One of the most widely used measures of scientific impact is the number of citations. However, due to its heavy-tailed distribution, citations are fundamentally difficult to predict but can be improved. This study was aimed at investigating the factors and parts influencing the citation number of a scientific paper in the otology field. Therefore, this work proposes a new solution that utilizes machine learning and natural language processing to process English text and provides a paper citation as the predicted results. Different algorithms are implemented in this solution, such as linear regression, boosted decision tree, decision forest, and neural networks. The application of neural network regression revealed that papers' abstracts have more influence on the citation numbers of otological articles. This new solution has been developed in visual programming using Microsoft Azure machine learning at the back end and Programming Without Coding Technology at the front end. Artificial intelligence (AI) scholars and mediciners have reported AI systems that accurately detect medical imaging and COVID-19 in chest images. However, the robustness of these models remains unclear for the segmentation of images with nonuniform density distribution or the multiphase target. The most representative one is the Chan-Vese (CV) image segmentation model. In this paper, we demonstrate that the recent level set (LV) model has excellent performance on the detection of target characteristics from medical imaging relying on the filtering variational method based on the global medical pathology facture. We observe that the capability of the filtering variational method to obtain image feature quality is better than other LV models. This research reveals a far-reaching problem in medical-imaging AI knowledge detection. In addition, from the analysis of experimental results, the algorithm proposed in this paper has a good effect on detecting the lung region feature information of COVID-19 images and also proves that the algorithm has good adaptability in processing different images. Surgery is one of the larger wounds in conventional surgery, and patients often experience different pain and postural discomfort after surgery. With the ever-changing standards of medical care and patient care requirements, providing high-quality care to postoperative patients is an important measure to reduce complications and promote rapid recovery. However, in the traditional postsurgical nursing methods, there are often the phenomenon that wrong patients are connected, patient data is messy, and medicines are counted incorrectly, which directly leads to a rapid decline in nursing efficiency. In the context of the rapid development of artificial intelligence and big data, intelligent medical data analysis technology has gradually been integrated into the medical field. This paper analyzes and studies the application effect of intelligent medical data analysis technology in postoperative nursing. It is aimed at changing the traditional postoperative nursing methods and improving nursing efficiency, and it provides important suggestions for the development of postoperative nursing in the new era. Combining big data and Internet of Things technology, this paper builds a smart medical Internet of Things framework and an intelligent postoperative care system and uses machine learning algorithms to preprocess relevant medical data. Healthcare occupies a central role in sustainable societies and has an undeniable impact on the well-being of individuals. However, over the years, various diseases have adversely affected the growth and sustainability of these societies. Among them, heart disease is escalating rapidly in both economically settled and undeveloped nations and leads to fatalities around the globe. To reduce the death ratio caused by this disease, there is a need for a framework to continuously monitor a patient's heart status, essentially doing early detection and prediction of heart disease. This paper proposes a scalable Machine Learning (ML) and Internet of Things-(IoT-) based three-layer architecture to store and process a large amount of clinical data continuously, which is needed for the early detection and monitoring of heart disease. Layer 1 of the proposed framework is used to collect data from IoT wearable/implanted smart sensor nodes, which includes various physiological measures that have significant impact on the deterioration of heart status. Layer 2 stores and processes the patient data on a local web server using various ML classification algorithms. Finally, Layer 3 is used to store the critical data of patients on the cloud. The doctor and other caregivers can access the patient health conditions via an android application, provide services to the patient, and inhibit him/her from further damage. Various performance evaluation measures such as accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, F1-measure, MCC-score, and ROC curve are used to check the efficiency of our proposed IoT-based heart disease prediction framework. