This paper illustrates the main lines of development of the sociological literature centred on the theme of "organisational boundaries" in their relationship with legal norms and regulatory institutions. In particular, the paper will focus on three nodes developed by this literature: the recognition of the substantial nature of "regulatory arbitrage" of the organizational processes of fragmentation and the centrality of regulatory structures in their analysis; the role and modes of action of regulatory actors and how these are influenced by the characteristics of organizational configurations; the (in-)application of norms as a variable, the ways in which the processes of organizational fragmentation favour it and the role of the state in these processes. The paper analyzes the discussion between labour lawyers and labour sociologists about the company's limits, emphasizing how the topics concerning company assets and conformation have long remained left out from this dialogue. The organizational changes of the 1990s prompted a reflection from both sectors, however they mostly proceeded on the parallel paths with extremely rare and episodic references and quotations from each other, largely limited to referring to a different perspective of investigation. The comparison has become more relevant only in the last few years with regards to the aggravation of outsourcing phenomenon and the consequent evasion from specific regulation, thanks to the possibility of organizing production by exploiting the existing regulatory and wage differentials between different companies, different industrial sectors and also between different countries. The paper therefore looks at the differentiations and asymmetries that have arisen by exploiting the boundaries and the differentials associated with them, investigating the use of various legal instruments, from contracts to business networks to global value chains. This paper looks at the breakdown of the normative model of employment that underpinned the mid-twentieth-century welfare state. The focus of the chapter is the slow, but continuous, dismantling of labor protections that happened in the last decades which has played a crucial role in facilitating the rise of digital platforms. Thus, while on one hand this can be related to the limits that the traditional labor protections had, especially in including women, migrants, and other usually considered more “marginal” workers; on the other it is a product of the new global division of labor and of the way in which technologies have been used to outsource and manage remote working. These developments are being expanded by the increasing “platformization” of the economy that is spreading across sectors digital management and new forms of task-based work directly controlled by algorithms. Despite the birth of new union forms, capable of intercepting the demands and defending the interests of gig workers, the paper concludes by highlighting how these achievements, despite their relevance, are not a definitive solution, but it is necessary to aim for a new set of universal workers’ rights. This paper presents the alternating relationship between labour sociology and labour law from the 20th century to the present day. It reconstructs the original separateness of the two disciplines, then the intense dialogue between sociologists and labour lawyers in the 1960s and 1970s, then again the divide during the so-called 'post-Fordist' transition. Finally, the main themes of discussion between sociology and labour law today are illustrated, introducing the contributions collected in the monographic section. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to deepen the role of unions in the context of the implementation of “Industry 4.0” technologies at the level of SMEs. To this purpose, interviews were conducted with union representatives of the metalworking sector in the Veneto region, both at firm and territory level. The evidence has been organized around three dimensions: adaptation of firms to changes coming from the external environment; employees’ skills; attitude and support of management and ownership. The results show that there is a link between the prospects for technological innovation and the future of local bargaining strategies. The paper elaborates the results of a research conducted on the use of the Development Contract by companies, an instrument that has become central to Italian industrial policy. What emerges is that the implementation of the contract tends to generate territorial differentiated networks of actors and interests. More specifically, the common thread concerns the role of individual companies in the formation and institutionalization of networks. The goal is to understand if and how the use of this tool has influenced the decision-making choices and competitive strategies of companies, triggering organizational modernization processes and facilitating development plans. Through the analysis of the investments made, it is therefore found that the Contract responds to three different functions, which in some cases are combined: an innovative function; a redistributive function, a containment function of industrial crises. So far, food-delivery riders have been addressed in reference to broad socio-economic processes related to the diffusion of digital labour platforms. Adopting a dispositional approach, this paper frames the rider’s occupation as a specific and openended occupation. We try to shed light on the dynamics of differentiation and positioning within this occupational space, thus recomposing its heterogeneity. The article is based on a mixed-methods research carried out in Milan in 2020, centred on an “observant participation” of seven months, during which the researcher worked as a rider. The influence of spirituality in organizational contexts has attracted a significant and growing number of scholars to understand whether and how spirituality can influence workplace behaviour. This paper aims to offer a critical reflection of the scientific literature related to spirituality at work. The corpus under analysis, identified through the SCOPUS database, consists of 359 entries. After having coded the textual material, a content analysis was conducted. From the analysis, it emerges how spirituality has the power to impact on both group and organizational levels, manifesting itself in behaviours and in attitudes with which we look at ourselves, others, and the world. The article explores the contradictory relationship between workers' experience of ecology and working-class environmentalism in the case study of Italsider/(ex)Ilva in Taranto (Apulia, Italy), on the methodological basis of social ethnography. The main thesis is that a new - qualitative and historically solid - analysis of such, complex relationship makes it possible on the one hand to deconstruct the seemingly natural opposition between employment and health, and on the other hand to open up unprecedented scenarios for the development of a different labor-based perspective on the ecological crisis. The structure of the article is as follows: the first paragraph situates the research from a theoretical point of view, against the background of an emerging field of investigation: environmental labor studies (§1). The second makes its methodology explicit (§2). The following ones examine two phases of Taranto's industrial, steelbased development - the public management (§3) and the private one, during which the eco-sanitary crisis deflagrates (§4) - in an attempt to articulate the elusive and non-linear relationship between workers' experience of ecology and working-class environmentalism - until the agreement with Arcelor Mittal in September 2018, starting from which a largely different story opens up. This article analyses the restructuring and reconversion programme carried by a multinational automotive company based in Tuscany in the shift to electric mobility. It questions the conceptualizations and characteristics of the strategies promoted by the various actors to mitigate adverse social effects and new employment risks which are associated with the transition to a low-carbon economy. The reference to the recent literature on just transition highlights the persistence of governance structures and localised approaches to the crisis and its