Poultry are sensitive to red objects, such as comb and blood on the body surface, likely inducing injurious pecking in flocks. Light is an important factor that affects the pecking behavior of poultry. A wooden box was built to investigate the effects of Light Emitting Diode (LED) light color (warm white and cold white) and intensity (5 and 50 lux) of background light on the discrimination of red objects in broilers. A piece of red photographic paper (Paper 1) was used to simulate a red object and paired with another piece of paper (Paper 2 to 8) with a different color. Bigger number of the paired paper indicated greater color difference. The experiment consisted of three phases: adaptation, training, and test. In the adaptation phase, birds were selected for the adaptation to reduce the stress from the box. In the training phase, birds were trained to discriminate and peck at Paper 1 when paired with Paper 8 under one type of background light. Twenty-three birds were tested when the paired paper was changed from Paper 7 to 2. Each pair of paper included 12 trials for every bird, and response time to peck and proportion of choices of Paper 1 in the last 10 trials were collected. The results showed that broilers tested under 5 lux light had longer response times than broilers tested under 50 lux light (P < 0.05). When Paper 1 was paired with paper 7, broilers tested under warm white light had lower proportion of choices of Paper 1 than those tested under cold white light (P < 0.05). Color difference had a significant effect on response time of broilers (P < 0.05). Moreover, the proportion of choices of Paper 1 decreased to 50% (chance-level performance) when color of the paired paper was gradually similar to Paper 1. Conclusively, rearing broilers in warm white rather than cold white light with appropriate light intensity should be recommended to reduce damaging pecking behavior in broiler production. Measurement of nutrient digestibility is a key pillar in estimating the value of feeds for livestock. Conditions are not always amendable to estimating feed digestibility through total collection methods, and as a result digestibility markers are frequently employed. The first “Digestibility markers” were reported in the early 1900s where colored glass beads were used to estimate the flow of digesta through the digestive tract. Subsequently, a myriad of digestibility markers has been assessed with the internal markers; acid insoluble ash, acid detergent lignin, indigestible neutral detergent fiber and n-alkanes and the external markers titanium dioxide and chromic oxide being the most common. Chromic oxide (Cr2 O3) was first proposed as a digestibility maker in 1918 and continues to be widely used in modern day metabolism, confined performance and grazing livestock experiments. It was the demand to use chromic acid as a digestibility marker that led Terry and Mira Fenton to publish the article “An improved procedure for the determination of chromic oxide in feed and feces” in the Canadian Journal of Animal Science in 1979. This became the most cited article in the history of the journal with over 800 citations. The procedure eliminated the use of nitric acid in a pre-digestion step and ashing reduced the organic matter content, making it less likely that perchloric acid would be converted to anhydrous perchloric acid which poses an explosive hazard. The procedure continues to be widely used to measure Cr2 O3 as a digestibility marker and has made a significant contribution to our assessment of the value of a wide range of feeds for Canadian livestock. Static quantification measures of chemical components are commonly used to make certain assumptions about forage or feed nutritive value and quality. In order for modern nutrient requirement models to estimate intake and digestibility more accurately, kinetic measures of ruminal fiber degradation are necessary. Compared to in vivo experiments, in vitro (IV) and in situ (IS) experimental techniques are relatively simple and inexpensive methods to determine the extent and rate of ruminal fiber degradation. This paper summarizes limitations of these techniques and statistical analyses of the resulting data, highlights key updates to these techniques in the last 30 yr, and presents opportunities for further improvements to these techniques regarding ruminal fiber degradation. The principle biological component of these techniques, ruminal fluid, is still highly variable because it is influenced by ruminally fistulated animal diet type and timing of feeding, and in the case of the IV technique by collection and transport procedures. Commercialization has contributed to the standardization, mechanization, and automation of the IV true digestibility technique, for example, the well-known DaisyII Incubator. There has been limited commercialization of supplies for the IS technique and several review papers focused on standardization in the last 30 yr; however, the IS experimental technique is not standardized and there remains variation within and among laboratories. Regardless of improved precision resulting from enhancements of these techniques, the accuracy and precision of determining the indigestible fraction are fundamental to modeling digestion kinetics and the use of these estimates in more complex dynamic nutritional modeling. Opportunities for focused research and development are additional commercialization and standardization, methods to improve the precision and accuracy of indigestible fiber fraction, data science applications, and statistical analyses of results, especially for IS data. In situ data is typically fitted to one of a few first-order kinetic models, and parameters are estimated without determining if the selected model has the best fit. Animal experimentation will be fundamental to the future of ruminant nutrition and IV and IS techniques will remain vital to bring together nutritive value with forage quality. Graduate education is an important aspect of the life of most academic scientists and a serious responsibility because it comes with the obligation to help students achieve their career and life goals. It can also be very fulfilling for the graduate mentor in terms of personal satisfaction and advancement of the research program. Learning to be a good major professor is an active process that depends on developing a formal framework of education and modifying that framework for each student based on past experiences and experimentation, advice from colleagues, and the individual personality of the student. Perhaps most important is for the graduate mentor to buy into the success and well-being of the student. Among the characteristics that a major professor could seek to instill in his or her students are critical and independent thinking, self-confidence, a thick skin, teamwork, laboratory skills and understanding, and the ability for hard work. Work to make science joyful by celebrating accomplishments, creating a fun environment in the lab, and stressing the societal value of science as compared to personal rewards or ambition. Constructing dynamic mathematical models of biological systems requires estimating unknown parameters from available experimental data, usually using a statistical fitting procedure. This procedure is usually called parameter identification, parameter estimation, model fitting, or model calibration. In animal science, parameter identification is often performed without analytic considerations on the possibility of determining unique values of the model parameters. These analytical studies are related to the mathematical property of structural identifiability, which refers to the theoretical ability to recover unique values of the model parameters from the measures defined in an experimental setup and use the model structure as the sole basis. The structural identifiability analysis is a powerful tool for model construction because it informs whether the parameter identification problem is well-posed (i.e., the problem has a unique solution). Structural identifiability analysis is helpful to determine which actions (e.g., model reparameterization, choice of new data measurements, and change of the model structure) are needed to render the model parameters identifiable (when possible). The mathematical technicalities associated with structural identifiability analysis are very sophisticated. However, the development of dedicated, freely available software tools enables the application of identifiability analysis without needing to be an expert in mathematics and computer programming. We refer to such a non-expert user as a practitioner for hands-on purposes. However, a practitioner should be familiar with the model construction and software implementation process. In this paper, we propose to adopt a practitioner approach that takes advantage of available software tools to integrate identifiability analysis in the modeling practice in the animal science field. The application of structural identifiability implies switching our regard of the parameter identification problem as a downstream process (after data collection) to an upstream process (before data collection) where experiment design is applied to guarantee identifiability. This upstream approach will substantially improve the workflow of model construction toward robust and valuable models in animal science. This paper presents the application of machine learning algorithms to identify pigs’ behaviors from data collected using the wireless sensor nodes mounted on pigs. The sensor node attached to a pig’s back senses the acceleration and angular velocity in three axes, and the sensed data are transmitted to a host computer wirelessly. Two video cameras, one attached to the ceiling of the pigpen and the other one to a fence, provided ground truth for data annotations. The data were collected from pigs for 131 h over 2 mo. As the typical behavior period depends on the behavior type, we segmented the acceleration data with different window sizes (WS) and step sizes (SS), and tested how the classification performance of different activities varied with different WS and SS. After exploring the possible combinations, we selected the optimum WS and SS. To compare performance, we used five machine learning algorithms, specifically support vector machine, k-nearest neighbors, decision trees, naive Bayes, and random forest (RF). Among the five algorithms, RF achieved the highest F1 score for four major behaviors consisting of 92.36% in total. The F1 scores of the algorithm were 0.98 for “eating,” 0.99 for “lying,” 0.93 for “walking,” and 0.91 for “standing” behaviors. The optimal WS was 7 s for “eating” and “lying,” and 3 s for “walking” and “standing.” The proposed work demonstrates that, based on the length of behavior, the adaptive window and step sizes increase the classification performance. Skeletal muscle hypertrophy is a culmination of catabolic and anabolic processes that are interwoven into major metabolic pathways, and as such modulation of skeletal muscle metabolism may have implications on animal growth efficiency. Muscle is composed of a heterogeneous population of muscle fibers that can be classified by metabolism (oxidative or glycolytic) and contractile speed (slow or fast). Although slow fibers (type I) rely heavily on oxidative metabolism, presumably to fuel long or continuous bouts of work, fast fibers (type IIa, IIx, and IIb) vary in their metabolic capability and can range from having a high oxidative capacity to a high glycolytic capacity. The plasticity of muscle permits continuous adaptations to changing intrinsic and extrinsic stimuli that can shift the classification of muscle fibers, which has implications on fiber size, nutrient utilization, and protein turnover rate. Selecting on increased breast meat yield and body weight (BW) is thought to be associated with the increasing prevalence of leg disorders. A disorder of particular importance is tibial dyschondroplasia (TD), which is characterized as uncalcified cartilage in the proximal area of the tibiotarsal bone, leading to increased lameness, reduced feed and water intake, and subsequently poorer production efficiency and increased pre-slaughter mortality. Although it is hypothesized that TD is more prevalent in fast-growing poultry, this relationship can vary across studies making it challenging to distill the relationship between BW and TD, especially as studies of TD span several decades. Therefore, a systematic literature search and meta-analysis was conducted to identify factors influencing TD incidence. To date, the systematic literature search has resulted in 21 eligible papers, although data are still being extracted from the literature. Data extracted from each study included TD incidence (%), BW (kg), species (turkeys vs. broilers), sex (male vs. female), and age (weeks) of the animals. Preliminary univariable models have been developed based on the current database. Univariable generalized linear mixed models were developed in SAS (PROC GLIMMIX) including study as a random effect to evaluate the relationship between TD incidence and BW, species, sex, and age. Turkeys (27.3 ± 0.08%) had a greater