Precise neurosurgical guidance is critical for successful brain surgeries and plays a vital role in all phases of image-guided neurosurgery (IGN). Neuronavigation software enables real-time tracking of surgical tools, ensuring their presentation with high precision in relation to a virtual patient model. Therefore, this work focuses on the development of a novel multimodal IGN system, leveraging deep learning and explainable AI to enhance brain tumor surgery outcomes. The study establishes the clinical and technical requirements of the system for brain tumor surgeries. NeuroIGN adopts a modular architecture, including brain tumor segmentation, patient registration, and explainable output prediction, and integrates open-source packages into an interactive neuronavigational display. The NeuroIGN system components underwent validation and evaluation in both laboratory and simulated operating room (OR) settings. Experimental results demonstrated its accuracy in tumor segmentation and the success of ExplainAI in increasing the trust of medical professionals in deep learning. The proposed system was successfully assembled and set up within 11 min in a pre-clinical OR setting with a tracking accuracy of 0.5 (± 0.1) mm. NeuroIGN was also evaluated as highly useful, with a high frame rate (19 FPS) and real-time ultrasound imaging capabilities. In conclusion, this paper describes not only the development of an open-source multimodal IGN system but also demonstrates the innovative application of deep learning and explainable AI algorithms in enhancing neuronavigation for brain tumor surgeries. Breast cancer (BC) is the leading cause of death among women worldwide. It affects in general women older than 40 years old. Medical images analysis is one of the most promising research areas since it provides facilities for diagnosis and decision-making of several diseases such as BC. This paper conducts a Structured Literature Review (SLR) of the use of Machine Learning (ML) and Image Processing (IP) techniques to deal with BC imaging. A set of 530 papers published between 2000 and August 2019 were selected and analyzed according to ten criteria: year and publication channel, empirical type, research type, medical task, machine learning techniques, datasets used, validation methods, performance measures and image processing techniques which include image pre-processing, segmentation, feature extraction and feature selection. Results showed that diagnosis was the most used medical task and that Deep Learning techniques (DL) were largely used to perform classification. Furthermore, we found out that classification was the most ML objective investigated followed by prediction and clustering. Most of the selected studies used Mammograms as imaging modalities rather than Ultrasound or Magnetic Resonance Imaging with the use of public or private datasets with MIAS as the most frequently investigated public dataset. As for image processing techniques, the majority of the selected studies pre-process their input images by reducing the noise and normalizing the colors, and some of them use segmentation to extract the region of interest with the thresholding method. For feature extraction, we note that researchers extracted the relevant features using classical feature extraction techniques (e.g. Texture features, Shape features, etc.) or DL techniques (e. g. Many current medical image segmentation methods utilize convolutional neural networks (CNNs), with some extended U-Net-based networks relying on deep feature representations to achieve satisfactory results. However, due to the limited receptive fields of convolutional architectures, they are unable to explicitly model the varying range dependencies present in medical images. Recently, advancements in large kernel convolution have allowed for the extraction of a wider range of low frequency information, making this task more achievable. In this paper, we propose TBUnet for solving the problem of difficult to accurately segment lesions with heterogeneous structures and fuzzy borders, such as melanoma, colon polyps and breast cancer. The TBUnet is a pure convolutional network with three branches for extracting high frequency information, low frequency information, and boundary information, respectively. It is capable of extracting features in various areas. To fuse the feature maps from the three branches, TBUnet presents the FL (fusion layer) module, which is based on threshold and logical operation. We design the FE (feature enhancement) module on the skip-connection to emphasize the fine-grained features. In addition, our method varies the number of input channels in different branches at each stage of the network, so that the relationship between low and high frequency features can be learned. TBUnet yields 91.08 DSC on ISIC-2018 for melanoma segmentation, and achieves better performance than state-of-the-art medical image segmentation methods. Furthermore, experimental results with 82.48 DSC and 89.04 DSC obtained on the BUSI dataset and the Kvasir-SEG dataset show that TBUnet outperforms the advanced segmentation methods. Federated learning (FL), a relatively new area of research in medical image analysis, enables collaborative learning of a federated deep learning model without sharing the data of participating clients. In this paper, we propose FedDropoutAvg, a new federated learning approach for detection of tumor in images of colon tissue slides. The proposed method leverages the power of dropout, a commonly employed scheme to avoid overfitting in neural networks, in both client selection and federated averaging processes. We examine FedDropoutAvg against other FL benchmark algorithms for two different image classification tasks using a publicly available multi-site histopathology image dataset. We train and test the proposed model on a large dataset consisting of 1.2 million image tiles from 21 different sites. For testing the generalization of all models, we select held-out test sets from sites that were not used during training. We show that the proposed approach outperforms other FL methods and reduces the performance gap (to less than 3% in terms of AUC on independent test sites) between FL and a central deep learning model that requires all data to be shared for centralized training, demonstrating the potential of the proposed FedDropoutAvg model to be more generalizable than other state-of-the-art federated models. Mobile health (mHealth) intervention systems can employ adaptive strategies to interact with users. Instead of designing such complex strategies manually, reinforcement learning (RL) can be used to adaptively optimize intervention strategies concerning the user's context. In this paper, we focus on the issue of overwhelming interactions when learning a good adaptive strategy for the user in RL-based mHealth intervention agents. We present a data-driven approach integrating psychological insights and knowledge of historical data. It allows RL agents to optimize