There is a trend to deploy neural network on edge devices in recent years. While the mainstream of research often concerns with single edge device processing and edge-cloud two-layer neural network collaborative computing, in this paper, we propose partitioning multi-layer edge network for neural network collaborative computing. With the proposed method, sub-models of neural network are deployed on multi-layer edge devices along the communication path from end users to cloud. Firstly, we propose an optimal path selection method to form a neural network collaborative computing path with lowest communication overhead. Secondly, we establish a time-delay optimization mathematical model to evaluate the effects of different partitioning solutions. To find the optimal partition solution, an ordered elitist genetic algorithm (OEGA) is proposed. The experimental results show that, compared with traditional cloud computing, single-device edge computing and edge-cloud collaborative computing, the proposed multi-layer edge network collaborative computing has a smaller runtime delay with limited bandwidth resources, and because of the pipeline computing characteristics, the proposed method has a better response speed when processing large number of requests. Meanwhile, the OEGA algorithm has better performance than conventional methods, and the optimized partitioning method outperforms other methods like random and evenly partition. The article presents comments on the management science paper "On Sequencing n Jobs on One Machine to Minimize the Number of Late Jobs," by William L. Maxwell. The paper focused on an integer programming formulation of a one-machine job shop problem. The author contends that Maxwell made in error in proving the validity of an optimal algorithm by applying cutting plane constraints to the problem. The author explains that the problem cannot be solved through traditional cutting plane procedures. The author provides a mathematical model in an attempt to correct the proof.

This paper proposes a new hybrid optimization method for the phase-frequency characteristics of the double input power system stabilizer (PSS) based on the improved active set algorithm. This method takes the effect of the filtering section optimization on the parameter improvement into account, and the optimized model focuses on the minimum residual sum of squares between the actual and the target phase-frequency characteristics. The result shows that the improved parameters obtained from the proposed method provide much better phase-frequency characteristics than the widely used engineering parameters. The comparison between the proposed method and the typical commercial software indicates the universal superiority of the proposed method. And the studies on the impact of considering the filter section optimization on the phase-frequency improvement show that taking the filter section optimization into account will be beneficial for the phase-frequency improvement, though in application to the PSS2A model and the PSS2B model there are some differences. The theory of variational inequalities is an important tool in physics, engineering, finance, and optimization theory. The projection algorithm and its variants are useful tools for determining the approximate solution to the variational inequality problem. This paper introduces three distinct extragradient algorithms for dealing with variational inequality problems involving quasi-monotone and semistrictly quasi-monotone operators in infinite-dimensional real Hilbert spaces. This problem is a general mathematical model that incorporates a set of applied mathematical models as an example, such as equilibrium models, optimization problems, fixed point problems, saddle point problems, and Nash equilibrium point problems. The proposed algorithms employ both fixed and variable stepsize rules that are iteratively transformed based on previous iterations. These algorithms are based on the fact that no prior knowledge of the Lipschitz constant or any line-search framework is required. To demonstrate the convergence of the proposed algorithms, some simple conditions are used. Numerous experiments have been conducted to highlight the numerical capabilities of algorithms. This paper presents a novel method on the optimization of bi-objective Flexible Job-shop Scheduling Problem (FJSP) under stochastic processing times. The robust counterpart model and the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) are used to solve the bi-objective FJSP with consideration of the completion time and the total energy consumption under stochastic processing times. The case study on GM Corporation verifies that the NSGA-II used in this paper is effective and has advantages to solve the proposed model comparing with HPSO and PSO+SA. The idea and method of the paper can be generalized widely in the manufacturing industry, because it can reduce the energy consumption of the energy-intensive manufacturing enterprise with less investment when the new approach is applied in existing systems. Stochastic configuration network (SCN) is a mathematical model of incremental generation under a supervision mechanism, which has universal approximation property and advantages in data modeling. However, the efficiency of SCN is affected by some network parameters. An optimized searching algorithm for the input weights and biases is proposed in this paper. An optimization model with constraints is first established based on the convergence theory and inequality supervision mechanism of SCN; Then, a hybrid bat-particle swarm optimization algorithm (G-BAPSO) based on gradient information is proposed under the framework of PSO algorithm, which mainly uses gradient information and local adaptive adjustment mechanism characterized