Starting with Warsaw themes in the works of Pablopavo (Paweł Sołtys) - which have dominated previous research papers - the article signalizes their role in describing not only the rapidly changing city itself, but also its inhabitant's sense of inadequacy. Most of all, the analysis of the songs from different albums, from Telehon (2009) to Mozaika (2022), and from different musical projects (Pablopavo solo, the band Pablopavo i Ludziki, Pablopavo recording with Naprawdę Duży Zespół, with Praczas or with Praczas and Anna Iwanek) deals with motifs not discussed before, e.g. the vision of home, that can be a shield against the evil world, but can have the dark side or be used as a way to show the duality of the human mind. The metaphors created by Pablopavo are also interpreted in the article: the conceptual metaphors, as the versions of the structural metaphor LIFE IS A JOURNEY (a turn, an elevator, a railway station, a map), the orientational metaphors (mixing the dimensions) and the metaphors that blend space and time. The reflections profiled this way reveal the potential of these topics and figures in straightening out the mind and the memories, as well as in identifying the human position in space - the space understood more in terms of existence as space. POLISH literature ,LITERARY criticism ,COLLEGE students ,COLLEGE teaching ,PHILOSOPHY of history - Abstract
The paper is devoted to an analysis of a 1826 speech O powołaniu i obowiązkach młodzieży akademickiej (On Vocation and Duties of University Students) delivered by Kazimierz Brodziński (1791-1835), Polish literature professor at the Royal University of Warsaw. The speech intended to explain the students the system of studies and contained pieces of advice about the student's individual work and conformation to the University's rules and regulations. The paper additionally had another layer, unnoticed by scholars to this date, namely a voice in the dispute about the future of university. Facing the plans of the Department of Education that aimed to split the University into specialist schools, a part of which was to be located outside Warsaw, Brodziński stresses the unity of university teaching and the importance of general subjects as, for example, philosophy or literary history. Brodziński also kept clear distance from the then system of supervising university students. His views on university didactics are confronted with the conceptions of Józef Kasalanty Szaniawski (1764-1843), the State's Councillor and a conservative politician, who was in charge of education of the Kingdom of Poland. SMART cities ,TECHNOLOGICAL innovations ,URBAN renewal ,URBAN growth ,LITERATURE - Abstract
The smart city concept, which is a consequence of the doctrine of sustainable development and technological change, has gained popularity in the international arena over the last decade. A discussion of the world literature indicates the need for intensive efforts, both in the areas of science and business practice, to implement, monitor and develop the smart city concept. The aim of the paper is to explain the specificity of the smart city concept on the basis of a systematic literature review and to identify the process of Warsaw’s adaptation to the smart city concept. The publication uses the methodology based on a systematic review of literature pertaining to the development of the smart city concept and functioning of smart city models. The analysis, which uses case study elements, has been carried out on the basis of available reports, rankings and official documents of the city of Warsaw. As a result, city characteristics indicating the level of development of Warsaw as a smart city have been presented. The analysis explains the mechanisms of implementing smart undertakings in Warsaw, providing at the same time the basis for indicating the city’s resilience model as an adaptive model adequate for the city. The authors’ considerations, focused on the development of the smart city concept, have resulted in a proposal of a smart city model. They also reveal a research perspective focused on Polish cities. The paper attempts to reconstruct Leopold Buczkowski's complicated war biography, which today remains the least penetrated period of his life. Resorting to the available sources, especially the ascertainments by Justyna Staroń, Zygmunt Trziszka, Jan Tomkowski, and Hanna Kirchner, as well as including Buczkowski's own statements, the author of the sketch reconstructs the life of Buczkowski until the outbreak of the World War II: the history of September campaign of 1939, the years he spent in the village Podkamień, conspiracy, participation in the Warsaw Uprising, as well as after the war when he produced and completed Czarny potok (Black Torrent). Questioning for the unclear places in Buczkowski's life, the author strives to restore the most probable train of events and points at those issues that deserve closer attention in future studies. WORLD War II ,NINETEENTH century ,NUNS ,WAR ,CONVENTS ,ARCHES ,ABSTRACT painting - Abstract
