This article presents information on some changes, which have been made in the syllabus of courses taught at Alfred University, Alfred, New York. The course taught by Robert A. Myers, professor of anthropology and public health, takes a complete look at many "improvements" people make to their bodies in the name of culture, identity and beauty. According to Myers much of the class focuses on body modifications that are accepted as the norm in contemporary American culture. Myers places particular emphasis on how practices like tattooing, which developed from a stigma to a sign of Angelina Jolie-style hipness, have been adopted by mainstream culture.