by pulse emission frequency to improve the searching ability. The algorithm optimizes the input weights and biases to improve the convergence rate of the network. Simulation results over some datasets demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the proposed algorithm. The training RMSE of G-BAPSO-SCN increased by 5.57 × 10 − 5 and 3.2 × 10 − 3 compared with that of SCN in the two regression experiments, and the recognition accuracy of G-BAPSO-SCN increased by 0.07% on average in the classification experiments. In this paper, a novel algorithm “firework optimization” (FO) is introduced, as well as its hybridization with generating set search (GSS). FO is an exploration algorithm, which intends to explore a vast region within the search space in order to determine regions that may contain a regional optimum. As the regions with potential are defined, GSS, the exploitation algorithm is applied to determine whether regions determined by FO contain a local or a global optimum. The validity of FO and GSS hybridization algorithm is verified using Branin and Six-Hump Camel test functions, and the hybridization algorithm is applied to an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor, in order to minimize torque ripple. The end-of-life (EOL) disassembly sequencing problem (DSP) has become increasingly important in the process of handling EOL products. This paper proposes a solution procedure for the “EOL DSP”; the procedure is based on a novel soft-computing algorithm that utilizes modified “simplified swarm optimization,” and the procedure combines the precedence preservative operator, feasible solution generator, self-adaptive parameter control, and repetitive pairwise exchange procedures. By taking into consideration the non-deterministic polynomial time (NP)-complete nature of the problem, the proposed algorithm efficiently seeks the optimal disassembly sequence with a novel approach; this approach involves reducing the initial solution space and using a combination of soft-computing algorithms for achieving higher computational efficiency and solution quality. The results presented in this paper show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing algorithms in terms of solution quality achieved in a limited computation time. This paper solves the variation-aware decoupling capacitance (decap) budgeting problem. Unlike previous works which only consider worst case design, for the first time, we consider the input of both process variation and operation variation for decap budgeting. A novel stochastic current model is proposed that efficiently and accurately captures temporal correlation between clock cycles, logic-induced correlation between ports, and current variation due to process variation with spatial correlation. An iterative alternative programming algorithm that is applicable to a variety of current models is then developed. Compared with the baseline model which assumes maximum current peaks at all ports, the model considering temporal correlation reduces noise by up to 5×, and the model considering both temporal and logic-induced correlations reduces noise by up to 17×. Compared with using deterministic process parameters, considering process variation (in particular Leff variation) reduces the mean noise by up to 4× and 3σ noise by up to 13× when both applying the current model with temporal and logic-induced correlations. Note that stochastic optimization has been used mainly for process variation in the literature, but this paper convincingly demonstrate that stochastic optimization considering operation variation is effective to reduce overdesign introduced by worst case design for power integrity. Such stochastic optimization has a wide scope of applications to design problems. Energy-saving production is one of the issues that must be paid attention to by today's manufacturing enterprises. Aiming at the problem of integrated process planning and scheduling (IPPS) in the manufacturing process, considering Time-of-Use (TOU) and tiered electricity price, this paper systematically studies the energy-saving scheduling problem in order to reduce the power consumption in processing and production. To establish the multiobjective optimization mathematical model of the problem, the load balancing problem of the equipment is considered, the minimization of the power consumption and the maximum load of the equipment are taken as the optimization objectives. Then, considering the constraints of resource and multiprocess, the switching strategy of the equipment in idle time is introduced, including shutdown and restart operations. In order to solve the model easily, a multiobjective firefly algorithm (MOFA) based on five-layer coding is designed, and the elite strategy is introduced to protect the excellent firefly individuals in the iterative population. Finally, through a specific example, the Pareto solution set is obtained, which provides a reference scheme for decision-makers, and verifies the correctness of the model and the effectiveness of the algorithm. The distributed power control algorithms available in this paper assume perfect estimation of interference power at the receivers and often, the availability of perfect local channel state information (CSI). However, perfect estimation of interference power or acquisition of channel information is impractical. In this paper, we consider a generic class of distributed power control algorithms and analyze the resulting performance loss when faced with errors in CSI and/or interference level estimation. We approximate such power control algorithms with linearized state space dynamics wherein the errors in the estimation of received interference or the CSI, can be modeled as additive observation noise. Based on the proposed model, we