The eye possesses a paravascular solute transport pathway that is driven by physiological pulsations, resembling the brain glymphatic pathway. We developed synchronous multimodal imaging tools aimed at measuring the driving pulsations of the human eye, using an eye-tracking functional eye camera (FEC) compatible with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for measuring eye surface pulsations. Special optics enabled integration of the FEC with MRI-compatible video ophthalmoscopy (MRcVO) for simultaneous retinal imaging along with functional eye MRI imaging (fMREye) of the BOLD (blood oxygen level dependent) contrast. Upon optimizing the fMREye parameters, we measured the power of the physiological (vasomotor, respiratory, and cardiac) eye and brain pulsations by fast Fourier transform (FFT) power analysis. The human eye pulsated in all three physiological pulse bands, most prominently in the respiratory band. The FFT power means of physiological pulsation for two adjacent slices was significantly higher than in one-slice scans (RESP1 vs. RESP2; df = 5, p = 0.045). FEC and MRcVO confirmed the respiratory pulsations at the eye surface and retina. We conclude that in addition to the known cardiovascular pulsation, the human eye also has respiratory and vasomotor pulsation mechanisms, which are now amenable to study using non-invasive multimodal imaging of eye fluidics. It has been clearly confirmed that radiation therapy (RT) after breast conserving surgery (BCS) is an effective treatment modality comparable to mastectomy for early breast cancer. The purpose of this study was to further evaluate the accuracy of 3D surface imaging system (Sentinel) for breast cancer patients received BCS. The optical surface scans and CBCT scans were acquired before and immediately after couch movement correction. The deviation of the CBCT scans from the reference planning CT was considered an estimate for the residual errors for patient setup correction. The planning target volume (PTV) margins for treatment sessions was calculated according to the setup errors. We obtained a total of 245 sets of data collected from 49 breast cancer patients. Compared with Sentinel setup errors, the residual setup errors as determined by the CBCT scans after couch movement correction were reduced in the six directions. The PTV margins derived from the CBCT residual errors were all less than 5 mm in X, Y, and Z directions. Immediate breast reconstruction provides breast cancer patients with a valuable opportunity to restore breast shape. However, post-reconstruction breast asymmetry remains a common issue that affects patient satisfaction. This study aims to quantify breast asymmetry after surgery using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and assess its impact on both breast satisfaction and overall outcome satisfaction, offering scientific evidence to guide improvements in preoperative evaluation. We retrospectively collected MRI images and demographic characteristics from 98 patients who underwent unilateral immediate breast reconstruction. All patients underwent breast MRI scans post-reconstruction, and the MRI images were converted into 3D models using 3D Slicer software. The implant volumes were measured and compared with the actual implant volumes inserted during surgery to assess the accuracy of the MRI measurements. Breast symmetry after surgery was quantified using MRI-measured breast volumes, and patient satisfaction was analyzed through BREAST-Q questionnaires to explore the relationship between breast symmetry, post-reconstruction breast satisfaction, and overall outcome satisfaction. The implant volumes measured in the 3D reconstructed MRI images exhibited high concordance with the volumes recorded during surgery (r = 0.980, p < 0.001). Breast asymmetry values were significantly higher in the high BMI group compared to the low BMI group (P = 0.013), while the asymmetry ratio was significantly lower in the high weight group compared to the low weight group (P = 0.006). The asymmetry ratio showed a weak correlation with breast satisfaction (r = − 0.341, P = 0.002) and outcome satisfaction (r = − 0.371, P = 0.004). When grouped by low asymmetry (asymmetry > 10%), there was no significant difference in breast satisfaction (P = 0.054) or outcome satisfaction scores (P = 0.23) between the groups. However, in cases of high asymmetry (asymmetry ratio > 40%), breast satisfaction (P = 0.003) and outcome satisfaction scores (P = 0.005) were significantly lower in the asymmetry group compared to the symmetry group. Breast volume asymmetry after immediate breast reconstruction is associated with patient satisfaction, with a significant decrease in satisfaction when asymmetry exceeds 40%. The development of eco-friendly materials is a challenging one in the research field. Natural fibers are more accessible, biodegradable, inexpensive, and less dense. They offer fewer health risks and are eco-friendly compared to synthetic fibers. Natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites are new, eco-friendly materials with excellent mechanical and practical applications. Adding biofillers to composites improves strength and will replace synthetic materials. Utilizing cellulose as a filler for a natural starch matrix is an effective way to reduce the environmental impact of non-biodegradable materials. This study covers the influence of natural Borassus flabellifer flower microcrystalline cellulose (BFF MCC) fillers on banana fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic peaks at 2357, 1730, and 1245 cm-1 were absent. This indicates that the amorphous proportion of banana fiber mat/BFF MCC-reinforced hybrid composites decreased. At 1% BFF MCC, thermogravimetric examination revealed an increase in the peak temperature of maximum degradation (389.6 °C). The hybrid banana composite's tensile strength (31.36 ± 4.39 to 39.83 ± 3.07 MPa) and flexural strength (71.05 ± 2.66 to 82.4 ± 1.66 MPa) were also improved after adding 3% BFF MCC as filler material. The primary objective is to evaluate the suitability of fiber-reinforced hybrid polymers with natural fillers for future engineering applications such as automotive parts, construction materials, 3D printing, etc. In addition, this study investigated how the reinforcement of microcrystalline cellulose can result in a material with enhanced performance as well as its mechanical characteristics (XRD, FTIR, TGA, and SEM characterization). Self-healing hydrogels are emerging materials capable of restoring functionality after damage, making them highly suitable for biomedical applications, such as tissue engineering, wound healing, and drug delivery. In this study, we synthesize and characterize a novel biodegradable, conductive, and self-healing hydrogel. The synthesis is based on a Schiff base formed between gelatin and hyaluronic acid, and the dynamic reversible Schiff base bond provides the self-healing property. To characterize and assess the self-healing behavior of the hydrogel, dynamic speckle pattern (DSP) analysis is introduced as a non-destructive, non-contact, and easy-to-implement method. Speckle patterns are formed upon scattering of laser light from a diffusive matter and includes a huge overall information about the sample, to be extracted by statistical processing. DSP analysis is employed to monitor the self-healing process of the hydrogel at both macroscopic and microscopic scales. Experimental procedure involve in situ acquisition of speckle patterns over time under controlled environmental conditions, followed by statistical analysis to evaluate the internal dynamics of the healing process. Several statistical parameters are computed for real-time monitoring of the self-healing property of the hydrogel. The findings, on the one hand, underscore the potential of Schiff base hydrogels in advanced biomedical applications where self-healing properties are critical for sustained performance and longevity. Standard-of-care (SoC) imaging for assessing colorectal polyps during colonoscopy, based on white-light colonoscopy (WLC) and narrow-band imaging (NBI), does not have sufficient accuracy to assess the invasion depth of complex polyps non-invasively during colonoscopy. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility of a custom endoscopic optical coherence tomography (OCT) probe for assessing colorectal polyps during routine colonoscopy. Patients referred for endoscopic treatment of large colorectal polyps were enrolled in this pilot clinical study, which used a side-viewing OCT catheter developed for use with an adult colonoscope. OCT images of polyps were captured during colonoscopy immediately before SoC treatment. A deep learning model was trained to differentiate benign from deeply invasive lesions for real-time diagnosis. 