This paper examines the problem of predictive gear scheduling for fuel consumption minimization in connected/automated heavy trucks. The literature highlights the fuel economy benefits of such predictive scheduling, but there is a need to optimize such scheduling online, in real time. To address this need, we begin by using dynamic programming (DP) to schedule gear shifting offline, in a manner that achieves a globally optimal Pareto tradeoff between the conflicting objectives of minimizing fuel consumption and shift frequency. The computational cost of DP is unfavorable for online implementation, but we present two algorithms addressing this challenge. Both algorithms rely on the fact that in the Pareto limit where fuel consumption minimization is the sole objective, DP furnishes a simple static shift map. Our first algorithm trains a recurrent neural network to prune the shift schedule generated by this map. The second algorithm performs this pruning in a direct manner tailored to reduce the schedule's rain flow count. We simulate these algorithms for different drive cycles. Both algorithms achieve a reasonable tradeoff between fuel consumption and gear shift frequency. The time synchronization in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) has gained significant attention in recent times. In this paper, we focus on the time synchronization in large-scale VANETs and propose an adaptive beacon time synchronization (ABTS) algorithm to enhance timing message synchronization. ABTS algorithm selects the best time synchronization pairs to decrease the number of timing messages transmitted. To guarantee the reliability of synchronization, the clock offset of the connected vehicles periodically readjust to provide a better degree of synchronization accuracy with minimum energy consumption. Based on two-way timing message synchronization, we derive maximum likelihood (ML) estimation and its equivalent Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for clock offset design in the generalized sender-to-receiver system by assuming a Gaussian noise model. We propose node pair selection algorithms to improve pairwise beacon message timing synchronization. The simulation results validate that our proposed ABTS algorithm performs better than other protocols in terms of synchronization accuracy, the rate of convergence and energy efficiency. We consider the energy-efficient mobility-aware content caching problem with clustered small cells (SCs) in ultra-dense networks (UDNs). The UDN is regarded as one of the key solutions to overcome the explosive growth of mobile data traffic and consequential energy consumption. In addition, caching the popular contents at the edge of UDNs can further mitigate the challenges of traffic and energy. In this paper, we group the SCs into disjoint clusters and model the mobility of users between clusters as a Markov chain. We formulate the caching problem aimed at minimizing the overall energy consumption for content delivery to the moving users. Then we decompose the complicated task of energy consumption optimization in cache-enabled UDNs into two sub-problems. In the first sub-problem, we formulate the inter-cluster caching problem as minimizing the energy consumption for serving a user request by the macro base station. We show that the first sub-problem is NP-hard, and develop a polynomial-heuristic algorithm. Further, we define the mobility-oblivious version of the sub-problem, and provide a ${\textstyle {1 \over {2k }}}$ -approximation solution for the mobility-aware based on this mobility-oblivious version. In the second sub-problem, we consider the heterogeneity of small cells and define the intra-cluster caching problem. The aim of this sub-problem is the placement of content in different SCs within the cluster so that the energy consumption for the content delivery in that cluster is minimized. In particular, the second sub-problem fits the general framework of the generalized assignment problem, which allows us to exploit its rich literature, to determine the optimal solution for our problem. Through extensive simulations based on real wireless data and human mobility patterns, we demonstrate the benefits of our approach that is even up to 56% better compared to the conventional caching schemes. The combination of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is an efficient solution to significantly enhance the energy efficiency of the wireless communication system. In this paper, a downlink multi-cluster NOMA network is considered, where each cluster is supported by one IRS. This paper aims to minimize the transmit power by jointly optimizing the beamforming, the power allocation and the phase shift of each IRS. The formulated problem is non-convex and challenging to be solved due to the coupled variables, i.e., the beamforming vector, the power allocation coefficient and the phase shift matrix. To address this non-convex problem, an alternating optimization based algorithm is proposed. Specifically, the primal problem is divided into two subproblems for beamforming optimization and phase shifting feasiblity, where the two subproblems are solved iteratively. Moreover, to guarantee the feasibility of the beamforming optimization problem, an iterative algorithm is proposed to search the feasible initial points. To reduce the complexity, a simplified algorithm based on partial exhaustive search for this system model is also proposed. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed alternating algorithm can yield a better performance gain than the partial exhaustive search algorithm, NOMA with random IRS phase shift scheme and OMA-IRS scheme. In delay-tolerant networks (DTNs), stable end-to-end connections do not always exist. Messages are forwarded, assisted by the mobility of nodes, in a store–carry–forward paradigm. The mobility of nodes in most DTNs has a certain statistical regularity; thus, using historical information in DTNs to compute the delivery quality of nodes can help to select good forwarding nodes. This paper aims to establish a routing scheme based on multihop delivery quality, which is designed to reduce the energy consumption of message forwarding while maintaining a high delivery rate. We characterized the multihop delivery quality of each node with an expected delay and an expected probability, parameterized by the remaining hop count. Based on these two quality metrics, we developed two algorithms, namely, the delay-inferred forwarding (DIF) algorithm and the probability-inferred forwarding (PIF) algorithm. The basic idea of DIF and PIF is to find the optimal forwarding path by minimizing the expected delay and by maximizing the expected probability, respectively, in the hop graph that is defined in this paper. We performed extensive trace-driven simulations to compare our algorithm to other representative routing algorithms using several real traces. We observed the following: 1) Compared with the delegation algorithm, which uses one-hop delivery quality, both DIF and PIF significantly improve the message delivery rate, and they yield more improvements as the mobility of nodes becomes more regular; and 