the strategy of delivering context-aware notifications from empirical data when counterfactual information (user responses when receiving notifications) is missing. Our approach also considers a constraint on the frequency of notifications, which reduces the interaction burden for users. We evaluated our approach in several simulation scenarios using real large-scale running data. In this paper, considering year 2020 and Covid-19, we analyze medical imaging tools and their performance scores in accordance with the dataset size and their complexity. For this, we mainly consider AI-driven tools that employ two different types of image data, namely chest Computed Tomography (CT) and X-ray. We elaborate on their strengths and weaknesses by taking the following important factors into account: i) dataset size; ii) model fitting criteria (over-fitting and under-fitting); iii) transfer learning in the deep learning era; and iv) data augmentation. Medical imaging tools do not explicitly analyze model fitting. Also, using transfer learning, with fewer data, one could possibly build Covid-19 deep learning model but they are limited to education and training. We observe that, in both image modalities, neither the dataset size nor does data augmentation work well for Covid-19 screening purposes because a large dataset does not guarantee all possible Covid-19 manifestations and data augmentation does not create new Covid-19 cases. The measurement of bone mineral density for osteoporosis has always been the focus of researchers because it plays an important role in bone disease diagnosis. However, because of X-ray image noise and the large difference between the bone shapes of patients under the condition of low contrast, existing osteoporosis diagnosis algorithms are difficult to obtain satisfactory results. This paper presents an improved osteoporosis diagnosis algorithm based on U-NET network. Firstly, the bone in the original image are marked and used to construct the data set. And then, by normalizing the input of each layer, it can be ensured that the input data distribution of each layer is stable, so that the purpose of accelerated training can be achieved. Finally, the energy function is calculated by combining the value of the softmax prediction class for each pixel on the final feature map with the Cross entropy loss function and all the segmented images are extracted to obtain the diagnostic result. As the experimental results show that the improved U-net can accurately solve the influence of image interference in the process of bone mineral density measurement. Due to lack of a central bureaucrat in mobile ad hoc networks, the security of the network becomes serious issue. During malicious attacks, according to the motivation of intruder the severity of the threat varies. It may lead to loss of data, energy or throughput. This paper proposes a lightweight Intruder Node Detection and Isolation Action mechanism (INDIA) using feature extraction, feature optimization and classification techniques. The indirect and direct trust features are extracted from each node and the total trust feature is computed by combining them. The trust features are extracted from each node of MANET and these features are optimized using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm as feature optimization technique. These optimized feature sets are then classified using Neural Networks (NN) classifier which identifies the intruder node. The performance of the proposed methodology is studied in terms of various parameters such as success rate in packet delivery, delay in communication and the amount of energy consumption for identifying and isolating the intruder. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a cardiac arrhythmia which is characterized based on the irregsular beating of atria, resulting in, the abnormal atrial patterns that are observed in the electrocardiogram (ECG) signal. The early detection of this pathology is very helpful for minimizing the chances of stroke, other heart-related disorders, and coronary artery diseases. This paper proposes a novel method for the detection of AF pathology based on the analysis of the ECG signal. The method adopts a multi-rate cosine filter bank architecture for the evaluation of coefficients from the ECG signal at different subbands, in turn, the Fractional norm (FN) feature is evaluated from the extracted coefficients at each subband. Then, the AF detection is carried out using a deep learning approach known as the Hierarchical Extreme Learning Machine (H-ELM) from the FN features. The proposed method is evaluated by considering normal and AF pathological ECG signals from public databases. The experimental results reveal that the proposed multi-rate cosine filter bank based on FN features is effective for the detection of AF pathology with an accuracy, sensitivity and specificity values of 99.40%, 98.77%, and 100%, respectively. The performance of the proposed diagnostic features of the ECG signal is compared with other existing features for the detection of AF. With age, our blood vessels are prone to aging, which induces cardiovascular disease. As an important basis for diagnosing heart disease and evaluating heart function, the electrocardiogram (ECG) records cardiac physiological electrical activity. Abnormalities in cardiac physiological activity are directly reflected in the ECG. Thus, ECG research is conducive to heart disease diagnosis. Considering the complexity of arrhythmia detection, we present an improved convolutional neural network (CNN) model for accurate classification. Compared with the traditional machine learning methods, CNN requires no additional feature extraction steps due to the automatic feature processing layers. In this paper, an improved CNN is proposed to automatically classify the heartbeat of arrhythmia. Firstly, all the heartbeats are divided from the original signals. After segmentation, the ECG heartbeats can be inputted into the first convolutional layers. In the proposed structure, kernels with different sizes are used in each convolution layer, which takes full advantage of the features in different scales. Then a max-pooling layer followed. The outputs of the last pooling layer are merged and as the input to fully-connected layers. Our experiment is in accordance with the AAMI inter-patient standard, which included normal beats (N), supraventricular ectopic beats (S), ventricular ectopic beats (V), fusion beats (F), and unknown beats (Q). For verification, the MIT arrhythmia database is introduced to confirm the accuracy of the proposed method, then, comparative experiments are conducted. The experiment demonstrates that our proposed method has high performance for arrhythmia detection, the accuracy is 99.06%. The world population ageing is on the rise, which has led to an increase in the demand for medical care due to diseases and symptoms prevalent in health centers. One of the most prevalent symptoms prevalent in older adults