TD incidence than broilers (19.3 ± 0.03%); however, this difference was not significant (P = 0.3481). There was a tendency for age to influence TD incidence (P = 0.0553) and a significant effect of BW (P < 0.0001). TD incidence also tended to differ between the sexes, with greater incidence in males (22.9 ± 0.07%) than females (11.3 ± 0.05%; P = 0.0657). After extracting all available data from the literature, further analysis will be conducted to consider multivariable models to predict TD. As such, caution should be used when generalizing these results due to the preliminary nature of the database. With the currently available data, the results of this study support the relationship between BW/size and TD. Furthermore, this study illustrates that TD is a prevalent challenge in both major poultry species. A renewed interest in data analytics and decision support systems in developing automated computer systems is facilitating the emergence of hybrid intelligent systems by combining artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms with classical modeling paradigms such as mechanistic modeling (HIMM) and agent-based models (iABM). Data analytics have evolved remarkably, and the scientific community may not yet fully grasp the power and limitations of some tools. Existing statistical assumptions might need to be re-assessed to provide a more thorough competitive advantage in animal production systems towards sustainability. This paper discussed the evolution of data analytics from a competitive advantage perspective within academia and illustrated the combination of different advanced technological systems in developing HIMM. The progress of analytical tools was divided into three stages: collect and respond, predict and prescribe, and smart learning and policy making, depending on the level of their sophistication (simple to complicated analysis). The collect and respond stage is responsible for ensuring the data is correct and free of influential data points, and it represents the data and information phases for which data are cataloged and organized. The predict and prescribe stage results in gained knowledge from the data and comprises most predictive modeling paradigms, and optimization and risk assessment tools are used to prescribe future decision-making opportunities. The third stage aims to apply the information obtained in the previous stages to foment knowledge and use it for rational decisions. This stage represents the pinnacle of acquired knowledge that leads to wisdom, and AI technology is intrinsic. Although still incipient, HIMM and iABM form the forthcoming stage of competitive advantage. HIMM may not increase our ability to understand the underlying mechanisms controlling the outcomes of a system, but it may increase the predictive ability of existing models by helping the analyst explain more of the data variation. The scientific community still has some issues to be resolved, including the lack of transparency and reporting of AI that might limit code reproducibility. It might be prudent for the scientific community to avoid the shiny object syndrome (i.e. AI) and look beyond the current knowledge to understand the mechanisms that might improve productivity and efficiency to lead agriculture towards sustainable and responsible achievements. In recent times, there has been a growing focus on the well-being and healthcare of small ruminants, particularly in relation to the issue of anemia due to infection with blood-feeding gastrointestinal nema-todes, such as Haemonchus contortus. The objective of this study was to assess the hematocrit levels in blood samples obtained from small ruminants, specifically goats. Additionally, the study is an attempt to design and create a quick sensor for identifying anemia, which could be conveniently used on farms. A total of 75 mature, intact male Spanish goats were subjected to hematocrit analysis to ascertain their spectrum of hematocrit values and association with anemic conditions. Simultaneously, a unique sensor with user-friendly features was developed to promptly provide farmers with feedback on the anemic status of animals using AI-based machine learning algorithms, enabling timely intervention. The sensor utilized a semi-invasive approach with minimal blood sample requirement. 30 ^L of blood was dropped on glycerol soaked Whatman filter paper No. 1, and images were taken at 90 sec, 150 sec, and 270 sec to capture the blood pattern on filter paper soaked in glycerol using a cell phone. These images were correlated with actual hematocrit value obtained from conventional hematocrit analysis. A RMSprop with adjusted learning rate convolution neural network (RMSprop-CNN) based images classification model was developed for the classification of different patterns at different levels of hematocrit. The model was trained on a total of 1,000 images with a training and testing split of 80:20 ratio. For the optimization process, the Adam optimizer with a learning rate of 0.001 is employed. The model is compiled with a categorical cross-entropy loss function, aiming to improve its accuracy metric over training iterations. The initial studies demonstrated a detection accuracy level of 70.31 % at 10 epochs in identifying different hematocrit levels (Level 1; healthy, to Level 5; severely anemic) but improved significantly up to 94.89 % by 100 epochs, resulting in a notable reduction in the time and level of knowledge previously necessary for conducting such evaluations. The present study not only provides valuable insights into the hematological characteristics of small ruminants, but also establishes a foundation for the development of a straightforward and efficient method for detecting anemia. Enrichment increases the ability of a sow to express innate behavior in a barren environment and can reduce aggressive behaviors, stress, and promote animal welfare. The objective of this study was to determine sow interaction with different types of enrichment materials provided before farrowing. A total of 11 sows were randomly assigned an enrichment combination of cardboard, paper, and banana leaves. Sows received two enrichment types, then enrichment was switched for the following day, until all combinations were completed. The enrichment material hung from 2x4 wood using ropes that hung the enrichment and chains placed in the ceiling of the farrowing room that held the 2x4 above the pen of each sow. Therefore, enrichment was placed within the nose reach of each sow. Enrichment material (113 g) was placed in the pens at 0700 h and left for 24 h each day before changing with another enrichment combination. Any enrichment material remaining was weighed. Final weight varied by treatment (P = 0.01), with sows consuming the least of cardboard (24.9 ± 10.0 g) and having an equal preference for banana leaves and paper (74.1 ± 10.0 g and 50.1 ± 11.3 g, respectively). Scan sampling was utilized to measure the frequency of interaction with the enrichments. The scans were designed with the first hour recording every minute a sow interacted with enrichment and the following 3 hours recording every 10 minutes. Continuous observation for the first hour of placement was performed for count data. Each time the sow made contact with the enrichment with her nose, the observation was recorded. The results of the behavior observation suggested that time in contact with enrichment did not differ (P > 0.05), nor did the number of times the pig-initiated contact with enrichment (P > 0.05). In conclusion, sow preference showed that bananas and papers were preferred over cardboard. However, sows will engage with any enrichment material provided before farrowing. Prediction models for estimating feed intake (FI) or metabolizable energy intake (MEI) of pigs are available in the literature. During the recent two decades, several reports have addressed the influence of heat stress on FI. The objectives of the present work were to validate the accuracy of prediction equations for estimating FI or MEI of pigs in the literature using data from heat stress experiments and to develop novel equations for estimating FI and MEI of pigs under thermoneutral or heat stress environment. A total of 123 data from 25 research papers measuring the effects of heat stress on FI of pigs published between 2001 and 2021 were used for the validation of previous equations and the development of novel equations. In the 25 papers, the thermoneutral temperature (T) ranged from 17 to 24℃ and the heat stress T ranged from 21 to 35℃. The body weight (BW) of pigs ranged from 19 to 119 kg. In the first validation study, the equation for estimating FI was evaluated: FI, g/day = -1,264 + 73.6×BW - 0.26×BW² + 117×T - 2.40×T² - 0.95×T×BW. The slope representing a linear bias did not differ from 0 but the intercept representing a mean bias was greater than 0 (109 ± 36; P < 0.01), meaning that the predicted mean underestimated the FI. In the second validation study, the equation for estimating MEI using equations for lower critical temperature (LCT) and fraction of MEI: LCT, ℃ = 17.9 - 0.0375×BW and fraction of MEI = 1 - 0.012914 × [T - (LCT + 3)] - 0.001179 × [T - (LCT + 3)]2. The slope representing a linear bias did not differ from 0 but the intercept representing a mean bias was greater than 0 (731 ± 68; P < 0.001), meaning that the predicted mean underestimated the MEI. A novel equation for estimating MEI under thermoneutral or heat stress environment was developed: MEI, kcal/day = 2,603 + 137×BW - 0.189×BW² - 38.4×T - 0.556×T² - 1.165×T×BW (P < 0.001; R² = 0.83). An equation for estimating fraction of MEI under thermoneutral or heat stress environment was also developed: fraction of MEI = 1 - 0.00677 × [T - (LCT + 3)] - 0.000668 × [T - (LCT + 3)]² (P < 0.001; R² = 0.98). In conclusion, previously published equations underestimate FI and MEI and novel equations for estimating MEI under thermoneutral or heat stress environment have been developed in the present work. The circadian rhythm alters forage chemical composition by balancing processes of photosynthesis, respiration, and transpiration. Timing of moving animals to a new paddock in a rotationally stocked system may take advantage of potential improvements in forage quality. The objective of this study was to collate available peer-reviewed papers aiming at comparing the forage quality and grazing dairy cattle performance when moved to a new paddock either in the morning (a.m.) or afternoon (p.m.). Twenty-four studies were gathered in total, and the number of observations per variable varied according to its availability within the studies. Among forage chemical composition parameters, contents of dry matter (DM), total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNC), soluble carbohydrates (SC), starch, neutral-detergent fiber (NDF), aciddetergent fiber (ADF), acid-detergent lignin (ADL), ether extract (EE), crude protein (CP), and digestibility were assessed. The animal performance parameters included dry matter intake (DMI), milk yield (MY), energy-corrected milk yield (ECM), milk fat (MF) and milk protein (MP) contents, fat yield (FY), and protein yield (PY). A meta-analysis was performed according to a random effects model weighted by inverse variance (Comprehensive Meta-Analysis V3.3.070). Means, standard deviations or p-values, and number of observations were used to compute the effect sizes. Heterogeneity between observed effect sizes was examined with the Cochran’s Q test and the I2 statistic. The standardized mean difference was reported with its 95% confidence interval (CI), where positive values indicate an increment of p.m. compared with a.m., and negative values indicate a reduction. Statistical differences were declared significant at P ≤ 0.05, and trends were declared at P ≤ 0.10. Forage sampled in the p.m. had greater (P < 0.001) contents of DM, TNC, SC, starch, and digestibility by 19.8, 16.3, 21.3, 12.1, and 1.0%, while NDF (P < 0.001), ADF (P < 0.001), ADL (P < 0.001), and CP (P < 0.01) were decreased by 1.8, 2.4, 2.4, and 1.7% relative to a.m. forage, respectively (Table 1). Content of EE was not influenced (P > 0.05) by time. The ECM was 3.4% greater (P < 0.001) and the PY tended to be 3.7% greater (P = 0.07) for dairy cows moved in the p.m. compared with those moved in the a.m (Table 2). Dry matter intake, MY, MF, MP, and FY were not affected (P > 0.05) by time. Results indicate that even with considerable improvements of forage nutritive value in the afternoon, the benefits in terms of animal performance are small. Future studies assessing potential benefits of moving animals to a new paddock during the afternoon, should consider statistical power analysis and sample size calculation when designing the experiment. Advancements in technology have ushered in a new era of sensor-based measurement and management of livestock production systems. These sensor-based technologies have the ability to automatically monitor feeding, growth, and enteric emissions for individual animals across confined and extensive production systems. One challenge with sensor-based technologies is the large amount of data generated, which can be difficult to access, process, visualize, and monitor information in real time to ensure equipment is working properly and animals are utilizing it correctly. A solution to this problem is the development of application programming interfaces (APIs) to automate downloading, visualizing, and summarizing datasets generated from precision livestock technology. For this methods paper, we develop three APIs and accompanying processes for rapid data acquisition, visualization, systems tracking, and summary statistics for three technologies (SmartScale, SmartFeed, and GreenFeed) manufactured by C-Lock Inc (Rapid City, SD). Program R markdown documents and example datasets are provided to facilitate greater adoption of these techniques and to further advance precision livestock technology. The methodology presented successfully downloaded data from the cloud and generated a series of visualizations to conduct systems checks, animal usage rates, and calculate summary statistics. These tools will be essential for further adoption of precision technology. There is huge potential to further leverage APIs to incorporate a wide range of datasets such as weather data, animal locations, and sensor data to facilitate decision-making on times scales relevant to researchers and livestock managers. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effect of feeding butyric acid (BA) on growth performance and metabolic indicators in dairy calves. A literature search was conducted to identify in vivo research studies carried out on BA supplementation in dairy calves. Inclusion criteria were in vivo studies, dairy calves, weaning, BA, and inclusion doses of BA. Twenty-three papers with 80 data and 1,132 calves were selected. Data extracted included the number of calves in control and treatment groups and measures of variance of responses (standard error or standard deviation). The response variables were production performance including body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG) feed efficiency (FE), and metabolic indicators including blood glucose and beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) concentrations. A random effect of model was used to examine the raw mean difference and standardized mean difference between BA supplementation and the control group. The analysis was conducted using the metafor package of Rstudio. Butyric acid moderately improved the growth performance and metabolic indicators responses of calves with substantial heterogeneity (59 < I² < 73%, P < 0.01). Final BW and ADG were increased by 2.7 kg and 48.1 g/day, or > 0.6 and > 0.4 standard deviation units (P < 0.05), respectively. However, FE was increased by BA supplementation but not significantly different. For metabolic indicators, glucose concentration was greater with BA supplementation with > 0.4 standard deviation unit, (P < 0.05). However, BA supplementation did not affect the blood concentration of BHB (P > 0.05). In conclusion, the meta-analysis results demonstrated that BA constitutes an important energy source for dairy calves. Cattle health management in the feedlot sector continues to evolve and improve cattle welfare by promoting an understanding of illness and injury to minimize their effects. Many papers have focused on treating individual ill or injured cattle in cattle feeding facilities. However, care, treatment, and outcomes for chronically ill or injured cattle (“chronic cattle”) have received little attention in the literature. The purpose of this descriptive study was to present demographics, diagnoses, and outcomes of chronic cattle in 17 feedlots in the U.S. and Canada and discuss potential risk factors and welfare implications. Individual chronic cattle information and treatment records from 17 feedlots (U.S.: 8; Canada: 9) over 7 yr (2014 – 2020) were retrospectively retrieved from a large feedlot consulting and data-management service (Feedlot Health Management Services, a division of TELUS Agriculture Solutions Inc.). Chronic cattle were defined as those that had spent time in a feedlot’s designated chronic pen. Descriptive results are presented as means ± standard deviations. U.S. feedlots averaged 31,280 ± 23,231 cattle/yr, had an average chronicity rate of 2.24 ± 2.42 % (median 1.53%), and contributed 52,709 chronic cattle to the dataset. Canadian feedlots averaged 21,913 ± 10,497 cattle/yr, had an average chronicity rate of 1.41 ± 0.82% (median 1.10%), and contributed 15,940 chronic cattle to the dataset. U.S. chronic cattle were sourced across all seasons primarily from auctions and ranches, had an average arrival weight of 163 ± 59 kg, and an average days on feed (DOF) of 362 ± 172 d. Canadian chronic cattle were primarily auction-sourced in the fall, weighed 272 ± 95 kg at arrival, and averaged 246 ± 141 DOF. Chronic cattle were treated at least once for respiratory issues (U.S.: 46.3%; Canada: 26.9%), bullers (U.S.: 34.5%; Canada: 5.8%), musculoskeletal issues (U.S.: 2.2%; Canada: 1.4%), lameness (U.S.: 1.7%; Canada: 28.1%), metabolic issues (U.S.: 0.5%; Canada: 4.5%), or other diagnoses (U.S.: 2.2%; Canada: 6.3%), with many cattle treated for multiple issues (U.S.: 12.5%; Canada: 27.0%). Outcomes for chronic cattle were shipped (U.S.: 73.1%; Canada: 52.5%), railed (U.S.: 8.1%; Canada: 20.7%), euthanized (U.S.: 0.7%; Canada: 9.9%) died unassisted (U.S.: 18.1%; Canada: 16.2%), or transferred (U.S.: < 0.1%; Canada: 0.8%). These results are some of the first to describe chronic cattle populations and present interesting trends for further analysis. For example, differences in buller and lameness rates could reflect actual differences but may be artifices of the dataset and feedlot definitions. In the dairy cow, negative energy balance affects milk yield and composition as well as animal health. Studying the effects of negative energy balance on dairy cow milk production is thus essential. Feed restriction (FR) experiments attempting to reproduce negative energy balance by reducing the quantity or quality of the diet were conducted in order to better describe the animal physiology changes. The study of FR is also of interest since with climate change issues, cows may be increasingly faced with periods of drought leading to a shortage of forages. The aim of this article is to review the effects of FR during lactation in dairy cows to obtain a better understanding of metabolism changes and how it affects mammary gland activity and milk production and composition. A total of 41 papers studying FR in lactating cows were used to investigate physiological changes induced by these protocols. FR protocols affect the entire animal metabolism as indicated by changes in blood metabolites such as a decrease in glucose concentration and an increase in non-esterified fatty acid or β-hydroxybutyrate concentrations; hormonal regulations such as a decrease in insulin and insulin-like growth factor I or an increase in growth hormone concentrations. These variations indicated a mobilization of body reserve in most studies. FR also affects mammary gland activity through changes in gene expression and could affect mammary cell turnover through cell apoptosis, cell proliferation, and exfoliation of mammary epithelial cells into milk. Because of modifications of the mammary gland and general metabolism, FR decreases milk production and can affect milk composition with decreased lactose and protein concentrations and increased fat concentration. These effects, however, can vary widely depending on the type of restriction, its duration and intensity, or the stage of lactation in which it takes place. To meet the challenges of an increasing global population and multiple environmental stressors on agricultural production, it is essential to better understand how genotype (G) and environment (E) influence phenotype for traits of economic importance in agriculture. To accomplish this requires interdisciplinary teams consisting of researchers from crop and livestock sciences, genetics, genomics, computational and data sciences, and engineering. Towards this end, in 2020, Congress established the Agricultural Genome to Phenome Initiative (AG2PI). An important objective of this presentation is to encourage strong participation of animal science researchers and industry in ongoing AG2PI activities. The purpose of the initial AG2PI project, awarded to Iowa State University and the Universities of Arizona, Idaho and Nebraska, was to assemble and prepare a community to conduct AG2P research across the plant and animal kingdoms. The AG2PI project aims to: a) identify research gaps and opportunities, b) foster community solutions to these challenges, and c) rapidly disseminate findings for community use. Training workshops, field days, conferences, community surveys, and seed grants have all contributed to these goals. Opinions and ideas from the crop and livestock genetics communities are key to advancing AG2P science and related work. AG2PI has used online community surveys and in-person conferences to gather these and to facilitate transdisciplinary communications. In September 2022, AG2PI held a conference titled "Thinking Big: Visualizing the Future of AG2PI", in which attendees participated in focused small group discussions to identify which agricultural G2P-related topics are most critical for future R&D funding and which may be the most difficult to achieve. These discussions are summarized in a concept paper for the community, shared with USDA-NIFA, and submitted for publication. A follow-up conference was held June 14-15, 2023, in Kansas City, where people working in both the animal and plant genetics research communities and industry stakeholders attended. Outcomes from this conference will be summarized in this presentation, and requests for animal scientists to provide further input will be made. Threonine (Thr) is generally the second limiting amino acid (AA) in growing pig diets, and it has a vital role in supporting intestinal functions and the immune system. Additionally, providing pigs with the correct AA requirements decreases nitrogen excretion and improves growth performance. This study aimed to determine standardized ileal digestibility (SID) Thr requirements for individual post-weaned pigs. Additionally, the Thr supplementation effect on average daily gain (ADG) of weaning and growing [7.3 - 51.5 kg of body weight (BW)] pigs under a sanitary challenge was evaluated. Eleven papers published from 1993 to 2015 composed the dataset used to determine the SID Thr requirement in the nursery phase, and five studies conducted from 2014 to 2020 composed the enteric sanitary challenge dataset. The SID Thr was obtained from publications when available or estimated based on the ingredient composition using EvaPig software. The average individual pig SID Thr requirements were estimated by bootstrapping 1,000 repetitions of a linear-plateau mixed model where all parameters were considered random as a function of the trial code. A general positive-definite matrix was used to represent the between-factors covariance using the nlme package of the R software. The effect of supplementing SID Thr above the requirement to attenuate ADG losses during a challenge was evaluated by an effect size analysis using a mixed model of the R Metafor package. Due to the low number of studies assessing pigs' response to enteric challenges, a P < 0.25 was considered significant. In the post-weaning (14 kg average BW), the estimated ADG was 457 g/d (411 to 493 g/d) as a function of SID Thr individual requirement, which was 4.71 g/d for the average pig, with the least demanding pig requiring 4.4 g/d and the most demanding one requiring 5.1 g/d. For challenged pigs, the across-study heterogeneity was moderate (Higgs index = 36%). Increasing Thr intake by 18% above the estimated requirement attenuated (P = 0.15) ADG losses by 0.7 standard deviations (60 g) compared with pigs fed diets meeting Thr requirements. For pigs in individual precision feeding, the SID Thr requirement is estimated to be 1.03 g per 100 g of ADG for post-weaned pigs. Ionophores are a separate class of nonmedically important antibiotics used in animal production to increase growth rate. Narasin (Skycis; Elanco Animal Health, Greenfield, IN) is an ionophore labeled for increased rate of body weight gain and improved feed efficiency in growing-finishing swine. The mode of action of this ionophore is to increase energy availability by altering volatile fatty acid production in the hindgut in favor of propionate, which is the most efficient product of fermentation. Therefore, a metaregression analysis was conducted to evaluate the effects of narasin inclusion in growing-finishing pig diets to predict average daily gain and feed efficiency. A database was developed that contained 21 papers from 2012 to 2021 representing 308 observations including both individual period data as well as overall trial data. For statistical analysis two models were created. The individual period model considered only data with single continuous narasin feeding periods while the overall trial model considered complete data sets representing periods with and without narasin feeding. Regression model equations were developed with