2) compared with the state-of-the-art optimal opportunistic forwarding (OOF) algorithm, which also uses a multihop delivery quality, DIF and PIF have significantly smaller forwarding overhead (with the maximum reduction in the number of forwarding being over 40%), whereas they are quite close to OOF in terms of both delivery rate and average delay. As Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) features random topology and accommodates freely connected nodes, it is important that the cooperation among the nodes exists. This paper proposes a trust model called Implicit Web of Trust in VANET (IWOT-V) to reason out the trustworthiness of vehicles. Such that untrusted nodes can be identified and avoided when we make a decision regarding whom to follow or cooperate with. Furthermore, the performance of Cooperative Intelligent Transport System (C-ITS) applications improves. The idea of IWOT-V is mainly inspired by web page ranking algorithms such as PageRank. Although there does not exist explicit link structure in VANET because of random topology and dynamic connections, social trust relationship among vehicles exists and an implicit web of trust can be derived. To accomplish the derivation, two algorithms are presented, i.e., BayesTrust and VehicleRank. They are responsible for deriving the local and global trust relationships, respectively. The simulation results show that IWOT-V can accurately identify trusted and untrusted nodes if enough local trust information is collected. In this correspondence paper, an underlay cognitive radio multicast network, consisting of a cognitive base station (CBS) and multiple multicast groups of secondary users (SUs), is considered. All SUs, belonging to a particular multicast group, are served by the CBS using a common primary user (PU) channel. The goal is to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of the system, through dynamic adaptation of target rate and transmit power for each multicast group, under the PUs’ individual interference constraint. The optimization problem formulated for this is proved to be nonquasi-concave with respect to the joint variation of the CBS's transmit power and target rate. Recent developments and advancements in wireless networks have brought about new challenges including the backhaul bottleneck and content download latency. The paper focuses on an enterprise wireless network consisting of various candidate caching nodes to serve users’ requests such as Femto Access Points (FAPs) and Mobile Users (MUs), supported by Device-to-Device (D2D) communications. Due to the fact that user's mobility is one of the inherent features of massive wireless networks, where FAPs operate in an open access mode, the small transmission range of FAPs leads to triggering frequent handovers. Taking the above challenges into account, we propose a novel Mobility-Aware Femtocaching scheme based on Handover (MAFH). To implement a real wireless network, a random walk model as the mobility pattern of users is utilized within the proposed scheme. In this regard, the best caching node is selected by considering the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) value and the velocity of users as decision criteria to extend the time interval between two consecutive handovers and increase the battery life of devices. The effectiveness of the proposed MAFH algorithm is evaluated in terms of the cache hit ratio, transferred byte volume, connecting time, content delivery time, the number of handovers, and the energy consumption of clients. In this paper, we design the UAV trajectory to minimize the total energy consumption while satisfying the requested timeout (RT) requirement and energy budget, which is accomplished via jointly optimizing the path and UAV's velocities along subsequent hops. The corresponding optimization problem is difficult to solve due to its non-convexity and combinatorial nature. To overcome this difficulty, we solve the original problem via two consecutive steps. Firstly, we propose two algorithms, namely heuristic search, and dynamic programming (DP) to obtain a feasible set of paths without violating the GU's RT requirements based on the traveling salesman problem with time window (TSPTW). Then, they are compared with exhaustive search and traveling salesman problem (TSP) used as reference methods. While the exhaustive algorithm achieves the best performance at a high computation cost, the heuristic algorithm exhibits poorer performance with low complexity. As a result, the DP is proposed as a practical trade-off between the exhaustive and heuristic algorithms. Specifically, the DP algorithm results in near-optimal performance at a much lower complexity. Secondly, for given feasible paths, we propose an energy minimization problem via a joint optimization of the UAV's velocities along subsequent hops. Finally, numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms. The results show that the DP-based algorithm approaches the exhaustive search's performance with a significantly reduced complexity. In this paper, we study an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) enabled video streaming system, where a rotary-wing UAV is dispatched as a mobile base station to serve multiple ground users (GUs) with dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP (DASH). By introducing the Quality of Experience (QoE) utility model, we investigate the joint design of transmit power and bandwidth allocation as well as UAV trajectory for maximization of minimum utility among all GUs, subject to information-causality constraints for video playing and UAV total energy budget, which consists of both communication related energy and UAV propulsion energy. The formulated problem is non-convex and difficult to be solved directly. An efficient algorithm is proposed to obtain the suboptimal solution by applying the successive convex approximation and alternating optimization techniques. In this paper, we consider a computation offloading problem in a three-tier network consisting of multiple mobile users (MUs), multiple edge clouds, and a central cloud. On this basis, we formulate a system Energy Time Cost ($ETC$) minimization problem by jointly optimizing the resource allocation, mobile-edge matching decision, and offloading decision. Due to the difficulty of directly solving the formulated problem, we decompose it and propose two offloading algorithms, namely Gale-Shapley based Minimum/Sequential Offloading Algorithm (GS-MOA/GS-SOA), to optimize offloading decisions by minimizing the system $ETC$ , in which the mobile-edge matching strategies based on the proposed Gale-Shapley based Mobile-Edge mAtching aLgorithm (GS-MEAL) and resource allocations are optimized iteratively. Due to signal fading and user mobility in wireless networks, quality-of-service provisioning for wireless services has become more challenging. As a promising technique, cooperative communications make use of the broadcasting nature of the wireless medium to facilitate data transmission and, thereby, reduce energy consumption. However, in many studies on wireless cooperative diversity, it is often assumed that the number of relays or