To enhance the mechanical and constructional performance of the ultra‐high performance concrete (UHPC) beams, the steel plate placed at the bottom surface of the UHPC beam is utilized to replace the ordinary steel rebars. In this paper, four 3.2 m UHPC T‐shaped beams with different reinforcement patterns of ordinary steel rebars and external steel plate were fabricated and comparatively tested under flexure loading. Their damage patterns, load versus deflection behavior, flexural capacity, load versus strain behavior, moment versus curvature behavior, stiffness, and crack development were investigated. The flexural experiments indicated that the external steel plate, positioned at the bottom surface of the UHPC members, could resolve the difficulty of installing ordinary steel rebars in slender UHPC components and improve its constructional performance. Compared with the inside steel rebar reinforcement, the employment of the steel plate at the bottom surface of the UHPC beam can effectively increase the distance from the neutral axis to the tensile reinforcement at the serviceability and ultimate states, thereby improving its flexural capacity and stiffness. Additionally, the configuration of the external steel plate was beneficial to reduce the tensile stress level of the tensile reinforcement and limit the opening of UHPC crack width, and thus their crack resistance can be effectively enhanced. Silica, a principal component of waste glass powder (GP) reacts with calcium hydroxide to form the hydration products, and the process is affected by the fineness of GP and the percentage of cement replaced. This study investigates the structural behavior of concrete incorporating GP in reinforced concrete members by 0%–25% (by weight) replacement of cement with GP along with 0%–0.45% addition of glass fibers (GFs). The compressive and tensile strengths, strength activity index (SAI), and failure mode of treated concrete mixtures have revealed the optimum values as 15% replacement of cement with GP with 0.3% of GF. In the second stage of experiment, reinforced concrete beams were cast at various percentages of GP and GF to investigate the load–deflection response. It was observed that the beam specimen treated with GP exhibited considerably less mid‐span deflection (14.8 mm) at failure as compared to the control beam (with no GP and GF) which failed at 29.4 mm. The beam specimen treated with GP only showed significant degradation in stiffness after the peak load due to the fact that a part of GP remains unreacted and acts as a filler. Moreover, the beam specimen cast at optimum percentages of GP (15%) and GF (0.3%) showed large mid‐span deflection and higher failure load as compared to the control beam. These results suggest that the partial replacement of cement with GP should be accompanied by the addition of fibers to avoid unwanted brittle responses of GP concrete, with the additional advantage of reducing the non‐biodegradable waste. Ultra‐high performance concrete (UHPC) prefabricated beams are competitive in accelerated bridge construction. However, their broader application has been hindered by limited large‐scale tests and inaccurate design methods. To fill this gap, the authors conducted an experimental investigation on the shear and flexural performance of UHPC pi‐beams using two full‐scale specimens. One specimen was a precast UHPC beam, while the other was a composite beam with a normal concrete slab on the UHPC beam. The primary focus was on crack propagation, ultimate capacities, and failure modes. To complement the experimental findings, the extended finite element method (XFEM) was developed as a numerical approach. Nevertheless, relying solely on XFEM to understand real structural behavior is prone to misinterpretations. Moreover, the shear and flexural capacities were evaluated using existing codes and compared with the experimental results. The comparisons revealed that the predictions of shear capacities were at least 15% lower than the experimental values, whereas the flexural capacities showed acceptable agreement. A novel posttensioning technique using nickel‐titanium‐niobium (NiTiNb) shape memory alloy (SMA) wires for the repair of reinforced concrete beams was evaluated numerically. A finite element model of a reinforced concrete beam was developed within a damage mechanics framework to simulate concrete cracking and subsequent posttensioning. The predicted yield and ultimate moment capacities of the simulated posttensioned beams were up to 14% less than the corresponding experimental results. Cumulative discrepancies in the assumed material models led to the conservative model results. The effects of concrete tensile damage, SMA reinforcement ratio, SMA‐concrete interaction (bonded vs. unbonded), and the effective prestress on the service and ultimate behavior of the posttensioned beam were evaluated. Partial loss of prestress in the SMA due to elastic shortening of the concrete was insignificant (<3%) because of the relatively low elastic modulus of the SMA. Increasing the SMA reinforcement ratio by three times increased the yield moment of the posttensioned beam by 99%. Reducing the effective SMA prestress to 80% of the initial prestress to account for the possible losses resulted in a decrease in the yield moment by up to 