35 polyps from 32 patients were included. OCT imaging added on average 3:40 min (range 1:54–8:20) to the total procedure time. No complications due to OCT were observed. OCT revealed distinct subsurface tissue structures that correlated with histological findings, including tubular adenoma (n = 20), tubulovillous adenoma (n = 10), sessile serrated polyps (n = 3), and invasive cancer (n = 2). The deep learning model achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.984 (95%CI 0.972–0.996) and Cohen's kappa of 0.845 (95%CI 0.774–0.915) when compared to gold standard histopathology. OCT is feasible and safe for polyp assessment during routine colonoscopy. When combined with deep learning, OCT offers clinicians increase confidence in identifying deeply invasive cancers, potentially improving clinical decision-making. Laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI) is a non-invasive, powerful, and cost-effective imaging technique that has seen widespread adoption across various medical fields, particularly for blood flow imaging. While LSCI provides physicians with valuable insights into changes or occlusions in blood flow, the technique is susceptible to various factors and parameters that can impact measurement sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). These include the scattering of light, which can affect the quality and reliability of the LSCI data. The polarization of light holds significant promise to enhance the performance of LSCI. In this study, we employed polarization manipulation of light to investigate its impact on the performance of LSCI for measuring flow. Focusing on the application of LSCI in microcirculation within capillaries, we examined the effect of polarization control on the technique's flow measurement capabilities using a custom-designed phantom system. This phantom consisted of three tubes with inner diameters of 1.1 mm, 1.6 mm, and 2.8 mm, embedded in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix with optical properties similar to biological tissue. By manipulating the polarization of both the incident and reflected light, alternating between parallel and perpendicular states, we compared the performance of our LSCI system in detecting flow for different tube diameters and depths within the phantom. Our study revealed that while depth is a critical parameter influencing flow detection using LSCI, employing perpendicular polarization (between incident and reflected light) resulted in the lowest measurement error and highest SNR compared to parallel polarization and the absence of polarization control. This study aimed to compare polishing systems on color stability, surface roughness, and gloss of additively manufactured permanent and conventional resin composites. Totally 250 disc specimens (6 mm*2 mm) were prepared from resin-based materials [G-ænial Posterior (GP), Clearfil Majesty Esthetic (CME), SonicFill-2 (SF), Tescera (Tes), and Crowntec (CT)]. Following baseline color (ΔE00), gloss (GU), and surface roughness (Ra) measurements, the specimens were randomly divided into 5 groups (n = 10/group) according to polishing systems: Control (mylar strips); OneGloss; OneGloss + Platina Hi-Gloss; OptiDisc; and OptiDisc + Platina Hi-Gloss. Specimens were immersed in coffee for 144 h following polishing. ΔE00, GU, and Ra measurements were repeated. Atomic force microscopy images were taken in all groups. Spearman's rho correlation coefficient, Robust ANOVA, and Bonferroni correction were used for statistical analysis. Significance level was taken as p < 0.050. Significant differences in ΔE00 values were found among resin-based materials, polishing systems, and their interactions (p < 0.001,p < 0.01, and p = 0.001). Regardless of polishing system, the lowest ΔE00 values were observed in CT, while lowest gloss (GU) values were found in Tes. The lowest surface roughness (Ra) values were detected at OptiDisc group (p < 0.001). A single type of polishing system may not be sufficient to achieve optimal results in resin-based materials. To evaluate the dosimetric benefits and clinical feasibility of deep inspiratory breath-hold (DIBH) combined with volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) in left-sided postmastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT). Eligible patients with left-sided breast cancer undergoing DIBH-based PMRT were prospectively included. Chest wall, supra/infraclavicular fossa, and/or internal mammary node irradiation (IMNI) were planned with a prescription dose of 43.5 Gy in 15 fractions. VMAT plans were designed on free breathing (FB)—and DIBH-CT to compare dosimetric parameters in heart, left anterior descending artery (LAD) and lung. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was performed before and after treatment to evaluate inter- and intra-fractional setup errors. Heart position and dose variations during treatment were estimated by fusing CBCT with DIBH-CT scans.Twenty patients were included with 10 receiving IMNI. In total, 193 pre-treatment and 39 pairs pre- and post-treatment CBCT scans were analyzed. The Dmean, Dmax, and V5−40 of the heart, LAD, and left lung were significantly lower in DIBH than FB (p < 0.05 for all), except for V5 of LAD (p = 0.167). The cardiopulmonary dosimetric benefits were maintained regardless of IMNI. The inter- and intra-fractional setup errors were < 0.3 cm; and the overall estimated PTV margins were < 1.0 cm. During treatment, the mean dice similarity coefficient of heart position and the mean ratio of heart Dmean between CBCT and DIBH-CT plans was 0.95 (0.88–1.00) and 100% (70.6–119.5%), respectively. DIBH-VMAT could effectively reduce the cardiopulmonary doses with acceptable reproducibility and stability in left-sided PMRT regardless of IMNI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The freeze–thaw cycles will lead to rock deterioration and pose a significant threat to engineering stability in cold regions. In this study, granite samples collected from the Luanshibao Landslide in the Eastern Tibetan Plateau were subjected to a maximum of 120 freeze–thaw cycles at two temperature paths (− 10–20 °C and − 20–20 °C). The Brazilian test, uniaxial and triaxial compression tests were carried out to evaluate the strength behavior of samples while the scanning electron microscopy tests to investigate microstructural changes. The correlation between strength be-havior and microstructural evolution of samples after freeze–thaw cycles was discussed. Results indicate that the uniaxial compressive strength, elastic modulus, tensile strength, and peak strength of samples decreased nonlinearly with freeze–thaw cycles. Besides, freeze–thaw cycles exhibit more pronounced effect on the strength of samples, compared to the temperature path. Based on the Mohr–Coulomb criterion, a joint strength expression was proposed for the tensile, compressive, and shear strengths of granite, which characterizes the influence of freeze–thaw cycles and strength paths on strength behavior of granite samples. SEM images revealed the freeze–thaw damage to the microstructure of granite and further the deterioration of the mechanical properties. The results of this study can provide a valuable reference for assessing the freeze–thaw strength of granite in the context of construction in highland areas, guiding the development of more resilient engineering practices and informing future research on the long-term durability of materials in extreme climates. Rayleigh waves are crucial in earthquake engineering due to their significant contribution to structural damage. This study aims to accurately synthesize Rayleigh wave fields in both uniform elastic half-spaces and horizontally layered elastic half-spaces. To achieve this, we developed a self-programmed FORTRAN program utilizing the thin layer stiffness matrix method. The accuracy of the synthesized wave fields was validated through numerical examples, demonstrating the program's reliability for both homogeneous and layered half-space scenarios. A comprehensive analysis of Rayleigh wave propagation characteristics was conducted, including elliptical particle motion, depth-dependent decay, and energy concentration near the surface. The computational efficiency of the self-programmed FORTRAN program was also verified. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of Rayleigh wave behavior and lays the foundation for further studies on soil-structure interaction under Rayleigh wave excitation, ultimately improving the safety and resilience of structures in seismic-prone regions. Three-dimensional correlative multimodal and multiscale imaging is an emerging method for investigating the complex hierarchical structure of biological materials such as bone. This approach synthesizes images acquired across multiple length scales, for the same region of interest, to provide a comprehensive view of the material structure of a sample. Here, we develop a workflow for the structural analysis of human trabecular bone using a femtosecond laser to produce a precise grid to facilitate correlation between imaging modalities and identification of structures of interest, in this case, a single trabecula within a volume of trabecular bone. Through such image registration, high resolution X-ray microscopy imaging revealed fine architectural details, including the cement sheath and bone cell lacunae of the selected bone trabecula. The selected bone volume was exposed with a combination of manual polishing and site-specific femtosecond laser ablation and then examined with plasma focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy. This reliable and versatile correlation approach has the potential to be applied to a variety of biological tissues and traditional engineered materials. The