We report on the development of the first-ever inorganic radiation-hard moisture-insensitive large volume spectroscopic semiconductor-based scintillator with less than 2 ns decay time and light yields as high as 8000 ph/MeV. Despite extensive research into scintillator materials, the quest for an ideal scintillator combining ultrafast decay times (akin to BaF2 and Yb-doped scintillators such as Lu2O3:Yb), high light yields (exceeding 2000 photons per MeV), spectroscopic capabilities, and exceptional radiation hardness remain unfulfilled. In this study, we demonstrate and report for the first time the viability of large-volume (up to 20 mm thickness) gallium oxide (β-Ga2O3) semiconductor-based scintillators for applications requiring these properties. These β-Ga2O3 scintillators were grown using the fast turnaround (∼2 days) crucible-free optical float zone (FZ) technique. The high light yield and ultrafast decay time of these high-purity n-type semiconductors with free carrier concentration of 6 × 1017 cm−3 are attributed to native defects, specifically oxygen vacancies (VO) and gallium–oxygen vacancy pairs (VGa–VO), generated during optimized FZ growth. The ultrafast decay, along with high light yield, enables excellent timing resolution and high count rate detection for applications like time-of-flight positron emission tomography, physics experiments, and nuclear safety. Zinc tungstate is a semiconductor known for its favorable photocatalytic, photoluminescence, and scintillation properties, coupled with its relatively low cost, reduced toxicity, and high stability in biological and catalytic environments. In particular, zinc tungstate evinces scintillation properties, namely the ability to emit visible light upon absorption of energetic radiation such as x rays, which has led to applications not only as radiation detectors but also for biomedical applications involving the delivery of optical light to deep tissue, such as photodynamic therapy and optogenetics. Here, we report on the synthesis of zinc tungstate nanorods generated via an optimized but facile method, which allows for synthetic control over the aspect ratio of the as-synthesized anisotropic motifs via rational variation of the solution pH. We investigate the effect of aspect ratio on their resulting photoluminescent and radioluminescent properties. We further demonstrate the potential of these zinc tungstate nanorods for biomedical applications, such as photodynamic therapy for cancer treatment, by analyzing their toxicological profile within cell lines and neurons. III-nitrides have fomented a revolution in the lighting industry and are poised to make a huge impact in the field of power electronics. In the III-nitride family, the crystal growth and use of hexagonal BN (h-BN) as an ultrawide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductor are much less developed. Bulk crystals of h-BN produced by the high-temperature/high-pressure and the metal flux solution methods possess very high crystalline and optical qualities but are impractical to serve as substrates or for device implementation as their sizes are typically in millimeters. The development of crystal growth technologies for producing thick epitaxial films (or quasi-bulk or semi-bulk crystals) in large wafer sizes with high crystalline quality is a prerequisite for utilizing h-BN as an UWBG electronic material. Compared to traditional III-nitrides, BN has another unique application as solid-state neutron detectors, which however, also require the development of quasi-bulk crystals to provide high detection efficiencies because the theoretical efficiency (ηi) relates to the detector thickness (d) by η i = 1 − e − d λ , where λ denotes the thermal neutron absorption length which is 47 μm (237 μm) for 10B-enriched (natural) h-BN. We provide an overview and recent progress toward the development of h-BN quasi-bulk crystals via hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) growth and the attainment of thermal neutron detectors based on 100 μm thick 10B-enriched h-BN with a record efficiency of 60%. The thermal neutron detection efficiency was shown to enhance at elevated temperatures. Benchmarking the crystalline and optical qualities of h-BN quasi-bulk crystals with the state-of-the-art mm-sized bulk crystal flakes and 0.5 μm thick epitaxial films identified that reducing the density of native defects such as vacancies remains the most critical task for h-BN quasi-bulk crystal growth by HVPE. Dual-energy imaging represents a versatile and evolving technology with wide-ranging applications in medicine and beyond. Recent technological developments increased the potential for improved diagnostic accuracy and expanded imaging capabilities across various fields. The purpose of this work is to design and develop an energy-integrating multilayer detector, known as a sandwich detector, aimed at single-shot dual-energy imaging tasks such as material discrimination and contrast cancellation. The sandwich detector uses two complementary metal oxide semiconductor advanced pixel sensors of 50 μm pixel size. The top and bottom sensors detect low-energy (LE) and high-energy (HE) photons, with sensors coupled with 250 and 600 μm scintillators, respectively. For better spectral separation between layers without excessively affecting the detected statistic in the bottom layer, the insertion of a 0.25-mm Cu filter between the layers was found to be the optimal choice, from among the tested 0-, 0.25-, and 0.5-mm filter options. The thickness selection for scintillator and intermediate Cu filter was carried out through a dual-energy simulation model. The experiments confirmed the model's reliability in selecting the optimal thicknesses of the intermediate Cu filter, thereby providing reassurance also on the choice of the top scintillator. A series of (Gd, Y, Yb, Tb, Ce)3Al2Ga3O12 compositionally disordered compounds with a garnet structure were prepared in the form of ceramics by sintering in oxygen at 1650 °C for 2 h and studied for the luminescent properties and interaction of ions entering the matrix host. The luminescence features of Ce3+ ions were found to be strongly dependent on the Yb concentration. Photoluminescence and scintillation kinetics are characterized by subnanosecond kinetics when the Yb index in the compound exceeds X = 0.3. It opens an opportunity to create an extremely fast and dense scintillation material emitting in a visible range. A further decrease in the Yb index in the compound leads to an increase in the intensity of Yb3+ infrared (IR) emission, whereas Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions contribute to the luminosity of the material by overlapping intra- and intereconfiguration luminescence bands in the spectral range of 300–700 nm. This finding opens an opportunity to create converter materials tolerant to the corpuscular radiation of isotope sources, providing a high efficiency of electric current production when coupled with a silicon photovoltaic element. Cd2+ cation doped CsPbCl3 single crystals were synthesized, and their luminescent properties were investigated under excitation with synchrotron radiation quanta with energy greater than Eg and at a sample temperature of 12 K. Pure single crystals exhibit a narrow band of exciton emission at 416.7 nm. Doping the single crystals leads to a high-energy shift of the excitonic luminescence, the appearance of new luminescent bands, the broadening of the luminescent bands, an increase in the decay time constants, and a significant enhancement of the luminescence intensity. The observed changes in luminescent parameters upon doping are discussed in terms of the crystal structure ordering, a decrease in the number of defects responsible for capturing charge carriers at the stage of electronic excitation thermalization, and a decrease in defects that quench excitonic luminescence. Doped single crystals with decay times of the order of 0.4 ns and intensities that significantly exceed the intensity of pure single crystals can be promising scintillation materials for positron emission tomography in the time-of-flight mode. A new one-dimensional hybrid [APCHA]Cu2I4 was designed and applied as an X-ray scintillator. It exhibits broad-band green emission with a high PLQY of 74.80% and excellent stability. It demonstrates radioluminescence property with a light yield of 28 336 photons MeV−1, detection limit of 41 nGyair s−1, and high spatial limit of 13.95 lp mm−1 in X-ray imaging. In time-of-flight positron emission tomography (TOF-PET), a coincidence time resolution (CTR) below 100 ps reduces the angular coverage requirements and, thus, the geometric constraints of the scanner design. Among other possibilities, this opens the possibility of using flat-panel PET detectors. Such a design would be more cost-accessible and compact and allow for a higher degree of modularity than a conventional