Simple Summary: Neuroblastoma is a rare type of cancer that usually affects children. The high-risk patients' expected survival rate is less than 50%. One reason is the lack of precision in the standard treatment protocol: a one-size-fits-all multi-modal therapy. The study presented in this paper was designed to address this deficit by optimising the use of two chemotherapeutic agents—vincristine and cyclophosphamide—during induction chemotherapy—the part of the protocol that shrinks the primary tumour before surgical removal. We combined a mathematical model and an optimisation algorithm to identify the best chemotherapy schedules for a cohort of virtual patients with different initial tumour compositions. Our results reveal novel strategies to exploit a pair of drugs with different levels of efficacy, provide a platform on which to individualise induction chemotherapy, and lay the foundation for a personalised therapy that leverages targeted therapies, multi-region sequencing, liquid biopsies, and modern computational methods to improve today's multi-modal therapy. Neuroblastoma is the most common extra-cranial solid tumour in children. Despite multi-modal therapy, over half of the high-risk patients will succumb. One contributing factor is the one-size-fits-all nature of multi-modal therapy. For example, during the first step (induction chemotherapy), the standard regimen (rapid COJEC) administers fixed doses of chemotherapeutic agents in eight two-week cycles. Perhaps because of differences in resistance, this standard regimen results in highly heterogeneous outcomes in different tumours. In this study, we formulated a mathematical model comprising ordinary differential equations. The equations describe the clonal evolution within a neuroblastoma tumour being treated with vincristine and cyclophosphamide, which are used in the rapid COJEC regimen, including genetically conferred and phenotypic drug resistance. The equations also describe the agents' pharmacokinetics. We devised an optimisation algorithm to find the best chemotherapy schedules for tumours with different pre-treatment clonal compositions. The optimised chemotherapy schedules exploit the cytotoxic difference between the two drugs and intra-tumoural clonal competition to shrink the tumours as much as possible during induction chemotherapy and before surgical removal. They indicate that induction chemotherapy can be improved by finding and using personalised schedules. More broadly, we propose that the overall multi-modal therapy can be enhanced by employing targeted therapies against the mutations and oncogenic pathways enriched and activated by the chemotherapeutic agents. To translate the proposed personalised multi-modal therapy into clinical use, patient-specific model calibration and treatment optimisation are necessary. This entails a decision support system informed by emerging medical technologies such as multi-region sequencing and liquid biopsies. We present an algorithm for passivity verification and enforcement of multivariate macromodels whose state-space matrices depend in closed form on a set of external or design parameters. Uniform passivity throughout the parameter space is a fundamental requirement of parameterized macromodels of physically passive structures, that must be guaranteed during model generation. Otherwise, numerical instabilities may occur, due to the ability of nonpassive models to generate energy. In this paper, we propose the first available algorithm that, starting from a generic parameter-dependent state-space model, identifies the regions in the frequency-parameter space where the model behaves locally as a nonpassive system. The approach we pursue is based on an adaptive sampling scheme in the parameter space, which iteratively constructs and perturbs the eigenvalue spectrum of suitable skew-Hamiltonian/Hamiltonian pencils, with the objective of identifying the regions where some of these eigenvalues become purely imaginary, thus pinpointing local passivity violations. The proposed scheme is able to detect all relevant violations. An outer iterative perturbation method is then applied to the model coefficients in order to remove such violations and achieve uniform passivity. Although a formal proof of global convergence is not available, the effectiveness of the proposed implementation of the passivity verification and enforcement schemes is demonstrated on several examples. The generation of mathematical models for the analysis of buildings with multiple thermal zones is a large and complex task. Furthermore, the order and complexity of the dynamical model are increased by the number of included thermal zones. To overcome this problem, this paper presents an algorithm to define the mathematical model automatically, using the geometric and physics parameters as inputs. Additionally, the spatial position of each thermal zone must be recorded in an arrangement called a contact matrix. The algorithm for modeling systems with multiple thermal zones is the main contribution of this work. This algorithm is presented in pseudocode format and as an annex, an implementation in MATLAB software. One of the advantages of this methodology is that it allows us to work with parallelepipeds and not necessarily cubic thermal zones. The algorithm allows us to generate mathematical models with symbolic variables, starting from the knowledge of how many thermal zones compose the system and its geometric organization. This information must be organized in a matrix arrangement called a contact matrix. Different arrays of thermal zones were constructed with wooden boxes to verify the functionality of the models generated with the algorithm. Each case provided information that allowed us to adjust the mathematical models and their simulations, obtaining a range of errors between experimental and simulated temperatures from 2.08 to 5.6 , depending on the number of thermal zones studied. Serial lines and assembly systems are two of the most fundamental