Abstract: In his 1985 paper, Sullivan sketched a proof of his structural stability theorem for differentiable group actions satisfying certain expansion-hyperbolicity axioms. In this paper, we relax Sullivan’s axioms and introduce a notion of meandering hyperbolicity for group actions on geodesic metric spaces. This generalization is substantial enough to encompass actions of certain nonhyperbolic groups, such as actions of uniform lattices in semisimple Lie groups on flag manifolds. At the same time, our notion is sufficiently robust, and we prove that meandering-hyperbolic actions are still structurally stable. We also prove some basic results on meandering-hyperbolic actions and give other examples of such actions.

In this paper, we introduce the notion of an Evertse–Ferretti Nevanlinna constant and compare it with the birational Nevanlinna constant introduced by the authors in a recent joint paper. We then use it to recover several previously known results. This includes a 1999 example of Faltings from his Baker’s Garden article. We also extend the theory of these Nevanlinna constants to what we call “multidivisor Nevanlinna constants,” which allow the proximity function to involve the maximum of Weil functions for finitely many divisors.

This article represents the fourth and final part of a four-paper sequence whose aim is to prove the Threshold Conjecture as well as the more general Dichotomy Theorem for the energy critical 4 + 1-dimensional hyperbolic Yang{Mills equation. The Threshold Theorem asserts that topologically trivial solutions with energy below twice the ground state energy are global and scatter. The Dichotomy Theorem applies to solutions in arbitrary topological class with large energy, and provides two exclusive alternatives: Either the solution is global and scatters, or it bubbles off a soliton in either finite time or infinite time. Using the caloric gauge developed in the first paper, the continuation/ scattering criteria established in the second paper, and the large data analysis in an arbitrary topological class at optimal regularity in the third paper, here we perform a blow-up analysis that shows that the failure of global well-posedness and scattering implies either the existence of a soliton with at most the same energy bubbling off, or the existence of a non-trivial self-similar solution. The proof is completed by showing that the latter solutions do not exist.

Abstract: Knot filtered embedded contact homology was first introduced by Hutchings in 2015; it has been computed for the standard transverse unknot in irrational ellipsoids by Hutchings and for the Hopf link in lens spaces via a quotient by Weiler. While toric constructions can be used to understand the ECH chain complexes of many contact forms adapted to open books with binding the unknot and Hopf link, they do not readily adapt to general torus knots and links. In this paper, we generalize the definition and invariance of knot filtered embedded contact homology to allow for degenerate knots with rational rotation numbers. We then develop new methods for understanding the embedded contact homology chain complex of positive torus knotted fibrations of the standard tight contact 3‐sphere in terms of their presentation as open books and as Seifert fiber spaces. We provide Morse–Bott methods, using a doubly filtered complex and the energy filtered perturbed Seiberg–Witten Floer theory developed by Hutchings and Taubes, and use them to compute the knot filtered embedded contact homology, for odd and positive.

This paper is the first of a series of papers culminating in the result that measure preserving diffeomorphisms of the disc or 2-torus are unclassifiable. It addresses another classical problem: which abstract measure preserving systems are realizable as smooth diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold? The main result gives symbolic representations of Anosov–Katok diffeomorphisms.

The theory of biset functors, introduced by Serge Bouc, gives a unifiedtreatment of operations in representation theory that are induced bypermutation bimodules. In this paper, by considering fibered bisets, weintroduce and describe the basic theory of fibered biset functors which is anatural framework for operations induced by monomial bimodules. The main resultof this paper is the classification of simple fibered biset functors.

In this paper, we explore affine semigroup versions of the convex geometry theorems of Helly, Tverberg, and Carathéodory. Additionally, we develop a new theory of colored affine semigroups, where the semigroup generators each receive a color and the elements of the semigroup take into account the colors used (the classical theory of affine semigroups coincides with the case in which all generators have the same color). We prove an analog of Tverberg’s theorem and colorful Helly’s theorem for semigroups, as well as a version of colorful Carathéodory’s theorem for cones. We also demonstrate that colored numerical semigroups are particularly rich by introducing a colored version of the Frobenius number.

