The article discusses furloughs for college employees. A furlough is unpaid time that must be taken by an employee in order for their employer to cut costs. The author profiles several people that have been furloughed in 2009, including Daniel Childers, a professor in the School of Sustainability at Arizona State University, who talks about labor laws and their regulation of furloughs, and Megan Shockley, an associate professor of history at Clemson University, who spreads her furlough across many paychecks.