production system structures used in practical manufacturing environments. While serial lines have been studied extensively in production systems literature and practice, assembly systems have received much less attention. Among existing results on assembly systems, most are focused on steady state performance evaluation, system properties, and improvement. On the other hand, transient behavior of such systems remains largely unexplored. In the framework of assembly systems with Bernoulli machines and finite buffers, this paper develops a mathematical model for transient analysis and derives closed-form formulas to calculate the real-time production rate, consumption rates, work-in-process, and probabilities of machine starvation and blockage, during transients. Then, an improved computationally efficient algorithm for transient performance evaluation in Bernoulli serial lines is proposed. Based on the improved algorithm, an effective and efficient method for transient performance evaluation in Bernoulli assembly systems is derived. For the quantitative applications of the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS), the geolocation accuracy of its sensor data records must be quantified during its on-orbit operation. In this paper, a refined coastline inflection point method is used to evaluate the on-orbit geolocation accuracy of SNPP ATMS. It is disclosed that for SNPP ATMS, the static error term with scan-angle-dependent feature is a dominant part among all the geolocation error sources. A mathematical model is then developed to convert the in-track and cross-track geolocation errors to the beam pointing Euler angles defined in the spacecraft coordinate system, which can be further used to construct the correction matrix for on-orbit geolocation process. By using the correction matrix built in this paper, the geolocation error is obviously reduced both at nadir and at the edge of the scan. The total geolocation error at nadir before/after correction is 3.8/0.8 km at K-band, 5.6/0.8 km at Ka-band, 3.3/0.4 km at V-band, and 1.5/0.1 km at W-band. The geolocation bias at the edge of the scan line before/after correction is 4.6/1.3 km at K-band, 9.4/1.8 km at Ka-band, 4.4/2.4 km at V-band, and 3.2/0.8 km at W-band. This paper proposes a new decentralized data-driven load restoration (DDLR) scheme for transmission and distribution (TD) systems with high penetration of wind power. Robust DDLR models are constructed in order to handle uncertainties and ensure the feasibility of decentralized schemes. The Wasserstein metric is used to describe the ambiguity sets of probability distributions in order to build the complete DDLR model and realize computationally tractable formulation. A data-driven model-nested analytical target cascading (DATC) algorithm is developed to obtain the final load restoration result by iteratively solving small-scale mathematical models. The proposed DDLR scheme provides load restoration results with adjustable robustness, and performance efficiency is independent from the amount of data. The DDLR scheme makes full use of the available data while respecting information privacy requirements of independent operated systems, and ensures the feasibility of a decentralized load restoration strategy even in the worst-case condition. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated using a small-scale TD system and a large-scale system with the IEEE 118-bus TS and thirty IEEE-33 DSs, showing high computational efficiency and superior restoration performance. In this paper, we investigate the use of first-order reliability methods to quantify the uncertainty in the remaining useful life (RUL) estimate of components used in engineering applications. The prediction of RUL is affected by several sources of uncertainty, and it is important to systematically quantify their combined effect on the RUL prediction in order to aid risk assessment, risk mitigation, and decision-making. While sampling-based algorithms have been conventionally used for quantifying the uncertainty in RUL, analytical approaches are computationally cheaper, and sometimes they are better suited for online decision-making. Exact analytical algorithms may not be available for practical engineering applications, but effective approximations can be made using first-order reliability methods. This paper describes three first-order reliability-based methods for RUL uncertainty quantification: first-order second moment method (FOSM), the first-order reliability method (FORM), and the inverse first-order reliability method (inverse-FORM). The inverse-FORM methodology is particularly useful in the context of online health monitoring, and this method is illustrated using the power system of an unmanned aerial vehicle, where the goal is to predict the end of discharge of a lithium-ion battery. This paper proposes an image enhancement algorithm based on the theory of image segmentation and image frequency. First, a mathematical model corresponding to the pixel frequency is established by using the difference of pigment values between the pixels in the image and the surrounding pixels (i.e., pixel receptive field). Then, the image is divided into the low frequency region (background area), low-medium frequency region (foreground area), medium-high frequency region (target area) and high frequency region (detail area) by a pixel frequency characteristic graph. Gamma correction, MSRCR, MSR, top hat + bottom hat are used for image enhancement for each area, and then the parts are merged. Three indicators of PSNR, SSIM, and MSE are introduced to evaluate the quality of the enhanced image. The results show that the image enhanced by this algorithm has the highest PSNR and SSIM values and the lowest MSE value, indicating that the enhancement effect of this algorithm is better. The paper aims to present an integrated approach to solve the decision-making problem under the probabilistic hesitant fuzzy information (PHFI) features, which is an extension