is falls, which affect one-third of patients each year and often result in serious injuries that can lead to death. This paper describes the design of a fall detection system for elderly households living alone using very low resolution thermal sensor arrays. The algorithms implemented were LSTM, GRU, and Bi-LSTM; the last one mentioned being that which obtained the best results at 93% in accuracy. There has been an explosive growth in research over the last decade exploring machine learning techniques for analyzing chest X-ray (CXR) images for screening cardiopulmonary abnormalities. In particular, we have observed a strong interest in screening for tuberculosis (TB). This interest has coincided with the spectacular advances in deep learning (DL) that is primarily based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs). These advances have resulted in significant research contributions in DL techniques for TB screening using CXR images. We review the research studies published over the last five years (2016-2021). We identify data collections, methodical contributions, and highlight promising methods and challenges. Further, we discuss and compare studies and identify those that offer extension beyond binary decisions for TB, such as region-of-interest localization. Cardiac structure contouring is a time consuming and tedious manual activity used for radiotherapeutic dose toxicity planning. We developed an automatic cardiac structure segmentation pipeline for use in low-dose non-contrast planning CT based on deep learning algorithms for small datasets. Fifty CT scans were retrospectively selected and the whole heart, ventricles and atria were contoured. A two stage deep learning pipeline was trained on 41 non contrast planning CTs, tuned with 3 CT scans and validated on 6 CT scans. In the first stage, An InceptionResNetV2 network was used to identify the slices that contained cardiac structures. The second stage consisted of three deep learning models trained on the images containing cardiac structures to segment the structures. The three deep learning models predicted the segmentations/contours on axial, coronal and sagittal images and are combined to create the final prediction. The final accuracy of the pipeline was quantified on 6 volumes by calculating the Dice similarity coefficient (DC), 95% Hausdorff distance (95% HD) and volume ratios between predicted and ground truth volumes. Median DC and 95% HD of 0.96, 0.88, 0.92, 0.80 and 0.82, and 1.86, 2.98, 2.02, 6.16 and 6.46 were achieved for the whole heart, right and left ventricle, and right and left atria respectively. The median differences in volume were -4, -1, + 5, -16 and -20% for the whole heart, right and left ventricle, and right and left atria respectively. The automatic contouring pipeline achieves good results for whole heart and ventricles. Robust automatic contouring with deep learning methods seems viable for local centers with small datasets. This paper presents an empirical study of a formative neural network-based assessment approach by using mobile technology to provide pharmacy students with intelligent diagnostic feedback. An unsupervised learning algorithm was integrated with an audience response system called SIDRA in order to generate states that collect some commonality in responses to questions and add diagnostic feedback for guided learning. A total of 89 pharmacy students enrolled on a Human Anatomy course were taught using two different teaching methods. Forty-four students employed intelligent SIDRA (i-SIDRA), whereas 45 students received the same training but without using i-SIDRA. A statistically significant difference was found between the experimental group (i-SIDRA) and the control group (traditional learning methodology), with T (87) = 6.598, p < 0.001. In four MCQs tests, the difference between the number of correct answers in the first attempt and in the last attempt was also studied. A global effect size of 0.644 was achieved in the meta-analysis carried out. The students expressed satisfaction with the content provided by i-SIDRA and the methodology used during the process of learning anatomy (M = 4.59). Accurate and reliable brain tumor segmentation is a critical component in cancer diagnosis. According to deep learning model, a novel brain tumor segmentation method is developed by integrating fully convolutional neural networks (FCNN) and dense micro-block difference feature (DMDF) into a unified framework so as to obtain segmentation results with appearance and spatial consistency. Firstly, we propose a local feature to describe the rotation invariant property of the texture. In order to deal with the change of rotation and scale in texture image, Fisher vector encoding method is used to analyze the texture feature, which can combine with the scale information without increasing the dimension of the local feature. The obtained local features have strong robustness to rotation and gray intensity variation. Then, the non-quantifiable local feature is fused to the FCNN to perform fine boundary segmentation. Since brain tumors occupy a small portion of the image, deconvolutional layers are designed with skip connections to obtain a high quality feature map. Compared with the traditional MRI brain tumor segmentation methods, the experimental results show that the segmentation accuracy and stability has been greatly improved. In radiology, natural language processing (NLP) allows the extraction of valuable information from radiology reports. It can be used for various downstream tasks such as quality improvement, epidemiological research, and monitoring guideline adherence. Class imbalance, variation in dataset size, variation in report complexity, and algorithm type all influence NLP performance but have not yet been systematically and interrelatedly evaluated. In this study, we investigate these factors on the performance of four types [a fully connected neural network (Dense), a long short-term memory recurrent neural network (LSTM), a convolutional neural network (CNN), and a Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT)] of deep learning-based NLP. Two datasets consisting of radiologist-annotated reports of both trauma radiographs (n = 2469) and chest radiographs and computer tomography (CT) studies (n = 2255) were split into training sets (80%) and testing sets (20%). The training data was used as a source to train all four model types in 84 experiments (Fracture-data) and 45 experiments (Chest-data) with variation in size and prevalence. The performance was evaluated on sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, area under the curve, and F score. After the NLP of radiology reports, all four model-architectures demonstrated high performance with metrics up to > 0.90. CNN, LSTM, and Dense were outperformed by the BERT algorithm because of its stable results despite variation in training size and prevalence. Dermoscopy is a technique used to capture the images of skin, and these images