ring scanner. However, achieving adequate CTR is a considerable challenge and requires improvements at every level of detection. Based on recent results in the ongoing development of optimised TOF-PET photodetectors and electronics, we expect that within a few years, a CTR of about 75 ps will be be achievable at the system level. In this work, flat-panel scanners with four panels and various design parameters were simulated, assessed and compared to a reference scanner based on the Siemens Biograph Vision using NEMA NU 2-2018 metrics. Point sources were also simulated, and a method for evaluating spatial resolution that is more appropriate for flat-panel geometry is presented. We also studied the effects of crystal readout strategies, comparing single-crystal and module readout levels. The results demonstrate that with a CTR below 100 ps, a flat-panel scanner can achieve image quality comparable to that of a reference clinical scanner, with considerable savings in scintillator material. Ultra‐high‐speed synchrotron‐based hard X‐ray (i.e. above 10 keV) imaging is gaining a growing interest in a number of scientific domains for tracking non‐repeatable dynamic phenomena at spatio‐temporal microscales. This work describes an optimized indirect X‐ray imaging microscope designed to achieve high performance at micrometre pixel size and megahertz acquisition speed. The entire detector optical arrangement has an improved sensitivity within the near‐ultraviolet (NUV) part of the emitted spectrum (i.e. 310–430 nm wavelength). When combined with a single‐crystal fast‐decay scintillator, such as LYSO:Ce (Lu2−xYxSiO5:Ce), it exploits the potential of the NUV light‐emitting scintillators. The indirect arrangement of the detector makes it suitable for high‐dose applications that require high‐energy illumination. This allows for synchrotron single‐bunch hard X‐ray imaging to be performed with improved true spatial resolution, as herein exemplified through pulsed wire explosion and superheated near‐nozzle gasoline injection experiments at a pixel size of 3.2 µm, acquisition rates up to 1.4 MHz and effective exposure time down to 60 ps. Plasmonic rulers (PRs) linking nanoscale distance dependence spectral shifts are important for studying cellular microenvironments and biomarker detection. The traditional PR design employs tethering metal nanoparticle pairs using synthetic and biopolymers that severely suffer from reproducibility issues, as well as lack reversibility. Here, the fabrication of novel PRs is reported through the formation of self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) of photoswitchable molecular machines chemically tethered onto sharp‐tip gold nanostructures (Au NSs). This unique and highly sensitive PR utilizes localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties of Au NSs to spectroscopically evaluate dipole–dipole coupling between NSs and photoisomerizable spiropyran (SP)‐merocyanine (MC) conjugates in the solid‐state. It is observed that the SAM‐modified NSs are extremely sensitive to the photoisomerization of SP‐to‐MC, resulting in LSPR shifts as large as 5.6 nm for every 1.0 Å change in distance. The highly dipolar MC changes the NS‐SAM interfacial polarizability and alters the dipole–dipole coupling leading to the ultrasensitive PR is hypothesized. The hypothesis is supported theoretically by calculating dipole polarizability of an inorganic‐organic heterodimer model and experimentally by determining work function and interfacial dipole values. Taken together, this work represents the fabrication of next‐generation PRs, which hold great promise for advanced, plasmonic‐based sensors and optoelectronic device fabrication. Objective: Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a well-known imaging technology for the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of several diseases. Most PET scanners use a Ring-Shaped Detector Configuration (RSDC), which helps obtain homogeneous image quality but are restricted to an invariable Field-of-View (FOV), scarce spatial resolution, and low sensitivity. Alternatively, few PET systems use Open Detector Configurations (ODC) to permit an accessible FOV adaptable to different target sizes, thus optimizing sensitivity. Yet, to compensate the lack of angular coverage in ODC-PET, developing a detector with high-timing performance is mandatory to enable Time-of-Flight (TOF) techniques during reconstruction. The main goal of this work is to provide a proof of concept PET scanner appropriate for constructing the new generation of ODC-PET suitable for biopsy guidance and clinical intervention during acquisition. The designed detector has to be compact and robust, and its requirements in terms of performance are spatial and time resolutions < 2 mm and < 200 ps, respectively. Methods: The present work includes a simulation study of an ODC-PET based on 2-panels with variable distance. The image quality (IQ) and Derenzo phantoms have been simulated and evaluated. The phantom simulations have also been performed using a ring-shaped PET for comparison purposes of the ODC approach with conventional systems. Then, an experimental evaluation of a prototype detector that has been designed following the simulation results is presented. This study focused on tuning the ASIC parameters and evaluating the scintillator surface treatment (ESR and TiO2), and configuration that yields the best Coincidence Time Resolution (CTR). Moreover, the scalability of the prototype to a module of 64 × 64mm2 and its preliminary evaluation regarding pixel identification are provided. Results: The simulation results reported sensitivity (%) values at the center of the FOV of 1.96, 1.63, and 1.18 for panel distances of 200, 250, and 300 mm, respectively. The IQ reconstructed image reported good uniformity (87%) and optimal CRC values, and the Derenzo phantom reconstruction suggests a system resolution of 1.6–2 mm. The experimental results demonstrate that using TiO2 coating yielded better detector performance than ESR. Acquired data was filtered by applying an energy window of ± 30% at the photopeak level. After filtering, best CTR of 230 ± 2 ps was achieved for an 8 × 8 LYSO pixel block with 2 × 2 × 12mm3 each. The detector performance remained constant after scaling-up the prototype to a module of 64 × 64mm2, and the flood map demonstrates the module's capabilities to distinguish the small pixels; thus, a spatial resolution < 2 mm (pixel size) is achieved. Conclusions: The simulated results of this biplanar scanner show high performance in terms of image quality and sensitivity. These results are comparable to state-of-the-art PET technology and, demonstrate that including TOF information minimizes the image artifacts due to the lack of angular projections. The experimental results concluded that using TiO2 coating provide the best performance. In this study, we propose novel three-layer composite scintillators designed for the simultaneous detection of different ionizing radiation components. These scintillators are based on epitaxial structures of LuAG and YAG garnets, doped with Ce3+ and Sc3+ ions. Samples of these composite scintillators, containing YAG:Ce and LuAG:Ce single crystalline films with different thicknesses and LuAG:Sc single crystal substrates, were grown using the liquid phase epitaxy method from melt solutions based on PbO-B2O3 fluxes. The scintillation properties of the proposed composites, YAG:Ce film/LuAG:Sc film/LuAG:Ce crystal and YAG:Ce film/LuAG:Ce film/LuAG:Sc crystal, were investigated under excitation by radiation with α-particles from a 239Pu source, β-particles from 90Sr sources and γ-rays from a 137Cs source. Considering the properties of the mentioned composite scintillators, special attention was paid to the ability of simultaneous separation of the different components of mixed ionizing radiation containing the mentioned particles and quanta using scintillation decay kinetics. The differences in scintillation decay curves under α- and β-particle and γ-ray excitations were characterized using figure of merit (FOM) values at various scintillation decay intensity levels (1/e, 0.1, 0.05, 0.01). Organic thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) scintillators hold promising potential for applications in medical radiography and security detection, but the poor X‐ray absorption ability and inferior radioluminescence (RL) hampered their progression. Herein, the study has pioneered the development of high‐performance TADF Ag(I)‐based scintillators from M2X2(dppb)2 (M = Ag, Cu; X = Cl, Br, I) complexes with 1,2‐Bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene (dppb) ligand. In comparison with Cu(I) complexes, the Ag(I) series generally exhibited superior scintillation performance. Notably, Ag2Cl2(dppb)2 (Ag1) stands out with exceptionally high RL intensity (≈125% higher than that of CsI:Tl) and a low detection limit