of the hesitant fuzzy set. The considered PHFI not only allows multiple opinions, but also associates occurrence probability to each opinion, which increases the reliability of the information. Motivated by these features of PHFI, an approach is presented to solve the decision problem with partial known information about the attribute and expert weights. In addition, an algorithm for finding some missing values in the preference information is presented and stated their properties. Afterward, the Hamy mean operator has been used to aggregate the different collective information into a single one. Also, we presented a COPRAS method to the PHFI for ranking the given alternatives. The presented algorithm has been demonstrated through a case study of cloud vendor selection and its validity has been revealed by comparing the approach results with the several existing algorithm results. In this paper, a multiproduct multiperiod capacitated production system that has been organized as a flow shop is considered. The main novelty of the paper is proposing a more efficient mathematical model for the problem of integrating lot sizing and scheduling with sequence-dependent setups. In comparison to the former model, because of fewer continuous and binary decision variables and constraints in the proposed model, this model is very easier to solve. Comparison between two models proves the superiority of the proposed model. Two mixed integer programming-based approaches with rolling horizon framework have been used to solve this model. To evaluate the performance of the proposed model and solution method, problems of different scales have been studied. The used algorithms search the solution space for both lot-sizing and scheduling problems and find a combination of production planning and scheduling that is feasible and close to optimum. Crude oil transportation is a central logistics operation in petrochemical industry because its cost represents a significant part in the cost of petrochemical products. In this paper, we consider the transportation by tankers or trucks. We show that under some realistic assumptions, this problem can be transformed into a single item lot sizing problem with limited production and inventory capacities. We develop a strongly polynomial dynamic programming algorithm to solve it. The problem of crude oil transportation is very difficult. There are few efficient methods in this domain. In the model considered in this paper, crude oil is directly shipped from a supplier port to n client ports to satisfy customer demands over T future periods. The supplier port disposes a fleet of identical tankers with limited capacity. The inventory capacities of customers are limited and time-varying. The backlogging is admitted. The objective is to find an optimal shipment plan minimizing the total cost over the T-period horizon. When the number of tankers is unlimited and customer demands are independent, shipment plans of different customers become independent. This problem can be considered as n independent problems. Each of them can be transformed into a single item lot sizing problem with limited production and inventory capacities, where tanker capacity corresponds to production capacity in classical lot sizing models. The main contributions of this paper are: 1) transformation of a transportation planning problem into a lot-sizing problem; 2) an O(T^3) algorithm is proposed to solve it; and 3) the results can also be applied to terrestrial transportation with direct deliveries. The end-of-life (EOL) disassembly sequencing problem (DSP) has become increasingly important in the process of handling EOL products. This paper proposes a solution procedure for the “EOL DSP”; the procedure is based on a novel soft-computing algorithm that utilizes modified “simplified swarm optimization,” and the procedure combines the precedence preservative operator, feasible solution generator, self-adaptive parameter control, and repetitive pairwise exchange procedures. By taking into consideration the non-deterministic polynomial time (NP)-complete nature of the problem, the proposed algorithm efficiently seeks the optimal disassembly sequence with a novel approach; this approach involves reducing the initial solution space and using a combination of soft-computing algorithms for achieving higher computational efficiency and solution quality. Establishing causal relations between random variables from observational data is perhaps the most important challenge in today’s science. In remote sensing and geosciences, this is of special relevance to better understand the earth’s system and the complex interactions between the governing processes. In this paper, we focus on an observational causal inference, and thus, we try to estimate the correct direction of causation using a finite set of empirical data. In addition, we focus on the more complex bivariate scenario that requires strong assumptions and no conditional independence tests can be used. In particular, we explore the framework of (nondeterministic) additive noise models, which relies on the principle of independence between the cause and the generating mechanism. A practical algorithmic instantiation of such principle only requires: 1) two regression models in the forward and backward directions and 2) the estimation of statistical independence between the obtained residuals and the observations. The direction leading to more independent residuals is decided to be the cause. We instead propose a criterion that uses the sensitivity (derivative) of the dependence estimator, the sensitivity criterion allows to identify samples most affecting the dependence measure, and hence, the criterion is robust to spurious detections. We illustrate the performance in a collection of 28 geoscience causal inference problems, a database of radiative transfer models simulations and machine learning emulators in vegetation parameter modeling involving 182 problems, and assessing the impact of different