The paper presents a technique for determining the time index of growth of the slope of reverse voltage for double insulated cables, based on the body of the theory of series. It is proved that in the vicinity of the extremum point (maximum) the function of the reverse voltage is approximated by polynomials of the nth power. It is proposed to use second-degree polynomials for practical calculations. The method for calculating relevant indicators is illustrated using real data. Analysis of deviations made it possible to conclude that the calculation method proposed in the paper is far more accurate. In the final part of the study, it was concluded that there is a promising outlook for further development of methodological guidelines for determining complex indices of the remaining life of the cable, including but not limited to the use of various mathematical methods. Background: In 2020, our group published physical therapy clinical practice guidelines (CPG) for people with Huntington's disease (HD). The guideline recommendations were categorized according to six primary movement impairment classifications. Objective: To facilitate implementation of this CPG, we have developed guideline-based algorithms for physical therapy assessments and interventions and recommendations for therapists to overcome barriers to CPG implementation for people with HD. Methods: We conducted a literature review of papers that evaluated physical therapy interventions in individuals with HD (n = 26) to identify assessments for each of the primary movement impairment classifications, and then searched for papers (n = 28) that reported their clinometric/psychometric properties in HD. Assessments were evaluated using modified Movement Disorder Society Committee on Rating Scales criteria and other relevant criteria. Results: We identified a "core set" of physical therapy assessments for persons with HD, including the Six Minute Walk Test, Timed Up and Go Test, Berg Balance Scale, and the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form 36 (SF-36). We then developed guideline-based decision trees to assist in decision making and implementation of the CPG into practice for persons with HD across the continuum of care. Finally, we developed strategies for overcoming barriers to implementation, such as seeking specialized training in HD, engaging caretakers or family members to help the person with HD to exercise, and establishing clinical pathways that support early physical therapy referrals. This paper elaborates on the ranked nodes method (RNM) that is used for constructing conditional probability tables (CPTs) for Bayesian networks consisting of a class of nodes called ranked nodes. Such nodes typically represent continuous quantities that lack well-established interval scales and are hence expressed by ordinal scales. Based on expert elicitation, the CPT of a child node is generated in RNM by aggregating weighted states of parent nodes with a weight expression. RNM is also applied to nodes that are expressed by interval scales. However, the use of the method in this way may be ineffective due to challenges which are not addressed in the existing literature but are demonstrated through an illustrative example in this paper. To overcome the challenges, the paper introduces a novel approach that facilitates the use of RNM. It consists of guidelines concerning the discretization of the interval scales into ordinal ones and the determination of a weight expression and weights based on assessments of the expert about the mode of the child node. The determination is premised on interpretations and feasibility conditions of the weights derived in the paper. INTRODUCTION Although a number of articles offering advice for early career researchers have been published, no systematic review has summarized the available recommendations. This study aimed to enhance young researchers by reviewing the literature and providing a comprehensive set of tips and advice, applicable to a broad range of scientific fields. METHODS The systematic review was performed in PubMed database. Relevant articles published from 1 January 1990 to 31 December 2020 were located according to a comprehensive search algorithm. Inclusion criteria were English language, articles containing clearly formed recommendations, and articles including recommendations that could be utilized by researchers working in a broad range of disciplines. The search algorithm provided 62 articles. From those, 18 fulfilled the chosen criteria and were included in the review. One further publication was added that did not emerge from the search algorithm but came up according to the snowballing approach. RESULTS In total, 208 advice suggestions ('tips') emerged from the studied articles. Upon classification they were categorized into five broad thematic groups: 'Funding and research proposal writing' (26 tips), 'Mentorship, networking and collaboration (25 tips), 'Enhancing visibility as a researcher' (28 tips), 'Writing and publishing a journal article' (43 tips), and 'Personal and professional development' (86 tips). CONCLUSIONS This is the first systematic review summarizing useful recommendations for young researchers with regard to initiating, conducting and promoting their scientific work and career. The provided guidelines form a valuable and easy to read tool that can inspire and encourage young researchers in building a successful scientific career while