This paper studies an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted wireless powered IoT network, where a rotary-wing UAV adopts fly-hover-communicate protocol to successively visit IoT devices in demand. During the hovering periods, the UAV works on full-duplex mode to simultaneously collect data from the target device and charge other devices within its coverage. Practical propulsion power consumption model and non-linear energy harvesting model are taken into account. We formulate a multi-objective optimization problem to jointly optimize three objectives: maximization of sum data rate, maximization of total harvested energy and minimization of UAV’s energy consumption over a particular mission period. These three objectives are in conflict with each other partly and weight parameters are given to describe associated importance. Since IoT devices keep gathering information from the physical surrounding environment and their requirements to upload data change dynamically, online path planning of the UAV is required. In this paper, we apply deep reinforcement learning algorithm to achieve online decision. An extended deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm is proposed to learn control policies of UAV over multiple objectives. While training, the agent learns to produce optimal policies under given weights conditions on the basis of achieving timely data collection according to the requirement priority and avoiding devices’ data overflow. The verification results show that the proposed MODDPG (multi-objective DDPG) algorithm achieves joint optimization of three objectives and optimal policies can be adjusted according to weight parameters among optimization objectives. This paper derives the maximum achievable sum-rate and presents the optimal encoding/decoding framework for rate-diverse wireless network coding (RD-WNC) over broadband channels consisting of multiple parallel subchannels. RD-WNC applies to a communication scenario in which a base station wants to deliver two different messages with different rates to two users. The base station combines the two separate messages into one network-coded message and broadcasts the network-coded message to both users. Each user then extracts its desired message from the network-coded message by subtracting from it the other message, which we assume to be side information available to the user. Deriving the maximum achievable sum-rate for RD-WNC is challenging when the channel consists of multiple parallel subchannels with different channel coefficients (e.g., the subcarrier channels of OFDM systems), since apart from the rate allocation between the two users, optimal power allocation among multiple subchannels needs to be identified. The first contribution of this paper is a new “mountain-leveling” power allocation algorithm to achieve the maximum sum-rate. With the resulting power allocation, we can then achieve the corresponding optimal sum-rate by having a separate encoding/decoding mechanism for each subchannels, but doing so is cumbersome and complex when the number of subchannels is large. The second contribution of this paper is a practical encoding/decoding framework using only one encoder-decoder mechanism for all subchannels without sacrificing sum-rate optimality. In this paper, we leverage reinforcement learning (RL) and cross-layer network coding (CLNC) for efficiently pre-fetching requested contents to the local caches and delivering these contents to requesting users in a downlink fog-radio access network (F-RAN) with device-to-device (D2D) communications. In the considered system, fog access points (F-APs) and cache-enabled D2D (CE-D2D) users are equipped with local caches that alleviate traffic burden at the fronthaul and facilitate rapid delivery of the users’ contents. To this end, the CLNC scheme optimizes the coding decisions, transmission rates, and power levels of both F-APs and CE-D2D users, and RL scheme optimizes caching strategy. A joint content placement and delivery problem is formulated as an optimization problem with a goal to maximize system sum-rate. The problem is an NP-hard problem. To efficiently solve it, we first develop an innovative decentralized CLNC coalition formation (CLNC-CF) switch algorithm to obtain a stable solution for the content delivery problem, where F-APs and CE-D2D users utilize CLNC resource allocation. By considering statistics of channel and users’ content request into account, we then develop a multi-agent RL algorithm for optimizing the content placement at both F-APs and CE-D2D users. Simulation results show that the proposed joint CLNC-CF-RL framework can effectively improve the sum-rate by up to 30%, 60%, and 150%, respectively, compared to: 1) an optimal uncoded algorithm, 2) a standard rate-aware-NC algorithm, and 3) a benchmark classical NC with network-layer optimization. In one of the several manifestations, the future cellular networks are required to accommodate a massive number of devices, several orders of magnitude compared to today’s networks. At the same time, the future cellular networks will have to fulfill stringent latency constraints. To that end, one problem that is posed as a potential showstopper is extreme congestion for requesting uplink scheduling over the physical random access channel (PRACH). Indeed, such congestion drags along scheduling delay problems. In this paper, the use of self-organized device-to-device (D2D) clustering is advocated for mitigating PRACH congestion. To this end, this paper proposes two D2D clustering schemes, namely, random-based clustering and channel-gain-based clustering. Accordingly, this paper sheds light on random access within the proposed D2D clustering schemes and presents a case study based on a stochastic geometry framework. For the sake of objective evaluation, the D2D clustering is benchmarked by the conventional scheduling request procedure. Accordingly, this paper offers insights into useful scenarios that minimize the scheduling delay for each clustering scheme. Underwater environments create a challenging channel for communications. In this paper, we design a novel receiver system by exploring the machine learning technique–Deep Belief Network (DBN) – to combat the signal distortion caused by the Doppler effect and multi-path propagation. We evaluate the performance of the proposed receiver system in both simulation experiments and sea trials. Our proposed receiver system comprises of DBN based de-noising and classification of the received signal. First, the received signal is segmented into frames before the each of these frames is individually pre-processed using a novel pixelization algorithm. Then, using the DBN based de-noising algorithm, features are extracted from these frames and used to reconstruct the received signal. Finally, DBN based classification of the reconstructed signal occurs. Our proposed DBN based receiver system does show better performance in channels influenced by the Doppler effect and multi-path propagation with a performance improvement of 13.2dB at 10−3 Bit Error Rate (BER). Future wireless networks need to support massive machine type communication (mMTC) where a massive number of devices accesses the network and massive MIMO is a promising enabling technology. Massive access schemes have been studied for co-located massive MIMO arrays. In this paper, we investigate the activity detection in grant-free random access for mMTC in cell-free massive MIMO networks using distributed arrays. Each active device transmits a non-orthogonal pilot sequence to the access points (APs) and the APs send the received signals to a central processing unit (CPU) for joint activity detection. The maximum likelihood device activity detection problem is formulated and algorithms for activity detection in cell-free massive MIMO are provided to solve it. The simulation results show that the macro diversity gain provided by the cell-free architecture improves the activity detection performance compared to co-located architecture when the coverage area is large. Edge federated learning (FL) is an emerging paradigm that trains a global parametric model from distributed datasets based on wireless communications. This paper proposes a unit-modulus over-the-air computation (UMAirComp) framework to facilitate efficient edge federated learning, which simultaneously uploads local model parameters and updates global model parameters via analog beamforming. The proposed framework avoids sophisticated baseband signal processing, leading to low communication delays and implementation costs. Training loss bounds of