The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) 118th recommendation significantly reduced the threshold dose for cataract development from 8 to 0.5 Gy. Equivalent dose limits for the crystalline lenses of radiation workers are being reviewed for individual countries. Interventional radiology (IR) procedures are less invasive than surgery and have become widespread; however, there are concerns about exposure not only to patients but also to staff, including operators. Therefore, in this study, we used a human phantom to measure the near-lens dose of the operators (cardiologists, neurosurgeons and radiologists) and estimated the operator's lens dose for every major procedure in each clinical department; this was found to vary. Owing to the different imaging and fluoroscopy conditions of each department, and the varying ratio of fluoroscopy to radiography, it is necessary to measure the lens dose for each condition, as in this study. In addition, this study explains the differences between the protective effect of various safety equipment and the appropriate use of protective plates; it can contribute to the reduction of lens doses for operators. In multisite studies, differences in imaging acquisition systems could affect the reproducibility of the results when examining changes in brain function using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). This is also important for longitudinal studies, in which changes in equipment settings can occur. This study examined the reproducibility of functional connectivity (FC) metrics estimated from rs-fMRI data acquired using scanner receiver coils with different numbers of channels. This study involved 80 rs-fMRI datasets from 20 healthy volunteers scanned in two independent imaging sessions using both 12- and 32-channel coils for each session. We used independent component analysis (ICA) to evaluate the FC of canonical resting-state networks (RSNs) and graph theory to calculate several whole-brain network metrics. The effect of global signal regression (GSR) as a preprocessing step was also considered. Comparisons within and between receiver coils were performed. Irrespective of the GSR, RSNs derived from rs-fMRI data acquired using the same receiver coil were reproducible, but not from different receiver coils. However, both the GSR and the channel count of the receiver coil have discernible effects on the reproducibility of network metrics estimated using whole-brain network analysis. The data acquired using the 32-channel coil tended to have better reproducibility than those acquired using the 12-channel coil. Our findings suggest that the reproducibility of FC metrics estimated from rs-fMRI data acquired using different receiver coils showed some level of dependence on the preprocessing method and the type of analysis performed. Objective: The computed tomography cortical index (CTCI), computed tomography mandibular index (CTMI), and computed tomography index (inferior) [CTI(I)] are indexes obtained from cone-beam computed tomography images for the assessment of the mandibular cortex quality for implant planning or osteoporosis. However, cross-sectional image reconstruction for the measurements is labor-intensive. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a method to automatically reconstruct cross-sectional images and measure the cortex width in all areas inferior to the mental foramen (MF). Methods: Seventy-one women (mean age: 52.4 years; range: 20–78 years) were enrolled. They were divided into four age and CTCI groups, including females younger (FY) and females older (FO) than 50 years (C1: normal, C2: mild/moderate erosion, and C3: severe porosity). Automatic and manual measurements of CTMI and CTI(I) were compared, and the inter- and intraobserver agreements were assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). The relationships between CTMI or CTI(I) and CTCI were also assessed. Results: The mean processing times for reconstruction and measurements were 31.9 s and 1.22 s, respectively. ICCs for the comparison of automatic and manual measurements were 0.932 and 0.993 in the C1 and C2/C3 groups, respectively. Significant differences in CTMI and CTI(I) were observed between the FY or the FO-C1 and FO-C3 groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The automatic and manual measurements showed a strong agreement. The new method could drastically reduce routine clinical workload. Additionally, our method enables the measurement of the cortex width in all the mandibular bones inferior to the MF. Recent studies have demonstrated that connector hubs, regions considered critical for the flow of information across neural systems, are mostly involved in neurodegenerative dementia. Considering that aging can significantly affect the brain's intrinsic connectivity, identifying aging's impact on these regions' overall connection strength is important to differentiate changes associated with healthy aging from