In this paper, the most common pepper noise in grayscale image noise is investigated in depth in the median filtering algorithm, and the improved median filtering algorithm, adaptive switching median filtering algorithm, and adaptive polar median filtering algorithm are applied to the OTSU algorithm. Two improved OTSU algorithms such as the adaptive switched median filter-based OTSU algorithm and the polar adaptive median filter-based OTSU algorithm are obtained. The experimental results show that the algorithm can better cope with grayscale images contaminated by pretzel noise, and the segmented grayscale images are not only clear but also can better retain the detailed features of grayscale images. A genetic algorithm is a kind of search algorithm with high adaptive, fast operation speed, and good global space finding ability, and it will have a good effect when applied to the threshold finding of the OTSU algorithm. However, the traditional genetic algorithm will fall into the local optimal solution in different degrees when finding the optimal threshold. The advantages of the two interpolation methods proposed in this paper are that one is the edge grayscale image interpolation algorithm using OTSU threshold adaptive segmentation and the other is the edge grayscale image interpolation algorithm using local adaptive threshold segmentation, which can accurately divide the grayscale image region according to the characteristics of different grayscale images and effectively improve the loss of grayscale image edge detail information and jagged blur caused by the classical interpolation algorithm. The visual effect of grayscale images is enhanced by selecting grayscale images from the standard grayscale image test set and interpolating them with bilinear interpolation, bucolic interpolation, NEDI interpolation, and FEOI interpolation for interpolation simulation validation. The subjective evaluation and objective evaluation, as well as the running time, are compared, respectively, showing that the method of this paper can effectively improve the quality of grayscale image interpolation. There is a trend to deploy neural network on edge devices in recent years. While the mainstream of research often concerns with single edge device processing and edge-cloud two-layer neural network collaborative computing, in this paper, we propose partitioning multi-layer edge network for neural network collaborative computing. With the proposed method, sub-models of neural network are deployed on multi-layer edge devices along the communication path from end users to cloud. Firstly, we propose an optimal path selection method to form a neural network collaborative computing path with lowest communication overhead. Secondly, we establish a time-delay optimization mathematical model to evaluate the effects of different partitioning solutions. To find the optimal partition solution, an ordered elitist genetic algorithm (OEGA) is proposed. The experimental results show that, compared with traditional cloud computing, single-device edge computing and edge-cloud collaborative computing, the proposed multi-layer edge network collaborative computing has a smaller runtime delay with limited bandwidth resources, and because of the pipeline computing characteristics, the proposed method has a better response speed when processing large number of requests. Meanwhile, the OEGA algorithm has better performance than conventional methods, and the optimized partitioning method outperforms other methods like random and evenly partition. Considering that in the process of job scheduling, the cluster load should be prebalanced rather than remedied when the load is seriously unbalanced; therefore, in this paper, the task scheduling flow of the Hadoop cluster is analyzed deeply. On the Hadoop platform, a self-dividing algorithm is proposed for load balancing. An intelligent optimization algorithm is used to solve load balance. A dynamic feedback load balancing scheduling method is proposed from the point of view of task scheduling. In order to solve the shortcoming of the fair scheduling algorithm, this paper proposes two ways to improve the resource utilization and overall performance of Hadoop. When the mapping task is completed and the tasks to be reduced are assigned, the task assignment is based on the performance of the nodes to be reduced. It gives full play to the advantages of the ant colony algorithm and the hive colony algorithm so that the fusion algorithm can better deal with load balance. Then, three existing scheduling algorithms are introduced in detail: single queue scheduling, capacity scheduling, and fair scheduling. On this basis, an improved task scheduling strategy based on genetic algorithm is proposed to allocate and execute application tasks to reduce task completion time. The experiment verifies the effectiveness of the algorithm. The LBNP algorithm greatly improves the efficiency of reducing task execution and job execution. The delay capacity scheduling algorithm can ensure that most tasks can achieve localization scheduling, improve resource utilization, improve load balance, and speed up job completion time. Nowadays, imbalanced data classification is a hot topic in data mining and recently, several valuable researches have been conducted to overcome certain difficulties in the field. Moreover, those approaches, which are based on ensemble classifiers, have achieved reasonable results. Despite the success of these works, there are still many unsolved issues such as disregarding the importance of samples in balancing, determination of proper number of classifiers and optimizing weights of base classifiers in voting stage of ensemble methods. This paper intends to find an admissible solution for these challenges. The solution suggested in this paper applies the support vector data descriptor (SVDD) for sampling both minority and majority classes. After determining the optimal number of base classifiers, the selected samples are utilized to adjust base classifiers. Finally, genetic algorithm optimization is used in order to find the optimum weights of each base classifier in the voting stage. The proposed method is compared with some existing algorithms. In general, this paper focuses on finding the best configuration for PSO and GA, using the different migration blocks, as well as the different sets of the fuzzy systems rules. To achieve this goal, two optimization algorithms were configured in parallel to be able to integrate a migration block that allow us to generate diversity within the subpopulations used in each algorithm, which are: the particle swarm optimization (PSO) and the genetic algorithm (GA). This paper focuses on developing an appropriate combinatorial optimization technique for solving the optimal sizing problem of hybrid ac–dc microgrids. A novel two-stage iterative