proposed workflow has the enhanced capability for generating highly resolved and broadly contextualized structural data for a better understanding of the architectural features of a material spanning its macroscopic to nanoscopic levels. Using ex vivo microscopy, virtual pathology can improve histological procedures by providing pathology images in near real-time without tissue destruction. Several emerging and promising approaches leverage fast-acting small-molecule fluorescent stains to replicate traditional pathology structural contrast, combined with rapid optical sectioning microscopes. However, several vital challenges must be addressed to translate virtual pathology into the clinical environment. One such challenge is selecting robust, reliable, and repeatable staining protocols that can be adopted across institutions. In this work, we addressed the effects of dye selection and staining protocol on image quality in rapid point-of-care imaging settings. For this purpose, we used structured illumination microscopy to evaluate fluorescent dyes currently used in the field of ex vivo virtual pathology, in particular, studying the effects of staining protocol and temporal and photostability on image quality. We observed that DRAQ5 and SYBR gold provide higher image quality than TO-PRO3 and RedDot1 in the nuclear channel and Eosin Y515 in the extracellular/cytoplasmic channel than Atto488. Further, we found that TO-PRO3 and Eosin Y515 are less photostable than other dyes. Finally, we identify the optimal staining protocol for each dye and demonstrate pan-species generalizability. Neutron reflectometry (NR) allows us to probe into the structure of the surfaces and interfaces of various materials such as soft matters and magnetic thin films with a contrast mechanism dependent on isotopic and magnetic states. The neutron beam flux is relatively low compared to that of other sources such as synchrotron radiation; therefore, there has been a strong limitation in the time-resolved measurement and further advanced experiments such as surface imaging. This study aims at the development of a methodology to enable the structural analysis by the NR data with a large statistical error acquired in a short measurement time. The neural network-based method predicts the true NR profile from the data with a 20-fold lower signal compared to that obtained under the conventional measurement condition. This indicates that the acquisition time in the NR measurement can be reduced by more than one order of magnitude. The current method will help achieve remarkable improvement in temporally and spatially resolved NR methods to gain further insight into the surface and interfaces of materials. Efficient, fast and new micro-analytical methods for characterization of ultrastructures of fungal spores with electron microscopy are very much required and essential. SEM analysis of biological materials, especially fungi, requires optimal preparation of the specimen and often requires the usage of dried samples which demands a challenging sample preparation. In the present investigation, we described a fast and improved method for the preparation of fungal specimen for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The fungus, Curvularia lunata was grown on the surface of sterile Whatman No.1 filter paper which was overlaid on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) medium, gold coated immediately after removal from the growth medium and subjected to imaging. Generally, SEM imaging is done with samples that were fixed with chemical fixatives, dehydrated and gold coated specimens, but here we describe an easy and more efficient sample preparation for SEM which enabled enhanced image quality and precision visualization of fungal cells, especially the spores. The developed method has enabled the analysis of even the robust samples like fungal spores that to eliminating special temperature requirement. The ultimate goal was to develop an improved protocol/method applied to analysis of fungal spores with greater coverage about fungal specimen preparation. This method permits the use of rapid sample preparation and will allow us to imaging of individual spore or conidia structures in the context of fungal cell architecture which clarifies our understanding in fungal taxonomy/biology. Measurement of auricle parameters for planning and post-operative evaluation presents substantial challenges due to the complex 3D structure of the human auricle. Traditional measurement methods rely on manual techniques, resulting in limited precision. This study introduces a novel automated surface-based three-dimensional measurement method for quantifying human auricle parameters. The method was applied to virtual auricles reconstructed from Computed Tomography (CT) scans of a cadaver head and subsequent measurement of important clinically relevant aesthetical auricular parameters (length, width, protrusion, position, auriculocephalic angle, and inclination angle). Reference measurements were done manually (using a caliper and using a 3D landmarking method) and measurement precision was compared to the automated method. The CT scans were performed using both a contemporary high-end and a low-end CT scanner. Scans were conducted at a standard scanning dose, and at half the dose. The automatic method demonstrated significantly higher precision in measuring auricle parameters compared to manual methods. Compared to traditional manual measurements, precision improved for auricle length (9×), width (5×), protrusion (5×), Auriculocephalic Angle (5–54×) and posteroanterior position (23×). Concerning parameters without comparison with a manual method, the precision level of supero-inferior position was 0.489 mm; and the precisions of the inclination angle measurements were 1.365 mm and 0.237 mm for the two automated methods investigated. Improved precision of measuring auricle parameters was associated with using the high-end scanner. A higher dose was only associated with a higher precision for the left auricle length. The findings of this study emphasize the advantage of automated surface-based auricle measurements, showcasing improved precision compared to traditional methods. This novel algorithm has the potential to enhance auricle reconstruction and other applications in plastic surgery, offering a promising avenue for future research and clinical application. The colloidal borescope, using colloidal particle motion, is used to monitor the flow velocities and directions of groundwater. It integrates advanced techniques such as microscopy, high-speed photography, and big data computing and enjoys high sensitivity at the micron level. However, In the same well, the groundwater flow velocity monitored by colloidal hole mirror is varies greatly from that obtained by conventional hydrogeological monitoring, such as pumping test. In order to solve this problem, the stability catcher and stratified packer are designed to control the interference of the vertical flow in drilling, and to monitor the flow velocity and direction of groundwater velocity at the target aquifer and target fracture. Five wells with different aquifers and different groundwater types were selected for monitoring in south-central China. The instantaneous velocity and direction are converted into east–west component and north–south component, the average velocity and direction is calculated according to the time of 10 min, and the particle trajectory diagram is established. Based on these results, it proposed a concept of cumulative flow velocity. Using curve-fitting equations, the limits of cumulative flow velocities as the monitoring time tends to infinity were then calculated as the actual flow velocities of the groundwater. The permeability coefficient of aquifer is calculated by using the fissure ratio of aquifer, hydraulic slope and flow velocity, and compared with the permeability coefficient obtained by pumping test. The results are as follows: (1) The variation coefficient of the instantaneous flow velocity measured at the same depth in the same well at different times is greater than that of the time average flow velocity and greater than that of the cumulative flow velocity. The variation coefficient of the actual velocity is the smallest, indicating that the risk of using the actual flow velocity is lower. (2) The variation coefficient of the flow rate monitored at different depths in the same well is mainly controlled by the properties of the aquifer. The more uniform water storage space in the aquifer, the smaller the variation coefficient. (3) The comparison between the permeability coefficient obtained by monitoring and the permeability coefficient obtained by pumping test shows that the flow of structural fissure water controlled by planar fissure is more surface flow, and the results are consistent. When the groundwater flow is controlled by pores and solution gaps, the flow channel is complicated, which is easy to produce turbulent flow, and the result consistency is poor. (4) According to different research accuracy requirements, different monitoring and calculation methods can be selected for different aquifers and groundwater types. Researches show that, the permeability coefficient calculated for the actual flow velocity in well