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most generally known neurodegenerative disorder, leading to a steady deterioration in cognitive ability. Deep learning models have shown outstanding performance in the diagnosis of AD, and these models do not need any handcrafted feature extraction over conventional machine learning algorithms. Since the 2012 AlexNet accomplishment, the convolutional neural network (CNN) has been progressively utilized by the medical community to assist practitioners to early diagnose AD. This paper explores the current cutting edge applications of CNN on single and multimodality (combination of two or more modalities) neuroimaging data for the classification of AD. An exhaustive systematic search is conducted on four notable databases: Google Scholar, IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, and PubMed in June 2021. The objective of this study is to examine the effectiveness of classification approaches on AD to analyze different kinds of datasets, neuroimaging modalities, preprocessing techniques, and data handling methods. With the increasing popularity of online foreign language teaching and learning practice, learners and teachers have developed a high demand for evaluation of teaching effectiveness. When we focus discussion on international Chinese teaching, which has been developed for a relatively short time and not experienced enough, online teaching effectiveness evaluation has become an important obstacle to the development of teaching. This paper introduces a hybrid technique based on fuzzy evaluation method, for determining and suggesting possible types of errors in international Chinese online listening and speaking instruction and giving suggestions for improvement. The system can help learners to identify and determine the types of errors in Chinese listening and speaking learning in a timely manner and make a more objective and comprehensive evaluation of learning performance; at the same time, it helps teachers to trace the effectiveness of teaching design and implementation in a targeted manner and make corresponding scientific decisions. All organisms contain antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), which are a critical component of the innate immune system. These chemicals have the ability to suppress the growth of a variety of fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Because AMPs interact with structural components of the microbial cell membrane and have a wide range of cellular targets, bacteria are unlikely to be able to develop resistance to them in the short term. The underlying structure of AMPs is critical in determining the selectivity with which they target their respective targets. As far as we know, peptides have not been tested in a lab to see if they can fight bacteria, fungus, and viruses in real life. In this paper, we develop an artificial neural network (ANN) using a back propagation neural network (BPNN) that enables optimal classification of tendency of a peptide sequence that involves the activities of antifungal, antibacterial, or antiviral. The BPNN is trained on the datasets collected across different repositories and then the overfitting is avoided using particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Hence, at the time of testing, the BPNN clearly finds the predicted samples belonging to the same classes and this avoids the problem of finding the false positives. The simulation is conducted to test the efficacy of the model against various metrics that includes accuracy, precision, recall, and f1-measure. The effectiveness of the BPNN-PSO model in classifying instances at a faster rate than other techniques is demonstrated by its performance. Objective. Internet of Things (IoT) integrates several technologies where devices learn from the experience of each other thereby reducing human-intervened likely errors. Modern technologies like IoT and machine learning enable the conventional to patient-specific approach transition in healthcare. In conventional approach, the biggest challenge faced by healthcare professionals is to predict a disease by observing the symptoms, monitoring the remote area patient, and also attending to the patient all the time after being hospitalised. IoT provides real-time data, makes decision-making smarter, and provides far superior analytics, and all these to help improve the quality of healthcare. The main objective of the work was to create an IoT-based automated system using machine learning models for symptom-based COVID-19 prognosis. Methods. Comparative analysis of predictive microbiology of COVID-19 from case symptoms using various machine learning classifiers like logistics regression, k-nearest neighbor, support vector machine, random forest, decision trees, Naïve Bayes, and gradient booster is reported here. For the sake of the validation and verification of the models, performance of each model based on the retrieved cloud-stored data was measured for accuracy. Results. From the accuracy plot, it was concluded that k-NN was more accurate (97.97%) followed by decision tree (97.79), support vector machine (97.42), logistics regression (96.50), random forest (90.66), gradient boosting classifier (87.77), and Naïve Bayes (73.50) in COVID-19 prognosis. Conclusion. The paper presents a health monitoring IoT framework having high clinical significance in real-time and remote healthcare monitoring. There are many thyroid diseases affecting people all over the world. Many diseases affect the thyroid gland, like hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and thyroid cancer. Thyroid inefficiency can cause severe symptoms in patients. Effective classification and machine learning play a significant role in the timely detection of thyroid diseases. This timely classification will indeed affect the timely treatment of the patients. Automatic and precise thyroid nodule detection in ultrasound pictures is critical for reducing effort and radiologists' mistake rate. Medical images have evolved into one of the most valuable and consistent data sources for machine learning generation. In this paper, various machine learning algorithms like decision tree, random forest algorithm, KNN, and artificial neural networks on the dataset create a comparative analysis to better predict the disease based on parameters established from the dataset. Also, the dataset has been manipulated for accurate prediction for the classification. The classification was performed on both the sampled and unsampled datasets for better comparison of the dataset. To observe the clinical efficacy of early enteral