the relay distribution intensity is known a priori. In this paper, we relax this assumption and propose an algorithm to estimate the relay intensity for a backoff-based cooperative scheme, where the relays are distributed as a homogeneous Poisson point process. It is proved that the algorithm can converge to an optimal solution with the minimum estimation error. Based on the estimated relay intensity, we further investigate a distributed energy saving strategy, which selectively turns off some relays to reduce energy consumption while maintaining the required transmission success probability. The performance of the proposed cooperative scheme is analytically evaluated with respect to the collision probability. The numerical and simulation results demonstrate the high accuracy and efficiency of the intensity estimation algorithm and validate the theoretical analysis. Moreover, the proposed cooperative scheme exhibits significant energy savings and satisfactory transmission performance, which offers a good match to accommodate green communications in wireless networks. Resource Allocation (RA) is one of the important factors in network function virtualization (NFV) deployment. As physical (PHY) layer resources are limited, e.g., transmitted energy and channel uses, the RA problem at the PHY layer for NFV deployment has become a fast-growing problem, especially for supporting ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC). Moreover, different nodes in NFV have different requirements for end-to-end communication, e.g., a controller has more stringent reliability requirements than does a logical node. There is a need for efficient and robust RA algorithms at the PHY layer for NFV deployment. To illustrate these challenges, we consider an up-link (UL) transmission protocol for NFV deployment, in which wireless transmissions with short packets are considered, and both the packet length and the transmission power are adjustable. Then, for three NFV deployment scenarios, we formulate three RA problems as three optimization problems to obtain the optimal parameters. Since these optimization problems are highly non-convex and they include excessive constraint conditions, the global optimal solutions are hard to obtain and are even infeasible for the conventional heuristic algorithms due to their low convergence efficiency. To address these problems, in this paper, the intelligent scheme of the modified shuffled frog-leaping algorithm (MSFLA) based on improved extremal optimization (EO) is applied to design RA algorithms. Three RA algorithms are designed for three NFV deployment scenarios to evaluate the quality of the solutions produced by the MSFLA-EO scheme. We perform simulations of three proposed RA algorithms in terms of various performance parameters. With the advancement of the next generation of cellular systems, flexible mechanisms for Discontinuous Reception (DRX) are needed in order to save energy. 5G will bring heterogeneous packet sizes and traffic types, as well as an increasing need for energy efficiency. The current static DRX mechanism is inadequate to meet these needs. In this paper we exploit channel prediction to develop integer programming models. We aim to minimize the energy usage of user devices while streaming video, as well as to create extended sleep opportunities, while simultaneously preventing buffer underflows. We also develop an online algorithm to obtain an efficient solution robust to prediction errors. Our results show that using a variable DRX cycle length can reduce the energy usage by up to 60 percent and 40 percent, in the offline and online cases, respectively, compared with a static DRX configuration. Our proposed online algorithm can also reduce the number of buffer underflows by up to 97 percent compared to the offline case. The 5th-generation (5G) mobile networks and beyond need to support massive machine-type communications (MTC) devices with limited available radio resources. In this paper, we study the power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technology to support energy-efficient massive MTC networks, where MTC devices exchange information using sporadic and low-rate short packets. We investigate the subchannel allocation and power control policy to maximize the achievable effective energy efficiency (EE) for uplink NOMA-based massive MTC networks, taking into account of short-packet communication characteristics. We model the subchannel allocation problem as a multi-agent Markov decision process and propose an efficient Q-learning algorithm to solve it. Furthermore, we obtain the optimal transmission power policy by approximating the achievable effective rate of uplink NOMA-based short packet communications. In this paper, we develop an energy efficient resource allocation scheme for orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) networks with in-band full-duplex (IBFD) communication between the base station and user equipments (UEs) considering a realistic self-interference (SI) model. Our primary aim is to maximize the system energy efficiency (EE) through a joint power control and sub-carrier assignment in both the downlink (DL) and uplink (UL), where the quality of service requirements of the UEs in DL and UL are guaranteed. The formulated problem is non-convex due to the non-linear fractional objective function and the non-convex feasible set which is generally intractable. In order to handle this difficulty, we first use fractional programming to transform the fractional objective function to the subtractive form. Then, by employing Dinkelbach method, we propose an iterative algorithm in which an inner problem is solved in each iteration. Applying majorization-minimization approximation, we make the inner problem convex. Also, by introducing a penalty function to handle integer sub-carrier assignment variables, we propose an iterative algorithm for addressing the inner problem. We show that our proposed algorithm converges to the locally optimal solution which is also demonstrated by our simulation results. In addition, simulation results show that by applying the IBFD capability in OFDMA networks with efficient SI cancellation techniques, our proposed resource allocation algorithm attains a 75% increase in the EE as compared to the half-duplex system. The past years have seen a rapid development of autonomous underwater vehicle-aided (AUV-aided) data-gathering schemes in underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASNs). The use of AUVs efficiently reduces energy consumption of sensor nodes. However, all AUV-aided solutions face severe problems in data collection delay, especially in a large-scale network. In this paper, to reduce data collection delay, we propose a prediction-based delay optimization data collection algorithm (PDO-DC). On the contrary to the traditional delay optimization algorithms, Kernel Ridge Regression (KRR) is utilized via cluster member nodes to obtain the corresponding prediction models. Then, the AUV can obtain all cluster data by traversing less cluster head nodes, which can effectively reduce the collection delay of the AUV. Device-to-Device (D2D) communication