Connected component labeling (CCL) is a fundamental image processing problem that has been studied in many platforms, including GPUs. A common approach to CCL performance analysis is studying the total processing time as a function of abstract image features, like the number of connected components or the fraction of foreground pixels, and input data usually includes synthetic images and segmented video datasets. In this paper, we develop on these ideas and propose an evaluation methodology for GPU CCL algorithms based on synthetic image patterns, addressing the nonexistence of a standard and reliable benchmark in the literature. Our methodology, applied on two important algorithms from existing literature, uncovers their data dependency with great detail, and allows us to model their processing time in three real-world video data sets as functions of abstract, high-level image concepts. We also apply our methodology for studying the memory and performance requirements of two strategies for computing connected component properties: an existing memory-hungry approach, and a new memory-preserving strategy. Minimum-cost flow algorithms have recently achieved state-of-the-art results in multi-object tracking. However, they rely on the whole image sequence as input. When deployed in real-time applications or in distributed settings, these algorithms first operate on short batches of frames and then stitch the results into full trajectories. This decoupled strategy is prone to errors because the batch-based tracking errors may propagate to the final trajectories and cannot be corrected by other batches. In this paper, we propose a greedy batch-based minimum-cost flow approach for tracking multiple objects. Unlike existing approaches that conduct batch-based tracking and stitching sequentially, we optimize consecutive batches jointly so that the tracking results on one batch may benefit the results on the other. Specifically, we apply a generalized minimum-cost flows (MCF) algorithm on each batch and generate a set of conflicting trajectories. These trajectories comprise the ones with high probabilities, but also those with low probabilities potentially missed by detectors and trackers. We then apply the generalized MCF again to obtain the optimal matching between trajectories from consecutive batches. Our proposed approach is simple, effective, and does not require training. Compared with traditional image classification, fine-grained visual categorization is a more challenging task, because it targets to classify objects belonging to the same species, e.g., classify hundreds of birds or cars. In the past several years, researchers have made many achievements on this topic. However, most of them are heavily dependent on the artificial annotations, e.g., bounding boxes, part annotations, and so on. The requirement of artificial annotations largely hinders the scalability and application. Motivated to release such dependence, this paper proposes a robust and discriminative visual description named Automated Bi-level Description (AutoBD). “Bi-level” denotes two complementary part-level and object-level visual descriptions, respectively. AutoBD is “automated,” because it only requires the image-level labels of training images and does not need any annotations for testing images. Compared with the part annotations labeled by the human, the image-level labels can be easily acquired, which thus makes AutoBD suitable for large-scale visual categorization. Specifically, the part-level description is extracted by identifying the local region saliently representing the visual distinctiveness. The object-level description is extracted from object bounding boxes generated with a co-localization algorithm. Although only using the image-level labels, AutoBD outperforms the recent studies on two public benchmark, i.e., classification accuracy achieves 81.6% on CUB-200–2011 and 88.9% on Car-196, respectively. Multi-label problems arise in various domains, including automatic multimedia data categorization, and have generated significant interest in computer vision and machine learning community. However, existing methods do not adequately address two key challenges: exploiting correlations between labels and making up for the lack of labelled data or even missing labelled data. In this paper, we proposed to use a semi-supervised singular value decomposition (SVD) to handle these two challenges. The proposed model takes advantage of the nuclear norm regularization on the SVD to effectively capture the label correlations. Meanwhile, it introduces manifold regularization on mapping to capture the intrinsic structure among data, which provides a good way to reduce the required labelled data with improving the classification performance. Furthermore, we designed an efficient algorithm to solve the proposed model based on the alternating direction method of multipliers, and thus, it can efficiently deal with large-scale data sets. Experimental results for synthetic and real-world multimedia data sets demonstrate that the proposed method can exploit the label correlations and obtain promising and better label prediction results than the state-of-the-art methods. Objective: Homogeneity is a notion used to describe images in various fields and is often linked to critical aspects of those fields. However, this term is rarely defined in the literature and no gold standard exists for its quantification. A few quantification algorithms have been proposed, but they lack both simplicity and robustness. As a result, the scientific community uses the notion of homogeneity in subjective analysis, preventing objective comparison of a large number of data or of different studies. The main objectives of this manuscript are to propose a definition of homogeneity and an algorithm for its quantification. Method: This algorithm, called MASQH, rely on a multi-scale, statistical and segmentation-free approach and outputs a single homogeneity index, which makes it robust and easy to use. Results: The performance and reliability of the method are demonstrated through three case studies: Firstly, on synthetic images to study the behavior and assess the relevance of the algorithm in diverse situations and hence, in various potential fields. Secondly, on histological images derived from experimental chitosan-platelet-rich-plasma hybrid biomaterial, where the quantitative results are compared to a qualitative classification provided by an expert in the field. Thirdly, on experimental nanocomposites images for which results are compared to two other homogeneity quantification algorithms from the field of nanocomposites. Conclusion and significance: By quantifying homogeneity, the MASQH method may help to compare disparate studies in the literature