approach is proposed. In the first stage, a meta-heuristic technique based on a tailor-made genetic algorithm is used to tackle the optimal sizing problem, while, in the second, a non-linear solver is deployed to solve the operational problem subject to the obtained design/investment decisions. The proposed approach, being able to capture technical characteristics such as voltage and frequency through a detailed power flow algorithm, provides accurate solutions and, therefore, can address operational challenges of microgrids. Its capability to additionally capture contingencies ensures that the proposed sizing solutions are suitable both during normal operation and transient states. Finally, the genetic algorithm provides convergence of the model with relative computational simplicity. The proposed model is applied to a generalizable microgrid comprising of ac and dc generators and loads, as well as various types of storage technologies in order to demonstrate the benefits. Nowadays, people choose to travel in their leisure time more frequently, but fixed predetermined tour routes can barely meet people's personalized preferences. The needs of tourists are diverse, largely personal, and possibly have multiple constraints. The traditional single-objective route planning algorithm struggles to effectively deal with such problems. In this paper, a novel multi-objective and multi-constraint tour route recommendation method is proposed. Firstly, ArcMap was used to model the actual road network. Then, we created a new interest label matching method and a utility function scoring method based on crowd sensing, and constructed a personalized multi-constraint interest model. We present a variable neighborhood search algorithm and a hybrid particle swarm genetic optimization algorithm for recommending Top-K routes. Finally, we conducted extensive experiments on public datasets. Compared with the ATP route recommendation method based on an improved ant colony algorithm, our proposed method is superior in route score, interest abundance, number of POIs, and running time. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are considered a promising example of an automatic emergency task in a dynamic marine environment. However, the maritime communication performance between UAVs and offshore platforms has become a severe challenge. Due to the complex marine environment, the task allocation and route planning efficiency of multiple UAVs in an intelligent ocean are not satisfactory. To address these challenges, this paper proposes an intelligent marine task allocation and route planning scheme for multiple UAVs based on improved particle swarm optimization combined with a genetic algorithm (GA-PSO). Based on the simulation of an intelligent marine control system, the traditional particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is improved by introducing partial matching crossover and secondary transposition mutation. The improved GA-PSO is used to solve the random task allocation problem of multiple UAVs and the two-dimensional route planning of a single UAV. The simulation results show that compared with the traditional scheme, the proposed scheme can significantly improve the task allocation efficiency, and the navigation path planned by the proposed scheme is also optimal. This paper presents a novel method on the optimization of bi-objective Flexible Job-shop Scheduling Problem (FJSP) under stochastic processing times. The robust counterpart model and the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) are used to solve the bi-objective FJSP with consideration of the completion time and the total energy consumption under stochastic processing times. The case study on GM Corporation verifies that the NSGA-II used in this paper is effective and has advantages to solve the proposed model comparing with HPSO and PSO+SA. The idea and method of the paper can be generalized widely in the manufacturing industry, because it can reduce the energy consumption of the energy-intensive manufacturing enterprise with less investment when the new approach is applied in existing systems. In a preference-based multi-objective optimization task, the goal is to find a subset of the Pareto-optimal set close to a supplied set of aspiration points. The reference point based non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (R-NSGA-II) was proposed for such problem-solving tasks. R-NSGA-II aims to finding Pareto-optimal points close, in the sense of Euclidean distance in the objective space, to the supplied aspiration points, instead of finding the entire Pareto-optimal set. In this paper, R-NSGA-II method is modified using recently proposed Karush–Kuhn–Tucker proximity measure (KKTPM) and achievement scalarization function (ASF) metrics, instead of Euclidean distance metric. While a distance measure may not produce desired solutions, KKTPM-based distance measure allows a theoretically-convergent local or global Pareto solutions satisfying KKT optimality conditions and the ASF measure allows Pareto-compliant solutions to be found. A new technique for calculating KKTPM measure of a solution in the presence of an aspiration point is developed in this paper. Multiple sequence alignment (MSA) is a core problem in many applications. Various optimization algorithms such as genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization (PSO) have been used to solve this problem, where all of them are adapted to work in the bioinformatics domain. This paper defines the MSA problem, suggests a novel MSA algorithm called 'NestMSA' and evaluates it in two domains: Web data extraction and removing different URLs with similar text (DUST). The suggested algorithm is inspired by the PSO optimization algorithm. It is not a generalization of a two-sequence alignment algorithm as it processes all the sequences at the same time. Therefore, it looks globally at the same time on all sequences. Different from other PSO-based alignment algorithms, swarm particles in the proposed NestMSA algorithm are nested inside the sequences and communicated together to align them. Therefore, global maximum is guaranteed in our algorithm. Furthermore, this work suggests a new objective function which both maximizes the number of matched characters and minimizes the number of gaps inserted in the sequences. The running time complexity and the efficiency of NestMSA are addressed in this paper. The experiments show an encouraging result as it outperforms the two approaches DCA and TEX in the Web data extraction domain (95% and 96% of recall and precision, respectively). In the last decade a new variety of nature inspired optimization algorithms has been appeared. After the swarm based models, researchers turned their inspiration in nature phenomena and laws of science. In this way a new category of algorithms was born, equally