avoiding common pitfalls. SUMMARY Randomized algorithms are widely used to address many types of software engineering problems, especially in the area of software verification and validation with a strong emphasis on test automation. However, randomized algorithms are affected by chance and so require the use of appropriate statistical tests to be properly analysed in a sound manner. This paper features a systematic review regarding recent publications in 2009 and 2010 showing that, overall, empirical analyses involving randomized algorithms in software engineering tend to not properly account for the random nature of these algorithms. Many of the novel techniques presented clearly appear promising, but the lack of soundness in their empirical evaluations casts unfortunate doubts on their actual usefulness. In software engineering, although there are guidelines on how to carry out empirical analyses involving human subjects, those guidelines are not directly and fully applicable to randomized algorithms. Furthermore, many of the textbooks on statistical analysis are written from the viewpoints of social and natural sciences, which present different challenges from randomized algorithms. To address the questionable overall quality of the empirical analyses reported in the systematic review, this paper provides guidelines on how to carry out and properly analyse randomized algorithms applied to solve software engineering tasks, with a particular focus on software testing, which is by far the most frequent application area of randomized algorithms within software engineering. In recent years, vehicle detectors built on deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) have been widely used in autonomous driving. Under the complex conditions of road traffic, the detector is expected to run in high speed and high accuracy. However, due to the limited computing power and storage space on the autonomous vehicle, the deployment of advanced DCNN detectors is often restricted. The design of lightweight and powerful detectors is in a great desire. Recently, group convolution, as a novel convolution algorithm, has been proposed to reduce the floating-point operations and make the detection network lighter and faster. However, in practice, it is found that the increase of group number does not always boost the detection speed, but sometimes leads to the performance degradation. In addition, the existing guidelines for network design do not indicate how to choose the group number in the group convolution in order to maximize the overall detection speed. To this end, in this paper, we propose three new guidelines to determine the valid range of the group number, and design a lightweight detection network—DenseLightNet—based on these new design criteria. The anti-islanding algorithm proposed by the Sandia National Laboratories is analyzed in this study because this scheme, also known as the Sandia scheme, is considered to be effective in detecting islanding of distributed generation systems. Previously, other than heuristic approaches, there has not been any quantitative analysis for tuning the control gains of the algorithm based on the power rating and bandwidth of the distributed generation (DG) power converter. The paper interprets the components of the algorithm that affect the voltage magnitude and frequency into block diagrams that can be linearized and studied using continuous time approximations, This paper uses frequency domain approach to analyze the range for the gains required by anti-islanding algorithm to effectively determine the disconnection of the mains grid within an acceptable time duration. The analysis provides guidelines for using the Sandia's schemes under different application conditions. The results are validated using detailed time domain DG and power system simulations. Sensor nodes deployed outdoors are subject to environmental detriments and often need to cache data for an extended period of time. This paper introduces sensor nodes which are robust to environmental damages, and proposes to utilize Network Coding to back up data in the robust sensors for future data retrieval in an energy efficient way. Our goal is to help regular sensors select robust sensors to back up their data with low energy consumption, such that when needed, all the data can be retrieved by querying only a subset of robust sensors. We formally formulate this backup problem, theoretically prove its NP-Completeness, discover two novel theoretical guidelines for problem solving, and propose two algorithms accordingly to tackle this NP-C problem. The guidelines are based on random linear network coding and provide lower bounds of the number of robust sensors that each regular sensor should choose for data backup, such that the required fault tolerance is provided. A centralized algorithm and a distributed algorithm are developed based on the guidelines such that regular sensors can back up their data efficiently. In 2019, after Delphi consultation and on-site discussion, the international expert team formed an international consensus on the management algorithm of traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients with intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring. The consensus aims to guide the implementation of reasonable tiered clinical treatment for patients with TBI who only underwent ICP monitoring. In this paper, the consensus involved in the tiered