DR01 is the same as that calculated for the pumping test. The aquifer characteristics reflected by the coefficient of variation of the actual flow velocity in the same aquifer are more realistic. The pumping test method obtains the comprehensive parameters of a certain aquifer, and this method can be used to monitor a certain fissure. In this paper, the new technology developed for monitoring, and the new algorithm established for data processing, can accurately obtain the flow velocity and direction of groundwater, using capsule hole mirror monitoring method. Forensic anthropologists dealing with personal identification (PI) of human remains have recently stressed the need to explore the potential of “secondary identifiers” for identifying victims who died in particular events for whom images often represent the main antemortem data available. Being the face the part most exposed in images, characteristics as pigmented skin lesions (PSLs), can be crucial if combined with other input. Since no data is available on frequencies and distribution of facial PSLs in the general population, this study aims at systematically collecting such data to verify their potential in PI and to open a debate on the aid that “secondary identifiers”, regardless of their specific nature, can give to the identification of the deceased in specific forensic contexts. A retrospective analysis on three-dimensional facial models of 1039 Italian subjects (from 4 to 84 years old) was conducted to examine the incidence of PSLs discriminated according to size and position in well-defined facial areas. From the collected data we developed a probabilistic approach providing the likelihood ratio (LR) for two settings: (1) the relative frequencies of nevi in the various facial areas, providing the deriving compound probability of owning a certain facial PSLs pattern; and (2) codes describing the facial nevi pattern of each individual of our population, thus testing their uniqueness and so their potential in PI. The calculated LRs mostly proved high identifying strength, particularly when provided by the compound probability-based approach. Data on incidence and position of facial nevi, their generated codes, and the probabilistic approach here presented, all constitute a starting point for advancing secondary identifiers. Nonetheless, although this preliminary study proved facial PSLs as valuable and potentially useful for identification, their significance and validity should be interpreted with caution as we are still at the first theoretical step clearly based on ideal conditions, and thus further investigations are due on the limitations of their use in practical identifying settings. Therefore, being this systematic study only a preliminary one in its nature, it is recommended not to use this kind of approach until further studies will test its validity in several practical conditions. Agricultural residues such as rice straw (RS) are desirable raw materials for biogas generation. However, the recalcitrant nature of RS hinders biogas production, and its low bulk density increases storage space requirements, transportation needs, and overall costs. These challenges could be resolved by pretreatment and pelletization. In this study, various thermal pretreatments were performed, and the best conditions (temperature and time) were identified. Also, rice straw and cow dung pellets (RCP) at different food-to-microorganism (F/M) ratios (0.5–2.5) were prepared. Parameters such as bulk density, moisture absorption, and drop shatter tests were conducted to evaluate the physical properties. Finally, the biochemical methane potential (BMP) study of the best RCP with varying total solids (TS: 4–12%) content was investigated. The results indicate that hot air oven pretreatment (for 60 min at 120 °C) resulted in maximum solubilization. In physical characteristics, RCP with an F/M ratio of 2.5 pellets was ideal. The bulk density of RCP 2.5 was found to be around 25 times that of the raw. Also, the TS 8% yielded maximum biomethane (279 mL/g-VSconsumed) as compared to other TS contents. This study investigates the impact of high-pressure hydrogen gas exposure on the structural and morphological characteristics of O-ring materials. O-ring specimens undergo two cycles of sealing under 70 MPa hydrogen gas, and their resulting variations are examined using advanced characterization techniques, including powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Our findings reveal that the lattice parameters of the O-ring material show no significant changes when exposed to 70 MPa hydrogen gas. However, in the micrometre range, the formation of a hierarchical channel morphology becomes evident. This morphology is accompanied by the separation of carbon black filler from the rubber matrix, contributing to mechanical weakening of the O-ring. These observations can be attributed to the pressure gradient that develops between the inner and outer radii of the O-ring, resulting from compression forces acting perpendicularly to the radial direction due to clamp locking. Deposition of high entropy alloy FeCoNiMnCu on SS-304 was carried out by microwave energy for application in "solid oxide fuel-cell (SOFC) interconnects". The ball-milling has been performed by taking "Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, and Cu" in equal 20 wt. % of before deposited on SS-304 substrate. The deposited steel with 20% Fe 20% Co 20% Ni 20% Mn 20% Cu high entropy alloy (HEA) was exposed to thermal-exposure in the air for up to 10 weeks at 800 °C. The uniform cladding distribution of 20% Fe 20% Co 20% Ni 20% Mn 20% Cu HEA particles can be apparently observed on SS-304 substrate by utilizing Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and Optical microscopy analysis. Homogeneity in the interfacial layer was evident by employing Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) characterization. Results have indicated that after the thermal exposure of deposited steel with 20% Fe 20% Co 20% Ni 20% Mn 20% Cu in the air for up to ten weeks at 800 °C, a "protective Cr2O3 layer", and "high-entropy spinel coating" of (Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Cu)3O4 have been formed. During microwave cladding, the emergence of harder-phases has contributed to the raised hardness. The wear behavior after coating of 20% Fe 20% Co 20% Ni 20% Mn 20% Cu HEA on SS-304 substrate has significantly enhanced due to the strengthened wear resistance and hardness of the coatings. Findings have exhibited that the formation of (Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Cu)3O4 phase is a potential coating material for "SOFC interconnects" applications. Moreover, the cladding of SS304 with a composition of 20% Fe, 20% Co, 20% Ni, 20% Mn, and 20% Cu has demonstrated remarkable stability under thermal expansion studies. As the findings have revealed that the composite cladding has efficiently withstand significant variations in volume when subjected to elevated temperatures for a prolonged period of time, thus, exhibiting its superior thermal stability for SOFC-interconnect applications. Furthermore, the SEM images of the cladding surface, surface hardness, and tribocorrosion behavior of the coated material have been observed to identify the 20% Fe 20% Co 20% Ni 20% Mn 20% Cu HEA coating effect on SS-304 steel-substrate. The present investigation has employed recycled waste glass powder (WGP) and silicon nitride (Si3N4) as reinforcing-agents within AZ91D-matrix composites. The composites were fabricated by employing the vacuum stir casting technique to mitigate the effects of oxidation and to ensure homogeneity, uniformity, and superior wettability among the AZ91D-matrix and reinforcements. A microscopic study provided confirmation of a uniform dispersion of WGP and Si3N4 particles throughout the AZ91D-matrix. The tensile strength of the AZ91D/WGP/Si3N4 composites rise with the inclusion of WGP particulates by up to 1.5 percent in AZ91D/7.5% Si3N4. However, the tensile strength of the AZ91D/9%Si3N4 composite have showed maximum value as compared to other chosen formulations/combinations in the current investigation. The tensile strength of AZ91D/1.5% WGP/7.5% Si3N4 composites has strengthened up to 12.13 percent with the comparison of base alloy AZ91D-matrix. In A1 formulated composite, the amount of WGP particulate has enhanced the hardness of the AZ91D-alloy by up to 1.5 percent. Findings, nevertheless has exhibited that the A6 formulated composite had superior outcomes in terms of hardness. The incorporation of “reinforcing-constituent particulates” with 1.5%WGP + 7.5%Si3N4 combination within the AZ91D-matrix, has further increased fatigue-strength by around 57.84 percent. A weight-loss of 0.312 mg was being unveiled for the A1 formulated fabricated composite. The weight-loss for the A6 formulated fabricated composite, however, was reported to be 0.294 mg. Furthermore, the utilisation of X-ray diffraction analysis effectively determined the existence of hard phases inside the AZ91D-matrix, which significantly contributed to the reported enhancement in wear resistance. The development of harder-phases has included, α-Mg, Al12Mg17, SiO2, Si3N4, MgO, and CaO phases within the composite has been accountable for the enhancement of the