Origami, the art of paper folding, has emerged as a versatile technique for crafting intricate 3D structures from 2D sheets. Combined with the magnetic actuation, origami paper becomes the building blocks for cost‐effective, wirelessly controllable magnetic robots. Herein, a biodegradable magnetic paper with excellent formability and recyclability is developed, facilitating its convenient utilization and disposal. The programable magnetic paper, fabricated with specific magnetization and crease patterns, enables the transformation of 2D sheets into predetermined 3D structures. Leveraging the lightweight and pliable nature of paper‐based materials, exceptional control of origami robots with fast response is demonstrated, enabling a wide range of locomotion. Furthermore, the paper‐based approach enables the incorporation of electronic functionality into magnetic actuators. By introducing conductive nanoparticles into magnetic paper, an electrically conductive substance is created. Constructing electronic circuits and integrating electronic components onto the paper‐based printed circuit board platform enables the repairing of broken circuits inside complicated equipment and optical sensing of surrounding environments in conjunction with locomotive robots. The origami robots have a huge potential to be facilitated in diverse fields with various functions, demonstrating complex locomotion, and integrating chemical, optical, thermal, and mechanical sensors for monitoring environmental conditions in hard‐to‐reach locations. The examination of the lead–lag effect between different publication types, incorporating a temporal dimension, is very significant for assessing research. In this article, we introduce a novel framework to quantify the lead–lag effect between the research topics of conference papers and journal papers. We first identify research topics via the text‐embedding‐based topic modeling technique BERTopic, then extract the research topics of each time slice, construct and visualize the similarity matrix of topics to reveal the time‐lag direction and finally quantify the lead–lag effect by four proposed indicators, as well as by average influence topic similarity comparison maps. We conduct a detailed analysis of 19,166 bibliographic data for top conference papers and journal papers from 2015 to 2019 in the data mining field, calculate the similarity of topics obtained by BERTopic between each time slice divided by quarters. The results show that journal paper topics lag behind conference paper topics in the data mining field. The most significant lead–lag effect is 2.5 years, with approximately 33.45% of topics affected by this lag. The methodology presented here holds potential for broader application in the analysis of lead–lag effects across diverse research areas, offering valuable insights into the state of research development and informing policy decisions. The worldwide recycling rate for paper is about 60% and there are ongoing efforts to enhance the recycling rates to 80%. The low strength of recycled paper primarily due to the contaminants in it fetches lower value to the recycled paper in the market and also limits its recyclability. The ways to circumvent the problem of contamination of paper have been addressed by adding additives. However, the use of additives increases the cost of the final recycled paper. Oxidation has been explored as an alternative to enhance the tensile strength of paper in this work as it can be used in existing paper recycling facilities without any modifications. Pulp fibres were collected from an active paper recycling mill and subjected to oxidation at various oxidation levels from 0.25 up to 1.5 mmol/g. It was found that the tensile strength of the paper increased by up to 89% with an increase in oxidation level up to 1 mmol/g and later decreased with a further increase in the oxidation level up to 1.5 mmol/g. The brightness of the paper increased by up to 3% with an increase in oxidation level up to 0.85 mmol/g and then a decrease with further enhancement in the oxidation level. The oxidized samples were also studied with infrared spectroscopy, x‐ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and optical properties to study the behaviour of the resulting material. Nairobi's land digitisation programme presents continuous challenges to the Kenyan state's aspirations of reforming land administration. By drawing upon insights from archival sciences and digital geographies, this paper argues that digitisation of Kenya's land administration records presents us with an opportunity to pay attention to how information flows from paper to digital systems, and the nature of human condition that makes it possible. Based on research of land digitisation initiatives in Nairobi and its peripheral counties, this paper explores first, how digitisation initiates a large‐scale state exercise of sorting paper in the land records departments that constitutes the archival apparatus of the state; and second, how the archival labour of state officials in this process is at the same time significant, invisible and devalued. Through interviews of state officials in county and state departments, we argue that the digitisation process is far more complex and messier than the rhetoric of seamless transition to automated land administration in Kenya. Digitisation involves a slow embodied labour in sorting paper by state officials who have little power in shaping the design of the platform that they are expected to use. The devaluation of the archival labour of state officials who are not professionally trained in 'archival practice' and are seemingly voiceless in the production of national land information platforms leads to subversion and non‐cooperation with the platform itself. The paper concludes that an expansive lens of seeing digital platforms through the tools and technologies of archiving practices enables us to understand why platforms fail, why and how paper increases value within digital systems and how archival labour is central to the politics of digitisation and platformisation in the future. As is well known, Laser print paper is usually produced with high‐quality chemical wood pulp. The laser print waste paper fiber (LPWF) is a high‐quality secondary fiber, and the research and development of high‐value utilization technology for laser print waste paper has attracted much attention in the field of renewable resource recycling. In this study, LPWF was used to reinforce poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composites in the field, and the composites were modified with bioenzyme, cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM), and