Purpose The purpose of this paper is to review the recent book A New History of Management (NHM) and to discuss the strengths and limitations of the book versus traditional management history as practiced by Wren and Bedeian.Design/methodology/approach I analyze NHM by looking at the evidence presented in the book versus the historical record.Findings Although there are some strengths to NHM, the scholars often fail to address the larger historical evidence, which reduces the value of their work.Originality/value The value is to start a discussion of the nature of management history by discussing traditional versus postmodern history. Purpose -- The purpose of this paper is to present a brief review and analysis of "The Breakthrough Challenge: 10 Ways to Connect Today's Profits With Tomorrow's Bottom Line". Design/methodology/approach -- This article consists of a literature review of a recently published book. Findings -- The volume puts forth the idea that the corporate world is in the process of adopting a new measure of bottom-line profitability around environmental, social and economic responsibilities. It proposes that for change needed in the rising anthropocene, the private sector must lead. Purpose -- The purpose of this paper is to present an extended book review of "The Physical University". Design/methodology/approach -- This article takes the form of a literature review focusing on one title. Findings -- This is an uneven collection of fragments of conventional late twentieth-century thinking about the physical campus. The future of the physical university, the campus is in doubt. Yet, only two of the dozen authors engage in this existential question. Originality/value -- The collection of articles ranges from purely philosophical to moderately practical. It is a poor summary of current thought and offers little guidance for dealing with the evolving future of the physical university. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose -- The purpose of this paper is an expanded review of "Wired for Success". Design/methodology/approach -- This article comprises an extended book review. Findings -- The authors do not address the critical insight of Peter Drucker that the "campus" as it exists today will exist in a new, undefined set of embodiments in the future. It also fails to consider the changing environment of and expectations for educational institutions, as competencies and other criteria not only change the very nature of education but also as "big data" can support more complex relationships for knowledge acquisition, globally. Originality/value -- This review provokes and challenges the readers to challenge their own and the authors' thoughts of what could and how education would evolve in light of the discomfort of many with current models and outcomes. Purpose: The purpose of this chapter is to provide a personal-professional reflection on Canadian author Toni Samek's learning since publication of her 2007 book project entitled Librarianship and human rights: A twenty-first century guide. Methodology/approach: The reflection, written in first-person and accessible terms appealing to a broad readership, is structured by the following sections: introduction; privilege and position; sobering experiences; the risk factor; a common project; unease; expectation; and, closing thoughts. Practical implications: This endeavor encourages contributors to the field of library and information studies to situate their work within micro (individuals), meso (institutions), and macro (society) level understandings of privilege and power, including respect for the compassion and conviction demonstrated by street-level library and information workers who may never be rewarded for their good fights, or worse, may suffer loss(es) because of them. Originality/value: This reflective work affirms the book's original dedication in Librarianship and human rights: A twenty-first century guide to the many courageous library and information workers throughout the world and through the generations who have taken personal and professional risk to push for social change, as well as the enduring value of librarianship and human rights as a common project and one that involves both learning and unlearning. Librarianship and human rights: A twenty-first century guide was used as an example, when in 2007, activist librarian proposed the subject heading "critical librarianship" to the Cataloging and Support Office of the Library of Congress.
