results indicated that (1) meticulous subregion optimization significantly reduced environmental work with a 13.5% speed up; (2) technical optimization incorporating PAT had the highest efficiency for improving UEE emergency restorability; (3) PAT restoration enhanced the structural resilience and functional resilience of the UEE by at least 28.34% and 62.27% over CIS restoration, respectively; (4) upper and lower thresholds exist for assembly speed in PAT restoration; (5) there exist three types of assembly capacity in PAT restoration: ring-quantity-sensitive, ring-weight-sensitive, and insensitive; and (6) the adaptive schemes maximized the performance of different local assembly capacities in PAT restoration. As awareness around building energy consumption increases, practitioners are encouraged to consider performance aspects regarding the built environment more closely and find ways to improve its efficiency. Improvements in building information modeling (BIM) and building performance simulation (BPS) tools present opportunities to facilitate information communication with a wider range of stakeholders. The building sector can benefit from the integration of performance informatics; however, there has been limited success in utilizing available technologies that promote data integration and management in favor of enriching our knowledge and understanding of buildings as artifacts of information. This phenomenon was investigated by conducting a survey, together with a review of relevant literature, to depict the relevant challenges and opportunities for the architecture, engineering, construction, and owner-operated (AECO) industry, as it undergoes digital transformation, as well as the working practices that have formed around them. It is argued that the current tools available to practitioners do not support effective data serialization between design and analytics processes, affecting the collaboration between team members. Finally, a series of functional goals are proposed to support a higher level of reliability in the ways information is mobilized, by rethinking the technologies and methods for organizing information systems. A key underlying challenge in today's model-driven approach to engineering is how progress and level of effort are being measured and reported. Recent definitions such as level of development enable project teams to track completeness of information in building information modeling (BIM)-driven processes; yet, there are no established processes or metrics to reliably measure progress or track productivity of a model-driven engineering process as a function of the maturity of the model and/or the data that supports the engineering process. To address this gap in knowledge, this paper presents a discrete set of model maturity index (MMI) definitions to measure progress in engineering work, per modeling discipline. Using these MMI definitions, a model maturity risk index (Model MRI) toolkit was created to track maturity of an engineering process at the granularity of work breakdown structure locations. The MMI toolkit also reports risk in achieving certain MMI levels per modeling discipline. To benchmark maturity of the modeling work per project milestone or model review session and to establish workflows for tracking progress, an addendum to the modeling execution plan (ModelXP) is presented. New productivity and project controls metrics for tracking modeling work are also introduced. The developed definitions, toolkit, and addendum to ModelXP were validated through exhaustive surveys and charrette tests with project stakeholders involved in capital projects. The role of the MMI definitions and Model MRI toolkit in providing project controls insight and proactive management opportunities in real-world projects is discussed in detail. This paper reports on a controlled experiment carried out to investigate the differences between novices and experts during the review of papers for engineering journals. A total of 17 young faculty members with PhD degrees were given instruction on the peer review process, and then had to review a short paper, for which the actual reviews were available. The quality of the reviews was assessed using criteria developed by editors of medical journals. The evidence obtained from this study helps to identify the critical areas in which reviewers fail to perform a good review, and then to develop strategies to overcome such limitations. Women's representation in construction and engineering continues to be low. Drawing on the stewardship theory, we investigated how women in the top management team and women in management drive the appointment and promotion of women at management and nonmanagement levels, respectively. We used a time lag research design and archival data from 495 construction and engineering organizations operating in Australia. The results of structural equation modeling suggest positive relationships between women's representation in management and both the appointments and promotions of women in nonmanagement roles. The findings also suggest some unpredicted relationships: women's representation in management is linked to the appointments of women managers, and hiring more female managers is linked to the promotion of more female managers. The condition assessment of existing buildings with special reference to the analysis of degradation level has been extensively and fruitfully applied in the field of maintenance and monitoring. This paper presents a methodology for detecting structural degradation of the building that can be implemented in a decision support system consisting in a platform connected with smart devices. The proposed procedure is suitable for calculating the degradation of the building through a