Dynamic task scheduling problem in cloud manufacturing (CMfg) is always challenging because of changing manufacturing requirements and services. To make instant decisions for task requirements, deep reinforcement learning-based (DRL-based) methods have been broadly applied to learn the scheduling policies of service providers. However, the current DRL-based scheduling methods struggle to fine-tune a pre-trained policy effectively. The resulting training from scratch takes more time and may easily overfit the environment. Additionally, most DRL-based methods with uneven action distribution and inefficient output masks largely reduce the training efficiency, thus degrading the solution quality. To this end, this paper proposes an improved DRL-based approach for dynamic task scheduling in CMfg. First, the paper uncovers the causes behind the inadequate fine-tuning ability and low training efficiency observed in existing DRL-based scheduling methods. Subsequently, a novel approach is proposed to address these issues by updating the scheduling policy while considering the distribution distance between the pre-training dataset and the in-training policy. Uncertainty weights are introduced to the loss function, and the output mask is extended to the updating procedures. Numerical experiments on thirty actual scheduling instances validate that the solution quality and generalization of the proposed approach surpass other DRL-based methods at most by 32.8% and 28.6%, respectively. Simultaneous allocation of service times and buffer capacities in manufacturing systems in a random environment is a NP-hard combinatorial optimisation problem. This paper presents a sophisticated simulation-based optimisation approach for the design of unreliable production lines to maximise the production rate. The proposed method allows for a global search using a Genetic Algorithm (GA), which is coupled with Finite Perturbation Analysis (FPA) as a local search technique. Traditional techniques based on perturbation analysis optimise decision variables of the same nature (e.g. service time only, buffer capacity only), whereas the proposed technique simultaneously provides an allocation of service times and buffer capacities. One of the main focuses of this paper is the investigation of the persistence or absence of the buffer and service rate allocation patterns which are among the most essential insights that come from designing production lines. The results show the superiority of the combined GA-FPA approach regarding GA and FPA in terms of solution quality and convergence behaviour. Moreover, considering instances ranging from 3 to 100 machines, our numerical experiments are in line with the literature for small instances (as similar allocation patterns are identified in our work), but important differences are highlighted for medium/large instances. This paper introduces the Cyclic Production Routing Problem (CPRP). The CPRP is an extension of the well-known NP-hard Production Routing Problem (PRP), which is a hard-to-solve combinatorial optimisation problem with numerous practical applications in the field of freight transportation, logistics and supply chain management. Under the PRP setting, a manufacturer is responsible for determining production decisions, as well as the timing and quantity of replenishment services offered to a set of geographically dispersed customers over a multi-period time horizon. The problem calls for jointly optimising the production, inventory, distribution and routing decisions. In this paper, the basic PRP model is modified to generate repeatable cyclic production and delivery schedules. A two-commodity flow formulation is proposed along with valid inequalities. Extensive comparisons between the basic PRP and the proposed cyclic variant on well-known benchmark instances are provided. The new variant is significantly harder to solve, especially when the vehicle fleet is limited. From a managerial perspective, the generation of cyclic production-routing schedules significantly increases all costs, whereas the number of vehicle routes required to implement a cyclic schedule is higher. Cooperative multi-agent systems make it possible to employ miniature robots in order to perform different experiments for data collection in wide open areas to physical interactions with test subjects in confined environments such as a hive. This paper proposes a new multi-agent path-planning approach to determine a set of trajectories where the agents do not collide with each other or any obstacle. The proposed algorithm leverages a risk-aware probabilistic roadmap algorithm to generate a map, employs node classification to delineate exploration regions, and incorporates a customized genetic framework to address the combinatorial optimization, with the ultimate goal of computing safe trajectories for the team. Furthermore, the proposed planning algorithm makes the agents explore all subdomains in the workspace together as a formation to allow the team to perform different tasks or collect multiple datasets for reliable localization or hazard detection. The objective function for minimization includes two major parts, the traveling distance of all the agents in the entire mission and the probability of collisions between the agents or agents with obstacles. A sampling method is used to determine the objective function considering the agents' dynamic behavior influenced by environmental disturbances and uncertainties. The algorithm's performance is evaluated for different group sizes by using a simulation environment, and two different benchmark scenarios are introduced to compare the exploration behavior. As potent approaches for addressing computationally expensive optimization problems, surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithms (SAEAs) have garnered increasing attention. Prevailing endeavors in evolutionary computation predominantly concentrate on expensive continuous optimization problems, with a notable scarcity of investigations directed toward expensive combinatorial optimization problems (ECOPs). Nevertheless, numerous ECOPs persist in practical applications. The widespread prevalence of such problems starkly contrasts the limited development of relevant research. Motivated by this disparity, this paper conducts a comprehensive survey on SAEAs tailored to address ECOPs. This survey comprises two primary segments. The first segment synthesizes prevalent global, local, hybrid, and learning search strategies, elucidating their respective strengths and weaknesses. Subsequently, the second segment furnishes an overview of surrogate-based evaluation technologies, delving into three pivotal facets: model selection, construction, and management. The problem of finding optimal block designs can be formulated as a combinatorial optimization, but its resolution is still a formidable challenge. This paper presents a general and user-friendly algorithm, namely Modified Particle Swarm Optimization (MPSO), to construct optimal or near-optimal block designs. It can be used for several classes of block designs such as binary, non-binary and test-control block designs with correlated or uncorrelated