The paper presents the history, primarily the twentieth-century history, of a painting titled Lamentation [Opłakiwanie], at the present moment displayed on the northern wall of the presbytery of the Church of the Visitation Order in Warsaw. The study is based primarily on documents held in the Archives of the Convent of the Visitation Order in Warsaw. The painting, created by Jan Reisner, in 1698 was donated by his wife to the convent of the Sisters of the Visitation in Warsaw. According to the preserved inventories, it decorated the main altar in one of the chapels and was later kept in the sacristy, while in the nineteenth century it hung on the northern wall of the presbytery, opposite the cloister choir. This was its location until the outbreak of the Second World War. Shortly after the fall of the Warsaw Uprising, it was removed from the church and disappeared in unclear circumstances. At the end of 1947 and in early 1948, one of the nuns came across it in the Church of the Holy Saviour in Warsaw. Extant correspondence records how the nuns attempted to recover the painting and reveals the dramatic fortunes of the work in the final months of the war and after its end. The painting, found shortly after the entry of the Red Army to Warsaw on 17 January 1945, was handed over to Father Wacław Majewski, the then parish priest in the arch-cathedral of St. John the Baptist. He commissioned its conservation and decided to place the work in the church. Eventually, the painting returned to the Church of the Visitation Order in October 1948. In 1968, it underwent thorough conservation which not only made it possible to determine the scale of damage, but also revealed the preserved original sections. Shortly after its completion, a paper by Mariusz Karpowicz was published; the author attributed the painting to Jan Reisner, a court painter of King Jan III, who at that time was quite unknown. POLISH language ,NINETEENTH century ,RECOMMENDED books ,PRAYERS ,JEWISH women ,PRAYER ,SYNAGOGUES - Abstract
In the nineteenth century, only two prayer books for Jewish women and girls were published in the Polish language: one written by Jakub Elsenberg (Warsaw 1855) and the other by Rozalia Saulson (Warsaw 1861). This small number contrasts with the numerous editions of tkhines in Yiddish and Andachts- and Gebetbücher in German. The aim of the paper is to discuss the circumstances of the creation of both books and specificity of these editions. The origins of the users of the Warsaw’s prayer books according to the list of subscribers (and using the data of genealogical sources) are also considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EASTER Rising, Ireland, 1916 ,POLITICAL participation ,PSYCHOLOGICAL stress ,ATTITUDE change (Psychology) ,RESONANCE - Abstract
The author of the paper describes the ways in which the Polish press were informed about the Easter Rising, sources of gaining this knowledge (Reuters Agency and European daily newspapers); particularly, he makes analysis of political commentaries which were published in Warsaw, Cracow and Lvov newspapers. He shows a specific character of Polish reaction to the events in Ireland, which was rooted in the analogy of historical destiny of both nations, and gained a particularly strong resonance on the turn of April and May 1916. The author points out to the causes of this resonance of which a gradual change in the attitude of the Polish society towards Germany was the most important. The permission of German authorities-in-occupation for a great national manifestation in Warsaw on 3 May 1916 strengthened the orientation towards the central states which was evidenced by the participation of the political figuring on Germany in this event. Reports of the fall of the uprising in Ireland and the accompanying commentaries coincided with comprehensive accounts of manifestation celebrating 125th anniversary of 3rd May Constitution, which was of significant importance for the reception of the Easter Rising. Emotional stress in Warsaw, strongly stimulating patriotic feelings, created an extremely emotional attitude towards the uprising in Dublin experienced by Poles as a charter almost from their history. PROFESSIONALISM ,ART historians ,ART materials ,MUSEUM curators ,NATIONAL museums - Abstract
Dr Bożena Steinborn is an eminent art historian and museologist, a now-retired curator of the National Museum in Wrocław (formerly the Silesian Museum) and vice-director of the institution in the years 1979–1983. After that date she returned to her native Warsaw. She worked in Wrocław for thirty pioneering years, after graduation from the University of Warsaw in 1952. In an interview with Anna Markowska, she talks about her professional activities from 1953, when she settled in the Lower Silesia. During that time her attention was focused on organizing the painting department, many temporal and touring shows and lectures, creating the collection, working on archive documents, preparing scholarly papers. She recalls i.a. the process of creation of the Gallery of European Painting in the museum, which opened in 1973. An important element of the conversation is her work with Lower Silesian monuments. It is thanks to art and monuments of material culture that the city, “this foreign, ruined land”, for many a place of temporary stay, became for Bożena Steinborn a new home, and “the most important” – as she says – place in the world. In her story she also reveals her family background, as well as events and people who had the strongest influence on her professional attitude. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PERSONNEL changes ,MANAGEMENT styles ,EMPLOYEES ,ARTISTS ,COMPARATIVE studies - Abstract