7.8%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High‐performance fiber‐reinforced concrete (HPFRC) can be considered a promising material for the construction of precast concrete girders for road bridges. This paper presents conceptual considerations and numerical analysis to support this statement. The HPFRC is a compromised alternative between FRC and UHPFRC mixes. Specifically, a tailor‐made mix design of HPFRC jointly developed by ACCIONA and the authors is presented, and then compared with the other types of fiber‐reinforced concretes collected from the technical literature. In addition, some trends observed in the database are described. This material characterization is followed by a conceptual analysis of the advantages of the application of HPFRC to road bridges. Specifically, a proposed bridge for the case of a 60 m‐span box girder is analyzed. A comparison between alternatives based on the use of HPFRC and conventional reinforced concrete is discussed. The results shed light on the viability of this material for bridge application. Specifically, the main finding show potential significant material savings in structural elements of the superstructure. Investigations on steel fiber reinforced concrete (RC) beams in torsion show, that the steel fibers positively influence the torsional load‐bearing behavior. Since a systematic evaluation of the previously known test results and the derivation of a generally valid design model were lacking until recently, current codes such as Model Code 2010 do not contain any design models for the consideration of the steel fiber load‐bearing effect in the torsion design. Due to this, the existing torsion tests on steel fiber RC were summarized in a database. Furthermore, on the basis of the test results and observations, the space truss model developed by Rausch and later refined by Lampert and Thürlimann, among others, was further developed and supplemented by additional longitudinal and transverse steel fiber tension struts. In this work, fracture monitoring of steel and GFRP bars reinforced concrete beams in flexure is investigated by using non‐destructive acoustic emission (AE) and digital image correlation (DIC) techniques. The combined methodology provides complementary information from 'the ear' aided by the AE and from 'the eye' aided by the DIC. AE waveform parameters of the number of AE hits and their amplitudes, cumulative signal strength (CSS), average frequency, and rise‐time successfully pick‐up the divergent cracking initiation and fracture progression in steel‐reinforced concrete (RC) and GFRP‐RC beams. AE‐XY plots and longitudinal strain profiles obtained from DIC give an early, online, and real‐time representation of progressive AE activity and strains inside concrete much before it is visible to the naked eye. AE in conjunction with DIC was able to efficaciously depict the micro‐and‐macro cracks evolution and their advancement in steel‐RC and GFRP‐RC at various stages of loading Moreover, DIC identified critical damage areas as a function of loading periods, while AE was capable of monitoring the damage process and revealed changes in the overall behavior. It is successfully demonstrated that combined AE and DIC monitoring can enhance non‐destructive monitoring skills in RC structures involving widely different steel and GFRP bars as reinforcements and depict efficaciously their fracture/cracking behavior. This paper proposes an innovative precast through‐girder system that can be used in shallow bridge structures. It discusses various components of the through‐girder system, including the edge (through) girders, transverse beams, and longitudinal and transverse connections. The through girders are made of precast concrete box beam segments that are spliced longitudinally through posttensioning. The precast prestressed transverse beams span between the through‐girders involving the use of transverse posttensioning. An important feature of this system is to implement ultra‐high performance concrete (UHPC) at the all joints. The use of UHPC allows to minimizing the joint width and achieving superior durability. A numerical example is presented to demonstrate the analysis and design of the through‐girder bridge superstructure accounting for both high‐performance concrete (HPC) and UHPC options. In this study, steel reinforced grout (SRG) is proposed for shear strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams using the near‐surface embedded (NSE) technique. It is believed based on several research contributions in the literature that the NSE technique precludes or delays the onset of premature debonding and achieves higher strength increase in strengthened beams compared to the externally bonded (EB) counterpart. The tests conducted in this study used 13 RC beams to determine the shear behavior of RC beams strengthened in shear using SRG. The effect of the strengthening technique (NSE versus EB), SRG fabric density, strengthening scheme (side‐bonded vs. U‐wrapped), and the strengthening configuration (continuous vs. discontinuous) on RC shear enhancement was studied. The strengthening effectiveness of the SRG system was assessed in terms of the shear capacity, failure mechanism, load‐deflection response, and strain results. The NSE‐SRG increased the beam shear strength by an average of 100%, alleviated SRG debonding, and