management process of intracranial hypertension monitoring and the judgment process of withdrawing ICP monitoring and sedation holiday were interpreted, in order to introduce the progress in the field of TBI to the readers. With the increasing point densities provided by airborne laser scanner (ALS) data the requirements on derived products also increase. One major application of ALS data is to provide input for 3D city models. Modeling of roof faces, (3D) road and terrain surfaces can partially be done in an automated manner, although many such approaches are still in a development stage. Problems in automatic building reconstruction lie in the dynamic area between assumptions and reality. Not every object in the data appears as the algorithm expects. Challenges are to detect areas that cannot be reconstructed automatically. This paper describes our contribution to the field of building reconstruction by proposing a target based graph matching approach that can handle both complete and incomplete laser data. Match results describe which target objects appear topologically in the data. Complete match results can be reconstructed in an automated manner. Quality parameters store information on how the model fits to the input data and which data has not been used. Areas where laser data only partly matches with target objects are detected automatically. Four datasets are analyzed in order to describe the quality of the automatically reconstructed roofs, and to point out the reasons why segments are left out from the automatic reconstruction. The reasons why these areas are left out include lack of data information and limitations of our initial target objects. This paper presents an ontology maintenance approach aiming at dynamically maintaining the federation collaboration ontology in High Level Architecture (HLA) federation development and execution process, with the objective to provide guidelines on how to use, organize and manipulate federation collaboration ontology to meet various requirements. The proposed approach includes two algorithms: ontology maintenance (+) and ontology maintenance (-), corresponding to federate joining and resigning. It adopts an axiom-based deduction strategy and takes heavy-weighted ontologies into consideration. It can find all the explicit and derived inter-ontology relations. A case study shows that the proposed approach has great potential to improve the efficiency of federation development and execution processes, reduce the workload for adaptive adjustment of existing platforms, and enhance the applicability and flexibility of HLA based collaborative product development systems. An innovative synthesis procedure to design sub-arrayed antennas affording multiple patterns is presented in this paper. The approach is based on an excitation matching procedure aimed at generating one optimal pattern and multiple compromises close as much as possible to user-defined reference beams. A suitable modification of the K-means clustering algorithm integrated into a customized version of the contiguous partition method is used to efficiently sample the solution space looking for the best compromise excitations. Intensive insulin therapy in type 1 diabetes is based on the well-established practice of adjusting basal and bolus insulin independently. Basal insulin delivery is designed to optimize glucose concentrations between meals and overnight, while bolus insulin delivery is designed to optimize postprandial glucose concentrations. However, this strategy shows some limitations in the postprandial glucose control, especially for meals with high carbohydrate content. Strategies based on coordinating basal and bolus insulin in the postprandial period help in overcoming these limitations. An algorithm, based on mathematically guaranteed techniques (interval analysis), is presented in this paper. It determines, given the current glycemic state of the patient and the meal to be ingested, a basal–bolus combination that will yield a tight postprandial glycemic control according to the International Diabetes Federation guidelines. For a given meal, the algorithm reveals which bolus administration mode will enable a good postprandial performance: standard, square-wave, dual-wave, or temporal basal decrement. The algorithm is validated through an in silico study using the 30 subjects in the educational version of the Food and Drug Administration accepted University of Virginia simulator. The authors propose two variants of lexicographic preference rules. They obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions under which a linear utility function represents a standard lexicographic rule, and each of the proposed variants, over a set of discrete attributes. They then: (i) characterize tile measurement properties of the parameters in the representations; (ii) propose a nonmetric procedure for inferring each lexicographic rule from pairwise comparisons of multiattribute alternatives; (iii) describe a method for distinguishing among different lexicographic rules, and between lexicographic and linear preference models; and (iv) suggest how individual lexicographic rules can be combined to describe hierarchical market structures. The authors illustrate each of these aspects using data on personal-computer preferences. They find that two-thirds of the subjects in the sample use some kind of lexicographic rule. In contrast, only one in five subjects use a standard