nano‐silicon carbide (Nano‐SiC) to enhance the interfacial compatibility of LPWF/PLA composites. The study systematically investigated the effects of various modification methods on the characteristics and degradability of composites made from laser print waste paper fiber reinforced PLA resin matrix. The results showed that the mechanical properties of the composites treated with CPAM and Nano‐SiC were significantly improved, with tensile strengths of 54.3 and 59.5 MPa, and flexural strengths of 85.1 and 91.5 MPa, respectively, and the water absorption of the composites was reduced after the modification treatment, while the thermal stability was improved. The degradation performance of the composites in various water environments indicated that the inclusion of LPWF accelerated the water degradation rate of the composites, with the maximum degradation rate of the composite reaching 1.26% in 30 days. The effect of fibre length and grammage on the electrophotographic digital printing process was investigated in this study. While integral optical density values on handsheets have shown no significant change, unprinted handsheets have shown an increasing change as short fibre content has increased. Because of structural changes in the paper surface, the measured results for print chroma, brightness, contrast, and delta gloss differed between paper groups. This research confirmed that these changes have nothing to do with grammage or fibre length content. Regardless of the fibre length ratios, significant increases in tone values of ink, were accompanied by a decrease in the grammage of the handsheets among the grammage groups provided. The specimen grammage affected the universal colour diagrams, but not the fibre length. The discrepancies in all of these printing outcomes were thought to be caused by the random distribution of fibres and the distances between them on the paper's surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Endoscopic ultrasound‐guided tissue acquisition (EUS‐TA) is used for pathological diagnosis and obtaining samples for molecular testing, facilitating the initiation of targeted therapies in patients with pancreatic cancer. However, samples obtained via EUS‐TA are often insufficient, requiring more efforts to improve sampling adequacy for molecular testing. Therefore, this study investigated the use of oil blotting paper for formalin fixation of samples obtained via EUS‐TA. Methods: This prospective study enrolled 42 patients who underwent EUS‐TA for pancreatic cancer between September 2020 and February 2022 at the Osaka International Cancer Institute. After a portion of each sample obtained via EUS‐TA was separated for routine histological evaluation, the residual samples were divided into filter paper and oil blotting paper groups for analysis. Accordingly, filter paper and oil blotting paper were used for the formalin fixation process. The total tissue, nuclear, and cytoplasm areas of each sample were quantitatively evaluated using virtual slides, and the specimen volume and histological diagnosis of each sample were evaluated by an expert pathologist. Results: All cases were cytologically diagnosed as adenocarcinoma. The area ratios of the total tissue, nuclear, and cytoplasmic portions were significantly larger in the oil blotting paper group than in the filter paper group. The frequency of cases with large amount of tumor cells was significantly higher in the oil blotting paper group (33.3%) than in the filter paper group (11.9%) (p = 0.035). Conclusions: Oil blotting paper can increase the sample volume obtained via EUS‐TA on glass slides and improve sampling adequacy for molecular testing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

3D tissue‐engineered models are poised to facilitate understanding of skeletal muscle pathophysiology and identify novel therapeutic agents to improve muscle health. Adopting these culture models within the broader biology community is a challenge as many models involve complex methodologies and significant investments of time and resources to optimize manufacturing protocols. To alleviate this barrier, a protocol with commercially available reagents is developed to cryopreserve myoblasts in a 96‐well compatible format that allows tissues to be transferred to users without expertise in 2D or 3D skeletal muscle cell culture. This report validates that myoblasts encapsulated in a hydrogel and cryopreserved in paper‐based scaffolds maintain cell viability, differentiation, and function via acetylcholine‐induced transient calcium responses. Furthermore, successful shipping of myoblasts cryopreserved in paper‐based scaffolds to intra‐provincial and international collaborators is demonstrated who successfully thaw, culture, and use the 3D muscle tissues. Finally, the application of this method is confirmed for studying muscle endogenous repair by seeding freshly isolated skeletal muscle stem cells to cryopreserved then differentiated and injured tissues, demonstrating expected responses to a known stimulator of muscle stem cell self‐renewal, p38α/β MAPKi. Solar energy facilities are rapidly expanding in their land‐use footprint worldwide, with significant implications for biodiversity. Although the impacts of conventional solar development are often negative for biodiversity, it is possible for some species to take advantage of the novel anthropogenic structures and microhabitats provided by solar facilities. We describe the frequent nesting of non‐native European paper wasps (Polistes dominula) at two solar facilities in the Central Valley of California (USA), conducting nest censuses to further investigate population density and nest siting behaviour. Active nests were found to occur at a density of 10–23 per hectare of solar facility, and paper wasps had a preference for nesting in sheltered metal torque tubes compared with the more exposed undersides of photovoltaic panels. Our study shows that P. dominula might benefit from the construction of solar energy facilities, which could have a variety of impacts on native species and surrounding agriculture that warrant further study. The European paper wasp therefore provides an example to illustrate the potential for a varied and relatively unpredictable set of ecological outcomes to follow land‐use change resulting from solar energy development. Co‐contamination of mycotoxins produced by fungi in foodstuffs and feeds causes a tremendous health risk to humans and animals. The simultaneous detection of multiple mycotoxins using a cost‐effective and point‐of‐care technology is key to ensuring food safety. In this study, a disposable biosensor