UMAirComp FL systems are derived and two low-complexity large-scale optimization algorithms, termed penalty alternating minimization (PAM) and accelerated gradient projection (AGP), are proposed to minimize the nonconvex nonsmooth loss bound. Simulation results show that the proposed UMAirComp framework with PAM algorithm achieves a smaller mean square error of model parameters’ estimation, training loss, and test error compared with other benchmark schemes. Moreover, the proposed UMAirComp framework with AGP algorithm achieves satisfactory performance while reduces the computational complexity by orders of magnitude compared with existing optimization algorithms. Finally, we demonstrate the implementation of UMAirComp in a vehicle-to-everything autonomous driving simulation platform. It is found that autonomous driving tasks are more sensitive to model parameter errors than other tasks since the neural networks for autonomous driving contain sparser model parameters. Hardware non-idealities are among the main performance restrictions for upcoming wireless communication systems. Asymmetric hardware distortions (HWD) happen when the impairments of the I/Q branches are correlated or imbalanced, which in turn generate improper additive interference at the receiver side. When the interference is improper, as well as in other interference-limited scenarios, improper Gaussian signaling (IGS) has been shown to provide rate and/or power efficiency benefits. In this paper, we investigate the rate benefits of IGS in a two-user interference channel (IC) with additive asymmetric HWD when interference is treated as noise. We propose two iterative algorithms to optimize the parameters of the improper transmit signals. We first rewrite the rate region as an pseudo-signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (PSINR) region and employ majorization minimization and fractional programming to find a suboptimal solution for the achievable user rates. Then, we propose a simplified algorithm based on a separate optimization of the powers and complementary variances of the users, which exhibits lower computational complexity. We show that IGS can improve the performance of the two-user IC with additive HWD. In this paper, we investigate resource allocation for IRS-assisted green multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems. To minimize the total transmit power, both the beamforming vectors at the access point (AP) and the phase shifts at multiple IRSs are jointly optimized, while taking into account the minimum required quality-of-service (QoS) of multiple users. First, two novel algorithms, namely a penalty-based alternating minimization (AltMin) algorithm and an inner approximation (IA) algorithm, are developed to tackle the non-convexity of the formulated optimization problem when perfect channel state information (CSI) is available. Existing designs employ semidefinite relaxation in AltMin-based algorithms, which, however, cannot ensure convergence. In contrast, the proposed penalty-based AltMin and IA algorithms are guaranteed to converge to a stationary point and a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) solution of the design problem, respectively. Second, the impact of imperfect knowledge of the CSI of the channels between the AP and the users is investigated. To this end, a non-convex robust optimization problem is formulated and the penalty-based AltMin algorithm is extended to obtain a stationary solution. Simulation results reveal a key trade-off between the speed of convergence and the achievable total transmit power for the two proposed algorithms. In addition, we show that the proposed algorithms can significantly reduce the total transmit power at the AP compared to various baseline schemes and that the optimal numbers of transmit antennas and IRS reflecting elements, which maximize the system energy efficiency of the considered system, are finite. This paper investigates the dynamic access point (AP) clustering and precoding problem in the downlink of user-centric virtual cell networks. The goal is to maximize the weighted sum spectral efficiency (SE) while satisfying the power constraints and AP clustering constraints in adjacent time slots (TSs). By adopting the random walk mobility to model the mobile user equipments’ movement behaviors, we consider dynamic and time-varying channel conditions. Therefore, the weighted sum SE maximization programming takes the form of discrete-time sequence of mixed-integer non-convex optimization problems. In this paper, we propose to solve this sequential problem in two stages. In the first stage, a dynamic AP clustering approach based on discrete particle swarm optimization is developed. This approach takes the advantage of the channel correlation by exploiting the relationship between AP clustering solutions in adjacent TSs to improve the SE performance and reduce complexity. In the second stage, given the AP clustering solution obtained in the first stage, a distributed precoding algorithm is devised via applying the weighted minimum mean square error method. By combining these two stages, we propose a novel dynamic AP clustering and precoding algorithm (DAPC-Pre). The effectiveness of the proposed DAPC-Pre algorithm is verified by the simulation results. This paper focuses on improving indoor Wi-Fi localization by mitigating the effect of fluctuation of received signal strength indication (RSSI). The RSSI data collected at each reference point is first transformed through translation and scaling. The BP (Back Propagation) neural network is then used to construct the ranging model using the transformed RSSI to determine the distances between the target point and each reference point. A genetic algorithm (GA) is developed to optimize the initial values of weights and biases of the BP neural network. For convenience, our proposed ranging model is denoted as GTBPD. A new localization algorithm is then proposed, which uses the GTBPD model and the sequential quadratic programming (SQP, an iterative nonlinear optimization algorithm), and the algorithm is denoted as GTBPD-LSQP for simplicity. Experiments were conducted in three areas of two different teaching buildings with complex environments. The performance of the proposed GTBPD-LSQP algorithm is evaluated and compared with four existing algorithms. This paper studies the joint estimation of channel fading and user activity for the uplink of a grant-free massive machine-type communication system. Comparing with previous studies, we consider more practical aspects of the system, including non-i.i.d. signature matrices, low-resolution quantization, and random users activated by an unknown sparse rate. A new estimation algorithm, termed hybrid decentralized generalized expectation consistent (HyDeGEC), is then derived based on a hybrid network that applies scalar message passing for the prior inference and vector message passing for the likelihood inference. This new algorithm outperforms many state-of-the-art techniques in terms of robustness (to non-i.i.d. signatures), complexity (in computation per iteration), and/or estimation accuracy (of the channel and the activity rate). The state evolution of the algorithm is also analyzed, which, as validated by simulations, can capture precisely the algorithm’s per-iteration behavior in MSE. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising new paradigm to achieve high spectral and energy efficiency for future wireless networks by reconfiguring the wireless signal propagation via passive reflection. To reap the promising gains of IRS, channel state information (CSI) is essential, whereas channel estimation errors are inevitable in practice due to limited channel training resources. In this paper, in order to optimize the performance of IRS-aided multiuser communications with imperfect CSI, we propose to jointly design the active transmit precoding at the access point (AP) and passive reflection coefficients of the IRS, each consisting of not only the conventional phase shift and also the newly exploited amplitude variation. First, the achievable rate of each user is derived assuming a practical IRS channel estimation method, which shows that the interference due to CSI errors is intricately related to the AP transmit precoders, the channel training power and the IRS reflection coefficients during both channel training and data transmission. Next, for the single-user case, by combining the benefits of the penalty method, Dinkelbach method and block successive upper-bound minimization (BSUM) method, a new penalized Dinkelbach-BSUM algorithm is proposed to optimize the IRS reflection coefficients for maximizing the achievable data transmission rate subjected to CSI errors; while for the multiuser case, a new penalty dual decomposition (PDD)-based algorithm is proposed to maximize the users’ weighted sum-rate. Finally, simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms as compared to benchmark schemes. In particular, useful insights are drawn to characterize the effect of IRS reflection amplitude control (with/without the conventional phase-shift control) on the system performance under imperfect CSI. This paper investigates the design and performance of delayed bit-interleaved coded modulation (DBICM) with low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. For Gray labeled square M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations, we investigate the optimal delay scheme with the largest spectrum efficiency of DBICM for a fixed maximum number of delayed time slots and a given signal-to-noise ratio. When analyzing the capacity of DBICM, we find two important properties: the capacity improvement due to delayed coded bits being mapped to the real and imaginary parts of the transmitted symbols are independent of each other; a pair of delay schemes with delayed coded bits having identical bit-channel capacity lead to equivalent DBICM capacity. Using these two properties, we efficiently optimize the delay scheme for any uniform Gray-QAM systems. Furthermore, these two properties enable efficient LDPC code designs regarding unequal error protection via bit-channel type classifications. Moreover, we use protograph-based extrinsic information transfer charts to jointly optimize degree distributions and channel assignments of LDPC codes and propose a constrained progressive edge growth like algorithm to jointly construct LDPC codes and bit-interleavers for DBICM, taking distinctive bit-channel’s capacity into account. In Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) networks, where all vehicles and infrastructures are interconnected for information sharing, data dissemination is increasingly playing a significant role in superior and pluralistic communication services. To empower the efficiency of data dissemination, in this paper, we propose a novel unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled scheduling protocol consisting of a proactive caching policy and a file sharing strategy in V2X networks. In the proactive caching process, we deploy UAVs as flying base stations (BSs) with caching capability, where we propose a UAV dynamic trajectory scheduling (DTS) algorithm to optimize the caching duration. Whereas in the file sharing strategy, based on the previous vehicular caching status, we provide a framework of file sharing cycle for data dissemination scheduling and employ a channel prediction algorithm to alleviate communication overhead. Moreover, we propose a relay ordering algorithm to effectively improve the file sharing process. Simulation results demonstrate that, our proposed scheduling protocol can enhance the efficiency of data dissemination and achieve an improved network performance in terms of caching process, system throughput, and file sharing latency in V2X networks. In this paper, we present a low-complexity recursive approach for massive and scalable code-domain nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with applications to emerging low-capacity scenarios. The problem definition in this paper is inspired by three major requirements of the next generations of wireless networks. Firstly, the proposed scheme is particularly beneficial in low-capacity regimes which is important in practical scenarios of utmost interest such as the Internet-of-Things (IoT) and massive machine-type communication (mMTC). Secondly, we employ code-domain NOMA to efficiently share the scarce common resources among the users. Finally, the proposed recursive approach enables code-domain NOMA with low-complexity detection algorithms that are scalable with the number of users to satisfy the requirements of massive connectivity. To this end, we propose a novel encoding and decoding scheme for code-domain NOMA based on factorizing the pattern matrix, for assigning the available resource elements to the users, as the Kronecker product of several smaller factor matrices. As a result, both the pattern matrix design at the transmitter side and the mixed symbols’ detection at the receiver side can be performed over matrices with dimensions that are much smaller than the overall pattern matrix. Consequently, this leads to significant reduction in both the complexity and the latency of the detection. We present the detection algorithm for the general case of factor matrices. The proposed algorithm involves several recursions each involving certain sets of equations corresponding to a certain factor matrix. We then characterize the system performance in terms of average sum rate, latency, and detection complexity. Our latency and complexity analysis confirm the superiority of our proposed scheme in enabling large pattern matrices. Moreover, our numerical results for the average sum rate show that the proposed scheme provides better performance compared to straightforward code-domain NOMA with comparable complexity, especially at low-capacity regimes. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) have been recently considered as an energy-efficient solution for future wireless networks due to their fast and low-power configuration, which has increased potential in enabling massive connectivity and low-latency communications. Accurate and low-overhead channel estimation in RIS-based systems is one of the most critical challenges due to the usually large number of RIS unit elements and their distinctive hardware constraints. In this paper, we focus on the uplink of a RIS-empowered multi-user Multiple Input Single Output (MISO) uplink communication systems and propose a channel estimation framework based on the parallel factor decomposition to unfold the resulting cascaded channel model. We present two iterative estimation algorithms for the channels between the base station and RIS, as well as the channels between RIS and users. One is based on alternating least squares (ALS), while the other uses vector approximate message passing to iteratively reconstruct two unknown channels from the estimated vectors. To theoretically assess the performance of the ALS-based algorithm, we derived its estimation Cramér-Rao Bound (CRB). We also discuss the downlink achievable sum rate computation with estimated channels and different precoding schemes for the base station. Our extensive simulation results show that our algorithms outperform benchmark schemes and that the ALS technique achieves the CRB. It is also demonstrated that the sum rate using the estimated channels always reach that of perfect channels under various settings, thus, verifying the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed estimation algorithms. Conventional networks are based on layered protocols with intensive cross-layer interactions and complex signal processing at every node, making it difficult to meet the ultra-low latency requirement of mission critical applications in future communication systems. In this paper, we address this issue by proposing the concept of network template, which allows data to flow through it at the transmission symbol level, with minimal node processing. This is achieved by carefully calibrating the inter-connecting links among the nodes and pre-calculating the routing/network coding actions for each node, according to a set of preconfigured flows. In this paper, we focus on the minimum cost network template design to minimize the connections within the template, while ensuring that all the pre-defined configurations are feasible with the guaranteed throughput, latency and reliability. We show that the minimum cost network template design problem is difficult to solve optimally in general. We thus propose an efficient greedy algorithm to find a close-to-optimal solution. Simulation results show that the construction cost of the templates obtained by the proposed algorithm is very close to a lower bound. In this paper, we consider the downlink transmission of URLLC packets requiring very low latency and ultra-reliability. Because of the low latency constraint, the Base Station may not have enough time to acquire the instantaneous Channel State Information (CSI) of the corresponding device and has then to transmit urgent packets immediately in the absence of CSI. To enhance reliability, we explore frequency diversity