neurodegenerative disorders. Using resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from a carefully selected cohort of 175 healthy volunteers aging from 21 to 86 years old, we computed an intrinsic connectivity contrast (ICC) metric, which quantifies a region's overall connectivity strength, for whole brain, short-range, and long-range connections and examined age-related changes of this metric over the adult lifespan. We have identified a limited number of hub regions with ICC values that showed significant negative relationship with age. These include the medial precentral/midcingulate gyri and insula with both their short-range and long-range (and thus whole-brain) ICC values negatively associated with age, and the angular, middle frontal, and posterior cingulate gyri with their long-range ICC values mainly involved. Seed-based connectivity analyses further confirmed that these regions are connector hubs with connectivity profile that strongly overlapped with multiple large-scale brain networks. General cognitive performance was not associated with these hubs' ICC values. These findings suggest that even healthy aging could negatively impact the efficiency of regions critical for facilitating information transfer among different functional brain networks. White matter (WM) fiber bundles change dynamically with age. These changes could be driven by alterations in axonal diameter, axonal density, and myelin content. In this study, we applied a novel fixel‐based analysis (FBA) framework to examine these changes throughout the adult lifespan. Using diffusion‐weighted images from a cohort of 293 healthy volunteers (89 males/204 females) from ages 21 to 86 years old, we performed FBA to analyze age‐related changes in microscopic fiber density (FD) and macroscopic fiber morphology (fiber cross section [FC]). Our results showed significant and widespread age‐related alterations in FD and FC across the whole brain. Interestingly, some fiber bundles such as the anterior thalamic radiation, corpus callosum, and superior longitudinal fasciculus only showed significant negative relationship with age in FD values, but not in FC. On the other hand, some segments of the cerebello‐thalamo‐cortical pathway only showed significant negative relationship with age in FC, but not in FD. Analysis at the tract‐level also showed that major fiber tract groups predominantly distributed in the frontal lobe (cingulum, forceps minor) exhibited greater vulnerability to the aging process than the others. Differences in FC and the combined measure of FD and cross section values observed between sexes were mostly driven by differences in brain sizes although male participants tended to exhibit steeper negative linear relationship with age in FD as compared to female participants. Estimating organ absorbed doses in consideration of person-specific parameters is important for radiation protection in diagnostic nuclear medicine. This study proposes a straightforward method for estimating the organ dose that reflects a specific organ mass by scaling the reference organ dose using the inverse ratio of the specific organ mass to the reference organ mass. For the administration of radiopharmaceuticals labelled by 99mTc or 123 I, the organ doses for the liver, spleen, red marrow and thyroid obtained by the method were compared with those generated by a Monte Carlo simulation. The discrepancies were less than 14% for the liver, spleen and thyroid. Conversely, in some cases, the red marrow discrepancies were greater than 30% due to the wide distribution of red marrow in the trunk and head regions. In pulmonary angiography, the heartbeat creates artifacts that hinder extraction of blood vessel images in digital subtraction angiography. Remasking according to the cardiac phase of the angiogram may be effective but has yet to be automated. Here, automatic remasking was developed and assessed according to the cardiac phase from electrocardiographic information collected simultaneously with imaging. Manual remasking, fixed remasking, and our proposed automatic remasking were applied to 14 pulmonary angiography series from five participants with either chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension or pulmonary arteriovenous malformation. The processing time and extent of artifacts from the heartbeat were compared. In addition, the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) was measured from differential images between mask image groups before the injection of the contrast medium to investigate optimal mask images. The mean time required for automatic remasking was 4.7 s/series, a significant reduction in processing time compared with the mean of 266 s/series for conventional manual processing. A visual comparison of the different approaches showed virtually no misregistration artifacts from the heartbeat in manual or automatic remasking according to cardiac phase. The results from measuring the PSNR for differential images