effective or even sometimes superior to known algorithms for optimization problems, like genetic algorithms and swarm intelligence schemes. The present survey depicts the evolution of research on nature inspired optimization algorithms related to physical phenomena and laws of science and discusses the possibilities of using the presented approaches in a number of different applications. An attempt has been made to draw conclusions on what algorithm could be used in which different problem areas, for those approaches that this information could be extracted from the related papers studied. The paper also underlines the usage of this kind of nature inspired algorithms in industrial research problems, due to their better confrontation with optimization problems represented with nodes and edges. Space debris has become a great threat to space activities. We study and optimize space missions to remove multiple space debris. These missions are efficient and economical in stabilizing the orbital environment. In this paper, we propose an intelligent global optimization algorithm named the evolving elitist club algorithm (EECA), and we study its application in multiple debris removal missions. The crucial design element of EECA is the elitist club, which is a population created using ant colony optimization (ACO) and then evolved using genetic algorithm operators. We describe two types of multiple debris removal missions: 1) single spacecraft removal mission; and 2) multiple spacecraft removal mission. We optimize them using EECA. The proposed algorithm is compared with the conventional tree search method and other ACO algorithms. We show that EECA is more efficient than other algorithms. Furthermore, a time distribution (TD) EECA is proposed to handle time-dependent problems, and the time-continuous update mechanism of time-varying pheromone in TD EECA presents a novel idea for combinatorial-continuous problems. An optimal and smooth trajectory for industrial robots has a positive impact on reducing the execution time in an operation and the vibration in their joints. In this paper, a methodology for the time-optimal and jerk-continuous trajectory planning of industrial robots is proposed. The entire trajectory is interpolated in the joint space utilizing fifth-order B-splines and then optimized by a hybrid whale optimization algorithm and genetic algorithm (WOA-GA). Two objective functions, including the integral of the squared jerk along the entire trajectory and the total execution time, are minimized to obtain the optimal entire trajectory. A fifth-order B-spline interpolation technique enables the achievement of a jerk-continuous trajectory, while respecting the kinematic limits of jerk, acceleration and velocity. WOA-GA is utilized to solve the time-jerk optimal trajectory planning problem with nonlinear constraints. The proposed hybrid optimization algorithm yielded good results and achieved the time-jerk optimal trajectory better under kinematic constraints compared to the genetic algorithm, whale optimization algorithm, improved whale optimization algorithm with particle swarm optimization and adaptive cuckoo search algorithm. Consecutive-k-out-of-n (Con/k/n) system, a reconfigurable system, can improve the system performance by adjusting the redundancy and assignment of components. This paper aims to determine the optimal defensive strategy of Con/k/n systems under external risks. The defensive capability of Con/k/n systems is evaluated based on real-time system reliability, and a defensive importance measure (DIM) is constructed to optimize components’ redundancy locally. To solve the proposed optimization model effectively, a DIM-based genetic algorithm (DIGA) is developed by integrating the advantages of DIM’s local search with the global search ability of the classical genetic algorithm (CGA). The numerical experiment under 36 scenarios illustrates that DIGA is more effective than CGA verified by average defensive capability, robustness, and convergence generations. Moreover, the redundancy distribution analysis of Con/k/5 systems in the optimal defensive strategy shows that the redundancy of F(G) systems is in a spaced (continuous) way under spacing k-1 risk or continuous k risk. As compared with other optimization algorithms (e.g., genetic algorithm, ant colony algorithm, and particle swarm algorithm), FA is relatively simple to be realized. It does not require strict continuous and differentiable conditions, requires less prior knowledge. However, it still cannot effectively avoid slow convergence and poor stability. To optimize FA for the attraction model, a new FA with mean condition partial attraction is proposed (mcFA) in this paper. McFA, characterized by fast computing power, high precision, and easy implementation, is capable of remedying the defect that the FA is easy to converge slowly. As opposed to standard FA, mcFA has determined excellent model parameter values, and the mean condition partial attraction model is more suitable for different dimensional solutions than the full attraction model. Lastly, as verified by the theoretical and experimental results, mcFA outperforms other algorithms on most of the test functions. Aiming at the problems existing in the traditional teaching mode, this paper intelligently optimizes English teaching courses by using multidirectional mutation genetic algorithm and its optimization neural network method. Firstly, this paper gives the framework of intelligent English course optimization system based on multidirectional mutation genetic BP neural network and analyses the local optimization problems existing in the traditional BP algorithm. A BP neural network optimization algorithm based on multidirectional mutation genetic algorithm (MMGA-BP) is presented. Then, the multidirectional mutation genetic BPNN algorithm is applied to the intelligent optimization of English teaching courses. The simulation shows that the multidirectional mutation genetic BP neural network algorithm can solve the local optimization problem of traditional BP neural network. Finally, a control group and an experimental group are set up to verify the role of multidirectional mutation genetic algorithm and its optimization neural network in the intelligent optimization system of English teaching courses through the combination of summative and formative teaching evaluations. The data show that MMGA-BP algorithm can significantly improve the scores of academic students in English courses and has better teaching performance. The effect of vocabulary teaching under the guidance of MMGA-BP optimization theory is very significant, which plays a certain role in the intelligent curriculum optimization of the experimental class. Many problems today need the computing power that is only available by using large-scale parallel processing. For a significant