The article focuses on the presentation of the circumstances under which Izabella Cywińska resigned as the Artistic Director of the Ateneum Theatre. The author tries to discover the roots of this notorious failure by comparing Cywińska's activities with those implemented by Stefan Jaracz. The comparative analysis of the two management strategies covers the managers' previous experience, repertoire and personnel policies, and internal and external conflicts. Cywińska's turbulent three- -year tenure provides a good opportunity to take a look at the situation when new repertoire and personnel changes argue with the expectations of actors accustomed to different methods and embodying different values. The paper attempts to answer the question of why the changes described by Cywińska as evolution could have been perceived by the artists as revolution. The confrontation of the two management styles gives one a chance to look at her tenure from a broader and less obvious perspective. Moreover, it shows that the intention of carrying out Jaracz's last will and testament was doomed to fail. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper reflects on sender-recipient relations characteristic for the participants of a narrative interview with a witness of history. The research material comprises 1931 verbal activities, collected in the Archive of Oral History of The Warsaw Rising Museum, of people who conducted 32 meetings with participants of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. The application of the interactive concept of text allowed us to create a preliminary typology of the activities of meeting leaders, viz. to identify four types of initiation: the opening, the complementary, the deepening and ordering, and the reactive one. Further analyses led to the identification of roles taken on by people who conduct meetings with witnesses of history, which we named the journalist, the researcher, and the friend. The reviewer points at the source, fact-collecting, and analytical changes referring to the first editions of the studies; accentuates the revealing aspects of the studies, new recognitions for the state of research in the Polish Enlightenment, and inclusion into the examination of prophetic texts of amusement character. Attention is also paid to the diversity of the author's workshop, the methods of analysis she uses, and abundance of texts she uses in her investigations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CONFORMITY ,PRISMS ,REFLECTIONS ,ANALOGY ,OPPONENTS ,POETRY (Literary form) - Abstract
Józef Elsner's and Józef Franciszek Królikowski's literary theoretical statements about the reciprocal relationships between poetry and music form the subject of the article. Marking the numerous convergences in the aesthetic views expressed by the two figures, the author of the paper also concentrates on the polemical threads. She first and foremost focuses on such aspects of Królikowski's thought that allow to view him as an opponent of perceiving the music-literature relationship through the prism of strict conformity between the arts, and she points at Elsner as at an advocate of those views. In this approach, the reflection of Warsaw pseudo-classicist authors concentrated mainly on the modes of forming "poems for singing" not only precedes the modern discourse on the Polish syllabic-accentual verse, but also commences a Polish discussion on the "musicality" of poetry understood in the context of close analogies and correspondance des arts. The article describes "Wymiennik" -- Warsaw system which uses the alternative currency "alterka". The main aim of the paper is to think over how the creators of the initiative understand their resistance to consumption practices and to what extent their activism leads to socio-economic change. The categories by Marek Krajewski concerning on nonconformist lifestyles are used; it turned out that the most useful concept is "discreet resistance". To get knowledge about "Wymiennik" I conducted 12 in-depth interviews and two years of participatory observation, furthermore I analyzed materials published or recommended by the creators of the system. LITERATURE translations ,FACTORS of production ,POLISH history ,RUSSIAN literature ,TRANSLATING & interpreting ,TRANSLATORS - Abstract
The article discusses the first critical edition of Seweryn Pollak's translations of Boris Pasternak's essays (Warszawa: Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego 2021). The collection prepared by Katarzyna Gędas, Piotr Mitzner, and Żaneta Nalewajk invites its readers to develop a multifocal reading that attends simultaneously to (1) the complex historical, social, political and economic factors involved in the production of translations and its relationship to reading communities (both in Soviet Russia and in the Polish People's Republic), (2) Pasternak's personal and creative biography, (3) Pasternak's views on the tasks of art, literature and artistic translation, (4) the history of the Shakespearean translations in Russian, (5) modernist concepts of literary translation, (6) the essayistic and translational legacy of Seweryn Pollak, and, last but not least, (7) Pollak's unpublished archives. Particularly the last of the mentioned research areas leaves a sense of insufficiency, incompleteness and regret in the reader's mind. As sadly reported by the editors of the collection, Pollak's archives have not yet been duly classified and examined, despite their compelling importance for the history of Polish literary translation and translation studies. The translator's manuscripts remain scattered across various institutions and still await sustained scholarly attention and coordinated elaboration in a search for their secrets. CODIFICATION of law ,CIVIL procedure ,CRIMINAL law ,CIVIL law ,LEGAL procedure - Abstract