between mask image groups also showed that smaller cardiac phase difference and time difference between two images ensure higher PSNR (p < 0.01). X-ray image evaluation is commonly performed by determining the detective quantum efficiency (DQE). DQE is calculated with a presampled modulation transfer function (MTF), incident photon fluence, and digital noise power spectrum (NPS). Accurate evaluation of MTF, incident photon fluence, and NPS is important for precise DQE determination. In this study, we focused on the accuracy of the incident photon fluence in mammography. The incident photon fluence is calculated using the squared signal-to-noise ratio (SNRin2) value as specified in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 62220-1-2 report. However, the reported SNRin2 values were determined using a computer program, and the reported values may differ from those calculated from an X-ray spectrum that is measured with actual mammography equipment. Therefore, we evaluated the error range of reported SNRin2 values in mammography to assess the accuracy of the incident photon fluence. First, X-ray spectra from various mammography systems were measured with a CdTe spectrometer. Six mammographic X-ray units were used in this study. Second, the SNRin2 values were calculated from the measured X-ray spectra. The calculated values were compared to the reported values. The results show that the percentage differences between the calculated and reported SNRin2 values were within − 4.1% of each other. The results obtained in this study indicate that the SNRin2 values provided in the IEC report are a robust and convenient tool for calculating the incident photon fluence for DQE evaluation in mammography. The stability of the MRI scanner throughout a given study is critical in minimizing hardware-induced variability in the acquired imaging data set. However, MRI scanners do malfunction at times, which could generate image artifacts and would require the replacement of a major component such as its gradient coil. In this article, we examined the effect of low intensity, randomly occurring hardware-related noise due to a faulty gradient coil on brain morphometric measures derived from T1-weighted images and resting state networks (RSNs) constructed from resting state functional MRI. We also introduced a method to detect and minimize the effect of the noise associated with a faulty gradient coil. Finally, we assessed the reproducibility of these morphometric measures and RSNs before and after gradient coil replacement. Our results showed that gradient coil noise, even at relatively low intensities, could introduce a large number of voxels exhibiting spurious significant connectivity changes in several RSNs. However, censoring the affected volumes during the analysis could minimize, if not completely eliminate, these spurious connectivity changes and could lead to reproducible RSNs even after gradient coil replacement. Purpose The weighted computed tomography dose index ( CTDIw) uses measured CTDI values at the center and periphery of a cylindrical phantom. The CTDIw value is calculated using conventional, Bakalyar's, and Choi's weighting factors. However, these weighting factors were produced from only 16- and 32-cm-diameter cylindrical phantoms. This study aims to devise new weighting factors to provide more accurate average dose in the central cross-sectional plane of cylindrical phantoms over a wide range of object diameters, by using Monte Carlo simulations. Methods Simulations were performed by modeling a Toshiba Aquilion ONE CT scanner, in order to compute the cross-sectional dose profiles of polymethyl methacrylate ( PMMA) cylindrical phantoms of each diameter (8-40 cm at 4-cm steps), for various tube voltages and longitudinal beam widths. Two phantom models were simulated, corresponding to the CTDI100 method and the method recommended by American Association of Physicists in Medicine ( AAPM) task group 111. The dose-computation PMMA cylinders of 1 mm diameter were located between the phantom surfaces and the centers at intervals of 1 mm, from which cross-sectional dose profiles were calculated. By using linear least-squares fits to the obtained cross-sectional dose profiles data, we determined new weighting factors to estimate more accurate average doses in the PMMA cylindrical phantoms by using the CTDIw equation: CTDIw = Wcenter ・ CTDIcenter + Wperiphery ・ CTDIperiphery. In order to demonstrate the validity of the devised new weighting factors, the percentage difference between average dose and CTDIw value was evaluated for the weighting factors (conventional, Bakalyar's, Choi's, and devised new weighting factors) in each calculated cross-sectional dose profile. Results With the use of linear least-squares techniques, new weighting factors (Wcenter = 3/8 and Wperiphery = 5/8 where Wcenter and Wperiphery are weighting factors for CTDIcenter and CTDIperiphery) were determined. The maximum percentage