lexicographic rule. This suggests that lexicographic rules are more widely used by consumers than one might have thought in the absence of the lexicographic variants described in the paper. This paper addresses a scheduling problem for a two stage hybrid flowshop (HFS) environment with significant processing flexibility across stages. A job can be either completely processed at one of the stages or its processing is split in a prespecified fashion between stages. For the latter case, the routing is only in one direction, from the 'upstream' stage to the 'downstream' stage. A stage may consist of one or more parallel identical machines. We first study the special case of a single machine per stage and present a pseudopolynomial dynamic programming algorithm to minimize makespan. Then, we provide a heuristic for the HFSm[sub1],m[sub2] problem with m[subk] machines at stage k = 1,2, and prove its worst case and average performance. Also, we extend our algorithms to the case of stage dependent processing times. Finally, we report computational results on the average performance of HFSm[sub1],m[sub2] with comparable flowshop and parallel machine environments, and provide managerial guidelines for process choice decisions. Having a method for analyzing and designing regulators of controls that contain many current loops such as active filters is not a trivial task. There can be many parameters of regulators and filters that must be carefully selected in order to fulfill certain desired requirements. For instance, these can be stability, dynamic response, robustness under uncertainty of parameters, and rejection capability to switching harmonics. Hence, this paper provides general analysis guidelines for designing current control loops by using mathematical models in an αβ reference frame. Then, by using the proposed modeling tool, a multi-objective tuning algorithm is proposed that helps obtain all the control loops' regulator and filter parameters, meeting all the desired requirements. Thus, the proposed analysis and design methodology is illustrated by applying it to three different controls conceived in a dq rotating reference frame with PI (Proportional Integral) regulators. The first control presents two current loops (simple dq current control), the second control uses four current loops (dual vector control, for unbalanced loads), while the third control presents eight current loops (active filter controlling current harmonics). Several experimental and simulation results show the effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed method. Since the mathematical model employed is in the αβ reference frame, it can also be easily applied to controls conceived in a αβ reference frame using resonant regulators, providing also a common comparative framework. Improving the safety and quality of health care relies on implementing evidence-based findings into every-day clinical practice. Numerous clinical decision aids have been developed to guide nursing care of the patient with a peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC), including standards, guidelines, decision frameworks, bundles, policies, procedures, algorithms, pathways, checklists and scoring tools. While all are created with the intention of facilitating the delivery of safe, effective nursing care and improving patient outcomes, there are distinct differences in methodology and design between them, and many are based on expert opinion and historical practice rather than high-quality evidence. This paper reviews the types of decision aids for daily PIVC assessment and management, explores the evidence base underpinning them, and considers the implications for their use in clinical practice. Summary: We compared, for women in Pakistan, the utility of intervention thresholds either at a T-score ≤ − 2.5 or based on a FRAX probability equivalent to women of average body mass index (BMI) with a prior fragility fracture. Whereas the FRAX-based intervention threshold identified women at high fracture probability, the T-score threshold was less sensitive, and the associated fracture risk decreased markedly with age. Purpose: The fracture risk assessment algorithm FRAX® has been recently calibrated for Pakistan, but guidance is needed on how to apply fracture probabilities to clinical practice. Methods: The age-specific 10-year probabilities of a major osteoporotic fracture were calculated in women with average BMI to determine fracture probabilities at two potential intervention thresholds. The first comprised the age-specific fracture probabilities associated with a femoral neck T-score of − 2.5. The second approach determined age-specific fracture probabilities that were equivalent to a woman with a prior fragility fracture, without bone mineral density (BMD). The parsimonious use of BMD was additionally explored by the computation of upper and lower assessment thresholds for BMD testing. Results: When a BMD T-score ≤ − 2.5 was used as an intervention threshold, FRAX probabilities in women aged 50 years were approximately two-fold higher than in women of the same age but with no risk factors and average BMD. The relative increase in risk associated with the BMD threshold decreased progressively with age such that, at the age of 80 years or more, a T-score of − 2.5 was actually protective. The 10-year probability of a major osteoporotic fracture by age, equivalent to women with a previous fracture, rose with age from 