are useful to analyze the different types of skin diseases. Malignant melanoma is a kind of skin cancer whose severity even leads to death. Earlier detection of melanoma prevents death and the clinicians can treat the patients to increase the chances of survival. Only few machine learning algorithms are developed to detect the melanoma using its features. This paper proposes a Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system which equips efficient algorithms to classify and predict the melanoma. Enhancement of the images are done using Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization technique (CLAHE) and median filter. A new segmentation algorithm called Normalized Otsu's Segmentation (NOS) is implemented to segment the affected skin lesion from the normal skin, which overcomes the problem of variable illumination. Fifteen features are derived and extracted from the segmented images are fed into the proposed classification techniques like Deep Learning based Neural Networks and Hybrid Adaboost-Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithms. The proposed system is tested and validated with nearly 992 images (malignant & benign lesions) and it provides a high classification accuracy of 93 %. Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is one of the most catastrophic and life threatening health issue nowadays. Early detection of CVD is an important solution to reduce its devastating effects on health. In this paper, an efficient CVD detection algorithm is identified. The algorithm uses patient demographic data as inputs, along with several ECG signal features extracted automatically through signal processing techniques. Cross-validation results show a 98.29 % accuracy for the decision tree classification algorithm. The algorithm has been integrated into a web based system that can be used at anytime by patients to check their heart health status. At one end of the system is the ECG sensor attached to the patient's body, while at the other end is the detection algorithm. Endotracheal intubation (ETI) is a procedure to manage and secure an unconscious patient's airway. It is one of the most critical skills in emergency or intensive care. Regular training and practice are required for medical providers to maintain proficiency. Currently, ETI training is assessed by human supervisors who may make inconsistent assessments. This study aims at developing an automated assessment system that analyzes ETI skills and classifies a trainee into an experienced or a novice immediately after training. To make the system more available and affordable, we investigate the feasibility of utilizing only hand motion features as determining factors of ETI proficiency. To this end, we extract 18 features from hand motion in time and frequency domains, and also 12 force features for comparison. Subsequently, feature selection algorithms are applied to identify an ideal feature set for developing classification models. Experimental results show that an artificial neural network (ANN) classifier with five hand motion features selected by a correlation-based algorithm achieves the highest accuracy of 91.17% while an ANN with five force features has only 80.06%. Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been used widely in medicine and health care sector. In machine learning, the classification or prediction is a major field of AI. Today, the study of existing predictive models based on machine learning methods is extremely active. Doctors need accurate predictions for the outcomes of their patients' diseases. In addition, for accurate predictions, timing is another significant factor that influences treatment decisions. In this paper, existing predictive models in medicine and health care have critically reviewed. Furthermore, the most famous machine learning methods have explained, and the confusion between a statistical approach and machine learning has clarified. A review of related literature reveals that the predictions of existing predictive models differ even when the same dataset is used. In this study we propose a novel correction scheme that filters Magnetic Resonance Images data, by using a modified Linear Minimum Mean Square Error (LMMSE) estimator which takes into account the joint information of the local features. A closed-form analytical solution for our estimator is presented and it proves to make the filtering process far simpler and faster than other estimation techniques that rely on iterative optimization scheme and require multiple data samples. An experimental validation of our correction scheme was carried out through large scale experiments using both clinical and synthetic MR images, artificially corrupted with rician noise of σ varying from 1 to 40. These noisy images were filtered using our proposed method against the classical LMMSE, the Non-Local Means filter and the Nonlocality-Reinforced Convolutional Neural Networks (NRCNN) techniques. The results show an outstanding performance of our proposed method, given the fact that from σ ≈ 12 onwards, the proposed method outperforms all other methods. Another attention-grabbing feature of our method is that its Structural Similarity does not vary sharply [0.87, 0.95] across the σ spectrum as the other three techniques, which implies that this method can work on a wider range of deteriorated images than the rest of the techniques. Early and accurate diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) remains challenging. Neuropathological studies using brain bank specimens have estimated that a large percentages of clinical diagnoses of PD may be incorrect especially in the early stages. In this paper, a comprehensive computer model is presented for the diagnosis of PD based on motor, non-motor, and neuroimaging features using the recently-developed enhanced probabilistic neural network (EPNN). The model is tested for differentiating PD patients from those with scans without evidence of dopaminergic deficit (SWEDDs) using the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) database, an observational, multi-center study designed to identify PD biomarkers for diagnosis and disease progression. The results are compared to four other commonly-used machine learning algorithms: the probabilistic neural network (PNN), support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbors (k-NN) algorithm, and classification tree (CT). The EPNN had the highest classification accuracy at 92.5 % followed by the PNN (91.6 %), k-NN (90.8 %) and CT (90.2 %). This paper presents a comparative analysis of novel supervised fuzzy adaptive resonance theory (SF-ART), multilayer perceptron (MLP) and Multi Layer Perceptrons (MLP) neural networks over Ballistocardiogram (BCG) signal recognition. To extract essential features of the BCG signal, we applied Biorthogonal wavelets. SF-ART performs classification on two levels. At first level, pre-classifier which is self-organized fuzzy ART tuned for fast learning classifies the input data