derive lower bounds on the norm of the errors in the transmit power vector and receive signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) vector. Our analysis suggests that when the target SINR vector approaches the Pareto-optimal bound, the errors in the transmit vectors could grow without bound. As a consequence, to maintain a performance loss within an acceptable range, either much longer estimation times or lower target SINRs are required. This paper combines two rival preference modeling techniques in a new approach to multi-attribute decision making. Currently existing multi-attribute procedures use either global or local preference modeling. In the global modeling technique, a single preference function is constructed in the large; its maximum is the optimal alternative. In the local procedure, sequential approximations of the preference function are constructed in the small. Each approximation generates a trial solution. Under suitable conditions, each trial solution is preferred to its predecessor, so the trial sequence eventually reaches the optimum. Each technique has advantages and disadvantages; this paper combines the desirable features of both techniques in a new improved method. This new method, called the proxy approach, uses the advantages of one technique to overcome the disadvantages of the other. This paper first develops the theoretical aspects of the proxy approach and then compares it to existing procedures. This paper proposes the design of robust repetitive control with time-varying sampling periods. First, it develops a new frequency domain method to design a low-order, stable, robust, and causal IIR repetitive compensator using an optimization method to achieve fast convergence and high tracking accuracy. As such, a new stable and causal repetitive controller can be implemented independently to reduce the design complexity. The comprehensive analysis and comparison study are presented. Then, this paper extends the method to design a robust repetitive controller, which compensates time-varying periodic signals in a known range. In this paper, we propose biogeography based optimization technique, with linear and sinusoidal migration models and simplified biogeography based optimization (S-BBO), for uniformly spaced linear antenna array synthesis to maximize the reduction of side lobe level (SLL). This paper explores biogeography theory. It generalizes two migration models in BBO namely, linear migration model and sinusoidal migration model. The performance of SLL reduction in ULA is investigated. Our performance study shows that among the two, sinusoidal migration model is a promising candidate for optimization. In our work, simplified - BBO algorithm is also deployed. This determines an optimum set value for amplitude excitations of antenna array elements that generate a radiation pattern with maximum side lobe level reduction. This paper introduces the minimum-time arbitrarily constrained distributed scheduling problem. The optimal distributed nonsequential backtracking algorithm is used by agents to schedule tasks where the tasks are related by constraints and where the assignment of tasks to agents may change during scheduling. The problem is distributed in that no agent has full knowledge either of the communication network or of the scheduling constraints. Each agent knows the assignments of the agents with which it can communicate and the scheduled times of the tasks assigned to those agents. The minimum-time arbitrarily constrained distributed scheduling problem is for the agents to use this local knowledge to find a schedule that satisfies all constraints and minimizes the time needed to complete all tasks. The optimal distributed nonsequential backtracking algorithm is able to find minimum-time schedules that satisfy all constraints. This algorithm is designed to work concurrently with a distributed assignment algorithm that satisfies certain communication requirements detailed in this paper. Effect-based weapon–target pairing assigns weapons to targets for the given desired effects on such targets. The most obvious and natural effects on targets are represented by the percentages of damage of these targets. In this paper, we focus on the generation of input for effect-based weapon–target pairing optimization. One way to generate such input is based on the Joint Munition Effectiveness Manual (JMEM). JMEM allows the evaluation of the weapons. It is a database that contains many tables, and each table contains many different data fields. Because of the sheer size of JMEM, the optimization of weapon–target pairing based on JMEM is currently focused mainly on one target at a time. In other words, the optimization of weapon–target pairing for many targets and weapons is not directly supported by JMEM, although all the necessary data is there. In this paper, we derive an input based on the given JMEM and desired effect(s), which should be useful in the follow-on effect-based weapon–target pairing optimization that is not limited to a single weapon or target. In particular, effect-based weapon–target pairing will rely on the scanning of the attack guidance table that we derive from JMEM to determine a preferred set of weapon combinations for engaging a given set of targets. This paper focuses on the optimization of a linear actuator by the “output space mapping (OSM)” method. The underlying objective of this work lies in the minimization of the time required for the achievement of this optimal design. Indeed, in addition to the sole costs of optimization processes strictly speaking, the time needed for the developpement of the models is taken into account. In the context of OSM, two different finite-element models of the same actuator are used. This paper presents these modeling