observations. In order to evaluate the algorithm, we compare our results with the optimal designs presented in some published papers. The split delivery vehicle routing problem (SDVRP) is a classic combinatorial optimization problem, which is usually solved using a heuristic algorithm. The ant colony optimization algorithm is an excellent heuristic algorithm that has been successfully applied to solve various practical problems, and it has achieved good results. However, in the existing ant colony optimization algorithms, there are issues with weak targeting of different customer selection strategies, difficulty in balancing convergence speed and global search ability, and a predisposition to become trapped in local optima. To solve these problems, this paper proposes an improved ant colony algorithm (IACA). First, in terms of customer point selection, the initial customer and noninitial customer selection strategies are proposed for different customers, and the adaptive selection threshold is designed. Second, in terms of pheromone processing, an initial pheromone distribution method based on a greedy strategy, a pheromone backtracking mechanism, and an adaptive pheromone volatile factor are proposed. Finally, based on the 2-opt local search method, vehicle path self-search and intervehicle path search are proposed to further improve the quality of the solution. This paper tests the performance of the IACA on datasets of different scales. The experimental results show that compared with the clustering algorithm, artificial bee colony algorithm, particle swarm optimization algorithm, traditional ant colony algorithm, and other algorithms, the IACA can achieve more competitive results. Specifically, compared to the path length calculated by other algorithms, the path length calculated by IACA decreased by an average of 1.58%, 4.28%, and 3.64% in small, medium, and large-scale tests, respectively. Job shop scheduling problem (JSP) is a widely studied NP-complete combinatorial optimisation problem. Neighbourhood structures play a critical role in solving JSP. At present, there are three state-of-the-art neighbourhood structures, i.e. N5, N6, and N7. Improving the upper bounds of some famous benchmarks is inseparable from the role of these neighbourhood structures. However, these existing neighbourhood structures only consider the movement of critical operations within a critical block. According to our experiments, it is also possible to improve the makespan of a scheduling scheme by moving a critical operation outside its critical block. According to the above finding, this paper proposes a new N8 neighbourhood structure considering the movement of critical operations within a critical block and the movement of critical operations outside the critical block. Besides, a neighbourhood clipping method is designed to avoid invalid movement, discarding non-improving moves. Tabu search (TS) is a commonly used algorithm framework combined with neighbourhood structures. This paper uses this framework to compare the N8 neighbourhood structure with N5, N6, and N7 neighbourhood structures on four famous benchmarks. Bin packing problem (BPP) is one of the fastest-growing research issues within the field of combinatorial optimization. Over the last years, several studies carried out various BPP variants, mathematical models, and proposed methods to the BPPs. The classical BPP consists of packing a set of rectangular items in a minimum number of rectangular bins while respecting some constraints.Throughout the years, an improved typology was introduced by Wäscher et al. (2007), providing an excellent instrument for the organization and categorization criteria that defined the problem categories different from those of Dyckhoff (1990). Several early literature reviews have been conducted on various aspects of related packing problem variants.The contribution of this paper is to provide a comprehensive and refined taxonomy intended for BPPs. In addition to that, it is an up-to-date review based on a chronological taxonomy of the literature and depicts further research horizons.This systematic review allowed us to identify other characteristics and constraints, based on Wäscher's original ideas, mainly distinguished according to real cases studies. The detailed analysis provides a valuable framework for understanding the research gaps for future studies that should be acknowledged while proposing and solving new extensions. In this paper, we study the minimum k-partition problem of submodular functions, i.e., given a finite set V and a submodular function f : 2 V → R , computing a k-partition { V 1 , ... , V k } of V with minimum ∑ i = 1 k f (V i) . The problem is a natural generalization of the minimum k-cut problem in graphs and hypergraphs. It is known that the problem is NP-hard for general k, and solvable in polynomial time for fixed k ≤ 3 . Data mining has achieved great success in air traffic management as a technology for learning knowledge from historical data that benefits people. However, data mining can rarely be embedded into the trajectory optimization process since regular optimization algorithms cannot utilize the functional and implicit knowledge extracted from historical data in a general paradigm. To tackle this issue, this research proposes a novel data mining-based trajectory generation method that is compatible with existing optimization algorithms. Firstly, the proposed method generates trajectories by combining various maneuvers learned from operation data instead of reconstructing trajectories with generative models. In such a manner, data mining-based trajectory optimization can be achieved by solving a combinatorial optimization problem. Secondly, the proposed method introduces a majorization–minimization-based adversarial training paradigm to train the generation model with more general loss functions, including non-differentiable flight performance constraints. A case study on Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport was conducted to validate the proposed method. The bipartite polarization problem is an optimization problem where the goal is to find the highest polarized bipartition on a weighted and labeled graph that represents a debate developed through some social network, where nodes represent user's opinions and edges agreement or disagreement between users. This problem can be seen as a generalization of the maxcut problem, and in previous work, approximate solutions and exact solutions have been obtained for real instances obtained from Reddit discussions, showing that such real instances seem to be very easy to solve. In this paper, we further investigate the complexity of this problem by introducing an instance generation model where a single parameter controls the polarization of the instances in such a way that this correlates with the average complexity to solve those instances. The average complexity results we obtain are consistent with our hypothesis: the higher the polarization of the instance, the easier is to find the corresponding polarized bipartition. In view of the experimental results, it is computationally feasible to implement transparent mechanisms