nutrition application in critically ill neurosurgical patients, in this paper, we have developed a prediction model for enteral nutrition support in neurosurgical intensive care patients which is primarily based on an integrated learning algorithm. Additionally, we have compared the prediction performance of each model. The patients were divided into control and combined treatment groups according to the random number table method, and 175 patients in each group were treated with a parenteral method and early enteral nutrition support, respectively. A reentry ICU prediction model based on the integrated learning method random forest, adaptive boosting (AdaBoost), and gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) was developed, and the prediction performance of integrated learning and logistic regression was compared. The average sensitivity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, false-positive rate, false-negative rate, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC), and Brier score after fivefold cross-validation were used to evaluate model effects, and the best performance model based on the top 10 predictor variables in order of importance was given. Among all models, GBDT (AUROC = 0.858) was better than random forest (AUROC = 0.827) and slightly better than AdaBoost (AUROC = 0.851). The GBDT algorithm gave a higher ranking of importance for variables such as mean arterial pressure, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, urine volume, and blood creatinine and relatively poorer cardiovascular and renal function in neurosurgical intensive care patients. In keratoconus, the cornea assumes a conical shape due to its thinning and protrusion. Early detection of keratoconus is vital in preventing vision loss or costly repairs. In corneal topography maps, curvature and steepness can be distinguished by the colour scales, with warm colours representing curved steep areas and cold colours representing flat areas. With the advent of machine learning algorithms like convolutional neural networks (CNN), the identification and classification of keratoconus from these topography maps have been made faster and more accurate. The classification and grading of keratoconus depend on the colour scales used. Artefacts and minimal variations in the corneal shape, in mild or developing keratoconus, are not represented clearly in the image gradients. Segmentation of the maps needs to be carried out for identifying the severity of the keratoconus as well as for identifying the changes in the severity. In this paper, we are considering the use of particle swarm optimisation and its modifications for segmenting the topography image. Pretrained CNN models are then trained with the dataset and tested. Results show that the performance of the system in terms of accuracy is 95.9% compared to 93%, 95.3%, and 84% available in the literature for a 3-class classification that involved mild keratoconus or forme fruste keratoconus. In the current study, our goal was to obtain a robust model to predict the speed of sound in biodiesel. For this purpose, an extensive databank has been extracted from previously published papers. Then, a Support Vector Machine (SVM) has been optimized by Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) method to analyze these data and determine the correlation between speed of sound in biodiesel and its related properties including pressure, temperature, molecular weight, and normal melting point. The results were very satisfactory because the values of statistical parameters R 2 and RMSE were obtained 1 and 1.4024, respectively. Here, this is the first time that the sensitivity analysis is used to estimate this target value. This analysis shows that the pressure widely affects the output values with relevancy factor 87.92. As one of important epigenetic modifications, DNA N4-methylcytosine (4mC) plays a crucial role in controlling gene replication, expression, cell cycle, DNA replication, and differentiation. The accurate identification of 4mC sites is necessary to understand biological functions. In the paper, we use ensemble learning to develop a model named i4mC-EL to identify 4mC sites in the mouse genome. Firstly, a multifeature encoding scheme consisting of Kmer and EIIP was adopted to describe the DNA sequences. Secondly, on the basis of the multifeature encoding scheme, we developed a stacked ensemble model, in which four machine learning algorithms, namely, BayesNet, NaiveBayes, LibSVM, and Voted Perceptron, were utilized to implement an ensemble of base classifiers that produce intermediate results as input of the metaclassifier, Logistic. The experimental results on the independent test dataset demonstrate that the overall rate of predictive accurate of i4mC-EL is 82.19%, which is better than the existing methods. This work delivers a novel technique to detect brain tumor with the help of enhanced watershed modeling integrated with a modified ResNet50 architecture. It also involves stochastic approaches to help in developing enhanced watershed modeling. Cancer diseases, primarily the brain tumor, have been exponentially raised which has alarmed researchers from academia and industry. Nowadays, researchers need to attain a more effective, accurate, and trustworthy brain tumor tissue detection and classification approach. Different from traditional machine learning methods that are just targeting to enhance classification efficiency, this work highlights the process to extract several deep features to diagnose brain tumor effectively. This paper explains the modeling of a novel technique by integrating the modified ResNet50 with the Enhanced Watershed Segmentation (EWS) algorithm for brain tumor classification and deep feature extraction. The proposed model uses the ResNet50 model with a modified layer architecture including