the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS (Version 9.4, SAS institute, Cary, NC). Predictor variables were assessed with a stepwise manual forward selection for model inclusion. Predictor variables were required to provide an improvement of at least 2 Bayesian information criterion units to be included in the final model. For individual period data for G:F, the model selected included concentration of narasin in the feed, ADG and ADFI of the control group not provided narasin, and average BW of the control group categorized into greater than 105 kg or less than 105 kg (Table 1). There were 2 competing models to predict improvement in overall G:F. For model 1, significant predictors included concentration of narasin in feed and ADG of the control group. Model 2 for overall G:F included concentration of narasin in feed, ADG and ADFI of the control group. For the individual period model that predicted ADG, the predictors were concentration of narasin in the feed, ADFI, G:F of the control group and BW category for feeding period. The best fitting ADG model using the overall trial data included concentration of narasin in feed, ADFI and G:F of the control group, and feeding duration categorized as longer than 65 days or shorter than 65 days. Together, these models can be used to predict the response to narasin supplementation in finishing pigs. Based on the results, the overall response to narasin inclusion rate for ADG and G:F is quadratic in nature. Additionally, as ADG and G:F increase, the response to narasin supplementation decreases. In summary, using average values from the database for predictor variables, this meta-analysis demonstrates narasin would be expected to improve overall G:F from 0.74 to 1.13% and ADG from 1 to 3%. Several papers report greater bioavailability of dietary trace mineral fed as organic in pigs compared with inorganic sources. However, only a few studies have tried to assess the variability of the trace mineral bioavailability among different organic sources. Growing barrows (n = 54; initial BW = 28.9 ± 1.3 kg) were used to determine the effects of trace mineral source on growth performance, bones mineralization and mineral status over the entire fattening period (d0-d73). Pigs were blocked by BW and randomly assigned to supplementation of trace minerals as inorganic (ITM) or one of 2 organic sources (OTM): glycine complex (GLY) or amino acids complex (AA). During the two feeding phases (growing: d0-d35; finishing: d35-d73), the experimental diets were supplemented with 5, 35 and 5 mg/kg of Cu, Zn and Mn, respectively. Pigs were fed restricted all through the experimental period. Feed intake was therefore comparable all through the experimental period for all pigs. Growth performance did not differ among the three experimental groups during the growing phase. However, Feed:Gain ratio measured during the finishing period tended to be affected by the dietary treatments (P=0.10). When grouping the GLY and AA pigs, the Feed:Gain ratio measured from d35 to d73 for the OTM pigs was significantly lower compared with ITM pigs (-0.07, P = 0.03). There was no significant effect of the dietary treatment on plasma trace mineral concentrations and alkaline phosphatase activity measured at day 34. At the end of the growing phase, plasma ceruloplasmin activity tended to be greater for the GLY and AA groups in comparison with the ITM pigs (+6.9%, P = 0.06). The zinc deposition in the proximal phalanx was significantly increased when the trace minerals were offered as organic compared with the group ITM (+10.9%, P = 0.06). Zinc content in the liver was greater for the pigs fed the OTM sources compared with the others (+6.0%, P = 0.10). The quantity of copper deposited in the liver did not differ significantly among the 3 trace mineral sources. This study indicates that the total replacement of inorganic Zn, Cu and Mn by organic sources brings benefits in terms of feed efficiency in fattening pigs. A better bioavailability as suggested by greater deposition levels in bone and liver as well as the increased J. Anim. Sci Vol. 101, Suppl. S2 103 circulating ceruloplasmin activity could explain the improvement of performance during the finishing period. The USDA-NIFA is developing a vision for agricultural genomics to phenomics research (AG2P) through two programs. In 2017, the Functional Annotation of Animal Genomes (FAANG) request for proposals was released, which has provided over $9 Million in funding to groups over the past five years to create public resources for the study of regulatory and other functional elements in agriculturally important species. This effort has been extended by other countries who have contributed another $20 Million+ (equivalent). These initial resource-building efforts are providing extensive new epigenetic data that are used to better understand the function of animal genomes and to enhance animal genetic improvement. However, such research demonstrates new infrastructure is needed across the agricultural enterprise to predict phenotypes from genome information. Many problematic outcomes in agricultural and food systems have important dynamic dimensions and arise due to underlying system structure. Thus, understanding the linkages between system structure and dynamic behavior often is important for the design and implementation of interventions to achieve sustained improvements. System dynamics (SD) modeling represents system structure using stock-flow-feedback structures expressed as systems of differential equations solved by numerical integration methods. System dynamics methods also encompass a broader methodological approach that emphasizes model structural development and data inputs to replicate one of a limited number of problematic behavioral modes, anticipates dynamic complexity, and focuses on feedback processes arising from endogenous system elements. This paper highlights the process of SD modeling using 2 examples from animal agriculture at different scales. A dynamic version of the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS) that represents outcomes for an individual dairy cow is formulated as an SD model illustrates the benefits of the SD approach in modeling rumen fill and animal performance. At a very different scale, an SD model of the Brazilian dairy supply chain (farms, processing, and consumers) illustrates the country-level impacts of efforts to improve cow productivity and how impacts differ if productivity improvement occurs on small farms rather than large farms. Precision feeding (PF) with the daily mixing of 2 diets with different lysine content (high (H) or low (L)) was previously reported for growing pigs to reduce protein intake and N excretion compared with a conventional feeding (CF) based on a single diet (C). Using a simulation approach based on farm data, the objective of the present paper was to describe and evaluate a decision support system for the PF of gestating sows allowing the daily distribution of a tailored ration to each sow. Two datasets, 1 of 2,511 gestations (farm A) and 1 of 2,528 gestations (farm B), reporting sows' characteristics at insemination and objectives at farrowing were used as inputs for a Python model. This model, mainly based on InraPorc, calculates the nutrient requirements of each sow over gestation and simulates the impact of PF in comparison to CF. Simulated diets L, H, and C contained 3.0, 6.5, and 4.8 g/kg of standardized ileal digestible lysine (SID Lys) and 2.0, 3.3, and 2.5 g/kg of standardized total tract digestible phosphorus (STTD-P), respectively. The influence of farm, parity, gestation week, and their interactions, on calculated SID Lys and STTD-P requirements was analyzed applying a mixed model. The calculated SID Lys and STTD-P requirements increased markedly in the last third of gestation (P < 0.01) and were higher for primiparous than for multiparous sows, unless after week 14 for STTD-P requirement. The calculated SID AA and mineral requirements were lower for farm B than farm A (respectively, 2.94 vs. 3.08 g/kg for SID Lys and 1.30 vs. 1.35 g/kg for STTD-P, P < 0.01). On average, feed L represented 86% and 92% of the feed projected to be delivered by the PF strategy in farms A and B, respectively. Compared to CF, average calculated dietary SID Lys content was lowered by 27% and 32% with PF, for farms A and B, respectively, while average calculated dietary phosphorus content was lowered by 13% and 16%. The simulated proportions of sows in excess and deficient in SID Lys were reduced with PF. Compared to CF, the PF strategy allowed for a 3.6% reduction in simulated feed cost per sow during gestation, and reduced nitrogen and phosphorus intake (by 11.0% and 13.8%, respectively) and excretion (by 16.7% and 15.4%, respectively). To conclude, these simulations indicate that PF of gestating sow appears to be relevant to meet the amino acid requirement while reducing feed cost, and supplies and excretion of nitrogen and phosphorus. Traditional feed composition tables have been a useful tool in the field of animal nutrition throughout the last 70 yr. The objective of this paper is to discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with creating large feed ingredient composition tables. This manuscript will focus on three topics discussed during the National Animal Nutrition Program (NANP) Symposium in ruminant and nonruminant nutrition carried out at the American Society of Animal Science Annual Meeting in Austin, TX, on July 11, 2019, namely: 1) Using large datasets in feed composition tables and the importance of standard deviation in nutrient composition as well as different methods to obtain accurate standard deviation values, 2) Discussing the importance of fiber in animal nutrition and the evaluation of different methods to estimate fiber content of feeds, and 3) Description of novel feed sources, such as insects, algae, and single-cell protein, and challenges associated with the inclusion of such feeds in feed composition tables. Development of feed composition tables presents important challenges. For instance, large datasets provided by different sources tend to have errors and misclassifications. In addition, data are in different file formats, data structures, and feed classifications. Managing such large databases requires computers with high processing power and software that are also able to run automated procedures to consolidate files, to screen out outlying observations, and to detect misclassified records. Complex algorithms are necessary to identify misclassified samples and outliers aimed to obtain accurate nutrient composition values. Fiber is an important nutrient for both monogastrics and ruminants. Currently, there are several methods available to estimate the fiber content of feeds. However, many of them do not estimate fiber accurately. Total dietary fiber should be used as the standard method to estimate fiber concentrations in feeds. Finally, novel feed sources are a viable option to replace traditional feed sources from a nutritional perspective, but the large variation in nutrient composition among batches makes it difficult to provide reliable nutrient information to be tabulated. Further communication and cooperation among different stakeholders in the animal industry are required to produce reliable data on the nutrient composition to be published in feed composition tables. Genetic improvement of animals plays an important role in improving the economic and environmental sustainability of livestock production systems. This paper proposes a method to incorporate mitigation of environmental impacts and risk preferences of producers into a breeding objective via economic values (EV s). The paper assesses the effects of using these alternative EVs of breeding goal traits on discounted economic response to selection and on environmental impacts at commercial farm level. The application focuses on a Brazilian pig production system. Separate dam- and sire-line breeding programs that supply parents in a 3-tier production system for producing crossbreds (fattening pigs) at commercial level were assumed. Using EVs that are derived from utility functions by incorporating risk aversion increases the cumulative discounted economic response to selection in sire-line selection (6%) while reducing response in dam-line selection (12%) compared with the use of traditional EVs. The use of EVs that include environmental costs increases the cumulative discounted social response to selection in both dam-line (5%) and sire-line (10%) selections. Emission of greenhouse gases, and excretion of nitrogen and phosphorus can be reduced more with genetic improvements of production traits than reproduction traits for the typical Brazilian farrow-to-finish pig farm. Reductions in environmental impacts do not, however, depend on the use of the different EVs (i.e. with and without taking into account environmental costs and risk). Both environmental costs and risk preferences of producers need to be considered in sire-line selection, and only environmental costs in dam-line selection to improve, at the same time, the economic and environmental sustainability of the Brazilian pig