with two individual sensing channels is prepared on an affordable cellulose paper substrate and used to simultaneously detect fumatoxin B1 (FB1) and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). The biosensor pattern is outlined by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and the hydrophobic interface of the sensing channels is created using octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS). Semiconducting single‐wall carbon nanotubes (s‐SWCNTs) are deposited onto the central zones to serve as the sensing elements and SWCNTs are deposited into the bilateral areas as wire. After functionalization of the s‐SWCNTs, anti‐FB1 and anti‐AFB1 are separately immobilized on the different sensing regions to capture the targeted mycotoxins. Under the optimal conditions, this developed s‐SWCNTs‐based biosensor array achieved a limit of detection (LOD) of 8.23 pg mL−1 for FB1 and 7.48 pg mL−1 for AFB1. As a demonstration, spiked corn samples are measured using this biosensor and recovery rates are not inferior to commercial enzyme‐linked immune sorbent assay (ELISA) kits. Phototransistors are used in plenty of diverse applications such as optical communication systems, light sensors, imaging devices, and biomedical instruments for detecting and amplifying light signals. Herein, an approach for the large‐scale production of low‐cost and flexible phototransistors by integrating the inks of PEDOT:PSS, and graphite with paper, which serves as an ionic conductor material to gate the PEDOT:PSS channel, is proposed. The fabrication of the devices is carried out by sequentially depositing the PEDOT:PSS channel and graphite electrodes onto paper using a benchtop XY plotter. To characterize device‐to‐device variability, 200 devices are fabricated and their electrical and optical properties are statistically analyzed. By performing a detailed characterization on the optical properties under varying wavelength, power, and bias conditions, it is found that devices exhibit good photoresponse across a wide spectrum range. Moreover, devices maintain their photoactive characteristics even when subjected to high mechanical tensile strain, indicating the suitability of these paper‐supported devices for flexible electronic applications. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a conventional packaging material. Its modification has attracted immense attention in the industry and academia. Here, office waste paper, white cardboard waste, and waste corrugated paper were first employed as raw materials for cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) extraction by acid hydrolysis. Thereafter, CNC/PET composite films with various CNC additions were prepared via a self‐assembly technique. The results revealed that the CNCs formed a self‐assembled film on the PET surface via the synergistic effect of the complex interactions among the CNCs as well as between the CNCs and PET. Moreover, the CNCs improved the barrier property of PET and decreased the oxygen and water vapor transmittances of CNC/PET by 30.7% and 21.7%, respectively. Additionally, the coating of the PET surface with 0.2 wt.% CNCs extracted from the waste paper decreased the surface wettability of PET, exhibiting application potentials in the hydrophobic modification of polymers. This study realized waste paper recycling and provided a basis for constructing self‐assembled functional films on PET surfaces. The findings and insights of this study could exhibit application potentials in the fields of waste recycling and packaging materials. With the implementation of the "plastic restriction order" and the demand for sustainable society development, biodegradable coatings derived from biomass materials have garnered significant interest. This study presents the synthesis of a double‐salt bio‐based waterborne polyurethane (PLA‐WPU) by utilizing poly(lactic acid) polyol (PLA) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as the main raw materials, along with 2,2‐dihydroxymethylpropionic acid (DMPA) and sodium ethylenediamine ethanesulfonate (A‐95) as a hydrophilic chain extender. Synergistic reinforcement of PLA‐WPU using hydrophobically modified cellulose nanocrystals (M‐CNC) and polycarbonate diimide (PDCDA). At an M‐CNC content of 3% relative to the effective mass of PLA‐WPU, the tensile strength reached 36.12 MPa. After 8 days a lipase PBS solution, the degradation rate reached 54%. Excellent waterproof performance was observed, exhibiting a contact angle of 143.5°. When applied as a surface coating on kraft paper, the Cobb 60 value decreased from 74.0 to 28.6 g/m2, while increasing the tensile strength by 451.3%. Importantly, the kraft paper maintained excellent waterproofing, mechanical strength, and high barrier properties even after repeated folding, high and low‐temperature conditions, and exposure to varying pH solutions. Direct air capture (DAC) is a sustainable technology to alleviate the greenhouse effect and a reliable pathway to acquire inexhaustible CO2 for the production of costly chemicals and energy products. Current DAC technologies with amine‐related sorbents rely on chemisorption, while they consume intensive energy for CO2 release and sorbent regeneration by heating. Developing new DAC processes with weak, reversible adsorption can substantially reduce the regeneration energies. Herein, the design of CO2 breathing paper (CBP) is demonstrated toward spontaneous CO2 extraction from ambient air and solar‐driven regeneration. The CBP is fabricated by coupling 2‐ethyl‐4‐methylimidazole to carbon nanotube paper on the basis of density functional theory calculations. At ambient conditions, CBP spontaneously captures atmospheric CO2 with a capacity of 0.14–1.75 mmol g–1 at 0–35 °C through non‐covalent electrostatic interaction. Upon exposure to sunlight, all adsorbed CO2 can be released and converted to concentrated gas for storage. Attractively, the efficiency of solar‐driven CO2 release is much higher than the traditional temperature‐swing method owing to the IR sensitivity of CO2. In recent years, paper‐based functional materials have received extensive attention in the field of energy storage due to their advantages of rich and adjustable porous network structure and good flexibility. As an important energy storage device, paper‐based supercapacitors have important application prospects in many fields and have also received extensive attention from researchers in recent years. At present, researchers have modified and regulated paper‐based materials by different means such as structural design and material composition to enhance their electrochemical storage capacity. The development