five convolutional layers and three fully connected layers. The proposed method can retain the optimal computational efficiency with high-dimensional deep features. This work obtains a comprised feature set by retrieving the diverse deep features from the ResNet50 deep learning model and feeds them as input to the classifier. The good performing capability of the proposed model is achieved by using hybrid features of ResNet50. The brain tumor tissue images were extracted by the suggested hybrid deep feature-based modified ResNet50 model and the EWS-based modified ResNet50 model with a high classification accuracy of 92% and 90%, respectively. This study is aimed at modeling biodigestion systems as a function of the most influencing parameters to generate two robust algorithms on the basis of the machine learning algorithms, including adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and least square support vector machine (LSSVM). The models are assessed utilizing multiple statistical analyses for the actual values and model outcomes. Results from the suggested models indicate their great capability of predicting biogas production from vegetable food, fruits, and wastes for a variety of ranges of input parameters. The values that are calculated for the mean relative error (MRE %) and mean squared error (MSE) were 29.318 and 0.0039 for ANFIS, and 2.951 and 0.0001 for LSSVM which shows that the latter model has a better ability to predict the target data. Finally, in order to have additional certainty, two analyses of outlier identification and sensitivity were performed on the input parameter data that proved the proposed model in this paper has higher reliability in assessing output values compared with the previous model. The spread of COVID-19 worldwide continues despite multidimensional efforts to curtail its spread and provide treatment. Efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic have triggered partial or full lockdowns across the globe. This paper presents a novel framework that intelligently combines machine learning models and the Internet of Things (IoT) technology specifically to combat COVID-19 in smart cities. The purpose of the study is to promote the interoperability of machine learning algorithms with IoT technology by interacting with a population and its environment to curtail the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the study also investigates and discusses some solution frameworks, which can generate, capture, store, and analyze data using machine learning algorithms. These algorithms can detect, prevent, and trace the spread of COVID-19 and provide a better understanding of the disease in smart cities. Similarly, the study outlined case studies on the application of machine learning to help fight against COVID-19 in hospitals worldwide. The framework proposed in the study is a comprehensive presentation on the major components needed to integrate the machine learning approach with other AI-based solutions. Finally, the machine learning framework presented in this study has the potential to help national healthcare systems in curtailing the COVID-19 pandemic in smart cities. At present, early lung cancer screening is mainly based on radiologists' experience in diagnosing benign and malignant pulmonary nodules by lung CT images. On the other hand, intraoperative rapid freezing pathology needs to analyse the invasive adenocarcinoma nodules with the worst recovery in adenocarcinoma. Moreover, rapid freezing pathology has a low diagnostic accuracy for small-diameter nodules. Because of the above problems, an algorithm for diagnosing invasive adenocarcinoma nodules in ground-glass pulmonary nodules is based on CT images. According to the nodule space information and plane features, sample data of different dimensions are designed, namely, 3D space and 2D plane feature samples. The network structure is designed based on the attention mechanism and residual learning unit; 2D and 3D neural networks are along built. By fusing the feature vectors extracted from networks of different dimensions, the diagnosis results of invasive adenocarcinoma nodules are finally obtained. The algorithm was studied on 1760 ground-glass nodules with 5-20 mm diameter collected from a city chest hospital with surgical and pathological results. There were 340 nodules with invasive adenocarcinoma and 340 with noninvasive adenocarcinoma. A total of 1420 invasive nodule samples were cross-validated on this example dataset. Microsatellites are small, repetitive sequences found all across the human genome. Microsatellite instability is the phenomenon of variations in the length of microsatellites induced by the insertion or deletion of repeat units in tumor tissue (MSI). MSI-type stomach malignancy has distinct genetic phenotypes and clinic pathological characteristics, and the stability of microsatellites influences whether or not patients with gastric mesothelioma react to immunotherapy. As a result, determining MSI status prior to surgery is critical for developing treatment options for individuals with gastric cancer. Traditional MSI detection approaches need immunological histochemistry and genetic analysis, which adds to the expense and makes it difficult to apply to every patient in clinical practice. In this study, to predict the MSI status of gastric cancer patients, researchers used image feature extraction technology and a machine learning algorithm to evaluate high-resolution histopathology pictures of patients. 