In many real life situations one has m types of random events happening in chronological order within a time interval and one wishes to predict various milestones about these events or their subsets. An example is birdwatching. Suppose we can observe up to m different types of birds during a season. At any moment a bird of type i is observed with some probability. There are many natural questions a birdwatcher may have: how many observations should one expect to perform before recording all types of birds? Is there a time interval where the researcher is most likely to observe all species? Or, what is the likelihood that several species of birds will be observed at overlapping time intervals? Our paper answers these questions using a new model based on random interval graphs. This model is a natural follow up to the famous coupon collector’s problem.

In this paper we obtain first a gap theorem for a class of conformally compact Einstein manifolds with a renormalized volume that is close to its maximum value. We also use a blow-up method to derive curvature estimates for conformally compact Einstein manifolds with large renormalized volume. The major part of this paper is the study of how a property of the conformal infinity influences the geometry of the interior of a conformally compact Einstein manifold. Specifically we are interested in conformally compact Einstein manifolds with conformal infinity whose Yamabe invariant is close to that of the round sphere. This leads not only to the complete proof of the rigidity theorem for conformally compact Einstein manifolds in arbitrary dimension without spin assumption but also a new curvature pinching estimate for conformally compact Einstein manifolds with conformal infinities having large Yamabe invariant. We also derive curvature estimates for such manifolds.

In this paper we analyze the long-Time behavior of 3-dimensional Ricci flow with surgery. We prove that under the topological condition that the initial manifold only has non-Aspherical or hyperbolic components in its geometric decomposition, there are only finitely many surgeries and the curvature is bounded by Ct-1 for large t . This proves a conjecture of Perelman for this class of initial topologies. The proof of this fact illustrates the fundamental ideas that are used in the subsequent papers of the author.

In this paper we develop the basic tools for a classification of Killing vector fields of constant length on pseudo-Riemannian homogeneous spaces. This extends a recent paper of M. Xu and J. A. Wolf, which classified the pairs (M,ξ) where M = G/H is a Riemannian normal homogeneous space, G is a compact simple Lie group, and ξ ϵ g defines a nonzero Killing vector field of constant length on M. The method there was direct computation. Here we make use of the moment map M → g and the flag manifold structure of Ad (G)ξ to give a shorter, more geometric proof which does not require compactness and which is valid in the pseudo-Riemannian setting. In that context we break the classification problem into three parts. The first is easily settled. The second concerns the cases where ξ is elliptic and G is simple (but not necessarily compact); that case is our main result here. The third, which remains open, is a more combinatorial problem involving elements of the first two.

In this paper we give an explicit description of the bounded displacement isometries of a class of spaces that includes the Riemannian nilmanifolds. The class of spaces consists of metric spaces (and thus includes Finsler manifolds) on which an exponential solvable Lie group acts transitively by isometries. The bounded isometries are proved to be of constant displacement. Their characterization gives further evidence for the author’s 1962 conjecture on homogeneous Riemannian quotient manifolds. That conjecture suggests that if Γ \ M is a Riemannian quotient of a connected simply connected homogeneous Riemannian manifold M, then Γ \ M is homogeneous if and only if each isometry γ∈ Γ is of constant displacement. The description of bounded isometries in this paper gives an alternative proof of an old result of J. Tits on bounded automorphisms of semisimple Lie groups. The topic of constant displacement isometries has an interesting history, starting with Clifford’s use of quaternions in non-Euclidean geometry, and we sketch that in a historical note.

In this paper we give explicit characterizations, based on the cutting and spacer parameters, of (a) which rank-one transformations factor onto a given finite cyclic permutation, (b) which rank-one transformations factor onto a given odometer, and (c) which rank-one transformations are isomorphic to a given odometer. These naturally yield characterizations of (d) which rank-one transformations factor onto some (unspecified) finite cyclic permutation, (d′) which rank-one transformations are totally ergodic, (e) which rank-one transformations factor onto some (unspecified) odometer, and (f) which rank-one transformations are isomorphic to some (unspecified) odometer.