to monitor polarization on online discussions and to inform about solutions for creating healthier social media environments. The gas-gathering pipeline network is a critical infrastructure for collecting and conveying natural gas from the extraction site to the processing facility. This paper introduces a design optimization model for a star–tree gas-gathering pipeline network within a discrete space, aimed at determining the optimal configuration of this infrastructure. The objective is to reduce the investment required to build the network. Key decision variables include the locations of stations, the plant location, the connections between wells and stations, and the interconnections between stations. Several equality and inequality constraints are formulated, primarily addressing the affiliation between wells and stations, the transmission radius, and the capacity of the stations. The design of a star–tree pipeline network represents a complex, non-deterministic polynomial (NP) hard combinatorial optimization problem. To tackle this challenge, a hierarchical optimization framework coupled with an improved genetic algorithm (IGA) is proposed. The efficacy of the genetic algorithm is validated through testing and comparison with other traditional algorithms. Subsequently, the optimization model and solution methodology are applied to the layout design of a pipeline network. The findings reveal that the optimized network configuration reduces investment costs by 16% compared to the original design. Furthermore, when comparing the optimal layout under a star–star topology, it is observed that the investment needed for the star–star topology is 4% higher than that needed for the star–tree topology. The quantum alternating operator ansatz (QAOA) and its predecessor, the quantum approximate optimization algorithm, are one of the most widely used quantum algorithms for solving combinatorial optimization problems. However, as there is yet no rigorous proof of convergence for the QAOA, we provide one in this paper. The proof involves retracing the connection between the quantum adiabatic algorithm and the QAOA, and naturally suggests a refined definition of the 'phase separator' and 'mixer' keywords. A recent study on the classical capacitated vehicle routing problem (CVRP) introduced an adaptive version of the widely used iterated local search paradigm, hybridized with a path-relinking (PR) strategy. The solution method, called adaptive iterated local search (AILS)-PR, outperformed existing meta-heuristics for the CVRP on benchmark instances. However, tests on large-scale instances suggest that PR is too slow, making AILS-PR less advantageous in this case. To overcome this challenge, this paper presents an AILS combined with mechanisms to handle large CVRP instances, called AILS-II. The computational cost of this implementation is reduced, whereas the algorithm also searches the solution space more efficiently. AILS-II is very competitive on smaller instances, outperforming the other methods from the literature with respect to the average gap to the best-known solutions. The minimum connected dominating set problem is widely studied due to its applicability to mobile ad-hoc networks and sensor grids. Its variant the minimum 2-connected dominating set (M-2CDS) problem has become increasingly important because its critical role in designing fault-tolerant network. This paper presents a connected dominating degree-based local search (CDD-LS) tailored for solving the M-2CDS. The proposed algorithm implements an improved swap-based neighborhood structure as well as the corresponding fast neighborhood evaluation method using connected dominating degree data structure. The diversification techniques including tabu strategy and perturbaistion help the search jump out of the local optima improving the efficiency. This study investigates the performance of the CDD-LS algorithm on 38 publicly available benchmark datasets. The results demonstrate that the CDD-LS algorithm significantly improves the best runtime in 19 instances, while providing the equivalent performance in 8 instances. Furthermore, the CDD-LS is tested on 18 newly generated instances to check its capability on large-scale scenarios. This paper aims to solve the multi-objective operating planning problem in the radioactive environment. First, a more complicated radiation dose model is constructed, considering difficulty levels at each operating point. Based on this model, the multi-objective operating planning problem is converted to a variant traveling salesman problem (VTSP). Second, with respect to this issue, a novel combinatorial algorithm framework, namely hyper-parameter adaptive genetic algorithm (HPAGA), integrating bio-inspired optimization with reinforcement learning, is proposed, which allows for adaptive adjustment of the hyperparameters of GA so as to obtain optimal solutions efficiently. Third, comparative studies demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed HPAGA against classical evolutionary algorithms for various TSP instances. Coherent Ising Machine (CIM) is a network of optical parametric oscillators that solve combinatorial optimization problems by finding the ground state of an Ising Hamiltonian. In CIMs, a problem arises when attempting to realize the Zeeman term because of the mismatch in size between interaction and Zeeman terms due to the variable amplitude of the optical parametric oscillator pulses corresponding to spins. There have been three approaches proposed so far to address this problem for CIM, including the absolute mean amplitude method, the auxiliary spin method, and the chaotic amplitude control (CAC) method. This paper focuses on the efficient implementation of Zeeman terms within the mean-field CIM model, which is a physics-inspired heuristic solver without quantum noise. With the mean-field model, computation is easier than with more physically accurate models, which makes it suitable for implementation in field programmable gate arrays and large-scale simulations. First, we examined the performance of the mean-field CIM model for realizing the Zeeman term with the CAC method, as well as their performance when compared to a more physically accurate model. Next, we compared the CAC method to other Zeeman term realization techniques on the mean-field model and a more physically accurate model. The flexible job-shop scheduling problem (FJSP) with parallel batch processing machine (PBM) is one of those long-standing issues that needs cutting-edge approaches. It is a recent extension of standard flexible job shop scheduling problems. Despite their wide application and prevalence in practical production, it seems that current research on these types of combinatorial optimization problems remains limited and uninvestigated. More specifically, existing research mainly concentrates on the flow shop scenarios in parallel batch machines for job shop scheduling but few literature emphasis on the flexible job shop integration in these contexts. To directly address the above mentioned problems, this paper establishes an optimization model considering parallel batch processing machines, aiming to minimize