regression models in a carbon cycle problem. The criterion achieves the state-of-the-art detection rates in all cases, and it is generally robust to noise sources and distortions. In this paper, the application of optimal state estimation and optimal state feedback algorithms for real-time active magnetic bearing control is treated. A linear quadratic Gaussian controller, consisting of an extended Kalman filter and an optimal state feedback regulator, is implemented. It is shown that this controller yields improved rotor positioning accuracy, better system dynamics, higher bearing stiffness, and reduced control energy effort compared to the conventionally used proportional–integral–differential control approaches. In addition, a method for compensating unbalance-caused forces and vibrations of the magnetically levitated rotor is presented which is based on the estimation of unknown disturbance forces. In this paper, a new method is proposed to identify and classify the data obtained by the sensor network (SN) for the detection of mines. This method is used for the identification of antitank and antipersonnel mines and classification of buried objects within a target region. In this paper, a mobile SN is used to detect mines and some other objects buried and creating magnetic anomaly in and around the region where they are found, with the behavior of the individual sensors swarming onto the area under which a mine or any other object is buried. The process of collecting data by the SN and modeling it mathematically are explained in detail. The SN is modeled as a fictitious two-dimensional spatial impulse sampler. This paper is motivated by clearing the territories of mine fields to open them to agriculture. It is very important because, currently, in some countries, very fertile territories around the borders are covered by buried mines. The approach is basically based on magnetic anomaly measurements, which directly tackles the subregions corresponding to buried objects whether they represent objects that are separately located or occluded by other objects. It is based on a new developed method that is called “the back-most object detection and identification algorithm.” This method is fully automatic, and there is no human intervention throughout the process. In this paper, classification of objects is based on their well-known shapes and dimensions. Therefore, there is no need for sophisticated learning algorithms to achieve classification. The experimental results are given both for detection and identification of a single mine and classification of a number of mines and any other objects that have a potential of giving false alarms in a target region. This paper proposes the design of robust repetitive control with time-varying sampling periods. First, it develops a new frequency domain method to design a low-order, stable, robust, and causal IIR repetitive compensator using an optimization method to achieve fast convergence and high tracking accuracy. As such, a new stable and causal repetitive controller can be implemented independently to reduce the design complexity. The comprehensive analysis and comparison study are presented. Then, this paper extends the method to design a robust repetitive controller, which compensates time-varying periodic signals in a known range. This paper deals with the stability problem of selected induction motor speed estimators in the case of the regenerating mode operation. Two effective solutions are taken into consideration: adaptive full-order observer and model reference adaptive system-type estimator based on the current flux model and stator current estimation. The two estimation algorithms are compared in detail, namely their mathematical models, theoretical stability analysis, unstable operation areas, and stability improvement methods. The speed adaptation mechanism is extended with an additional shift angle in both cases. The theoretical analysis and simulation test results are validated by wide experimental tests. This paper introduces a mathematical model that incorporates the pertinent optical and physiological properties of skin reflections with the objective to increase our understanding of the algorithmic principles behind remote photoplethysmography (rPPG). The model is used to explain the different choices that were made in existing rPPG methods for pulse extraction. The understanding that comes from the model can be used to design robust or application-specific rPPG solutions. We illustrate this by designing an alternative rPPG method, where a projection plane orthogonal to the skin tone is used for pulse extraction. A method to find the minimized state machine cover of live and safe Petri nets (PNs) is proposed in this paper. It is required that a cover be obtained in some implementation methods of PN-based control algorithms and other applications such as data mining. Most of the known methods of its computation have at least exponential time and space complexity; this is true not only for the methods which guarantee a minimal cover is obtained but also for some methods of finding approximate solutions. The proposed algorithm is an approximation algorithm and has polynomial computational complexity. The experimental verification shows a very high efficiency of the presented technique. This paper investigates the use of a model-predictive control strategy to control a direct matrix converter. The proposed control method combines the features of the classical model-predictive control and the space vector modulation technique into a modulated model-predictive control. This new solution maintains all the characteristics of model-predictive control (such as fast transient response, multiobjective control using only one feedback loop, easy inclusion of nonlinearities and constraints of the system, and the flexibility to include other system requirements in the controller), adding the advantages of working at fixed switching frequency and improving the quality of the controlled