In this paper, we consider a nonlinear interaction system between the barotropic mode and the first baroclinic mode of the tropical atmosphere with moisture, which was derived in Frierson et al (2004 Commum. Math. Sci. 2 591-626). We establish the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to this system, with initial data in H1, for each fixed convective adjustment relaxation time parameter ϵ > 1. Moreover, if the initial data possess slightly more regularity than H 1, then the unique strong solution depends continuously on the initial data. Furthermore, by establishing several appropriate ϵ-independent estimates, we prove that the system converges to a limiting system as the relaxation time parameter ϵ tends to zero, with a convergence rate of the order O(√ϵ). Moreover, the limiting system has a unique global strong solution for any initial data in H1 and such a unique strong solution depends continuously on the initial data if the initial data posses slightly more regularity than H1. Notably, this solves the viscous version of an open problem proposed in the above mentioned paper of Frierson, Majda and Pauluis.

This article constitutes the final and main part of a three-paper sequence (Ann PDE, 2016. doi:10.1007/s40818-016-0006-4; Oh and Tataru, 2015. arXiv:1503.01561), whose goal is to prove global well-posedness and scattering of the energy critical Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equation (MKG) on R1 + 4 for arbitrary finite energy initial data. Using the successively stronger continuation/scattering criteria established in the previous two papers (Ann PDE, 2016. doi:10.1007/s40818-016-0006-4; Oh and Tataru, 2015. arXiv:1503.01561), we carry out a blow-up analysis and deduce that the failure of global well-posedness and scattering implies the existence of a nontrivial stationary or self-similar solution to MKG. Then, by establishing that such solutions do not exist, we complete the proof.

In the process of finding Einstein metrics in dimension [Formula: see text], we can search metrics critical for the scalar curvature among fixed-volume metrics of constant scalar curvature on a closed oriented manifold. This leads to a system of PDEs (which we call the Fischer–Marsden Equation, after a conjecture concerning this system) for scalar functions, involving the linearization of the scalar curvature. The Fischer–Marsden conjecture said that, if the equation admits a solution, the underlying Riemannian manifold is Einstein. Counter-examples are known by Kobayashi and Lafontaine, and by our first paper. Multiple solutions to this system yield Killing vector fields. We showed in our first paper that the dimension of the solution space [Formula: see text] can be at most [Formula: see text], with equality implying that [Formula: see text] is a sphere with constant sectional curvatures. Moreover, we also showed there that the identity component of the isometry group has a factor [Formula: see text]. In this second paper, we apply our results in the first paper to show that either [Formula: see text] is a standard sphere or the dimension of the space of Fischer–Marsden solutions can be at most [Formula: see text].

In this paper we extend the local scalar curvature rigidity result in [6] toa small domain on general vacuum static spaces, which confirms the interestingdichotomy of local surjectivity and local rigidity about the scalar curvaturein general in the light of the paper [10]. We obtain the local scalar curvaturerigidity of bounded domains in hyperbolic spaces. We also obtain the globalscalar curvature rigidity for conformal deformations of metrics in the domains,where the lapse functions are positive, on vacuum static spaces with positivescalar curvature, and show such domains are maximal, which generalizes the workin [15].

Abstract: Frege’sGrundgesetzewas one of the 19th century forerunners to contemporary set theory which was plagued by the Russell paradox. In recent years, it has been shown that subsystems of theGrundgesetzeformed by restricting the comprehension schema are consistent. One aim of this paper is to ascertain how much set theory can be developed within these consistent fragments of theGrundgesetze, and our main theorem (Theorem 2.9) shows that there is a model of a fragment of theGrundgesetzewhich defines a model of all the axioms of Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory with the exception of the power set axiom. The proof of this result appeals to Gödel’s constructible universe of sets and to Kripke and Platek’s idea of the projectum, as well as to a weak version of uniformization (which does not involve knowledge of Jensen’s fine structure theory). The axioms of theGrundgesetzeare examples ofabstraction principles, and the other primary aim of this paper is to articulate a sufficient condition for the consistency of abstraction principles with limited amounts of comprehension (Theorem 3.5). As an application, we resolve an analogue of the joint consistency problem in the predicative setting.