the maximum completion time in operating and production environments. The proposed solution merges variable neighborhood search with multi-population genetic algorithms, conducting a neighborhood search on the elite population to reduce the likelihood of falling into local optima. Subsequently, its applicability was evaluated in computational experiments using real production scenarios from a partnering enterprise and extended datasets. The findings from the analyses indicate that the enhanced algorithm can decrease the objective value by as much as 15% compared to other standard algorithms. Importantly, the proposed approach effectively resolves flexible job shop scheduling problems involving parallel batch processing machines. Purpose: A fleet of mobile robots has been effectively used in various application domains such as industrial plant inspection. This paper proposes a solution to the combined problem of task allocation and motion planning problem for a fleet of mobile robots which are requested to operate in an intelligent industry. More specifically, the robots are requested to serve a set of inspection points within given service time windows. In comparison with the conventional time windows, our problem considers fuzzy time windows to express the decision maker's satisfaction for visiting an inspection point. Design/methodology/approach: The paper develops a unified approach to the combined problem of task allocation and motion planning for a fleet of mobile robots with three objectives: (a) minimizing the total travel cost considering all robots and tasks, (b) balancing fairly the workloads among robots and (c) maximizing the satisfaction grade of the decision maker for receiving the services. The optimization problem is solved by using a novel combination of a Genetic Algorithm with pareto solutions and fuzzy set theory. Findings: The computational results illustrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed approach. The experimental analysis leverages the potential for using fuzzy time windows to reflect real situations and respond to demanding situations. Originality/value: This paper provides trade-off solutions to a realistic combinatorial multi-objective optimization problem considering concurrently the motion and path planning problem for a fleet of mobile robots with fuzzy time windows. When a system of one-sided max-plus linear equations is inconsistent, the approximate solutions within an admissible error bound may be desired instead, particularly with some sparsity property. It is demonstrated in this paper that obtaining the sparsest approximate solution within a given L8 error bound may be transformed in polynomial time into the set covering problem, which is known to be NP-hard. Besides, the problem of obtaining the sparsest approximate solution within a given L1 error bound may be reformulated as a polynomial-sized mixed integer linear programming problem, which may be regarded as a special scenario of the facility location-allocation problem. By this reformulation approach, this paper reveals some interesting connections between the sparsest approximate solution problems in max-plus algebra and some well known problems in discrete and combinatorial optimization. The problem of finding a maximum size matching in a graph (known as the maximum matching problem) is one of the most classical problems in computer science. Despite a significant body of work dedicated to the study of this problem in the data stream model, the state-of-the-art single-pass semi-streaming algorithm for it is still a simple greedy algorithm that computes a maximal matching, and this way obtains 1 / 2 -approximation. Some previous works described two/three-pass algorithms that improve over this approximation ratio by using their second and third passes to improve the above mentioned maximal matching. One contribution of this paper continues this line of work by presenting new three-pass semi-streaming algorithms that work along these lines and obtain improved approximation ratios of 0.6111 and 0.5694 for triangle-free and general graphs, respectively. Additionally, this technique is unlikely to get us closer to single-pass semi-streaming algorithms obtaining a better than 1 / 2 -approximation. Therefore, it is interesting to come up with algorithms that do something else with their first pass (we term such algorithms non-maximal-matching-first algorithms). No such algorithms were previously known, and the main contribution of this paper is describing such algorithms that obtain approximation ratios of 0.5384 and 0.5555 in two and three passes, respectively, for general graphs. The study presents theHalfMax InsertionHeuristic (HMIH) as a novel approach to solving the Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP). The goal is to outperform existing techniques such as the Farthest Insertion Heuristic (FIH) and Nearest Neighbour Heuristic (NNH). The paper discusses the limitations of current construction tour heuristics, focusing particularly on the significant margin of error in FIH. It then proposes HMIH as an alternative that minimizes the increase in tour distance and includes more nodes. HMIH improves tour quality by starting with an initial tour consisting of a 'minimum' polygon and iteratively adding nodes using our novel Half Max routine. The paper thoroughly examines and compares HMIH with FIH and NNH via rigorous testing on standard TSP benchmarks. The results indicate that HMIH consistently delivers superior performance, particularly with respect to tour cost and computational efficiency. HMIH's tours were sometimes 16% shorter than those generated by FIH and NNH, showcasing its potential and value as a novel benchmark for TSP solutions. The study used statistical methods, including Friedman's Non-parametric Test, to validate the performance of HMIH over FIH and NNH. This guarantees that the identified advantages are statistically significant and consistent in various situations. This comprehensive analysis emphasizes the reliability and efficiency of the heuristic, making a compelling case for its use in solving TSP issues. The research shows that, in general, HMIH fared better than FIH in all cases studied, except for a few instances (pr439, eil51, and eil101) where FIH either performed equally or slightly better than HMIH. HMIH's efficiency is shown by its improvements in error percentage (d) and goodness values (g) compared to FIH and NNH. In the att48 instance, HMIH had an error rate of 6.3%, whereas FIH had 14.6% and NNH had 20.9%, indicating that HMIH was closer to the optimal solution. HMIH consistently showed superior performance across many benchmarks, with lower percentage error and higher goodness values, suggesting a closer match to the optimal tour costs. This paper is concerned with the scheduling problem in a new-type seru production system by consideration of DeJong's learning effect to minimise the total weighted completion time, so as to achieve efficiency, flexibility, and fast responsiveness to cope with the current volatile market. A combinatorial optimisation model is constructed and then reformulated to a binary quadratic assignment