tribomechanical, and wear-resistance characteristics of the AZ91D/WGP/Si3N4 composites. This interdisciplinary study examined the relationship between bone density and drilling forces required during trans-pedicular access to the vertebra using fresh–frozen thoraco-lumbar vertebrae from two female body donors (A, B). Before and after biomechanical examination, samples underwent high-resolution CT-quantification of total bone density followed by software-based evaluation and processing. CT density measurements (n = 4818) were calculated as gray values (GV), which were highest in T12 for both subjects (GVmaxA = 3483.24, GVmaxB = 3160.33). Trans-pedicular drilling forces F (Newton N) were highest in L3 (FmaxB = 5.67 N) and L4 (FmaxA = 5.65 N). In 12 out of 13 specimens, GVs significantly (p < 0.001) correlated with force measurements. Among these, Spearman correlations r were poor in two lumbar vertebrae, fair in five specimens, and moderately strong in another five specimens, and highest for T11 (rA = 0.721) and L5 (rB = 0.690). Our results indicate that CT-based analysis of vertebral bone density acquired in anatomical specimens is a promising approach to predict the drilling force appearance as surrogate parameter of its biomechanical properties by e.g., linear regression analysis. The study may be of value as basis for biomechanical investigations to improve planning of the optimal trajectory and to define safety margins for drilling forces during robotic-assisted trans-pedicular interventions on the spine in the future. The biggest obstacle to optical imaging is light attenuation in biological tissues. Conventional clearing techniques, such as agent-based clearing, improve light penetration depth by reducing scattering, but they are hampered by drawbacks including toxicity, low efficiency, slowness, and superficial performance, which prevent them from resolving the attenuation problem on their own. Therefore, quick, safe, and effective procedures have been developed. One of them involves using standing ultrasonic waves to build light waveguides that function effectively in the tissue depth while minimizing scattering. Temporal optical clearing is another agent-free strategy that we introduced in our previous article. Whereas not deep, this technique minimizes both light absorption and scattering by pulse width variation in ultra-short pulse regime. Consequently, it can be a complementary method for ultrasonic optical clearing. In this work, we enhanced the light penetration depth in chicken breast tissue by 10 times (0.67–6.7 cm), setting a record in literature by integrating three clearing methods: agent-based, ultrasound-based, and temporal. Here, optical coherence tomography, Bear–Lambert, and fluorescence tests have been used to study the light penetration depth and optical clearing efficiency. We present the first data-driven pediatric model that explains cranial sutural growth in the pediatric population. We segmented the cranial bones in the neurocranium from the cross-sectional CT images of 2068 normative subjects (age 0–10 years), and we used a 2D manifold-based cranial representation to establish local anatomical correspondences between subjects guided by the location of the cranial sutures. We designed a diffeomorphic spatiotemporal model of cranial bone development as a function of local sutural growth rates, and we inferred its parameters statistically from our cross-sectional dataset. We used the constructed model to predict growth for 51 independent normative patients who had longitudinal images. Moreover, we used our model to simulate the phenotypes of single suture craniosynostosis, which we compared to the observations from 212 patients. We also evaluated the accuracy predicting personalized cranial growth for 10 patients with craniosynostosis who had pre-surgical longitudinal images. Unlike existing statistical and simulation methods, our model was inferred from real image observations, explains cranial bone expansion and displacement as a consequence of sutural growth and it can simulate craniosynostosis. The goal of the study was to evaluate the inter- and intrafractional patient setup accuracy of target volumes located in the head, thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic regions when using SGRT, by comparing it with that of laser alignment using patient skin marks, and to calculate the corresponding setup margins. A total of 2303 radiotherapy fractions of 183 patients were analyzed. All patients received daily kilovoltage cone-beam computed tomography scans (kV-CBCT) for online verification. From November 2019 until September 2020, patient setup was performed using laser alignment with patient skin marks, and since October 2020, using SGRT. The setup accuracy was measured by the six degrees of freedom (6DOF) corrections based on the kV-CBCT. The corresponding setup margins were calculated using the van Herk formula. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to evaluate the impact of multiple factors on the setup accuracy. The inter-fractional patient setup accuracy was significantly better using SGRT compared to laser alignment with skin marks. The mean three-dimensional vector of the translational setup deviation of tumors located in the thorax, abdomen, and pelvis using SGRT was 3.6 mm (95% confidence interval (CI) 3.3 mm to 3.9 mm) and 4.5 mm using laser alignment with skin marks (95% CI 3.9 mm to 5.2 mm; p = 0.001). Calculation of setup margins for the combined inter- and intra-fractional setup error revealed similar setup margins using SGRT and kV-CBCT once a week compared to laser alignment with skin marks and kV-CBCT every other day. Furthermore, comparable setup margins were found for open-face thermoplastic masks with AlignRT compared to closed-face thermoplastic masks with laser alignment and mask marks. SGRT opens the possibility to reduce the number of CBCTs while maintaining sufficient setup accuracy. The advantage is a reduction of imaging dose and overall treatment time. In this study, to develop soft pressure sensor applicable to wearable robots using stretchable polymers and conductive fillers, 3.25 wt% carbon nanotubes/thermoplastic polyurethane filament with shore 94 A were manufactured. Three infill densities (20%, 50%, and 80%) and patterns (zigzag (ZG), triangle (TR), honeycomb (HN)) were applied to print cubes via fused filament fabrication 3D printing. Most suitable infill conditions were confirmed based on the slicing images, morphologies, compressive properties, electrical properties, and electrical heating properties. For each infill pattern, ZG and TR divided the layers into lines and figures, and the layers were stacked by rotation. For HN, the same layers were stacked in a hexagonal pattern. Consequently, TR divided layer in various directions, showed the strongest compressive properties with toughness 1.99 J for of infill density 80%. Especially, the HN became tougher with increased infill density. Also, the HN laminated with the same layer showed excellent electrical properties, with results greater than 14.7 mA. The electrical heating properties confirmed that ZG and HN had the high layer density, which exhibited excellent heating characteristics. Therefore, it was confirmed that performance varies depending on the 3D printing direction, and it was confirmed that HN is suitable for manufacturing soft sensors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Temperature is an essential oceanographic variable (EOV) that still today remains coarsely resolved below the surface and near the seafloor. Here, we gather evidence to confirm that Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology can convert tens of kilometer-long seafloor fiber-optic telecommunication cables into dense arrays of temperature anomaly sensors having millikelvin (mK) sensitivity, thus allowing to monitor oceanic processes such as internal waves and upwelling with unprecedented detail. Notably, we report high-resolution observations of highly coherent near-inertial and super-inertial internal waves in the NW Mediterranean sea, offshore of Toulon, France, having spatial extents of a few kilometers and producing maximum thermal anomalies of more than 5 K at maximum absolute rates of more than 1 K/h. We validate our observations with in-situ oceanographic sensors and an alternative optical fiber sensing technology. Currently, DAS only provides temperature changes estimates, however practical solutions are outlined to obtain continuous absolute temperature measurements with DAS at the seafloor. Our observations grant key advantages to DAS over established temperature sensors, showing its transformative potential for the description of seafloor temperature fluctuations over an extended range of spatial and temporal scales, as well as for the understanding of the evolution of the ocean in a broad sense (e.g. physical and ecological). This study conducted an evaluation of the corrosion behavior of an aluminum alloy utilized in the Isfahan Miniature Neutron Source Reactor (MNSR). The component analyzed, dry channel (DC), had been exposed to radiation for 12 years in a water environment within the reactor pool since its installation. To determine the effect of radiation on the corrosion of the LT-21 aluminum alloy used in