In this paper we introduce and analyze an algorithm for continuous data assimilation for a three-dimensional Brinkman-Forchheimer-extended Darcy (3D BFeD) model of porous media. This model is believed to be accurate when the flow velocity is too large for Darcy's law to be valid, and additionally the porosity is not too small. The algorithm is inspired by ideas developed for designing finite-parameters feedback control for dissipative systems. It aims to obtain improved estimates of the state of the physical system by incorporating deterministic or noisy measurements and observations. Specifically, the algorithm involves a feedback control that nudges the large scales of the approximate solution toward those of the reference solution associated with the spatial measurements. In the first part of the paper, we present a few results of existence and uniqueness of weak and strong solutions of the 3D BFeD system. The second part is devoted to the convergence analysis of the data assimilation algorithm.

The arrow polynomial is an invariant of framed oriented virtual links that generalizes the virtual Kauffman bracket. In this paper, we define the homological arrow polynomial, which generalizes the arrow polynomial to framed oriented virtual links with labeled components. The key observation is that, given a link in a thickened surface, the homology class of the link defines a functional on the surface’s skein module, and by applying it to the image of the link in the skein module this gives a virtual link invariant. We give a graphical calculus for the homological arrow polynomial by taking the usual diagrams for the Kauffman bracket and including labeled “whiskers” that record intersection numbers with each labeled component of the link. We use the homological arrow polynomial to study [Formula: see text]-nullhomologous virtual links and checkerboard colorability, giving a new way to complete Imabeppu’s characterization of checkerboard colorability of virtual links with up to four crossings. We also prove a version of the Kauffman–Murasugi–Thistlethwaite theorem that the breadth of an evaluation of the homological arrow polynomial for an “h-reduced” diagram [Formula: see text] is [Formula: see text].

We describe a new approach to relative p-adic Hodge theory based on systematic use of Witt vector constructions and nonarchimedean analytic geometry in the style of Berkovich. In this paper, we give a thorough development of ?-modules over a relative Robba ring associated to a perfect Banach ring of characteristic p, including the relationship between these objects and étale Zp-local systems and Qp-local systems on the algebraic and analytic spaces associated to the base ring, and the relationship between étale cohomology and φ-cohomology. We also make a critical link to mixed characteristic by exhibiting an equivalence of tensor categories between the finite étale algebras over an arbitrary perfect Banach algebra over a nontrivially normed complete field of characteristic p and the finite étale algebras over a corresponding Banach Qp-algebra. This recovers the homeomorphism between the absolute Galois groups of Fp((π)) and Qp(μp∞)given by the field of norms construction of Fontaine and Wintenberger, as well as generalizations considered by Andreatta, Brinon, Faltings, Gabber, Ramero, Scholl, and most recently Scholze. Applications to the description of étale local systems on nonarchimedean analytic spaces over p-adic fields will be described in subsequent papers.

This paper is about certain linear subspaces of Banach SN spaces (that is to say Banach spaces which have a symmetric nonexpansive linear map into their dual spaces). We apply our results to monotone linear subspaces of the product of a Banach space and its dual. In this paper, we establish several new results and also give improved proofs of some known ones in both the general and the special contexts. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

This paper presents new constructions of models of Hume's Principle and BasicLaw V with restricted amounts of comprehension. The techniques used in theseconstructions are drawn from hyperarithmetic theory and the model theory offields, and formalizing these techniques within various subsystems ofsecond-order Peano arithmetic allows one to put upper and lower bounds on theinterpretability strength of these theories and hence to compare these theoriesto the canonical subsystems of second-order arithmetic. The main results ofthis paper are: (i) there is a consistent extension of the hyperarithmeticfragment of Basic Law V which interprets the hyperarithmetic fragment ofsecond-order Peano arithmetic, and (ii) the hyperarithmetic fragment of Hume'sPrinciple does not interpret the hyperarithmetic fragment of second-order Peanoarithmetic, so that in this specific sense there is no predicative version ofFrege's Theorem.