differences between average dose and CTDIw value were 16, −12, −8, and −6% for the conventional, Bakalyar's, Choi's, and devised new weighting factors, respectively. Conclusions We devised new weighting factors (Wcenter = 3/8 and Wperiphery = 5/8) to provide more accurate average dose estimation in PMMA cylindrical phantoms over a wide range of diameter. The CTDIw equation with devised new weighting factors could estimate average dose in PMMA cylindrical phantoms with a maximum difference of −6%. The results of this study can estimate the average dose in PMMA cylindrical phantoms more accurately than the conventional weighting factors (Wcenter = 1/3 and Wperiphery = 2/3). It is commonly thought that UV or visible-light luminescence imaging of biological subjects during X-ray irradiation at the energy below 120 keV is impossible because the secondary electrons produced in this energy range do not emit Cerenkov light. Contrary to this consensus, we found UV or visible-light luminescence imaging of the subjects were possible with X-ray irradiations of this energy range. We placed one of the biological subjects in a black box; visible-light luminescence images were measured with a high-sensitivity, cooled charge coupled device (CCD) camera during X-ray irradiation at energy below 120 keV. We also conducted the imaging of air without subjects during irradiation of the same X-ray. The biological subjects emitted visible-light luminescence, and the imaging was possible with the irradiation of the X-ray below 120 keV. The luminescence images were observed in only the X-ray irradiated areas. Also air luminescence images could be obtained and the intensity of the luminescence measured from the images was proportionally increased with the exposure dose. UV or visible-light luminescence imaging of biological subjects was possible during X-ray irradiations lower energy than the Cerenkov-light threshold. The phenomenon was different from general X-ray fluorescence because wavelength of the luminescence is UV or visible-light. The luminescence imaging method is promising for estimating the irradiated area with X-ray, which could be used for interventional radiology (IVR). The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) task group 204 has recommended the use of size-dependent conversion factors to calculate size-specific dose estimate (SSDE) values from volume computed tomography dose index (CTDI) values. However, these conversion factors do not consider the effects of 320-detector-row volume computed tomography (CT) examinations or the new CT dosimetry metrics proposed by AAPM task group 111. This study aims to investigate the influence of these examinations and metrics on the conversion factors reported by AAPM task group 204, using Monte Carlo simulations. Simulations were performed modelling a Toshiba Aquilion ONE CT scanner, in order to compute dose values in water for cylindrical phantoms with 8-40-cm diameters at 2-cm intervals for each scanning parameter (tube voltage, bow-tie filter, longitudinal beam width). Then, the conversion factors were obtained by applying exponential regression analysis between the dose values for a given phantom diameter and the phantom diameter combined with various scanning parameters. The conversion factors for each scanning method (helical, axial, or volume scanning) and CT dosimetry method (i.e., the CTDI method or the AAPM task group 111 method) were in agreement with those reported by AAPM task group 204, within a percentage error of 14.2 % for phantom diameters ≥11.2 cm. The results obtained in this study indicate that the conversion factors previously presented by AAPM task group 204 can be used to provide appropriate SSDE values for 320-detector-row volume CT examinations and the CT dosimetry metrics proposed by the AAPM task group 111. Purpose: The authors previously reported successful luminescence imaging of water during proton irradiation and its application to range estimation. However, since the feasibility of this approach for carbon-ion irradiation remained unclear, the authors conducted luminescence imaging during carbon-ion irradiation and estimated the ranges. Methods: The authors placed a pure-water phantom on the patient couch of a carbon-ion therapy system and measured the luminescence images with a high-sensitivity, cooled charge-coupled device camera during carbon-ion irradiation. The authors also carried out imaging of three types of phantoms (tap-water, an acrylic block, and a plastic scintillator) and compared their intensities and distributions with those of a phantom containing pure-water. Results: The luminescence images of pure-water phantoms during carbon-ion irradiation showed clear Bragg peaks, and the measured carbon-ion ranges from the images were almost the same as those obtained by simulation. The image of the tap-water phantom showed almost the same distribution as that of the pure-water phantom. The acrylic block phantom's luminescence