2.1% at the age of 40 years to 17%, at the age of 90 years, and identified women at increased risk at all ages. Conclusion: Intervention thresholds based on BMD alone do not effectively target women at high fracture risk, particularly in the elderly. We analyze the dynamic lot-sizing model in which the cast of a setup depends on the number of setups that have occurred prior to it. This arises, for example, when there exist learning effects in setups. Our model is more general than most learning models in the literature since it allows the total setup cost to be a general nondecreasing (but not necessarily' concave) function of the number of setups. We explore fight relationships between our model and special cases of the classical dynamic lot-sizing model. On the basis of these we find minimal forecast and planning horizons for our model, which determine the first decision when the model is solved on a rolling horizon basis. When a forecast horizon cannot be found, we provide guidelines regarding the optimal first decision. We also provide an algorithm to solve the finite horizon problem, which uses as sub-problems variations of the classical dynamic lot-sizing problem. The advantage of this approach is the ability to use the extensive literature available on the latter, to generalize the results of this paper. Guidelines, it is assumed in health care circles, have worth. In the ideal health care system they may offer everything from medical certainty to legal protection. They have the potential to save practitioners from the trauma of indecision and at the same time protect them from the consequences of wrong decisions. In this paper, I discuss the impact of guidelines on general practitioners and consumers. Both groups are at the effector end where guidelines should have maximal impact. It is primarily medical practitioners and their constituents in the long run that have to make guidelines work. Theoretical questions about the essential worth of guidelines for consumers and general practitioners are explored, as well as the more practical issues of utility of guidelines. My hypothesis is that guidelines may be conceptually worthwhile, but as yet are of unproven utility. This argument is traced through the literature surrounding the involvement of general practitioners and consumers in guideline development, implementation, review and relevance. From this information a new role for guidelines which is cogniscent of the needs and circumstances of the end users is postulated. Guidelines can become the basis for the principles of sound clinical practice which allow for the unique individual circumstances of clinical practice whilst also providing a consolidated basis for this practice. Objective: The present study strove to distinguish traffic-related glances away from the forward roadway from non-traffic-related glances while assessing the minimum amount of visual information intake necessary for safe driving in particular scenarios.Background: Published gaze-based distraction detection algorithms and guidelines for distraction prevention essentially measure the time spent looking away from the forward roadway, without incorporating situation-based attentional requirements. Incorporating situation-based attentional requirements would entail an approach that not only considers the time spent looking elsewhere but also checks whether all necessary information has been sampled.Method: We assess the visual sampling requirements for the forward view based on 25 experienced drivers' self-paced visual occlusion in real motorway traffic, dependent on a combination of situational factors, and compare these with their corresponding glance behavior in baseline driving.Results: Occlusion durations were on average 3 times longer than glances away from the forward roadway, and they varied substantially depending on particular maneuvers and on the proximity of other traffic, showing that interactions with nearby traffic increase perceived uncertainty. The frequency of glances away from the forward roadway was relatively stable across proximity levels and maneuvers, being very similar to what has been found in naturalistic driving.Conclusion: Glances away from the forward roadway proved qualitatively different from occlusions in both their duration and when they occur. Our findings indicate that glancing away from the forward roadway for driving purposes is not the same as glancing away for other purposes, and that neither is necessarily equivalent to distraction. Rules for setting simulated annealing control parameters are proposed for block layout problems where different material-handling devices are dynamically assigned to individual material movements as layout solutions are perturbed. Recognizing the high cost of computing materials-handling cost in this type of problem, the rules are based on adapting an existing two-stage simulated annealing procedure to accelerate convergence. Experimental results suggest that the application of these rules yields solution quality comparable with other single and two-stage simulated annealing algorithms but with significantly fewer re-evaluations of the objective function. Background Empiric therapy of pneumonia is currently based on the site of acquisition (community or hospital), but could be chosen, based on risk factors for multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens, independent of site of acquisition. Methods We prospectively