program. Accordingly, after presenting the necessary and sufficient condition for the locally optimal solution, a tabu search with strategic oscillation based on 3-opt as a diversification strategy is designed as the solution approach. A set of test problems are generated, and computational experiments with large-scale cases are made finally. The results indicate that the proposed heuristic algorithm is promising in solving seru scheduling problems and has a good performance in term of solution quality, efficiency, and scalability. We propose a heuristic method of using network centralities for constructing small-weight Steiner trees in this paper. The Steiner tree problem in graphs is one of the practical NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems. Given a graph and a set of vertices called terminals in the graph, the objective of the Steiner tree problem in graphs is to find a minimum weight Steiner tree that is a tree containing all the terminals. Conventional construction methods make a Steiner tree based on the shortest paths between terminals. If these shortest paths are overlapped as much as possible, we can obtain a small-weight Steiner tree. Therefore, we proposed to use network centralities to distinguish which edges should be included to make a small-weight Steiner tree. Combinatorial optimization (CO) on graphs is a classic topic that has been extensively studied across many scientific and industrial fields. Recently, solving CO problems on graphs through learning methods has attracted great attention. Advanced deep learning methods, e.g., graph neural networks (GNNs), have been used to effectively assist the process of solving COs. However, current frameworks based on GNNs are mainly designed for certain CO problems, thereby failing to consider their transferable and generalizable abilities among different COs on graphs. Moreover, simply using original graphs to model COs only captures the direct correlations among objects, which does not consider the mathematical logicality and properties of COs. In this paper, we propose a unified pre-training and adaptation framework for COs on graphs with the help of the maximum satisfiability (Max-SAT) problem. We first use Max-SAT to bridge different COs on graphs since they can be converted to Max-SAT problems represented by standard formulas and clauses with logical information. Then we further design a pre-training and domain adaptation framework to extract the transferable and generalizable features so that different COs can benefit from them. In the pre-training stage, Max-SAT instances are generated to initialize the parameters of the model. In the fine-tuning stage, instances from CO and Max-SAT problems are used for adaptation so that the transferable ability can be further improved. Numerical experiments on several datasets show that features extracted by our framework exhibit superior transferability and Max-SAT can boost the ability to solve COs on graphs. Container transportation is pivotal in global supply chains, facilitating the exchange of goods between companies across different countries. Given the exceedingly high operational costs of transporting containers, optimizing itinerary schedules can yield significant benefits for logistics companies. In this paper, we delve into a real-world container transportation routing issue where trucks are scheduled to haul trailers, subsequently transporting containers amongst container depots, ports, and warehouses. Our research bridges the existing gap between academic literature and industrial practice by examining the versatile role of trailers. We specifically focus on factors like trailer capacity restrictions and the ability to detach. To encapsulate these intricacies, we introduce a mixed-integer linear programming model, incorporating new variables, invariants, and constraints pertinent to these requirements. We follow this with the proposition of an Approximate Adapted Large Neighborhood Search algorithm (A-ALNS) aimed at solving the model. Within this algorithm, six innovative operators and elimination strategies have been integrated to amplify the efficiency of solution searches and sidestep local optima. Moreover, we've established an adaptive scoring mechanism to expedite operator selection and deliver feasible solutions within constrained timeframes. Our empirical tests on 25 data sets underscore the efficacy of our algorithms; they serve between 90.9% to 100% of total requests across all instances. With the advancement of Internet technology and social network, a multitude of real-world issues can be modeled as combinatorial optimization problems on networks, attracting widespread attention. In the optimization process, agents often engage in strategic behavior driven by personal interests to maximize their utilities. This "selfish" behavior can, on one hand, affect other participants, while on the other hand, the strategies of all agents directly determine the achievement of societal objectives. Therefore, cooperation and competition coexist among participants, giving rise to combinatorial optimization games. This paper aims to delve into three challenging combinatorial optimization games on networks: public goods games, vertex cover games, and routing games. These three categories of games not only hold significant positions in the fields of combinatorial optimization and theoretical computer science, but also have extensive applications across multiple interdisciplinary areas including management science and engineering, economics, and more. In real-world applications, feature selection is crucial for enhancing the performance of data science and machine learning models. Typically, feature selection is a complex combinatorial optimization problem and a multi-objective optimization problem. Its primary goals are to reduce the dimensionality of the dataset and enhance the performance of machine learning algorithms. The selection of features in high-dimensional datasets is challenging due to the intricate relationships between features, which pose significant challenges to the performance and computational efficiency of algorithms. This paper introduces a Knowledge-Guided Competitive Co-Evolutionary Algorithm (KCCEA) for feature selection, especially for high-dimensional features. In the proposed algorithm, we make improvements to the foundational dominance-based multi-objective evolutionary algorithm in two aspects. First, the use of feature correlation as knowledge to guide evolution enhances the search speed and quality of traditional multi-objective evolutionary algorithm solutions. Second, a dynamically allocated competitive–cooperative evolutionary mechanism is proposed, integrating the improved knowledge-guided evolution with traditional evolutionary algorithms, further enhancing the search efficiency and diversity of solutions. Through rigorous empirical testing on various datasets, the KCCEA demonstrates superior performance compared to basic multi-objective evolutionary algorithms, providing effective solutions to multi-objective feature selection problems while enhancing the interpretability and effectiveness of prediction models. In recent years, swarm intelligence