roughly to arbitrary (M) classes. At the second level, post-classification level, a special array called Affine Look-up Table (ALT) with M elements stores the labels of corresponding input samples in the address equal to the index of fuzzy ART winner. However, in running (testing) mode, the content of an ALT cell with address equal to the index of fuzzy ART winner output will be read. The read value declares the final class that input data belongs to. In this paper, we used two well-known patterns (IRIS and Vowel data) and a medical application (Ballistocardiogram data) to evaluate and check SF-ART stability, reliability, learning speed and computational load. Initial tests with BCG from six subjects (both healthy and unhealthy people) indicate that the SF-ART is capable to perform with a high classification performance, high learning speed (elapsed time for learning around half second), and very low computational load compared to the well-known neural networks such as MLP which needs minutes to learn the training material. Moreover, to extract essential features of the BCG signal, we applied Biorthogonal wavelets. The applied wavelet transform requires no prior knowledge of the statistical distribution of data samples. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a new imaging method that can be used to non-invasively measure the diffusion coefficient of water molecules in biological tissue structures in recent years. Since the DTI data is a tensor space, its segmentation is different from ordinary MRI images. Based on the existing deep learning model, an improved image semantic segmentation method based on super-pixels and conditional random field is proposed. Firstly, this paper uses the existing feature extraction model based on deep learning to obtain rough semantic segmentation results, including high-level semantic information of the image but lacking details of the image. In addition, the super-pixel segmentation algorithm is implemented to obtain super-pixels that carries more low-level information. Secondly, due to the lack of image details in rough segmentation results, the segmentation of the edge of the image is inaccurate. In this paper, a boundary optimization algorithm is proposed to optimize the edge segmentation accuracy of the rough results. Finally, the use of super-pixels for local boundary optimization can improve the segmentation accuracy. Experiments results show that this segment is a practical and effective method. Optic disc (OD) and optic cup (OC) segmentation are important steps for automatic screening and diagnosing of optic nerve head abnormalities such as glaucoma. Many recent works formulated the OD and OC segmentation as a pixel classification task. However, it is hard for these methods to explicitly model the spatial relations between the labels in the output mask. Furthermore, the proportion of the background, OD and OC are unbalanced which also may result in a biased model as well as introduce more noise. To address these problems, we developed an approach that follows a coarse-to-fine segmentation process. We start with a U-Net to obtain a rough segmenting boundary and then crop the area around the boundary to form a boundary contour centered image. Second, inspired by sequence labeling tasks in natural language processing, we regard the OD and OC segmentation as a sequence labeling task and propose a novel fully convolutional network called SU-Net and combine it with the Viterbi algorithm to jointly decode the segmentation boundary. We also introduced a geometric parameter-based data augmentation method to generate more training samples in order to minimize the differences between training and test sets and reduce overfitting. Experimental results show that our method achieved state-of-the-art results on 2 datasets for both OD and OC segmentation and our method outperforms most of the ophthalmologists in terms of achieving agreement out of 6 ophthalmologists on the MESSIDOR dataset for both OD and OC segmentation. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an incurable neurodegenerative disorder accounting for 70%–80% dementia cases worldwide. Although, research on AD has increased in recent years, however, the complexity associated with brain structure and functions makes the early diagnosis of this disease a challenging task. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) is a neuroimaging technology that has been widely used to study the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. In literature, the computer-aided diagnosis of AD is limited to binary classification or diagnosis of AD and MCI stages. However, its applicability to diagnose multiple progressive stages of AD is relatively under-studied. This study explores the effectiveness of rs-fMRI for multi-class classification of AD and its associated stages including CN, SMC, EMCI, MCI, LMCI, and AD. A longitudinal cohort of resting-state fMRI of 138 subjects (25 CN, 25 SMC, 25 EMCI, 25 LMCI, 13 MCI, and 25 AD) from Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) is studied. To provide a better insight into deep learning approaches and their applications to AD classification, we investigate ResNet-18 architecture in detail. We consider the training of the network from scratch by using single-channel input as well as performed transfer learning with and without fine-tuning using an extended network architecture. We experimented with residual neural networks to perform AD classification task and compared it with former research in this domain. The performance of the models is evaluated using precision, recall, f1-measure, AUC and ROC curves. We found that our networks were able to significantly classify the subjects. We achieved improved results with our fine-tuned model for all the AD stages with an accuracy of 100%, 96.85%, 97.38%, 97.43%, 97.40% and 98.01% for CN, SMC, EMCI, LMCI, MCI, and AD respectively. However, in terms of overall performance, we achieved state-of-the-art results with an average accuracy of 97.92% and 97.88% for off-the-shelf and fine-tuned models respectively. The Analysis of results indicate that classification and prediction of neurodegenerative brain disorders such as AD using functional magnetic resonance imaging and advanced deep learning methods is promising for clinical decision making and have the potential to assist in early diagnosis of AD and its associated stages. Computer assisted automatic smart pattern analysis of cancer affected pixel structure takes critical role in pre-interventional decision making for oral cancer treatment. Internet of Things (IoT) in healthcare systems is now emerging solution for modern e-healthcare system to provide high quality medical care. In this research work, we proposed a novel method which utilizes a modified vesselness measurement and a Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) to identify the oral cancer region structure in IoT based smart healthcare system. The robust vesselness filtering