image produced seven times higher luminescence and had a 13% shorter range than that of the water phantoms; the range with the acrylic phantom generally matched the calculated value. The plastic scintillator showed ~15 000 times higher light than that of water. Conclusions: Luminescence imaging during carbon-ion irradiation of water is not only possible but also a promising method for range estimation in carbon-ion therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The longitudinal dose profile in a computed tomography dose index (CTDI) phantom had been studied by many researchers. The cross-sectional dose profile in the CTDI phantom, however, has not been studied. It is also important to understand the cross-sectional dose profile in the CTDI phantom for dose estimation in X-ray CT. In this study, the cross-sectional dose profile in the CTDI phantom was calculated by use of a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation method. A helical or a 320-detector-row cone-beam X-ray CT scanner was simulated. The cross-sectional dose profile in the CTDI phantom from surface to surface through the center point was calculated by MC simulation. The shape of the calculation region was a cylinder of 1-mm-diameter. The length of the cylinder was 23, 100, or 300 mm to represent various CT ionization chamber lengths. Detailed analyses of the energy depositions demonstrated that the cross-sectional dose profile was different in measurement methods and phantom sizes. In this study, we also focused on the validation of the weighting factor used in weighted CTDI (CTDI). As it stands now, the weighting factor used in CTDI is (1/3, 2/3) for the (central, peripheral) axes. Our results showed that an equal weighting factor, which is (1/2, 1/2) for the (central, peripheral) axes, is more suitable to estimate the average cross-sectional dose when X-ray CT dose estimation is performed. Detective quantum efficiency (DQE) is widely used as a comprehensive metric for X-ray image evaluation in digital X-ray units. The incident photon fluence per air kerma ( $$ {\text{SNR}}_{\text{in}}^{2} $$) is necessary for calculating the DQE. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) reports the $$ {\text{SNR}}_{\text{in}}^{2} $$ under conditions of standard radiation quality, but this $$ {\text{SNR}}_{\text{in}}^{2} $$ might not be accurate as calculated from the X-ray spectra emitted by an actual X-ray tube. In this study, we evaluated the error range of the $$ {\text{SNR}}_{\text{in}}^{2} $$ presented by the IEC62220-1 report. We measured the X-ray spectra emitted by an X-ray tube under conditions of standard radiation quality of RQA5. The spectral photon fluence at each energy bin was multiplied by the photon energy and the mass energy absorption coefficient of air; then the air kerma spectrum was derived. The air kerma spectrum was integrated over the whole photon energy range to yield the total air kerma. The total photon number was then divided by the total air kerma. This value is the $$ {\text{SNR}}_{\text{in}}^{2} $$. These calculations were performed for various measurement parameters and X-ray units. The percent difference between the calculated value and the standard value of RQA5 was up to 2.9 %. The error range was not negligibly small. Therefore, it is better to use the new $$ {\text{SNR}}_{\text{in}}^{2} $$ of 30694 (1/(mm μGy)) than the current $$ {\text{SNR}}_{\text{in}}^{2} $$ of 30174 (1/(mm μGy)). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Organ and effective doses during paediatric chest radiographic examination were investigated for various tube voltages between 60 and 110 kV at a constant milliampere-second value and focus-to-film distance by using an in-phantom dose measuring system and a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation software (PCXMC), where the former was composed of 32 photodiode dosemeters embedded in various tissue and organ sites within a 6-y-old child anthropomorphic phantom. Lung doses obtained ranged from 0.010 to 0.066 mGy and effective doses from 0.004 to 0.025 mSv, where these doses varied by a factor of 6 with the change in the tube voltage. Effective doses obtained using the MC simulation software agreed with those obtained using the dose measuring system within 23 %, revealing the usefulness of PCXMC software for evaluating effective doses. The present study would provide helpful dose data for the selection of technical parameters in paediatric chest radiography in Japan. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Radiation doses in paediatric computed tomography (CT) were investigated for various types of recent CT scanners with newborn and 6-y-old phantoms in which silicon-photodiode dosemeters were implanted at various organ positions. In the head, chest and abdominal CT for the newborn phantom, doses for organs within the scan region were 21–40, 3–8 and 3–12 mGy, respectively. The corresponding doses for the child phantom were 20–37, 2–11 and 4–17 mGy, respectively. In the head, chest and abdominal CT, the effective doses were respectively 2.1–3.3, 2.0–6.0 and 2.2–10.0 mSv for the newborn, and 1.0–2.0, 1.2–6.6 and 2.9–11.8 mSv for the child. Radiation doses for the newborn were at the same levels as those for the child, excepting effective doses in head CT for the newborn, which were 1.8 times higher than those for the child. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate radiation dose to patients undergoing computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) for prospectively gated axial (PGA) technique and retrospectively gated helical (RGH) technique. Methods: Radiation doses were measured for a 320-detector row CT scanner (Toshiba Aquilion ONE) using small sized silicon-photodiode dosimeters, which were implanted at various tissue and organ positions within an anthropomorphic phantom for a standard Japanese adult male. Output signals from photodiode dosimeters were read out on a personal computer, from which organ and effective doses were computed according to guidelines published in the International Commission on Radiological Protection Publication 103. Results: Organs that received high doses were breast, followed by lung, esophagus, and liver. Breast doses obtained with PGA technique and a phase window width of 16% at a simulated heart rate of 60 beats per minute were 13 mGy compared to 53 mGy with RGH technique using electrocardiographically dependent dose modulation at the same phase window width as that in PGA technique. Effective doses obtained in this case were 4.7 and 20 mSv for the PGA and RGH techniques, respectively. Conversion factors of dose length product to the effective dose in PGA and RGH were 0.022 and 0.025 mSv mGy-1 cm-1 with a scan length of 140 mm. Conclusions: CTCA performed with PGA technique provided a substantial effective dose reduction, i.e., 70%-76%, compared to RGH technique using the dose modulation at the same phase windows as those in PGA technique. Though radiation doses in CTCA with RGH technique were the same level as, or some higher than, those in conventional coronary angiography (CCA), the use of PGA technique reduced organ and effective doses to levels less than CCA except for breast dose. Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate organ dose and the effective dose to patients undergoing tomosynthesis (TS) and C-arm cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) examinations and to compare the doses to those in multidetector CT (MDCT) scans. Methods: Patient doses were measured with small sized silicon-photodiode dosimeters, 48 in number, which were implanted at various tissue and organ positions within an anthropomorphic phantom. Output signals from photodiode dosimeters were read out on a personal computer, from which organ and effective doses were computed. The doses in head, chest, abdomen, and hip-joint TS, and in head and abdomen C-arm CBCT were evaluated for routine protocols on Shimadzu TS and C-arm CBCT systems, and the doses in MDCT with the same scan regions as in TS and CBCT were on Toshiba 64-detector-row CT scanners. Results: In TS examination of the head, chest, abdomen, and hip-joint, organ doses for organs within scan ranges were 1–4 mGy, and effective doses were 0.07 mSv for the head scan and around 1 mSv for other scans. In C-arm CBCT examinations of the head and abdomen, organ doses within scan range were 2–37 mGy, and effective doses were 1.2 mSv for the head scan and 4–5 mSv for abdominal scans. Effective doses in TS examinations were approximately a factor of 10 lower, while the doses in CBCT examinations were nearly the same level, compared to the doses in the corresponding MDCT examinations. Conclusions: TS examinations with low doses and excellent resolutions in coronal images compared to recent MDCT would widely be used in tomographic examinations of the chest, abdomen, pelvis, skeletal-joints, and knee instead of MDCT examinations with significantly high doses. Since patient dose in C-arm CBCT was nearly the same level as that in recent MDCT, the same consideration for high radiation dose would be required for the use of CBCT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CT examinations of the head and neck are the most commonly performed CT studies in children, raising concern about radiation dose and their risks to children. The purpose of this study was to clarify radiation dose levels for children of 6 years of age undergoing head and neck multidetector CT (MDCT) examinations. Radiation doses were measured with small-sized silicon-photodiode dosimeters that were implanted at various tissue and organ positions within a standard 6-year-old anthropomorphic phantom. Organ and effective doses of brain CT were evaluated for 19 protocols in nine hospitals on various (2–320 detector rows) MDCT scanners. The maximum value of mean organ dose in brain CT was 34.3 mGy for brain. Maximum values of mean doses for the