enhanced the deformation characteristics. The average increase in the shear strength of the EB‐SRG strengthened beam was 54% and 105% for the continuous and discontinuous SRG strips, respectively. An analytical model is proposed to predict the shear capacity of both the NSE‐SRG and EB‐SRG strengthened beams and give accurate and safe predictions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Present work demonstrates the experimental investigation on four large scale reinforced concrete (RC) beams cast with and without smart concrete to study strain and damage sensing properties (for health monitoring), effect of carbon fiber (CF) on ultimate strength, crack pattern, and stiffness response under monotonically increased loading. A total of four beams, one without and three with smart concrete (CF‐based concrete) having similar dimensions, similar percentage of reinforcement, similar aspect ratio, same grade of steel but having variable strengths of concrete were cast and tested for evaluating above said properties. Micro CFs were placed only in mid‐span region for a length of 350 mm and a depth of 55.5 mm at top and bottom surface of the beam from economical point of view for health monitoring. From obtained experimental results, it was found that RC beam embedded with smart concrete can be used for structural health monitoring (SHM) and obtained fractional change in resistance of smart concrete can be corelated with compressive strain in concrete and tensile strain in steel up to good extent. Along with strain and damage sensing properties, the effect of smart concrete on structural properties is also reported and it was found that, apart from showing positive results for SHM, it also increases ultimate strength carrying capacity of the same RC beam. The redistribution of moment within a statically indeterminate reinforced concrete beam at the ultimate limit state occurs through variations in the flexural rigidities and through the formation of hinges. The phenomena of moment redistribution (MR) is used to increase the efficiency of reinforced concrete design by allowing moments to be transferred away from critical cross sections thereby resulting in lower design moments. To allow for this effect in design, two main approaches are adopted. The first is to perform an elastic analysis and then to adjust the resulting distribution of moment using a codified MR factor. The second is to apply a plastic analysis allowing for the formation of hinges, and to calculate the rotational requirements at the hinges from first principles. This paper uses fundamental plastic analyses to derive closed‐form expressions for the hinge rotational requirements for full MR (that required to achieve the theoretical maximum applied load within the beam based on the moment capacity of sections within the beam). These closed‐form solutions are then used to quantify the maximum load on a beam when the rotational capacities at a hinge are less than the rotational requirements for full MR (partial MR). Realistic structural models incorporating the time‐dependent effects of concrete are essential in order to make accurate predictions of the time‐dependent deflections at any time of the service life. Experimental databases are used to calibrate and validate existing models for creep and shrinkage available in international standards. However, extensive research campaigns on large‐scale prestressed beams are scarce. In 1967–1985, a research program comprising a unique set of long‐term experimental data on concrete beams was conducted in joint collaboration with four Belgian research institutes to determine the influence of creep and shrinkage on the long‐term behavior of reinforced and prestressed concrete members. The main aim of the final part of the research campaign was the determination of the long‐term behavior of prestressed and partially prestressed beams subjected to permanent loads, considering the influence of the magnitude of the loads, the degree of prestressing, the shape of the cross‐section, the type of prestressing and the stress conditions. This paper reports on the obtained unique set of long‐term tests. Additionally, also information related to the creep and shrinkage data of prisms and the results of the static tests in a four‐point bending configuration until failure at the age of 28 days and 5 years are presented in this paper. The measurements of the prestressed members are compared with a simplified calculation method based on the direct stiffness method, which accounts for aging, creep, and shrinkage. The proposed simplified calculation model allows fast and accurate predictions of strains, stresses, and deflections as a function of time. The results show that the direct stiffness method in combination with the current models of EN1992‐1‐1 and fib Model Code 2010 can predict the long‐term behavior of concrete beams in good agreement with the available experimental data. The research allows to develop more accurate calculation guidelines with respect to the evolution of deflections, concrete deformations and stresses of prestressed beams as function of the prestress‐degree, shape of the cross‐section, and the type of prestressing. In this paper, seven specimens were designed to study the influence of the height (h), width (b), and reinforcement ratio (ρ) of ring beam on the