where a packet can be simultaneously sent over multiple channels. Using a Markov Decision Process framework, we address the problem of dynamic channel allocation to the URLLC devices in absence of instantaneous CSI. More precisely, we define a multi-agent MDP wherein the state of each device is the packet loss rate experienced in the previous time slots and the decision variable is how to split the available orthogonal channels across the devices. We design a new low-complexity algorithm which avoids the exhaustive enumeration of all possible resource allocations and enables significant computational savings compared to the Value Iteration algorithm. We investigate the gap between our proposed low complexity algorithm and the Value Iteration policy. Fog radio access network (Fog-RAN), which pushes caching and computing capabilities to the network edge, is capable of efficiently delivering content to users by using carefully designed caching placement and content replacement algorithms. In this paper, the transmission scheme design and coding parameter optimization will be considered for coded caching in Fog-RAN, where the reliability of content delivery, i.e., content outage probability, is used as the performance metric. The problem will be formulated as a complicated multi-objective probabilistic combinatorial optimization. A novel maximum $b$ -matching approach will then be proposed to obtain the Pareto optimal solution with fairness constraint. Based on the fast message passing approach, a distributed algorithm with a low memory usage of $O(M+N)$ is also proposed, where $M$ is the number of users and $N$ is the number of fog access points (Fog-APs). Although it is usually very difficult to derive the closed-form formulas for the optimal solution, the approximation formulas of the content outage probability will also be obtained as a function of coding parameters. The asymptotic optimal coding parameters can then be obtained by defining and deriving the outage exponent region and diversity-multiplexing region. Simulation results will illustrate the accuracy of the theoretical derivations, and verify the outage performance of the proposed approach. Therefore, this paper not only proposes a practical distributed Fog-AP selection algorithm for coded caching but also provides a systematic way to evaluate and optimize the performance of Fog-RANs. Distribution matching is a fixed-length invertible mapping from a uniformly distributed bit sequence to shaped amplitudes and plays an important role in the probabilistic amplitude shaping framework. With conventional constant-composition distribution matching (CCDM), all output sequences have identical composition. In this paper, we propose multiset-partition distribution matching (MPDM), where the composition is constant over all output sequences. When considering the desired distribution as a multiset, MPDM corresponds to partitioning this multiset into equal-sized subsets. We show that MPDM allows addressing more output sequences and, thus, has a lower rate loss than CCDM in all nontrivial cases. By imposing some constraints on the partitioning, a constructive MPDM algorithm is proposed which comprises two parts. A variable-length prefix of the binary data word determines the composition to be used, and the remainder of the input word is mapped with a conventional CCDM algorithm, such as arithmetic coding, according to the chosen composition. Simulations of 64-ary quadrature amplitude modulation over the additive white Gaussian noise channel demonstrate that the block-length saving of MPDM over CCDM for a fixed gap to capacity is approximately a factor of 2.5–5 at medium to high signal-to-noise ratios. Multi-user spatial modulation (SM) assisted by sparse code multiple access (SCMA) has been recently proposed to provide uplink high spectral efficiency transmission. The message passing algorithm (MPA) is employed to detect the transmitted signals, which suffers from high complexity. This paper proposes three low-complexity algorithms for the first time to the SM-SCMA. The first algorithm is referred to as successive user detection (SUD), while the second algorithm is the modified version of SUD, namely modified SUD (MSUD). Then, for the first time, the tree-search of the SM-SCMA is constructed. Based on that tree-search, another variant of the sphere decoder (SD) is proposed for the SM-SCMA, referred to as fixed-complexity SD (FCSD). SUD provides a benchmark for decoding complexity at the expense of bit-error-rate (BER) performance. Further, MSUD slightly increases the complexity of SUD with a significant improvement in BER performance. Finally, FCSD provides a near-optimum BER with a considerable reduction of the complexity compared to the MPA decoder and also supports parallel hardware implementation. The proposed algorithms provide flexible design choices for practical implementation based on system design demands. The interpolation based algebraic soft decoding yields a high decoding performance for Reed-Solomon (RS) codes with a polynomial-time complexity. Its computationally expensive interpolation can be facilitated using the module structure. The desired Gröbner basis can be achieved by reducing the basis of a module. This paper proposes the low-complexity Chase (LCC) decoding algorithm using this module basis reduction (BR) interpolation technique, namely the LCC-BR algorithm. By identifying $\eta $ unreliable symbols, $2^\eta $ decoding test-vectors will be formulated. The LCC-BR algorithm first constructs a common basis which will be shared by the decoding of all test-vectors. This eliminates the redundant computation in decoding each test-vector, resulting in a lower decoding complexity and latency. This paper further proposes the progressive LCC-BR algorithm that decodes the test-vectors sequentially and terminates once the maximum-likelihood decision decoding outcome is reached. Exploiting the difference between the adjacent test-vectors, this progressive decoding is realized without any additional memory cost. A deep learning assisted sum-product detection algorithm (DL-SPDA) for faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling is proposed in this paper. The proposed detection algorithm works on a modified factor graph which concatenates a neural network function node to the variable nodes of the conventional FTN factor graph to approach the maximum a posterior probabilities (MAP) error performance. In specific, the neural network performs as a function node in the modified factor graph to deal with the residual intersymbol interference (ISI) that is not considered by the conventional detector with a limited complexity. We modify the updating rule in the conventional sum-product algorithm so that the neural network assisted detector can be complemented to a turbo equalization receiver. Furthermore, we propose a compatible training technique to improve the detection performance of the proposed DL-SPDA with turbo equalization. In particular, the neural network is optimized in terms of the mutual information between the transmitted sequence and the extrinsic information. We also investigate the maximum-likelihood bit error rate (BER) performance of a finite length coded FTN system. With growth in the number of smart devices and advancements in their hardware, in recent years, data-driven machine learning techniques have drawn significant attention. However, due to privacy and communication issues, it is not possible to collect this data at a centralized location. Federated learning is a machine learning setting where the centralized location trains a learning model over remote devices. Federated learning algorithms cannot be employed in the real world scenarios unless they consider unreliable and resource-constrained nature of the wireless medium. In this paper, we propose a federated learning algorithm that is suitable for cellular wireless networks. We prove its convergence, and provide a sub-optimal scheduling policy that improves the convergence rate. We also study the effect of local computation steps and communication steps on the convergence of the proposed algorithm. We prove, in practice, federated learning algorithms may solve a different problem than the one that they have been employed for if the unreliability of wireless channels is neglected. This paper investigates the energy efficiency (EE) optimization in downlink multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). In our research, the statistical channel state information (CSI) is exploited to reduce the signaling overhead. To maximize the minimum EE among the