of 59.8 nGy s−1. The outstanding scintillation performance of Ag1 is primarily attributed to the synergistic effect of the high exciton utilization efficiency origin from a small singlet‐triplet energy gap, enhanced X‐ray absorption capacity by heavy atoms, and the high photoluminescence quantum yield (76.47% in ambient atmosphere). By fabricating a flexible film constructed with Ag1 submicron crystalline powders, a high spatial resolution of 25.0 lp mm−1 for X‐ray imaging is obtained. Objective. Develop a prototype on-line positron emission tomography (PET) scanner and evaluate its capability of on-line imaging and intra-fractionated proton-induced radioactivity range measurement. Approach. Each detector consists of 32 × 32 array of 2 × 2 × 30 mm3 Lutetium–Yttrium Oxyorthosilicate scintillators with single-scintillator-end readout through a 20 × 20 array of 3 × 3 mm2 Silicon Photomultipliers. The PET can be configurated with a full-ring of 20 detectors for conventional PET imaging or a partial-ring of 18 detectors for on-line imaging and range measurement. All detector-level readout and processing electronics are attached to the backside of the system gantry and their output signals are transferred to a field-programable-gate-array based system electronics and data acquisition that can be placed 2 m away from the gantry. The PET imaging performance and radioactivity range measurement capability were evaluated by both the offline study that placed a radioactive source with known intensity and distribution within a phantom and the online study that irradiated a phantom with proton beams under different radiation and imaging conditions. Main results. The PET has 32 cm diameter and 6.5 cm axial length field-of-view (FOV), ∼2.3–5.0 mm spatial resolution within FOV, 3% sensitivity at the FOV center, 18%–30% energy resolution, and ∼9 ns coincidence time resolution. The offline study shows the PET can determine the shift of distal falloff edge position of a known radioactivity distribution with the accuracy of 0.3 ± 0.3 mm even without attenuation and scatter corrections, and online study shows the PET can measure the shift of proton-induced positron radioactive range with the accuracy of 0.6 ± 0.3 mm from the data acquired with a short-acquisition (60 s) and low-dose (5 MU) proton radiation to a human head phantom. This study demonstrated the capability of intra-fractionated PET imaging and radioactivity range measurement and will enable the investigation on the feasibility of intra-fractionated, range-shift compensated adaptive proton therapy. Pb‐free double‐perovskite (DP) scintillators are highly promising candidates for X‐ray imaging because of their superior optoelectronic properties, low toxicity, and high stability. However, practical applications require Pb‐free DP crystals to be ground and mixed with polymers to produce scintillator films. Grinding can compromise film uniformity and optical properties, thereby affecting imaging resolution. In this study, an in situ fabrication strategy is proposed to facilitate the crystalline growth of Pb‐free Cs2AgInxBi1‐xCl6 micron sheets in polymethyl methacrylate in a single step. By adjusting the In3+/Bi3+ ratio, Cs2AgIn0.9Bi0.1Cl6/PMMA composite films (CFs) with excellent scintillation properties are obtained, including a light yield of up to 32000 photons per MeV and an X‐ray detection limit of 87 nGyairs−1. This strategy also enabled the production of large Cs2AgIn0.9Bi0.1Cl6/PMMA CFs, which demonstrated favorable flexibility and stability, fabricating products with advanced eligibility for commercial applications. The CFs exhibited outstanding performances in X‐ray imaging, producing high‐resolution structures and providing a new avenue for the development of Pb‐free DP materials in fields such as medical imaging and safety detection. The aim of this study was to experimentally assess the luminescence efficiency of a cerium fluoride (CeF3) inorganic scintillator in crystal form as a possible alternative to high-luminescence but hygroscopic cerium bromide (CeBr3). The experiments were performed under typical diagnostic radiology X-rays (50–140 kVp). Parameters such as the crystal's absolute luminescence efficiency (AE) and the spectral matching with a series of optical detectors were examined. The replacement of bromine with fluorine appeared to drastically reduce the AE of CeF3 compared to CeBr3 and other commercially available inorganic scintillators such as bismuth germanate (Bi4Ge3O12-BGO). CeF3 reaches a maximum luminescence efficiency value of only 0.8334 efficiency units (EUs) at 140 kVp, whereas the corresponding values for CeBr3 and BGO were 29.49 and 3.41, respectively. Furthermore, the emission maximum (at around 313 nm) moved towards the lower part of the visible spectrum, making CeF3 suitable for spectral coupling with various photocathodes and photomultipliers applied in nuclear medicine detectors, but completely unsuitable for spectral matching with CCDs and CMOS. The obtained luminescence efficiency results denote that CeF3 cannot be applied in medical imaging applications covering the range 50–140 kVp; however, examination of its luminescence output in the nuclear medicine energy range (~70 to 511 keV) could reveal possible applicability in these modalities. High-energy radiation detection and imaging technology has significant applications in high-energy physics research, medical imaging, and industrial monitoring. Lead-free metal halides exhibit exceptional potential for conducting indirect detection of high-energy radiation due to their characteristics of low toxicity, strong stability, high light yield, and large Stokes shift. This paper reviews the most recent advances in lead-free metal halide scintillator materials for X-ray imaging. Subsequently, it lists the most important parameters of scintillator performance and introduces the production procedures for single crystal, powder, and nanocrystal scintillators. Furthermore, it discusses the manufacturing of scintillator films with improved performance, focusing on large-area flexible scintillator films and the coupling with microstructures. The prevalent use of unsustainable polymers in current X‐ray scintillators poses a significant environmental concern. The advancement of biodegradable X‐ray scintillators holds promise in mitigating escalating environmental issues tied to electronic or medical waste and carbon footprints. Herein, a biodegradable and flexible X‐ray scintillation film is presented employing lead‐free 0D Cs3Cu2I5 perovskite nanoparticles integrated into densified‐delignified wood (Cs3Cu2I5@D‐Wood). The Cs3Cu2I5@D‐Wood film demonstrates precise and detailed X‐ray imaging capabilities, achieving a high spatial resolution of 10 line pairs per millimeter (lp·mm−1). To minimize the environmental impact associated with disposal, metal and halide ions (e.g., Cs+, Cu+, I−) from Cs3Cu2I5@D‐Wood can be easily retrieved by a simple solvent extraction process. The approach showcases the potential of biodegradable wood‐based X‐ray scintillation screens as alternatives to conventional, plastic‐based screens. Protons from the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center have been used for pulsed radiography in dynamic experiments for the past 25 years. Pulses of protons are imaged on a scintillator, and the light from these images is captured by fast gated cameras. The need for fast, bright scintillators has led to some compromises in image quality due to tiling the scintillators and backgrounds with totally internally reflected light. Gallium oxide is a newly emerged ultrawide bandgap (4.9 eV) semiconductor that is suitable as a combined electronics and radiation detection platform. We have experimentally demonstrated fast neutron and gamma-ray scintillation from Czochralski-grown β-Ga2O3 in a recent series (October 2023) of experiments at the unmoderated pulsed neutron spallation source located at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. Using the neutron time-of-flight (TOF) technique and a fast-gated intensified CCD camera, we observed energy-dependent neutron scintillation for neutron energies ranging from 1 to 400 MeV, including the 14.1 MeV neutron energy relevant to D–T fusion. Neutron flux is quantified and calibrated by cascading the scintillator after the fission chamber, enabling a detailed analysis of temporal and energy-dependent characteristics of the scintillation events. A pronounced scintillation signal from the spallation gamma flash with a temporal full width of half maximum of ∼4 ns is indicative of the material's rapid response. Neutron energy dependent scintillation is observed using the TOF method at a 22.6-m distance from the neutron source. These results highlight the possibility of developing a Ga2O3 based fusion neutron diagnostic platform integrated with both scintillation and electronics functions on the integrated chip scale. A