the DC, different parts of the pipe were sampled and various tests were performed. These tests included mechanical strengths (impact, and micro-hardening), XRD, TEM, SEM–EDS, and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP). The parameters measured included corrosion potential, corrosion rate, changes in microscopic structure, and mechanical properties of the aluminum alloy along the entire length of the DC. The neutron and gamma dose distribution along the height of the DC, which was 540 cm, was calculated to determine the correlation between the dose distribution and observed corrosion. The study found that the corrosion mechanisms were complex and resulted from the simultaneous presence of the DC in the pool water and radiation from the reactor core. Multiple methods have been proposed for evaluating the symmetry of facial contour by utilizing the median sagittal plane of the skull as a reference and measuring the maxillofacial region. To replace the manual mark point analysis method, we used the anterior cerebral falx plane in MRI images as an indicator of the craniofacial midline. The MRI examination data of 30 individuals were analyzed with a MeVisLab workstation. Two independent examiners performed 15 anthropometric measurements (4 angular, 11 linear) and compared the MRI-based anterior cerebral falx plane with the manual mark point analysis of the craniofacial midline estimation. All measurements were repeated after 3 weeks. Statistical analyses included the repeatability and reproducibility of the 2 methods based on intra-observer and inter-observer correlation coefficients (ICCs), respectively. Precision was estimated by intergroup comparison of the coefficient of variation. The anterior falx plane derived from the MRI data resulted in an intra-observer ICC of 0.869 ± 0.065 (range 0.733–0.936) and inter-observer ICC of 0.876 ± 0.0417 (0.798–0.932) for all measurements, showing significant correlations with the ICC values obtained by the mark point method (p < 0.05). The coefficient of variation showed that the precisions of the 2 methods were statistically comparable. We conclude that, for MRI-based craniofacial midline estimation, measurements made using the anterior cerebral falx plane are as precise, repeatable, and reproducible as those using the manual mark point analysis method. Mandibular retrognathia (C2Rm) is one of the most common oral pathologies. Acquiring a better understanding of the points of impact of C2Rm on the entire skull is of major interest in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of this dysmorphism, but also permits us to contribute to the debate on the changes undergone by the shape of the skull during human evolution. However, conventional methods have some limits in meeting these challenges, insofar as they require defining in advance the structures to be studied, and identifying them using landmarks. In this context, our work aims to answer these questions using AI tools and, in particular, machine learning, with the objective of relaying these treatments automatically. We propose an innovative methodology coupling convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and interpretability algorithms. Applied to a set of radiographs classified into physiological versus pathological categories, our methodology made it possible to: discuss the structures impacted by retrognathia and already identified in literature; identify new structures of potential interest in medical terms; highlight the dynamic evolution of impacted structures according to the level of gravity of C2Rm; provide for insights into the evolution of human anatomy. Results were discussed in terms of the major interest of this approach in the field of orthodontics and, more generally, in the field of automated processing of medical images. The color and texture characteristics of crops can reflect their nitrogen (N) nutrient status and help optimize N fertilizer management. This study conducted a one-year field experiment to collect sugarcane leaf images at tillering and elongation stages using a commercial digital camera and extract leaf image color feature (CF) and texture feature (TF) parameters using digital image processing techniques. By analyzing the correlation between leaf N content and feature parameters, feature dimensionality reduction was performed using principal component analysis (PCA), and three regression methods (multiple linear regression; MLR, random forest regression; RF, stacking fusion model; SFM) were used to construct N content estimation models based on different image feature parameters. All models were built using five-fold cross-validation and grid search to verify the model performance and stability. The results showed that the models based on color-texture integrated principal component features (C-T-PCA) outperformed the single-feature models based on CF or TF. Among them, SFM had the highest accuracy for the validation dataset with the model coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.9264 for the tillering stage and 0.9111 for the elongation stage, with the maximum improvement of 9.85% and 8.91%, respectively, compared with the other tested models. In conclusion, the SFM framework based on C-T-PCA combines the advantages of multiple models to enhance the model performance while enhancing the anti-interference and generalization capabilities. A new super-resolution method, entitled Near-field Projection Optical Microscopy (NPOM), is presented. This novel technique enables the imaging of nanoscale objects without the need for surface scanning, as is usually required in existing methods such as NSOM (near-field scanning optical microscope). The main advantage of the proposed concept, besides the elimination of the need for a mechanical scanning mechanism, is that the full field of regard/view is imaged simultaneously and not point-by-point as in scanning-based techniques. Furthermore, by using compressed sensing, the number of projected patterns needed to decompose the spatial information of the inspected object can be made smaller than the obtainable points of spatial resolution. In addition to the development of mathematical formalism, this paper presents the results of a series of complementary numerical tests, using various objects and patterns, that were performed to verify the accuracy of the reconstruction capabilities. Waste gas products from technological civilizations may accumulate in an exoplanet atmosphere to detectable levels. We propose nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as ideal technosignature gases. Earth life avoids producing or using any N–F or S–F bond-containing molecules and makes no fully fluorinated molecules with any element. NF3 and SF6 may be universal technosignatures owing to their special industrial properties, which unlike biosignature gases, are not species-dependent. Other key relevant qualities of NF3 and SF6 are: their extremely low water solubility, unique spectral features, and long atmospheric lifetimes. NF3 has no non-human sources and was absent from Earth's pre-industrial atmosphere. SF6 is released in only tiny amounts from fluorine-containing minerals, and is likely produced in only trivial amounts by volcanic eruptions. We propose a strategy to rule out SF6's abiotic source by simultaneous observations of SiF4, which is released by volcanoes in an order of magnitude higher abundance than SF6. Other fully fluorinated human-made molecules are of interest, but their chemical and spectral properties are unavailable. We summarize why life on Earth—and perhaps life elsewhere—avoids using F. Polyphenolics have been predicted to effectively develop antimicrobial agents for the food industry as food additives and promote human health. This study aims to synthesize pomegranate peel extract (PPE) with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) against eight foodborne pathogens. Multispectroscopic analysis of UV–vis spectroscopy, Zeta potential, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis were used to characterize the interaction between PPE and AgNPs. Eight foodborne pathogenic strains (six bacterial and two fungal strains) Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Escherichia coli ATCC 8379, Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 00607, Salmonella typhi DSM 17058, Shigella sonnei DSM 5570, Aspergillus flavus ATCC 9643, and Rhizopus oryzae ATCC 96382 were used to test the inhibitory potential of PPW-AgNPs. The reaction colour of PPE-AgNPs from yellow to brown indicated that the nanoparticles were successfully formed. The UV absorption of PPE-AgNPs was detected at 440 nm of 0.9 SPR. SEM image of PPE-AgNPs exhibited spherical shapes with a zeta potential of − 20.1 mV. PPE-AgNPs showed high antimicrobial activity against all tested strains. The highest inhibition activity of PPE-AgNPs was recorded for the B. subtilis strain followed by K. pneumonia, while the highest resistance was noticed for R. oryzae. The components of pomegranate peel were analyzed using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The major constituents of pomegranate peel is phenol (51.1%), followed by Isocitronellol (19.41%) and 1-Propanol, 2-(2-hydroxypropyl)- (16.05%). Mandibular retrognathia (C2Rm) is one of the most common