and quantitatively demonstrate the impact of homogeneity in various fields. This paper addresses object tracking in ultrasound images using a robust multiple model tracker. The proposed tracker has the following features: 1) it uses multiple dynamic models to track the evolution of the object boundary, and 2) it models invalid observations (outliers), reducing their influence on the shape estimates. The problem considered in this paper is the tracking of the left ventricle which is known to be a challenging problem. The heart motion presents two phases (diastole and systole) with different dynamics, the multiple models used in this tracker try to solve this difficulty. In addition, ultrasound images are corrupted by strong multiplicative noise which prevents the use of standard deformable models. Robust estimation techniques are used to address this difficulty. The multiple model data association (MMDA) tracker proposed in this paper is based on a bank of nonlinear filters, organized in a tree structure. Measurement of visual quality is of fundamental importance to numerous image and video processing applications. The goal of quality assessment (QA) research is to design algorithms that can automatically assess the quality of images or videos in a perceptually consistent manner. Image QA algorithms generally interpret image quality as fidelity or similarity with a "reference" or "perfect" image in some perceptual space. Such "full-reference" QA methods attempt to achieve consistency in quality prediction by modeling salient physiological and psychovisual features of the human visual system (HVS), or by signal fidelity measures. In this paper, we approach the image QA problem as an information fidelity problem. Specifically, we propose to quantify the loss of image information to the distortion process and explore the relationship between image information and visual quality. QA systems are invariably involved with judging the visual quality of "natural" images and videos that are meant for "human consumption." Researchers have developed sophisticated models to capture the statistics of such natural signals. Using these models, we previously presented an information fidelity criterion for image QA that related image quality with the amount of information shared between a reference and a distorted image. In this paper, we propose an image information measure that quantifies the information that is present in the reference image and how much of this reference information can be extracted from the distorted image. Combining these two quantities, we propose a visual information fidelity measure for image QA. We validate the performance of our algorithm with an extensive subjective study involving 779 images and show that our method outperforms recent state-of-the-art image QA algorithms by a sizeable margin in our simulations. The performance of dynamic scene algorithms often suffers because of the inability to effectively acquire features on the targets, particularly when they are distributed over a wide field of view. In this paper, we propose an integrated analysis and control framework for a pan, tilt, zoom (PTZ) camera network in order to maximize various scene understanding performance criteria (e.g., tracking accuracy, best shot, and image resolution) through dynamic camera-to-target assignment and efficient feature acquisition. Moreover, we consider the situation where processing is distributed across the network since it is often unrealistic to have all the image data at a central location. In such situations, the cameras, although autonomous, must collaborate among themselves because each camera's PTZ parameter entails constraints on the others. Motivated by recent work in cooperative control of sensor networks, we propose a distributed optimization strategy, which can be modeled as a game involving the cameras and targets. The cameras gain by reducing the error covariance of the tracked targets or through higher resolution feature acquisition, which, however, comes at the risk of losing the dynamic target. Through the optimization of this reward-versus-risk tradeoff, we are able to control the PTZ parameters of the cameras and assign them to targets dynamically. The tracks, upon which the control algorithm is dependent, are obtained through a consensus estimation algorithm whereby cameras can arrive at a consensus on the state of each target through a negotiation strategy. In this paper, we propose an adaptive image equalization algorithm that automatically enhances the contrast in an input image. The algorithm uses the Gaussian mixture model to model the image gray-level distribution, and the intersection points of the Gaussian components in the model are used to partition the dynamic range of the image into input gray-level intervals. The contrast equalized image is generated by transforming the pixels' gray levels in each input interval to the appropriate output gray-level interval according to the dominant Gaussian component and the cumulative distribution function of the input interval. To take account of the hypothesis that homogeneous regions in the image represent homogeneous silences (or set of Gaussian components) in the image histogram, the Gaussian components with small variances are weighted with smaller values than the Gaussian components with larger variances, and the gray-level distribution is also used to weight the components in the mapping of the input interval to the output interval. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm produces better or comparable enhanced images than several state-of-the-art algorithms. Unlike the other algorithms, the proposed algorithm is free of parameter setting for a given dynamic range of the enhanced image and can be applied to a wide range of image types. Speeded-Up Robust Features is a feature extraction algorithm designed for real-time execution, although this is rarely achievable on low-power hardware such as that in mobile robots. One way to reduce the computation is to discard some of the scale-space octaves, and previous research has simply discarded the higher octaves. This paper shows that this approach is not always the most sensible and presents an algorithm for choosing which octaves to discard based on the properties of the imagery. A new formulation of active contours based on explicit functions has been recently suggested. This novel framework allows real-time 3-D segmentation since it reduces the dimensionality of the segmentation problem. In this paper, we propose a B-spline formulation of this approach, which further improves the computational efficiency of the algorithm. We also show that this framework allows evolving the active contour using local region-based terms, thereby overcoming the limitations