novel Imaging Neutral Particle Analyzer (INPA) was newly installed in early 2024 to enhance the understanding of fast ion confinement on Large Helical Devices (LHDs). This diagnostic system, based on a magnetic spectrometer using a scintillator, provides energy-resolved radial profiles of confined fast ions by measuring charge-exchanged fast neutrals escaping from the plasma. The system utilizes a 100 nm thick carbon foil to ionize the fast neutrals, subsequently deflecting the ions toward a scintillator via the existing local magnetic field. The fast ion energy and sightline determine the position of the scintillation, while the light intensity depends on the flux of the fast ions. The INPA features two apertures, facilitating effective measurements in both clockwise and counterclockwise magnetic field directions in the LHD. This INPA was designed as a passive measurement system that measures fast ions charge exchange with background neutrals, focusing on perpendicular beam ions from 5 to 100 keV with an energy resolution of about 5.75 keV. This paper describes the details of the design, installation, and the initial results of the INPA on the LHD. Several small to medium-scale magnetic confinement fusion devices operate using deuterium as fuel. These low neutron rate (108–1010 n/s) devices rely on 2.45 MeV neutron measurements to validate physical models and to assess their performance. Given the modest rate, neutron monitors have to be placed as close as possible to the machine to maximize data gathering. In these regions, intense stray magnetic fields could affect the detector's performance. In this work, the development of a neutron detector based on an EJ-276D scintillator crystal coupled with a SiPM and a custom-made readout system is presented. A new 14 MeV neutron spectrometer utilizing the magnetic proton recoil (MPR) technique is under development for the SPARC tokamak. This instrument measures neutrons by converting them into protons, whose momenta are subsequently analyzed using a series of magnets before detection by an array of scintillators known as the hodoscope. In this work, we explore various solutions for the hodoscope detectors through laboratory tests with radioactive sources and simulations. We present findings on light collection and pulse shape discrimination based on detector types, as well as optimal solutions for photo-detectors studying the differences between SiPM and PMT. Our results also led to the determination of a better optimized design for the hodoscope detectors, consisting of a 0.7 cm width and a 13 cm length EJ276D scintillation rod. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A COmpact Spectrometer for Measurements Of Neutrons at the ASDEX Upgrade Tokamak (COSMONAUT) has been developed for spectroscopy measurements of the 2.45 MeV neutron emission from deuterium plasmas at the ASDEX Upgrade. The instrument is based on a CLYC-7 inorganic scintillator, whereby the detection of fusion neutrons occurs via their interaction with 35Cl nuclei in the detector crystal, leading to a peak in the detector response function and providing excellent neutron/gamma-ray discrimination capabilities. The diagnostics is installed along a radial line of sight and makes use of a digital system to record time resolved data for the whole duration of the discharge. Measurements in ASDEX Upgrade plasmas with neutral beam injection have been carried out and are successfully interpreted using state-of-the-art modeling codes. Next step applications of the diagnostics are in experiments aimed at generating energetic particles by ion cyclotron resonance heating schemes. In these scenarios, COSMONAUT will provide unique information on the acceleration of deuterons beyond the beam injection energy and on their confinement, for comparison with modeling. Neutron diffraction beamlines have traditionally relied on deploying large detector arrays of 3He tubes or neutron‐sensitive scintillators coupled with photomultipliers to efficiently probe crystallographic and microstructure information of a given material. Given the large upfront cost of custom‐made data acquisition systems and the recent scarcity of 3He, new diffraction beamlines or upgrades to existing ones demand innovative approaches. This paper introduces a novel Timepix3‐based event‐mode imaging neutron diffraction detector system as well as first results of a silicon powder diffraction measurement made at the HIPPO neutron powder diffractometer at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. Notably, these initial measurements were conducted simultaneously with the 3He array on HIPPO, enabling direct comparison. Data reduction for this type of data was implemented in the MAUD code, enabling Rietveld analysis. Results from the Timepix3‐based setup and HIPPO were benchmarked against McStas simulations, showing good agreement for peak resolution. With further development, systems such as the one presented here may substantially reduce the cost of detector systems for new neutron instrumentation as well as for upgrades of existing beamlines. Neutrons are widely used in national defense, security, and medical health fields. It is critical to realize neutron detection with high efficiency. The most popular neutron detection scintillators such as lithium glass and 6LiF/ZnS:Ag screen exhibit insurmountable limitations: the former usually has relatively rather low light yield and latter is opaque. In this research, we report the successful construction of the novel full inorganic composite scintillators by low temperature co‐firing technology. The composite scintillator is derived from the ZnS:Ag and borate glass matrix, and it shows better transparency compared with the standard 6LiF/ZnS:Ag screen. It exhibits excellent scintillation properties with the X‐ray induced emission intensity of these composite scintillators reaching approximately 2.46 times of the standard Bi4Ge3O12 (BGO) crystal. The light output under thermal neutron excitation can reach 75 000 photons/neutron. In addition, it presents excellent neutron detection performance with natural abundance of 10B isotope. Our research findings can serve as a valuable reference for the advancement of robust neutron detection materials, particularly in the domain of ZnS:Ag‐based full inorganic scintillator for neutron detection. Dense and transparent ceramic samples of a (Gd,Y)3Al2Ga3O12:Ce scintillator were obtained by using stereolithography-based Digital Light Processing (DLP) 3D printing for compacting, subsequent burnout, and pressureless sintering. The effects of stoichiometric deviations and green body compaction methods (uniaxial pressing versus DLP 3D printing) on the optical, luminescent, and scintillation properties of ceramics were analyzed. An excess of Y and Gd in the composition led to an increase in transmittance and to the acceleration of the scintillation kinetics. Moreover, transparent ceramics made of 3D-printed green bodies were found to be superior in light yield to the samples, which were prepared from the same powders and densified by uniaxial pressing. Inverse beta decay (IBD) in plastic scintillators is one of the most commonly used methods for detecting reactor antineutrinos. Cosmic muon signals due to the IBD compared to those generated by antineutrinos are still the main challenge in these types of detectors. The IRAND (IRan ANtineutrino Detector) is currently being designed and implemented with the constraint of reducing the required hardware, and at the same time, improving the antineutrino detection efficiency. Imbalanced classification is one of the software methods in machine learning that deals with imbalanced data, such as muon and antineutrino. Using the IRAND-Sim simulation package based on the Geant4 toolkit presented in our previous research, the spectra and angular distribution of antineutrinos and muons can be calculated. However, in this study, the memory management techniques to handle the dataset due to a large number of muons have been used, and also two separate methods have been used in the imbalanced classification for discriminating muon and antineutrino events. The results show that this approach by combining real and simulated data is very efficient, and the imbalanced nature can be reduced to achieve better classifier performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: While careful planning and pre‐treatment checks are performed to ensure patient safety during external beam radiation therapy (EBRT), inevitable daily variations mean that in vivo dosimetry (IVD) is the only way to attain the true delivered dose. Several countries outside the US require daily IVD for quality assurance. However, elsewhere, the manual labor and time considerations of traditional in vivo dosimeters may be preventing frequent use of IVD in the clinic. Purpose: This study expands upon previous research using plastic scintillator discs