waveforms. This paper investigates the data-based optimal control for a class of networked industrial processes with a double-layer architecture. Without knowing the dynamics of subsystems at the device layer, the index prediction function is constructed via the input/output signals, and radial basis function neural networks. The tuning laws for the index prediction function are obtained through the optimal control strategy. Then, by treating the network-induced phenomenon as random round-trip time delay and introducing the predictive algorithm, the compensation scheme is designed at the operation layer to dynamically decompose the setpoints. In this paper we propose a modified Elliptic Net algorithm to compute pairings. By reducing the number of the intermediate variables which should be updated in the iteration loop of the Elliptic Net algorithm, we speed up the computation of pairings. Experimental results show that the proposed method is more efficient than the original Elliptic Net algorithm on Barreto-Naehrig (BN) curves which are the best choice for implementing pairings at 128-bit security level. This paper aims to provide a solution method for the real-world hybrid flowshop scheduling problem resulting from a steelmaking process, which has important applications in modern iron and steel industry. We first present a mixed integer mathematic model based on a comprehensive investigation. Then, we develop a heuristic method and two improvement procedures for a given schedule based on the problem-specific characteristics. Finally, we propose an effective artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm with the job-permutation-based representation for solving the scheduling problem. The proposed ABC algorithm incorporates the heuristic and improvement procedures as well as new characteristics including a neighboring solution generation method and two enhanced strategies. To evaluate the proposed algorithm, we present several adaptations of other well-known and recent metaheuristics to the problem and conduct a serial of experiments with the instances generated according to real-world production process. Scientific workflows are used to process large amounts of data and perform complex analyses; thus, they require powerful computing resources to produce the desired results in an acceptable time and at reasonable costs. For this purpose, distributed resources such as cloud computing, with access to virtualized, infinite, and elastic resources are used to execute the workflows. For mapping tasks to computational resources, the problem must be modeled as a scheduling problem. The algorithm presented in this research is a hybrid algorithm based on a mathematical model called MHPSLP that performs the scheduling problem by breaking the problem into smaller subsets including scheduling bags of tasks, providing resources using an mixed integer linear mathematical (MILP) model. Gyroscopes are integral components of inertial measurement units, which are used for guidance and stabilization of many platforms. This paper presents an algorithm for estimating the statistical parameters that govern the performance of rate gyros, i.e., the spectral densities R and Q of the angle random walk and rate random walk components, respectively. Previous work on gyro modeling is based on computing the Allan variance of a gyro signal and using a well-known formula for its mean. The algorithm in this paper uses these as well as the following quantities, which are derived in this paper: the theoretical variance of the Allan variance and the covariance between different Allan variance points. The algorithm is developed using the formulation of the best linear unbiased estimator from statistical estimation theory. The performance of the algorithm is demonstrated using simulated and experimental data. A bound on the error in the integral of the gyro output, as a function of Q and R, is also derived. The video surveillance market is increasingly moving toward cheaper, efficient, portable, and high resolution systems. A typical video surveillance system consists of several cameras, which issue warnings or initiate smart reactions according to the analysis results of the captured video data. Many algorithms in video surveillance systems assume fixed lighting conditions for the monitored area. The performance of these algorithms is severely affected by the illumination changes of the monitored area. This paper presents an efficient intensity correction algorithm for high definition video surveillance applications. The new algorithm corrects both the global and the local intensity changes. It uses an apparent gain factor to correct the global intensity changes. In addition it corrects the local intensity changes using the local intensity mean and standard deviation. The proposed algorithm shows a promising performance when compared with other intensity correction algorithms. It has a low computational cost that makes it a suitable choice for real-time hardware implementation. This paper also presents a hardware implementation of the proposed algorithm using Xilinx Spartan3A digital signal processor (DSP) XC3SD3400A device. The targeted resolution is 1920\,\times\,1080 at 30 f/s. This paper presents an adaptive method for tracking the amplitude, phase, and frequency of a time-varying sinusoid in white noise. Although the conventional techniques like adaptive linear elements and discrete or fast Fourier transforms are still widely used in many applications, their accuracy and convergence speed pose serious limitations under sudden supply frequency drift, fundamental amplitude, or phase variations. This paper, therefore, proposes a fast and low-complexity multiobjective Gauss–Newton algorithm for estimating the fundamental phasor and frequency of the power signal instantly and accurately. Further, the learning parameters in the proposed algorithm are tuned iteratively to provide faster convergence and better accuracy. The proposed method can also be