solutions and considers their corresponding accuracy. Results of this multi-objective optimization method are presented and compared with those obtained by the sequential simplex (SS) method based solely on the fine model. Both approaches give similar results. However, the comparison of their performances clearly shows that the OSM algorithm is an effective technique for reducing the computation time of optimization studies, even in the case of relatively simple electromagnetic structures. Automatic differentiation (AD) is introduced as a powerful technique to compute derivatives of functions given in the form of computer programs in high-level programming languages such as FORTRAN, C, or C++. This paper applies AD to compute error-free gradients of electromagnetic device sizing models. Then, the obtained gradients are exploited in optimization to size electromagnetic devices by means of minimizing a cost function with constrained parameters and performances. Often, the electromagnetic devices models have to be described not only by analytical formulas, but also by algorithms. This paper proposes an electromagnetic model of a linear actuator dealing with implicit equations solved by numerical algorithms. The ADOL-C package is considered for automatic differentiation. Recent years have witnessed extensive research activity in modeling biological phenomena as well as in developing intervention strategies for such phenomena. S-systems, which offer a good compromise between accuracy and mathematical flexibility, are a promising framework for modeling the dynamical behavior of biological phenomena. In this paper, two different intervention strategies, namely direct and indirect, are proposed for the S-system model. In the indirect approach, the prespecified desired values for the target variables are used to compute the reference values for the control inputs, and two control algorithms, namely simple sampled-data control and model predictive control (MPC), are developed for transferring the control variables from their initial values to the computed reference ones. In the direct approach, a MPC algorithm is developed that directly guides the target variables to their desired values. The proposed intervention strategies are applied to the glycolytic–glycogenolytic pathway and the simulation results presented demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes. This paper presents an online procedure for the automatic search of the maximum-torque-per-ampere operating region for a synchronous reluctance motor. The algorithm is based on a signal-injection method with a random-based perturbation pattern applied to a common direct-torque-controlled drive. Among motor parameters, only the stator resistance is required to perform the automatic procedure. This paper presents a tabu search algorithm that solves the flexible job shop scheduling problem to minimize the makespan time. As a context for solving sequencing and scheduling problems, the flexible job shop model is highly complicated. Alternative operation sequences and sequence-dependent setups are two important factors that frequently appear in various manufacturing environments and in project scheduling. In this paper, we present a model for a flexible job shop scheduling problem while considering those factors simultaneously. The purpose of this paper is to minimize the makespan time and to find the best sequence of operations and the best choice of machine alternatives, simultaneously. The proposed tabu search algorithm is composed of two parts: a procedure that searches for the best sequence of job operations, and a procedure that finds the best choice of machine alternatives. Randomly generated test problems are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm. Results of the algorithm are compared with the optimal solution using a mathematical model solved by the traditional optimization technique (the branch and bound method). After modeling the scheduling problem, the model is verified and validated. Then the computational results are presented. Computational results indicate that the proposed algorithm can produce optimal solutions in a short computational time for small and medium sized problems. We study the problem of power efficient multiuser beamforming transmission for both uplink and downlink. The base station is equipped with multiple antennas, whereas the mobile units have single antennas. In the uplink, interference is canced by successive decoding. in the downlink, ideal "dirty paper" precoding is assumed. The design goal is to minimize the total transmit power while maintaining individual SINR constraints. In the uplink, the optimization problem is solved by a recursive formula with low computational complexity. The downlink problem is solved by exploiting the duality between uplink and downlink; thus, the uplink solution carries over to the downlink. In the second part of the paper, we show how the solution can be applied to the problem of rate balancing in Gaussian multiuser channels. We propose a strategy for throughput-wise optimal transmission for broadcast and multiple access channels under a sum power constraint. Finally, we show that single-user transmission achieves the sum capacity in the low-SNR regime. We completely characterize the SNR-range where single-user transmission is optimal. In this paper, we investigate the properties of the sampled version of the fictitious play algorithm, familiar from game theory, for games with identical payoffs, and propose a heuristic based on fictitious play as a solution procedure for discrete optimization problems of the form max {u(y) y = (y1,…yn ∈ y1 x … x yn} i.e., in which the feasible region is a Cartesian product of finite sets y1 i ∈ N = (1, …, n). The contributions of this paper