The present paper is an introduction to the source edition of thirteen documents concerning the organization of the Civil Reform Committee and the Committee's work on changes in civil law and civil procedure. The Civil Reform Committee was appointed by Tsar Alexander I on 19 May 1814 in connection with the plan to transform the Duchy of Warsaw into the Kingdom of Poland, a Russian client state. Participants of the Committee's works were Adam Jerzy Czartoryski, Mikołaj Nowosilcow, Tomasz Ostrowski, Stanisław Zamoyski, Tadeusz Matuszewicz, Aleksander Linowski, Józef Kalasanty Szaniawski, Tomasz Wawrzecki, Franciszek Grabowski, Antoni Bieńkowski, Józef Koźmian, and Andrzej Horodyski. The Committee's goal was to prepare a reform of the administration, the treasury, and the codes of civil and penal law. The Tsar's guidelines urged the Committee to sever all ties with the French models and to draw from native traditions. As regards civil law and civil procedure, the works reached a moderate degree of advancement. Only outlines of the future codes and fragmentary legislative drafts were prepared. Even though these works may be deemed to have been a beginning of Polish codification of law within the modern meaning of the word, the documents used in this process have been heretofore used sparsely by historians, including historians of law. Thus the need for their publication. At the same time we are publishing fundamental documents concerning the organization of the Committee itself. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MUSICAL performance ,POPULAR music ,OPERA ,SONGBOOKS ,AUDIENCES ,MELODY ,MELODIES (Songs) - Abstract
The article discusses the circumstances accompanying the dissemination of one of the most popular European 18
th c. theatre melodies that, as so-called "Venetian song," was known to Warsaw audience from the year 1790 when, as Dominic's song was heard in Taczka occiarza (The Vinegar Maker's Wheelbarrow), a play translated and adapted to the Polish audience by Wojciech Bogusławski. The paper also reveals the mechanisms that impede recognition of the melody's Italian original, namely the aria La mia crudel tiranna (The Maid of Lodi), from the year 1749 inserted into many European comic operas, and at the turn of the 18th and 19th c. was popular in salon music performances of various nature (from occasional, satirical songs of political character to freemasonic ballads). The evidence of the strong presence of the "Venetian song" in the 18th and 19th c. music culture is found in many documents of the epoch, both in musical prints and in French, English, Irish, and American songbooks. The sources acknowledge the many variation transformations of the melody and its contrafact usage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

POLITICAL science ,POLISH politics & government - Abstract
This paper aims to present the history of the School of Political Sciences in Warsaw since 1915 to the beginning of WWII. It is also an attempt to depict its origins and the evolution of its academic model inspired by the Paris Institute of Political Studies (École Libre des Sciences Politiques). The School of Political Sciences is shown from the perspective of former Polish émigrés in the Circle of former Polish students from Leipzig, led by Edmund Jan Reymann. Reyman, the founder and head of the school, brought about the setting up of the Social Institute (IS). The paper focuses on the role the School of Political Sciences in Warsaw, which operated from a modernistic building, played in the development of political sciences both in the capital and across the country. The school had become an academic centre equipped with modern facilities like specialist studies, libraries, research institutes and rich collections. Under the auspices of the school and IS many publishing activities were undertaken, the flagship being the Encyclopedia of Political Sciences, the biggest publication devoted to political sciences in the inter‑war period. This had led to the school acquiring the status of the Academy of Political Sciences in 1939. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sara Gliksman-Fajtlowicz, a painter, came from a well-off family of Majerowiczs, the owners of opticians’ shops in Łódź. She studied at private painting and drawing schools in Łódź and Warsaw. Before the outbreak of World War II, she was active in the Polish art milieu. In 1933, she became a member of the Trade Union of Polish Artists (Związek Zawodowy Polskich Artystów Plastyków, ZZPAP) and participated in its exhibitions in Łódź, Warsaw, Kraków, and Lviv. She painted mainly landscapes, still lifes, and—less frequently—portraits. She published her works in the union magazine Forma. In 1940, she was displaced to the Łódź ghetto where she worked as a graphic artist at the Statistics Department. Thanks to this she could obtain art materials. Her clandestine activity was documenting life in the ghetto in paintings and drawings. She survived the liquidation of the ghetto and then was forced to work on cleaning this area. Liberated on 19 January 1945, she returned to her house where some of her prewar works had survived. After 1945 she continued her artistic career and exhibited with the ZZPAP, as well as with the Jewish Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts. In 1957, she emigrated to Israel. Gliksman died in Tel Aviv in 2005. The aim of this article is to verify and describe Sara Gliksman’s biography, to present her activities in the Polish-Jewish artistic community of postwar Poland, as well as to place her works in the context of issues concerning survivors’ memory and artistic attitudes toward the Holocaust, and art as a manifestation of hope for the rebirth of Jewish life and culture in postwar Poland in the second half of the 1940s and the beginning of the 1950s.