279 cases of raw data were obtained from the TCGA database, 442 samples were obtained after preprocessing and upsampling, and 445 quantitative image features, including first-order statistics of impressions, texture features, and wavelet features, were extracted from the histopathological images of each sample. To filter the characteristics and provide a prediction label (risk score) for MSI status of gastric cancer, Lasso regression was utilized. Artificial intelligence technologies such as machine learning have been applied to protein engineering, with unique advantages in protein structure, function prediction, catalytic activity, and other issues in recent years. Screening better mutants is still a bottleneck in protein engineering. In this paper, a new sequence-activity relationship method was analyzed for its application in improving the thermal stability of Aspergillus terreus (R)-ω-selective amine transaminase. The experimental data from 6 single-point mutated enzymes were used as a learning dataset to build models and predict the thermostability of 26 mutants. Based on digital signal processing (DSP), this method digitized the amino acid sequence of proteins by fast Fourier transform (FFT) and then established the best model applying partial least squares regression (PLSR) to screen out all possible mutants, especially those with high performance. In protein engineering, the innovative sequence activity relationship (ISAR) method can make a reasonable prediction using limited experimental data and significantly reduce the experimental cost. The half-life ( T 1 / 2 ) of (R)-ω-transaminase was fitted with the amino acid sequence by the ISAR algorithm, resulting in an R 2 of 0.8929 and a cvRMSE of 4.89. At the same time, the mutants with higher T 1 / 2 than the existing ones were predicted, laying the groundwork for better (R)-ω-transaminase in the later stage. In this paper, the Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) is estimated through a robust machine-learning algorithm known as the Particle Swarm Optimization-based Extreme Learning Machine (PSO-ELM) model. For this purpose, a large dataset from previously published reports was gathered. Various analyses were performed to evaluate the proposed model. The results of the statistical analysis showed that this model can predict the actual values with high accuracy, so that the calculated R 2 and RMSE values were equal to 0.973 and 3.56, respectively. Sensitivity analysis was also performed on the effective input parameters. The leverage technique was also performed to check the accuracy of real data, and the results showed that the majority of data are reliable. Considering this opportunity, we present a fine-tuned random forest algorithm with the best parameters (RFWBP) that is used with the RF algorithm and feature engineering to detect diabetes patients at an early stage. We have employed several data processing techniques (e.g., normalization, conversion into numerical data) to raw data during the prepossessing phase. After that, we further applied some data mining techniques, adding related characteristics to the primary dataset. Finally, we train the proposed RFWBP and conventional methods like the AdaBoost algorithm, support vector machine, logistic regression, naive Bayes, multilayer perceptron, and a regular random forest with the dataset. Furthermore, we also utilized 5-fold cross-validation to enhance the performance of the RFWBP classifier. The proposed RFWBP achieved an accuracy of 95.83% and 90.68% with and without 5-fold cross-validation, respectively. Moreover, the proposed RFWBP is compared with conventional machine learning methods to evaluate the performance. Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal is critical to the classification of cardiac arrhythmia using some machine learning methods. In practice, the ECG datasets are usually with multiple missing values due to faults or distortion. Unfortunately, many established algorithms for classification require a fully complete matrix as input. Thus it is necessary to impute the missing data to increase the effectiveness of classification for datasets with a few missing values. In this paper, we compare the main methods for estimating the missing values in electrocardiogram data, e.g., the "Zero method", "Mean method", "PCA-based method", and "RPCA-based method" and then propose a novel KNN-based classification algorithm, i.e., a modified kernel Difference-Weighted KNN classifier (MKDF-WKNN), which is fit for the classification of imbalance datasets. The experimental results on the UCI database indicate that the "RPCA-based method" can successfully handle missing values in arrhythmia dataset no matter how many values in it are missing and our proposed classification algorithm, MKDF-WKNN, is superior to other state-of-the-art algorithms like KNN, DS-WKNN, DF-WKNN, and KDF-WKNN for uneven datasets which impacts the accuracy of classification. The neuromuscular disorders are diagnosed using electromyographic (EMG) signals. Machine learning algorithms are employed as a decision support system to diagnose neuromuscular disorders. This paper compares bagging and boosting ensemble learning methods to classify EMG signals automatically. Even though ensemble classifiers' efficacy in relation to real-life issues has been presented in numerous studies, there are almost no studies which focus on the feasibility of bagging and boosting ensemble classifiers to diagnose the neuromuscular disorders. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to assess the feasibility of bagging and boosting ensemble classifiers to diagnose neuromuscular disorders through the use of EMG signals. It should be understood that there are three steps to this method, where the step number one is to calculate the wavelet packed coefficients (WPC) for every type of EMG signal. After this, it is necessary to calculate statistical values of WPC so that the distribution of wavelet coefficients could be demonstrated. In the last step, an ensemble classifier used the extracted features as an input of the classifier to diagnose the neuromuscular disorders. Experimental results showed the ensemble classifiers achieved better performance for diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders. Background and Aim: Gastric cancer (GC) is the common leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Immune-related genes (IRGs) may potentially predict lymph node metastasis (LNM). We aimed to develop a preoperative model to predict LNM based on these IRGs. Methods: In this paper, we compared and evaluated three machine learning models to predict LNM based on publicly available gene expression data from TCGA-STAD. The Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) method was utilized to feature selection according to its relationships with LN status. The performance of the model was assessed using the area under the curve (AUC) and F1 score. Results: The Naive Bayesian model showed better performance and was constructed based on 26 selected gene features, with AUCs of 0.741 in the training set and 0.688 in the test set. The F1 score in the training set and test set was 0.652 and 0.597, respectively. Furthermore, Naive Bayesian model based on 26 IRGs is the first diagnostic tool for the identification of LNM in advanced GC. Long-term cigarette smoking causes various human diseases, including respiratory disease, cancer, and gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. Alterations in gene expression and variable splicing processes induced by smoking are associated with the development of diseases. This study applied advanced machine learning methods to identify the isoforms with important roles in distinguishing smokers from former smokers based on the expression profile of isoforms from current and former smokers collected in one previous study. These isoforms were deemed as features, which were first analyzed by the Boruta to select features highly correlated with the target variables. Then, the selected features were evaluated by four feature ranking algorithms, resulting in four feature lists. The incremental feature selection method was applied to each list for obtaining the optimal feature subsets and building high-performance classification models. Furthermore, a series of classification rules were accessed by decision tree with the highest performance. Eventually, the rationality of the mined isoforms (features) and classification rules was verified by reviewing previous research. Sarcoma, the second common type of solid tumor in children and adolescents, has a wide variety of subtypes that are often not properly diagnosed at an early stage, leading to late metastases and causing serious loss of life and property to patients and families. It exhibits a high degree of heterogeneity at the cellular, molecular, and epigenetic levels, where DNA methylation has been proposed to play a role in the diagnosis of sarcoma subtypes. Thus, this study is aimed at finding potential biomarkers at the DNA methylation level to distinguish different sarcoma subtypes. A machine learning process was designed to analyse sarcoma samples, each of which was represented by lots of methylation sites. Irrelevant sites were removed using the Boruta method, and remaining sites related to the target variables were kept for further analyses. Afterward, three feature ranking methods (LASSO, LightGBM, and MCFS) were adopted to rank these features, and six classification models were constructed by combining incremental feature selection and two classification algorithms (decision tree and random forest). Among these models, the performance of RF model was higher than that of DT model under all three ranking conditions. The specific expression of genes obtained from the annotation of highly correlated methylation site features, such as PRKAR1B, INPP5A, and GLI3, was proven to be associated with sarcoma by publications. Moreover, the quantitative rules obtained by decision tree algorithm helped us to understand the essential differences between various sarcoma types and classify sarcoma subtypes, providing a new means of clinical identification and determining new therapeutic targets. Feature selection is the process of decreasing the number of features in a dataset by removing redundant, irrelevant, and randomly class-corrected data features. By applying feature selection on large and highly dimensional datasets, the redundant features are removed, reducing the complexity of the data and reducing training time. The objective of this paper was to design an optimizer that combines the well-known metaheuristic population-based optimizer, the grey wolf algorithm, and the gradient descent algorithm and test it for applications in feature selection problems. The proposed algorithm was first compared against the original grey wolf algorithm in 23 continuous test functions. The proposed optimizer was altered for feature selection, and 3 binary implementations were developed with final implementation compared against the two implementations of the binary grey wolf optimizer and binary grey wolf particle swarm optimizer on 6 medical datasets from the UCI machine learning repository, on metrics such as accuracy, size of feature subsets, F -measure, accuracy, precision, and sensitivity. The proposed optimizer outperformed the three other optimizers in 3 of the 6 datasets in average metrics. Background. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is recognized as a chronic inflammatory disease featured by pathological synovial inflammation. Currently, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of RA remain unclear. In the study, we attempted to explore the underlying mechanisms of RA and provide potential targets for the therapy of RA via bioinformatics analysis. Methods. We downloaded four microarray datasets (GSE77298, GSE55235, GSE12021, and GSE55457) from the GEO database. Firstly, GSE77298 and GSE55457 were identified DEGs by the "limma" and "sva" packages of R software. Then, we performed GO, KEGG, and GSEA enrichment analyses to further analyze the function of DEGs. Hub genes were screened using LASSO analysis and SVM-RFE analysis. To further explore the differences of the expression of hub genes in healthy control and RA patient synovial tissues, we calculated the ROC curves and AUC. The expression levels of hub genes were verified in synovial tissues of normal and RA rats by qRT-PCR and western blot. Furthermore, the CIBERSORTx was implemented to assess the differences of infiltration in 22 immune cells between normal and RA synovial tissues. We explored the association between hub genes and infiltrating immune cells. Results. CRTAM, CXCL13, and LRRC15 were identified as RA's potential hub genes by machine learning and LASSO algorithms. In addition, we verified the expression levels of three hub genes in the synovial tissue of normal and RA rats by PCR and western blot. Moreover, immune cell infiltration analysis showed that plasma cells, T follicular helper cells, M0 macrophages, M1 macrophages, and gamma delta T cells may be engaged in the development and progression of RA. Subcellular localization attempts to assign proteins to one of the cell compartments that performs specific biological functions. Finding the link between proteins, biological functions, and subcellular localization is an effective way to investigate the general organization of living cells in a systematic manner. However, determining the subcellular localization of proteins by traditional experimental approaches is difficult. Here, protein–protein interaction networks, functional enrichment on gene ontology and pathway, and a set of proteins having confirmed subcellular localization were applied to build prediction models for human protein subcellular localizations. To build an effective predictive model, we employed a variety of robust machine learning algorithms, including Boruta feature selection, minimum redundancy maximum relevance, Monte Carlo feature selection, and LightGBM. Then, the incremental feature selection method with random forest and support vector machine was used to discover the essential features. Furthermore, 38 key features were determined by integrating results of different feature selection methods, which may provide critical insights into the subcellular location of proteins. Computational drug repositioning, designed to identify new indications for existing drugs, significantly reduced the cost and time involved in drug development. Prediction of drug-disease associations is promising for drug repositioning. Recent years have witnessed an increasing number of machine learning-based methods for calculating drug repositioning. In this paper, a novel feature learning method based on Gaussian interaction profile kernel and autoencoder (GIPAE) is proposed for drug-disease association. In order to further reduce the computation cost, both batch normalization layer and the full-connected layer are introduced to reduce training complexity. The experimental results of 10-fold cross validation indicate that the proposed method achieves superior performance on Fdataset and Cdataset with the AUCs of 93.30% and 96.03%, respectively, which were higher than many previous computational models. To further assess the accuracy of GIPAE, we conducted case studies on two complex human diseases. The top 20 drugs predicted, 14 obesity-related drugs, and 11 drugs related to Alzheimer's disease were validated in the CTD database. Steady-state somatosensory-evoked potential- (SSSEP-) based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have been applied for assisting people with physical disabilities since it does not require gaze fixation or long-time training. Despite the advancement of various noninvasive electroencephalogram- (EEG-) based BCI paradigms, researches on SSSEP with the various frequency range and related classification algorithms are relatively unsettled. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of classifying the SSSEP within high-frequency vibration stimuli induced by a versatile coin-type eccentric rotating mass (ERM) motor. Seven healthy subjects performed selective attention (SA) tasks with vibration stimuli attached to the left and right index fingers. Three EEG feature extraction methods, followed by a support vector machine (SVM) classifier, have been tested: common spatial pattern (CSP), filter-bank CSP (FBCSP), and mutual information-based best individual feature (MIBIF) selection after the FBCSP. Consequently, the FBCSP showed the highest performance at 71.5 ± 2.5 % for classifying the left and right-hand SA tasks than the other two methods (i.e., CSP and FBCSP-MIBIF). Based on our findings and approach, the high-frequency vibration stimuli using low-cost coin motors with the FBCSP-based feature selection can be potentially applied to developing practical SSSEP-based BCI systems. COVID-19 is hypothesized to be linked to the host's excessive inflammatory immunological response to SARS-CoV-2 infection, which is regarded to be a major factor in disease severity and mortality. Numerous immune cells play a key role in immune response regulation, and gene expression analysis in these cells could be a useful method for studying disease states, assessing immunological responses, and detecting biomarkers. Here, we developed a machine learning procedure to find biomarkers that discriminate disease severity in individual immune cells (B cell, CD4+ cell, CD8+ cell, monocyte, and NK cell) using single-cell gene expression profiles of COVID-19. The gene features of each profile were first filtered and ranked using the Boruta feature selection method and mRMR, and the resulting ranked feature lists were then fed into the incremental feature selection method to determine the optimal number of features with decision tree and random forest algorithms. Meanwhile, we