are twofold. In the first part of the paper, we broaden the existing results on convergence properties of the fictitious play algorithm on games with identical payoffs to include an approximate fictitious play algorithm that allows for errors in players 'best replies. Moreover, we introduce sampling-based approximate fictitious play that possesses the above convergence properties, and at the same time provides a computationally efficient method for implementing fictitious play. In the second part of the paper, we motivate the use of algorithms based on sampled fictitious play to solve optimization problems in the above form with particular focus on the problems in which the objective function u(·) comes from a "black box," such as a simulation model, where significant computational effort is required for each function evaluation. In this paper, an improved algorithm of wavelet packet-chaos model for life prediction of space relays based on volterra series is proposed. In the proposed method, the high and low frequency time sequence components of performance parameters are obtained by employing the improved wavelet packet transform to decompose the performance parameters of the relay into multiple scales. Then the optimization algorithm of parameters in volterra series is improved, and is used to construct a chaotic forecasting model for the high and low frequency time sequence components gained by the wavelet packet transform. At last, the chaotic forecasting results of the high and low frequency components are combined by taking the wavelet packet reconstruction approach, so as to predict the lifetime of the studied space relay. The algorithm can predict the life curve of the relay accurately and reflect the characteristics of the relay performance with sufficient accuracy. IC3 is one of the most successful algorithms for hardware model checking. Since its invention in 2010, several variants of the original algorithm have been published, proposing optimizations and/or alternative procedures for many different steps of the algorithm. In this paper, we present a thorough empirical comparison of a large set of optimizations and procedures for the steps of IC3, considering “high-level” variants/extensions to the basic algorithm, as well as “low-level” optimizations/configuration settings. We implemented each of them in the same tool, optimizing the implementations to the best of our knowledge. This enabled for a flexible experimentation in a controlled environment, and to gain new insights about their most important differences and commonalities, as well as about their performance characteristics. We conducted the experiments using as benchmarks the problems used in the last four editions of the hardware model checking competition. This paper considers optimization problems with a nonlinear-additive objective function and a single linear constraint. Such models have numerous direct applications and serve as subproblems in procedures for more complex problems. Some important portfolio selection problems can be expressed in this form, and the problem also arises in economic theory. Several authors have noticed independently that special cases and variants of the problem can be solved exactly by surprisingly simple, finite algorithms. The major purpose of this paper is to present these results in a unified framework, which then permits substantial generalizations and extensions. This paper presents an algorithm for finding the K loopless paths that have the shortest lengths from one node to another node in a network. The significance of the new algorithm is that its computational upper bound increases only linearly with the value of K. Consequently, in general, the new algorithm is extremely efficient as compared with the algorithms proposed by Bock, Kantner, and Haynes [2], Pollack [7], [8], Clarke, Krikorian, and Rausan [3], Sakarovitch [9] and others. This paper first reviews the algorithms presently available for finding the K shortest loopless paths in terms of the computational effort and memory addresses they require. This is followed by the presentation of the new algorithm and its justification. Finally, the efficiency of the new algorithm is examined and compared with that of other algorithms. Many engineering problems can be categorized into constrained optimization problems (COPs). The engineering design optimization problem is very important in engineering industries. Because of the complexities of mathematical models, it is difficult to find a perfect method to solve all the COPs very well. ε constrained differential evolution (εDE) algorithm is an effective method in dealing with the COPs. However, εDE still cannot obtain more precise solutions. The interaction between feasible and infeasible individuals can be enhanced, and the feasible individuals can lead the population finding optimum around it. Hence, in this paper we propose a new algorithm based on ε feasible individuals driven local search called as ε constrained differential evolution algorithm with a novel local search operator (εDE-LS). The effectiveness of the proposed εDE-LS algorithm is tested. Furthermore, four real-world engineering design problems and a case study have been studied. In this paper, we introduce and analyze a general iterative algorithm for finding a common solution of a finite family of mixed equilibrium problems, a general system of generalized equilibria and a fixed point problem of nonexpansive mappings in a real Hilbert space. Under some appropriate conditions, we derive the strong convergence of the sequence generated by the proposed algorithm to a common solution, which also solves some optimization problem. This paper mainly discusses the application of the particle swarm optimization in logistics distribution routing