applied a therapeutic algorithm based on MDR risks, in a multicenter cohort study of 1089 patients with 656 community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), 238 healthcare-associated pneumonia (HCAP), 140 hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP), or 55 ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Results Approximately 83% of patients were treated according to the algorithm, with 4.3% receiving inappropriate therapy. The frequency of MDR pathogens varied, respectively, with VAP (50.9%), HAP (27.9%), HCAP (10.9%), and CAP (5.2%). Those with ≥2 MDR risks had MDR pathogens more often than those with 0–1 MDR risk (25.8% vs 5.3%, P <.001). The 30-day mortality rates were as follows: VAP (18.2%), HAP (13.6%), HCAP (6.7%), and CAP (4.7%), and were lower in patients with 0–1 MDR risks than in those with ≥2 MDR risks (4.5% vs 12.5%, P <.001). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, 5 risk factors (advanced age, hematocrit <30%, malnutrition, dehydration, and chronic liver disease), as well as hypotension and inappropriate therapy were significantly correlated with 30-day mortality, whereas the classification of pneumonia type (VAP, HAP, HCAP, CAP) was not. Conclusions Individual MDR risk factors can be used in a unified algorithm to guide and simplify empiric therapy for all pneumonia patients, and were more important than the classification of site of pneumonia acquisition in determining 30-day mortality. Infrequency scales are becoming a popular mode of data screening, due to their availability and ease of implementation. Recent research has indicated that the interpretation and functioning of infrequency items may not be as straightforward as had previously been thought (Curran & Hauser, 2015), yet there are no empirically based guidelines for implementing cutoffs using these items. In the present study, we compared two methods of detecting random responding with infrequency items: a zero-tolerance threshold versus a threshold that balances classification error rates. The results showed that a traditional zero-tolerance approach, on average, screens data that are less indicative of careless responding than those screened by the error-balancing approach. Thus, the de facto standard of applying a “zero-tolerance” approach when screening participants with infrequency scales may be too stringent, so that meaningful responses may also be removed from analyses. Background The first British Dietetic Association ( BDA) guidelines for the dietary management of irritable bowel syndrome ( IBS) in adults were published in 2012. Subsequently, there has been a wealth of new research. The aim of this work was to systematically review the evidence for the role of diet in the management of IBS and to update the guidelines. Methods Twelve questions relating to diet and IBS were defined based on review of the previous guideline questions, current evidence and clinical practice. Chosen topics were on healthy eating and lifestyle (alcohol, caffeine, spicy food, elimination diets, fat and fluid intakes and dietary habits), milk and dairy, dietary fibre, fermentable carbohydrates, gluten, probiotics and elimination diets/food hypersensitivity. Data sources were CINAHL, Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, Medline, Scopus and Web of Science up to October 2015. Studies were assessed independently in duplicate using risk of bias tools specific to each included study based on inclusion and exclusion criteria for each question. National Health and Medical Research Council grading evidence levels were used to develop evidence statements and recommendations, in accordance with Practice-based Evidence in Nutrition Global protocol used by the BDA. Results Eighty-six studies were critically appraised to generate 46 evidence statements, 15 clinical recommendations and four research recommendations. The IBS dietary algorithm was simplified to first-line (healthy eating, provided by any healthcare professional) and second-line [low FODMAP ( fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols) to be provided by dietitian] dietary advice. Purpose The purpose of the present systematic review was to develop a practice guideline to inform health care providers about screening, assessment, and effective management of cancer-related fatigue (CRF) in adults. Methods The internationally endorsed ADAPTE methodology was used to develop a practice guideline for pan- Canadian use. A systematic search of the literature identified a broad range of evidence: clinical practice guidelines, systematic reviews, and other guidance documents on the screening, assessment, and management of CRF. The search included MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, the Cochrane Library, and other guideline and data sources to December 2009. Results Two clinical practice guidelines were identified for adaptation. Seven guidance documents and four systematic reviews also provided supplementary evidence to inform guideline recommendations. Health professionals across Canada provided expert feedback on the adapted recommendations in the practice guideline and algorithm through a participatory external review process. Conclusions Practice guidelines can facilitate the adoption of evidence-based assessment and interventions for adult cancer patients experiencing fatigue. In many applications, the traffic traversing the network has interpacket dependencies due to application-level