of the original method while preserving computational speed. In this paper, we propose a new psychovisual quality metric of images based on recent developments in brain theory and neuroscience, particularly the free-energy principle. The perception and understanding of an image is modeled as an active inference process, in which the brain tries to explain the scene using an internal generative model. The psychovisual quality is thus closely related to how accurately visual sensory data can be explained by the generative model, and the upper bound of the discrepancy between the image signal and its best internal description is given by the free energy of the cognition process. Therefore, the perceptual quality of an image can be quantified using the free energy. Constructively, we develop a reduced-reference free-energy-based distortion metric (FEDM) and a no-reference free-energy-based quality metric (NFEQM). The FEDM and the NFEQM are nearly invariant to many global systematic deviations in geometry and illumination that hardly affect visual quality, for which existing image quality metrics wrongly predict severe quality degradation. Although with very limited or even without information on the reference image, the FEDM and the NFEQM are highly competitive compared with the full-reference SSIM image quality metric on images in the popular LIVE database. Moreover, FEDM and NFEQM can measure correctly the visual quality of some model-based image processing algorithms, for which the competing metrics often contradict with viewers' opinions. Most research on image decomposition, e.g., image segmentation and image parsing, has predominantly focused on the low-level visual clues within a single image and neglected the contextual information across images. In this paper, we present a new perspective to image decomposition piloted by the multilabel context associated with each individual image. Observing that the contextual information (i.e., local label representations of the same label are similar while those from different labels are dissimilar) exists across images, we propose to perform image decomposition in a collective way and obtain an optimal representation for each label from a set of multilabeled images. We formulate the problem as an optimization problem which maximizes inter-label difference while minimizing the intra-label difference of the target label representations and propose two ways to solve this problem. Such a contextual image decomposition has a wide variety of applications, among which two exemplary ones—multilabel image annotation and label ranking, are presented and evaluated with different classification techniques. This paper addresses the problem of image alignment based on random measurements. Image alignment consists of estimating the relative transformation between a query image and a reference image. We consider the specific problem where the query image is provided in compressed form in terms of linear measurements captured by a vision sensor. We cast the alignment problem as a manifold distance minimization problem in the linear subspace defined by the measurements. The transformation manifold that represents synthesis of shift, rotation, and isotropic scaling of the reference image can be given in closed form when the reference pattern is sparsely represented over a parametric dictionary. We show that the objective function can then be decomposed as the difference of two convex functions (DC) in the particular case where the dictionary is built on Gaussian functions. Thus, the optimization problem becomes a DC program, which in turn can be solved globally by a cutting plane method. The quality of the solution is typically affected by the number of random measurements and the condition number of the manifold that describes the transformations of the reference image. We show that the curvature, which is closely related to the condition number, remains bounded in our image alignment problem, which means that the relative transformation between two images can be determined optimally in a reduced subspace. Robust object detection has many important applications in real-world online photo processing. For example, both Google image search and MSN live image search have integrated human face detector to retrieve face or portrait photos. Inspired by the success of such face filtering approach, in this paper, we focus on another popular online photo category—animal, which is one of the top five categories in the MSN live image search query log. As a first attempt, we focus on the problem of animal head detection of a set of relatively large land animals that are popular on the internet, such as cat, tiger, panda, fox, and cheetah. First, we proposed a new set of gradient oriented feature, Haar of Oriented Gradients (HOOG), to effectively capture the shape and texture features on animal head. Then, we proposed two detection algorithms, namely Bruteforce detection and Deformable detection, to effectively exploit the shape feature and texture feature simultaneously. Experimental results on 14 379 well labeled animals images validate the superiority of the proposed approach. This paper proposes a stratified approach for camera calibration using spheres. Previous works have exploited epipolar tangents to locate frontier points on spheres for estimating the epipolar geometry. It is shown in this paper that other than the frontier points, two additional point features can be obtained by considering the bitangent envelopes of a pair of spheres. A simple method for locating the images of such point features and the sphere centers is presented. An algorithm for recovering the fundamental matrix in a plane plus parallax representation using these recovered image points and the epipolar tangents from three spheres is developed. A new formulation of the absolute dual quadric as a cone tangent to a dual sphere with the plane at infinity being its vertex is derived. This allows the recovery of the absolute dual quadric, which is used to upgrade the weak calibration to a full calibration. Nonconvex nonsmooth regularization has advantages over convex regularization for restoring images with neat edges. However, its practical interest used to be limited by the difficulty of the computational stage which requires a nonconvex nonsmooth minimization. In this paper, we deal with nonconvex nonsmooth minimization methods for image restoration and reconstruction. Our theoretical results show that the solution of the nonconvex nonsmooth minimization problem is composed of constant regions surrounded by closed contours and neat edges. The main goal of this paper is to develop fast minimization algorithms to solve the nonconvex nonsmooth minimization problem. In this paper, we seek to fit a