set of key performance indices and an optimized analytic hierarchy process. In addition, the methodology is calibrated through the well-known Tuutti model to consider the damage evolution of reinforcements' corrosion. The results show that this calibration increases the accuracy of the assessment but reduces the robustness of the method. Moreover, an optimal calibration point is identified by exploiting the results of a set of case studies performed in Italy, Portugal, and Brazil. This study considers the content of the papers published by ASCE’s Journal of Management in Engineering, which has witnessed a growth in number of papers and breadth of participation, particularly of international origin, during the 1985–2002 period. The content is analyzed in two main dimensions: the type of subject and its composing topics, and the type of contributors to the journal. The analysis shows the evolution of the engineering management discipline as represented in the journal. Over the years the discipline has been enriched by an increasing number of contributions on corporate strategies and programs, organizational change, and cultures issues, as well as a growing interest in project management topics, such as quality planning and evaluation of alternative project delivery systems. The September 28, 2018 earthquake and tsunami, which occurred north of Palu City, Indonesia, attracted widespread interest from the scientific community due to the unusually large tsunami that occurred after a strike-slip earthquake with a relatively small moment magnitude (MW = 7.5). To understand the structural performance of buildings and infrastructure under hydrodynamic loads and their associated effects, the authors conducted field surveys in Palu City. Light wooden frame constructions and masonry infill walls were common in the area, some of which were severely damaged by the earthquake and tsunami. Reinforced concrete structures remained predominantly intact, although they suffered soil-related issues such as scour around rigid building members. Local structural failures caused by the loss of supporting soil were also observed during the field survey, resulting in an overall reduction in the stability of the inspected structures. Based on the observations made, knowledge gaps and research needs concerning coastal and structural scouring are discussed. This paper addresses one of the costs of new bridges, i.e., the cost of doing the preliminary engineering (PE). This particular aspect of cost has largely been neglected because of the difficulty in obtaining appropriate data. Typically, PE costs are determined as a percentage of construction costs, disregarding other project-specific parameters. Bridge projects let by the North Carolina (NC) DOT between 2001 and 2009 were reviewed. From an analysis of these 461 projects, the writers developed statistical models linking variation in PE costs with distinctive project parameters. The primary contribution this paper makes to the body of knowledge is the finding that PE cost estimates for bridge projects are commonly and significantly underestimated. The writers found that bridge projects exhibited a mean PE cost ratio of 28%. This result is significantly greater than the percentage used in practice. An investigation of data sources related to bridge projects, a description of regression techniques applied to predict the PE cost of such projects, and an assessment of the predictive performance of models are addressed in this paper. New knowledge contributions include identification of key factors affecting the PE costs of bridges, illustration of how those key factors enabled us to predict PE costs of future projects, and discussion of the data collection problems that hindered model development. Funicular geometries, which follow the idealized shapes of hanging chains under a given loading, are recognized as materially efficient structural solutions because they exhibit no bending under design loading, usually self-weight. However, there are circumstances in which nonstructural conditions make a funicular geometry difficult or impossible. This paper presents a new design philosophy, based on graphic statics, that shows how bending moments in a nonfunicular two-dimensional curved geometry can be eliminated by adding forces through an external posttensioning system. An interactive parametric tool is introduced for finding the layout of a posttensioning tendon for any structural geometry. Project employees suffer increasing pressures brought by uncertainty, complexity, and temporality, especially in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. Complicated by both need-related factors and stress-related factors, a variable-centered approach to test the main effects of stressors on employee well-being cannot detect distinct configurations that may lead to the same outcome. Combining self-determination theory (SDT) and conservation of resources theory (COR), our study investigated the configural impacts of job stressors and psychological needs on employee well-being in Chinese AEC projects. By collecting 265 questionnaires from 27 Chinese AEC projects, we conducted a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA), and found that (1) the combination of SDT and COR provides multiple equifinal configurations sufficient to produce high or low employee well-being, and SDT is more salient than COR for the interpretation of well-being in AEC projects; (2) counterintuitively, role overload and role conflict can be contributive to employee well-being when certain psychological needs are satisfied; role ambiguity needs to be avoided for its salient threats to well-being; and (3) need for relatedness is particularly salient in all configurations for employee well-being