encoding schemes. For some applications, e.g., multimedia streaming, dropping a single packet may render useless the delivery of a whole sequence. In such environments, the algorithm used to decide which packet to drop in case of buffer overflows must be carefully designed, to avoid goodput degradation. We present a model that captures such interpacket dependencies, and design algorithms for performing packet discard. Traffic consists of an aggregation of multiple streams, each of which consists of a sequence of interdependent packets. We provide two guidelines for designing buffer management algorithms, and demonstrate their effectiveness. We devise an algorithm according to these guidelines and evaluate its performance analytically, using competitive analysis. We also perform a simulation study that shows that the performance of our algorithm is within a small fraction of the performance of the best known offline algorithm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Zambia adopted integrated management of Childhood illnesses (IMCI) in 1995 and a number of adaptations have been made to the generic WHO/UNICEF IMCI guidelines to better conform to Zambia's health service needs. One significant adaptation is the incorporation of HIV guidelines into the IMCI algorithm. Since 2004, health workers that have undergone IMCI case management training have also received training in HIV assessment. During initial follow-up visits in 11 districts 90 health workers were assessed in 2007 to determine their adherence to the IMCI algorithm. The assessment showed that 97% of the health workers assessed did not review or mention the HIV guidelines even though they had received HIV training as part of IMCI. This study aimed to explore reasons for non-adherence to HIV guidelines in the IMCI algorithm and make recommendations on how this can be improved. Methods: Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to collect information from eligible health workers. Forty (40) health workers were randomly selected from among those who received initial follow-up visits between March 2007 and January 2008. The health workers were selected from eight districts in four provinces of Zambia. Qualitative data was collected using Focus group discussion and key informant interviews Results: 83% of the respondents said they had no difficulties in following the HIV adapted IMCI guidelines. 17% said they had difficulties. Of those who admitted having difficulties (60%) had difficulties in HIV assessment. Interesting, prompting and focus group discussions revealed that most respondents actually had difficulties in HIV assessment but could not admit it readily. Some barriers that contributed to non-adherence to the guidelines included lack of time due to inadequate staffing, lack of privacy in the health facilities and HIV related stigma from both caregivers and health workers. Frequent use of guidelines and supervision appeared to re-enforce adherence to the guidelines. Conclusion: The findings in this study suggest that training in HIV adapted IMCI guidelines is not sufficient to enable health workers to actually use their knowledge in their daily practice. In December 2005, we met with the aim of developing an evidence-based treatment algorithm for anal fissure, applicable to both primary and secondary care. The dynamic nature and comparatively young age of computational chemistry is such that novel algorithms continue to be developed at a rapid pace. Such efforts are often wrought at the expense of extensive experimental validations of said techniques, preventing a deeper understanding of their potential utility and limitations. Here we address this issue for ligand-based virtual screening descriptors through design of validation experiments that better reflect the aims of real world application. Applying the newly defined chemotype enrichment approach, a variety of two- and three-dimensional (2D/3D) similarity descriptors have been compared extensively across data sets from four diverse target types. The inhibitors within said data sets contain molecules exhibiting a wide array of substructure functionality, size and flexibility, permitting descriptor comparison in myriad settings. Relative descriptor performance under these conditions is examined, including results obtained using more typical virtual screening validation experiments. Various techniques for the extraction of ANN rules have been used, but most of them have focused on certain types of networks and their training. There are very few methods that deal with ANN rule extraction as systems that are independent of their architecture, training, and internal distribution of weights, connections, and activation functions. This article proposes a methodology for the extraction of ANN rules, regardless of their architecture, and based on genetic programming. The strategy is based on the previous algorithm and aims at achieving the generalization capacity that is characteristic of ANNs by means of symbolic rules that are understandable to human beings. We consider the problem of minimizing project duration in an environment where each project activity can be executed by a number of different flexible resources. The capabilities of the flexible resources are modeled using a binary activity-resource matrix A called the availability matrix. Activity durations are known deterministically. We develop tight lower bounds and a variety of heuristics