with short communication distance is an efficient way to improve spectrum efficiency and mitigate interference. To realize the optimal resource configuration including wireless channel matching and power allocation, a distributed resource matching scheme is proposed based on deep reinforcement learning(DRL). The reward is defined as the difference of achieve rate of D2D users and the consumed power, which is limited by the Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) of the other cellular users on the current channel. The proposed algorithm maximizes the D2D throughput and energy efficiency in a distributed manner, without online coordination and message exchange between users. The considered resource allocation problem is formulated as a random non-cooperative game with multiple players (D2D pairs), where each player is a learning agent, whose task is to learn its best strategy based on locally observed information, multi-user communication resource matching algorithm is proposed based on a Double Deep Q-network (DDQN), where the total cellular throughput and user energy efficiency could converge to the Nash equilibrium (NE) under the mixed strategy. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the communication rate and energy efficiency of each user by selecting the optimal strategy, and has better convergence performance compared with existing schemes. Small cells are introduced to cellular systems to enhance coverage and improve capacity. Densely deploying small cells can not only offload the traffic of macrocells but also provide an energy- and cost-efficient way to meet the sharp increase in traffic demands in mobile networks. However, such a cell deployment paradigm also leads to heterogeneous network (HetNet) infrastructure and raises new challenges for cell planning. In this paper, we study the cell planning issue in the HetNet. Our optimization task is to select a subset of candidate sites to deploy macro or small cells to minimize the total cost of ownership (TCO) or the energy consumption of the cellular system while satisfying practical constraints. We introduce approximation algorithms to cope with two different cell-planning cases, which are both NP-hard. First, we discuss the macrocell-only case. Our proposed algorithm achieves an approximation ratio of O(\log R) in this scenario, where R is the maximum achievable capacity of macrocells. Then, we introduce an O(\log \widetildeR)-approximation algorithm to the small-cell scenario, where \widetildeR is the maximum achievable capacity of a macrocell with small cells overlaid on it. Spectrum sensing data falsification (SSDF) attacks represent a major challenge for cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) in cognitive radio (CR) networks. In an SSDF attack, a malicious user or many malicious users send false sensing results to the fusion center (FC) to mislead the global decision about spectrum occupancy. Thus, an SSDF attack degrades the achievable detection accuracy, throughput, and energy efficiency of CR networks (CRNs). In this paper, a novel attacker-identification algorithm is proposed that is able to skillfully detect attackers and reject their reported results. Moreover, we provide a novel attacker-punishment algorithm that aims at punishing attackers by lowering their individual energy efficiency, motivating them either to quit sending false results or leave the network. Both algorithms are based on a novel assessment strategy of the sensing performance of each user. The proposed strategy is called delivery-based assessment, which relies on the delivery of the transmitted data to evaluate the made global decision and the individual reports. Mathematical analysis and simulation results show promising performance of both algorithms compared with previous works, particularly when then the number of attackers is very large. This is the second paper in a series of two that describe our research in intelligent energy management in a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). In the first paper, we presented the machine-learning framework ML_EMO_HEV, which was developed for learning the knowledge about energy optimization in an HEV. The framework consists of machine-learning algorithms for predicting driving environments and generating the optimal power split of the HEV system for a given driving environment. In this paper, we present the following three online intelligent energy controllers: 1) IEC_HEV_SISE; 2) IEC_HEV_MISE ; and 3) IEC_HEV_MIME. All three online intelligent energy controllers were trained within the machine-learning framework ML_EMO_HEV to generate the best combination of engine power and battery power in real time such that the total fuel consumption over the whole driving cycle is minimized while still meeting the driver's demand and the system constraints, including engine, motor, battery, and generator operation limits. The three online controllers were integrated into the Ford Escape hybrid vehicle model for online performance evaluation. Based on their performances on ten test drive cycles provided by the Powertrain Systems Analysis Toolkit library, we can conclude that the roadway type and traffic congestion level specific machine learning of optimal energy management is effective for in-vehicle energy control. The best controller, IEC_HEV_MISE, trained with the optimal power split generated by the DP optimization algorithm with multiple initial SOC points and single ending point, can provide fuel savings ranging from 5% to 19%. Together, these two papers cover the innovative technologies for modeling power flow, mathematical background of optimization in energy management, and machine-learning algorithms for generating intelligent energy controllers for quasioptimal energy flow in a power-split HEV. This paper proposes a new algorithm to evaluate the performance of the mobile edge computing system. Specifically, a new metric called computation efficiency is defined as the number of calculated data bits divided by the corresponding energy consumption. In order to compute the required data timely, we combine two schemes, local computing and data offloading, into a joint computation algorithm. An optimization problem is formulated with the objective to maximize the sum of computation efficiency among users with weighting factors. With iterative and gradient descent methods, the problem can be solved efficiently. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms traditional approaches. In addition, the tradeoff study between local computing and data offloading reveals that when data size is small, local computing plays a more important role, but when the size grows, data offloading becomes preferable. Radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting technique has received high attention as a promising technology for Internet of Things (IoT) based industrial systems due to its flexibility of energy supply. When multiple IoT gateways are used as directional RF energy sources, the direction and phase of RF energy transmissions influence the RF energy transmission efficiency. In this paper, we propose a phase-aware directional energy transmission algorithm (PA-DETA) where directional RF energy sources (e.g., IoT gateways) are connected to a controller and their operation parameters (i.e., RF energy transmission direction and initial phase) are decided by the controller to maximize the total harvested energy while maintaining the energy consumption in RF energy sources and the number of discarded packets due to energy depletion of harvesting nodes below certain levels. To optimize the performance of PA-DETA, we formulate a constraint Markov decision process and the optimal policy on the direction and initial phase of RF energy transmissions is obtained by a linear programming. Evaluation results demonstrate that PA-DETA with the optimal policy outperforms the comparison schemes in terms of the total harvested energy, the energy consumption in RF energy sources, and the packet discard rate. This paper aims at solving two classes of energy efficiency (EE) maximization problems in multiple channels wireless communication systems. First, the EE maximization problem with sum power constraint is solved based on the geometric water-filling approach; and second, the approach is extended into the EE maximization problem with additional least throughput requirement constraint. Our proposed algorithms make use of the water-filling structure of the optimal solution and provide exact and computation efficient solution to the energy-efficient power allocation problems. The proposed algorithms also have excellent scalability, which is applicable for large-scale wireless communication systems. Optimality of the proposed algorithms is strictly proved, and the proposed algorithms only require low-degree polynomial computational complexity. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithms. To the best of our knowledge, no prior algorithms in the existing literature could provide such solutions to the EE maximization problems under the merit of exactness and the efficiency. In this paper, we propose to develop wireless Sensor Networks with Mobile Sinks (MSSNs). The proposed MSSN is highly energy efficient, because the multihop transmissions of high-volume data over the network are converted into single-hop transmissions. We focus our investigation on sparsely deployed networks, where single node-to-sink transmission is considered. The transmission-scheduling algorithm (TSA-MSSN) is proposed, where a parameter λ is employed to control the tradeoff between the maximization of the probability of successful information retrieval and the minimization of the energy-consumption cost. It is shown that the proposed implementation of the TSA-MSSN has a complexity of O(1). The present paper is dedicated to the investigation of a predictive Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy. The objective is to determine the torque split between the internal combustion engine and the electric machine of a hybrid vehicle. The energy management is formulated as a receding optimization problem. To avoid a complex prediction of the vehicle speed and acceleration over time, the slow dynamic of their distribution is exploited. A rational tuning of the algorithm parameters is proposed as well as some improved implementations. The number of individual operations (additions, multiplications, interpolations, etc) required per seconds is discussed. Finally, the energy management algorithm energy consumption are assessed over different driving cycles, including one with a \boldsymbol 15406  ${km}$ length obtained using GPS measurements. In this paper, we investigate power allocation algorithms in a downlink millimeter wave non-orthogonal multiple access (mmWave-NOMA) system, which consists of one base station (BS) and a group of two-user clusters. Specifically, two optimization problems are formulated to maximize the achievable sum rate (ASR) and energy efficiency (EE), respectively, while satisfying the individual quality of service (QoS) constraints. To ensure the stability of successive interference cancellation (SIC-stability), we specially add the power order constraints, which are often neglected in existing works. By dividing each formulated problem into more tractable inter-cluster and intra-cluster sub-problems, and deriving the corresponding solutions, we propose the ASR maximization based power allocation (ASRMax-PA) and EE maximization based power allocation (EEMax-PA) algorithms. Numerical results show that the proposed ASRMax-PA (EEMax-PA) algorithm is much better than the state-of-the-art schemes in term of ASR (EE), while yields quite good EE (ASR) performance simultaneously. To decrease potentially harmful effects to the environment and reduce costs of cellular network operators, the exploration of energy saving is significant. In this paper, we shed light on the following energy consumption minimization (ECM) problem: “how to select the smallest set of active base stations (BSs) that can preserve the quality of service (the minimum data rate) required by the users.” Since the ECM problem belongs to the field of integer programming and is NP-hard, we propose two low-complexity approximation algorithms that yield performance guarantees: the iterative minimal set cover algorithm and the iterative maximal coverage (IMC) algorithm. Moreover, by leveraging the submodularity theory, we establish the performance bound of the IMC algorithm. Finally, the computational complexity of our proposed algorithms is analyzed, and a simulation platform is developed to evaluate the number of active BSs of proposed approaches. In opportunistic mobile networks (OppNets), a large amount of energy is consumed by idle listening, instead of infrequent data exchange. This makes energy saving a challenging and fundamental problem in OppNets since nodes are typically battery powered. Asynchronous duty-cycle operation is a promising approach for energy saving in OppNets; however, if its working schedule is not effectively designed, it may also cause significant network performance degradation. Therefore, it is pressing to design an energy-efficient working schedule for duty-cycle OppNets. In this paper, we first analyze the contact process in duty-cycle OppNets and then propose an adaptive working schedule for duty-cycle OppNets. The proposed adaptive working schedule uses the past recorded contact histories to predict future contact information to adaptively configure the working schedule of each node in the network. Finally, extensive real trace-driven simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of our proposed adaptive working schedule. In wireless local area networks (WLANs), switching of the nodes to low-power sleep mode to save energy is common. However, if sleep time is not properly scheduled, significant delays can occur, which is undesirable in delay-constrained applications. In this paper, we propose a novel energy-efficient sleep-scheduling protocol for maximizing the sleep time lengths of each node while satisfying the delay constraints. We first consider the single-user case and present the basic steps that the node takes to decide when and how long it can sleep. For the multiuser scenario, to mitigate channel contention in packet downloading after sleeping, the sleep schedules requested by the nodes are coordinated by the access point (AP) to avoid overlapping active epochs. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed sleep-scheduling algorithm achieves lower loss rate while achieving higher energy efficiency than that of the existing GreenCall method. This paper presents an on-line energy management strategy (EMS) based on trip condition prediction for commuter plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (P-HEVs). The purpose is to provide an on-line predictive control approach to minimize fuel consumption. Two pivotal contributions are provided to realize the purpose. First of all, we establish the trip condition prediction model by using back propagation neural network, to obtain the real-time vehicle-speed trajectory on-line. Particularly, both the genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization algorithm are applied to improve the prediction accuracy of the trip condition prediction model. Next, to obtain an applicable EMS in real time, we propose a dynamic programming-based predictive control strategy. Finally, a simulation study is conducted for applying the proposed strategy to a practical trip path in the Beijing road network. The results show that the designed trip condition prediction model can effectively realize the on-line vehicle-speed prediction, and the prediction accuracy is more than 93%. In addition, compared to the offline global optimization EMS, although the proposed strategy makes the fuel consumption grow less than 5.2%, it can be implemented in real time. Moreover, compared with the existing real-time EMSs, it can further reduce the fuel consumption and emissions. Both Device-to-device (D2D) and full-duplex (FD) have been widely recognized as spectrum efficient techniques in the fifth-generation (5G) networks. By combining them, the FD-D2D aided underlaying networks (FN) has exhibited considerable technical advantages in terms of both spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). Considering the fact that the performance of FN may be severely affected by users’ workload, the workload-driven FN (WFN) must be investigated. In this paper, a deep learning based transmit power allocation (TPA) method is proposed for automatically determining the optimal transmit powers of co-spectrum cellular users (CUs) and D2D users (DUs) relying on a deep neural network. Unlike the conventional transmit-power-control schemes, in which complex optimization problems must be addressed in an iterative manner (it usually requires a relative longer computational time), the proposed scheme enables each DU to determine its transmit power with a relatively shorter time. Furthermore, an improved iterative subspace-pursuit algorithm, as the performance benchmark, is formulated for WFN. In addition, to reflect the influence imposed by the workload, the penalty-based statistical sum-date-rate (PSS) can be employed as the performance metric of WFN. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme is capable of achieving a PSS comparable with that of the traditional iterative-based algorithms even under heavy-workload scenarios, but the computational complexity of the former can be significantly reduced. Combining intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is an effective solution to enhance communication coverage and energy efficiency. In this paper, we focus on an IRS-assisted NOMA network and propose an energy-efficient algorithm to yield a good tradeoff between the sum-rate maximization and total power consumption minimization. We aim to maximize the system energy efficiency by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming at the BS and the reflecting beamforming at the IRS. Specifically, the transmit beamforming and the phases of the low-cost passive elements on the IRS are alternatively optimized until the convergence. The implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in wireless networks is becoming more and more popular because of the growing number of mobile devices and the availability of huge amount of data. However, directly transmitting data for centralized learning will cause long communication latency owing to the limited communication resource and may incur severe privacy issue as well. To address these issues, we consider the federated edge learning (FEEL) system in this paper and develop an importance-aware joint data selection and resource allocation algorithm to maximize the learning efficiency. Aiming at selecting important data for local training, we first analyze the relation between loss decay and gradient norm, which indicates that larger gradient norm generally leads to faster learning speed. Based on this, a learning efficiency maximization problem is formulated by jointly considering the communication resource allocation and data selection. The closed-form results for optimal communication resource allocation and data selection are both developed, where some insights are also highlighted. Furthermore, an optimal algorithm with low computational complexity is developed to obtain the optimal end-to-end latency in one training period. We show that the sample size should be set to its upper limit in order to maximize the learning performance. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments on three popular convolutional neural network (CNN) models. Next-generation wireless communications are expected to provide reliable high-rate connectivity. The recent concept of fog-enabled architecture comes to rescue by invoking a substantial amount of data storage close to end-user devices for meeting these challenges. Thus, caching popular contents at heterogeneous devices, e.g., fog nodes (FNs) or fog access points (FAPs), constitutes a promising technique of reducing both the traffic and the energy consumption of the backhaul links. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an energy-efficient caching and node association algorithm for cache-aided fog networks. First, we solve the problem of energy-efficient content caching and delivery in the FNs/FAPs in conjunction with a fixed node association strategy, where the FNs communicate either with other FNs by node-to-node (N2N) communications or with the FAPs in their proximity. In both caching scenarios, we investigate the relationship between the caching probability of the file and the energy-efficient content delivery by formulating the associated energy efficiency (EE) optimization problem under caching memory constraints. Then, we derive a joint modulation mode allocation strategy and caching policy for each content caching node and conceive a joint node association and caching algorithm for maximizing the EE. Aerial Base Stations (ABSs) promise resilient and perpetual connectivity after unexpected events such as natural disasters. However, the deployment and scheduling of ABSs introduce several algorithmic challenges. In particular, on-demand communication can change over time and be hard to accurately predict, so it needs to be handled in an online manner, accounting also for battery consumption constraints. This paper presents AirNet, an