neighbouring cells, we design the transmit covariance matrices for each base station (BS). Specifically, optimization schemes for this max-min EE problem are developed, in the centralized and distributed ways, respectively. To obtain the transmit covariance matrices, we first find out the closed-form optimal transmit eigenmatrices for the BS in each cell, and convert the original transmit covariance matrices designing problem into a power allocation one. Then, to lower the computational complexity, we utilize an asymptotic approximation expression for the problem objective. Moreover, for the power allocation design, we adopt the minorization maximization method to address the non-convexity of the ergodic rate, and use Dinkelbach’s transform to convert the max-min fractional problem into a series of convex optimization subproblems. To tackle the transformed subproblems, we propose a centralized iterative water-filling scheme. For reducing the backhaul burden, we further develop a distributed algorithm for the power allocation problem, which requires limited inter-cell information sharing. In this paper, we propose a new method to design low-density parity-check Hadamard (LDPC-Hadamard) codes — a type of ultimate-Shannon-limit approaching channel codes. The technique is based on applying Hadamard constraints to the check nodes in a generalized protograph-based LDPC code, followed by lifting the generalized protograph. We name the codes formed protograph-based LDPC Hadamard (PLDPC-Hadamard) codes. We also propose a modified Protograph Extrinsic Information Transfer (PEXIT) algorithm for analyzing and optimizing PLDPC-Hadamard code designs. The proposed algorithm further allows the analysis of PLDPC-Hadamard codes with degree- 1 and/or punctured nodes. We find codes with decoding thresholds ranging from −1.53 dB to −1.42 dB. At a BER of 10−5, the gaps of our codes to the ultimate-Shannon-limit range from 0.40 dB (for rate = 0.0494) to 0.16 dB (for rate = 0.003). Moreover, the error performance of our codes is comparable to that of the traditional LDPC-Hadamard codes. Finally, the BER performances of our codes after puncturing are simulated and compared. This paper investigates the security problem of a multi-eavesdrop multiple-input-single-output (MISO) wiretap channel, where an N-antenna transmitter communicates with a single-antenna legitimate user in the presence of multiple single-antenna smart eavesdroppers. To overcome the security risk of the traditional secure constructive interference-based (CI-based) scheme when facing the smart eavesdroppers, we propose a novel deception scheme (DS) via a random transmission strategy, where the eavesdroppers are expected to decode the deception symbols correctly but unable to distinguish the authenticity of the decoded symbol. Then, an efficient algorithm is proposed for the deception signal-to interference-plus-noise (SINR)-balancing problem when perfect channel state information (CSI) is assumed. Furthermore, we consider a practical scenario where only imperfect CSI is available, and explore two different methods for the deception optimization problem, i.e., convexification relaxation approach (CRA) and Lagrangian relaxation approach (LRA), respectively. For both CSI cases, a closed-form solution to the considered CI-based deception scheme is obtained. Simulation results validate the superiority of the proposed approach over traditional secure precoding schemes, and also demonstrate the significant computation efficiency improvements for the proposed algorithms. Hardware distortions (HWDs) render drastic effects on the performance of communication systems. They are recently proven to bear asymmetric signatures; and hence can be efficiently mitigated using improper Gaussian signaling (IGS), thanks to its additional design degrees of freedom. Discrete asymmetric signaling (AS) can practically realize the IGS by shaping the signals’ geometry or probability. In this paper, we adopt the probabilistic shaping (PS) instead of uniform symbols to mitigate the impact of HWDs and derive the optimal maximum a posterior detector. Then, we design the symbols’ probabilities to minimize the error rate performance while accommodating the improper nature of HWD. Although the design problem is a non-convex optimization problem, we simplified it using successive convex programming and propose an iterative algorithm. We further present a hybrid shaping (HS) design to gain the combined benefits of both PS and geometric shaping (GS). Finally, extensive numerical results and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations highlight the superiority of the proposed PS over conventional uniform constellation and GS. This paper studies an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided wireless powered sensor network (WPSN). Specifically, a power station (PS) provides wireless energy to multiple internet of thing (IoT) devices which supports them to deliver their own messages to an access point (AP). Moreover, we deploy an IRS to enhance the performance of the WPSN by intelligently adjusting the phase shift of each reflecting element. To evaluate the performance of the IRS assisted WPSN, we maximize its sum throughput to jointly optimize the phase shift matrices and the transmission time allocations. Due to the non-convexity of the formulated optimization problem, we first derive the optimal phase shifts of the wireless information transfer (WIT) in closed-form. Consequently, a semi-definite programming (SDP) relaxed approach is considered to jointly design the phase shift matrix of the wireless energy transfer (WET) and the transmission time allocations. In addition, we propose a low complexity scheme to gain insights and reduce the computational complexity incurred by the SDP relaxed scheme. Specifically, the optimal solutions of the phase shifts and the transmission time allocation are derived in closed-form by the Majorization-Minimization (MM) algorithm, the Lagrange dual method and the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. Finally, numerical results are presented to validate the proposed schemes and confirm the beneficial role of the IRS in comparison to the benchmark schemes, where the proposed IRS assisted scheme achieves almost 100% higher sum throughput, in comparison to the counterpart without IRS. In this paper, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted spectrum sharing underlay cognitive radio (CR) wiretap channel (WTC) is studied, and we aim at enhancing the secrecy rate of secondary user in this channel subject to total power constraint at secondary transmitter (ST), interference power constraint (IPC) at primary receiver (PR) as well as unit modulus constraint at IRS. Due to extra IPC and eavesdropper (Eve) are considered, all the existing solutions for enhancing secrecy rate of IRS-assisted non-CR WTC as well as enhancing transmission rate in IRS-assisted CR channel without eavesdropper fail in this work. Therefore, we propose new numerical solutions to optimize the secrecy rate of this channel under full primary, secondary users’ channel state information (CSI) and three different cases of Eve’s CSI: full CSI, imperfect CSI with bounded estimation error, and no CSI. To solve the difficult non-convex optimization problem, an efficient alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is proposed to jointly optimize the beamformer at ST and phase shift coefficients at IRS. In particular, when optimizing the phase shift coefficients during each iteration of AO, a Dinkelbach based solution in combination with successive approximation and penalty based solution is proposed under full CSI and a penalty convex-concave procedure solution is proposed under imperfect Eve’s CSI. For no Eve’s CSI case, artificial noise (AN) aided approach is adopted to help enhancing the secrecy rate. Simulation results show that our proposed solutions for the IRS-assisted design greatly enhance the secrecy performance compared with the existing numerical solutions with and without IRS under full and imperfect Eve’s CSI. And positive secrecy rate can be achieved by our proposed AN aided approach given most channel realizations under no Eve’s CSI case so that secure communication also can be guaranteed. A decoding algorithm for polar (sub)codes with binary 2t × 2t polarization kernels is presented. It is based on the window processing (WP) method, which exploits the linear relationship of the polarization kernels and the Arikan matrix. This relationship enables one to compute the kernel input symbols probabilities by computing the probabilities of several