Gyroscopes are integral components of inertial measurement units, which are used for guidance and stabilization of many platforms. This paper presents an algorithm for estimating the statistical parameters that govern the performance of rate gyros, i.e., the spectral densities R and Q of the angle random walk and rate random walk components, respectively. Previous work on gyro modeling is based on computing the Allan variance of a gyro signal and using a well-known formula for its mean. The algorithm in this paper uses these as well as the following quantities, which are derived in this paper: the theoretical variance of the Allan variance and the covariance between different Allan variance points. The algorithm is developed using the formulation of the best linear unbiased estimator from statistical estimation theory. The performance of the algorithm is demonstrated using simulated and experimental data. A bound on the error in the integral of the gyro output, as a function of Q and R, is also derived. Topic modeling has become a widely used tool for document management. However, there are few topic models distinguishing the importance of documents on different topics. In this paper, we propose a framework LIMTopic to incorporate link based importance into topic modeling. To instantiate the framework, RankTopic and HITSTopic are proposed by incorporating topical pagerank and topical HITS into topic modeling respectively. Specifically, ranking methods are first used to compute the topical importance of documents. Then, a generalized relation is built between link importance and topic modeling. We empirically show that LIMTopic converges after a small number of iterations in most experimental settings. The necessity of incorporating link importance into topic modeling is justified based on KL-Divergences between topic distributions converted from topical link importance and those computed by basic topic models. To investigate the document network summarization performance of topic models, we propose a novel measure called log-likelihood of ranking-integrated document-word matrix. Extensive experimental results show that LIMTopic performs better than baseline models in generalization performance, document clustering and classification, topic interpretability and document network summarization performance. Moreover, RankTopic has comparable performance with relational topic model (RTM) and HITSTopic performs much better than baseline models in document clustering and classification. This paper concerns the correction of refracted propagation effects for airborne radar tracking. An algorithm based on the Kalman filter (KF) is developed that compensates for range and elevation refraction errors, which were analytically derived using a simplified tropospheric model. In particular, the refraction error model applies to a spherically stratified troposphere and does not include the effects of azimuthal refraction errors, small-scale fluctuations, or ducting. The effectiveness of the proposed tracking algorithm is assessed in the presence of tropospheric parameter mismatch and measurement noise. Both theoretical and numerical results are described for a medium range scenario, and a quasi-ellipsoidal racetrack is chosen for the air platform that carries the radar. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Image formation algorithms in a variety of applications have explicit or implicit dependence on a mathematical model of the observation process. Inaccuracies in the observation model may cause various degradations and artifacts in the reconstructed images. The application of interest in this paper is synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging, which particularly suffers from motion-induced model errors. These types of errors result in phase errors in SAR data, which cause defocusing of the reconstructed images. Particularly focusing on imaging of fields that admit a sparse representation, we propose a sparsity-driven method for joint SAR imaging and phase error correction. Phase error correction is performed during the image formation process. The problem is set up as an optimization problem in a nonquadratic regularization-based framework. The method involves an iterative algorithm, where each iteration of which consists of consecutive steps of image formation and model error correction. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the approach for various types of phase errors, as well as the improvements that it provides over existing techniques for model error compensation in SAR. This paper presents a method for determining the double outage contingencies that threaten the system without solving the full contingency set. Two methods for contingency screening with complementary properties are presented. The results of the algorithms are compared to the full double outage contingency analysis results for a large North American case. The results show that the screening algorithms are able to detect nearly all of the contingencies that will result in violations, while requiring only a small fraction of the contingencies to be solved. Augmented Lagrangian variational formulations and alternating optimization have been adopted to solve distributed parameter estimation problems. The alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is one of such formulations/optimization methods. Very recently, the number of applications of the ADMM, or variants of it, to solve inverse problems in image and signal processing has increased at an exponential rate. The reason for this interest is that ADMM decomposes a difficult optimization problem into a sequence of much simpler problems. In this paper, we use the ADMM to reconstruct piecewise-smooth