efficient software-based solution to operate ABSs which meet these requirements. AirNet is based on an efficient placement algorithm for ABSs which maximizes the number of covered users, and a scheduler which navigates and recharges ABSs in an energy-aware manner. To this end, we propose an energy-aware deployment algorithm and use an energy model to analyze the power consumption and thereby, improve the flight endurance. In addition, we evaluate a novel scheduling mechanism that efficiently manages the ABSs’ operations. In this paper, weighted sum energy efficiency (WSEE) in uplink and downlink of a multi-user non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system is considered. we adopt a more realistic power consumption model where signal processing power is modeled as a linear function of transmit power. Rather than the well-known network-centric global energy efficiency (GEE) metric, which is a pseudo-concave (PC) function, the weighted sum energy efficiency metric is considered, which is not PC in general. To find the optimum user power allocation Dinkelbach-like algorithm is adopted, by which each individual fractional EE function is converted to a parametric function where under some conditions on the weights falls into a class of convex optimization problems and it is solved in the dual domain. The dual variables are updated using a sub-gradient and cutting plane-based algorithm, which here ellipsoid method is used. Since the optimum solution restricts user weights, a low complexity suboptimum algorithm that does not consider any condition on user's weights is proposed. The problem is non-convex in general; hence, epigraph form followed by successive convex approximation (SCA) is used to deal with that problem. In order to help user terminal devices (UTDs) efficiently handle computation-intensive and time-delay sensitive computing task, multi-access edge computing (MEC) has been proposed. However, due to the differences among the performance of UTDs, and the resource limitation of MEC servers, the joint optimization between the offloading decisions of UTDs and the allocation of resources in network is still a focus of the research. This paper studies the joint computation offloading and resource allocation strategy in multi-user and multi-server scenarios. Firstly, we formulate the joint optimization problem of computation offloading and resource allocation as a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINP) problem to minimize the energy consumption of UTDs, by constraining the offloading decision, channel selection, power allocation and resource allocation. Secondly, we propose a two-stage heuristic optimization algorithm based on genetic algorithms, which divides the joint optimization problem of computation offloading and resource allocation in two stages. Based on the coupling relationship between the offloading decision and the resource allocation scheme, we iteratively update the solution of the problem, and finally obtain the stable convergence solution of the optimization problem. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication are two important technologies considered for the fifth generation (5G) of mobile networks. In this paper, we propose a machine-to-machine (M2M) communication underlaying heterogeneous network (HetNet) with mmWave-NOMA transmission, where small cell users (SCUs) and machine type communication (MTC) devices share the same resource block (RB) to increase the network capacity. We formulate an optimization problem to select efficient users and allocate transmission powers to SCUs and MTC devices. The object of optimization is to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) subject to the minimum spectral efficiency (SE) requirements and maximum transmission powers. We present a low computational complexity sub-optimum solution based on the non-cooperative game. An iterative algorithm with fast convergence speed and a reduced complexity search-based algorithm are respectively presented to solve the power control and user selection problems. The comparison between the proposed solution and optimum solution for different number of transmit antennas indicate that there is a small gap between SEs and EEs of the proposed and optimum solutions. Further, the results of user selection scheme demonstrate that the location of strong user affects the performance. Underwater gliders are being increasingly used for data collection, and the development of methods for optimizing their routes has become a topic of active research. With this aim in mind, in this paper, a complete-coverage path-planning obstacle-avoidance (CCPP-OA) algorithm that ensures avoidance for underwater gliders in sea areas with thermoclines is proposed. First, the entire sea area with the thermocline layer is stratified based on the underwater communication radii of the gliders. Next, the glide angles and initial navigation points of the gliders are determined based on their communication radii at each level to construct the complete-coverage path. Finally, by combining the ant colony algorithm and the determined initial navigation points, the complete-coverage path with obstacle avoidance is planned for the gliders. Simulation results show that the proposed CCPP-OA algorithm enables complete coverage of the entire sea area. Mobile edge computing (MEC) has become a promising technology for real-time communications. Mobile devices can reduce the energy consumption and prolong the lifetime significantly via offloading the computing tasks to the MEC server. Moreover, physical layer security techniques can ensure the secure transmission of the offloading data. This paper investigates a MEC system that consists of an access point, multiple mobile devices and a malicious eavesdropper. The tasks allocation, local central processor's frequency, offloading power, and offloading timeslots are optimized jointly to minimize the total energy consumption of the system. A difference of convex algorithm based scheme is proposed to solve the joint optimization problem. Moreover, a Karush Kuhn Tucker conditions based algorithm is also proposed to reduce the computational complexity. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithms are very effective. In this paper, we consider parallel and sequential task offloading to multiple mobile edge computing servers. The task consists of a set of inter-dependent sub-tasks, which are scheduled to servers to minimize both offloading latency and failure probability. Two algorithms are proposed to solve the scheduling problem, which are based on genetic algorithm and conflict graph models, respectively. Simulation results show that these algorithms provide performance close to the optimal solution, which is obtained through exhaustive search. Furthermore, although parallel offloading uses orthogonal channels, results demonstrate that the sequential offloading yields a reduced offloading failure probability when compared to the parallel offloading. On the other hand, parallel offloading provides less latency. However, as the dependency among sub-tasks increases, the latency gap between parallel and sequential schemes decreases. This paper studies generalized spatial modulation (Gen-SM) schemes in multicell multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems as a promising high-throughput and energy-efficient technique for fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks. A detection algorithm for such systems is proposed based on linear processing techniques. By applying the concept of order statistics, a general framework for approximating the achievable sum rates with linear detection is also given. The probability of detecting antenna combinations is analyzed and is used to approximate the sum-rate performance with practical channel conditions, such as antenna correlation, imperfect channel information, and pilot contamination. The fundamental trade-off between spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) is also investigated. Despite offering less SE, spatial modulation (SM) with a single active antenna per user is shown to be the most energy-efficient transmission mode among the Gen-SM class. Within the operating range of SM (i.e., in the low-to-moderate SE regime), SM is demonstrated to achieve better EE compared with conventional massive MIMO schemes. The performance in terms of economic efficiency, indicating economic profitability (in monetary unit per second), is also analyzed and is shown to serve as a complementary performance metric, enabling an implicit trade-off between SE and EE. In this paper, we study the energy-efficient resource allocation problem for device-to-device (D2D) communication underlaying cellular networks, which aims to maximize the minimum weighted energy efficiency of D2D links while guaranteeing minimum data rates for cellular links. We first characterize the optimal power allocation of the cellular links to transform the original resource allocation problem into the joint subchannel and power allocation problem for D2D links. We then propose three resource allocation algorithms with different complexity levels, namely, dual-based, branch-and-bound (BnB), and relaxation-based rounding (RBR) algorithms. While the dual-based algorithm solves the problem by using the dual decomposition method, the BnB and RBR algorithms tackle the problem by employing the relaxation approach. We establish the strong performance guarantees for the proposed algorithms through theoretical analysis. This paper develops a novel approach to obtain energy-efficient transmission schedules for delay-limited bursty data under nonideal circuit power consumption. Assuming a priori knowledge of packet arrivals, deadlines, and channel realizations, we show that the problem can be formulated as a convex program. For both time-invariant and time-varying fading channels, it is revealed that the optimal transmission between any two consecutive channel or data state changing instants, termed epoch, can only take one of the three strategies: i) no transmission; ii) transmission with an energy-efficiency (EE)-maximizing rate over part of the epoch; or iii) transmission with a rate greater than the EE-maximizing rate over the whole epoch. Based on this specific structure, efficient algorithms are then developed to find the optimal policies that minimize the total energy consumption with low complexity. The proposed approach can provide the optimal benchmarks for practical schemes designed for transmissions of delay-limited data arrivals and can be employed to develop efficient online scheduling schemes, which require only causal knowledge of data arrivals and deadline requirements. Multistream carrier aggregation (MSCA) is a promising technique to boost data rates by enabling users to connect with multiple base stations (BSs) simultaneously. In this paper, we investigate joint user association and resource allocation for MSCA systems to achieve energy efficiency (EE) balance among different BSs. We aim at maximizing the weighted summation of EE values for different BSs, which is modeled as a nonconvex combinatorial sum-of-ratios optimization problem. To develop an upper bound algorithm, we first relax the combinatorial variables and then transform the problem into a series of convex optimization problems by the successive convex approximation (SCA) method. We also propose a low-complexity suboptimal algorithm, which divides the original optimization problem into two steps: user association and channel allocation, as well as power allocation. This paper presents a methodology of calculating the optimal torque and speed commands for the engine–generator system of a series hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). In series HEVs, the engine–generator subsystem provides electrical energy to the dc link. This paper proposes an optimal control strategy of the engine–generator subsystem to generate a desired amount of energy within a given period of time. The optimization algorithm, based on trajectory optimization, determines the torque and speed reference signals for the engine–generator subsystem that achieve maximum efficiency. A simplified version of the controller is also presented for online implementation. In this paper, a reliable algorithm is proposed, which aims at providing the desired reliability, avoiding the data loss due to probable failures, and guaranteeing the energy consumption balancing among all fog nodes (FNs) in the fog-enabled Internet of Things (IoT) networks. To this end, first, a new optimization model is defined to find the best transmission power and the best transmission rate of each terminal node (TN) based on the channel conditions and the desired reliability of the network. This paper investigates UAV-to-UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) communications with a turning angle constraint, in which the information transmission time is minimized by joint UAV flight path planning and transmit power control. Considering the communication throughput requirement, peak transmit power, energy consumption, UAV flight speed, collision avoidance, and turning angle constraints, the joint UAV flight path planning and transmit power control problem is formulated as a non-convex optimization. Different from majority of prior studies that separately optimize the UAV flight path and transmit power, we develop a successive convex approximation based time minimization algorithm that simultaneously updates the UAV path and transmit power. We further prove that the proposed algorithm is guaranteed to converge. In addition, an initialization scheme is designed to start the proposed time minimization algorithm by solving an energy minimization problem. In this paper, we consider a wireless-powered network with co-channel interference where the transmitters control their transmit power and receivers harvest wireless energy using a time switching policy. Considering the interference channels among multiple nodes, we jointly optimize the transmit power and energy harvesting time to maximize the energy efficiency of the network. To solve this non-convex optimization problem, we first design an iterative algorithm based on a typical optimization technique, and then, propose a learning algorithm based on a neural network with a proper loss function.