paths in Arikan successive cancellation (SC) decoder. In this paper we propose an improved version of WP, which has significantly lower arithmetic complexity and operates in log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) domain. The algorithm identifies and reuses common subexpressions arising in computation of Arikan SC path scores. The proposed algorithm is applied to kernels of size 16 and 32 with improved polarization properties. It enables polar (sub)codes with the considered kernels to simultaneously provide better performance and lower decoding complexity compared with polar (sub)codes with Arikan kernel. In this paper, a novel reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) symbiotic radio (SR) system is proposed, in which an RIS, operating as a secondary transmitter (STx), sends messages to a multi-antenna secondary receiver (SRx) by using cognitive backscattering communication, and simultaneously, it enhances the primary transmission from a multi-antenna primary transmitter (PTx) to a multi-antenna primary receiver (PRx) by intelligently reconfiguring the wireless environment. We are interested in the joint design of active transmit beamformer at the PTx and passive reflecting beamformer at the STx to minimize the total transmit power at the PTx, subject to the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) constraint for the secondary transmission and the rate constraint for the primary transmission. Due to the non-convexity of the formulated problem, we decouple the original problem into a series of subproblems using the alternating optimization method and then iteratively solve them. The convergence performance and computational complexity of the proposed algorithm are analyzed. Furthermore, we develop a low-complexity algorithm to design the reflecting beamformer by solving a backscatter link enhancement problem through the semi-definite relaxation (SDR) technique. Then, theoretical analysis is performed to reveal the insights of the proposed system. To enhance spectrum efficiency for the future Internet-of-Things, in this paper, we investigate the joint subcarrier and power allocation problem for a full-duplex network with machine-to-machine nodes and cellular nodes. We aim to maximize the network spectral efficiency while achieving individual quality-of-service (QoS) requirements, considering imperfect and partial channel state information. The spectral efficiency maximization problem is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem and proved to be NP-hard. To make it more tractable, we first solve the coupling between subcarrier assignment and power allocation variables by replacing the product of two variables with one auxiliary variable. We then relax the binary subcarrier assignment variables to integer variables and introduce penalty terms to penalize the objective function. Majorization minimization method is adopted to further handle the coupling between uplink and downlink due to full-duplex transmission. We prove that the proposed joint resource allocation scheme converges to local optimal solution. In recent years, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have unlocked numerous sensing applications, which are expected to add billions of dollars to the world economy in the next decade. To further improve the Quality-of-Service in these applications, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project has considered the use of terrestrial cellular networks to support UAV sensing services, also known as the cellular Internet of UAVs. In this paper, we consider a cellular Internet of UAVs, where the sensory data can be transmitted either to the base station via cellular links, or to the mobile devices by underlay UAV-to-Device (U2D) communications. To evaluate the freshness of the sensory data, the concept of age of information (AoI) is adopted, in which a lower AoI implies fresher data. Since UAVs’ AoIs are determined by their trajectories during sensing and transmission, we investigate the AoI minimization problem for UAVs by designing their trajectories. This problem is a Markov decision problem with an infinite state-action space, and thus we utilize multi-agent deep reinforcement learning to approximate the state-action space. Then, we propose a multi-UAV trajectory design algorithm to solve this problem. We propose a holographic version of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) and investigate its application to terahertz (THz) massive multiple-input multiple-output systems. Capitalizing on the miniaturization of THz electronic components, RISs can be implemented by densely packing sub-wavelength unit cells, so as to realize continuous or quasi-continuous apertures and to enable holographic communications. In this paper, in particular, we derive the beam pattern of a holographic RIS. Our analysis reveals that the beam pattern of an ideal holographic RIS can be well approximated by that of an ultra-dense RIS, which has a more practical hardware architecture. In addition, we propose a closed-loop channel estimation (CE) scheme to effectively estimate the broadband channels that characterize THz massive MIMO systems aided by holographic RISs. The proposed CE scheme includes a downlink coarse CE stage and an uplink finer-grained CE stage. The uplink pilot signals are judiciously designed for obtaining good CE performance. Moreover, to reduce the pilot overhead, we introduce a compressive sensing-based CE algorithm, which exploits the dual sparsity of THz MIMO channels in both the angular domain and delay domain. In this paper, we investigate the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided simultaneous uplink and downlink transmission networks, where one UAV acting as a disseminator is connected to multiple access points (AP), and the other UAV acting as a base station (BS) collects data from numerous sensor nodes (SNs). The goal of this paper is to maximize the system throughput by jointly optimizing the 3D UAV trajectory, communication scheduling, and UAV-AP/SN transmit power. We first consider a special case where the UAV-BS and UAV-AP trajectories are pre-determined. Although the resulting problem is an integer and non-convex optimization problem, a globally optimal solution is obtained by applying the polyblock outer approximation (POA) method based on the problem’s hidden monotonic structure. Subsequently, for the general case considering the 3D UAV trajectory optimization, an efficient iterative algorithm is proposed to alternately optimize the divided sub-problems based on the successive convex approximation (SCA) technique. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed design is able to achieve significant system throughput gain over the benchmarks. Bufferless and single-buffer queueing systems have recently been shown to be effective in coping with escalated Age of Information (AoI) figures arising in single-source status update systems with large buffers and FCFS scheduling. In this paper, for the single-source scenario, we propose a numerical algorithm for obtaining the exact distributions of both the AoI and the peak AoI (PAoI) in (i) the bufferless $PH/PH/1/1/P(p)$ queue with probabilistic preemption with preemption probability $p$ , $0 \leq p \leq 1$ , and (ii) the single buffer $M/PH/1/2/R(r)$ queue with probabilistic replacement of the packet in the queue by the new arrival with replacement probability $r$ , $0 \leq r \leq 1$. The proposed exact models are based on the well-established theory of Markov Fluid Queues (MFQ) and the numerical algorithms are matrix-analytical and they rely on numerically stable and efficient vector-matrix operations. Moreover, the obtained exact distributions are in matrix exponential form, making it amenable to calculate the tail probabilities and the associated moments straightforwardly. Firstly, we validate the accuracy of the proposed method with simulations, and for sume sub-cases, with existing closed-form results. With the rapid development of cloud computing, the user-centric networks with the baseband unit pool have attracted a great deal of attentions in academic and industrial fields. However, limited fronthaul capacity and computation resource have become the bottlenecks inevitably. Thus, this paper investigates the power-efficient transmission in user-centric networks by considering both fronthaul capacity and computation resource constraints, where multiple access points (APs) and user equipments (UEs) are distributed. Specifically, a joint optimization of the beamforming vectors, AP-UE association strategy and transmission time is proposed