in Chinese culture. We also found evidence for causal asymmetry for high and low well-being. Our person-centered approach yielded more theoretically consistent results than a variable-centered approach. This paper contains a summary of the developments and applications of the two-dimensional discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA2D) method regarding the modeling of rock-mass dynamics problems. Reviews on the control parameter value selections in DDA2D calculations and the developments and applications of the DDA2D regarding the analysis of rock slope failures, landslides, rockfall, some earthquake-related problems, and so forth, are performed. Research on the DDA2D for three basic rock-mass dynamics problems, such as block dynamic sliding, stress wave propagation, and dynamic fracturing, are specially stated. The modeling of rock blasting, a typical exact rock dynamics problem, is selected as a representative application example of the DDA method to be presented. Generally, the DDA2D has shown to be a powerful numerical method for the modeling of rock-mass dynamics. However, one should pay enough attention to the value selections of those important user-supplied control parameters, as well as to other important factors, such as block size and boundary conditions, for rock dynamics simulations, which have been specially addressed in the paper. Recently, formal approaches to interface management (IM) have been adopted in a number of large-scale engineering and construction (E&C) projects. However, understanding of the role and performance of IM practices in E&C projects is quite limited today. Given this circumstance, this paper attempts to understand the effectiveness of IM practices in E&C projects from the perspective of dealing with project complexity. To fulfill the objective, data on project complexity and IM practices were collected from 45 large-scale E&C projects and analyzed using quantitative analysis methods such as principal component analysis and linear regression. The data analysis revealed that current formal IM practices employed in E&C projects are effective for mitigating the adverse impact of project complexity originating from uncertainty in scope and communication and large numbers of stakeholders; however, they are not as effective for dealing with project complexity originating from large numbers of engineered items. Recent developments in technology, such as building information models (BIMs), immersive displays, and mobile computing tools, have enabled changes in the means and locations of communication throughout the building architecture, engineering, construction, and operation (AECO) industry. This paper presents the findings from an exploratory study regarding the planning of physical media for effective communication in conjunction with the developments in BIM use. While literature shows that there has been noticeable impact of physical media on communication, there has been little evidence of consistent and thorough planning and evaluation of media for investment or project level planning. The exploratory study identifies media synchronicity theory as a starting point for identifying the media needs by task for more effective planning of communication, as well as potential considerations unique to the AECO industry. This paper suggests the methodology to follow when conducting discrete-event simulation (DES) studies in construction engineering and management research. Emphasis is made on the steps that, due to the uniqueness of the construction environment, are particularly important yet are not discussed extensively in the general DES literature. Guidelines are provided to determine what aspects of a DES study demand a rigorous application of the theory depending on the purpose of the study. The paper concludes with the importance of properly understanding the probabilistic concepts upon which DES relies and on coupling this understanding with engineering judgment as a key for successful use of DES in construction research. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a mathematical method based on production theory and the principles of linear programming. It enables one to assess how efficiently a firm, organization, agency, or such other unit uses the resources available (inputs) to generate a set of outputs relative to other units in the data set. Recent papers by different writers present different applications of DEA in the transportation engineering domain. All of these papers are published in transportation journals. These papers are mainly aimed at addressing the transportation-related issues and thus do not focus too much on the DEA concept itself. It can be asserted that DEA is very likely to be used more and more in the transportation engineering domain. Given this, there is a need for the transportation professionals to fully understand the DEA concept. It is essential for such a community to identify cases where the application of this innovative and powerful method can be useful to help the decision-making process, to accurately apply DEA in a particular setting, to derive meaningful conclusions from the obtained results, and to acknowledge the limitations of DEA in certain cases so as to approach the results with caution. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate to the civil engineering, more specifically to the transportation engineering community the use of this powerful approach in performing comparative performance measurement. Within this context, this paper will address a transportation-related problem by using the DEA approach. Different from the other papers containing transportation-related DEA applications (as mentioned above), this paper will discuss, in detail, the steps that need to be taken to generate the DEA model and solve it. Drilling is a material removal process that introduces the plastic deformation and stresses around the hole. When large amounts of drilling stresses are added up, there will be deformation in the aerostructural assembly. This paper presents an aerostructural assembly deformation predicting method considering drilling-induced stresses around the riveting hole. Drilling-induced stresses are simulated with additional temperature fields. The assembly of the two riveted plates are considered to illustrate effects of drilling-induced stresses coupling and validate the proposed model. The simulation and experimental results show that one hole's drilling-induced stresses have negligible impact on the riveting deformation, while a lot of holes' drilling-induced stresses must be considered in assembling. When a lot of drillinginduced stresses are added up, there will be significant deformation in the aircraft's structure. The deformation predicting method outlined in this paper will enhance the understanding of the compliant components deformation resulting from the drilling stresses and help systematically improve the precision control efficiency in the civil aircraft industry. One key issue in the simulation of bare electrodynamic tethers (EDTs) is the accurate and fast computation of the collected current, an ambient dependent operation necessary to determine the Lorentz force for each time step. This paper introduces a novel semianalytical solution that allows researchers to compute the current distribution along the tether efficient and effectively under orbital-motion-limited (OML) and beyond OML conditions, i.e., if tether radius is greater than a certain ambient dependent threshold. The method reduces the original boundary value problem to a couple of nonlinear equations. If certain dimensionless variables are used, the beyond OML effect just makes the tether characteristic length L* larger and it is decoupled from the current determination problem. Avalidation of the results and a comparison of the performance in terms of the time consumed is provided, with respect to a previous ad hoc solution and a conventional shooting method. Link-to-column connections in steel eccentrically braced frames must be capable of sustaining large cyclic forces and inelastic rotations. United States code provisions require that satisfactory performance of link-to-column connections be verified by testing under a prescribed loading protocol. However, there are few link-to-column connection details that have satisfied these testing criteria. This paper describes a pilot investigation of two promising link-to-column connection details, as follows: (1) the fillet welded connection, which uses fillet welds or a combination of fillet and groove welds between the link and the column flange; and (2) the supplemental web doubler connection, which reinforces the connection region using a pair of doubler plates in the first link web panel next to the column, parallel to but offset from the link web. These two details showed excellent performance in a series of eight tests. Currently, there is an urgent demand for more effective sealers to preserve the integrity and durability of concrete infrastructure in aggressive environments, such as bridge decks subjected to increasing traffic volume and increasing use of chloride-based deicers. To this end, this laboratory study explored the feasibility of employing graphene oxide and montmorillonite nanoclay to enhance the engineering performance of a penetrating sealer based on potassium methyl siliconate (PMS). The combined use of 0.15%-by-weight Na-montmorillonite nanoclay and 0.06%-by-weight graphene oxide in the PMS sealer resulted in the best performance, decreasing the water absorption and gas permeability coefficients. It also increased the water contact angle and viscosity, decreased the penetration depth of the PMS sealer, and reduced the scaling depth of mortar samples after freeze/thaw cycles. The improved protective performance of the nanomodified sealers can be attributed to the replacement of hydrophilic groups (─ OH) by hydrophobic groups (─ CH3) and changes in the micro-/nano-roughness of the sealed specimens induced by the admixed nanomaterials. In addition, thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the pozzolanic reaction between the nanoclay and the alkaline PMS sealer. Two empirical regression models were developed to quantify the relationship between the aforementioned performance parameters, which provided qualitative insights to guide the design and fabrication of nanomodified concrete sealers. The construction industry is a major player in the nation's economy. The complex nature of the construction industry, coupled with the challenges of global competitiveness and changing regulatory requirements, has created the need for providing higher levels of education, experience, and training for construction professionals. An essential and integral component of the required education and training must be the research training of undergraduate civil and construction students, encouraging them to pursue advanced education and research careers in this area. With this in mind, the writer developed a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) summer program at Western Michigan University that focuses on construction engineering and management issues and problems. This construction-oriented undergraduate research training program is the first REU site in the United States to be funded by the National Science Foundation. This paper will describe the structure of the REU program, the types of activities undertaken by the REU participants, and the results of the program evaluation and assessment.