model, specified in terms of connected ellipses, to an image silhouette. Some algorithms that have attempted this problem are sensitive to initial guesses and also may converge to a wrong solution when they attempt to minimize the objective function for the entire ellipse structure in one step. We present an algorithm that overcomes these issues. Our first step is to temporarily ignore the connections, and refine the initial guess using unconstrained Expectation-Maximization (EM) for mixture Gaussian densities. Then the ellipses are reconnected linearly. Lastly, we apply the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm to fine-tune the ellipse shapes to best align with the contour. The fitting is achieved in a hierarchical manner based upon the joints of the model. Path openings and closings are morphological operations with flexible line segments as structuring elements. These line segments have the ability to adapt to local image structures, and can be used to detect lines that are not perfectly straight. They also are a convenient and efficient alternative to straight line segments as structuring elements when the exact orientation of lines in the image is not known. These path operations are defined by an adjacency relation, which typically allows for lines that are approximately horizontal, vertical or diagonal. However, because this definition allows zig-zag lines, diagonal paths can be much shorter than the corresponding horizontal or vertical paths. This undoubtedly causes problems when attempting to use path operations for length measurements. This paper 1) introduces a dimensionality-independent implementation of the path opening and closing algorithm by Appleton and Talbot, 2) proposes a constraint on the path operations to improve their ability to perform length measurements, and 3) shows how to use path openings and closings in a granulometry to obtain the length distribution of elongated structures directly from a gray-value image, without a need for binarizing the image and identifying individual objects. This paper studies phase singularities (PSs) for image representation. We show that PSs calculated with Laguerre-Gauss filters contain important information and provide a useful tool for image analysis. PSs are invariant to image translation and rotation. We introduce several invariant features to characterize the core structures around PSs and analyze the stability of PSs to noise addition and scale change. We also study the characteristics of PSs in a scale space, which lead to a method to select key scales along phase singularity curves. We demonstrate two applications of PSs: object tracking and image matching. In object tracking, we use the iterative closest point algorithm to determine the correspondences of PSs between two adjacent frames. The use of PSs allows us to precisely determine the motions of tracked objects. In image matching, we combine PSs and scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) descriptor to deal with the variations between two images and examine the proposed method on a benchmark database. This paper presents a unified solution to three unsolved problems existing in face verification with subspace learning techniques: selection of verification threshold, automatic determination of subspace dimension, and deducing feature fusing weights. In contrast to previous algorithms which search for the projection matrix directly, our new algorithm investigates a similarity metric matrix (SMM). With a certain verification threshold, this matrix is learned by a semidefinite programming approach, along with the constraints of the kindred pairs with similarity larger than the threshold, and inhomogeneous pairs with similarity smaller than the threshold. Then, the subspace dimension and the feature fusing weights are simultaneously inferred from the singular value decomposition of the derived SMM. In addition, the weighted and tensor extensions are proposed to further improve the algorithmic effectiveness and efficiency, respectively. Essentially, the verification is conducted within an affine subspace in this new algorithm and is, hence, called the affine subspace for verification (ASV). Extensive experiments show that the ASV can achieve encouraging face verification accuracy in comparison to other subspace algorithms, even without the need to explore any parameters. This paper studies image deblurring problems using a total variation-based model, with a non-negativity constraint. The addition of the non-negativity constraint improves the quality of the solutions, but makes the solution process a difficult one. The contribution of our work is a fast and robust numerical algorithm to solve the non-negatively constrained problem. To overcome the nondifferentiability of the total variation norm, we formulate the constrained deblurring problem as a primal-dual program which is a variant of the formulation proposed by Chan, Golub, and Mulet for unconstrained problems. Here, dual refers to a combination of the Lagrangian and Fenchel duals. To solve the constrained primal-dual program, we use a semi-smooth Newton's method. We exploit the relationship between the semi-smooth Newton's method and the primal-dual active set method to achieve considerable simplification of the computations. The main advantages of our proposed scheme are: no parameters need significant adjustment, a standard inverse preconditioner works very well, quadratic rate of local convergence (theoretical and numerical), numerical evidence of global convergence, and high accuracy of solving the optimality system. The scheme shows robustness of performance over a wide range of parameters. This paper generalizes the previously developed automated edge-detection parameter selection algorithm of Yitzhaky and Peli. We generalize the approach to arbitrary multidimensional, continuous or discrete parameter spaces, and feature spaces. This generalization enables use of the parameter selection approach with more general image features, for use in feature-based multisensor image registration applications. We investigate the problem of selecting a suitable parameter space sampling density in the automated parameter selection algorithm. A real-valued sensitivity measure is developed which characterizes the effect of parameter space sampling on feature set variability. Closed-form solutions of the sensitivity measure for special feature set relationships are derived. We conduct an analysis of the convergence properties of the sensitivity measure as a function of increasing parameter space sampling density. For certain parameter space sampling sequence types, closed-form expressions for the sensitivity measure limit values are presented. We discuss an approach to parameter space sampling density