accompanied with extensive computational tests regarding their performance. It is shown that our algorithms consistently perform near optimally. Using these heuristics, we perform experiments on the effect of operating flexibility on project duration, where resource flexibility is measured by the number of resources available per activity, and the form of the availability matrix A. Our experiments lead to important managerial guidelines regarding the role of resource flexibility on project duration. For instance, it is found that when the flexible capabilities of the resources are evenly distributed across the activities, small improvements in resource flexibilities provide nearly the same benefits in project duration as a system of fully flexible resources. Abstract Medicine has evolved toward rationalization since the Enlightenment, favouring quantitative measures. Now, a paradigm shift toward control through formalization can be observed in health care whose structures and processes are subjected to increasing standardization. However, educational reforms and curricula do not yet adequately respond to this shift. The aim of this article is to describe innovative approaches in medical education for adapting to these changes. The study design is a descriptive case report relying on a literature review and on a reform project’s evaluation. Concept mapping is used to graphically represent relationships among concepts, i.e. defined terms from educational literature. Definitions of ‘concept map’, ‘guideline’ and ‘algorithm’ are presented. A prototypical algorithm for organizational decision making in the project’s instructional design is shown. Evaluation results of intrinsic learning motivation are demonstrated: intrinsic learning motivation depends upon students’ perception of their competence exhibiting path coefficients varying from 0.42 to 0.51. Perception of competence varies with the type of learning environment. An innovative educational format, called ‘evidence-based learning (EBL)’ is deduced from these findings and described here. Effects of formalization consist of structuring decision making about implementation of different learning environments or about minimizing variance in teaching or learning. Unintended effects of formalization such as implementation problems and bureaucracy are discussed. Formalized tools for designing medical education are available. Specific instructional designs influence students’ learning motivation. Concept maps are suitable for controlling educational quality, thus enabling the paradigm shift in medical education. Modern manufacturing systems rely on a smooth and quick transformation of the design specification into manufacturing instructions. The shift towards feature-based design and manufacturing supports this effort. One of the weak links in this chain of activities is the conversion of the design features into the manufacturing features. This article presents a method based on graph grammar parsing that converts design geometrical features into manufacturing geometrical features. These features can then be used in process planning activities. The method presented extends the state of the art of syntactic graph-based features recognition by supporting embedding transformations, attribute transfer algorithms, decomposition of overlapping features and removal of empty volumes. In addition, the analysis provided by the graph parsing algorithms implicitly treats the features as solid models without the need to perform complicated geometrical analysis. Path planning algorithms for automated fiber placement are used to determine the directions of the fiber paths and the start and end positions on the mold surfaces. The quality of the fiber paths determines largely the efficiency and quality of the automated fiber placement process. The presented work investigated an efficient path planning algorithm based on surface meshing. In addition, an update method of the datum direction vector via a guide-line update strategy was proposed to make the path planning algorithm applicable for complex surfaces. Finally, accuracy analysis was performed on the proposed algorithm and it can be adopted as the reference for the triangulation parameter selection for the path planning algorithm. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) are commonly used for localization or movement tracking in pervasive healthcare-related studies, and gait analysis is one of the most often studied topics using IMUs. The increasing variety of commercially available IMU devices offers convenience by combining the sensor modalities and simplifies the data collection procedures. However, selecting the most suitable IMU device for a certain use case is increasingly challenging. In this study, guidelines for IMU selection are proposed. In particular, seven IMUs were compared in terms of their specifications, data collection procedures, and raw data quality. Data collected from the IMUs were then analyzed by a gait analysis algorithm. The difference in accuracy of the calculated gait parameters between the IMUs could be used to retrace the issues in raw data, such as acceleration range or sensor calibration. Based on our algorithm, we were able to identify the best-suited IMUs for our needs. This study provides an overview of how to select the IMUs based on the area of study with concrete examples, and gives insights into the features of seven commercial IMUs using real data.