oral pathologies. Acquiring a better understanding of the points of impact of C2Rm on the entire skull is of major interest in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of this dysmorphism, but also permits us to contribute to the debate on the changes undergone by the shape of the skull during human evolution. However, conventional methods have some limits in meeting these challenges, insofar as they require defining in advance the structures to be studied, and identifying them using landmarks. In this context, our work aims to answer these questions using AI tools and, in particular, machine learning, with the objective of relaying these treatments automatically. We propose an innovative methodology coupling convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and interpretability algorithms. Applied to a set of radiographs classified into physiological versus pathological categories, our methodology made it possible to: discuss the structures impacted by retrognathia and already identified in literature; identify new structures of potential interest in medical terms; highlight the dynamic evolution of impacted structures according to the level of gravity of C2Rm; provide for insights into the evolution of human anatomy. Results were discussed in terms of the major interest of this approach in the field of orthodontics and, more generally, in the field of automated processing of medical images. In this study, to develop soft pressure sensor applicable to wearable robots using stretchable polymers and conductive fillers, 3.25 wt% carbon nanotubes/thermoplastic polyurethane filament with shore 94 A were manufactured. Three infill densities (20%, 50%, and 80%) and patterns (zigzag (ZG), triangle (TR), honeycomb (HN)) were applied to print cubes via fused filament fabrication 3D printing. Most suitable infill conditions were confirmed based on the slicing images, morphologies, compressive properties, electrical properties, and electrical heating properties. For each infill pattern, ZG and TR divided the layers into lines and figures, and the layers were stacked by rotation. For HN, the same layers were stacked in a hexagonal pattern. Consequently, TR divided layer in various directions, showed the strongest compressive properties with toughness 1.99 J for of infill density 80%. Especially, the HN became tougher with increased infill density. Also, the HN laminated with the same layer showed excellent electrical properties, with results greater than 14.7 mA. The electrical heating properties confirmed that ZG and HN had the high layer density, which exhibited excellent heating characteristics. Therefore, it was confirmed that performance varies depending on the 3D printing direction, and it was confirmed that HN is suitable for manufacturing soft sensors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Temperature is an essential oceanographic variable (EOV) that still today remains coarsely resolved below the surface and near the seafloor. Here, we gather evidence to confirm that Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology can convert tens of kilometer-long seafloor fiber-optic telecommunication cables into dense arrays of temperature anomaly sensors having millikelvin (mK) sensitivity, thus allowing to monitor oceanic processes such as internal waves and upwelling with unprecedented detail. Notably, we report high-resolution observations of highly coherent near-inertial and super-inertial internal waves in the NW Mediterranean sea, offshore of Toulon, France, having spatial extents of a few kilometers and producing maximum thermal anomalies of more than 5 K at maximum absolute rates of more than 1 K/h. We validate our observations with in-situ oceanographic sensors and an alternative optical fiber sensing technology. Currently, DAS only provides temperature changes estimates, however practical solutions are outlined to obtain continuous absolute temperature measurements with DAS at the seafloor. Our observations grant key advantages to DAS over established temperature sensors, showing its transformative potential for the description of seafloor temperature fluctuations over an extended range of spatial and temporal scales, as well as for the understanding of the evolution of the ocean in a broad sense (e.g. physical and ecological). The goal of the study was to evaluate the inter- and intrafractional patient setup accuracy of target volumes located in the head, thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic regions when using SGRT, by comparing it with that of laser alignment using patient skin marks, and to calculate the corresponding setup margins. A total of 2303 radiotherapy fractions of 183 patients were analyzed. All patients received daily kilovoltage cone-beam computed tomography scans (kV-CBCT) for online verification. From November 2019 until September 2020, patient setup was performed using laser alignment with patient skin marks, and since October 2020, using SGRT. The setup accuracy was measured by the six degrees of freedom (6DOF) corrections based on the kV-CBCT. The corresponding setup margins were calculated using the van Herk formula. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to evaluate the impact of multiple factors on the setup accuracy. The inter-fractional patient setup accuracy was significantly better using SGRT compared to laser alignment with skin marks. The mean three-dimensional vector of the translational setup deviation of tumors located in the thorax, abdomen, and pelvis using SGRT was 3.6 mm (95% confidence interval (CI) 3.3 mm to 3.9 mm) and 4.5 mm using laser alignment with skin marks (95% CI 3.9 mm to 5.2 mm; p = 0.001). Calculation of setup margins for the combined inter- and intra-fractional setup error revealed similar setup margins using SGRT and kV-CBCT once a week compared to laser alignment with skin marks and kV-CBCT every other day. Furthermore, comparable setup margins were found for open-face thermoplastic masks with AlignRT compared to closed-face thermoplastic masks with laser alignment and mask marks. SGRT opens the possibility to reduce the number of CBCTs while maintaining sufficient setup accuracy. The advantage is a reduction of imaging dose and overall treatment time. This study conducted an evaluation of the corrosion behavior of an aluminum alloy utilized in the Isfahan Miniature Neutron Source Reactor (MNSR). The component analyzed, dry channel (DC), had been exposed to radiation for 12 years in a water environment within the reactor pool since its installation. To determine the effect of radiation on the corrosion of the LT-21 aluminum alloy used in the DC, different parts of the pipe were sampled and various tests were performed. These tests included mechanical strengths (impact, and micro-hardening), XRD, TEM, SEM–EDS, and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP). The parameters measured included corrosion potential, corrosion rate, changes in microscopic structure, and mechanical properties of the aluminum alloy along the entire length of the DC. The neutron and gamma dose distribution along the height of the DC, which was 540 cm, was calculated to determine the correlation between the dose distribution and observed corrosion. The study found that the corrosion mechanisms were complex and resulted from the simultaneous presence of the DC in the pool water and radiation from the reactor core. Multiple methods have been proposed for evaluating the symmetry of facial contour by utilizing the median sagittal plane of the skull as a reference and measuring the maxillofacial region. To replace the manual mark point analysis method, we used the anterior cerebral falx plane in MRI images as an indicator of the craniofacial midline. The MRI examination data of 30 individuals were analyzed with a MeVisLab workstation. Two independent examiners performed 15 anthropometric measurements (4 angular, 11 linear) and compared the MRI-based anterior cerebral falx plane with the manual mark point analysis of the craniofacial midline estimation. All measurements were repeated after 3 weeks. Statistical analyses included the repeatability and reproducibility of the 2 methods based on intra-observer and inter-observer correlation coefficients (ICCs), respectively. Precision was estimated by intergroup comparison of the coefficient of variation. The anterior falx plane derived from the MRI data resulted in an intra-observer ICC of 0.869 ± 0.065 (range 0.733–0.936) and inter-observer ICC of 0.876 ± 0.0417 (0.798–0.932) for all measurements, showing significant correlations with the ICC values obtained by the mark point method (p < 0.05). The coefficient of variation showed that the precisions of the 2 methods were statistically comparable. We conclude that, for MRI-based craniofacial midline estimation, measurements made using the anterior cerebral falx plane are as precise, repeatable, and reproducible as those using the manual mark point analysis method. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive brain disorder characterized by the ongoing decline of brain functions. Studies have revealed the detrimental effects of hyperphosphorylated tau (p-tau) protein fibrils in AD pathogenesis, highlighting the importance of this factor in the early-stage detection of AD conditions. We designed an electrochemical immunosensor for quantitative detection of the cis conformation of the p-tau protein (cis-p-tau) employing platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) supported on zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF) for modifying the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface. Under optimum conditions, the immunosensor selectively and sensitively detected cis-p-tau within the broad linear range of 1 fg mL−1 to 10 ng mL−1 and the low limit of detection (LOD) of 1 fg mL−1 with desired reproducibility and stability. Furthermore, the fabricated immunosensor's performance was examined for the cis-p-tau analysis in the serum of AD patients, indicating its accuracy and feasibility for real-sample analysis. Notably, this is the first application of Pt@ZIF-8 nanocomposite in fabricating a valid immunosensor for selective cis-p-tau detection, even in the presence of trans-p-tau. It is worth mentioning that the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) reference technique is not able to evaluate pico- or femtomolar concentrations of cis-p-tau, making the fabricated immunosensor superior for early-stage measurement and screening of AD. A new super-resolution method, entitled Near-field Projection Optical Microscopy (NPOM), is presented. This novel technique enables the imaging of nanoscale objects without the need for surface scanning, as is usually required in existing methods such as NSOM (near-field scanning optical microscope). The main advantage of the proposed concept, besides the elimination of the need for a mechanical scanning mechanism, is that the full field of regard/view is imaged simultaneously and not point-by-point as in scanning-based techniques. Furthermore, by using compressed sensing, the number of projected patterns needed to decompose the spatial information of the inspected object can be made smaller than the obtainable points of spatial resolution. In addition to the development of mathematical formalism, this paper presents the results of a series of complementary numerical tests, using various objects and patterns, that were performed to verify the accuracy of the reconstruction capabilities. The color and texture characteristics of crops can reflect their nitrogen (N) nutrient status and help optimize N fertilizer management. This study conducted a one-year field experiment to collect sugarcane leaf images at tillering and elongation stages using a commercial digital camera and extract leaf image color feature (CF) and texture feature (TF) parameters using digital image processing techniques. By analyzing the correlation between leaf N content and feature parameters, feature dimensionality reduction was performed using principal component analysis (PCA), and three regression methods (multiple linear regression; MLR, random forest regression; RF, stacking fusion model; SFM) were used to construct N content estimation models based on different image feature parameters. All models were built using five-fold cross-validation and grid search to verify the model performance and stability. The results showed that the models based on color-texture integrated principal component features (C-T-PCA) outperformed the single-feature models based on CF or TF. Among them, SFM had the highest accuracy for the validation dataset with the model coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.9264 for the tillering stage and 0.9111 for the elongation stage, with the maximum improvement of 9.85% and 8.91%, respectively, compared with the other tested models. In conclusion, the SFM framework based on C-T-PCA combines the advantages of multiple models to enhance the model performance while enhancing the anti-interference and generalization capabilities. Here, we report on the development and application of a compact multi-core fiber optical probe for multimodal non-linear imaging, combining the label-free modalities of Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering, Second Harmonic Generation, and Two-Photon Excited Fluorescence. Probes of this multi-core fiber design avoid moving and voltage-carrying parts at the distal end, thus providing promising improved compatibility with clinical requirements over competing implementations. The performance characteristics of the probe are established using thin cryo-sections and artificial targets before the applicability to clinically relevant samples is evaluated using ex vivo bulk human and porcine intestine tissues. After image reconstruction to counteract the data's inherently pixelated nature, the recorded images show high image quality and morpho-chemical conformity on the tissue level compared to multimodal non-linear images obtained with a laser-scanning microscope using a standard microscope objective. Furthermore, a simple yet effective reconstruction procedure is presented and demonstrated to yield satisfactory results. Finally, a clear pathway for further developments to facilitate a translation of the multimodal fiber probe into real-world clinical evaluation and application is outlined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Waste gas products from technological civilizations may accumulate in an exoplanet atmosphere to detectable levels. We propose nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as ideal technosignature gases. Earth life avoids producing or using any N–F or S–F bond-containing molecules and makes no fully fluorinated molecules with any element. NF3 and SF6 may be universal technosignatures owing to their special industrial properties, which unlike biosignature gases, are not species-dependent. Other key relevant qualities of NF3 and SF6 are: their extremely low water solubility, unique spectral features, and long atmospheric lifetimes. NF3 has no non-human sources and was absent from Earth's pre-industrial atmosphere. SF6 is released in only tiny amounts from fluorine-containing minerals, and is likely produced in only trivial amounts by volcanic eruptions. We propose a strategy to rule out SF6's abiotic source by simultaneous observations of SiF4, which is released by volcanoes in an order of magnitude higher abundance than SF6. Other fully fluorinated human-made molecules are of interest, but their chemical and spectral properties are unavailable. We summarize why life on Earth—and perhaps life elsewhere—avoids using F. Many drugs were recommended as antiviral agents for infection control and effective therapy to reduce the mortality rate for COVID-19 patients. Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), an antimalarial drug, has been controversially recommended for prophylactic use in many countries, including India, to control SARS-CoV-2 infections. We have explored the effect of prophylactic HCQ from the cells of bronchoalveolar lavage fluids from COVID-19-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome patients to determine the level of infection and ultrastructural alterations in the ciliated epithelium, type II pneumocytes, alveolar macrophages, neutrophils, and enucleated granulocytes. Ultrastructural investigation of ciliated epithelium and type II pneumocytes showed lesser infections and cellular impairment in the prophylactic HCQ+ group than HCQ− group. However, macrophages and neutrophils displayed similar infection and ultrastructural alterations in both patient groups. The enucleated fragments of granulocytes showed phagocytosis of the matured virus in HCQ+ groups. The present report unveils the ultrastructural proof to complement the paradox regarding the role of prophylactic HCQ in COVID-19 patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Transport of interstitial fluid and solutes plays a critical role in clearing metabolic waste from the brain. Transcranial application of focused ultrasound (FUS) has been shown to promote localized cerebrospinal fluid solute uptake into the brain parenchyma; however, its effects on the transport and clearance of interstitial solutes remain unknown. We demonstrate that pulsed application of low-intensity FUS to the rat brain enhances the transport of intracortically injected fluorescent tracers (ovalbumin and high molecular-weight dextran), yielding greater parenchymal tracer volume distribution compared to the unsonicated control group (ovalbumin by 40.1% and dextran by 34.6%). Furthermore, FUS promoted the drainage of injected interstitial ovalbumin to both superficial and deep cervical lymph nodes (cLNs) ipsilateral to sonication, with 78.3% higher drainage observed in the superficial cLNs compared to the non-sonicated hemisphere. The application of FUS increased the level of solute transport visible from the dorsal brain surface, with ~ 43% greater area and ~ 19% higher fluorescence intensity than the unsonicated group, especially in the pial surface ipsilateral to sonication. The sonication did not elicit tissue-level neuronal excitation, measured by an electroencephalogram, nor did it alter the molecular weight of the tracers. These findings suggest that nonthermal transcranial FUS can enhance advective transport of interstitial solutes and their subsequent removal in a completely non-invasive fashion, offering its potential non-pharmacological utility in facilitating clearance of waste from the brain.