In this paper we discuss symmetrically self-dual spaces, which are simply real vector spaces with a symmetric bilinear form. Certain subsets of the space will be called q-positive, where q is the quadratic form induced by the original bilinear form. The notion of q-positivity generalizes the classical notion of the monotonicity of a subset of a product of a Banach space and its dual. Maximal q-positivity then generalizes maximal monotonicity. We discuss concepts generalizing the representations of monotone sets by convex functions, as well as the number of maximally q -positive extensions of a q-positive set. We also discuss symmetrically self-dual Banach spaces, in which we add a Banach space structure, giving new characterizations of maximal q-positivity. AbstractWe prove rigidity results for compact Riemannian manifolds in the spirit of Tachibana. For example, we observe that manifolds with divergence-free Weyl tensors and "Equation missing"-nonnegative curvature operators are locally symmetric or conformally equivalent to a quotient of the sphere. The main focus of the paper is to prove similar results for manifolds with special holonomy. In particular, we consider Kähler manifolds with divergence-free Bochner tensors. For quaternion Kähler manifolds, we obtain a partial result towards the LeBrun–Salamon conjecture.

In this paper, we provide a simple proof of the Holonomy theorem using a new Lyndon-Chiswell length function on the Karnofsky-Rhodes expansion of a semigroup. Unexpectedly, we have both a left and a right action on the Chiswell tree by elliptic maps.

Let $p$ be a prime, and let $n>0$ and $r$ be integers. In this paper we studyFleck's quotient $$F_p(n,r)=(-p)^{-\lfloor(n-1)/(p-1)\rfloor} \sum_{k=r(modp)}\binom {n}{k}(-1)^k\in Z.$$ We determine $F_p(n,r)$ mod $p$ completely by certain number-theoretic andcombinatorial methods; consequently, if $2\le n\le p$ then$$\sum_{k=1}^n(-1)^{pk-1}\binom{pn-1}{pk-1} \equiv(n-1)!B_{p-n}p^n (modp^{n+1}),$$ where $B_0,B_1,...$ are Bernoulli numbers. We also establish theKummer-type congruence $F_p(n+p^a(p-1),r)\equiv F_p(n,r) (mod p^a)$ for$a=1,2,3,...$, and reveal some connections between Fleck's quotients and classnumbers of the quadratic fields $\Q(\sqrt{\pm p})$ and the $p$-th cyclotomicfield $\Q(\zeta_p)$. In addition, generalized Fleck quotients are also studiedin this paper.

In 1932 von Neumann proposed classifying the statistical behavior of differentiable systems. In modern language this is interpreted as classifying diffeomorphisms of compact manifolds up to measure isomorphism. This paper proves that this is impossible in a rigorous sense.

In this paper we study associative algebras with a Poisson algebra structureon the center acting by derivations on the rest of the algebra. Thesestructures, which we call Poisson fibred algebras, appear in the study ofquantum groups at roots of 1 and related algebras, as well as in therepresentation theory of affine Lie algebras at the critical level. Poissonfibred algebras lead to a generalization of Poisson geometry, which we developin the paper. We also take up the general study of noncommutative spaces whichare close to enough commutative ones so that they contain enough points to haveinteresting commutative geometry. One of the most striking uses of ournoncommutative spaces is the quantum Borel-Weil-Bott Theorem for quantum sl_q(2) at a root of unity, which comes as a calculation of the cohomology ofactual sheaves on actual topological spaces.

