The trade e off between protection and weight is a constant consideration when designing a portable protective solution. Greater mobility is a desirable attribute and protection must therefore adapt, prompting a demand for lightweight, simple to construct, low-cost and effective ballistic protection systems. High strength and ductility, wave spreading capability and good energy absorption are key properties for ballistic protection. Four materials, polycarbonate, Kevlar®-epoxy, polyurethane foam, and aluminium alloy, possess these properties and were selected for analysis by numerical simulation. Multilayered configurations were proven to be an optimal solution, by exploiting the advantages of each material without having large penalties of mass and cost. Numerical modelling using ANSYS AUTODYN® is used to simulate monolithic and multi-layered target configurations, to obtain the penetration mitigation performance. The results are analysed to select configurations based on different requirements, such as lowest cost, lowest mass, best performance, and optimal configuration which balanced the three key parameters mentioned. The optimal configuration of Aluminium, Kevlar-Epoxy, Polyurethane, and Polycarbonate has layers with thickness of 7, 3, 38, 2 mm respectively with a total mass of 7.97 kg, total cost of $39.86 and penetration of 29.34% (14.67 mm). Researchers use a variety of target materials, and sometimes combinations of materials, in their archaeological experiments to examine thrust‐spear or projectile penetration, impact angle, durability, and other issues involving prehistoric hunting weaponry. This variety of target materials is beneficial to archaeological science in several ways, but it may also hinder the comparison of results because many of these target materials do not necessarily share similar physical properties. Here, we assess the penetration properties of four different target materials—store‐bought meat, clay, and two types of gelatin—via static penetration tests of a modern broadhead‐tipped arrow and a stone‐tipped projectile attached to an Instron Universal Materials Tester. Our analyses of load‐deflection curves, peak load, and work energy demonstrate how the four target materials are similar in some ways but different in others, which suggests that researchers may strategically employ one or several depending on the question asked or hypothesis tested. Secondary blast injuries may result from high-velocity projectile fragments which ultimately increase medical costs, reduce active work time, and decrease quality of life. The role of skin penetration requires more investigation in energy absorption and surface mechanics for implementation in computational ballistic models. High-speed ballistic penetration studies have not considered penetrating and non-penetrating biomechanical properties of the skin, including radial wave displacement, resultant surface wave speed, or projectile material influence. A helium-pressurized launcher was used to accelerate 3/8″ (9.525 mm) diameter spherical projectiles toward seventeen whole porcine legs from seven pigs (39.53 ± 7.28 kg) at projectile velocities below and above V50. Projectiles included a mix of materials: stainless steel (n = 26), Si3N4 (n = 24), and acetal plastic (n = 24). Tracker video analysis software was used to determine projectile velocity at impact from the perpendicular view and motion of the tissue displacement wave from the in-line view. Average radial wave displacement and surface wave speed were calculated for each projectile material and categorized by penetrating or non-penetrating impacts. Two-sample t-tests determined that non-penetrating projectiles resulted in significantly faster surface wave speeds in porcine skin for stainless steel (p = 0.002), plastic (p = 0.004), and Si3N4 ball bearings (p = 0.014), while ANOVA determined significant differences in radial wave displacement and surface wave speed between projectile materials. Surface wave speed was used to quantify mechanical properties of the skin including elastic modulus, shear modulus, and bulk modulus during ballistic impact, which may be implemented to simulate accurate deformation behavior in computational impact models. The ricochet phenomenon has been studied worldwide for a long time in consideration of its significance in ballistics. A ricochet projectile has proven to be worthless to its launcher, as warheads fail to penetrate the interior of targets and strike the facilities and personnel of enemies effectively. A large portion of related research has been dedicated to avoiding ricocheting, which mainly focuses on improving the penetration ability of a projectile in order to obtain a better penetration effect, while investigations on the proactive protection of key targets from damage caused by a ricochet projectile are minor. This study analytically explores the ricochet range of a projectile obliquely penetrating a thick steel target. Firstly, the moment of momentum equation of the ricochet projectile based on theoretical mechanics is utilised to analytically calculate its trajectory, where a mathematical model of a two-stage ricochet impacting is established through the geometrical analysis of the ricochet process for determining the ricochet range of a projectile and the size of the bulletproof structure. Then, impact experiments of a projectile obliquely penetrating thick steel targets at different striking velocities and inclination angles are carried out, and the influences of the striking velocity and angle of attack on the damage pattern, area and penetration depth are discussed to identify the ricochet phenomenon. Moreover, the deflection angle of the ricochet projectile is computed, which is compared with the experimental measurements in order to validate the accuracy of this