radiosensitive lens and thyroid were 32.7 mGy for lens in brain CT and 17.2 mGy for thyroid in neck CT. seventy-fifth percentile of effective dose distribution in brain CT was approximately the same as the diagnostic reference level (DRL) in the 2003 UK survey. The purpose of this study was to clarify patient doses in the current otolaryngological multi-detector row computed tomography (MDCT) examinations. Patient doses were measured with an in-phantom dosimetry system which was composed of 48 photodiode dosemeters embedded within an anthropomorphic phantom. Organ and effective doses were evaluated according to the International Commission on Radiological Protection Publication 103. In neck CT, doses for salivary glands and for thyroid were high, 7.6-29.9 and 13.4-60.3 mGy, respectively. In sinus CT, brain and lens doses were high, 7.6-24.6 and 10.6-32.0 mGy, respectively, and in inner ear CT, lens dose was 8.0-35.3 mGy. Effective doses were 1.8-6.6 mSv in neck CT, 0.5-0.9 mSv in sinus CT and 0.3-0.6 mSv in inner ear CT. Objects Evaluation of medial temporal lobe (MTL) atrophy is usually performed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In Japan, however, the availability of computed tomography (CT) is much higher than that of MRI. The evaluation of MTL atrophy using CT may be useful when MRI is unavailable. This project developed a technique to automatically measure MTL atrophy using axial CT imaging and assessed the sensitivity of this method for diagnosing dementia of Alzheimer type (DAT). Materials and methods Linear measurements were taken for the width of the temporal horn, the width of the MTL, and the interuncal distance and the area of the temporal horn were measured. The algorithm developed employs the gray level threshold and the snake technique to process axial CT images. The algorithm was evaluated on 85 patients. Results The efficacy of this automated method was verified by a quantitative comparison of computerdetermined and manually obtained MTL measures, and based on its sensitivity and specificity in differentiating patients with DAT from control subjects. Conclusions This fully automated method of measuring MTL atrophy using CT is feasible and effective in DAT diagnosis, and simple to perform clinically. Organ and the effective doses of patients undergoing clinical X ray examinations of chest and abdomen were evaluated with an anthropomorphic phantom and a new dosimetry system. The system was comprised of 34 pin photodiode dosemeters placed in/on particular tissues or organs of the anthropomorphic phantom, where the tissues and organs are defined by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) to estimate the effective doses. Dosemeter signals were acquired on a personal computer directly, and converted into absorbed doses, from which the organ and the effective doses were evaluated on the computer. Our study showed that organ doses ranged from <0.01 to 0.72 mGy in routine X-ray radiography of chest and of abdomen and from 0.07 to 55.91 mGy in routine computed tomography (CT) examinations with current multi-slice CT scanners. Healthy aging is associated with structural and functional changes in the brain even in individuals who are free of neurodegenerative diseases. Using resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from a carefully selected cohort of participants, we examined cross sectional changes in the functional organization of several large-scale brain networks over the adult lifespan and its potential association with general cognitive performance. Converging results from multiple analyses at the voxel, node, and network levels showed widespread reorganization of functional brain networks with increasing age. Specifically, the primary processing (visual and sensorimotor) and visuospatial (dorsal attention) networks showed diminished network integrity, while the so-called core neurocognitive (executive control, salience, and default mode) and basal ganglia networks exhibited relatively preserved between-network connections. The visuospatial and precuneus networks also showed significantly more widespread increased connectivity with other networks. Graph analysis suggested that this reorganization progressed towards a more integrated network topology. General cognitive performance, assessed by Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-Revised total score, was positively correlated with between-network connectivity among the core neurocognitive and basal ganglia networks and the integrity of the primary processing and visuospatial networks. Mediation analyses further indicated that the observed association between aging and relative decline in cognitive performance could be mediated by changes in relevant functional connectivity measures. Overall, these findings provided further evidence supporting widespread age-related brain network reorganization and its potential association with general cognitive performance during healthy aging.