restorative management that seem to prevent a more general rethinking of welfare and social protection structures. In Italy the estimated rates of young graduates in situation of overeducation ranges from 23% to 36%, depending on the measurement method adopted. In order to address this phenomenon, the Minister of Education took different actions, among them: curricular internships are recommended and there are incentives for firms to provide post-graduate internships. The rationale is that through the internship experiences graduates develop professional skills that would allow recent graduates to be employed better and faster. This study investigates whether curricular and extracurricolar internships contrast overeducation; in so doing it also assess the effects of the internship actions. We utilized AlmaLaurea unbalanced panel survey-data on Graduates' Employment Status involving overall M.A. graduates interviewed at the time of graduation, and subsequently at one, three and five years from completion of their degree, respectively. The article intends to critically investigate the current structure of labor law still focused, from an axiological and regulatory point of view, on the predominance of the case of subordinate work, where it would be time to reconsider how all work falls within the capitalist production process. Overcoming the existing fracture be-tween legal norm and social reality, a unitary and at the same time pluralistic idea of work can allow a new law policy and a different regulatory architecture, aimed at the construction of social protections linked to personal work in favor of others, independently the type of negotiation and the contractual forms used, and regardless of the legal categories of autonomy or subordination. This article analyses the multidimensional and interrelated impacts of outsourcing on labour. Outsourcing has experienced a strong diffusion in the last decades, spreading across various areas, firms and sectors. Its ability to adapt to different social and regulatory situations has made it one of the main instruments of production restructuring, leading some researchers to consider it a paradigmatic form of the organisation of contemporary capitalism. Although much of the emphasis in the sociological literature on the implications of outsourcing has been placed upon the transformation of employment regimes, the worsening of working conditions and challenges to workers' representation, we find that other dimensions of labour relations are also generally impacted, including the labour process, wage determination, workplace politics and the social composition of the workforce. By reviewing and combining some strands of literature, we argue that the paradigmatic character of outsourcing, in addition to its great widespread at the global level, must be found in its ability to trigger multiple and chained processes of transformation that deeply modify the employment relationship. The article proposes an analysis about trade unions in Italian legal system, in order to prove unfounded the indifference of the current digital ecosystem towards the role of traditional trade unions and its practices. The author considers the case of the unions of digital platform work as an effective example of collective conflict, which has shown us even unprecedented forms of action, and which provides evidence that, contrary to the many criticisms, the union and its action have not collapsed. This contribution aims to highlight, alongside the centrality assumed by digital platforms in our society, the emergence of an "infrastructural power" - a category we take from Michael Mann work - capable of conditioning both the work activities and the very forms of everyday life. The goal of this theoretical reflection is therefore the origin of this power, its characteristics, and the implications it has in both productive and reproductive capacity of society. After tracing the long-term transformations that have taken place on the level of connectivity, the rise of platform's social imaginary will be analyzed, as well as the consequences that it produces from the point of view of labor and within a wider ecological perspective. In the conclusions, the infrastructural lens will also be presented as a promising path to rethink an "inversion" of the material and immaterial components of the "infrastructural power" of platforms. The “citizenship income”, established in Italy in 2019, is analysed from the perspective of case management carried out through digital platforms by its actors, called navigators, together with the staff of employment services. The practice of case management has been progressively associated with the policies of matching labour supply and demand through digital platforms in a social policy, called welfare-to-work, in which unemployment benefits are linked to labour reintegration. Based on a social ethnography research that collected qualified testimonies from the actors involved in the processes, the article investigates current perspectives and limits of the integration between Welfare and the use of digital platforms in the process of digitization of active labour policies. The article provides an overview of the ways in which STS perspectives inspired by infrastructure studies are analysing issues of work transformations in the digital age, and more specifically digital labor. After an introductory part dedicated to the presentation of infrastructure studies as a means of analysing digital infrastructures as governance tools, the article discusses two fields of analysis in which these perspectives cross the interdisciplinary studies of digital work: the understanding of digital labor as “human infrastructure” and the analysis of the phenomenon of “algorithmic governance” in the transformation of work. The article concludes with some reflections on the current evolutions of digital infrastructures as a “meta-infrastructure” of most other critical infrastructures, and on the link between this phenomenon and work transformations. Welfare (social policy) and punishment (penal policy) vary wildly across time and space, with social policy being more or less generous, and punishment more or less barbaric. What determines the generosity of social policies, and the humanity of penal policies? The principle of less eligibility holds that in every society, assistance will be made less attractive than lower wage work, and punishment will make crime less attractive than assistance. I argue that the principle of less eligibility determines the mix of welfare and punishment which is implemented to govern and manage poverty in a given society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents the main evidence of a recent research carried out on six regions on the gap in the number of managers and executives within Southern Italian companies, along with the lack of managerial culture in the South of the country. In fact, the role of managers in the process of economic and social development is particularly relevant, although less explored by socio-economic literature which, in turn, draws greater attention to entrepreneurs as well as to economic and political élites. Instead, managers and executives represent a privileged bench for analysis in order to deeper understand the dynamics within firms, the elements of backwardness and innovation, the strengths and weaknesses related to the development of modern enterprises. In a context such as the Italian Mezzogiorno which seems to be refractory to innovation, the presence and diffusion of management may represent a significant element of modernization and confer, where present, an added value to the company, improving productivity and performance, also triggering virtuous processes of economic and social growth and development for the territory. The article opens the monographic section dedicated to the relationship between religion(s) and organizations. After dwelling on the reasons of the scarce attention traditionally devoted to this nexus, the authors describe how this topic is now re-emerging almost unintentionally, through a research agenda that has gradually been enriched by contributions from different fields. They then review the main outcomes of its developments within organizational studies and highlight the most promising prospects for further study.