proposed model. Ballistic penetration of machine guards is a topic of great significance for ensuring safety and avoiding projection of objects out of the working space of machines. Although standardized tests are performed according to EU Directive 2006/42/EC, they have some limitations because they are carried out using a given penetrator that perpendicularly impacts a given surface of about 500 × 500 mm. Nevertheless, the withstanding capacity of those guards depends on a lot of different design parameters and physical quantities that have not been fully investigated. This paper is focused on the study of the influence of the machine guard size on the withstanding capacity to ballistic penetration throughout theoretical models and experimental tests based on an innovative method involving the use of 3D optical scanners for inspection. The experimental analyses described in this work, compared to theoretical results, demonstrate that a maximum plastic deformation area can be defined, independently of the plate size, given the same material, thickness, and penetrator. In shooting crimes, ballistics tests are often recommended in order to reproduce the wound characteristics of the involved persons. For this purpose, several "simulants" can be used. However, despite the efforts in the research of "surrogates" in the field of forensic ballistic, the development of synthetic models needs still to be improved through a validation process based on specific real caseworks. This study has been triggered by the findings observed during the autopsy performed on two victims killed in the same shooting incident, with similar wounding characteristics; namely two retained head shots with ricochet against the interior wall of the skull; both projectiles have been recovered during the autopsies after migration in the brain parenchyma. The thickness of the different tissues and structures along the bullets trajectories as well as the incident angles between the bullets paths and the skull walls have been measured and reproduced during the assemblage of the synthetic head models. Two different types of models ("open shape" and "spherical") have been assembled using leather, polyurethane and gelatine to simulate respectively skin, bone and soft tissues. Six shots have been performed in total. The results of the models have been compared to the findings of post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) and the autopsy findings.Out of the six shots, two perforated the models and four were retained. When the projectile was retained, the use of both models allowed reproducing the wounds characteristics observed on both victims in terms of penetration and ricochet behaviour. However, the projectiles recovered from the models showed less deformation than the bullets collected during the autopsies. The "open shape" model allowed a better controlling on the shooting parameters than the "spherical" model. Finally, the difference in bullet deformation could be caused by the choice of the bone simulant, which might under-represent either the strength or the density of the human bone. Current methods used in terminal ballistics to determine the volume of temporary cavities created by projectiles in soft tissue simulants (such as ballistic soap) usually involve silicone-casting to obtain the cavity moulds. However, these methods have important drawbacks including their little sensitivity and precision, besides the fact that they are destructive. Imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT) might not only overcome those limitations but also offer useful tools for digitally reporting the scientific results. This work accomplished the 3D digital reconstruction of the cavities created by different projectiles in ballistic soap blocks. This way, the total volume of the cavities, the projectile penetration depths, and other measurements were determined, rendering better capabilities when compared to the current silicone method. All these features were achieved through the CT analysis and 3D Slicer imaging software. In addition, it is worth mentioning that the method can preserve the evidence by digitally obtaining, signing, and storing the infographic videos displaying the 3D-reconstructed cavities. Penetration and perforation performance of the rock targets by hard projectiles is suitable for understanding the ballistic behavior of the strategic and important structures such as protective structures, bunkers, ammunition stores, and nuclear power plants that are sensitive to missile impacts. In this study, ballistic penetration tests and numerical simulations were performed to examine the behavior of geo-material targets against hard projectile impacts. The granitic rock plates were used as target materials, and the projectiles were made of hardened 4340 steel. A loading-rate dependent shear failure model was suggested based on experimental data andimplemented into LS-DYNA using a usermaterial subroutine. Analytical formulas for calculating the maximum velocity of penetration of doublelayer cermet and ceramic/organic-plastic targets are obtained taking into account the structural characteristics of the target and the physical and mechanical properties of the projectile and target materials. Using these formulas, the ballistic resistance of targets was studied and the possibility of optimizing their structure was shown. The results agree qualitatively with available experimental data. The optimal relative thickness of the ceramic layer which provides maximum penetration velocity was determined at areal densities of the target of 30-50 kg/m for different substrate materials. It is found that these velocity values depend weakly on the areal density of the target and are mainly determined by the properties of the substrate material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Interior