extracted the classification rules in each cell type from the optimal decision tree classifiers. The best gene sets discovered in this study were analyzed by GO and KEGG pathway enrichment, and some important biomarkers like TLR2, ITK, CX3CR1, IL1B, and PRDM1 were validated by recent literature. The findings reveal that the optimal gene sets for each cell type can accurately classify COVID-19 disease severity and provide insight into the molecular mechanisms involved in disease progression. Brain cancer is one of the cell synthesis diseases. Brain cancer cells are analyzed for patient diagnosis. Due to this composite cell, the conceptual classifications differ from each and every brain cancer investigation. In the gene test, patient prognosis is identified based on individual biocell appearance. Classification of advanced artificial neural network subtypes attains improved performance compared to previous enhanced artificial neural network (EANN) biocell subtype investigation. In this research, the proposed features are selected based on improved gene expression programming (IGEP) with modified brute force algorithm. Then, the maximum and minimum term survivals are classified by using PCA with enhanced artificial neural network (EANN). In this, the improved gene expression programming (IGEP) effectual features are selected by using remainder performance to improve the prognosis efficiency. This system is estimated by using the Cancer Genome Atlas (CGA) dataset. Simulation outputs present improved gene expression programming (IGEP) with modified brute force algorithm which achieves accurate efficiency of 96.37%, specificity of 96.37%, sensitivity of 98.37%, precision of 78.78%, F -measure of 80.22%, and recall of 64.29% when compared to generalized regression neural network (GRNN), improved extreme learning machine (IELM) with minimum redundancy maximum relevance (MRMR) method, and support vector machine (SVM). Breast cancer, if diagnosed and treated early, has a better chance of surviving. Many studies have shown that a larger number of ultrasound images are generated every day, and the number of radiologists able to analyze this medical data is very limited. This often results in misclassification of breast lesions, resulting in a high false-positive rate. In this article, we propose a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system that can automatically generate an optimized algorithm. To train machine learning, we employ 13 features out of 185 available. Five machine learning classifiers were used to classify malignant versus benign tumors. The experimental results revealed Bayesian optimization with a tree-structured Parzen estimator based on a machine learning classifier for 10-fold cross-validation. The LightGBM classifier performs better than the other four classifiers, achieving 99.86% accuracy, 100.0% precision, 99.60% recall, and 99.80% for the FI score. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

After primary treatment of localized prostate carcinoma (PC), up to a third of patients have disease recurrence. Different predictive models have already been used either for initial stratification of PC patients or to predict disease recurrence. Recently, artificial intelligence has been introduced in the diagnosis and management of PC with a potential to revolutionize this field. The aim of this study was to analyze machine learning (ML) classifiers in order to predict disease progression in the moment of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) elevation during follow-up. The study cohort consisted of 109 PC patients treated with external beam radiotherapy alone or in combination with androgen deprivation therapy. We developed and evaluated the performance of two ML algorithms based on artificial neural networks (ANN) and naïve Bayes (NB). Of all patients, 72.5% was randomly selected for a training set while the remaining patients were used for testing of the models. The presence/absence of disease progression was defined as the output variable. The input variables for models were conducted from the univariate analysis preformed among two groups of patients in the training set. They included two pretreatment variables (UICC stage and Gleason's score risk group) and five posttreatment variables (nadir PSA, time to nadir PSA, PSA doubling time, PSA velocity, and PSA in the moment of disease reevaluation). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and predictive accuracy was calculated to test the models' performance. The results showed that specificity was similar for both models, while NB achieved better sensitivity then ANN (100.0% versus 94.4%). The ANN showed an accuracy of 93.3%, and the matching for NB model was 96.7%. Methylation is one of the most common and considerable modifications in biological systems mediated by multiple enzymes. Recent studies have shown that methylation has been widely identified in different RNA molecules. RNA methylation modifications have various kinds, such as 5-methylcytosine (m5C). However, for individual methylation sites, their functions still remain to be elucidated. Testing of all methylation sites relies heavily on high-throughput sequencing technology, which is expensive and labor consuming. Thus, computational prediction approaches could serve as a substitute. In this study, multiple machine learning models were used to predict possible RNA m5C sites on the basis of mRNA sequences in human and mouse. Each site was represented by several features derived from k -mers of an RNA subsequence containing such site as center. The powerful max-relevance and min-redundancy (mRMR) feature selection method was employed to analyse these features. The outcome feature list was fed into incremental feature selection method, incorporating four classification algorithms, to build efficient models.