of paper‐based supercapacitors provides an important direction for the development of green and sustainable energy. Therefore, it is of great significance to summarize the relevant work of paper‐based supercapacitors for their rapid development and application. In this review, the recent research progress of paper‐based supercapacitors based on cellulose was summarized in terms of various cellulose‐based composites, preparation skills, and electrochemical performance. Finally, some opinions on the problems in the development of this field and the future development trend were proposed. In the realm of food waste recycling, industrial suberoligneous by‐products like cork and peels, pose a challenge for value‐added conversion, primarily due to their intricate structures. This study introduces an innovative approach by utilizing recycled cork as a prime example of repurposing food waste to create a reusable and durable packaging paper. Notably, the manufacturing process of this cork‐based paper avoids the generation of waste liquids from lignin removal, effectively alleviating concerns related to liquid waste pollution. The resulting packaging paper demonstrates remarkable printability, readability, and erasability while offering reusability. Its performance can be fine‐tuned through pH value adjustments. Moreover, this packaging paper exhibits outstanding antioxidative properties and barrier properties, seamlessly integrating superb UV‐blocking proficiency and heightened visible transparency, rendering it highly appealing for sustainable food packaging applications. The urgent need for sustainable waste management strategies has led to the exploration of innovative approaches for the valorization of waste. In this study, a method is proposed for carbonizing waste biomass materials, particularly paper mill waste sludges (primary and biological) and knots, to produce porous carbonaceous supports. Through an initial hydrothermal carbonization followed by carbonization with nitrogen flow, porous carbon materials are successfully generated. The findings of this investigation validate the successful generation of effective carbonaceous supports utilizing waste biomass materials. These materials are then evaluated for their effectiveness as porous supports in the ionic liquid‐catalyzed cycloaddition reaction of CO2 to styrene oxide, achieving a remarkable conversion rate of up to 98% and an impressive selectivity exceeding 99%. Additionally, the results underscore the significant impact of the selected IL on the overall conversion process. Overall, this study presents a promising pathway for the valorization of paper mill waste sludge through the production of porous carbon materials with potential applications in catalysis and beyond. This article explores the conception and execution of paper currency schemes in Tokugawa Japan (1603–1868). Paper currency was widely used as a form of local money in early modern Japan, but has received close to no attention in Anglophone scholarship even amid a recent upsurge in interest in the global history of money. From the perspective of monetary history, Tokugawa paper currency presents an intriguing puzzle. Even as paper currencies repeatedly collapsed in value, they remained in common use as an essential component of the early modern monetary system. Using the case of Sendai domain, a large fiefdom in northeastern Japan, the article argues that the monetary practices and expectations of ordinary subjects transformed paper money, created through partnerships between the samurai ruling class and powerful merchant financiers, from a tool meant to serve the interests of state finances into a low‐denomination currency convenient for everyday transactions, resulting in the bills' surprising longevity as a form of small change. Drawing on approaches that centre the role of non‐state and marginal actors in the making of money, it sheds new light on the political economy of late Tokugawa Japan and offers new insights into the global history of money. Nanocellulose extraction from lignocellulosic materials is a highly chemical and energy‐intensive process as it requires the removal of lignin and hemicellulose. Writing paper is one of the processed materials that could be used as a raw material for the extraction of nanocellulose. In this work, cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were synthesized from paper waste using TEMPO‐oxidation followed by high‐shear microfluidization. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy confirmed the diameter of fibers in the nano‐range and a consistent zeta potential confirmed the stability of CNF suspension in water over a long time frame. Characterization of the CNFs using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated the presence of a carbonyl group due to the oxidation process. Thermogravimetric analysis and x‐ray diffraction revealed lower thermal stability and reduction in the crystallinity index of CNFs, as compared to pulp fibers. The obtained CNFs were used successfully as the sole binding agent in the preparation of fiberboards and also utilized as a reinforcing agent for polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) adhesive in the preparation of laminated veneer lumber (LVLs). The addition of CNFs in PVAc improved the glue shear strength indicating superior bonding characteristics and also increased the water resistance of the LVLs. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of dried blood spot (DBS) compared with conventional serum Aquaporin‐4‐IgG (AQP4‐IgG) testing. Methods: Prospective multicenter diagnostic study was conducted between April 2018 and October 2023 across medical centers in the United States, Uganda, and the Republic of Guinea. Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) patients and controls collected blood on filter paper cards along with concurrent serum samples. These samples underwent analysis using flow cytometric live‐cell‐based assays (CBA) and enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to determine AQP4 serostatus. The accuracy of AQP4‐IgG detection between DBS and serum (gold standard) was compared. Results: Among 150 participants (47 cases, 103 controls), there was a strong correlation between DBS and serum samples (Spearman's correlation coefficient of 0.82). The AUC was 0.97 (95% CI: 0.92–0.99). AQP4‐IgG detection through DBS showed 87.0% sensitivity (95% CI: 0.74–0.95) and 100% specificity (95% CI: 0.96–1.00) using CBA, and 65.2% sensitivity (95% CI: 0.43–0.84) and 95.2% specificity (95% CI: 0.76–0.99) using ELISA. Serum ELISA demonstrated 69.6% sensitivity (95% CI: 0.47–0.87) and 98.4% specificity (95% CI: 0.91–0.99). The stability of DBS in detecting AQP4‐IgG persisted over 24 months for most cases. Interpretation: The DBS represents a viable alternative for detecting AQP4‐IgG in resource‐limited settings to diagnose NMOSD, offering high sensitivity and specificity comparable to serum testing. Moisture is the main threat to the insulation of OIP bushings. Therefore, accurately estimating their moisture value is crucial to keep power systems running smoothly. However, it has been suggested that the ageing status of OIP bushings should be considered while assessing the moisture. Dielectric frequency‐domain spectroscopy (FDS) has been extensively employed for assessing insulation condition of OIP insulations due to its benefits. A new approach was proposed to assess the insulation condition of OIP bushings using FDS results. Various OIP samples with various moisture levels and degrees of polymerisation (DP) were selected. The extended Debye model (EDM) parameters related to each sample were calculated using their tanδ − f curve. A time constant database (TCD) was created using the obtained time constants of EDM, which includes the dominant time constant and time constant related to the R0 – C0 branch, and their corresponding insulation condition. Then, a method was introduced based on the created TCD to estimate the insulation condition of OIP bushings. This study attempts to detect papers originating from the Russia‐based paper mill 'International Publisher' LLC. A total of 1,063 offers to purchase co‐authorship on a fraudulent papers published from 2019 to mid‐2022 on the 123mi.ru website were analysed. This study identifies at least 451 papers that are potentially linked to the paper mill, including one preprint, a duplication paper and 16 republications of papers erroneously published in hijacked journals. Evidence of suspicious provenance from the paper mill is provided: matches in title, number of co‐authorship slots, year of publication, country of the journal, country of a co‐authors and similarities of abstracts. These problematic papers are co‐authored by scholars from at least 39 countries and are submitted to both predatory and reputable journals. This study also demonstrates collaboration anomalies in questionable papers and examines indicators of the Russia‐based paper mill. The value of co‐authorship slots offered by 'International Publisher' LLC from 2019 to 2021 is estimated at $6.5 million. Nano‐calcium carbonate (nano‐CaCO3) is a tiny inorganic filler created in the 1980s. It boasts a high specific surface area, excellent biocompatibility, and nontoxicity. As a result, it finds extensive applications in the rubber, plastic, and paper industries. This paper intends to give a general overview of the preparation process, surface modification, and application of nano‐CaCO3. In nature, wind can transport objects of diverse shapes and materials over long distances spanning meters or beyond. In contrast, most noncontact manipulation methods are effective only over centimeter‐scale distances and require the manipulated objects to have specific magnetic, electrical, or other material properties and shapes. Herein, a meter‐scale distance manipulation method is presented for controlling the motion of objects of diverse shapes and materials on a plane surface using a jet‐induced airflow field. The airflow field is varied by controlling the direction of a single air jet projected onto a surface based on the positions of objects to steer the objects to follow desired trajectories up to 2.7 m away. A wide variety of objects can be automatically manipulated, from regularly shaped polystyrene hemispheres and sticks to irregularly shaped cotton wads and face masks as well as deformable tissue papers and plastic bags. The method is also robust, effectively manipulating objects under challenging conditions, e.g., external airflow disturbances, surface obstacles, and air–water interface. Finally, three application cases are demonstrated: collecting diverse objects into a target receptacle, hooking and retrieving heavy objects with a tethered mobile agent, and closing an electrical circuit with an untethered soft agent. Wide‐bandgap perovskite solar cells (PSCs) play crucial roles in determining the overall efficiencies of all‐perovskite tandem solar cells (TSCs). Tailoring the grain growth process is a key route to improve the film quality and device performance. Herein, a facile passivator‐assisted close space annealing (PA‐CSA) strategy to simultaneously enlarge the crystal size and passivate the defects is demonstrated. Filter paper is used as the solvent permeable membrane to slow down the fast crystallization and enlarge the grain size. At the same time, a precisely selected volatile material (fluorizated‐phenethylammonium chloride) embedded in the filter paper is employed as the passivator to eliminate defects in wide‐Eg perovskite film during annealing. The PA‐CSA‐processed wide‐Eg PSCs obtain the champion efficiencies of 21.28% (1.68 eV) and 20.24% (1.73 eV), enabling high‐performance all‐perovskite TSCs with efficiencies reaching 27% in both four‐terminal and monolithic two‐terminal tandem configurations, respectively. The development of cost‐effective, highly efficient, and durable electrocatalysts has been a paramount pursuit for advancing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a simplified synthesis protocol was designed to achieve a self‐standing electrode, composed of activated carbon paper embedded with Ru single‐atom catalysts and Ru nanoclusters (ACP/RuSAC+C) via acid activation, immersion, and high‐temperature pyrolysis. Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations are employed to gain a more profound understanding of the impact of acid activation on carbon paper. Furthermore, the coexistence states of the Ru atoms are confirmed via aberration‐corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC‐STEM), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Experimental measurements and theoretical calculations reveal that introducing a Ru single‐atom site adjacent to the Ru nanoclusters induces a synergistic effect, tuning the electronic structure and thereby significantly enhancing their catalytic performance. Notably, the ACP/RuSAC+C exhibits a remarkable turnover frequency (TOF) of 18 s−1 and an exceptional mass activity (MA) of 2.2 A mg−1, surpassing the performance of conventional Pt electrodes. The self‐standing electrode, featuring harmoniously coexisting Ru states, stands out as a prospective choice for advancing HER catalysts, enhancing energy efficiency, productivity, and selectivity. The acidic soils of western Newfoundland