ballistics analysis is required for the development of the gun system. Interior ballistics is a complex phenomenon containing the propellant combustion and gas flow and is completed in tens of milliseconds during gun firing. Thus, some data cannot be directly measured by experiment. Numerical analysis is therefore traditionally used to understand the complex gun firing phenomena. In previous studies, the two-dimensional axisymmetric numerical method for interior ballistics using the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach has been developed. There are some limits in depicting the actual phenomena with two-dimensional models. Therefore, a three-dimensional numerical model has been built in the present study. Unlike the conventional method, the calculation has been conducted by separating the physical phenomena into the combustion part and the flow part for simplicity and efficiency. The internal flow in the gun barrel has been calculated by using the STAR-CCM+ and the source terms produced by the propellant combustion has been computed by utilizing the existing code. The developed numerical model has been compared with the AGARD gun results and the simulation of 40 mm gun firings. The reliability of the developed model has been confirmed because the results of the numerical analysis greatly agree with the simulation results. The subject of the paper is a description of a simple test from the field of terminal ballistics and the handling of issues arising during its simulation using the numerical techniques of the finite element method. With regard to the possible excessive reshaping of the finite element mesh there is a danger that problems will arise such as the locking of elements or the appearance of negative volumes. It is often necessary to introduce numerical extensions so that the simulations can be carried out at all. When examining local damage to structures, such as the penetration of the outer shell or its perforation, it is almost essential to introduce the numerical erosion of elements into the simulations. However, when using numerical erosion, the dissipation of matter and energy from the computational model occurs in the mathematical background to the calculation. It is a phenomenon which can reveal itself in the final result when a discrepancy appears between the simulations and the experiments. This issue can be solved by transforming the eroded elements into smoothed particle hydrodynamics particles. A nacre-like composite armor consisting of BC tablets and polyurea matrix is modeled, and its ballistic impact behavior and penetration resistance (under a normal and a 15°-oblique impact by a solid right circular cylindrical projectile) were analyzed using a series of transient, nonlinear dynamic, finite-element analyses. Nacre is a biological material constituting the innermost layer of the shells of gastropods and bivalves. It consists of polygonal tablets of aragonite, tessellated to form individual layers and having the adjacent layers as well as the tablets within a layer bonded by a biopolymer. Due to its highly complex hierarchical microstructure, nacre possesses an outstanding combination of mechanical properties, the properties which are far superior to the ones that are predicted using the homogenization techniques such as the rule of mixtures. The results of the transient nonlinear dynamic analysis pertaining to the ballistic impact response and the penetration resistance of the modeled nacre-like armor are compared with their counterparts for the BC single-block armor having an identical areal density. Furthermore, the effect of various nacre microstructural features (e.g., surface profiling, micron-scale asperities, mineral bridges between the overlapping tablets lying in adjacent layers) on the ballistic penetration resistance of the nacre-like composite armor is investigated in order to identify an optimal nacre-like composite-armor architecture having the largest penetration resistance. The results obtained clearly show that a nacre-like armor possesses a superior penetration resistance relative to its monolithic counterpart, and that the nacre microstructural features considered play a critical role in the armor penetration resistance. In practical forensic casework, backspatter recovered from shooters' hands can be an indicator of self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the head. In such cases, backspatter retrieved from inside the barrel indicates that the weapon found at the death scene was involved in causing the injury to the head. However, systematic research on the aspects conditioning presence, amount and specific patterns of backspatter is lacking so far. Herein, a new concept of backspatter investigation is presented, comprising staining technique, weapon and target medium: the 'triple contrast method' was developed, tested and is introduced for experimental backspatter analysis. First, mixtures of various proportions of acrylic paint for optical detection, barium sulphate for radiocontrast imaging in computed tomography and fresh human blood for PCR-based DNA profiling were generated (triple mixture) and tested for DNA quantification and short tandem repeat (STR) typing success. All tested mixtures yielded sufficient DNA that produced full STR profiles suitable for forensic identification. Then, for backspatter analysis, sealed foil bags containing the triple mixture were attached to plastic bottles filled with 10 % ballistic gelatine and covered by a 2-3-mm layer of silicone. To simulate backspatter, close contact shots were fired at these models. Endoscopy of the barrel inside revealed coloured backspatter containing typable DNA and radiographic imaging showed a contrasted bullet path in the gelatine. A new penetration equation for ballistic limit