to minimize the total power consumption (TPC). The formulated mixed integer non-linear problem (MINLP) is NP-hard. To address this problem, the MINLP is first transformed into a convex one via the successive convex approximation and semidefinite relaxation methods. Then, an iterative but effective algorithm is designed by using the property of the solution and applying the Lagrangian dual method. In this paper, we study a joint placement, resource allocation, and user association problem for UAV-assisted wireless networks with constrained backhaul links, where multiple UAV-mounted base stations (UBSs) are deployed to provide wireless services for ground users. We propose a novel framework to maximize the user throughput within the flight-time of UBSs and provides fairness among the users. We first obtain the optimal resource allocation schemes based on different fronthaul and backhaul conditions, and an efficient iterative algorithm is then developed to jointly optimize user association and UBS placement. The optimal UBS placement can be achieved by solving an unconstrained optimization problem which is a simplification of the initial constrained optimization problem based on the optimal resource allocation. We develop a dual-domain coordinated descent and bipartite graph matching based sub-process to identify an optimal user association that prefers the nearby UBSs, as the user association under constrained backhaul links have non-unique optimal solutions. Extensive simulations are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, and results show that our proposed method under constrained backhaul can improve both the average throughput by 49% and the fairness among the users by 47% in comparison with the method under ideal backhaul. In the incoming communication system, especially for the battery constrained Internet of Things devices, consumption of power resources will be a critical performance metric. This point shows importance when throughput minimal requirement and interference limit have been carried out. This paper investigates such a power allocation problem in a multiple-parallel-channel wireless system to minimize the sum power consumed by the entire system, while meeting the sum power constrains for each group of channels and the whole system as well as meeting the throughput constraints for each of the groups and the system. Sum power minimization itself is also a key issue for margin-adaptive loading. Resorting to geometric concepts, an algorithm named as the group virtual bottom power water-filling (GVB-PWF) is proposed to solve the problem, including the large-scale problems, which computes the exact solution with a low degree of the polynomial computational complexity. Optimality of the proposed algorithm is also proved strictly. To the best of our knowledge, no prior algorithm in the open literature offered such an optimal solution to the proposed problem, with the merit of exactness and efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed power allocation algorithm uses less power about 25%, compared with the popular primal-dual interior-point method with the same amount of computations. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising new technology for achieving both spectrum and energy efficient wireless communication systems in the future. However, existing works on IRS mainly consider frequency-flat channels and assume perfect knowledge of channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter. Motivated by the above, in this paper we study an IRS-enhanced orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system under frequency-selective channels and propose a practical transmission protocol with channel estimation. First, to reduce the overhead in channel training as well as exploit the channel spatial correlation, we propose a novel IRS elements grouping method, where each group consists of a set of adjacent IRS elements that share a common reflection coefficient. Based on this method, we propose a practical transmission protocol where only the combined channel of each group needs to be estimated, thus substantially reducing the training overhead. Next, with any given grouping and estimated CSI, we formulate the problem to maximize the achievable rate by jointly optimizing the transmit power allocation and the IRS passive array reflection coefficients. Although the formulated problem is non-convex and thus difficult to solve, we propose an efficient algorithm to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution for it, by alternately optimizing the power allocation and the passive array coefficients in an iterative manner, along with a customized method for the initialization. Simulation results show that the proposed design significantly improves the OFDM link rate performance as compared to the case without using IRS. Moreover, it is shown that there exists an optimal size for IRS elements grouping which achieves the maximum achievable rate due to the practical trade-off between the training overhead and IRS passive beamforming flexibility. For decoding low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, the attenuated min-sum algorithm (AMSA) and the offset min-sum algorithm (OMSA) can outperform the conventional min-sum algorithm (MSA) at low signal-to-noise-ratios (SNRs), i.e., in the “waterfall region” of the bit error rate curve. This paper demonstrates that, for quantized decoders, MSA actually outperforms AMSA and OMSA in the “error floor” region, and that all three algorithms suffer from a relatively high error floor. This motivates the introduction of a modified MSA that is designed to outperform MSA, AMSA, and OMSA across all SNRs. The new algorithm is based on the assumption that trapping sets are the major cause of the error floor for quantized LDPC decoders. A performance estimation tool based on trapping sets is used to verify the effectiveness of the new algorithm and also to guide parameter selection. We also show that the implementation complexity of the new algorithm is only slightly higher than that of AMSA or OMSA. Finally, the simulated performance of the new algorithm, using several classes of LDPC codes (including spatially coupled LDPC codes), is shown to outperform MSA, AMSA, and OMSA across all SNRs. Existing decentralized coded caching solutions cannot guarantee small loads in the general scenario with arbitrary file sizes and cache sizes. In this paper, we propose an optimization framework for decentralized coded caching in the general scenario to minimize the worst-case load and average load (under an arbitrary file popularity), respectively. Specifically, we first propose a class of decentralized coded caching schemes for the general scenario, which are specified by a general caching parameter and include several known schemes as special cases. Then, we optimize the caching parameter to minimize the worst-case load and average load, respectively. Each of the two optimization problems is a challenging nonconvex problem with a nondifferentiable objective function. For each optimization problem, we develop an iterative algorithm to obtain a stationary point using techniques for solving Complementary Geometric Programming (GP). We also obtain a low-complexity approximate solution by solving an approximate problem with a differentiable objective function which is an upper bound on the original nondifferentiable one, and characterize the performance loss caused by the approximation. Finally, we present two information-theoretic converse bounds on the worst-case load and average load (under an arbitrary file popularity) in the general scenario, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that provides optimization-based decentralized coded caching schemes and information-theoretic converse bounds for the general scenario. This paper explores the application of physical-layer network coding (PNC) for short-packet transmissions. PNC can potentially reduce the communication delay in relay-assisted wireless networks and can thus be instrumental in realizing short-packet communication systems with stringent delay requirements. In this work, first, we first derive an achievability bound for channel-coded short-packet PNC systems. Based on the random-coding error-exponent, the bound serves as a benchmark for short-packet PNC operating with traditional preamble-aided channel estimation and XOR channel decoding. Second, we design a blind channel estimation algorithm and a code-aided channel estimation algorithm for short-packet PNC systems. Both outperform the traditional preamble-aided channel estimation for