optimization algorithms have been proven to have significant effects in solving combinatorial optimization problems. Introducing the concept of evolutionary computing, which is currently a hot research topic, into swarm intelligence optimization algorithms to form novel swarm intelligence optimization algorithms has proposed a new research direction for better solving combinatorial optimization problems. The longhorn beetle whisker search algorithm is an emerging heuristic algorithm, which originates from the simulation of longhorn beetle foraging behavior. This algorithm simulates the touch strategy required by longhorn beetles during foraging, and achieves efficient search in complex problem spaces through bioheuristic methods. This article reviews the research progress on the search algorithm for longhorn beetles from 2017 to present. Firstly, the basic principle and model structure of the beetle whisker search algorithm were introduced, and its differences and connections with other heuristic algorithms were analyzed. Secondly, this paper summarizes the research achievements of scholars in recent years on the improvement of longhorn whisker search algorithms. Then, the application of the beetle whisker search algorithm in various fields was explored, including function optimization, engineering design, and path planning. As a classical combinatorial optimization problem, the traveling salesman problem (TSP) has been extensively investigated in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Operations Research. Due to being NP-complete, it is still rather challenging to solve both effectively and efficiently. Because of its high theoretical significance and wide practical applications, great effort has been undertaken to solve it from the point of view of intelligent search. In this paper, we propose a two-stage probe-based search optimization algorithm for solving both symmetric and asymmetric TSPs through the stages of route development and a self-escape mechanism. Specifically, in the first stage, a reasonable proportion threshold filter of potential basis probes or partial routes is set up at each step during the complete route development process. In this way, the poor basis probes with longer routes are filtered out automatically. Moreover, four local augmentation operators are further employed to improve these potential basis probes at each step. In the second stage, a self-escape mechanism or operation is further implemented on the obtained complete routes to prevent the probe-based search from being trapped in a locally optimal solution. The experimental results on a collection of benchmark TSP datasets demonstrate that our proposed algorithm is more effective than other state-of-the-art optimization algorithms. In fact, it achieves the best-known TSP benchmark solutions in many datasets, while, in certain cases, it even generates solutions that are better than the best-known TSP benchmark solutions. In this paper, we study the knapsack problem with conflict pair constraints. After a thorough literature survey on the topic, our study focuses on the special case of bipartite conflict graphs. For complete bipartite (multipartite) conflict graphs, the problem is shown to be NP-hard but solvable in pseudo-polynomial time, and it admits an FPTAS. Extensions of these results to more general classes of graphs are also presented. Further, a class of integer programming models for the general knapsack problem with conflict pair constraints is presented, which generalizes and unifies the existing formulations. The strength of the LP relaxations of these formulations is analyzed, and we discuss different ways to tighten them. Experimental comparisons of these models are also presented to assess their relative strengths. This analysis disclosed various strong and weak points of different formulations of the problem and their relationships to different types of problem data. Linear assignment problems hold a pivotal role in combinatorial optimization, offering a broad spectrum of applications within the field of data sciences. They consist of assigning "agents" to "tasks" in a way that leads to a minimum total cost associated with the assignment. The assignment is balanced when the number of agents equals the number of tasks, with a one-to-one correspondence between agents and tasks, and it is and unbalanced otherwise. Additional options and constraints may be imposed, such as allowing agents to perform multiple tasks or allowing tasks to be performed by multiple agents. In this paper, we propose a novel framework that can solve all these assignment problems employing methodologies derived from the field of statistical physics. We describe this formalism in detail and validate all its assertions. A major part of this framework is the definition of a concave effective free energy function that encapsulates the constraints of the assignment problem within a finite temperature context. We demonstrate that this free energy monotonically decreases as a function of a parameter β representing the inverse of temperature. As β increases, the free energy converges to the optimal assignment cost. Furthermore, we demonstrate that when β values are sufficiently large, the exact solution to the assignment problem can be derived by rounding off the elements of the computed assignment matrix to the nearest integer. Network disintegration is a fundamental issue in the field of complex networks, with its core in identifying critical nodes or sets and removing them to weaken network functionality. The research on this problem has significant strategic value and has increasingly attracted attention, including in controlling the spread of diseases and dismantling terrorist organizations. In this paper, we focus on the problem of network disintegration with discrete entity resources from the attack view, that is, optimizing resource allocation to maximize the effect of network disintegration. Specifically, we model the network disintegration problem with limited entity resources as a nonlinear optimization problem and prove its NP-hardness. Then, we design a method based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL), Net-Cracker, which transforms the two-stage entity resource and network node selection task into a single-stage object selection problem. Extensive experiments demonstrate that compared with the benchmark algorithm, Net-Cracker can improve the solution quality by about 8∼62%, while enabling a 30-to-160-fold speed up. Net-Cracker also exhibits strong generalization ability and can find better results in a near real-time manner even when the network scale is much larger than that in training data. The uncapacitated facility location problem (UFLP) is a well-known combinatorial optimization problem that finds practical applications in several fields, such as logistics and telecommunication networks. While the existing literature primarily focuses on the deterministic version of the problem, real-life scenarios often involve uncertainties like fluctuating customer demands or service costs. This paper presents a novel algorithm for addressing the UFLP under uncertainty. Our approach combines a