distributed parameters of elliptical partial differential equations from noisy and linear (blurred) observations of the underlying field. The distributed parameters are estimated by solving an inverse problem with total variation (TV) regularization. The proposed instance of the ADMM solves, in each iteration, an \ell2 and a decoupled \ell2 - \ell1 optimization problems. An operator splitting is used to simplify the treatment of the TV regularizer, avoiding its smooth approximation and yielding a simple yet effective ADMM reconstruction method compared with previously proposed approaches. The competitiveness of the proposed method, with respect to the state-of-the-art, is illustrated in simulated 1-D and 2-D elliptical equation problems, which are representative of many real applications. We present an energy-minimization-based framework for locating the centerline and estimating the width of tubelike objects from their structural network with a nonparametric model. The nonparametric representation promotes simple modeling of nested branches and n-way furcations, i.e., structures that abound in an arterial network, e.g., a cerebrovascular circulation. Our method is capable of extracting the entire vascular tree from an angiogram in a single execution with a proper initialization. A succinct initial model from the user with arterial network inlets, outlets, and branching points is sufficient for complex vasculature. The novel method is based upon the theory of principal curves. In this paper, theoretical extension to grayscale angiography is discussed, and an algorithm to find an arterial network as principal curves is also described. Quantitative validation on a number of simulated data sets, synthetic volumes of 19 BrainWeb vascular models, and 32 Rotterdam Coronary Artery volumes was conducted. We compared the algorithm to a state-of-the-art method and further tested it on two clinical data sets. Our algorithmic outputs—lumen centers and flow channel widths—are important to various medical and clinical applications, e.g., vasculature segmentation, registration and visualization, virtual angioscopy, and vascular atlas formation and population study. The linear mixture model is a convenient way to describe image pixels as a linear combination of pure spectra – termed endmembers. The fractional contribution from each endmember is calculated through inversion of the linear model. Despite the simplicity of the model, a nonnegativity constraint that is imposed on the fractions leads to an unmixing problem for which it is hard to find a closed analytical solution. Current solutions to this problem involve iterative algorithms, which are computationally intensive and not appropriate for unmixing large number of pixels. This paper presents an algorithm to build fuzzy membership functions that are equivalent to the least square solution of the fully constrained linear spectral unmixing problem. Affine registration has a long and venerable history in computer vision literature, and in particular, extensive work has been done for affine registration in \\rlapI\kern 2.0pt\R^2 and \\rlapI\kern 2.0pt\R^3. This paper studies affine registration in \\rlapI\kern 2.0pt\R^m with m typically ranging from 4 to 12. To justify breaking of this dimension barrier, the first part of the paper describes three novel matching problems that can be formulated and solved as affine point-set registration problems in dimensions greater than three: stereo correspondence under motion, image set matching, and covariant point-set matching, problems that are not only interesting in their own right but also have potential for important vision applications. Unfortunately, most of the existing affine registration algorithms do not generalize easily to higher dimensions due to their inefficiency. Therefore, the second part of this paper develops a novel algorithm for estimating the affine transform between two point sets in \\rlapI\kern 2.0pt\R^m. Specifically, the algorithm follows the common approach of iteratively solving the correspondences and transform. The initial correspondences are determined using the novel notion of local spectral features, features constructed from local distance matrices. Unlike many correspondence-based methods, the proposed algorithm is capable of registering point sets of different size, and the use of local features provides some degree of robustness against noise and outliers. The proposed algorithm is validated on a variety of synthetic point sets in different dimensions with varying degrees of deformation and noise, and the paper also shows experimentally that several instances of the aforementioned three matching problems can indeed be solved satisfactorily using the proposed affine registration algorithm. Identifying incomplete or partial fingerprints from a large fingerprint database remains a difficult challenge today. Existing studies on partial fingerprints focus on one-to-one matching using local ridge details. In this paper, we investigate the problem of retrieving candidate lists for matching partial fingerprints by exploiting global topological features. Specifically, we propose an analytical approach for reconstructing the global topology representation from a partial fingerprint. First, we present an inverse orientation model for describing the reconstruction problem. Then, we provide a general expression for all valid solutions to the inverse model. This allows us to preserve data fidelity in the existing segments while exploring missing structures in the unknown parts. We have further developed algorithms for estimating the missing orientation structures based on some a priori knowledge of ridge topology features. Our statistical experiments show