PNC systems operating with mismatched channel-state-information. As a case study, we compare the three algorithms for packets of 128 symbols over a two-way relay channel. The results show that the blind algorithm outperforms the code-aided algorithm and preamble-aided algorithm by almost 0.2 and 1.5 dB respectively. Furthermore, the blind algorithm achieves the target packet error rate of 10−4 within 0.5 dB of the random coding bound of an imaginary system in which perfect channel-state-information is available at the relay at no cost (i.e., channel estimation is not required in the imaginary system). The line-of-sight (LoS) dominant air-ground channels have posed critical interference issues in cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications. In this paper, we propose a new base station (BS) cooperative beamforming (CB) technique for the cellular downlink to mitigate the strong interference caused by the co-channel terrestrial transmissions to the UAV. Besides the conventional CB by cooperatively transmitting the UAV’s message, the serving BSs of the UAV exploit a novel CB-based interference transmission scheme to effectively suppress the terrestrial interference to the UAV. Specifically, the co-channel terrestrial users’ messages are shared with the UAV’s serving BSs and transmitted via CB so as to cancel their resultant interference at the UAV’s receiver. To optimally balance between the CB gains for UAV signal enhancement and terrestrial interference cancellation, we formulate a new problem to maximize the UAV’s receive signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) by jointly optimizing the power allocations at all of its serving BSs for transmitting the UAV’s and co-channel terrestrial users’ messages. First, we derive the closed-form optimal solution to this problem in the special case of one serving BS for the UAV and draw useful insights. Then, we propose an algorithm to solve the problem optimally in the general case. As the optimal solution requires centralized implementation with exorbitant message/channel information exchanges among the BSs, we further propose a distributed algorithm that is amenable to practical implementation, based on a new divide-and-conquer approach, whereby each co-channel BS divides its perceived interference to the UAV into multiple portions, each to be canceled by a different serving BS of the UAV with its best effort. Numerical results show that the proposed centralized and distributed CB schemes with interference transmission and cancellation (ITC) can both significantly improve the UAV’s downlink performance as compared to the conventional CB without applying ITC. Staircase codes (SCCs) are typically decoded using iterative bounded-distance decoding (BDD) and hard decisions. In this paper, a novel decoding algorithm is proposed, which partially uses soft information from the channel. The proposed algorithm is based on marking certain number of highly reliable and highly unreliable bits. These marked bits are used to improve the miscorrection-detection capability of the SCC decoder and the error-correcting capability of BDD. For SCCs with 2-error-correcting Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem component codes, our algorithm improves upon standard SCC decoding by up to 0.30 dB at a bit-error rate (BER) of 10−7. The proposed algorithm is shown to achieve almost half of the gain achievable by a genie decoder with this structure. The increased complexity caused by bit marking and additional calls to the component BDD decoder is discussed as well. Our algorithm is also extended (with minor modifications) to product codes. Power domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), with the ability to serve multiple users within one resource block, is one of the most promising technologies for the fifth generation. In this paper, we study the downlink millimeter wave (mmWave) NOMA-based system, where the base station sends messages to multiple clusters and serves multiple users simultaneously, and sum-rate maximization problem is investigated. Since users are multiplexed on one resource block, user clustering is important for NOMA and has a great influence on sum-rate optimization problem. Inspired by correlation features of users’ spatial distributions in mmWave NOMA-based system, we introduce unsupervised learning method into user clustering. We first develop an Expectation Maximization (EM)-based algorithm in fixed user scenario. Then, the dynamic user scenario is introduced, which includes user reduction, increment and movement situations. After that, an online EM-based clustering algorithm is proposed to fast update user distribution parameters with lower computational complexity compared to the conventional complete re-clustering methods. Simulation results show that the proposed EM-based algorithm can improve the performance of NOMA-based system in fixed user scenario. In addition, the proposed online EM-based algorithm can achieve similar performance as the complete EM-based algorithm with less computational complexity in dynamic user scenario. In a Non-Orthogonal Unicast and Multicast (NOUM) transmission system, a multicast stream intended to all the receivers is superimposed in the power domain on the unicast streams. One layer of Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) is required at each receiver to remove the multicast stream before decoding its intended unicast stream. In this paper, we first show that a linearly-precoded 1-layer Rate-Splitting (RS) strategy at the transmitter can efficiently exploit this existing SIC receiver architecture. By splitting the unicast messages into common and private parts and encoding the common parts along with the multicast message into a super-common stream decoded by all users, the SIC is better reused for the dual purpose of separating the unicast and multicast streams as well as better managing the multi-user interference among the unicast streams. We further propose multi-layer transmission strategies based on the generalized RS and power-domain Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA). Two different objectives are studied for the design of the precoders, namely, maximizing the Weighted Sum Rate (WSR) of the unicast messages and maximizing the system Energy Efficiency (EE), both subject to Quality of Service (QoS) rate requirements of all messages and a sum power constraint. A Weighted Minimum Mean Square Error (WMMSE)-based algorithm and a Successive Convex Approximation (SCA)-based algorithm are proposed to solve the WSR and EE problems, respectively. Numerical results show that the proposed RS-assisted NOUM transmission strategies are more spectrally and energy efficient than the conventional Multi-User Linear-Precoding (MU–LP), Orthogonal Multiple Access (OMA) and power-domain NOMA in a wide range of user deployments (with a diversity of channel directions, channel strengths and qualities of channel state information at the transmitter) and network loads (underloaded and overloaded regimes). In this paper, we investigate the energy-efficient resource allocation problem in an uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) millimeter wave system, where the fully-connected-based sparse radio frequency chain antenna structure is applied at the base station (BS). To relieve the pilot overhead for channel estimation, we propose a codebook-based analog beam design scheme, which only requires to obtain the equivalent channel gain. On this basis, users belonging to the same analog beam are served via NOMA. Meanwhile, an advanced NOMA decoding scheme is proposed by exploiting the global information available at the BS. Under predefined minimum rate and maximum transmit power constraints for each user, we formulate a max-min user energy efficiency (EE) optimization problem by jointly optimizing the detection matrix at the BS and transmit power at the users. We first transform the original fractional objective function into a subtractive one. Then, we propose a two-loop iterative algorithm to solve the reformulated problem. Specifically, the inner loop updates the detection matrix and transmit power iteratively, while the outer loop adopts the bi-section method. Meanwhile, to decrease the complexity of the inner loop, we propose a zero-forcing (ZF)-based iterative algorithm, where the detection matrix is designed via the ZF technique. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed schemes obtain a better performance in terms of spectral efficiency and EE than the conventional schemes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