analysis (BLA) of a projectile–target pair is developed and presented. A critical review of the classic BLA (CBLA) has identified that the CBLA penetration equations do not satisfy the conservation of momentum and energy principles simultaneously and completely. It has also been found that the classic definition of residual velocity of the projectile does not quantify the instantaneous rigid body velocity of the projectile at ballistic limit. A new definition of the projectile relative velocity with respect to the target in contact (and in motion) is defined, and this new definition is used to define the projectile instantaneous velocity at ballistic limit. With this new definition of the projectile instantaneous velocity, the new penetration equation is derived satisfying both the conservation of momentum and energy principles simultaneously. A general functional form of the new penetration equation is used in analyzing experimental data and the results are found to match well with the experiments. The new equation is shown to be able to explain projectile residual velocity at and around ballistic limit, can predict the jump velocity at ballistic limit (if any), and is applicable to experimental ballistic data of a wide range of thin and thick targets. The present work sets the background for further development of theoretical penetration models incorporating material properties and parameters of the projectile–target pair. In this study, the penetration of tungsten projectile into the composite ceramics - metal target is stimulated using Autodyn software. The behavioral equation used in this simulation is Johnson Cook for projectile and metal and Johnson Holmquist for ceramic. Also, the equation of state used in tungsten projectile and metal is linear and in ceramic layer is Polynomial. In each model the output speed of the projectile is calculated and compared with the results of experimental tests. The results obtained indicate a good agreement between performed simulation and experimental results. Multi-axial aramid fabrics have a wide range of applications in the construction of composite structures for body armor. Nanoparticles, which include nanosilica, are one of the most common nanofillers for these structures. The particles of nanosilica possess nanometer dimensions with high specific surface area. Silane coupling agents are mostly used for modifying nanosilica surface in order to prevent silica agglomeration. Incorporation of nanosilica treated with silane adhesion promoter, in the matrix part of the hybrid composite form, leads to increased resistance to the bullet shock impact. In this study, the resistance to penetration of a shot bullet was tested for four samples of the aramid fabric composite forms. All fabrics were coated with γ-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (AMEO silane)/ethanol solution. Two samples were impregnated with poly (vinyl butyral) (PVB)/ethanol solution, while the other two were impregnated with the same solution, but with the addition of the 30 wt.% AMEO silane modified silica nanoparticles as reinforcement. The samples were both hard and flexible options. The bullet-shooting test was applied to all the composites by two different bullet types. The structural design of the samples improved the ballistic resistance after the bullets were shot. Studies of ballistic penetration into metal plates and their numerical simulation currently play a vital role in the defence sector. However, no congruent results have been presented so far, especially when it comes to impact on welded plates. Furthermore, these issues are investigated for normal impacts and very few have made an attempt for oblique impacts. Thus the aim of the present work is to conduct numerical simulation using Abaqus/Explicit in order to evaluate the ballistic performance of similar and dissimilar welded plates subjected to various bullet velocities and impact angles. The effect of post weld residual stresses and associated plastic damage on the ballistic performance of similar (Al6061) and dissimilar (Al 6061- SS 304) welded plates is also determined. Civilian gunshot injuries from handgun and rifle ammunition vary in severity depending on the anatomic location involved and the different effects from the ballistic properties of the penetrating projectiles. Ballistic factors such as the impact velocity and energy should not be considered in isolation, as their specific effects are determined by the interaction between the projectile and tissues. Increased tissue damage can result from tumbling of non-deforming rifle bullets and deformation of expanding bullets. Both of these mechanisms increase substantially the energy transfer to the wound and its diameter, also producing a pulsating temporary cavity associated with pressure changes within tissue. The article presents an experimental and numerical approach to estimate ballistic limits of handgun hollow point bullet Action 5 penetrating the target representing a transport airplane fuselage and a forward obstacle. The target containing the composite sidewall, the insulation glass wool layer and the duralumin skin plate is perforated in two combinations -- directly and using forward obstacle in form of ballistic gel as substitute biological material to achieve the conditions o f firing on-board by Air Marshals, for instance. The ballistic resistance of the fuselage structure fired directly is very poor and in case of firing the gel block first is limited to some extend due to expansion ability of the bullet. The simulation using Finite Element Method system Ansys Autodyn v.14 introduces 2D model presenting the estimation of the ballistic limit inform of gel block thickness for particular combinations of the target based on experiments. A combined theoretical–semiempirical penetration model