for optical dosimetry for electron therapy treatments. We present the characterization of scintillator discs for in vivo x‐ray dosimetry and describe additional considerations due to geometric complexities. Methods: Plastic scintillator discs were coated with reflective white paint on all sides but the front surface. An anti‐reflective, matte coating was applied to the transparent face to minimize specular reflection. A time‐gated iCMOS camera imaged the discs under various irradiation conditions. In post‐processing, background‐subtracted images of the scintillators were fit with Gaussian‐convolved ellipses to extract several parameters, including integral output, and observation angle. Results: Dose linearity and x‐ray energy independence were observed, consistent with ideal characteristics for a dosimeter. Dose measurements exhibited less than 5% variation for incident beam angles between 0° and 75° at the anterior surface and 0–60∘$^\circ $ at the posterior surface for exit beam dosimetry. Varying the angle between the disc surface and the camera lens did not impact the integral output for the same dose up to 55°. Past this point, up to 75°, there is a sharp falloff in response; however, a correction can be used based on the detected width of the disc. The reproducibility of the integral output for a single disc is 2%, and combined with variations from the gantry angle, we report the accuracy of the proposed scintillator disc dosimeters as ±5.4%. Conclusions: Plastic scintillator discs have characteristics that are well‐suited for in vivo optical dosimetry for x‐ray radiotherapy treatments. Unlike typical point dosimeters, there is no inherent readout time delay, and an optical recording of the measurement is saved after treatment for future reference. Purpose: This study investigated the potential of a commercially available plastic scintillator, the Exradin W2, as a real‐time dosimeter for ultra‐high‐dose‐rate (UHDR) electron beams. This work aimed to characterize this system's performance under UHDR conditions and addressed limitations inherent to other conventional dosimetry systems. Methods and materials: We assessed the W2's performance as a UHDR electron dosimeter using a 16 MeV UHDR electron beam from the FLASH research extension (FLEX) system. Additionally, the vendor provided a beta firmware upgrade to better handle the processing of the high signal generated in the UHDR environment. We evaluated the W2 regarding dose‐per‐pulse, pulse repetition rate, charge versus distance, and pulse linearity. Absorbed dose measurements were compared against those from a plane‐parallel ionization chamber, optically stimulated luminescent dosimeters and radiochromic film. Results: We observed that the 1 × 1 mm W2 scintillator with the MAX SD was more suitable for UHDR dosimetry compared to the 1 × 3 mm W2 scintillator, capable of matching film measurements within 2% accuracy for dose‐per‐pulse up to 3.6 Gy/pulse. The W2 accurately ascertained the inverse square relationship regarding charge versus virtual source distance with R2 of ∼1.00 for all channels. Pulse linearity was accurately measured with the W2, demonstrating a proportional response to the delivered pulse number. There was no discernible impact on the measured charge of the W2 when switching between the available repetition rates of the FLEX system (18–180 pulses/s), solidifying consistent beam output across pulse frequencies. Conclusions: This study tested a commercial plastic scintillator detector in a UHDR electron beam, paving the way for its potential use as a real‐time, patient‐specific dosimetry tool for future FLASH radiotherapy treatments. Further research is warranted to test and improve the signal processing of the W2 dosimetry system to accurately measure in UHDR environments using exceedingly high dose‐per‐pulse and pulse numbers. The development of all‐inorganic lead‐free Cs3Cu2I5 perovskite materials has garnered significant attention due to their non‐toxic nature and unique optoelectronic properties, particularly in the field of X‐ray detection. However, the stability of perovskites remains a major concern for their optical applications. In this study, a highly stable Cs3Cu2I5‐in‐glass composite (Cs3Cu2I5@Borosilicate) is fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS), a rapid and low‐temperature sintering process. The Cs3Cu2I5@Borosilicate composite exhibits strong photoluminescence even after prolonged immersion in various polar solvents, whereas Cs3Cu2I5 perovskite loses its photoluminescence within seconds. Moreover, the Cs3Cu2I5@Borosilicate composite demonstrates robust radio‐luminescence under X‐ray irradiation, and its potential as a scintillator material is validated through prototype X‐ray imaging with a high spatial resolution (≈7 lp mm−1). This innovative composite material holds immense potential for scintillation applications and represents a promising approach for encapsulating perovskites in a transparent amorphous medium. The ability to distinguish multiple forms of plutonium from one another, such as oxide and metal, is paramount in areas of nuclear nonproliferation and international safeguards. In its metal form, plutonium can be readily used in a nuclear weapon, while oxide forms are associated with nuclear reactor fuel. Oxide-based plutonium forms emit neutrons with an energy spectrum that is significantly different from the fission neutrons that are emitted from plutonium metal. Organic scintillation detectors output pulses that are proportional to the neutron energy deposited, and therefore present a means of distinguishing these plutonium forms based on their energy spectra. In this work, metal and oxide forms of plutonium were measured using a handheld detection system based on an organic glass scintillator. Monte Carlo modeling of these experiments was performed to provide insight into the origin of the features in the observed light output spectra. Through analysis of multiple regions of these spectra, in a matter of minutes we were able to unambiguously discriminate oxide and metal plutonium forms from one another and from a plutonium-beryllium neutron source, which was considered for comparison because these sources are commonly used in industrial applications. Background: The application of semi-conductor detectors such as cadmium–zinc–telluride (CZT) in nuclear medicine improves extrinsic energy resolution and count sensitivity due to the direct conversion of gamma photons into electric signals. A 3D-ring pixelated CZT system named StarGuide was recently developed and implemented by GE HealthCare for SPECT acquisition. The system consists of 12 detector columns with seven modules of 16 × 16 CZT pixelated crystals, each with an integrated parallel-hole tungsten collimator. The axial coverage is 27.5 cm. The detector thickness is 7.25 mm, which allows acquisitions in the energy range [40–279] keV. Since there is currently no performance characterization specific to 3D-ring CZT SPECT systems, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) NU 1-2018 clinical standard can be tailored to these cameras. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the SPECT/CT StarGuide system according to the NEMA NU 1-2018 clinical standard specifically adapted to characterize the new 3D-ring CZT. Results: Due to the integrated collimator, the system geometry and the pixelated nature of the detector, some NEMA tests have been adapted to the features of the system. The extrinsic measured energy resolution was about 5–6% for the tested isotopes (99mTc, 123I and 57Co); the maximum count rate was 760 kcps and the observed count rate at 20% loss was 917 kcps. The system spatial resolution in air extrapolated at 10 cm with 99mTc was 7.2 mm, while the SPECT spatial resolutions with scatter were 4.2, 3.7 and 3.6 mm in a central, radial and tangential direction respectively. Single head sensitivity value for 99mTc was 97 cps/MBq; with 12 detector columns, the system volumetric sensitivity reached 520 kcps MBq−1 cc−1. Conclusions: The performance tests of the StarGuide can be performed according to the NEMA NU 1-2018 standard with some adaptations. The system has shown promising results, particularly in terms of energy resolution, spatial resolution and volumetric sensitivity, potentially leading to higher quality clinical images. Rare earth ions with d-f transitions (Ce3+, Eu2+) have emerged as promising candidates for electroluminescence applications due to their abundant emission spectra, high light conversion efficiency, and excellent stability. However, directly injecting charge into 4f orbitals remains a significant challenge, resulting in unsatisfied external quantum efficiency and high operating voltage in rare earth light-emitting diodes. Herein, we propose a scheme to solve the difficulty by utilizing the energy transfer process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transient