A detailed proof of the incorrectness of the foundations of the differential calculus is proposed. The correct methodological basis for the proof is the unity of formal logic and rational dialectics. The proof leads to the following irrefutable statement: differential calculus represents a gross error in mathematics and physics. The proof of this statement is based on the following irrefutable results: (1) the standard theory of infinitesimals and the theory of limits underlying the differential calculus are gross errors. The main error is that infinitesimal (infinitely decreasing) quantities do not take on numerical values in the process of tending to zero. The number "zero" is not a permissible value of infinitesimal quantity. The concepts of "infinitesimal quantity", "movement", "process of tendency", and "limit of tendency" are meaningless concepts in mathematics: they are not mathematical concepts because the mathematical formalism does not contain movement (process); (2) the concepts of "increment of argument" and "increment of function" are the starting point of the differential calculus. The gross error is that the increment of argument is not defined. An indefinite (undefined, uncertain, ambiguous, undetermined) increment of an argument is a meaningless quantity (concept); (3) the definition of the derivative of a function is a gross error. The derivative is the limit of the ratio of the function increment to the argument increment under the following conditions: (a) the argument increment is not equal to zero; (b) the increment of the argument tends to zero and reaches the value "zero". In this case, the following logical contradiction arises: the increment of the argument is both not equal to zero and equal to zero; (4) the differentials of the argument and the function - as infinitesimal quantities - do not take on numerical values. This means that the differentials of quantities have neither quantitative nor qualitative determinacy. In this case, the differentials of quantities are meaningless symbols. The geometric and physical interpretations of the derivative are a gross error; (5) the definition of the total differential of a function of two (many) variables is a gross error because the definition contains a formal-logical contradiction, i.e. the definition as the sum of partial differentials does not satisfy the formal-logical law of the lack (absence) of contradiction; (6) the theory of proportions completely refutes the theory of differential calculus. Thus, differential calculus does not satisfy the criterion of truth and is not correct scientific (mathematical) theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Large scale dynamics of the oceans and the atmosphere are governed by the primitive equations (PEs). It is well-known that the three-dimensional viscous PEs is globally well-posed in Sobolev spaces. On the other hand, the inviscid PEs without rotation is known to be ill-posed in Sobolev spaces, and its smooth solutions can form singularity in finite time. In this paper, we extend the above results in the presence of rotation. We construct finite-time blowup solutions to the inviscid PEs with rotation, and establish that the inviscid PEs with rotation is ill-posed in Sobolev spaces in the sense that its perturbation around a certain steady state background flow is both linearly and nonlinearly ill-posed in Sobolev spaces. Its linear instability is of the Kelvin-Helmholtz type similar to the one appears in the context of vortex sheets problem. This implies that the inviscid PEs is also linearly ill-posed in Gevrey class of order s>1, and suggests that a suitable space for the well-posedness is Gevrey class of order s=1, which is exactly the space of analytic functions.

We construct finite-time blowup solutions to the inviscid PEs with rotation, and establish that the inviscid PEs with rotation is ill-posed in Sobolev spaces in the sense that its perturbation around a certain steady state background flow is both linearly and nonlinearly ill-posed in Sobolev spaces. Its linear instability is of the Kelvin-Helmholtz type similar to the one appears in the context of vortex sheets problem. This implies that the inviscid PEs is also linearly ill-posed in Gevrey class of order s>1, and suggests that a suitable space for the well-posedness is Gevrey class of order s=1, which is exactly the space of analytic functions.

For a dispersive partial differential equation, the degeneracy of its dispersion relation will deteriorate dispersion of waves and strengthen nonlinear effects. Such negative effects can sometimes be mitigated by some null structure in the nonlinearity.Motivated by water-wave problems, in this paper we consider a class of nonlinear dispersive PDEs in 2D with cubic nonlinearities, whose dispersion relations are radial and have vanishing Gaussian curvature on a circle. For such a model we identify certain null structures for the cubic nonlinearity, which suffice in order to guarantee global scattering solutions for the small data problem. Our null structures in the power-type nonlinearity are weak and only eliminate the worst nonlinear interaction. Such null structures arise naturally in some water-wave problems.

Geometrically infinite Kleinian groups have non-conical limit sets with the cardinality of the continuum. In this paper, we construct a geometrically infinite Fuchsian group such that the Hausdorff dimension of the non-conical limit set equals zero. For finitely generated, geometrically infinite Kleinian groups, we prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the non-conical limit set is positive.