failure mode, bearing capacity, deformation, and equivalent stress–strain relation of joint core reinforced with ring beam for connection of polyvinyl chloride fiber‐reinforced polymer confined concrete column and reinforced concrete beam. The experimental results indicated that the crushing of concrete in the joint core dominated the failure of specimens. The ultimate, yield bearing capacity and axial strain decreased with the increase of height, while raised with the improvement of width or reinforcement ratio. The growth of the strains of reinforcement and concrete accelerated with the increment of height, while decelerated with the rise of width or reinforcement ratio. Subsequently, based on the local compression theory, confined concrete theory, and the principle of superposition of multiple confinement, considering the influence coefficient of joint height βh and the enhancement coefficient of stirrups αs, a new formula was proposed to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of specimens under axial local compression. Then, on the basis of Mander's model, taking the correction parameter η into consideration, a new model of equivalent stress–strain relationship was established. The models to predict the shear behavior in reinforced concrete (RC) members are still far from be consensual. Thus, a detailed understanding of the physical phenomenon and a detailed monitoring of shear tests on RC members is fundamental. Identify and quantify separately the contribution of each component of the shear transfer mechanism it is a challenge. The traditional instrumentation usually results in the evaluation of a limited number of sections. Additionally, technologies based on image analysis have been applied to structural monitoring with excellent results. In this paper, the method Photo‐Shear, developed to monitoring shear tests based on photogrammetry, is presented. The method allows a better understanding of the shear strength mechanism by acquiring data from the surface of RC members. Then, postprocessing procedures leads to outputs with the redundancy and complementarity necessary to characterize: (a) displacement and strain fields; (b) overall shear deformation (distortion and rotation); (c) load path and direction of the compression strut; (d) shear cracks' characterization; and (e) the aggregate interlock effect. The method was validated by monitoring two RC beams tests. Based on the results obtained, several advantages of the proposed Photo‐Shear method were demonstrated over the traditional instrumentation, namely, the quantity and quality of the information obtained, and the redundancy and complementarity of the results analyzed. Most of the Dutch bridges were built around middle of the last century and it is vital for designers to find out if these bridges can still be considered safe for the traffic of modern times. The capacity in shear is especially critical as it was not considered in design recommendations before 1976. Therefore, experiments on a 1:2 scale model of a transversely prestressed concrete bridge deck cast between concrete girders were carried out to investigate the bearing (punching shear) capacity. The scale was selected based on the space available in the laboratory and the expected failure loads that would have to be applied. Also, a three‐dimensional, solid, nonlinear finite element model was developed in the Finite Element Analysis software package TNO DIANA to study the structural behavior of deck slabs and is the focus of this paper. The results of the experimental and numerical analyses leads to the conclusion that existing bridges still have significant residual strength due to the presence of transverse prestressing and the membrane forces, and nonlinear finite element models can predict the load carrying capacity quite accurately. The bond between concrete and steel reinforcing bars is a very important functional requirement of reinforced concrete as a composite building material. This paper focuses on the comparison between the outcomes of the investigation dealing with bond strength at different levels of depth of concrete. The levels of concrete can be found in reinforced concrete columns, walls, and slabs. This paper presents an experimental and analytical analysis of the pull‐out test on 32 concrete specimens. In the experimental part, eight concrete specimens grouped into normal self‐compaction concrete (SCC) and lightweight SCC, as well as mixtures between them, were tested. In each sample, four steel bars were embedded in concrete at different locations: at the top, two samples in the middle, and at the bottom of the sample. Moreover, the slip and bond strength of each steel bar was measured using the pull‐out test. It was found that, in all the studied mixes, the average bond strength is greater in normal SCC than in lightweight SCC. This study recorded about 27.86% difference for mix CM compared with mix MCF100. An analytical analysis of nonlinear finite element (FE) was conducted for 12 reinforced concrete specimens; three different mixes are considered. A nonlinear FE analysis has been carried out to analyze the specimens that were tested experimentally. The results obtained from the experimental analyses and FE are compared with each other. The construction of integral abutment bridges is becoming more common. Since