tabu search metaheuristic with path-relinking to obtain near-optimal solutions in short computational times for the determinisitic version of the problem. The algorithm is further enhanced by integrating it with simulation techniques to solve the UFLP with random service costs. The introduction of 5G technologies has enabled the possibility of designing and building several new classes of networked information systems that were previously impossible to implement due to limitations on data throughput or the reliability of transmission channels. Among them, one of the most interesting and successful examples with a highly positive impact in terms of the quality of urban environments and societal and economical welfare is a system of semi-autonomous connected vehicles, where IoT devices, data centers, and fleets of smart vehicles equipped with communication and computational resources are combined into a heterogeneous and distributed infrastructure, unifying hardware, networks, and software. In order to efficiently provide various services (e.g., patrolling, pickup and delivery, monitoring), these systems typically rely on collecting and broadcasting large amounts of data (e.g., sensor data, GPS traces, or maps), which need to be properly collected and processed in a timely manner. As is well documented in the literature, one of the most effective ways to achieve this purpose, especially in a real-time context, is to adopt a graph model of the data (e.g., to model communication networks, roads, or interactions between vehicles) and to employ suitable graph algorithms to solve properly defined computational problems of interest (e.g., shortest paths or distributed consensus). While research in this context has been extensive from a theoretical perspective, works that have focused on the implementation, deployment, and evaluation of the practical performance of graph algorithms for real-world systems of autonomous vehicles have been much rarer. In this paper, we present a study of this kind. Specifically, we first describe the main features of a real-world information system employing semi-autonomous connected vehicles that is currently being tested in the city of L'Aquila (Italy). Then, we present an overview of the computational challenges arising in the considered application domain and provide a systematic survey of known algorithmic results for one of the most relevant classes of computational problems that have to be addressed in said domain, namely, pickup and delivery problems. Finally, we discuss implementation issues, adopted software tools, and the deployment and testing phases concerning one of the algorithmic components of the mentioned real-world system dedicated to handling a specific problem of the above class, namely, the pickup and delivery multi-vehicle problem with time windows. Most existing deep learning methods for graph matching tasks tend to focus on affinity learning in a feedforward fashion to assist the neural network solver. However, the potential benefits of a direct feedback from the neural network solver to the affinity learning are usually underestimated and overlooked. In this paper, we propose a bidirectional learning method to tackle the above issues. Our method leverages the output of a neural network solver to perform feature fusion on the input of affinity learning. Such direct feedback helps augment the input feature maps of the raw images according to the current solution. A feature fusion procedure is proposed to enhance the raw features with pseudo features that contain deviation information of the current solution from the ground-truth one. As a result, the bidrectional alternation enables the learning component to benefit from the feedback, while keeping the strengths of learning affinity models. Symmetry is an important principle and characteristic that is prevalent in nature and artificial environments. In the three-dimensional packing problem, leveraging the inherent symmetry of goods and the symmetry of the packing space can enhance packing efficiency and utilization.The three-dimensional packing problem is an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem in the field of modern logistics, with high computational complexity. This paper proposes an improved genetic algorithm by incorporating a fusion tabu search strategy to address this problem. The algorithm employs a three-dimensional loading mathematical model and utilizes a wall-building method under residual space constraints for stacking goods. Furthermore, adaptation of fitness variation strategy, chromosome adjustment, and tabu search algorithm are introduced to balance the algorithm's global and local search capabilities, as well as to enhance population diversity and convergence speed. Through testing on benchmark cases such as Bischoff and Ratcliff, the improved algorithm demonstrates an average increase of over 3% in packing space utilization compared to traditional genetic algorithms and other heuristic algorithms, validating its feasibility and effectiveness. The proposed improved genetic algorithm provides new insights for solving three-dimensional packing problems and optimizing logistics loading schedules, offering promising prospects for various applications. Hyper-heuristics have arisen as methods that increase the generality of existing solvers. They have proven helpful for dealing with complex problems, particularly those related to combinatorial optimization. Their recent growth in popularity has increased the daily amount of text in the related literature. This information is primarily unstructured, mainly text that traditional computer data systems cannot process. Traditional systematic literature review studies exhibit multiple limitations, including high time consumption, lack of replicability, and subjectivity of the results. For this reason, text mining has become essential for researchers in recent years. Therefore, efficient text mining techniques are needed to extract meaningful information, patterns, and relationships. This study adopts a literature review of 963 journal and conference papers on hyper-heuristic-related works. We first describe the essential text mining techniques, including text preprocessing, word clouds, clustering, and frequent association rule learning in hyper-heuristic publications. With that information, we implement visualization tools to understand the most frequent relations and topics in the hyper-heuristic domain. The main findings highlight the most dominant topics in the literature. We use text mining analysis to find widespread manifestations, representing the significance of the different areas of hyper-heuristics. Furthermore, we apply clustering to provide seven categories showing the associations between the topics related to hyper-heuristic literature. The vast amount of data available that we find opens up a new opportunity for researchers to analyze the status of hyper-heuristics and help create strategic plans regarding the scope of hyper-heuristics. This paper considers optimal pricing in a system with limited substitutable resources, such as certain goods or services. Prices for the different resources have to be set and then