selection which uses the sensitivity measure convergence behavior. This paper presents an efficient technique for extracting closed contours from range images' edge points. Edge points are assumed to be given as input to the algorithm (i.e., previously computed by an edge-based range image segmentation technique). The proposed approach consists of three steps. Initially, a partially connected graph is generated from those input points. Then, the minimum spanning tree of that graph is computed. Finally, a postprocessing technique generates a single path through the regions' boundaries by removing noisy links and closing open contours. The novelty of the proposed approach lies in the fact that, by representing edge points as nodes of a partially connected graph, it reduces the contour closure problem to a minimum spanning tree partitioning problem plus a cost function minimization stage to generate closed contours. Deformable models (e.g., snakes) perform poorly in many image analysis problems. The contour model is attracted by edge points detected in the image. However, many edge points do not belong to the object contour, preventing the active contour from converging toward the object boundary. A new algorithm is proposed in this paper to overcome this difficulty. The algorithm is based on two key ideas. First, edge points are associated in strokes. Second, each stroke is classified as valid (inlier) or invalid (outlier) and a confidence degree is associated to each stroke. The expectation maximization algorithm is used to update the confidence degrees and to estimate the object contour. It is shown that this is equivalent to the use of an adaptive potential function which varies during the optimization process. Valid strokes receive high confidence degrees while confidence degrees of invalid strokes tend to zero during the optimization process. This paper presents a very efficient algorithm for image denoising based on wavelets and multifractals for singularity detection. A challenge of image denoising is how to preserve the edges of an image when reducing noise. By modeling the intensity surface of a noisy image as statistically self-similar multifractal processes and taking advantage of the multiresolution analysis with wavelet transform to exploit the local statistical self-similarity at different scales, the pointwise singularity strength value characterizing the local singularity at each scale was calculated. By thresholding the singularity strength, wavelet coefficients at each scale were classified into two categories: the edge-related and regular wavelet coefficients and the irregular coefficients. The irregular coefficients were denoised using an approximate minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) estimation method, while the edge-related and regular wavelet coefficients were smoothed using the fuzzy weighted mean (FWM) filter aiming at preserving the edges and details when reducing noise. Furthermore, to make the FWM-based filtering more efficient for noise reduction at the lowest decomposition level, the MMSE-based filtering was performed as the first pass of denoising followed by performing the FWM-based filtering. This paper describes a novel technique to recover large similarity transformations (rotation/scale/translation) and moderate perspective deformations among image pairs. We introduce a hybrid algorithm that features log-polar mappings and nonlinear least squares optimization. The use of log-polar techniques in the spatial domain is introduced as a preprocessing module to recover large scale changes (e.g., at least four-fold) and arbitrary rotations. Although log-polar techniques are used in the Fourier-Mellin transform to accommodate rotation and scale in the frequency domain, its use in registering images subjected to very large scale changes has not yet been exploited in the spatial domain. In this paper, we demonstrate the superior performance of the log-polar transform in featureless image registration in the spatial domain. We achieve subpixel accuracy through the use of nonlinear least squares optimization. The registration process yields the eight parameters of the perspective transformation that best aligns the two input images. Extensive testing was performed on uncalibrated real images and an array of 10,000 image pairs with known transformations derived from the Corel Stock Photo Library of royalty-free photographic images. The extraction of high-level color descriptors is an increasingly important problem, as these descriptions often provide links to image content. When combined with image segmentation, color naming can be used to select objects by color, describe the appearance of the image, and generate semantic annotations. This paper presents a computational model for color categorization and naming and extraction of color composition. In this paper, we start from the National Bureau of Standards' recommendation for color names, and through subjective experiments, we develop our color vocabulary and syntax. To assign a color name from the vocabulary to an arbitrary input color, we then design a perceptually based color-naming metric. The proposed algorithm follows relevant neurophysiological findings and studies on human color categorization. Finally, we extend the algorithm and develop a scheme for extracting the color composition of a complex image. According to our results, the proposed method identifies known color regions in different color spaces accurately, the color names assigned to randomly selected colors agree with human judgments, and the description of the color composition of complex scenes is consistent with human observations. Regularization is one of the most promising methods for image up-sampling, which is an ill-posed inverse problem. A key element of such a regularization approach is the observation model relating the observed lower resolution (LR) image to the desired higher resolution (HR) up-sampled image, used in the data-fidelity term of the regularization cost function. This paper presents an algorithm to determine this observation model based on a model of the physical acquisition process for the LR image, and the ideal acquisition process for the desired HR image, both from the same underlying continuous image. The method is illustrated with typical scenarios corresponding to LR and HR cameras modeled by either Gaussian or rectangular apertures. Image segmentation is an essential processing step for many image analysis applications. In this paper, we propose a novel pixon-based adaptive scale method for image segmentation. The key idea of our approach is that a pixon-based image model is combined with a Markov random field (MRF) model under a Bayesian framework. In our method, we introduce a new pixon scheme