number of these problems, the density of the global communications between the individual processors dominates the performance of the whole parallel implementation on a distributed memory multiprocessor system. In these cases, the design of the interconnection network for the processors is known to play a significant part in the efficient implementation of real problems. Important criteria to optimise the efficiency of a configuration are the maximum and average distance a message has lo travel between processors. Minimum path systems are irregular multiprocessor computer architectures which optimise these criteria. These architectures provide an efficient alternative to the more common regular topologies for solving real applications in parallel. This paper presents new results for two combinatorial problems that occur during the generation of these optimal irregular configurations. These are: (1) The design of the optimum interconnection network between the processors for configurations containing up to 128 processors. (2) The design of the routing tables to provide the optimal routing of messages within these irregular networks. The paper shows how these combinatorial problems have been solved, using genetic algorithms for the first problem and a random local search procedure for the second. The problem that passengers are hard to take taxis while empty driving rate is high widely exists under the traditional taxi operation mode. The implementation of taxi carpooling mode can alleviate the problem in a certain extent. The objective of this study is to optimize the taxi carpooling path. Firstly, the taxi carpooling path optimization model with single objective and its extended model with multiple objectives are built respectively. Then, the single objective path optimization model of taxi carpooling is solved based on the improved single objective genetic algorithm, and the multiple-objective path optimization model of taxi carpooling is solved based on the improved multiple-objective genetic algorithm. Finally, a case study is carried out based on a road network with 24 nodes. The case study results show the path optimization models and algorithms of taxi carpooling proposed in the paper can quickly get the taxi carpooling path, and can increase the income of taxi driver while reduce the cost for passengers. To perform air missions with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarm is a significant trend in warfare. The task assignment among the UAV swarm is one of the key issues in such missions. This paper proposes PSO-GA-DWPA (discrete wolf pack algorithm with the principles of particle swarm optimization and genetic algorithm) to solve the task assignment of a UAV swarm with fast convergence speed. The PSO-GA-DWPA is confirmed with three different ground-attack scenarios by experiments. The comparative results show that the improved algorithm not only converges faster than the original WPA and PSO, but it also exhibits excellent search quality in high-dimensional space. Scalable Video Coding (SVC) is a powerful solution to video application over heterogeneous networks and diversified end users. In the recent years, works mostly concentrate on transported layers or path for a single layer in the Software-Defined Network (SDN). This paper proposes the Novel Hybrid Optimization Algorithm for Scalable Video Coding (NHO-SVC) based on Genetic Algorithm to select the layer and path simultaneously. The algorithm uses the 0/1 knapsack programming model to set up the model, predicts the network states by the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average Model (ARIMA), and then, makes decision based on Genetic Algorithm. Stochastic simulation is beneficial when evaluating the performance of a complex system. When optimizing the system performance with the simulation, we need to make a final decision by considering various qualitative criteria neglected by the simulation as well as the simulation results. However, as simulations are expensive and time-consuming, in this paper, we propose a ranking and selection algorithm to make such optimization with the simulation efficient. The proposed algorithm selects a best-subset of designs expected to optimize the system performance from a finite set of alternatives. Furthermore, the algorithm identifies the ranking of designs within the subset. To maximize the accuracy of the selection under limited simulation resources, the algorithm selectively and gradually increases the precision of the sample mean of each design by allocating the resources heuristically based on the evaluated uncertainty. The selected subset allows decision makers to efficiently choose the best design that optimizes the performance while satisfying the qualitative criteria. The portfolio optimization problem is the central problem of modern economics and decision theory; there is the Mean-Variance Model and Stochastic Dominance Model for solving this problem. In this paper, based on the second order stochastic dominance constraints, we propose the improved biogeography-based optimization algorithm to optimize the portfolio, which we called #BBO. In order to test the computing power of #BBO, we carry out two numerical experiments in several kinds of constraints. In experiment 1, comparing the Stochastic Approximation (SA) method with the Level Function (LF) algorithm and Genetic Algorithm (GA), we get a similar optimal solution by #BBO in [0, 0.6] and [0, 1] constraints with the return of 1.174% and 1.178%. In [-1, 2] constraint, we get the optimal return of 1.3043% by #BBO, while the return of SA and LF is 1.23% and 1.26%. In experiment 2, we get the optimal return of 0.1325% and 0.3197% by #BBO in [0, 0.1] and [-0.05, 0.15] constraints. As a comparison, the return of FTSE100 Index portfolio is 0.0937%. The results prove that #BBO algorithm has great potential in the field of financial decision-making, it also shows that #BBO algorithm has a better performance in optimization problem. Combinatorial test design is a plan of test that aims to reduce the amount of test cases systematically by choosing a subset of the test cases based on the combination of input variables. The subset covers all possible combinations of a given strength and hence tries to match the effectiveness of the exhaustive set. This mechanism of reduction has been used successfully in software testing research with t-way testing (where t indicates the interaction strength of combinations). Potentially, other systems may exhibit many similarities with this approach. Hence, it could form an emerging application in different areas of research due to its usefulness. To this end, more recently it has been applied in a few research areas successfully. In this paper, we explore the applicability of combinatorial test design technique for Fractional Order (FO), Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) parameter design controller, named as FOPID, for an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) system. Throughout the paper, we justify this new application theoretically and practically through simulations. In addition, we report on first experiments indicating its practical use in this field. We design different algorithms and adapted other strategies to cover all the combinations with an optimum and effective test set. Our findings indicate that combinatorial test design can find the combinations that lead to optimum design. Besides this, we also found that by increasing the strength of combination, we can approach to the optimum design in a way that with only 4-way combinatorial set, we can get the effectiveness of an exhaustive test set. Effect-based weapon–target pairing assigns weapons to targets for the given desired effects on such targets. The most obvious and natural effects on targets are represented by the percentages of damage of these targets. In this paper, we focus on the generation of input for effect-based weapon–target pairing optimization. One way to generate such input is based on the Joint Munition Effectiveness Manual (JMEM). JMEM allows the evaluation of the weapons. It is a database that contains many tables, and each table contains many different data fields. Because of the sheer size of JMEM, the optimization of weapon–target pairing based on JMEM is currently focused mainly on one target at a time. In other words, the optimization of weapon–target pairing for many targets and weapons is not directly supported by JMEM, although all the necessary data is there. In this paper, we derive an input based on the given JMEM and desired effect(s), which should be useful in the follow-on effect-based weapon–target pairing optimization that is not limited to a single weapon or target. In particular, effect-based weapon–target pairing will rely on the scanning of the attack guidance table that we derive from JMEM to determine a preferred set of weapon combinations for engaging a given set of targets. In this paper, the optimization of cutting parameters for constrained machining operations is reported. Modified genetic algorithm (MGA) is an evolutionary computation technique that has been proposed in this paper to solve the machining problem. Additional constraints have been incorporated to the multipass turning model. The optimization of drilling and facing parameters have also been carried out. This paper presents the evolution of combinational logic circuits by a new hybrid algorithm known as the Differential Evolution Particle Swarm Optimization (DEPSO), formulated from the concepts of a modified particle swarm and differential evolution. The particle swarm in the hybrid algorithm is represented by a discrete 3-integer approach. A hybrid multi-objective fitness function is coined to achieve two goals for the evolution of circuits. The first goal is to evolve combinational logic circuits with 100% functionality, called the feasible circuits. The second goal is to minimize the number of logic gates needed to realize the feasible circuits. In addition, the paper presents modifications to enhance performance and robustness of particle swarm and evolutionary techniques for discrete optimization problems. Comparison of the performance of the hybrid algorithm to the conventional Karnaugh map and evolvable hardware techniques such as genetic algorithm, modified particle swarm, and differential evolution are presented on a number of case studies. Results show that feasible circuits are always achieved by the DEPSO algorithm unlike with other algorithms and the percentage of best solutions (minimal logic gates) is higher. Information carried by an image can be distorted due to different image processing steps introduced by different electronic means of storage and communication. Therefore, development of algorithms which can automatically assess a quality of the image in a way that is consistent with human evaluation is important. In this paper, an approach to image quality assessment (IQA) is proposed in which the quality of a given image is evaluated jointly by several IQA approaches. At first, in order to obtain such joint models, an optimisation problem of IQA measures aggregation is defined, where a weighted sum of their outputs, i.e., objective scores, is used as the aggregation operator. Then, the weight of each measure is considered as a decision variable in a problem of minimisation of root mean square error between obtained objective scores and subjective scores. Subjective scores reflect ground-truth and involve evaluation of images by human observers. The optimisation problem is solved using a genetic algorithm, which also selects suitable measures used in aggregation. Obtained multimeasures are evaluated on four largest widely used image benchmarks and compared against state-of-the-art full-reference IQA approaches. The switched reluctance machine (SRM) design is different from the design of most of other machines. SRM has many design parameters that have non-linear relationships with the performance indices (i.e., average torque, efficiency, and so forth). Hence, it is difficult to design SRM using straight forward equations with iterative methods, which is common for other machines. Optimization techniques are used to overcome this challenge by searching for the best variables values within the search area. In this paper, the optimization of SRM design is achieved using multi-objective Jaya algorithm (MO-Jaya). In the Jaya algorithm, solutions are moved closer to the best solution and away from the worst solution. Hence, a good intensification of the search process is achieved. Moreover, the randomly changed parameters achieve good search diversity. In this paper, it is suggested to also randomly change best and worst solutions. Hence, better diversity is achieved, as indicated from results. The optimization with the MO-Jaya algorithm was made for 8/6 and 6/4 SRM. Objectives used are the average torque, efficiency, and iron weight. The results of MO-Jaya are compared with the results of the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) for the same conditions and constraints. The optimization program is made in Lua programming language and executed by FEMM4.2 software. In order to obtain a good optimization method for the electrical transformer design with optimal selection of parameters, performance evaluation of three evolutionary algorithms (EAs), namely, genetic algorithm (GA), differential evolution algorithm, and nondominated sorting GA (NSGA-II), is carried out. The aim of this paper is to optimize parameters of transformer design (core thicknesses, primary-turn number, secondary-turn number, primary conductor area, and secondary conductor area) for minimization of total power losses (no-load losses and load losses) in three-phase transformer topology while maintaining high efficiency and low cost. The method used for this optimization scheme combines the finite-element method (FEM) and EAs to provide an accurate selection of parameters together with the optimized magnetic flux density and decreased loss. Experimental results show that NSGA-II+FEM model successfully provides a global feasible solution by minimizing total loss and related cost while improving the efficiency of three-phase transformer, rendering it suitable for application in the design environment of industrial transformers. In this paper, we present a parallel hybrid metaheuristic that combines the strengths of the particle swarm optimization (PSO) and the genetic algorithm (GA) to produce an improved path-planner algorithm for fixed wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The proposed solution uses a multi-objective cost function we developed and generates in real-time feasible and quasi-optimal trajectories in complex 3D environments. Our parallel hybrid algorithm simulates multiple GA populations and PSO swarms in parallel while allowing migration of solutions. This collaboration between the GA and the PSO leads to an algorithm that exhibits the strengths of both optimization methods and produces superior solutions. Moreover, by using the "single-program, multiple-data" parallel programming paradigm, we maximize the use of today's multicore CPU and significantly reduce the execution time of the parallel program compared to a sequential implementation. We observed a quasi-linear speedup of 10.7 times faster on a 12-core shared memory system resulting in an execution time of 5 s which allows in-flight planning. Finally, we show with statistical significance that our parallel hybrid algorithm produces superior trajectories to the parallel GA or the parallel PSO we previously developed. This paper addresses the problem of makespan minimization on unrelated parallel machines with sequence dependent setup times. The symbiotic organisms search (SOS) algorithm is a new and popular global optimization technique that has received wide acceptance in recent years from researchers in continuous and discrete optimization domains. An improved SOS algorithm is developed to solve the parallel machine scheduling problem. Since the standard SOS algorithm was originally developed to solve continuous optimization problems, a new solution representation and decoding procedure is designed to make the SOS algorithm suitable for the unrelated parallel machine scheduling problem (UPMSP). Similarly, to enhance the solution quality of the SOS algorithm, an iterated local search strategy based on combining variable numbers of insertion and swap moves is incorporated into the SOS algorithm. More so, to further improve the SOS optimization speed and performance, the longest processing time first (LPT) rule is used to design a machine assignment heuristic that assigns processing machines to jobs based on the machine dynamic load-balancing mechanism. Subsequently, the machine assignment scheme is incorporated into SOS algorithms and used to solve the UPMSP. The performances of the proposed methods are evaluated by comparing their solutions with other existing techniques from the literature. A number of statistical tests were also conducted to determine the variations in performance for each of the techniques. The experimental results showed that the SOS with LPT (SOS-LPT) heuristic has the best performance compared to other tested method, which is closely followed by SOS algorithm, indicating that the two proposed algorithms’ solution approaches are reasonable and effective for solving large-scale UPMSPs. The vehicle routing problem (VRP) has a wide range of applications in the field of logistics distribution. In order to reduce the cost of logistics distribution, the distance-constrained and capacitated VRP with split deliveries by order (DCVRPSDO) was studied. We show that the customer demand, which can’t be split in the classical VRP model, can only be discrete split deliveries by order. A model of double objective programming is constructed by taking the minimum number of vehicles used and minimum vehicle traveling cost as the first and the second objective, respectively. This approach contains a series of constraints, such as single depot, single vehicle type, distance-constrained and load capacity limit, split delivery by order, etc. DCVRPSDO is a new type of VRP. A new tabu search algorithm is designed to solve the problem and the examples testing show the efficiency of the proposed algorithm. This paper focuses on constructing a double objective mathematical programming model for DCVRPSDO and designing an adaptive tabu search algorithm (ATSA) with good performance to solving the problem. The performance of the ATSA is improved by adding some strategies into the search process, including: (a) a strategy of discrete split deliveries by order is used to split the customer demand; (b) a multi-neighborhood structure is designed to enhance the ability of global optimization; (c) two levels of evaluation objectives are set to select the current solution and the best solution; (d) a discriminating strategy of that the best solution must be feasible and the current solution can accept some infeasible solution, helps to balance the performance of the solution and the diversity of the neighborhood solution; (e) an adaptive penalty mechanism will help the candidate solution be closer to the neighborhood of feasible solution; (f) a strategy of tabu releasing is used to transfer the current solution into a new neighborhood of the better solution. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm—parallel adaptive quantum genetic algorithm—which can rapidly determine the minimum control nodes of arbitrary networks with both control nodes and state nodes. The corresponding network can be fully controlled with the obtained control scheme. We transformed the network controllability issue into a combinational optimization problem based on the Popov-Belevitch-Hautus rank condition. A set of canonical networks and a list of real-world networks were experimented. Comparison results demonstrated that the algorithm was more ideal to optimize the controllability of networks, especially those larger-size networks. We demonstrated subsequently that there were links between the optimal control nodes and some network statistical characteristics. The proposed algorithm provides an effective approach to improve the controllability optimization of large networks or even extra-large networks with hundreds of thousands nodes. A high-directivity patch antenna with broadside directivity is attractive, since a narrow beam can be obtained without the need of using an array of antennas. Therefore, the solution becomes simpler as