of ballistic penetration of thick section composites has been developed. The penetration model is developed by breaking down the penetration event into two major phases, that is, (i) the short-time phase I shock compression and (ii) the long-time phase II dynamic penetration. Phase I shock compression considers a one-dimensional stress wave propagation theory and the rate effects on material properties. On the other hand, the phase II dynamic penetration phase incorporates a dynamic increase factor to a semiempirical quasi-static penetration resistance curve. Numerical studies were conducted on the ballistic performance of alumina ceramic (AD95) tiles based on depth of penetration method, when subjected to normal impact of tungsten long rod projectiles at velocities ranging from 1100 to 2000 ms-1. The residual depth on after-effect target was derived in each case, and the ballistic efficiency factor was determined using the corresponding penetration depth on medium carbon steel. Anti-penetration experiment study of the AD95 ceramic tiles to tungsten long rod projectiles has been carried out to verify the accuracy of numerical simulation model. The result shows that numerical simulation results agree well with the corresponding experiment results and AD95 ceramic has excellent ballistic performance than medium carbon steel. The ballistic efficiency factor increases with velocity increasing when impact velocity lower than 1300 ms-1, and when it was higher than 1300 ms-1 the ballistic efficiency factor has almost no difference. In this article a simple penetration model for the terminal ballistic of long rod penetrators is developed. The model is to predict the crater depth of a projectile penetrating into a semi-infinite target. A principle objective was to take an account of strength properties of colliding materials using erosive phenomena. The entire velocity regime from low to hypervelocity is analysed. The effect of the penetrator aspect ratio is also considered in the model. The model developed here is based on the steady-state penetration process and is used to compare with existing experimental measurements. The results of the comparison show very good agreement with experimental investigations of other researchers in this field. The study shows that it is possible to construct a very simple model to predict crater depth for a large range of materials with sufficient accuracy without recourse to high cost of experimentation. In fact, the biggest advantage of this model is simplicity and direct applicability to design process. Historically, penetration mechanics has relied very heavily on experimental investigation. This work gives a quick and easy result with sufficient accuracy which may be useful for many applications. To validate the analytical solution, an experimental method is employed. n analysis for liner collapsing and jet/slug formation of a double-layer shaped charge (DLSC) is presented. Variations of the collapse angle, collapse velocity, and jet velocity of the DLSC are discussed. Numerical simulations based on the Lee-Tarver model are performed to have an insight into the jet formation. Ballistic tests are conducted using a conical (60°) metal liner 56 mm in diameter to have a contrast with an ordinary shaped charge jet. It is shown that the collapse angle and velocity are both increased by the convergent detonation wave in the DLSC. The jet velocity, kinetic energy, and ballistic capability are significantly increased by using the DLSC, and the DLSC is an efficient way to improve shaped charge performance. Because of their lightweight and high hardness, ceramics have been successfully used in protection technologies for over 40 years. The high hardness of a ceramic enables it to break, fragment, and deform impacting projectiles. This paper deals with a number of issues connected to the application of ceramics to ballistic protection, including ceramic hardness, inelastic deformation mechanisms, basic ballistic phenomenology and experimentation, ceramic damage due to ballistic impact, performance/failure maps based upon specific damage/failure mechanisms, and what possible future types of ceramics the suppression of these damage/failure mechanisms guide us to. An engineering analysis of computing the penetration problem of a steel ball penetrating into fibre-reinforced composite targets is presented. Assume the metal ball is a rigid body, and the composite target is a transversely isotropic elasto-plastic material. In the analysis, a spherical cavity dilatation model is incorporated in the cylindrical cavity penetration method. Simulation results based on the modified model are in good agreement with the results for 3-D Kevlar woven (3DKW) composite anti-penetration experiments. The article discusses a study which determined the dwell/penetration transition velocity and penetration velocities for a commercially-available hot-pressed silicon carbide (SiC) in a baseline target configuration. Results showed no apparent effect of thickness on the dwell/penetration transition velocity. Comparison suggests there is a large effect of lateral pre-stress on the transition velocity, but not on penetration velocity.