that is more suitable for image segmentation than the "fuzzy" pixon scheme. The anisotropic diffusion equation is successfully used to form the pixons in our new pixon scheme. A multiple exposure fusion to enhance the dynamic range of an image is proposed. The construction of high dynamic range images (HDRIs) is performed by combining multiple images taken with different exposures and estimating the irradiance value for each pixel. This is a common process for HDRI acquisition. During this process, displacements of the images caused by object movements often yield motion blur and ghosting artifacts. To address the problem, this paper presents an efficient and accurate multiple exposure fusion technique for the HDRI acquisition. Our method simultaneously estimates displacements and occlusion and saturation regions by using maximum a posteriori estimation and constructs motion-blur-free HDRIs. Reliably detecting objects in broad-area overhead or satellite images has become an increasingly pressing need, as the capabilities for image acquisition are growing rapidly. The problem is particularly difficult in the presence of large intraclass variability, e.g., finding “boats” or “buildings,” where model-based approaches tend to fail because no good model or template can be defined for the highly variable targets. This paper explores an automatic approach to detect and classify targets in high-resolution broad-area satellite images, which relies on detecting statistical signatures of targets, in terms of a set of biologically-inspired low-level visual features. Broad-area images are cut into small image chips, analyzed in two complementary ways: “attention/saliency” analysis exploits local features and their interactions across space, while “gist” analysis focuses on global nonspatial features and their statistics. Both feature sets are used to classify each chip as containing target(s) or not, using a support vector machine. Four experiments were performed to find “boats” (Experiments 1 and 2), “buildings” (Experiment 3) and “airplanes” (Experiment 4). In experiment 1, 14 416 image chips were randomly divided into training (300 boat, 300 nonboat) and test sets (13 816), and classification was performed on the test set (ROC area: 0.977 \pm 0.003). In experiment 2, classification was performed on another test set of 11 385 chips from another broad-area image, keeping the same training set as in experiment 1 (ROC area: 0.952 \pm 0.006). In experiment 3, 600 training chips (300 for each type) were randomly selected from 108 885 chips, and classification was conducted (ROC area: 0.922 \pm 0.005). In experiment 4, 20 training chips (10 for each type) were randomly selected to classify the remaining 2581 chips (ROC area: 0.976 \pm 0.003). The proposed algorithm outperformed the state-of-the-art SIFT, HMAX, and hidden-scale salient structure methods, and previous gist-only features in all four experiments. In this paper, we propose a variational formulation for histogram transfer of two or more color images. We study an energy functional composed by three terms: one tends to approach the cumulative histograms of the transformed images, the other two tend to maintain the colors and geometry of the original images. By minimizing this energy, we obtain an algorithm that balances equalization and the conservation of features of the original images. As a result, they evolve while approaching an intermediate histogram between them. This intermediate histogram does not need to be specified in advance, but it is a natural result of the model. This paper presents a multiphase fuzzy region competition model that takes into account spatial and frequency information for image segmentation. In the proposed energy functional, each region is represented by a fuzzy membership function and a data fidelity term that measures the conformity of spatial and frequency data within each region to (generalized) Gaussian densities whose parameters are determined jointly with the segmentation process. Compared with the classical region competition model, our approach gives soft segmentation results via the fuzzy membership functions, and moreover, the use of frequency data provides additional region information that can improve the overall segmentation result. To efficiently solve the minimization of the energy functional, we adopt an alternate minimization procedure and make use of Chambolle's fast duality projection algorithm. We apply the proposed method to synthetic and natural textures as well as real-world natural images. Human observers understand the content of an image intuitively. Based upon image content, they perform many image-related tasks, such as creating slide shows and photo albums, and organizing their image archives. For example, to select photos for an album, people assess image quality based upon the main objects in the image. They modify colors in an image based upon the color of important objects, such as sky, grass or skin. Serious photographers might modify each object separately. Photo applications, in contrast, use low-level descriptors to guide similar tasks. Typical descriptors, such as color histograms, noise level, JPEG artifacts and overall sharpness, can guide an imaging application and safeguard against blunders. However, there is a gap between the outcome of such operations and the same task performed by a person. We believe that the gap can be bridged by automatically understanding the content of the image. Covariance estimation for high dimensional signals is a classically difficult problem in statistical signal analysis and machine learning. In this paper, we propose a maximum likelihood (ML) approach to covariance estimation, which employs a novel non-linear sparsity constraint. More specifically, the covariance is constrained to have an eigen decomposition which can be represented as a sparse matrix transform (SMT). The SMT is formed by a product of pairwise coordinate rotations known as Givens rotations. Using this framework, the covariance can be efficiently estimated using greedy optimization of the log-likelihood function, and the number of Givens rotations can be efficiently computed using a cross-validation procedure. The resulting estimator is generally positive definite and well-conditioned, even when the sample size is limited. Experiments on a combination of simulated data, standard hyperspectral data, and face image sets show that the SMT-based covariance estimates are consistently more accurate than both traditional shrinkage estimates and recently proposed graphical lasso estimates for a variety of different classes and sample sizes. An important property of the new covariance estimate is that it naturally yields a fast implementation of the estimated eigen-transformation