customers with heterogeneous preferences show up sequentially. Customers, of n types, select an item from the m available resources, depending on their valuations of the resources and the prices. The goal is to analyze this optimization problem, characterize a set of candidates to optimal solutions and provide methods for solving it. We prove that this problem is NP-hard to approximate within a factor O (n 1 - ε) for any fixed ε > 0 . Another important contribution is to prove that, the space of prices (which in principle is a continuous domain in R m ), can be reduced to a finite set of vectors of cardinality m m - 2 n m 2 m . For a deterministic version of the problem, where the customer types are known to the firm, we provide a mathematical program that chooses the best set of prices. We report extensive computational results showing the usefulness of our exact approach to solve medium size problems with up to 200 customers and different assortments of products and customer types. Graph matching is a commonly used technique in computer vision and pattern recognition. Recent data-driven approaches have improved the graph matching accuracy remarkably, whereas some traditional algorithm-based methods are more robust to feature noises, outlier nodes, and global transformation (e.g. rotation). In this paper, we propose a graph neural network (GNN) based approach to combine the advantage of data-driven and traditional methods. In the GNN framework, we transform traditional graph matching solvers as single-channel GNNs on the association graph and extend the single-channel architecture to the multi-channel network. The proposed model can be seen as an ensemble method that fuses multiple algorithms at every iteration. Instead of averaging the estimates at the end of the ensemble, in our approach, the independent iterations of the ensembled algorithms exchange their information after each iteration via a 1 × 1 channel-wise convolution layer. Experiments show that our model improves the performance of traditional algorithms significantly. In addition, we propose a random sampling strategy to reduce the computational complexity and GPU memory usage, so that the model is applicable to matching graphs with thousands of nodes. We evaluate the performance of our method on three tasks: geometric graph matching, semantic feature matching, and few-shot 3D shape classification. Terrain visibility analysis is vital in geospatial research, employing computer geometry and graphics principles for computing and visualizing visibility between observation and target points. The observation point setup problem is crucial for tasks like sentry point selection and signal base station placement. This problem involves choosing the minimum viewpoints on terrain for optimal joint view coverage, presenting a combinatorial optimization challenge. As technology advances, data can be acquired with increasing precision, the number of viewpoints that can be extracted from the same area is gradually increasing as well, obtaining candidate viewpoints and determining optimal combinations become challenging. This paper proposes a novel method, Stepwise Maximum Viewshed (SMV), addressing observation point setup by stepwise filtering the maximum viewshed and can customize the size of the observation point combination. In complex mountainous terrain, the SMV algorithm demonstrates superior joint view coverage compared to Candidate Viewpoints Filtering (CVF) and Simulated Annealing (SA) algorithms. Approximation of the optimal tour length in a Euclidean traveling salesman problem (TSP) has been studied by many researchers. In a previous study, we used the standard deviation in random tour lengths to approximate the optimal tour length in both Euclidean and non‐Euclidean TSPs and we obtained good estimates. In this paper, we show that the strong power‐law relationship between the standard deviation in random feasible solution values and the optimal solution value also holds for other Euclidean and near‐Euclidean combinatorial optimization problems like the minimum spanning tree (MST) and maximum weight matching (MWM) problems. We then enhance the estimation ability of the model by considering a second predictor: the mean in random feasible solution values. Experimental results show that by using the mean, standard deviation, and randomization, we can accurately predict the optimal solution values for the TSP, MST, MWM, and the capacitated vehicle routing problem (VRP). Double Roman domination (DRD) is a combinatorial optimization problem posed on undirected graphs. It can be interpreted as allocating certain service providers (e.g., military formations, fire brigades or ambulances) to chosen locations within a certain area. Thereby the whole service (i.e., response to enemy attacks, fire or medical urgencies) should be established in a least expensive way, while still assuring a required "double Roman" level of availability and redundancy of providers. The standard version of DRD treated in the literature identifies the total expense of service with the total number of needed providers. In this paper a new "minimum-cost" version of DRD is considered, which is more general and more realistic than the standard version. It takes into account the fact that the actual expenses of providing service can differ from one location to another. Thus, formally speaking, each vertex in our graph is given a cost that is intepreted as the cost of keeping one service provider at the corresponding location. First, it is noted that the considered minimum-cost DRD problem is NP-hard, not only for general graphs but also for many special graph classes. Next, a dynamic programming algorithm is constructed, which shows that the problem can still be solved in linear time if the involved graph is a tree. Summary: The wireless network resource allocation is a NP‐hard combinatorial optimization problem. This paper proposes a new optimization method using the manta ray foraging optimization (MRFO) based on spiral modeling to solve the wireless network resource problem. In order to reduce the computational complexity and ensure the optimal performance of the allocation scheme, a MRFO algorithm based on spiral modeling and mutation strategy is proposed. In the first stage, spiral modeling is introduced to narrow the exploration area, while the mutation strategy of the genetic algorithm enhances the ability of the algorithm to jump out of the local optimal. In the second stage, a binary MRFO algorithm for using different transfer functions is proposed to solve the mixed integer programming problem. The experimental results show that IMRFO and BIMRFO have high comprehensive performance advantages, achieve better effects than the other optimization algorithms, which lead to faster convergence, faster accuracy, and lower complexity. We consider an optimization problem arising when a set of items must be selected and picked up from given locations in an automated storage and retrieval system by a crane of given capacity, minimizing the overall distance traveled. The problem has been classified as open in a recent taxonomy of optimal picking problems in automated warehouses.