require liming for successful production of most crops. Locally sourced paper mill waste wood ash (WA) and paper sludge (SL) have potential as cheaper alternatives to limestone (LIME). Two greenhouse experiments evaluated WA and SL as liming and soil conditioning amendments for annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) production. At 55 days after seeding, soil pH in WA (6.2 and 6.3) and wood ash and paper sludge (WASL) (6.0 and 6.3) were not different from that in LIME (6.0 and 6.5) for Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. However, pH in SL was 0.4 and 0.3 points lower than in LIME. Compared to LIME, WA, SL, and WASL produced 31%–52% and 57%–74% greater biomass yield in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. N uptake was greater in WA (60 and 129 kg N ha−1) and WASL (51 and 97 kg N ha−1) compared to LIME (40 and 85 kg N ha−1), in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. SL did not differ from LIME in Experiment 1, but reduced N uptake by 57% in Experiment 2. The results show significant potential of WA as an alternative amendment for liming and yield improvement of annual ryegrass grown in NL podzolic soils. However, SL has limited potential due to the risk of increasing N immobilization and residual soil mineral N when growing conditions are limiting. Combining SL with WA or biochar seemed to alleviate these risks. Overall, the adoption of these amendments for field production systems warrants serious consideration, following supplemental field studies to determine optimal application rates and timing. Vibrations during transportation often cause mechanical damage to fresh produce. Addressing or mitigating this damage requires efficient packaging solutions that maintain fresh produce integrity during transit, thereby preserving produce quality and market value. This study investigates the effects of various transportation profiles and packaging designs on apple bruising using simulated truck vibrations. Two apple varieties, Fuji and Jonagold, were packaged in corrugated paperboard boxes with paper pulp trays, plastic crates with paper pulp trays, corrugated paperboard boxes with volume packing and plastic crates with volume packing, all commercial apple packaging. The packaged apples were exposed to two random vibration profiles: leaf spring and air ride suspensions, both set at four different intensities ranging from 0.2 to 0.7 Grms for 1, 3 and 5 h. The findings revealed that both packaging type and vibration parameters significantly influenced apple bruising. Especially, plastic crates with paper pulp trays led to the most severe bruising, whereas corrugated paperboard boxes with volume packing afforded the most protection. Regardless of the packaging design, leaf spring suspension resulted in more apple bruising compared to air ride suspension. In this investigation, the fluorescent poly(N‐hydroxyethyl morpholine acrylate) (PHEMA) and poly(N‐hydroxypropyl morpholine acrylate) (PHPMA) are prepared and applied as fluorescent probes for the specific detection of Cu2+ ions. Far different from the non‐fluorescent monomer, PHEMA and PHPMA emit a strong fluorescence at 410 nm due to the intramolecular aggregation of morpholine structures along macromolecular chains in the polymerization, indicating polymerization‐induced emission (PIE). The fluorescent emission of PHPMA shows the dependence on external factors including solution concentration, excitation wavelength, solvent, and pH value. PHPMA specifically detects Cu2+ ions even in the presence of 16 common metal ions and 6 anions, with an LOD of 0.077 µM. In the fluorescent quenching, the O atom from ─C═O and N atom from morpholine moiety on the PHPMA chain participate in the complexation with Cu2+ ions with the ratio of the structural unit and Cu2+ ion of 2:1, leading to the dynamic quenching of PHPMA solution. As for the application, PIE‐active PHPMA is easily made into a portable semi‐quantitative filter paper with recyclability. In brief, the PIE‐active PHPMA synthesized in this study can be used as a promising material for the specific detection of Cu2+ ions in industry, agriculture, and medicine fields. In recent years, there has been an increased focus on studying light–battery interactions in the context of operando optical studies and integrated photoelectrochemical energy harvesting. However, there has been little insight into identifying suitable "light‐accepting" current collectors for this class of batteries. In this study, fluorine‐doped tin oxide, indium‐tin oxide, and silver nanowire‐graphene films are analyzed along with carbon paper, carbon nanotube paper, and stainless‐steel mesh as current collectors for optical batteries. They are categorized into two classes – transmissive and non‐transmissive, based on the orientation of the light–electrode interaction. Various methods to prepare the electrode are highlighted, including drop casting and the fabrication of free‐standing electrodes. The optical and electrical properties of these current collectors as well as their electrochemical stability are measured using linear sweep voltammetry against zinc and lithium anodes. Finally, the rate performance and long‐term cycling stability of lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4) cathodes are measured against lithium anodes with these current collectors and their performance is compared. These results show which current collector to choose depends on the application and cell chemistry. Laser induced graphene (LIG), prepared directly with an in situ synthesis method onto Kraft Paper substrates, is proposed for the manufacture of biodegradable electronic devices. The investigation explores the influence of laser power and scanning speed on the properties of LIG conductive tracks and a sheet resistance of up to 0.25 kΩ sq−1. Raman spectroscopy and microscopy is used to analyse the interfacial properties, in particular the transition of cellulose fibers to carbonized graphene flakes through photothermal pyrolysis, leading to the formation of coral‐like structures. To demonstrate the applicability of the approach, flexible resistive heaters have been manufactured and tests show rapid heating with a homogeneous distribution and a maximum temperature of 145.5 °C. Additionally, an electro‐thermal conversion efficiency (hr+c) of 17.05 mW (°C cm2)−1 is achieved. Finally, a comparative Life Cycle Assessment with FR‐4 based electronics has been undertaken and the environmental impacts are calculated. The impact assessment shows a two magnitude lower impact on the environment for most categories, which suggests the approach is beneficial for the