these bridge structures have no expansion joints or bearings, it is possible to build low‐maintenance and long‐lasting structures. The length of most existing integral abutment bridges does not exceed 20 m, but larger lengths are also increasingly being implemented. Structures up to approximately 70 m are considered to be unproblematic. In longer integral abutment bridges, problems often occur in regard to surface cracks and settlements behind the abutments. To address these challenges, intensive research work has been conducted. A new jointless roadway transition structure for long integral abutment bridges has been developed at the Institute of Structural Engineering of TU Wien. The design principle of the new transition structure is based on the distribution of the deformations, which occur in the bridge due to temperature changes, shrinkage, creep, and external loading, over a longer area behind the abutment. Because the deformations are distributed, it is possible to build a seamless pavement structure across the expansion joint, from the bridge to the embankment. The Research Center for Road Engineering, TU Wien, has developed a special multilayer bituminous pavement structure just for this purpose. Based on the design considerations for the transition structure, a full‐scale prototype was built. The prototype was tested at various construction stages to obtain relevant data for practical use. Europe and United States exert a worldwide influence in the field of concrete control, proof of this is that many countries adopt their regulations, due to lack of own regulations. When there are problems with concrete strength, cores are used, and this situation usually involves two or more parties with different views on the proper interpretation of the core results. An experimental study was carried out, with five lots of prototypes concrete slabs of 20, 30, and 35 MPa specified strength, 210 cylinders of 10 × 20 cm, 296 cores of 10 cm diameter, and slenderness 2, as well as temperature and maturity control. Estimated strength of cores and cylinders was compared according to the criteria of European standards UNE‐EN 13791 and the American code ACI 318. Tests were performed at 3, 5, 7, and 28 days. It is concluded that the European and American regulations present similar results for concretes with specified strength between 30 and 35 MPa, whereas in the range of 16–30 MPa, the European standard is more rigorous than the American Code, being the latter more favorable to the concrete producer. This paper presents a simple yet accurate technique for determining the strength of steel fiber reinforced concrete beams loaded in pure torsion. The results of the model are compared with 21 beams found in the literature as well as two new beams tested by the authors and reported herein. The model considers the beneficial effect of the fibers in resisting tension after the concrete matrix has cracked, and it is implemented into the widely accepted space truss analogy for reinforced concrete members subjected to pure torsion. The proposed model provides good correlations to the collected test data with a test to predicted ratio of 1.10 and COV of 0.19. A simplified method of the aforementioned model, suitable for design, is also presented and is shown to provide good predictions to the test data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Moment redistribution has traditionally been considered as an ultimate limit state (ULS) phenomenon closely linked to considerations of reinforcement ductility. This paper demonstrates that a significant proportion of this redistribution will frequently occur at the serviceability limit state (SLS) because of the mismatch between the flexural stiffness assumed when calculating moments for the ULS and those actually occurring at the SLS owing to variations in the reinforcement layout along the member and the influence of cracking. This was demonstrated by tests on 37 two-span beams, the parameters investigated being values of redistribution, beam depth, reinforcement arrangements, concrete strength and the effect of brittle reinforcement. The results showed that there is scope for increasing the permissible limits for redistribution from supports into adjacent spans beyond those currently prescribed in design codes. This was supported by numerical modelling. However, considerations of crack width and reinforcement yield at the SLS may be limiting factors. Caution is advised if redistribution from the spans back to the supports is intended since it may prove difficult in practice to achieve the levels of redistribution anticipated in the design. This paper discusses the influence that two types of drilling fluid, bentonite and a polymer, have on the bond capacity of reinforcement bars that are cast in concrete placed under them. Test results from both laboratory specimens and site tests are discussed and the results compared to capacities predicted by various codes. It is shown that Eurocode 2 predicts the bond capacity of bars in concrete cast under bentonite well, providing the assumption of poor bond conditions is made. The results for bars in concrete cast under polymers are less clear and there appear to be significant differences between the performance on site and that in the laboratory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