scheme handles noise while reserving small structures, while the CNN framework considerably improves classification accuracy by deblurring focused region of interest (ROI) through integrating with multi-dimensional information from feature vector selection step. The marked feature vector points are extracted from each connected component in the region and used as input for training the CNN. During classification, each connected part is individually analysed using the trained DCNN by considering the feature vector values that belong to its region. For a training of 1500 image dataset, an accuracy of 96.8% and sensitivity of 92% is obtained. Hence, the results of this work validate that the proposed algorithm is effective and accurate in terms of classification of oral cancer region in accurate decision making. Brain tumor detection depicts a tough job because of its shape, size and appearance variations. In this manuscript, a deep learning model is deployed to predict input slices as a tumor (unhealthy)/non-tumor (healthy). This manuscript employs a high pass filter image to prominent the inhomogeneities field effect of the MR slices and fused with the input slices. Moreover, the median filter is applied to the fused slices. The resultant slices quality is improved with smoothen and highlighted edges of the input slices. After that, based on these slices' intensity, a 4-connected seed growing algorithm is applied, where optimal threshold clusters the similar pixels from the input slices. The segmented slices are then supplied to the fine-tuned two layers proposed stacked sparse autoencoder (SSAE) model. The hyperparameters of the model are selected after extensive experiments. At the first layer, 200 hidden units and at the second layer 400 hidden units are utilized. The testing is performed on the softmax layer for the prediction of the images having tumors and no tumors. The suggested model is trained and checked on BRATS datasets i.e., 2012(challenge and synthetic), 2013, and 2013 Leaderboard, 2014, and 2015 datasets. Background: The use of artificial intelligence, including machine learning, is increasing in medicine. Use of machine learning is rising in the prediction of patient outcomes. Machine learning may also be able to enhance and augment anesthesia clinical procedures such as airway management. In this study, we sought to develop a machine learning algorithm that could classify vocal cords and tracheal airway anatomy real-time during video laryngoscopy or bronchoscopy as well as compare the performance of three novel convolutional networks for detecting vocal cords and tracheal rings. Methods: Following institutional approval, a clinical dataset of 775 video laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy videos was used. The dataset was divided into two categories for use for training and testing. We used three convolutional neural networks (CNNs): ResNet, Inception and MobileNet. Backpropagation and a mean squared error loss function were used to assess accuracy as well as minimize bias and variance. Following training, we assessed transferability using the generalization error of the CNN, sensitivity and specificity, average confidence error, outliers, overall confidence percentage, and frames per second for live video feeds. After the training was complete, 22 models using 0 to 25,000 steps were generated and compared. Results: The overall confidence of classification for the vocal cords and tracheal rings for ResNet, Inception and MobileNet CNNs were as follows: 0.84, 0.78, and 0.64 for vocal cords, respectively, and 0.69, 0.72, 0.54 for tracheal rings, respectively. Transfer learning following additional training resulted in improved accuracy of ResNet and Inception for identifying the vocal cords (with a confidence of 0.96 and 0.93 respectively). The two best performing CNNs, ResNet and Inception, achieved a specificity of 0.985 and 0.971, respectively, and a sensitivity of 0.865 and 0.892, respectively. Inception was able to process the live video feeds at 10 FPS while ResNet processed at 5 FPS. Both were able to pass a feasibility test of identifying vocal cords and tracheal rings in a video feed. Conclusions: We report the development and evaluation of a CNN that can identify and classify airway anatomy in real time. This neural network demonstrates high performance. The availability of artificial intelligence may improve airway management and bronchoscopy by helping to identify key anatomy real time. Thus, potentially improving performance and outcomes during these procedures. Further, this technology may theoretically be extended to the settings of airway pathology or airway management in the hands of experienced providers. 3D/3D image registration in IGRT, which aligns planning Computed Tomography (CT) image set with on board Cone Beam CT (CBCT) image set in a short time with high accuracy, is still a challenge due to its high computational cost and complex anatomical structure of medical image. In order to overcome these difficulties, a new method is proposed which contains a coarse registration and a fine registration. For the coarse registration, a supervised regression convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is used to optimize the spatial variation by minimizing the loss when combine the CT images with the CBCT images. For the fine registration, intensity-based image registration is used to calculate the accurate spatial difference of the input image pairs. A coarse registration can get a rough result with a wide capture range in less than 0.5 s. Sequentially a fine registration can get accurate results in a reasonable short time. RSD-111 T chest phantom was used to test our new method. The set-up error was calculated in less than 10s in time scale, and was reduced to sub-millimeter level in spatial scale. During mammogram screening, there is a higher probability that detection of cancers is missed, and more than 16 percentage of breast cancer is not detected by radiologists. This problem can be solved by employing image processing algorithms which enhances the accuracy of the diagnostic through image segmentation which reduces the misclassified malignant cancers. By employing segmentation, the unnecessary regions in the breast close to the boundary between the breast tissue and segmented pectoral muscle can be removed, therefore enhancing the accuracy the calculation as well as feature estimation. In-order to enhance the accuracy of classification, the proposed classifier integrates the decision trees and neural network into a system to report the progress of the breast cancer patients in an appropriate manner with the help of technology used in healthcare system. The proposed classifier successfully demonstrated that it achieved more accurate prediction when compared with other widely used algorithms, namely, K-Nearest Neighbors, Support Vector Machine and Naive Bayes algorithm. The institutions of education can utilize educational data mining to examine the