absorption spectra suggest that the Cs3CeI6 luminescence process is primarily driven by the energy transfer from the I2-based self-trapped exciton to the Ce-based Frenkel exciton. Furthermore, energy transfer efficiency is largely improved by enhancing the spectra overlap between the self-trapped exciton emission and the Ce-based Frenkel exciton excitation. When implemented as an active layer in light-emitting diodes, they show the maximum brightness and external quantum efficiency of 1073 cd m−2 and 7.9%, respectively. Rare-earth metal halide perovskites are promising for deep blue LEDs. Here, Yang et al. report energy transfer between self-trapped exciton and Frenkel exciton in Cs3CeI6 by adding excess CsI during thermal evaporation, resulting in deep blue LEDs with external quantum efficiency of 7.9% at 424 nm. Lanthanide nanoparticle (LnNP) scintillators exhibit huge potential in achieving radionuclide‐activated luminescence (radioluminescence, RL). However, their structure–activity relationship remains largely unexplored. Herein, progressive optimization of LnNP scintillators is presented to unveil their structure‐dependent RL property and enhance their RL output efficiency. Benefiting from the favorable host matrix and the luminescence‐protective effect of core–shell engineering, NaGdF4 : 15 %Eu@NaLuF4 nanoparticle scintillators with tailored structures emerged as the top candidates. Living imaging experiments based on optimal LnNP scintillators validated the feasibility of laser‐free continuous RL activated by clinical radiopharmaceuticals for tumor multiplex visualization. This research provides unprecedented insights into the rational design of LnNP scintillators, which would enable efficient energy conversion from Cerenkov luminescence, γ‐radiation, and β‐electrons into visible photon signals, thus establishing a robust nanotechnology‐aided approach for tumor‐directed radio‐phototheranostics. Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are solid-state single-photon-sensitive detectors that show excellent performance in a wide range of applications. In FBK (Trento, Italy), we developed a position-sensitive SiPM technology, called "linearly graded" (LG-SiPM), which is based on an avalanche-current weighted-partitioning approach. It shows position reconstruction resolution below 250 μm on an 8 × 8 mm2 device area with four readout channels and minimal distortions. A recent development in terms of LG-SIPM is a larger chip version (10 × 10 mm2) based on FBK NUV-HD technology (near-ultraviolet sensitive), with a peak photon detection efficiency at 420 nm. Such a large-area detector with position sensitivity is very interesting in applications like MR-compatible PET, high-energy physics experiments, and readout of time-projection chambers, gamma and beta cameras, or scintillating fibers, with a reduced number of channels. These SiPMs were characterized in terms of noise, photon detection efficiency, and position resolution. We also developed tiles of 2 × 2 and 3 × 3 LG-SiPMs, reaching very large sensitive areas of 20 × 20 mm2 and 30 × 30 mm2. We implemented a "smart-channel" configuration, which allowed us to have just six output channels for the 2 × 2 elements and eight channels for the 3 × 3 element tiles, preserving a position resolution below 0.5 mm. These kinds of detectors provide a great advantage in compact and low-power applications by maintaining position sensitivity over large areas with a small number of channels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the photon (PL), electron (CL) and X-ray (XEL) induced luminescence characteristics of high aspect ratio ultra-long (~ 50 µm) ZnO nanorods (NRs) and discuss the potential for fast X-ray detection based on the consistent and efficient visible emission (~ 580 nm) from ZnO NRs. Nanostructured ZnO scintillators were rearranged to form a vertically well-aligned NR design in order to help light absorption and coupling resulting in luminescent and fast scintillation properties. The design of the nanorod array combines the key advantages of a low-cost growth technique together with environmentally friendly and widely available materials. A low temperature hydrothermal method was adopted to grow ZnO NRs in one cycle growth and their structural, optical and X-ray scintillation properties were investigated. The relatively short (~ 10 µm) ZnO NRs emitting in the near-band-edge region were found to be almost insensitive to X-rays. On the other hand, the higher XEL response of long ZnO NRs, which is a key parameter for evaluation of materials to be used as scintillators for high quality X-ray detection and imaging, along with a decay time response in the order of ns confirmed promising scintillation properties for fast and high-resolution X-ray detector applications. Bound states in the continuum (BIC) have attracted a great deal of attention in all-dielectric nanophotonics due to their ability to provide spectral features with a very high-quality factor. By definition, BIC cannot be observed in the far field because of the symmetry mismatch with the modes propagating in free space. Despite this, in systems with slightly reduced symmetry, the condition for BIC is lifted, which gives rise to the high-quality resonant features in their optical response. In particular, in photonic crystal slabs, which support the BIC states, the symmetry reduction allows modification of light propagation, reflection, or emission. In this work, using the photonic crystal slabs with embedded Ge nanoislands, we have shown the ability to control their light emission features by symmetry breaking. It was demonstrated that such symmetry breaking due to a change in the basis vectors of the photonic crystal unit cell or a change in the unit cell internal structure could provide independent control knobs to alter the spectral position of photonic crystal modes, their dispersion, and degeneracy. To simulate cracks, a series of slits with depths ranging from 17.2% to 40% of 301 stainless steel (SS) plate thickness are fabricated for this study. The examination includes a microfocus X-ray tube and a digital detector array (DDA) with 75 μm pixel pitch. The basis of this study is to determine the effect of detector scintillator blur, noise and pixelation on the contrast of the resultant radiographic image and, ultimately, on the detectability of a crack. Many crack detectability studies are performed on notched plates rather than true cracks. As the notch width becomes smaller than a pixel, the grey value of the image it generates will be averaged over the entire footprint of the pixel. Therefore, the contrast with neighbouring (no notch) pixels is reduced. This study develops a relationship between the material property, detector parameters, notch geometry and expected contrast that would result from the radiograph image. This relationship can be used as a transfer function towards evaluating the resultant contrast from a notch and extrapolating the results towards a hairline crack. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The GNSS-based bistatic SAR (GNSS-BSAR) system has emerged as a hotspot due to its low power consumption, nice concealment, and worldwide reach. However, the weak landing power density of the GNSS signal often necessitates prolonged integration to achieve an adequate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this case, the effects of the receiver's time-frequency errors and atmospheric disturbances are significant and cannot be ignored. Therefore, we propose an ionospheric scintillation compensation-based imaging scheme for dual-channel GNSS-BSAR system. This strategy first extracts the reference phase, which contains the ionospheric phase scintillation and other errors. Subsequently, the azimuth phase of the target is divided into difference phase and reference phase. We apply the two-step phase compensation to eliminate Doppler phase errors, thus achieving precise focusing of SAR images. Three sets of experiments using the GPS L5 signal as the illuminator were conducted, coherently processing a 1.5 km by 0.8 km scene about 300 s. The comparative results show that the proposed method exhibited better focusing performance, avoiding the practical challenges encountered by traditional autofocus algorithms. Additionally, ionospheric phase scintillation extracted at different times of the day suggest diurnal variations, preliminary illustrating the potential of this technology for ionospheric-related studies. Gadolinium pyrosilicate (GPS, Gd2Si2O7) single crystals with different doping concentrations of Tb (0.1–2.0 mol%) are successfully fabricated using the floating-zone technique. In this work, the dependence of Tb-doping concentration on the photoluminescence (PL) and scintillation properties of Tb-doped GPS (Tb:GPS) has been investigated. The PL emission contour graph shows multiple emissions, with the strongest emissions at 378 