there is no need for a complicated feeding network. In this sense, this paper presents a novel patch antenna design with high directivity in the broadside direction by using genetic algorithms (GA). The proposed GA method divides the overall patch area into different cells taking into account that cells have a small overlap area between them. This avoids optimized geometries where cells have only an infinitesimal connection. Therefore, the proposed method is robust for manufacturing. The antenna operates in a higher-order mode at 4.12GHz and the geometry fits inside a patch of 40mm x 40mm on a substrate with a relative permittivity of 3.38 and a thickness of 1.52mm resulting in a directivity of 10.5 dBi. The specialty of this design is the use of GA to select the optimized shape and the feeding position instead of a known shape and a fixed feeding position. The antenna has been fabricated and the simulation results are in good agreement with the measurements. In this paper an effective method has been proposed for designing optimal multiple tuned mass dampers (MTMDs) to mitigate the seismic response of structures based on defining an optimization problem which considers the parameters of tuned mass dampers (TMDs) as variables and minimization of maximum structural response as an objective function while a number of constraints have been applied on TMDs response and parameters. The genetic algorithm (GA) has been used successfully for solving the optimization problem. For illustration, for a ten-story linear shear frame subjected to a filtered white noise excitation optimal MTMDs have been designed. The results have shown the simplicity and convergence behavior of the method. It has also been concluded that the performance of MTMDs depends on TMDs mass ratio, TMDs configuration and design criteria where increasing the TMDs mass ratio has improved monotonously the performance of MTMDs especially for the domain of smaller values of the mass ratio, while for this case study the number of TMDs has not been more effective. Testing the optimal MTMDs under near-field and far-field earthquakes shows that the performance of MTMDs has been influenced by input excitation. This paper presents a procedure to identify the damage of multistory shear structure from sparse modal information. Practically, it is difficult and expensive to measure modal response at many locations. A method has been proposed to compute the full modal information of a particular mode simply by knowing the frequency value of that mode. Then the concept of the residual force vector along with genetic algorithm has been implemented to get the location and extent of damage. Frequencies at different number of modes with and without corresponding partial mode shape is used as input to the model and results are compared to find out minimum number of modal information and their locations required for the best result. Experimental data are simulated numerically by solving eigen value problem of the damaged structure with inclusion of random noise on the vibration characteristics. Reliability of the procedure has been shown by various examples of multistory structure with different damaged situations. This paper presents parameter and topology optimization of inductor shapes using evolutionary algorithms. The goal of the optimization is to reduce the size of inductors satisfying the specifications on inductance values under weak and strong bias-current conditions. The inductance values are computed from the finite-element (FE) method taking magnetic saturation into account. The result of the parameter optimization, which leads to significant reduction in the volume, is realized for test, and the dependence of inductance on bias currents is experimentally measured, which is shown to agree well with the computed values. Considering alternative machines for operations, forbidden intervals during which machines cannot be available and a job’s batch size greater than one in the real manufacturing environment, this paper studies the batch splitting scheduling problem on alternative machines with forbidden intervals, based on the objective to minimize the makespan. A scheduling model is established, taking before-arrival set-up, processing, and transfer time into account. And a new hybrid parallel algorithm, based on differential evolution and genetic algorithm, is brought forward to solve both the batch splitting problem and the batch scheduling problem by assuming a common number of sub-batches in advance. A solution consists of the actual optimum number of sub-batches for each job, the optimum batch size for each sub-batch, and the optimum sequence of operations for these sub-batches. Experiments on the performance of the proposed algorithm under different common numbers of sub-batches are carried out. Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) aims to balance two extreme sides (i.e., Corrective Maintenance (CM), and Preventive Maintenance (PM)) by observing and forecasting the real time health of machines. Recent developments in CBM revealed promising technologies for advanced fault detection, and forecasting. Traditional maintenance scheduling in CBM is based on the threshold setting on forecasted failure probability, or remaining useful life (RUL) for individual components. However, this approach may not give the best result for the system, because individual components are inter-related, and mutually dependent. It is not uncommon in systems that turning off a machine due to failure or maintenance causes other machinery or components to be turned off. Designing a comprehensive tool that optimizes availability & cost of the whole system incorporating prognostics information is crucial to fully benefit from CBM. The goal of this paper is to emphasize this need by demonstrating scenarios in CM, PM, and CBM; and to present a solution that optimizes system availability, and cost with system-maintenance constraints using genetic algorithms. The proposed tool acquires the forecasted failure probability of individual components from the prognostics module, and their reliability expectations after maintenance. The tradeoff between maintenance & failure is quantified in risk as the objective function to be minimized. The risk is minimized utilizing genetic algorithms for the whole system rather than individual components. In power distribution networks the load varies within any given time frame. It may, therefore, seem that a good approach to reduce losses would be the solving of a network reconfiguration problem to suit each of the significant load variations. However, frequent changes in configuration can trigger outages or cause transient problems; they are best avoided. A recent formulation of this problem explicitly considers load variations and proposes to restrain frequent reconfigurations by assuming that network