In this paper we prove the local well-posedness and global well-posedness with small initial data of the strong solution to the reduced 3D primitive geostrophic adjustment model with weak dissipation. The term reduced model means that the relevant physical quantities depend only on two spatial variables. The weak dissipation helps us overcome the ill-posedness of the original model. We also prove the global well-posedness of the strong solution to the Voigt α-regularization of this model, and establish the convergence of the strong solution of the Voigt α-regularized model to the corresponding solution of the original model. Furthermore, we derive a criterion for existence of finite-time blow-up of the original model with weak dissipation based on Voigt α-regularization.

In this work we study the global solvability of the primitive equations for the atmosphere coupled to moisture dynamics with phase changes for warm clouds, where water is present in the form of water vapor and in the liquid state as cloud water and rain water. This moisture model contains closures for the phase changes condensation and evaporation, as well as the processes of auto conversion of cloud water into rainwater and the collection of cloud water by the falling rain droplets. It has been used by Klein and Majda in [17] and corresponds to a basic form of the bulk microphysics closure in the spirit of Kessler [16] and Grabowski and Smolarkiewicz [12]. The moisture balances are strongly coupled to the thermodynamic equation via the latent heat associated to the phase changes. In [14] we assumed the velocity field to be given and proved rigorously the global existence and uniqueness of uniformly bounded solutions of the moisture balances coupled to the thermodynamic equation. In this paper we present the solvability of a full moist atmospheric flow model, where the moisture model is coupled to the primitive equations of atmospherical dynamics governing the velocity field. For the derivation of a priori estimates for the velocity field we thereby use the ideas of Cao and Titi [6], who succeeded in proving the global solvability of the primitive equations.

Let K0(Vk) be the Grothendieck group of k-varieties. Campbell and Zakharevich have constructed a higher algebraic K-theory spectrum K(Vk) such that π0K(Vk)=K0(Vk). In this paper we construct non-trivial classes in the higher homotopy groups of K(Vk) when k is finite or a subfield of C. To do this we give a recipe for lifting motivic measures K0(Vk)→K0(E) to maps of spectra K(Vk)→K(E). We consider two special cases: the classical local zeta function, thought of as a homomorphism K0(VFq)→K0(End(Qℓ)), and the compactly-supported Euler characteristic, thought of as a homomorphism K0(VC)→K0(Q). We use lifts of these motivic measures to prove that the Grothendieck spectrum of varieties contains nontrivial geometric information in its higher homotopy groups by showing that the map S→K(Vk) is nontrivial in higher dimensions when k is finite or a subfield of C, and, moreover, that when k is finite this map is not surjective on higher homotopy groups.

In this paper, we present two new algorithms for computing all Schur functions sκ(x1, … , xn) for partitions κ such that | κ| ≤ N. For nonnegative arguments, x1, … , xn, both algorithms are subtraction-free and thus each Schur function is computed to high relative accuracy in floating point arithmetic. The cost of each algorithm per Schur function is O(n2).

Motivated by analogies with basic density theorems in analytic number theory, we introduce a notion (and variations) of the homological density of one space in another. We use Weil's number field/function field analogy to predict coincidences for limiting homological densities of various sequences Zn(d1,…,dm)(X) of spaces of 0-cycles on manifolds X. The main theorem in this paper is that these topological predictions, which seem strange from a purely topological viewpoint, are indeed true. One obstacle to proving such a theorem is the combinatorial complexity of all possible “collisions” of points. This problem does not arise in the simplest (and classical) case (m,n)=(1,2) of configuration spaces. To overcome this obstacle we apply the Björner–Wachs theory of lexicographic shellability from algebraic combinatorics.