extended to include time-varying harmonics and interharmonics mixed with noise of low signal-to-noise ratio with a great degree of accuracy. A typical low- or medium-voltage distribution feeder consists of numerous branches as well as laterals and heterogenic conductor lines. The lack of measurement points and the presence of unbalanced loads make it more complicated for the construction of fault-location algorithms. In this paper, a brief and comprehensive review is presented which introduces and compares published papers in this area to date. In addition, the authors have devised a single-end fault-location algorithm using the distributed parameter model to overcome all of the aforementioned limitations in distribution feeders. The validity of the devised algorithm is studied within the PSCAD-EMTDC environment. This model provides more accurate results as the distributed nature of losses and capacitive effects are considered whereas in the available algorithms, these are ignored. A comparison which is made between the proposed method and two of the most complete available algorithms shows the superiority of our algorithm. This paper focuses on the optimization of a linear actuator by the “output space mapping (OSM)” method. The underlying objective of this work lies in the minimization of the time required for the achievement of this optimal design. Indeed, in addition to the sole costs of optimization processes strictly speaking, the time needed for the developpement of the models is taken into account. In the context of OSM, two different finite-element models of the same actuator are used. This paper presents these modeling solutions and considers their corresponding accuracy. Results of this multi-objective optimization method are presented and compared with those obtained by the sequential simplex (SS) method based solely on the fine model. Both approaches give similar results. However, the comparison of their performances clearly shows that the OSM algorithm is an effective technique for reducing the computation time of optimization studies, even in the case of relatively simple electromagnetic structures. This paper proposes a spectral-graph-based algorithm for face image repairing, which can improve the recognition performance on occluded faces. The face completion algorithm proposed in this paper includes three main procedures: 1) sparse representation for partially occluded face classification; 2) image-based data mining; and 3) graph Laplace (GL) for face image completion. The novel part of the proposed framework is GL, as named from graphical models and the Laplace equation, and can achieve a high-quality repairing of damaged or occluded faces. The relationship between the GL and the traditional Poisson equation is proven. We apply our face repairing algorithm to produce completed faces, and use face recognition to evaluate the performance of the algorithm. Liquid crystal display (LCD) devices are well known for their slow responses due to the physical limitations of liquid crystals. Therefore, fast moving objects in a scene are often perceived as blurred. This effect is known as the LCD motion blur. In order to reduce LCD motion blur, an accurate LCD model and an efficient deblurring algorithm are needed. However, existing LCD motion blur models are insufficient to reflect the limitation of human-eye-tracking system. Also, the spatiotemporal equivalence in LCD motion blur models has not been proven directly in the discrete 2-D spatial domain, although it is widely used. There are three main contributions of this paper: modeling, analysis, and algorithm. First, a comprehensive LCD motion blur model is presented, in which human-eye-tracking limits are taken into consideration. Second, a complete analysis of spatiotemporal equivalence is provided and verified using real video sequences. Third, an LCD motion blur reduction algorithm is proposed. The proposed algorithm solves an l_1-norm regularized least-squares minimization problem using a subgradient projection method. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm gives higher peak SNR, lower temporal error, and lower spatial error than motion-compensated inverse filtering and Lucy–Richardson deconvolution algorithm, which are two state-of-the-art LCD deblurring algorithms. In this paper, we present a novel feature-based neural network (NN) approach for estimation of blood pressure (BP) from wrist oscillometric measurements. Unlike previous methods that use the raw oscillometric waveform envelope (OMWE) as input to the NN, in this paper, we propose to use features extracted from the envelope. The OMWE is mathematically modeled as a sum of two Gaussian functions. The optimum parameters of this model are found by minimizing the least squares error between the model and the OMWE using the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm and are used as features. Two separate feed-forward NNs (FFNNs) are then designed to estimate the systolic and diastolic BPs using these features. The FFNNs are trained using the resilient backpropagation learning algorithm and tested on a data set of BP measurements recorded from 85 subjects. The performance is then compared with that of the conventional maximum amplitude algorithm, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system, and already published NN-based methods. It is found that the proposed approach achieves lower values of mean absolute error and standard deviation of error in the estimation of BP. In addition, the proposed approach has the following advantages: lower complexity with respect to the design parameters, smaller training data set, and lower computational load. Maximum power point (MPP) tracking (MPPT) techniques are widely applied in photovoltaic (PV) systems to make PV array generate peak power which depends on solar irradiation. Among all the MPPT strategies, the incremental-conductance (INC) algorithm is widely employed due to easy implementation and high tracking accuracy. In this paper, a