topologies will remain unchanged for a given planning period. This formulation leads to a much larger optimization problem than that traditionally used for network reconfiguration; moreover, it requires a new approach to optimization which is capable of dealing with energy flows instead of only instantaneous power flows. Such an approach is proposed in this paper, which discusses the design of an adaptive hybrid genetic algorithm that fulfills these new requirements. Key concepts in evolutionary computation and analysis of distribution systems are explored to develop this new algorithm. Application to real case studies certifies its benefits. This paper presents a new approach for the visual localization, detection, and classification of various nonstationary power signals using a variety of windowing techniques. Among the various windows used earlier like sine, cosine, tangent, hyperbolic tangent, Gaussian, bi-Gaussian, and complex, the modified Gaussian window is found to provide excellent normalized frequency contours of the power signal disturbances suitable for accurate detection, localization, and classification. Various nonstationary power signals are processed through the generalized S-transform with modified Gaussian window to generate time-frequency contours for extracting relevant features for pattern classification. The extracted features are clustered using fuzzy C-means algorithm, and finally, the algorithm is extended using either particle swarm optimization or genetic algorithm to refine the cluster centers. The application of evolutionary computation methods in search and optimization has been growing over the past few decades. As a promising approach in metaheuristic optimization algorithms, differential evolution (DE) has been attracting increasing attention for wide engineering applications including power engineering. Different from conventional evolutionary algorithms using predefined probability distribution function for mutation process, differential evolution exploits the differences of randomly sampled pairs of objective vectors for its mutation process. Consequently the variation between vectors will outfit the objective functions topographical information toward the optimization process, and therefore provides efficient global optimization capability. However, although DE is shown to be precise, fast as well as robust, its search efficiency will be impaired during solution process with fast descending diversity of population. In this paper, detailed numerical studies are carried out to propose the characterization of the performance of several DE mutation methods with and without fitness sharing scheme. In distribution systems, network reconfiguration and capacitor control, generally, are used to reduce real power losses and to improve voltage profiles. Since both capacitor control and network reconfiguration belong to the complicated combinatorial optimization problems, it is hard to combine them efficiently for better optimization results. In this paper, a joint optimization algorithm of combining network reconfiguration and capacitor control is proposed for loss reduction in distribution systems. To achieve high performance and high efficiency of the proposed algorithm, an improved adaptive genetic algorithm (IAGA) is developed to optimize capacitor switching, and a simplified branch exchange algorithm is developed to find the optimal network structure for each genetic instance at each iteration of capacitor optimization algorithm. In this paper we address the problem of automatically computing a set of views over a simulated three dimensional environment. The viewing system aims at, for each moment, supplying the user with the most pertinent information in order to allow a good understanding of the evolving environment. Our approach relies on an innovative optimization architecture that enables intelligent optimization techniques based on simulated annealing and genetic algorithms. Reported experiments were performed in urban rescue scenarios from the RoboCup Rescue Domain. We outline the possible extension of the proposed architecture to other visualization problems and argue on how several problems within the fields of Visualization and Rendering can benefit from it. This paper proposes a hybrid approach for the design of adaptive fuzzy controllers (FCs) in which two learning algorithms with different characteristics are merged together to obtain an improved method. The approach combines a genetic algorithm (GA), devised to optimize all the configuration parameters of the FC, including the number of membership functions and rules, and a Lyapunov-based adaptation law performing a local tuning of the output singletons of the controller, and guaranteeing the stability of each new controller investigated by the GA. Substation expansion planning (SEP), as a major module of power system planning modules, is addressed in this paper. For long-term transmission SEP, a new approach based on a genetic algorithm (GA) optimization tool is proposed, in which by defining appropriate objective function and various constraints, new as well as expansion of existing substation requirements are determined. In this paper, a hybrid Taguchi-genetic algorithm (HTGA) is applied to solve the problem of tuning both network structure and parameters of a feedforward neural network. The HTGA approach is a method of combining the traditional genetic algorithm (TGA), which has a powerful global exploration capability, with the Taguchi method, which can exploit the optimum offspring. The Taguchi method is inserted between crossover and mutation operations of a TGA. Then, the systematic reasoning ability of the Taguchi method is incorporated in the crossover operations to select the better genes to achieve crossover, and consequently enhance the genetic algorithms. Therefore, the HTGA approach can be more robust, statistically sound, and quickly convergent. First, the authors evaluate the performance of the presented HTGA approach by studying some global numerical optimization problems. Then, the presented HTGA approach is effectively applied to solve three examples on forecasting the sunspot numbers, tuning the associative memory, and solving the XOR problem. The numbers of hidden nodes and the links of the feedforward neural network are chosen by increasing them from small numbers until the learning performance is good enough. As a result, a partially connected feedforward neural network can be obtained after tuning. This implies that the cost of implementation of the neural network can be reduced. In these studied problems of tuning both network structure and parameters of a feedforward neural network, there are many parameters and numerous local optima so that these studied problems are challenging enough for evaluating the performances of any proposed GA-based approaches.