performance of students which can support the institution in recognizing the student's performance. In data mining classification is a familiar technique that has been implemented widely to find the performance of students. In this study a new prediction algorithm for evaluating student's performance in academia has been developed based on both classification and clustering techniques and been ested on a real time basis with student dataset of various academic disciplines of higher educational institutions in Kerala, India. The result proves that the hybrid algorithm combining clustering and classification approaches yields results that are far superior in terms of achieving accuracy in prediction of academic performance of the students. Cholangiocarcinoma, cancer of the bile ducts, is often diagnosed via magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP). Due to low resolution, noise and difficulty is actually seeing the tumor in the images, especially by examining only a single image, there has been very little development of automated systems for cholangiocarcinoma diagnosis. This paper presents a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for the automated preliminary detection of the tumor using a single MRCP image. The multi-stage system employs algorithms and techniques that correspond to the radiological diagnosis characteristics employed by doctors. A popular artificial neural network, the multi-layer perceptron (MLP), is used for decision making to differentiate images with cholangiocarcinoma from those without. The test results achieved was 94% when differentiating only healthy and tumor images, and 88% in a robust multi-disease test where the system had to identify the tumor images from a large set of images containing common biliary diseases. Coronary calcium detection in medicine image processing is a hot research topic. According to the low resolution and complex background in medicine image, an improved coronary calcium detection algorithm based on the Single Shot MultiBox Detector (SSD) in Mimics is proposed in this paper. The algorithm firstly uses the aggregate channel feature model to preprocess the image to obtain the suspected calcium area, which greatly reduces the time of single-frame image detection. The basic network VGG-16 is replaced by Resnet-50, which introduces the identity mapping to solve the problem of reducing the detection accuracy when the number of network layers are increased. Finally, the powerful and flexible two-parameter loss function is used to optimize the training deep network and improve the network model generalization ability. Qualitative and quantitative experiments show that the performance of the proposed detection algorithm exceeds the existing calcium detection algorithms, and the detection efficiency is improved while ensuring the accuracy of calcium detection. In this paper, we purpose a diagnostic procedure to identify the optic nerve disease from visual evoked potential (VEP) signals using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Multilayer feed forward ANN trained with a Levenberg Marquart backpropagation algorithm was implemented. The correct classification rate was 96.87% for subjects having optic nerve disease and 96.66% for healthy subjects. The end results are classified as healthy and diseased. Testing results were found to be compliant with the expected results that are derived from the physician’s direct diagnosis, angiography, VEP and pattern electroretinography. Existing brain region segmentation algorithms based on deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) are inefficient for object boundary segmentation. In order to enhance the segmentation accuracy of brain tissue, this paper proposed an object region segmentation algorithm that combines pixel-level information and semantic information. Firstly, we extract semantic information by CNN with the attention module and get the coarse segmentation results through a specific pixel-level classifier. Then, we exploit conditional random fields to model the relationship between the underlying pixels so as to get local features. Finally, the semantic information and the local pixel-level information are respectively used as the unary potential and the binary potential of the Gibbs distribution, and the combination of both can obtain the fine region segmentation algorithm based on the fusion of pixel-level information and the semantic information. A large number of qualitative and quantitative test results show that our proposed algorithm has higher precision than the existing state-of-the-art deep feature models, which can better solve the problem of rough edge segmentation and produce good 3D visualization effect. Hearing loss, a partial or total inability to hear, is known as hearing impairment. Untreated hearing loss can have a bad effect on normal social communication, and it can cause psychological problems in patients. Therefore, we design a three-category classification system to detect the specific category of hearing loss, which is beneficial to be treated in time for patients. Before the training and test stages, we use the technology of data augmentation to produce a balanced dataset. Then we use deep autoencoder neural network to classify the magnetic resonance brain images. In the stage of deep autoencoder, we use stacked sparse autoencoder to generate visual features, and softmax layer to classify the different brain images into three categories of hearing loss. Our method can obtain good experimental results. The overall accuracy of our method is 99.5%, and the time consuming is 0.078 s per brain image. Our proposed method based on stacked sparse autoencoder works well in classification of hearing loss images. Fatty Liver Disease (FLD) is caused by the deposition of fat in liver cells and leads to deadly diseases such as liver cancer. Several FLD detection and characterization systems using machine learning (ML) based on Support Vector Machines (SVM) have been applied. These ML systems utilize large number of ultrasonic grayscale features, pooling strategy for selecting the best features and several combinations of training/testing. As result, they are computationally intensive, slow and do not guarantee high performance due to mismatch between grayscale features and classifier type. This study proposes a reliable and fast Extreme Learning Machine (ELM)-based tissue characterization system (a class of Symtosis) for risk stratification of ultrasound liver images. ELM is used to train single layer feed forward neural network (SLFFNN). The input-to-hidden layer weights are randomly generated reducing computational cost. The only weights to be trained are hidden-to-output layer which is done in a single pass (without any iteration) making ELM faster than conventional ML methods. Adapting four types of K-fold cross-validation ( K = 2, 3, 5 and 10) protocols on three kinds of data sizes: S0-original , S4-four splits , S8-sixty four splits (a total of 