novel variable step-size incremental-resistance MPPT algorithm is introduced, which not only has the merits of INC but also automatically adjusts the step size to track the PV array MPP. Compared with the variable step-size INC method, the proposed scheme can greatly improve the MPPT response speed and accuracy at steady state simultaneously. Recent years have witnessed extensive research activity in modeling biological phenomena as well as in developing intervention strategies for such phenomena. S-systems, which offer a good compromise between accuracy and mathematical flexibility, are a promising framework for modeling the dynamical behavior of biological phenomena. In this paper, two different intervention strategies, namely direct and indirect, are proposed for the S-system model. In the indirect approach, the prespecified desired values for the target variables are used to compute the reference values for the control inputs, and two control algorithms, namely simple sampled-data control and model predictive control (MPC), are developed for transferring the control variables from their initial values to the computed reference ones. In the direct approach, a MPC algorithm is developed that directly guides the target variables to their desired values. The proposed intervention strategies are applied to the glycolytic–glycogenolytic pathway and the simulation results presented demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes. Automatic differentiation (AD) is introduced as a powerful technique to compute derivatives of functions given in the form of computer programs in high-level programming languages such as FORTRAN, C, or C++. This paper applies AD to compute error-free gradients of electromagnetic device sizing models. Then, the obtained gradients are exploited in optimization to size electromagnetic devices by means of minimizing a cost function with constrained parameters and performances. Often, the electromagnetic devices models have to be described not only by analytical formulas, but also by algorithms. This paper describes a new, physically interpretable, fully automatic algorithm for removal of tissue autofluorescence (AF) from fluorescence microscopy images, by non-negative matrix factorization. Measurement of signal intensities from the concentration of certain fluorescent reporter molecules at each location within a sample of biological tissue is confounded by fluorescence produced by the tissue itself (autofluorescence). Spectral mixing models use mixing coefficients to specify how much fluorescence from each source is present and unmixing algorithms separate the two fluorescent sources. Current spectral unmixing methods for AF removal often require a priori knowledge of mixing coefficients. Those which do not, such as principal component analysis, generate negative mixing coefficients that are not physically meaningful. Non-negative matrix factorization constrains mixing coefficients to be non-negative, and has been used for spectral unmixing, but not AF removal. This paper describes a novel non-negative matrix factorization algorithm which separates fluorescent images into true signal and AF components utilizing an estimate of the dark current. We also present a test-bed, based on fluorescent beads, to compare the performance of different AF removal algorithms. Our algorithm out-performed previous state of the art on validation images. Evaluating multistate flow network reliability and reducing system cost are important tasks when planning and designing systems. Existing methods are based on (d, c)-minimal paths ((d, c)-MP), which are vectors, such that d units of flow transmit between two specified nodes with a total cost that does not exceed c. However, these methods only work for directed networks. This correspondence paper finds all (d, c)-MPs before calculating network reliability under budget constraints using a novel method. The proposed algorithm is easier to understand and implement and is superior to existing algorithms. This paper deals with the susceptibility of electronic units to radiated electromagnetic (EM) interference and specifically, it focuses on the parasitic coupling of EM fields with printed circuit board interconnects like microstrip lines. To this purpose, a uniform lossless microstrip line illuminated by an EM plane wave is considered and the voltages at the line terminations are evaluated referring to the Baum–Liu–Tesche equations. This paper presents an online procedure for the automatic search of the maximum-torque-per-ampere operating region for a synchronous reluctance motor. The algorithm is based on a signal-injection method with a random-based perturbation pattern applied to a common direct-torque-controlled drive. Among motor parameters, only the stator resistance is required to perform the automatic procedure. An automated transfer line balancing problem is investigated in this paper. The line produces a complex part at a high volume, such as cylinder heads, and incorporates identical machines that can be operated under different cutting conditions. The selection of cutting conditions significantly influences productivity and the cost of the transfer line. The production of cylinder heads requires machining different operations within a given takt time and satisfying precedence, inclusion, and exclusion relationships. The operations are located on different faces of the cylinder head and are processed by different cutting tools. The line balancing problem is studied to identify the optimal cutting conditions, number of machines and tools, and machining sequence of operations. The objective is to design a balanced transfer line at a minimum machining and tooling cost, and also with minimum nonproductive time. The problem is represented by a goal-programming model and solved for small transfer line configurations through linearization. An improved cuckoo search algorithm via Levy flight is developed to solve large-scale instances. Results of the cuckoo algorithm