environment at a global production level. BACKGROUND: The design of new‐generation flexible sensors for medical applications has gained considerable interest in the research community in recent past years. Herein, a free‐standing flexible electrode was developed for the electrochemical determination of Paracetamol (PC). This graphene‐based paper electrode was prepared using graphene and MnCo2O4 dispersion with a mold‐casting method followed by chemical reduction. The morphology and structure of our flexible paper electrode (MnCo2O4/GP) were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy‐dispersive, X‐ray diffraction, X‐ray photoelectron, and Raman spectroscopy. RESULTS: The as‐prepared flexible MnCo2O4/GP showed outstanding sensing performance for PC, as compared to GP, due to the excellent electrochemical properties of MnCo2O4. The proposed sensor exhibited a wide linear range of 4.64–1000 μM for electrochemical determination of PC with a low detection limit of 1.39 μM. Furthermore, MnCo2O4/GP was successfully applied for PC syrup and tablets with good accuracy results. CONCLUSIONS: For the first time, the present study demonstrated the fabrication and utilization of MnCo2O4‐modified graphene paper to develop a flexible and sensitive electrode for monitoring PC. © 2024 The Author(s). With the development of the "paper instead of plastic" trend, the investigation into high‐density, heavy‐weight paper has emerged as a point of interest in both academic and industrial realms. Regrettably, the paper‐strengthening agents that are commercially available fall short of meeting the strength specifications for such papers. To rectify this shortcoming, a water‐based acrylate paper‐strengthening agent (AA) was developed through radical emulsion polymerization. The most stable acrylate emulsion was obtained by amalgamating the anionic emulsifier allyloxyammonium oxymethyl sulfate nonylphenol ethoxy sulfate (DNS‐86) with the nonionic emulsifier nonylphenol polyoxyethylene ether (OP‐10) at a proportion of 1:0.6, with a dosage of 3%. Substituting the conventional strengthening agent (styrene‐butadiene latex) with the synthesized acrylate emulsion in wet‐end addition markedly improved the paper strength, registering a 54.8% increase to 29.4 MPa. The introduction of carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (C‐CNF) further bolstered the mechanical properties of the paper, achieving a tensile strength of 41.44 MPa and an elongation at a break of 3.55%. These results underscore the efficacy of acrylate as a paper‐strengthening agent and the crucial role of C‐CNF in enhancing the structural integrity of paper materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Developing highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts in acidic media is essential for proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWEs). Especially for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), high overpotential is needed to overcome the high thermodynamic energy barrier of water splitting. Herein, we report a high‐efficiency self‐supported ternary alloy OER catalyst with high activity and good durability in acidic electrolytes by a simple electrodeposition method. The as‐prepared electrocatalyst consists of Ru, Au, and Mn alloy which is deposited on the carbon fiber paper (denoted as RuAuMn‐CFP). The RuAuMn‐CFP exhibits superior activity and only requires an overpotential of 131 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and outstanding stability of 30 h (10 mA cm−2) in acidic media, which outperforms the commercial Ru/C and Ir/C catalysts. Besides, at an overpotential of 140 mV, the RuAuMn‐CFP catalyst exhibited a remarkable mass activity of 29.63 mA/mg for OER. It is 7.9 times and 23.8 times higher than the commercial Ru/C and Ir/C catalysts (3.73 mA/mg, 1.24 mA/mg, respectively). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nucleic acid extraction (NAE) is crucial for molecular diagnostics but presents challenges in point‐of‐care testing (POCT) and decentralized settings. We developed a streamlined, paper‐based NAE method for hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA amplification, suitable for integration into POCT and lab‐on‐a‐chip systems. This method uses Fusion 5 paper discs, completing extraction in under 30 min without centrifugation. The nucleic acids on the disc can be directly used or eluted for amplification. We validated this method's compatibility with reverse transcription‐polymerase chain reaction (RT‐PCR), real‐time quantitative PCR (RQ‐PCR), and loop‐mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), demonstrating versatility across amplification platforms. Clinical evaluation (n = 60) showed 100% sensitivity and specificity with a low detection limit of ~101 IU/mL. Results matched those from standard HCV RQ‐PCR, confirming accuracy. Additionally, incorporating polyethylene glycol (PEG) improves extraction efficiency, eliminating the need for ethanol treatment and washing/drying steps. This modification enhances performance and suitability for field applications. Petroleum‐based compounds are widely used to enhance the hydrophobicity of paper but compromise its biodegradability. The development of biocompatible natural materials for the hydrophobic treatment of paper is of great significance. This study used corn starch (St) as raw material and prepared double‐modified starch (PT‐St) through dual modification of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and tetradecyl succinic anhydride (TDSA). The conditions for double modification starch were optimized through single‐factor and orthogonal experiments. The effects of PT‐St modified starch on the mechanical properties, hydrophobicity, and barrier properties of different paper types were studied. The results showed that the tensile index of 100% waste pulp (WEP), wood pulp (hardwood pulp: softwood pulp = 7:3) (WDP), and 100% bamboo pulp (BOP) coated with PT‐St increased by 44.11%, 37.41%, and 20.39%, respectively, and the contact angle was 118.42°, 120.17° and 122.37°, respectively. The water vapor transmission rate decreased by 35.03%, 20.32% and 21.83%, respectively. To meet the pressing demand for alternative biofuel in the contemporary world, the production cost of biodiesel has to be decreased. Hence, this work addresses the usage of CaCO3‐rich industrial waste produced in a local paper industry in Assam, India for the synthesis of a heterogeneous catalyst for biodiesel synthesis. The collected lime sludge waste was subjected to calcination at 800°C for 3 h producing a CaO‐rich catalyst which was then employed in the transesterification of cottonseed oil. The