In this paper, three types of projectiles were designed, which are based on the physical mechanism of high-speed penetrating into concrete targets. The three types of projectiles are ogive nose followed by cylinder, cone and grooved cone shank respectively, which are made of 30CrMnSiNi2A with the yield strength 1570MPa. The unconfined compressive strength of concrete target for test is 50MPa. Seven experiments for striking velocities between 800 and 1100m/s were conducted. The experiments showed that the projectiles of cone and grooved cone shank have better penetration performances and the penetration channels were very straight. Compared with the cylinder shank projectiles, the cone and grooved cone shank projectiles are more effective under the condition of high velocity penetrating into complex geological materials as concrete or rock. The important mechanisms for defeating armor piercing (AP) projectiles are reviewed in this paper. These mechanisms are based on the compressive strength of the target material (its inherent resistance to penetration) and on the asymmetrical forces which it exerts on the threat, through proper geometrical arrangements. We discuss the basic features of the resistance to penetration, starting with the classical analysis of the cavity expansion process in elasto-plastic solids. This property of the target is responsible for the deceleration of hard cored projectiles and for the erosion of long rods, under normal impact conditions. We then discuss the asymmetrical interaction of AP projectiles with inclined plates (metals and polymers) and with ceramic spheres. These asymmetric forces are responsible for their deflection and breakup. Our work combines experimental observations with numerical simulations and engineering models, which enhance the understanding of the various phenomena encountered in these complex situations. The interaction of the flying plate with the Long-rod penetrator has been studied both experimentally and numerically using the LS DYNA 3D finite element code. The influence of the plate velocity and plate material on this interaction has been investigated in details. Numerical results show that there was a relatively large damage of the projectiles. With the relatively recent introduction of quantitative and volumetric X-ray computed tomography (XCT) applied to ballistic impact damage diagnostics, significant inroads have been made in expanding our knowledge base of the morphological variants of physical impact damage. Yet, the current state of the art in computational and simulation modeling of terminal ballistic performance remains predominantly focused on the penetration phenomenon, without detailed consideration of the physical characteristics of actual impact damage. Similarly, armor ceramic material improvements appear more focused on penetration resistance than on improved intrinsic damage tolerance and damage resistance. Basically, these approaches minimize our understanding of the potential influence that impact damage may play in the mitigation or prevention of ballistic penetration. Examples of current capabilities of XCT characterization, quantification, and visualization of complex impact damage variants are demonstrated and discussed for impacted ceramic and metallic terminal ballistic target materials. Potential benefits of incorporating such impact damage diagnostics in future ballistic computational modeling are also briefly discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper is devoted to studying the motion of meteor bodies with mass outflow in a planet’s atmosphere, taking into account the non-isothermal character of the latter. Analytical solutions are obtained at the constant parameter of mass outflow in the model of a nonfragmenting meteoroid. We discuss selected aspects of the physics of electronic transport in nMOSFETs at the 10-nm scale: Long-range Coulomb interactions, which may degrade performance and even prevent ballistic transport from occurring; scattering with high-κ insulator interfacial modes, which depresses the electron mobility but is found to affect minimally the saturated transconductance of 15-nm devices; and the use of high-mobility small effective-mass substrates, which poses serious concerns related to performance limitations due to the density-of-states (DOS) bottleneck and to the band-to-band (Zener) leakage current. On the basis of our results, we argue that ballistic transport may not only be unachievable (because of unavoidable electron-electron collisions) but may also be undesirable, as it may enhance the DOS bottleneck. We also argue that the knowledge of low-field mobility is of little use in predicting quantitatively the performance of devices in the saturated region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A computational approach for the engineering analysis of ablative-type thermal protection systems (TPS) in atmospheric reentry ballistic flights is communicated. We first propose an improved lumped differential approach for ablative thermal protection analysis, which involves the use of materials with low thermal diffusivity. The results obtained for a one-dimensional thermal ablation problem in a finite slab are compared against those obtained by previously reported lumped differential solutions. Benchmark results for the local nonlinear model, obtained through the generalized integral transform technique, are utilized to verify the proposed solution in a realistic ablation problem, consisting of a low thermal diffusivity material subjected to a prescribed net aerodynamic heating. In addition, an integrated symbolic–numerical system is constructed based on the Mathematica platform for the derivation and computation of all the related quantities along the flight, yielding the transient behavior of the TPS recession and thermal performance for both the constant and variable initial thickness along the vehicle nose region. The kinetics of penetration of deformable striking rods into SiC ceramics with different void content is studied. The penetration may be viewed as a two-stage process. At the first stage, the penetration rate is minimal and the rate of contraction of the rod is maximal. At this stage, the penetration resistance of the ceramic is the highest. At the second (quasi-steady-state) stage, the penetration kinetics is similar to the kinetics of penetration into a zero-strength medium and resistance to penetration is largely inertial.