production system. The objective of this paper is to report observations from a 10-week summer training program on Data Management in Animal and Plant Sciences. A total of six undergraduate students from three universities in the Texas A&M University System [Texas A&M University (TAMU)-College Station, TAMUKingsville, and TAMU-Corpus Christi] representing disciplines of Animal Science, Plant Science, and Computer Science learned handling and interpretation of sensor-based data derived from both animal sensors and UAV images of plant fields. Students attended weekly training sessions on data collection, management, processing, and visualization software including ArcGIS, MySQL and power BI. In addition, students also worked as a team and developed a database project and gave an oral presentation on their team project. On the pretraining survey, two students indicated that they had a background in animal science, two students indicated a background in plant science, one student in computer science, and one student with experience in spatial data. To begin with, the students had a mean score of 4.3 (range 0-8; on a scale of 0-10) for knowledge of data management in agriculture. One third of the students indicated that they did not have data handling experience, and one half of the students had some data analysis experience whereas one student indicated partial experience of working with data. In general, students indicated that they were very satisfied with the internship experience. On a scale of 0-10, the mean satisfaction score was 8.75 (range 7.5-10). Students indicated that they were more confident to work with and talk about data from animal systems (mean 8.5; range 7-10) and plant systems (mean = 8.4; range = 7-10). All students agreed that they learned at least one new concept related to animal and plant data ecosystems. Students indicated that the program was a good start for understanding the overall data architecture, indicated progress on data handling and thought helpful to understand opportunities in agriculture. All students agreed that their understanding of data management in agriculture changed significantly because of the course. Consequently, four students indicated that they were interested in career opportunities related to data in agriculture whereas two students indicated their interest in application of the developed tools for the on-farm use. When evaluating effect of the cross disciplinary training, students agreed that the training was helpful in learning concepts outside of their own discipline with the mean score 9.4(range 8-10) on a scale of 0-10. All students indicated that they learned team management skills and skills working with people that are different from their own. Students suggested improvement on the communications, prerecorded videos, in-person meetings, weekly reporting reviews in the future iterations for students to benefit more from the program. An accurate understanding of heat stress (HS) temperatures and phenotypes that indicate HS tolerance is necessary to improve swine HS resilience. Therefore, the study objectives were 1) to identify phenotypes indicative of HS tolerance, and 2) to determine moderate and severe HS threshold temperatures in lactating sows. Multiparous (4.10 ± 1.48) lactating sows and their litters (11.10 ± 2.33 piglets/litter) were housed in naturally ventilated (n = 1,015) or mechanically ventilated (n = 630) barns at a commercial sow farm in Maple Hill, NC, USA between June 9 and July 24, 2021. In-barn dry bulb temperatures (TDB) and relative humidity were continuously recorded for naturally ventilated (26.38 ± 1.21 °C and 83.38 ± 5.40%, respectively) and mechanically ventilated (26.91 ± 1.80 °C and 77.13 ± 7.06%, respectively) barns using data recorders. Sows were phenotyped between lactation days 11.28 ± 3.08 and 14.25 ± 3.26. Thermoregulatory measures were obtained daily at 0800, 1200, 1600, and 2000 h and included respiration rate, and ear, shoulder, rump, and tail skin temperatures. Vaginal temperatures (TV) were recorded in 10 min intervals using data recorders. Anatomical characteristics were recorded, including ear area and length, visual and caliper-assessed body condition scores, and a visually assessed and subjective hair density score. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED to evaluate the temporal pattern of thermoregulatory responses, phenotype correlations were based on mixed model analyses, and moderate and severe HS inflection points were established by fitting TV as the dependent variable in a cubic function against TDB. Statistical analyses were conducted separately for sows housed in mechanically or naturally ventilated barns because the sow groups were not housed in each facility type simultaneously. The temporal pattern of thermoregulatory responses was similar for naturally and mechanically ventilated barns and several thermoregulatory and anatomical measures were significantly correlated with one another (P < 0.05), including all anatomical measures as well as skin temperatures, respiration rates, and TV. For sows housed in naturally and mechanically ventilated facilities, moderate HS threshold TDB were 27.36 and 26.69 °C, respectively, and severe HS threshold TDB were 29.45 and 30.60 °C, respectively. This article provides a science-based, data-driven perspective on the relevance of the beef herd in the U.S. to our society and greenhouse gas (GHG) contribution to climate change. Cattle operations are subject to criticism for their environmental burden, often based on incomplete information disseminated about their social, economic, nutritional, and ecological benefits and detriments. The 2019 data published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reported that U.S. beef cattle emitted 22.6% of the total agricultural emissions, representing about 2.2% of the total anthropogenic emissions of CO2 equivalent (CO2e). Simulations from a computer model developed to address global energy and climate challenges, set to use extreme improvements in livestock and crop production systems, indicated a potential reduction in global CO2e emissions of 4.6% but without significant enhancement in the temperature change by 2030. There are many natural and anthropogenic sources of CH4 emissions. Contrary to the increased contribution of peatlands and water reservoirs to atmospheric CO2e, the steady decrease in the U.S. cattle population is estimated to have reduced its methane (CH4) emissions by about 30% from 1975 to 2021. This CH4 emission deacceleration of 2.46 Mt CO2 e/yr2 might be even more significant than reported. Many opportunities exist to mitigate CH4 emissions of beef production, leading to a realistic prospect of a 5% to 15% reduction in the short term after considering the overlapping impacts of combined strategies. Reduction strategies include feeding synthetic chemicals that inactivate the methyl-coenzyme M reductase (the enzyme that catalyzes the last step of methanogenesis in the rumen), red seaweed or algae extracts, ionophore antibiotics, phytochemicals (e.g., condensed tannins and essential oils), and other nutritional manipulations. The proposed net-zero concept might not solve the global warming problem because it will only balance future anthropogenic GHG emissions with anthropogenic removals, leaving global warming on a standby state. Recommendations for consuming red meat products should consider human nutrition, health, and disease and remain independent of controversial evidence of causational relationships with perceived negative environmental impacts of beef production that are not based on scientific data. Physical traits that improve welfare and disease outcomes for sheep are becoming increasingly important due to both increased climate challenges and societal expectations. Such traits include tail length, the amount of skin (vs. wool) on the underside of the tail, and the area of no-wool (hair) on the belly and breech areas (surrounding the anus) of the animal. An industry dataset consisting of records from individual stud breeders and industry progeny tests was available to estimate the genetic parameters associated with these traits and to investigate the potential for within-breed genetic selection. The heritability estimate for tail length was 0.68 ± 0.01 when breed was not fitted, and 0.63 ± 0.01 when breed was fitted. Similar trends were observed for breech and belly bareness which had heritability estimates around 0.50 (± 0.01). The estimates for these bareness traits are both higher than previous reports from animals of the same age. There was, however, between breed variation in the starting point for these traits, with some breeds having significantly longer tails and a wooly breech and belly, and limited variability. Overall, the results of this study show that flocks exhibiting some variation will be able to make rapid genetic progress in selecting for bareness and tail length traits, and therefore have the potential to make progress towards a sheep that is easier to look after and suffers fewer welfare insults. For those breeds that showed limited within-breed variation, outcrossing may be required to introduce genotypes that exhibit shorter tail length and bareness of belly and breech to increase the rate of genetic gain. Most of the metabolizable energy that a cow uses during a production year is for maintenance; however, less is known about the heritability of maintenance compared to other traits that can be measured directly. Feed intake is a heritable trait in the mature cow and most of the feed consumed is used for maintenance. We hypothesized that maintenance energy was a heritable trait. Individual feed intake was measured for 84 or 85 d on 5 yr old pregnant cows (N = 887) from a pedigreed population of cattle that represent prominent breeds in the United States. Phenotypic mean (± SD) values were 654 ± 68 kg for cow body weight, 0.21 ± 0.24 kg/d for average daily gain, and 175 ± 17 d for midpoint fetal age. Dry matter intake averaged (± SD) 10.84 ± 1.41 kg/d. Metabolizable energy for maintenance was estimated by subtracting the metabolizable energy used for conceptus growth and tissue accretion from metabolizable energy intake. Metabolizable energy for maintenance averaged (± SD) 139 ± 18 ME kcal/d/BW kg0.75 and had a heritability of 0.31 ± 0.11. This study aimed to determine if supplementation of oxidized-beta carotene (OxC-Beta) improved sow reproductive performance, litter growth performance, vitamin A status, and ability to alter immune cells abundance in sows and piglets, subsequent litter performance, and nursery growth performance. On approximately day 60 of gestation and through the lactation period, 194 sows (blocked by parity) were assigned to a common gestation diet or the common diet supplemented with 80 ppm oxidized beta-carotene (OxC-Beta, Aviagen, Ottawa, ON, Canada). A subset of sows (N = 54 per treatment) were sampled for blood and body weight recorded at the beginning of the study, farrowing, and weaning. A blood sample was taken from a subset of piglets at birth and weaning, and all piglet weights were recorded. Blood was analyzed for vitamin A as retinol concentrations and immunoglobulin G (IgG) and immunoglobulin M (IgG) levels were assessed from the sow’s blood. Twelve pigs (N = 6 per treatment) were euthanized at birth and weaning. The livers were collected and analyzed for the Kupffer cell phagocytic activity through flow cytometry. Whole blood was analyzed via flow cytometry for cluster of differentiation (CD335, CD8, and CD4). Colostrum during farrowing and milk at weaning were analyzed for IgG and IgA concentrations. Data were analyzed via SAS 9.4 using MIXED and frequency procedures where appropriate. No differences (P > 0.05) between dietary treatments were observed in sow reproductive performance, feed intake, wean to estrus interval, or piglet growth performance. No differences (P > 0.05) were observed in the plasma or liver for vitamin A. No differences (P > 0.05) were observed in the composition of the colostrum or milk. No immunological differences (P > 0.05) were observed in the piglets’ liver and blood or sow antibodies in colostrum and milk. The supplementation of OxC-Beta did (P < 0.05) decrease IgM and tended (P < 0.10) to decrease IgG in sow plasma. No differences (P > 0.05) were observed in the reproductive performance of subsequent litter information from the sows. Gilt litter weaning weight and feed intake were reduced (P < 0.05) compared to sow performance. In conclusion, the supplementation of OxCBeta at 80 ppm from day 60 of gestation through lactation does not affect the reproductive performance of sows, litter growth performance, vitamin A status, piglet immune status, and antibodies or composition in colostrum and milk. Red clover produces isoflavones, including biochanin A, which have been shown to have microbiological effects on the rumen while also promoting growth in beef cattle. The objective was to determine if supplementation of biochanin A via red clover hay would produce similar effects on the rumen microbiota and improve growth performance of lambs. Twenty-four individually-housed Polypay ram lambs (initial age: 114 ± 1 d; initial weight: 38.1 ± 0.59 kg) were randomly assigned to one of three experimental diets (85:15 concentrate:roughage ratio; N = 8 rams/ treatment): CON—control diet in which the roughage component (15.0%, w/w, of the total diet) consisted of orchardgrass hay; 7.5-RC—red clover hay substituted for half (7.5%, w/w, of the total diet) of the roughage component; and 15-RC—the entire roughage component (15.0%, w/w, of the total diet) consisted of red clover hay. Feed intake and weight gain were measured at 14-d intervals for the duration of the 56-d trial, and rumen microbiological measures were assessed on days 0, 28, and 56. Red clover supplementation impacted growth performance of ram lambs. Average daily gains (ADG) were greater in ram lambs supplemented with red clover hay (7.5-RC and 15-RC) than for those fed the CON diet (P < 0.05). Conversely, dry matter intake (DMI) was lower in 7.5-RC and 15-RC than for CON lambs (P = 0.03). Differences in ADG and DMI resulted in greater feed efficiency in ram lambs supplemented with red clover hay (both 7.5-RC and 15-RC) compared to CON (P < 0.01). Rumen microbiota were also altered by red clover supplementation. The total viable number of hyper-ammonia-producing bacteria in 7.5-RC and 15-RC decreased over the course of the experiment and were lower than CON by day 28 (P ≤ 0.04). Amylolytic bacteria were also lower in 15-RC than in CON (P = 0.03), with a trend for lower amylolytic bacteria in 7.5-RC (P = 0.08). In contrast, there was tendency for greater cellulolytic bacteria in red clover supplemented lambs than in CON (P = 0.06). Red clover supplementation also increased fiber utilization, with greater ex vivo dry matter digestibility of hay for both 7.5-RC and 15-RC compared to CON by day 28 (P < 0.03). Results of this study indicate that low levels of red clover hay can elicit production benefits in high-concentrate lamb finishing systems through alteration of the rumen microbiota. This study aimed to determine the efficacy of a bacterial 6-phytase (Buttiauxella spp.) supplemented beyond traditional dose levels based on jejunal mucosa-associated microbiota, apparent ileal digestibility (AID), intestinal health and bone parameters, and growth performance of nursery pigs. Seventy-two weaned pigs (36 barrows and 36 gilts at 21 d of age with 5.8 ± 0.5 kg BW) were allotted to six treatments based on randomized complete block design with sex and initial BW as blocks and fed in three dietary phases (phase 1 for 14 d, phase 2 for 10 d, and phase 3 for 14 d). The treatments included a negative control (NC) diet without phytase formulated meeting nutrient requirements by NRC and the other five treatments were deficient in calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) by 0.12% with increasing levels of a bacterial 6-phytase (0, 500, 1,000, 2,000, and 5,000 FTU/kg feed). Titanium dioxide (0.4%) was added to phase 3 diets as an indigestible marker to measure AID of nutrients. On day 45, all pigs were euthanized to collect ileal digesta to measure AID, the third metacarpus to measure bone parameters, and jejunal mucosa to evaluate intestinal health and microbiota. Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure for polynomial contrasts and the NLMIXED procedure for broken line analysis using the SAS 9.4. Broken line analysis demonstrated that 948 FTU/kg feed increased (P < 0.05) the ADG and the bone P content. Increasing phytase supplementation increased (linear, P < 0.05) AID of CP, bone P, and ash content. Increasing phytase supplementation reduced (P < 0.05) the fecal score during phases 2 and 3. Broken line analysis demonstrated that 1,889 FTU/kg feed increased (P < 0.05) bone breaking strength. Increasing phytase supplementation (PC vs. Phy) increased (P < 0.05) AID of ether extract (EE) and P. The supplementation of phytase at 2,000 FTU/kg feed tended (P = 0.087) to reduce the relative abundance of Prevotellaceae. In conclusion, the supplementation of a bacterial 6-phytase beyond traditional dose levels improved bone breaking strength, bone ash, and P content, AID of CP, EE, and P, and growth performance of nursery pigs with reduced relative abundance of Bacteroidetes specifically Prevotellaceae in the jejunal mucosa. Finishing pigs (N = 224; 28.66 ± 1.90 kg bodyweight) were randomly assigned across 56 pens of either four barrows or gilts, and assigned to one of four diets: control (7,656 IU vitamin A/kg), control supplemented with vitamin A (4.36 ppm, Rovimix A 1000, DSM, Parsippany, NJ, USA), control supplemented with beta-carotene (163.28 ppm, Rovimix β-Carotene 10%, DSM, Parsippany), or control supplemented with oxidized beta-carotene (40 ppm; 10% active ingredient, Avivagen, Ottawa, ON, Canada). Pigs and feeder weights were obtained at the start of the study (d 0), and end of each phase (d 21, 42, and 63). A subset of gilts had a blood sample taken via jugular venipuncture on d 0, a blood sample and vaccinations of Lawsonia intracellularis and porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) on d 18, a blood sample and booster vaccination of PCV2 on d 39, a blood sample on day 60, and a final blood sample on day 63. Gilts were euthanized at the end of the study to obtain a liver (entire right lobe) and a jejunum sample (15.24 cm at 10% of length). Additionally, the second and fourth right anterior mammary were collected to assess anterior mammary tissues. Data were analyzed in SAS 9.4 (Statistical Analysis System, Cary, NC) via GLIMMIX procedure. Oxidized beta-carotene supplementation increased (P = 0.02) ADG across phases over vitamin A supplementation, although there were no differences (P = 0.18) in the body weight of pigs. There was no effect (P > 0.05) of diet on plasma or hepatic retinol, IgG or IgM levels, or immune cell presence in developing mammary tissue. Supplemented vitamin A tended (P = 0.05) to increase the mRNA abundance of retinol binding protein in the jejunum, but other mRNA abundance for genes (alcohol dehydrogenase class 1, lecithin retinol acyltransferase phosphatidylcholine-retinol O-acyltransferase, and beta-carotene oxygenase 1) were not affected (P > 0.05) by dietary treatments. A diet by time interaction (P = 0.04) was noted for the circovirus S/P ratio, where vitamin A supplementation had the best ratio compared to other diets. Analyzed titer levels for the circovirus vaccine had an interaction (P < 0.01) for diet by time, where vitamin A supplementation had the highest titer at the end of the study. Thus, pigs supplemented with oxidized beta-carotene had an improved ADG over vitamin A supplemented pigs, but pigs supplemented with vitamin A seemed to have an improved immune status. An experiment was conducted to determine how feeding calcium (Ca)-deficient diet would affect gastrointestinal pH and volatile fatty acids (VFAs), Ca digestibility, bone mineral density (BMD), and performance in nursery pigs; and if supplementation of nondigestible oligosaccharides would affect these same parameters. In total, 240 weaned pigs (BW = 7.1 kg) were placed into 80 pens with 3 pigs/pen. The eight dietary treatments consisted of: 1) positive control (PC, 0.83% total Ca), 2) negative control (NC, 0.50% total Ca), 3 and 4) NC + 5% or 7.5% soluble corn fiber (SCF), 5 and 6) NC + 5% or 7.5% resistant corn starch (rCS), 7 and 8) NC + 0.25% or 0.50% fat-protected butyrate (pBRT). Pigs were ad libitum fed the dietary treatments for 21 d to determine average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI) and gain:feed ratio (GF) with a fecal sample collected from each pen to determine Ca digestibility using acid insoluble ash as the dietary marker, with 1 pig/pen euthanized on d 21 for collection of ileal and colon contents and the left humerus. Pigs fed the NC diet had a lower colonic pH compared with pigs fed the PC (P = 0.06) but no effect on total VFA was observed (P > 0.10). Pigs fed diets containing SCF and rCS had lower colonic pH and total VFA compared to pigs fed the NC diet (P ≤ 0.05). Pigs fed diets containing pBRT had greater colonic total VFA compared to pigs fed the NC diet (P ≤ 0.07), but no difference in colonic pH was observed (P > 0.10). Pigs fed the NC diet had a greater Ca digestibility compared to pigs fed the PC (P ≤ 0.01), with no treatment to the NC having any effect on Ca digestibility compared to pigs fed the NC (P > 0.10). There was no effect of dietary Ca level on BMD and no overall addition of feeding SCF, rCS, or pBRT on BMD compared to pigs fed the NC (P > 0.10). There was no impact on pig ADG, ADFI, or GF by reducing dietary Ca by 40% (i.e., pigs fed the NC) compared to pigs fed the PC (P > 0.10). Relative to pigs fed the NC, there was no overall effect of SCF, rCS, or pBRT on ADG, ADFI, or GF (P > 0.10). In conclusion, feeding young pigs a Ca-deficient diet reduced colonic pH, increased digestibility of Ca, but had no impact on bone mineralization or overall pig performance. Supplementation of nondigestible oligosaccharides pr protected butyrate had either no effect or an inconsistent effect on colonic pH, Ca, or PHOS digestibility, bone mineralization, or overall pig performance. This study was aimed to first, determine the nutritional value of Berberis vulgaris leaf (BVL), using in vitro gas production technique and second, determine the effect of replacing alfalfa hay (AH) with BVL in lamb diets on nutrient intake, performance, and carcass traits. In vitro rumen gas kinetics and fermentation profile were assessed using three fistulated lambs and 96 h incubation of samples. For the in vivo trial, 21 Baluchi male lambs of 5–6 mo of age and 30.6 ± 1.28 kg body weight (BW) were randomly assigned to three treatment diets containing BVL at 0% (CTRL), 7.5% (BVL7.5), and 15% (BVL15) of the total dry matter (DM) inclusion. The study lasted 84 d, which included 14 d for adaption and 70 d for sample collection. In vitro results showed that BVL had lower gas yield (GY24, P ≤ 0.05) than AH. In vivo trial revealed that DM intake increased with BVL15 followed by BVL7.5 (P ≤ 0.05). Digestibility of DM, organic matter, NDF, and acid detergent lignin decreased (P ≤ 0.05) with BVL15. Total weight gain, average daily gain, hot carcass weight, and cold carcass weight were decreased (P ≤ 0.05) with BVL15, however, no differences were observed between the BVL7.5 and CTRL groups. Feed cost per kilogram BW gain decrease (P ≤ 0.05) by increasing the inclusion levels of BVL. Water buffalo milk is a reliable source of high-quality nutrients; however, the susceptibility of mastitis in buffaloes must be taken into consideration. An animal with somatic cell count (SCC) of greater than 250,000 cells/mL is reported to be likely to have mastitis which has serious adverse effects on animal health, reproduction, milk yield, and milk quality. Type traits (TTs) of water buffalo can affect SCC in animal milk to some extent, but few reports on the correlation between SCC and TTs are available. In this study, a total of 1908 records collected from 678 water buffaloes were investigated. The general linear model was used to identify factors associated with phenotypic variation of the somatic cell score (SCS) trait, including parity, lactation length, calving year, and calving season as fixed effects. Using PROC CORR analysis method, taking calving year and lactation length as covariates, the correlation co-efficient between TT and SCS was obtained. Our results showed that correlation co-efficients between the 45 TTs with SCS ranged from 0.003 to 0.443 (degree of correlation). The correlation between udder traits and SCS was greater than that between body structure traits and SCS. Among udder traits, distance between teats (including front and rear teat distance [r = 0.308], front teat distance [r = 0.211], and teat crossing distance [r = 0.412]) and teat circumference (r = 0.443) had the highest correlation with SCS, followed by the leg traits including rear leg height (r = −0.354) and hock bend angle (r = −0.170). Animal with high rear legs (>48 cm) and short teat crossing distance (<17 cm), and narrow teat circumference (<11 cm) exhibited low SCS. Using four nonlinear models (Von Bertalanffy, Brody, Logistic, and Gompertz), the optimal growth curves of the TTs highly correlated with the SCS (rear leg height and teat crossing distance) were fitted, and the correction co-efficients of these two TTs rear leg height and teat crossing distance of animal from young age (2 mo old) to first lactation (35 mo old) were attained for establishment of early selection method for water buffaloes with low SCS. This study provides theoretical support for early selection of low-SCS water buffaloes and lays a foundation for improving milk quality and promoting healthy development of water buffalo’s dairy industry. Stressors such as lack of access to feed, hot temperatures, transportation, and pen changes can cause impairment of ruminal and intestinal barrier function, also known as “leaky gut”. Despite the known benefits of some nutritional approaches during periods of stress, little is understood regarding the underlying mechanisms, especially in dairy cows. We evaluated the effect of feeding a Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation product (SCFP; NutriTek, Diamond V, Cedar Rapids, IA) on the ileal transcriptome in response to feed restriction (FR), an established model to induce intestinal barrier dysfunction. Multiparous cows [97.1 ± 7.6 days in milk (DIM); n = 5/group] fed a control diet or control plus 19 g/d SCFP for 9 wk were subjected to an FR challenge for 5 d during which they were fed 40% of their ad libitum intake from the 7 d before FR. All cows were slaughtered at the end of FR, and ileal scrapping RNA was used for RNAseq (NovaSeq 6000, 100 bp read length). Statistical analysis was performed in R and bioinformatics using the KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) and GO databases. One thousand six hundred and ninety-six differentially expressed genes (DEG; FDR-adjusted P ≤ 0.10) were detected in SCFP vs. control, with 451 upregulated and 1,245 downregulated. “Mucin type O-glycan biosynthesis” was the top downregulated KEGG pathway due to downregulation of genes catalyzing glycosylation of mucins (GCNT3, GALNT5, B3GNT3, GALNT18, and GALNT14). An overall downregulation of cell and tissue structure genes (e.g., extracellular matrix proteins) associated with collagen (COL6A1, COL1A1, COL4A1, COL1A2, and COL6A2), laminin (LAMB2), and integrins (ITGA8, ITGA2, and ITGA5) also were detected with SCFP. A subset of DEG enriched in the GO term “extracellular exosome” and “extracellular space”. Chemokines within “Cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction pathways” such as CCL16, CCL21, CCL14, CXCL12, and CXCL14 were downregulated by SCFP. The “Glutathione metabolism” pathway was upregulated by SCFP, including GSTA1 and RRM2B among the top upregulated genes, and GSTM1 and GPX8 as top downregulated genes. There were 9 homeobox transcription factors among the top 50 predicted transcription factors using the RNAseq DEG dataset, underscoring the importance of cell differentiation as a potential target of dietary SCFP. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of a second injection of iron dextran administered on days 6 to 8 of age. A total of 144 crossbred pigs (equal barrows and gilts; initial age 6 to 8 d; initial body weight [BW] = 2.86 ± 0.01 kg) were assigned to either the control (CON) or an added-injection treatment (+Fe). Pigs were paired by sex and BW within a litter and randomly assigned to the iron treatment within each pair. All pigs had received an initial intramuscular (IM) injection of iron dextran (200 mg Fe) <24 h after birth. Pigs assigned to the +Fe treatment received a second IM injection of iron dextran (200 mg Fe) on days 6 to 8. All pigs were weaned at 22 to 25 d, housed 6 pigs/pen, and received a common corn–soybean meal diet. BW and feed disappearance were recorded every 2 wk. Hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations were measured at birth, initiation of experiment (days 6 to 8), weaning, and the end of the nursery and end of the study. At the end of the study, 1 pig/pen (n = 12 pigs/treatment), closest to the pen mean was selected and slaughtered for carcass characteristic measures. The individual pig served as the experimental unit for BW, Hb, average daily gain (ADG), and carcass characteristic data whereas the pen served as the experimental unit for average daily feed intake, and gain/feed ratio data. The +Fe pigs had a greater Hb at weaning (13.1 vs. 10.7 g/dL, respectively; P < 0.01) and end of the nursery (12.1 vs. 11.7 g/dL, respectively; P = 0.01) compared to CON pigs. During the finisher period, +Fe pigs had a greater ADG (0.94 vs. 0.91 kg, respectively; P = 0.05) compared to CON pigs. Overall, pigs receiving the second iron injection had an ~4% increase in ADG (P = 0.04) from weaning to the end of study. The cumulative improvement in ADG from weaning to the end of study observed for +Fe group resulted in +Fe pigs having a heavier BW at the end of the study (~3 kg; P = 0.04). Following slaughter, +Fe pigs had ~7.2% heavier trimmed loin (P = 0.04) compared to the CON pigs. In conclusion, administering a second iron injection resulted in greater Hb at weaning and the end of the nursery as well as improved growth performance from weaning to the end of study weight and increased carcass weight at slaughter. Feeding a Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation product (SCFP; NutriTek, Diamond V, Cedar Rapids, IA) during periods of metabolic stress is beneficial to the health of dairy cows partially through its effect on the gut microbiota. Whether SCFP alters the ileal microbiota in lactating cows during intestinal challenges induced by feed restriction (FR) is not known. We used 16S rRNA sequencing to assess if feeding SCFP during FR to induce gut barrier dysfunction alters microbiota profiles in the ileum. The mRNA abundance of key genes associated with tissue structures and immunity was also detected. Multiparous cows (97.1 ± 7.6 days in milk (DIM); n = 7 per treatment) fed a control diet or the control plus 19 g/d NutriTek for 9 wk were subjected to an FR challenge for 5 d, during which they were fed 40% of their ad libitum intake from the 7 d before FR. All cows were slaughtered at the end of FR. DNA extracted from ileal digesta was subjected to PacBio Full-Length 16S rRNA gene sequencing. High-quality amplicon sequence analyses were performed with Targeted Amplicon Diversity Analysis and MicrobiomeAnalyst. Functional analysis was performed and analyzed using PICRUSt and STAMP. Feeding SCFP did not (P > 0.05) alter dry matter intake, milk yield, or milk components during FR. In addition, SCFP supplementation tended (P = 0.07) to increase the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Bifidobacterium animalis. Compared with controls, feeding SCFP increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillales (P = 0.03). Gluconokinase, oligosaccharide reducing-end xylanase, and 3-hydroxy acid dehydrogenase were among the enzymes overrepresented (P < 0.05) in response to feeding SCFP. Cows fed SCFP had a lower representation of adenosylcobalamin biosynthesis I (early cobalt insertion) and pyrimidine deoxyribonucleotides de novo biosynthesis III (P < 0.05). Subsets of the Firmicutes genus, Bacteroidota phylum, and Treponema genus were correlated with the mRNA abundance of genes associated with ileal integrity (GCNT3, GALNT5, B3GNT3, FN1, ITGA2, LAMB2) and inflammation (AOX1, GPX8, CXCL12, CXCL14, CCL4, SAA3). The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary linoleic acid level and the ratio of linoleic acid:linolenic acid (LA:ALA) on the growth performance, expression of genes associated with lipid metabolism, and inflammatory status of grow–finish pigs. A total of 300 growing pigs (body weight [BW] = 41.1 ± 6.3 kg) were randomly assigned to either a high (30 g/kg; HLA) or low (15 g/kg; LLA) dietary linoleic acid level with a high (23:1; HR), moderate (13:1; MR) or low (4:1; LR) dietary LA:ALA in a 2 × 3 factorial design. Diets were fed across three 28-d phases and were balanced for dietary metabolizable energy. Pigs were housed five pigs per pen in single-sex pens. Blood samples were collected on days 0, 21, 42, and 84, and synovial fluid was collected from the hock joint on days 0 and 84 for inflammatory marker analysis. Data were analyzed as repeated measures using PROC MIXED (SAS 9.4) with initial BW as a covariate, pen as the experimental unit, and LA level, LA:ALA, sex, phases, and their interactions as fixed effects. Compared to HLA, LLA pigs tended to have increased BW at days 56 and 84 (P = 0.088). There was no effect of LA × LA:ALA for growth performance. For the overall days 0 to 84 growth period, pigs fed HR had increased ADG compared to MR, with pigs receiving LR performing intermediate of MR and HR. Gilts receiving HR diets had increased day 84 BW compared to gilts receiving the low and moderate LA:ALA (P = 0.006), which was a result of improved overall days 0 to 84 ADG compared to gilts receiving the MR diets (P = 0.023). Barrows fed LR had improved BW on day 56 compared to MR and HR and higher final BW compared to HR, with MR performing intermediately (P = 0.006). This was a result of greater days 0 to 84 ADG (P = 0.023). Overall, C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα), and interleukin-6 were reduced in the plasma of pigs over time (P ≤ 0.037). Across all treatments, CRP and TNFα were reduced in the hock and carpus synovial fluid on day 84 vs. day 0 (P ≤ 0.049). In conclusion, LA:ALA ratios utilized in this study can be fed at varying linoleic acid levels without impacting growth or inflammation. Over the last three decades, agent-based modeling/model (ABM) has been one of the most powerful and valuable simulation-based decision modeling techniques used to study the complex dynamic interactions between animals and their environment. ABM is a relatively new modeling technique in the animal research arena, with immense potential for routine decision-making in livestock systems. We describe ABM’s fundamental characteristics for developing intelligent modeling systems, exemplify its use for livestock production, and describe commonly used software for designing and developing ABM. After that, we discuss several aspects of the developmental mechanics of an ABM, including (1) how livestock researchers can conceptualize and design a model, (2) the main components of an ABM, (3) different statistical methods of analyzing the outputs, and (4) verification, validation, and replication of an ABM. Then, we perform an overall analysis of the utilities of ABM in different subsystems of the livestock systems ranging from epidemiological prediction to nutritional management to livestock market dynamics. Finally, we discuss the concept of hybrid intelligent models (i.e., merging real-time data streams with intelligent ABM), which have applications in artificial intelligence-based decision-making for precision livestock farming. ABM captures individual agents’ characteristics, interactions, and the emergent properties that arise from these interactions; thus, animal scientists can benefit from ABM in multiple ways, including understanding system-level outcomes, analyzing agent behaviors, exploring different scenarios, and evaluating policy interventions. Several platforms for building ABM exist (e.g., NetLogo, Repast J, and AnyLogic), but they have unique features making one more suitable for solving specific problems. The strengths of ABM can be combined with other modeling approaches, including artificial intelligence, allowing researchers to advance our understanding further and contribute to sustainable livestock management practices. There are many ways to develop and apply mathematical models in livestock production that might assist with sustainable development. However, users must be experienced when choosing the appropriate modeling technique and computer platform (i.e., modeling development tool) that will facilitate the adoption of mathematical models by certifying that the model is field-ready and versatile enough for untrained users. Advancements in precision livestock technology have resulted in an unprecedented amount of data being collected on individual animals. Throughout the data analysis chain, many bottlenecks occur, including processing raw sensor data, integrating multiple streams of information, incorporating data into animal growth and nutrition models, developing decision support tools for producers, and training animal science students as data scientists. To realize the promise of precision livestock management technologies, open-source tools and tutorials must be developed to reduce these bottlenecks, which are a direct result of the tremendous time and effort required to create data pipelines from scratch. Open-source programming languages (e.g., R or Python) can provide users with tools to automate many data processing steps for cleaning, aggregating, and integrating data. However, the steps from data collection to training artificial intelligence models and integrating predictions into mathematical models can be tedious for those new to statistical programming, with few examples pertaining to animal science. To address this issue, we outline how open-source code can help overcome many of the bottlenecks that occur in the era of big data and precision livestock technology, with an emphasis on how routine use and publication of open-source code can help facilitate training the next generation of animal scientists. In addition, two case studies are presented with publicly available data and code to demonstrate how open-source tutorials can be utilized to streamline data processing, train machine learning models, integrate with animal nutrition models, and facilitate learning. The National Animal Nutrition Program focuses on providing research-based data on animal performance and feeding strategies. Several ruminant animals rely almost exclusively on the complex polysaccharide matrix from the plant cell wall (CW) as their primary energy source via volatile fatty acids produced through ruminal and some hindgut fermentation processes. The CW contains different types and proportions of polysaccharides, proteins, phenolic compounds, and minerals in their macromolecular structure that