optimized reaction conditions obtained were 5 wt% catalyst concentration, oil to methanol molar ratio of 1:12 at 65°C temperature, and 3 h of reaction time. The catalyst's reusability was evaluated up to four cycles. Besides, the prepared catalyst has been characterized using Fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), powder X‐ray Diffraction (p‐XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X‐ray analysis (EDX), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) techniques and its basicity was measured using Hammett indicators. Moreover, the biodiesel obtained was characterized with 1H‐nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 13C‐NMR, Gas Chromatography‐ Mass Spectrometry (GC–MS), and FTIR techniques. A biodiesel yield of 98.03% was achieved and the quality of biodiesel formed during the transesterification of CSO also conforms to EN 14214 and ASTM D 6751 standards. In response to these concerns, this paper puts forth recommendations for effective strategies to mitigate these risks. Providing a road‐map for enhancing security and privacy in IoT environments. Furthermore, this review thoroughly assesses a multitude of solutions proposed by various authors, with the primary aim of enhancing security and privacy within the IoT landscape. Electronic medical records are a patient's digital asset that enhances the information available to doctors for tracking their patients' health. When this information is stored in a secure environment, health examination reports can serve as a dependable repository for thorough observation of a patient's well‐being. However, it is crucial for the owner to have control over access to these repositories. In this scenario, a blockchain ecosystem with appropriate access control mechanisms can help create a distributed and decentralized storage platform to ensure the safety and security of data. Developing cost‐effective smart contracts and creating clear design diagrams to represent them are essential for establishing such an ecosystem. This paper introduces a smart contract for the Ethereum blockchain that allows an owner to maintain control over their data. The paper presents a diagram for visually representing the modules within our smart contract, providing readers with a clearer understanding of the access control techniques utilized in implementing our strategies. Our smart contract offers clinicians a valuable means of accessing historical data to promptly evaluate a patient's health in emergency situations. We showcase its efficacy by illustrating how it streamlines insurance claims, where it verifies the patient's coverage and automatically authorizes medical expense payments. Lastly, a study is presented to showcase an effective method of storing the ingested data within the Ethereum network. The suggested approach allows restrictions on data visibility based on the viewer's accessibility through identity‐based access control achieved using additional structures in smart contracts. These structures store filtered records accessible to users based on their viewing privileges. The simulated test bed results support the efficiency of using smart contracts with additional structures in terms of gas consumption when compared to those that use a single structure for read and write operations. Following the Mongol invasion of China, the Yuan (1260–1368) dynasty was the first political regime to introduce a precious metal standard and deploy paper money as the sole legal tender. Drawing on a new dataset on money issues, prices, warfare, imperial grants, taxation, natural disasters, and population, we find that a silver standard initially consolidated the Chinese currency market. However, persistent fiscal pressures eventually compelled rulers to ease the monetary standard, and a fiat standard was adopted. We show that inflation was high in the early and late periods of the dynasty but remained moderate for nearly half a century. We find that military pressure, particularly civil war, generated fiscal demands that led to the over‐issuance of money. By contrast, natural disasters and imperial grants did not trigger the over‐issue of money. Warfare was much more likely to increase paper money issues under the fiat standard than during the silver standard period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This technical note describes in detail a method for associating individual sheets of blank A4 white paper from the same ream by the physical fit of machine‐cut edges. A large‐scale laboratory trial involving ~700 sheets of paper from 24 different reams (plus one spoiled sample), and more than 20,000 potential physical fits, correctly associated and sequenced 219 pairs of sheets together with a 100% empirical success rate and no false associations. The edge profile of each short machine‐cut end of a sheet of A4 paper allows us to physically fit sheets of paper from the same ream to each other and use this to predict the sequence of sheets in a set of documents. In a real‐life scenario, it may now be possible to detect the substitution or addition of a sheet in a multipage document, link documents from different sources to each other or to a common source of paper (e.g. to paper from a seized printer or from an accused's address) or to date documents. The development of green and efficient bio‐based flame retardants is very important for the development of flame‐retardant cellulosic paper. In this study, a novel type of starch‐based synergistic flame retardant (SAPU) was prepared using corn starch as carbon sources, amino trimethylphosphonic acid, and urea as phosphorus and nitrogen sources through the one‐pot method. Subsequently, the flame‐retardant cellulosic paper was prepared by impregnation, and the flame retardancy of the cellulosic paper was evaluated by vertical combustion, limiting oxygen index (LOI), and thermogravimetric analysis. The results demonstrated that the SAPU exhibited a favorable flame‐retardant effect on cellulosic paper. At a concentration of 25.0%, the vertical burning residue of flame‐retardant paper accounted for 49.16% of the total length of the paper sample, while the LOI was 39.4%. The tensile strength and burst index of cellulosic paper were found to be decreased by 6.36% and 19.1%, respectively, in comparison to the base paper. Conversely, the ring crush strength was observed to be increased by 156.2%. The carbon residue rate at 700°C under a nitrogen atmosphere rose from 11.56% of the base paper to 28.77% of the flame‐retardant paper. The flame‐retardant SAPU effectively improved the thermal stability of cellulosic paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