An important feature of the planetary oceanic dynamics is that the aspect ratio (the ratio of the depth to horizontal width) is very small. As a result, the hydrostatic approximation (balance), derived by performing the formal small aspect ratio limit to the Navier–Stokes equations, is considered as a fundamental component in the primitive equations of the large-scale ocean. In this paper, we justify rigorously the small aspect ratio limit of the Navier–Stokes equations to the primitive equations. Specifically, we prove that the Navier–Stokes equations, after being scaled appropriately by the small aspect ratio parameter of the physical domain, converge strongly to the primitive equations, globally and uniformly in time, and the convergence rate is of the same order as the aspect ratio parameter. This result validates the hydrostatic approximation for the large-scale oceanic dynamics. Notably, only the weak convergence of this small aspect ratio limit was rigorously justified before.

This paper introduces parametrized homology, a continuous-parameter generalization of levelset zigzag persistent homology that captures the behavior of the homology of the fibers of a real-valued function on a topological space. This information is encoded as a “barcode” of real intervals, each corresponding to a homological feature supported over that interval; or, equivalently, as a persistence diagram. Points in the persistence diagram are classified algebraically into four classes; geometrically, the classes identify the distinct ways in which homological features perish at the boundaries of their interval of persistence. We study the conditions under which spaces fibered over the real line have a well-defined parametrized homology; we establish the stability of these invariants and we show how the four classes of persistence diagram correspond to the four diagrams that appear in the theory of extended persistence.

A major open problem in the theory of twisted commutative algebras (tca’s) is proving noetherianity of finitely generated tca’s. For bounded tca’s this is easy; in the unbounded case, noetherianity is only known for Sym (Sym 2(C∞)) and Sym (⋀ 2(C∞)). In this paper, we establish noetherianity for the skew-commutative versions of these two algebras, namely ⋀ (Sym 2(C∞)) and ⋀ (⋀ 2(C∞)). The result depends on work of Serganova on the representation theory of the infinite periplectic Lie superalgebra, and has found application in the work of Miller–Wilson on “secondary representation stability” in the cohomology of configuration spaces.

For commutative rings, we introduce the notion of a universal grading, which can be viewed as the “largest possible grading”. While not every commutative ring (or order) has a universal grading, we prove that every reduced order has a universal grading, and this grading is by a finite group. Examples of graded orders are provided by group rings of finite abelian groups over rings of integers in number fields. We also generalize known properties of nilpotents, idempotents, and roots of unity in such group rings to the case of graded orders; this has applications to cryptography. Lattices play an important role in this paper; a novel aspect is that our proofs use that the additive group of any reduced order can in a natural way be equipped with a lattice structure.

In this paper we prove a conjecture of Alexander and Currier that states, except for covering maps of equidistant surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space, a complete, nonnegatively curved immersed hypersurface in hyperbolic space is necessarily properly embedded.

In this paper, we investigate left-invariant geodesic orbit metrics on connected simple Lie groups, where the metrics are formed by the structures of flag manifolds. We prove that all these left-invariant geodesic orbit metrics on simple Lie groups are naturally reductive.

In a remark in his seminal 1987 paper, Jones describes a way to define the Burau matrix of a positive braid using a metaphor of bowling a ball down a bowling alley with braided lanes. We extend this definition to allow multiple bowling balls to be bowled simultaneously. We obtain representations of the Iwahori–Hecke algebra and a cabled version of the Temperley–Lieb representation.

In this paper we study right S-Noetherian rings and modules, extending notions introduced by Anderson and Dumitrescu in commutative algebra to noncommutative rings. Two characterizations of right S-Noetherian rings are given in terms of completely prime right ideals and point annihilator sets. We also prove an existence result for completely prime point annihilators of certain S-Noetherian modules with the following consequence in commutative algebra: If a module M over a commutative ring is S-Noetherian with respect to a multiplicative set S that contains no zero-divisors for M, then M has an associated prime.

This article is devoted to the mass-less energy critical Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system in 4+1 dimensions. In earlier work of the second author, joint with Krieger and Sterbenz, we have proved that this problem has global well-posedness and scattering in the Coulomb gauge for small initial data. This article is the second of a sequence of three papers of the authors, whose goal is to show that the same result holds for data with arbitrarily large energy. Our aim here is to show that large data solutions persist for as long as one has small energy dispersion; hence failure of global well-posedness must be accompanied with a non-trivial energy dispersion.