influence the rate and extent of fiber digestion and selective retention of particulate matter due to its physical characteristics (buoyancy and comminuting) in the reticulorumen. The biosynthetic formation of the CW dictates possible manipulation mechanisms (targeted plant and microbes selection) and processing methods (physical, chemical, microbial, and enzymatic treatments and the use of genetically engineered bacteria) to increase its digestibility, leading to better utilization of the CW by the ruminant animal and hopefully lower the contribution of ruminants’ greenhouse gas emissions. Early studies on lignin biosynthesis have led to more advanced studies focusing on replacing traditional monolignols with homopolymers that are easier to deconstruct or degrade. Concurrently, laboratory methods must be developed, evaluated, and modified to accurately reflect the digestibility and nutritive value of CW brought about by modern manipulation mechanisms or processing methods. However, the laboratory methods must also be reliable, precise, feasible, trivial, easy to implement, and cost-effective, but at the same time environmentally friendly and aware. For instance, although the acid detergent lignin has been demonstrated to behave uniformly as a nutritional entity, its chemical determination and association with carbohydrates still lack consensus. Spectroscopy (near-infrared and Raman) and in vitro gas production techniques have been adopted to assess plant chemical composition and nutritive value, but an incomplete understanding of the impacts caused by disrupting the CW for sample processing still exists. Different variations of multicompartmental and time- and age-dependent mathematical models have been proposed to determine the ruminal rates of degradation and passage of fiber. However, low-quality and incomplete data due to inconsistent marker results used to determine passage rates and transit time of fiber in the gastrointestinal tract have hindered advancements and adoptions of the next generation of computer models to understand ruminal fiber degradation. Precision feeding is a strategy for supplying an amount and composition of feed as close that are as possible to each animal’s nutrient requirements, with the aim of reducing feed costs and environmental losses. Usually, the nutrient requirements of gestating sows are provided by a nutrition model that requires input data such as sow and herd characteristics, but also an estimation of future farrowing performances. New sensors and automatons, such as automatic feeders and drinkers, have been developed on pig farms over the last decade, and have produced large amounts of data. This study evaluated machine-learning methods for predicting the daily nutrient requirements of gestating sows, based only on sensor data, according to various configurations of digital farms. The data of 73 gestating sows was recorded using sensors such as electronic feeders and drinker stations, connected weight scales, accelerometers, and cameras. Nine machine-learning algorithms were trained on various dataset scenarios according to different digital farm configurations (one or two sensors), to predict the daily metabolizable energy and standardized ileal digestible lysine requirements for each sow. The prediction results were compared to those predicted by the InraPorc model, a mechanistic model for the precision feeding of gestating sows. The scenario predictions were also evaluated with or without the housing conditions and sow characteristics at artificial insemination usually integrated into the InraPorc model. Adding housing and sow characteristics to sensor data improved the mean average percentage error by 5.58% for lysine and by 2.22% for energy. The higher correlation coefficient values for lysine (0.99) and for energy (0.95) were obtained for scenarios involving an automatic feeder system (daily duration and number of visits with or without consumption) only. The scenarios including an automatic feeder combined with another sensor gave good performance results. For the scenarios using sow and housing characteristics and automatic feeder only, the root mean square error was lower with gradient tree boosting (0.91 MJ/d for energy and 0.08 g/d for lysine) compared with those obtained using linear regression (2.75 MJ/d and 1.07 g/d). The results of this study show that the daily nutrient requirements of gestating sows can be predicted accurately using data provided by sensors and machine-learning methods. Fall-calving primiparous crossbred beef females [body weight (BW): 451 ± 28 (SD) kg; body condition score (BCS): 5.4 ± 0.7] were allocated by fetal sex and expected calving date to receive either 100% (control; CON; n = 13) or 70% (nutrient restricted; NR; n = 13) of metabolizable energy and metabolizable protein requirements for maintenance, pregnancy, and growth from day 160 of gestation to calving. Heifers were individually-fed chopped poor quality hay and supplemented to meet targeted nutritional planes based on estimated hay intakes. Dam BW, BCS, backfat, and metabolic status were determined pre-treatment, every 21 d (BW and metabolic status) or 42 d (BCS and backfat) during gestation, and post-calving. At birth, calf BW and size were measured, and total colostrum from the most full rear quarter was collected pre-suckling. Data were analyzed with nutritional plane, treatment initiation date, and calf sex (when P < 0.25) as fixed effects. Gestational metabolites included day and nutritional plane × day as repeated measures. During late gestation, CON dams gained (P < 0.01) maternal (non-gravid) BW and maintained (P ≥ 0.17) BCS and backfat, while NR dams lost (P < 0.01) maternal BW, BCS, and backfat. Circulating glucose, urea N, and triglycerides were less (P ≤ 0.05) in NR dams than CON at most late gestational timepoints after treatment initiation. Circulating non-esterified fatty acids were greater (P < 0.01) in NR dams than CON. Post-calving, NR dams weighed 63.6 kg less (P < 0.01) and were 2.0 BCS less (P < 0.01) than CON. At 1 h post-calving, NR dams had less (P = 0.01) plasma glucose and tended to have less (P = 0.08) plasma triglycerides than CON. Nutrient restriction did not affect (P ≥ 0.27) gestation length, calf birth weight, or calf size at birth. Colostrum yield was 40% less (P = 0.04) in NR dams than CON. Protein and immunoglobulin concentrations were greater (P ≤ 0.04), but free glucose and urea N concentrations were less (P ≤ 0.03), in colostrum of NR dams than CON. Colostrum total lactose, free glucose, and urea N were less (P ≤ 0.03) in NR dams than CON, but total protein, triglycerides, and immunoglobulins were not affected (P ≥ 0.55). In summary, beef heifers experiencing late gestational nutrient restriction prioritized partitioning nutrients to fetal growth and colostrum production over maternal growth. An extended calving interval (CInt) by extending the voluntary waiting period (VWP) could be associated with altered metabolism in dairy cows. The aim of this study was first to evaluate the effects of VWP on metabolism and body condition during the first 305 d after the first calving in the experiment (calving 1), around the end of the VWP, and during pregnancy (280 d before calving 2). Second, the effects of the VWP on metabolism were determined from 2 wk before until 6 wk after calving 2. Third, individual cow characteristics were used to predict milk production and body condition of cows after different VWP. Holstein-Friesian cows (N = 154, 41 primiparous [PP], 113 multiparous [MP]) were blocked for parity, milk production, and lactation persistency, randomly assigned to a VWP of 50, 125, or 200 d (VWP50, VWP125, or VWP200) and followed from calving 1 until 6 wk after calving 2. In the first 6 wk after calving 1 and from 2 wk before until 6 wk after calving 2, weekly plasma samples were analyzed for nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), β-hydroxybutyrate, glucose, insulin, and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). From wk 7 after calving 1 until 2 wk before calving 2, insulin and IGF-1 were analyzed every 2 wk. Fat- and protein-corrected milk (FPCM) and body weight (BW) gain were measured weekly. Cows were divided in two parity classes based on calving 1 (PP and MP) and remained in these classes after calving 2. During pregnancy, MP cows in VWP200 had greater plasma insulin and IGF-1 concentration and lower FPCM compared with MP cows in VWP125 (insulin: 18.5 vs. 13.9 µU/mL, CI 13.0–19.7, P < 0.01; IGF-1: 198.5 vs. 175.3 ng/mL ± 5.3, P = 0.04; FPCM: 22.6 vs. 30.0 kg/d ± 0.8, P < 0.01) or VWP50 (insulin: 15.8 µU/mL, P < 0.01; IGF-1: 178.2 ng/mL, P < 0.01; FPCM: 26.6 kg/d, P < 0.01) and had a greater daily BW gain compared with cows in VWP50 (3.6 vs. 2.5 kg/d ± 0.2; P < 0.01). After calving 2, MP cows in VWP200 had greater plasma NEFA concentration (0.41 mmol/liter) compared with MP cows in VWP125 (0.30 mmol/liter, P = 0.04) or VWP50 (0.26 mmol/liter, P < 0.01). For PP cows, the VWP did not affect FPCM or body condition during the first lactation in the experiment, or metabolism after calving 2. Independent of the VWP, higher milk production and lower body condition before insemination were associated with higher milk production and lower body condition at the end of the lactation. The replacement of fishmeal (FM) by insect meal (IM) in aquafeed formulation has been thoroughly studied lately, but little is known about their impact on nutrient metabolism of fish. This study evaluated the impact not only of partial but also total FM replacement by IM on intermediary metabolism of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). A fishmeal-based diet was used as a control (CTRL) and two other diets were formulated to include 20% and 40% of defatted Tenebrio molitor larvae meal (dTM), replacing 50% (TM50) and 100% (TM100) of fishmeal (FM), respectively. After a 16-week feeding trial, a multidisciplinary approach including assessment of histological, biochemical, molecular, and enzymatic parameters was adopted to investigate hepatic and plasmatic responses to the different dietary formulations. The results obtained demonstrated that dTM can be successfully used to replace 50% of FM in diets for European sea bass, without adversely affecting liver health or intermediary metabolism of nutrients. As for TM100, although no signs of steatosis were observed in the liver, the activity of glycolytic and lipogenic genes and enzymes increased when compared to CTRL diet (P < 0.05), resulting in higher levels of plasmatic non-esterified fatty acids and triacylglycerides (P < 0.05), which in the long-term may compromise fish health, thus precluding such a high degree of substitution for use in practical diets for European sea bass. Feeding rumen-protected choline (RPC) to late gestation dairy cows has potential to affect growth in offspring. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of in utero choline exposure on the growth, feed efficiency (FE), metabolism, and carcass quality of Angus × Holstein cattle. Multiparous Holstein cows pregnant with male (N = 17) or female (N = 30) Angus-sired calves were enrolled 21 d prepartum and randomly assigned to one of four dietary treatments varying in quantity and formulation of RPC. The treatments included a control with 0 g/d supplemental RPC (CTL), supplemental RPC fed at the recommended dose (RD) of 15 g/d from either an established RPC product (RPC1RD; ReaShure; Balchem Corp.) or choline ion from a concentrated RPC prototype (RPC2RD; Balchem Corp.), or a high dose (HD) of RPC2 fed at 22 g/d (RPC2HD). From 2 to 6 mo of age, calves were group housed and offered 2.3 kg grain/hd/d (42% CP) with ad libitum grass hay, and stepped up to a complete finishing diet by 7 mo (12.0% CP; 1.34 Mcal/kg NEg). Weight and height were measured monthly. Animal FE was measured in individual pens for 35 d at 8 mo. Feed intake was measured daily, and blood was obtained on day 18 during the FE period. Afterwards, cattle were group housed and offered a free-choice finishing diet until slaughter, where carcass yield and quality characteristics were measured. Mixed models were used in PROC MIXED (SAS, 9.4) with the fixed effects of treatment, sex, time, their interactions, and the random effect of calf. Month was the repeated measure, and preplanned contrasts were used. Blood and FE data were analyzed with the fixed effect of dam choline treatment, calf sex, and the interaction. Increasing dose of RPC tended to increase weight over the entire study period. Feeding any RPC increased hip and wither height compared with CTL, and increasing RPC dose linearly increased hip and wither height. Treatment and sex interacted on DMI whereby increasing RPC intake linearly increased DMI for males but not females. Compared with control, feeding any RPC decreased plasma insulin, glucose, and an insulin sensitivity index (RQUICKI). In utero choline exposure increased kidney–pelvic–heart fat and marbling score. Mechanisms of action for intrauterine choline exposure on offspring growth, metabolism, and carcass characteristics should be explored as they have direct implications for profitability for cattle growers and feeders.