using the SMT representation. In fact, the SMT can be viewed as a generalization of the classical fast Fourier transform (FFT) in that it uses “butterflies” to represent an orthonormal transform. Fractal dimension is a very useful metric for the analysis of the images with self-similar content, such as textures. For its computation there exist several approaches, the probabilistic algorithm being accepted as the most elegant approach. However, all the existing methods are defined for 1-D signals or binary images, with extension to grayscale images. Our purpose is to propose a color version of the probabilistic algorithm for the computation of the fractal dimension. To validate this new approach, we also propose an extension of the existing algorithm for the generation of probabilistic fractals, in order to obtain color fractal images. In this paper we present a more efficient approach to the problem of finding the connected components in binary images. In conventional connected components algorithms, the main data structure to compute and store the connected components is the region label image. We replace the region label image with a singly-linked list of line segments (or runs) for each region. This enables us to design a very fast and memory efficient connected components algorithm. Most conventional algorithms require (at least) two raster scans. Those that only need one raster scan, require irregular and unbounded image access. The proposed algorithm is a single pass regular access algorithm and only requires access to the three most recently processed image lines at any given time. Experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm is considerably faster than the fastest conventional algorithm. Additionally, our novel region coding data structure uses much less memory in typical cases than the traditional region label image. Across the field of inverse problems in image and video processing, nearly all algorithms have various parameters which need to be set in order to yield good results. In practice, usually the choice of such parameters is made empirically with trial and error if no “ground-truth” reference is available. Some analytical methods such as cross-validation and Stein's unbiased risk estimate (SURE) have been successfully used to set such parameters. However, these methods tend to be strongly reliant on restrictive assumptions on the noise, and also computationally heavy. In this paper, we propose a no-reference metric Q which is based upon singular value decomposition of local image gradient matrix, and provides a quantitative measure of true image content (i.e., sharpness and contrast as manifested in visually salient geometric features such as edges,) in the presence of noise and other disturbances. This measure 1) is easy to compute, 2) reacts reasonably to both blur and random noise, and 3) works well even when the noise is not Gaussian. The proposed measure is used to automatically and effectively set the parameters of two leading image denoising algorithms. Ample simulated and real data experiments support our claims. Abstract--In this paper, we propose an interactive color natural image segmentation method. The method integrates color feature with multiscale nonlinear structure tensor texture (MSNST) feature and then uses GrabCut method to obtain the segmentations. The MSNST feature is used to describe the texture feature of an image and integrated into GrabCut framework to overcome the problem of the scale difference of textured images. In addition, we extend the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) to MSNST feature and GMM based on MSNST is constructed to describe the energy function so that the texture feature can be suitably integrated into GrabCut framework and fused with the color feature to achieve the more superior image segmentation performance than the original GrabCut method. For easier implementation and more efficient computation, the symmetric KL divergence is chosen to produce the estimates of the tensor statistics instead of the Riemannian structure of the space of tensor. The Conjugate norm was employed using Locality Preserving Projections (LPP) technique as the distance measure in the color space for more discriminating power. An adaptive fusing strategy is presented to effectively adjust the mixing factor so that the color and MSNST texture features are efficiently integrated to achieve more robust segmentation performance. Last, an iteration convergence criterion is proposed to reduce the time of the iteration of GrabCut algorithm dramatically with satisfied segmentation accuracy. Image segmentation is a fundamental task in many computer vision applications. In this paper, we propose a new unsupervised color image segmentation algorithm, which exploits the information obtained from detecting edges in color images in the CIE L, a * b* color space. To this effect, by using a color gradient detection technique, pixels without edges are clustered and labeled individually to identify some initial portion of the input image content. Elements that contain higher gradient densities are included by the dynamic generation of clusters as the algorithm progresses. Texture modeling is performed by color quantization and local entropy computation of the quantized image. The obtained texture and color information along with a region growth map consisting of all fully grown regions are used to perform a unique multiresolution merging procedure to blend regions with similar characteristics. In this paper, we have developed a new scheme for achieving multilevel annotations of large-scale images automatically. To achieve more sufficient representation of various visual properties of the images, both the global visual features and the local visual features are extracted for image content representation. To tackle the problem of huge intraconcept visual diversity, multiple types of kernels are integrated to characterize the diverse visual similarity relationships between the images more precisely, and a multiple kernel learning algorithm is developed for SVM image classifier training. To address the problem of huge interconcept visua similarity, a novel mnultitask learning algorithm is developed to learn the correlated classifiers for the sibling image concepts under the same parent concept and enhance their discrimination and adaptation power significantly. To tackle the problem of huge intraconcept visual diversity for the image concepts at the higher levels of the concept ontology, a novel hierarchical boosting algorithm is developed to learn their ensemble classifiers hierarchically. In order to assist users on selecting more effective hypotheses for image classifier training, we have developed a novel hyperbolic framework for large-scale