are promising since it reached optimal and close-to-optimal solutions to small problems and surpassed the results of a random local search approach for instances of medium and large problems. Topic modeling has become a widely used tool for document management. However, there are few topic models distinguishing the importance of documents on different topics. In this paper, we propose a framework LIMTopic to incorporate link based importance into topic modeling. To instantiate the framework, RankTopic and HITSTopic are proposed by incorporating topical pagerank and topical HITS into topic modeling respectively. Specifically, ranking methods are first used to compute the topical importance of documents. Then, a generalized relation is built between link importance and topic modeling. We empirically show that LIMTopic converges after a small number of iterations in most experimental settings. The necessity of incorporating link importance into topic modeling is justified based on KL-Divergences between topic distributions converted from topical link importance and those computed by basic topic models. To investigate the document network summarization performance of topic models, we propose a novel measure called log-likelihood of ranking-integrated document-word matrix. Extensive experimental results show that LIMTopic performs better than baseline models in generalization performance, document clustering and classification, topic interpretability and document network summarization performance. Moreover, RankTopic has comparable performance with relational topic model (RTM) and HITSTopic performs much better than baseline models in document clustering and classification. Rule learning algorithms, for example, Ripper, induces univariate rules, that is, a propositional condition in a rule uses only one feature. In this paper, we propose an omnivariate induction of rules where under each condition, both a univariate and a multivariate condition are trained, and the best is chosen according to a novel statistical test. This paper has three main contributions: First, we propose a novel statistical test, the combined $(5\times 2)$ cv $(t)$ test, to compare two classifiers, which is a variant of the $(5\times 2)$ cv $(t)$ test and give the connections to other tests as $(5\times 2)$ cv $(F)$ test and $(k)$-fold paired $(t)$ test. Second, we propose a multivariate version of Ripper, where support vector machine with linear kernel is used to find multivariate linear conditions. Third, we propose an omnivariate version of Ripper, where the model selection is done via the combined $(5\times 2)$ cv $(t)$ test. Our results indicate that 1) the combined $(5\times 2)$ cv $(t)$ test has higher power (lower type II error), lower type I error, and higher replicability compared to the $(5\times 2)$ cv $(t)$ test, 2) omnivariate rules are better in that they choose whichever condition is more accurate, selecting the right model automatically and separately for each condition in a rule. This paper develops data-driven Type-2 Takagi–Sugeno (T–S) fuzzy modeling and control for bilateral teleoperation with dynamic uncertainties and time-varying delays. The Type-2 T–S fuzzy model identified based on input–output data samples describes the nonlinear teleoperation system by a weighted sum of a group of linear local models, which offers a platform to design robust control algorithms by means of mature linear theories. The fuzzy-model-based four-channel control laws are proposed to guarantee the motion synchronization and enhance the operator's force perception for the environment when the time-varying delays and large dynamic uncertainties, especially the gravity of a heavy end effector of the slave, exist. Markov processes are applied to model the time delays. The stability of the closed-loop system is proved by using the Lyapunov–Krasovskii functions. All the conditions are expressed as linear-matrix inequalities (LMI). By using the MATLAB LMI toolbox, the optimized control gains for each of the fuzzy rules are derived to achieve the optimal performance. Finally, experiments based on an experimental platform consisting of two haptic devices prove the superiority of the proposed strategy through comparison with previous work. This paper develops techniques to design plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) power management algorithms that optimally balance lithium-ion battery pack health and energy consumption cost. As such, this research is the first to utilize electrochemical battery models to optimize the power management in PHEVs. Daily trip length distributions are integrated into the problem using Markov chains with absorbing states. We capture battery aging by integrating two example degradation models: solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) film formation and the “Ah-processed” model. This enables us to optimally tradeoff energy cost versus battery-health. We analyze this tradeoff to explore how optimal control strategies and physical battery system properties are related. Specifically, we find that the slope and convexity properties of the health degradation model profoundly impact the optimal charge depletion strategy. For example, solutions that balance energy cost and SEI layer growth aggressively deplete battery charge at high states-of-charge (SoCs), then blend engine and battery power at lower SoCs. This paper concerns the correction of refracted propagation effects for airborne radar tracking. An algorithm based on the Kalman filter (KF) is developed that compensates for range and elevation refraction errors, which were analytically derived using a simplified tropospheric model. In particular, the refraction error model applies to a spherically stratified troposphere and does not include the effects of azimuthal refraction errors, small-scale fluctuations, or ducting. The effectiveness of the proposed tracking algorithm is assessed in the presence of tropospheric parameter mismatch and measurement noise.