12 cases) and 46 types of grayscale features, we stratify the FLD US images using ELM and benchmark against SVM. Using the US liver database of 63 patients (27 normal/36 abnormal), our results demonstrate superior performance of ELM compared to SVM, for all cross-validation protocols ( K2, K3, K5 and K10) and all types of US data sets ( S0, S4, and S8) in terms of sensitivity, specificity, accuracy and area under the curve (AUC). Using the K10 cross-validation protocol on S8 data set, ELM showed an accuracy of 96.75% compared to 89.01% for SVM, and correspondingly, the AUC: 0.97 and 0.91, respectively. Further experiments also showed the mean reliability of 99% for ELM classifier, along with the mean speed improvement of 40% using ELM against SVM. Few studies in the literature have researched the use of surface electromyography (sEMG) for motor assessment post-stroke due to the complexity of this type of signal. However, recent advances in signal processing and machine learning have provided fresh opportunities for analyzing complex, non-linear, non-stationary signals, such as sEMG. This paper presents a method for identification of the upper limb movements from sEMG signals using a combination of digital signal processing, that is discrete wavelet transform, and the enhanced probabilistic neural network (EPNN). To explore the potential of sEMG signals for monitoring motor rehabilitation progress, this study used sEMG signals from a subset of movements of the Arm Motor Ability Test (AMAT) as inputs into a movement classification algorithm. The importance of a particular frequency domain feature, that is the ratio of the mean absolute values between sub-bands, was discovered in this work. An average classification accuracy of 75.5% was achieved using the proposed approach with a maximum accuracy of 100%. The performance of the proposed method was compared with results obtained using three other classification algorithms: support vector machine (SVM), k-Nearest Neighbors (k-NN), and probabilistic neural network (PNN) in terms of sEMG movement classification. The study demonstrated the capability of using upper limb sEMG signals to identify and distinguish between functional movements used in standard upper limb motor assessments for stroke patients. The combination of big data and deep learning is a world-shattering technology that can make a great impact on any industry if used in a proper way. With the availability of large volume of health care datasets and progressions in deep learning techniques, systems are now well equipped in diagnosing many health problems. Utilizing the intensity of substantial historical information in electronic health record (EHR), we built up, a conventional predictive temporal model utilizing recurrent neural systems (RNN) like LSTM and connected to longitudinal time stepped EHR. Experience records were contribution to RNN to anticipate the analysis and prescription classes for a resulting visit during heart disappointment (e.g. diagnosis codes, drug codes or method codes). In this paper, we also investigated whether use of deep learning to model temporal relations among events in electronic health records (EHRs) would enhance the model performance in predicting initial diagnosis of heart failure (HF) compared to some of the traditional methods that disregard temporality. By examining these time stamped EHRs, we could recognize the associations between various diagnosis occasions and finally predicate when a patient is being analyzed for a disease. In any case, it is hard to access the current EHR data straightforwardly, since almost all data are sparse and not standardized. Along these lines, we proposed a robust model for prediction of heart failure. The fundamental commitment of this paper is to predict the failure of heart by means of a neural network model based on patient's electronic medicinal information. Renal segmentation is one of the most fundamental and challenging task in computer aided diagnosis systems. In order to overcome the shortcomings of automatic kidney segmentation based on deep network for abdominal CT images, a two-stage semantic segmentation of kidney and space-occupying lesion area based on SCNN and ResNet models combined with SIFT-flow transformation is proposed in paper, which is divided into two stages: image retrieval and semantic segmentation. To facilitate the image retrieval, a metric learning-based approach is firstly adopted to construct a deep convolutional neural network structure using SCNN and ResNet network to extract image features and minimize the impact of interference factors on features, so as to obtain the ability to represent the abdominal CT scan image with the same angle under different imaging conditions. And then, SIFT Flow transformation is introduced, which adopts MRF to fuse label information, priori spatial information and smoothing information to establish the dense matching relationship of pixels so that the semantics can be transferred from the known image to the target image so as to obtain the semantic segmentation result of kidney and space-occupying lesion area. In order to validate effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed method, we conduct experiments on self-establish CT dataset, focus on kidney organ and most of which have tumors inside of the kidney, and abnormal deformed shape of kidney. The experimental results qualitatively and quantitatively show that the accuracy of kidney segmentation is greatly improved, and the key information of the proportioned tumor occupying a small area of the image are exhibited a good segmentation results. Skeletal bone age assessment is a widely used standard procedure in both disease detection and growth prediction for children in endocrinology. Conventional manual assessment methods mainly rely on personal experience in observing X-ray images of left hand and wrist to calculate bone age, which show some intrinsic limitations from low efficiency to unstable accuracy. To address these problems, some automated methods based on image processing or machine learning have been proposed, while their performances are not satisfying enough yet in assessment accuracy. Motivated by the remarkable success of deep learning (DL) techniques in the fields of image classification and speech recognition, we develop a deep automated skeletal bone age assessment model based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and support vector regression (SVR) using multiple kernel learning (MKL) algorithm to process heterogeneous features in this paper. This deep framework has been constructed, not only exploring the X-ray images of hand and twist but also some other heterogeneous information like race and gender. The experiment results prove its better performance with higher bone age assessment accuracy on two different data sets compared with the state of the art, indicating that the fused heterogeneous features provide a better description of the degree of bones' maturation.