nm for 0.1% and 0.5% Tb-doping and 544 nm for 1.0% and 2.0% Tb-doping, corresponding to Tb3+ 4f-4f transitions. The PL lifetimes of the specimens range from 4.89 to 5.22 ms. The scintillation spectra exhibit comparable wavelength and intensity trends to the PL emission. The scintillation lifetimes of the specimens range from 2.41 to 3.88 ms. The Tb:GPS specimens demonstrate a relatively excessive afterglow level, with Af20 values ranging from 1640 to 7250 ppm and Af40 values ranging from 136 to 362 ppm. Using recently developed pulse height measurement for millisecond decay scintillators, under excitation at 662 keV γ-rays, the 1.0% Tb:GPS specimen exhibits the highest scintillation light yield among all other specimens at 95,600 ph/MeV, making Tb:GPS one of the highest light yield oxide scintillators. This paper presents the effects of background reduction with anticoincidence logical condition between the sum of muon-sensitive large scintillator veto detectors and a germanium detector as well as the time evolution of rejected, muon-induced coincidence gamma spectra. A special attention is paid to neutron effects. The digital event-by-event registration used for data acquisition opens possibilities to study in an off-line mode the variety of effects related to the time structure of all signals registered by detectors. Electron density irregularities in the ionosphere can give rise to scintillations, affecting radio wave phase and amplitude. While scintillations in the cusp and polar cap regions are commonly associated with mesoscale density inhomogeneities and/or shearing, the auroral regions exhibit a strong correlation between scintillation and density structures generated by electron precipitation (arcs). We aim to examine the impact of electron precipitation on the formation of scintillation‐producing density structures using a high‐resolution physics‐based plasma model, the "Geospace Environment Model of Ion‐Neutral Interactions," coupled with a radio propagation model, the "Satellite‐beacon Ionospheric‐scintillation Global Model of the upper Atmosphere." Specifically, we explore the effects of varying spatial and temporal characteristics of the precipitation, including electron total energy flux and their characteristic energies, obtained from the all‐sky‐imagers and Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar observations, on auroral scintillation. To capture small‐scale structures, we incorporate a power‐law turbulence spectrum that induces short wavelength features sensitive to scintillation. The development of large‐area transparent organic‐inorganic hybrid metal halide (OIMH) scintillation screens is restricted by the anisotropic single‐crystal growth, numerous grain boundaries in polycrystalline wafers, and inhomogeneous dispersion in perovskite‐polymer composite films. The crystal‐glass phase transition of OIMH materials may provide a promising solution for the above significant challenges. Herein, a new class of transparent amorphous guanidinium‐based manganese bromide glasses, (DPG)2MnBr4 and (DOTG)2MnBr4 (DPG = 1,3‐diphenylguanidinium, DOTG = 1,3‐di‐o‐tolylguanidinium), are synthesized through a low‐temperature melt‐quenching process. The (DOTG)2MnBr4 shows impressive glass‐forming ability because of large viscosity (η) at the melting temperature (Tm) (η(Tm) = 3426 mPa·s) and small fragility index (m = 52.35), which can be a potential glass scintillator. The large‐area (e.g., 13 cm × 13 cm) transparent amorphous (DOTG)2MnBr4 glass scintillator shows high light transmittance of > 80%, a low detection limit of 237.3 nGy s−1 and high X‐ray imaging spatial resolution of 12 lp mm−1. Interestingly, the glass transition temperature of < 40 °C gives (DOTG)2MnBr4 glass unique thermoplastic properties, allowing it to conform to irregularly shaped objects and reduce the distortion in X‐ray imaging. Scintillators with high spatial‐resolution and high‐stability are highly desirable for X‐ray imaging applications at unpredictable environments. To challenge state‐of‐the‐art technology, it is necessary to design high thermal stable scintillators with high‐resolution and high light yield. In this work, the zero‐thermal‐quenching Lu3Al5O12:Ce3+ (LuAG: Ce3+) transparent ceramics (TCs) is synthesized with high optical transparency. The thermoluminescence (TL) curves of the as‐obtained TCs demonstrate that the formation of the oxygen vacancies, acting as the trapping centers, can capture the carriers and then contribute to the enhancement of its thermals stability via the thermal compensation effect. The exceptional thermal‐stability of the TCs scintillator endows the monitoring of the dynamic changes of the internal structure of the objective samples without any ghosting effects during heating. In addition, given the ultra‐high uniform, transparency, and fast light decay of the TCs scintillator, the excellent spatial resolution (≈112 lp mm−1) of the X‐ray microscopic imaging is realized. These results undeniably demonstrate that the as‐obtained LuAG: Ce3+ TCs have great prospects for advancement in X‐ray detectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The high durability under harsh environment including high temperature, high humidity, and high radiation is required for scintillators used for decommissioning of nuclear facilities and radiation monitoring in nuclear fusion reactors. α‐SiAlON ceramics are highly potential for such scintillators because of their thermal and mechanical durability and luminescence corresponding to doped rare‐earth ion. In this study, scintillation properties of transparent Lu‐α‐SiAlON:Ce3+ ceramics were investigated for the first time. Lu‐α‐SiAlON:Ce3+ showed the scintillation responses to α‐rays and X‐rays. The α‐rays‐induced scintillation decay curve consists of two components whose decay time are 48 and 652 ns. The faster decay component most presumably results from 4f‐5d transition of Ce3+, whereas the origin of the slower one is unclear but may be defects in α‐SiAlON. The light yield of the Lu‐α‐SiAlON:Ce3+ ceramics was 1300 photons 5.5 MeV−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: A dosimeter with high spatial and temporal resolution would be of significant interest for pencil beam scanning (PBS) proton beams' characterization, especially when facing small fields and beams with high temporal dynamics. Optical imaging of scintillators has potential in providing sub‐millimeter spatial resolution with pulse‐by‐pulse basis temporal resolution when the imaging system is capable of operating in synchrony with the beam‐producing accelerator. Purpose: We demonstrate the feasibility of imaging PBS proton beams as they pass through a plastic scintillator detector to simultaneously obtain multiple beam parameters, including proton range, pencil beam's widths at different depths, spot's size, and spot's position on a pulse‐by‐pulse basis with sub‐millimeter resolution. Materials and methods: A PBS synchrocyclotron was used for proton irradiation. A BC‐408 plastic scintillator block with 30 × 30 × 5 cm3 size, and another block with 30 × 30 × 0.5 cm3 size, positioned in an optically sealed housing, were used sequentially to measure the proton range, and spot size/location, respectively. A high‐speed complementary metal‐oxide‐semiconductor (CMOS) camera system synchronized with the accelerator's pulses through a gating module was used for imaging. Scintillation images, captured with the camera directly facing the 5‐cm‐thick scintillator, were corrected for background (BG), and ionization quenching of the scintillator to obtain the proton range. Spots' position and size were obtained from scintillation images of the 0.5‐cm‐thick scintillator when a 45° mirror was used to reflect the scintillation light toward the camera. Results: Scintillation images with 0.16 mm/pixel resolution corresponding to all proton pulses were captured. Pulse‐by‐pulse analysis showed that variations of the range, spots' position, and size were within ± 0.2% standard deviation of their average values. The absolute ranges were within ± 1 mm of their expected values. The average spot‐positions were mostly within ± 0.8 mm and spots' sigma agreed within 0.2 mm of the expected values. Conclusion: Scintillation‐imaging PBS beams with high‐spatiotemporal resolution is feasible and may help in efficient and cost‐effective acceptance testing and commissioning of existing and even emerging technologies such as FLASH, grid, mini‐beams, and so forth. Background: Dosimetry in pre‐clinical FLASH studies is essential for understanding the beam delivery conditions that trigger the FLASH effect. Resolving the spatial and temporal characteristics of proton pencil beam scanning (PBS) irradiations with ultra‐high dose rates (UHDR) requires a detector with high spatial and temporal resolution. Purpose: To implement a novel camera‐based system for time‐resolved two‐dimensional (2D) monitoring and