that our proposed model-based approach can effectively reduce the number of candidates for pair-wised fingerprint matching, and thus significantly improve the system retrieval performance for partial fingerprint identification. Existing approaches to image reconstruction in photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT) with acoustically heterogeneous media are limited to weakly varying media, are computationally burdensome, and/or cannot effectively mitigate the effects of measurement data incompleteness and noise. In this work, we develop and investigate a discrete imaging model for PACT that is based on the exact photoacoustic (PA) wave equation and facilitates the circumvention of these limitations. A key contribution of the work is the establishment of a procedure to implement a matched forward and backprojection operator pair associated with the discrete imaging model, which permits application of a wide-range of modern image reconstruction algorithms that can mitigate the effects of data incompleteness and noise. The forward and backprojection operators are based on the k-space pseudospectral method for computing numerical solutions to the PA wave equation in the time domain. Detection of salient motion in a video involves determining which motion is attended to by the human visual system in the presence of background motion that consists of complex visuals that are constantly changing. Salient motion is marked by its predictability compared to the more complex unpredictable motion of the background such as fluttering of leaves, ripples in water, dispersion of smoke, and others. We introduce a novel approach to detect salient motion based on the concept of “observability” from the output pixels, when the video sequence is represented as a linear dynamical system. The group of output pixels with maximum saliency is further used to model the holistic dynamics of the salient region. The pixel saliency map is bolstered by two region-based saliency maps, which are computed based on the similarity of dynamics of the different spatiotemporal patches in the video with the salient region dynamics, in a global as well as a local sense. The resulting algorithm is tested on a set of challenging sequences and compared to state-of-the-art methods to showcase its superior performance on grounds of its computational efficiency and ability to detect salient motion. In this correspondence, our goal is to develop a visual tracking algorithm that is able to track moving objects in the presence of illumination variations in the scene and that is robust to occlusions. We treat the illumination and motion (x\ -y translation and scale) parameters as the unknown “state” sequence. The observation is the entire image, and the observation model allows for occasional occlusions (modeled as outliers). The nonlinearity and multimodality of the observation model necessitate the use of a particle filter (PF). Due to the inclusion of illumination parameters, the state dimension increases, thus making regular PFs impractically expensive. We show that the recently proposed approach using a PF with a mode tracker can be used here since, even in most occlusion cases, the posterior of illumination conditioned on motion and the previous state is unimodal and quite narrow. The key idea is to importance sample on the motion states while approximating importance sampling by posterior mode tracking for estimating illumination. Experiments demonstrate the advantage of the proposed algorithm over existing PF-based approaches for various face and vehicle tracking. We are also able to detect illumination model changes, e.g., those due to transition from shadow to sunlight or vice versa by using the generalized expected log-likelihood statistics and successfully compensate for it without ever loosing track. An effective boundary element numerical algorithm combining the wavelet transform and generalized minimum residual method for the solution of the electric field problem in substations is proposed. The realistic numerical results are presented to demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of this algorithm for the achievement of more convergence ratio and computational efficiency on the premise of reliable accuracy; the proposed algorithm can be employed to perform the calculation of electric field in substations for the analysis of electromagnetic compatibility to improve the stable operation of power grid. Quantitative methods such as model-based predictive control are known to facilitate the design of strategies to manipulate biological systems. This study develops a sparse-grid-based adaptive model predictive control (MPC) strategy to direct HL60 cellular differentiation. Sparse-grid sampling and interpolation support a computationally efficient adaptive MPC scheme in which multiple data-consistent regions of the model parameter space are identified and used to calculate a control compromise. The algorithm is evaluated in silico with structural model mismatch. Simulations demonstrate how the multiscenario control strategy more effectively manages the mismatch compared to a single scenario approach. Furthermore, the controller is evaluated in vitro to differentiate HL60 cells in both normal and perturbed environments. The controller-derived input sequence successfully achieves and sustains the specified target level of granulocytes when implemented in the laboratory. The results and analysis given here imply that adoption of this experiment planning technique to direct cell differentiation within more complex tissue engineered constructs will require the use of a reasonably accurate mathematical model and an extension of this algorithm to multiobjective controller design.