image visualization and interactive hypotheses assessment. Dimensionality reduction algorithms, which aim to select a small set of efficient and discriminant features, have attracted great attention for human gait recognition and content-based image retrieval (CBIR). In this paper, we present extensions of our recently proposed marginal Fisher analysis (MEA) to address these problems. For human gait recognition, we first present a direct application of MFA, then inspired by recent advances in matrix and tensor-based dimensionality reduction algorithms, we present matrix-based MFA for directly handling 2-D input in the form of gray-level averaged images. For CBIR, we deal with the relevance feedback problem by extending MFA to marginal biased analysis, in which within-class compactness is characterized only by the distances between each positive sample and its neighboring positive samples. In addition, we present a new technique to acquire a direct optimal solution for MFA without resorting to objective function modification as done in many previous algorithms. We conduct comprehensive experiments on the USF HumaniD gait database and the Corel image retrieval database. Multi-input single-output deconvolution (MISO-D) aims to extract a deblurred estimate of a target signal from several blurred and noisy observations. This paper develops a new two step framework-Texas Two-Step-to solve MISO-D problems with known blurs. Texas Two-Step first reduces the MISO-D problem to a related single-input single-output deconvolution (SISO-D) problem by invoking the concept of sufficient statistics (SSs) and then solves the simpler SISO-D problem using an appropriate technique. The two-step framework enables new MISO-D techniques (both optimal and suboptimal) based on the rich suite of existing SISO-D techniques. In fact, the properties of SSs imply that a MISO-D algorithm is mean-squared-error optimal if and only if it can be rearranged to conform to the Texas Two-Step framework. Using this insight, we construct new wavelet- and curvelet-based MISO-D algorithms with asymptotically optimal performance. Accurate estimation of noise and signal power is of fundamental interest in a wide variety of vision applications as it is critical to thresholding and decision processes. This paper proposes two methods for the estimation of nonstationary noise based upon models of image structure which locally separate signal from noise. The resulting algorithms are noniterative and thereby fast. The accuracy of the proposed and existing methods is compared, first separately and then in application to two common image processing tasks: edge and corner detection. Gabor filters are widely applied in image analysis and computer vision applications. This paper describes a fast algorithm for isotropic complex Gabor filtering that outperforms existing implementations. The main computational improvement arises from the decomposition of Gabor filtering into more efficient Gaussian filtering and sinusoidal modulations. Appropriate filter initial conditions are derived to avoid boundary transients, without requiring explicit image border extension. In this paper, we propose a novel decision fusion algorithm for target tracking in forward-looking infrared image sequences recorded from an airborne platform. An important part of this study is identifying the failure modes in this type of imagery. Our strategy is to prevent these failure modes from developing into tracking failures. The results furnished by competing ego-motion compensation and tracking algorithms are evaluated based on their similarity to a target model constructed using the weighted composite reference function. Image restoration and segmentation are both classical problems, that are known to be difficult and have attracted major research efforts. This paper shows that the two problems are tightly coupled and can be successfully solved together. Mutual support of image restoration and segmentation processes within a joint variational framework is theoretically motivated, and validated by successful experimental results. The proposed variational method integrates semi-blind image deconvolution (parametric blur-kernel), and Mumford-Shah segmentation. The functional is formulated using the Γ-convergence approximation and is iteratively optimized via the alternate minimization method. While the major novelty of this work is in the unified treatment of the semi-blind restoration and segmentation problems, the important special case of known blur is also considered and promising results are obtained. The inverse halftoning algorithm is used to reconstruct a gray image from an input halftone image. Based on the recently published lookup table (LUT) technique, this paper presents a novel edge-based LUT method for inverse halftoning which improves the quality of the reconstructed gray image. The proposed method first uses the LUT-based inverse halftoning method as a Preprocessing step to transform the given halftone image to a base gray image, and then the edges are extracted and classified from the base gray image. According to these classified edges, a novel edge-based LUT is built up to reconstruct the gray image. Based on a set of 30 real training images with both low- and high-frequency contents, experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method achieves a better image quality when compared to the currently published two methods, by Chang et al. and Meşe and Vaidyanathan. This paper addresses the problem of calibrating camera lens distortion, which can be significant in medium to wide angle lenses. Our approach is based on the analysis of distorted images of straight lines. We derive new distortion measures that can be optimized using nonlinear search techniques to find the best distortion parameters that straighten these lines. Unlike the other existing approaches, we also provide fast, closed-form solutions to the distortion coefficients. We prove that including both the distortion center and the decentering coefficients in the nonlinear optimization step may lead to instability of the estimation algorithm. Our approach provides a way to get around this, and, at the same time, it reduces the search space of the Calibration problem without sacrificing the accuracy and produces more stable and noise-robust results. In addition, while almost all existing nonmetric distortion calibration methods needs user involvement in one form or another, we present a robust approach to distortion calibration based on the least-median-of-squares estimator. Our approach is, thus, able to proceed in a fully automatic manner while being less sensitive to erroneous input data such as image curves that are mistakenly considered projections of three-dimensional linear segments.