apply it in vivo during pre‐clinical proton PBS mouse irradiations. Methods: Time‐resolved 2D beam monitoring was performed with a scintillation imaging system consisting of a 1 mm thick transparent scintillating sheet, imaged by a CMOS camera. The sheet was placed in a water bath perpendicular to a horizontal PBS proton beam axis. The scintillation light was reflected through a system of mirrors and captured by the camera with 500 frames per second (fps) for UHDR and 4 fps for conventional dose rates. The raw images were background subtracted, geometrically transformed, flat field corrected, and spatially filtered. The system was used for 2D spot and field profile measurements and compared to radiochromic films. Furthermore, spot positions were measured for UHDR irradiations. The measured spot positions were compared to the planned positions and the relative instantaneous dose rate to equivalent fiber‐coupled point scintillator measurements. For in vivo application, the scintillating sheet was placed 1 cm upstream the right hind leg of non‐anaesthetized mice submerged in the water bath. The mouse leg and sheet were both placed in a 5 cm wide spread‐out Bragg peak formed from the mono‐energetic proton beam by a 2D range modulator. The mouse leg position within the field was identified for both conventional and FLASH irradiations. For the conventional irradiations, the mouse foot position was tracked throughout the beam delivery, which took place through repainting. For FLASH irradiations, the delivered spot positions and relative instantaneous dose rate were measured. Results: The pixel size was 0.1 mm for all measurements. The spot and field profiles measured with the scintillating sheet agreed with radiochromic films within 0.4 mm. The standard deviation between measured and planned spot positions was 0.26 mm and 0.35 mm in the horizontal and vertical direction, respectively. The measured relative instantaneous dose rate showed a linear relation with the fiber‐coupled scintillator measurements. For in vivo use, the leg position within the field varied between mice, and leg movement up to 3 mm was detected during the prolonged conventional irradiations. Conclusions: The scintillation imaging system allowed for monitoring of UHDR proton PBS delivery in vivo with 0.1 mm pixel size and 2 ms temporal resolution. Background: Gamma camera imaging, including single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), is crucial for research, diagnostics, and radionuclide therapy. Gamma cameras are predominantly based on arrays of photon multipliers tubes (PMTs) that read out NaI(Tl) scintillation crystals. In this way, standard gamma cameras can localize ɣ‐rays with energies typically ranging from 30 to 360 keV. In the last decade, there has been an increasing interest towards gamma imaging outside this conventional clinical energy range, for example, for theragnostic applications and preclinical multi‐isotope positron emission tomography (PET) and PET‐SPECT. However, standard gamma cameras are typically equipped with 9.5 mm thick NaI(Tl) crystals which can result in limited sensitivity for these higher energies. Purpose: Here we investigate to what extent thicker scintillators can improve the photopeak sensitivity for higher energy isotopes while attempting to maintain spatial resolution. Methods: Using Monte Carlo simulations, we analyzed multiple PMT‐based configurations of gamma detectors with monolithic NaI (Tl) crystals of 20 and 40 mm thickness. Optimized light guide thickness together with 2‐inch round, 3‐inch round, 60 × 60 mm2 square, and 76 × 76 mm2 square PMTs were tested. For each setup, we assessed photopeak sensitivity, energy resolution, spatial, and depth‐of‐interaction (DoI) resolution for conventional (140 keV) and high (511 keV) energy ɣ using a maximum‐likelihood algorithm. These metrics were compared to those of a "standard" 9.5 mm‐thick crystal detector with 3‐inch round PMTs. Results: Estimated photopeak sensitivities for 511 keV were 27% and 53% for 20 and 40 mm thick scintillators, which is respectively, 2.2 and 4.4 times higher than for 9.5 mm thickness. In most cases, energy resolution benefits from using square PMTs instead of round ones, regardless of their size. Lateral and DoI spatial resolution are best for smaller PMTs (2‐inch round and 60 × 60 mm2 square) which outperform the more cost‐effective larger PMT setups (3‐inch round and 76 × 76 mm2 square), while PMT layout and shape have negligible (< 10%) effect on resolution. Best spatial resolution was obtained with 60 × 60 mm2 PMTs; for 140 keV, lateral resolution was 3.5 mm irrespective of scintillator thickness, improving to 2.8 and 2.9 mm for 511 keV with 20 and 40 mm thick crystals, respectively. Using the 3‐inch round PMTs, lateral resolutions of 4.5 and 3.9 mm for 140 keV and of 3.5 and 3.7 mm for 511 keV were obtained with 20 and 40 mm thick crystals respectively, indicating a moderate performance degradation compared to the 3.5 and 2.9 mm resolution obtained by the standard detector for 140 and 511 keV. Additionally, DoI resolution for 511 keV was 7.0 and 5.6 mm with 20 and 40 mm crystals using 60 × 60 mm2 square PMTs, while with 3‐inch round PMTs 12.1 and 5.9 mm were obtained. Conclusion: Depending on PMT size and shape, the use of thicker scintillator crystals can substantially improve detector sensitivity at high gamma energies, while spatial resolution is slightly improved or mildly degraded compared to standard crystals. Background: Inorganic scintillation detectors (ISDs) are promising for in vivo dosimetry in brachytherapy (BT). ISDs have fast response, providing time resolved dose rate information, and high sensitivity, attributed to high atomic numbers. However, the conversion of the detector signal to absorbed dose‐to‐water is highly dependent on the energy spectrum of the incident radiation. This dependence is comprised of absorbed dose energy dependence, obtainable with Monte Carlo (MC) simulation, and the absorbed dose‐to‐signal conversion efficiency or intrinsic energy dependence requiring measurements. Studies have indicated negligible intrinsic energy dependence of ZnSe:O‐based ISDs in Ir‐192 BT. A full characterization has not been performed earlier. Purpose: This study characterizes the intrinsic energy dependence of ZnSe:O‐based ISDs for kV X‐ray radiation qualities, with energies relevant for BT. Methods: Three point‐like ISDs made from fiber‐coupled cuboid ZnSe:O‐based scintillators were calibrated at the Swedish National Metrology Laboratory for ionizing radiation. The calibration was done in terms of air kerma free‐in‐air, Kair${K}_{{\mathrm{air}}}$, in 13 X‐ray radiation qualities, Q$Q$, from 25 to 300 kVp (CCRI 25–250 kV and ISO 4037 N‐series), and in terms of absorbed dose to water, Dw${D}_{\mathrm{w}}$, in a Co‐60 beam, Q0${Q}_0$. The mean absorbed dose to the ISDs, relative to Kair${K}_{{\mathrm{air}}}$ and Dw${D}_{\mathrm{w}}$, were obtained with the MC code TOPAS (Geant4) using X‐ray spectra obtained with SpekPy software and laboratory filtration data and a generic Co‐60 source. The intrinsic energy dependence was determined as a function of effective photon energy, Eeff${E}_{eff}$, (relative to Co‐60). The angular dependence of the ISD signal was measured in a 25 kVp (0.20 mm Al HVL) and 135 kVp beam (0.48 mm Cu HVL), by rotating the ISDs 180° around the fiber's longitudinal axis (perpendicular to the beam). A full 360° was not performed due to setup limitations. The impact of detector design was quantified with MC simulation. Results: Above 30 keV Eeff${E}_{eff}$ the intrinsic energy dependence varied with less than 5 ± 4% from unity for all detectors (with the uncertainty expressed as the mean of all expanded measurement uncertainties for individual Eeff${E}_{eff}$ above 30 keV, k = 2). Below 30 keV, it decreased with up to 17% and inter‐detector variations of 13% were observed, likely due to differences in detector geometry not captured by the simulations using nominal geometry. In the 25 kVp radiation quality, the ISD signal varied with 24% over a ∼45° rotation. For 135 kVp, the corresponding variation was below 3%. Assuming a 0.05 mm thicker layer of reflective paint around the sensitive volume changed the absorbed dose with 6.3% at the lowest Eeff${E}_{eff}$, and with less than 2% at higher energies. Conclusion: The study suggests that the ISDs have an intrinsic energy dependence relative to Co‐60 lower than 5 ± 4% in radiation qualities with Eeff${E}_{eff}\ $> 30 keV. Therefore, they could in principle be calibrated in a Co‐60 beam quality and transferred to such radiation qualities with correction factors determined only by the absorbed dose energy dependence obtained from MC simulations. This encourages exploration of the ISDs' applications in intensity modulated BT with Yb‐169 or other novel intermediate energy isotopes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