problems. Combining with the characteristics of logistics and distribution, it established a mathematical model of the distribution routing problem. Introducing three kinds of optimization strategies in the particle swarm optimization to optimize the particle swarm algorithm, constructing three different particle swarm algorithms of LinWPSO, SAPSO and RandWPSO, used respectively the standard of PSO, LinWPSO, SAPSO and RandWPSO to solve calculation cases of problems in logistics and route, the results showed that the performance of the LinWPSO, SAPSO and RandWPSO to solve vehicle routing problem is better than standard PSO. The article discusses the book Advances in Multiple Objective and Goal Programming: Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Multi-Objective Programming and Goal Programming, Torremolinos, Spain, May 16-18, 1996. Forty-one papers are devoted to optimization topics in multiple criteria decision-making, particularly multiple objective programming and goal programming. The keynote address offers personal reflections on the education of a multi-criteria researcher. Papers in part 1 cover a range of innovative applications in the state-of-the-art use of goal programming. Part 2 contains papers directed at theoretical topics in multiple objective programming-ranging from new ideas in combinatorial optimization, scalarizing functions, preference modeling, duality, and matrix games to properties of efficient points. Papers in part 3 address the implementation and practice of multiple objective programming, covering heuristic searches, decision support systems, interactive algorithms, and applications.

For railway operators, one of many important goals is to improve the utilization efficiency of electric multiple units (EMUs). When operators design EMU circulation plans, EMU type restrictions are critical factors when assigning EMUs to the correct depots for maintenance. However, existing studies only consider that EMUs are maintained at their home depots. However, targeting that problem, in this paper, an optimization model for the EMU circulation planning problem that allows depots to be selected for EMU maintenance is proposed. This model aims at optimizing the number of used EMUs and the number of EMU maintenance tasks and simultaneously incorporates other important constraints, including type restrictions, on EMU maintenance and night accommodation capacity at depots. In order to solve the model, a branch-and-price algorithm is also developed. A case study of a real-world high-speed railway was conducted to compare and analyze the effects of different maintenance location constraints. The results show that the number of EMUs used will decrease under the maintenance sharing scheme, the number of EMU maintenance tasks can be reduced, and the time occupied in EMU maintenance will be released. In addition, the scheme of maintenance resources sharing and increases to mileage limits can effectively decrease the number of EMU maintenance tasks significantly. This paper aims at proposing a quadratic assignment-based mathematical model to deal with the stochastic dynamic facility layout problem. In this problem, product demands are assumed to be dependent normally distributed random variables with known probability density function and covariance that change from period to period at random. To solve the proposed model, a novel hybrid intelligent algorithm is proposed by combining the simulated annealing and clonal selection algorithms. The proposed model and the hybrid algorithm are verified and validated using design of experiment and benchmark methods. The results show that the hybrid algorithm has an outstanding performance from both solution quality and computational time points of view. Coordination of directional overcurrent relays in a multiloop subtransmission or distribution network is formulated as an optimization problem. In this paper, the coordination of directional overcurrent relays is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem and is then solved by a new seeker optimization technique. Based on the act of human searching, in the proposed seeker technique, the search direction and step length are determined in an adaptive way. Image formation algorithms in a variety of applications have explicit or implicit dependence on a mathematical model of the observation process. Inaccuracies in the observation model may cause various degradations and artifacts in the reconstructed images. The application of interest in this paper is synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging, which particularly suffers from motion-induced model errors. These types of errors result in phase errors in SAR data, which cause defocusing of the reconstructed images. Particularly focusing on imaging of fields that admit a sparse representation, we propose a sparsity-driven method for joint SAR imaging and phase error correction. Phase error correction is performed during the image formation process. The problem is set up as an optimization problem in a nonquadratic regularization-based framework. The method involves an iterative algorithm, where each iteration of which consists of consecutive steps of image formation and model error correction. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the approach for various types of phase errors, as well as the improvements that it provides over existing techniques for model error compensation in SAR. This paper introduces a tensor framework to solve the problem of nonunitary joint block diagonalization (JBD) of a set of real or complex valued matrices. We show that JBD can be seen as a particular case of the block-component-decomposition (BCD) of a third-order tensor. The resulting tensor model fitting problem does not require the block-diagonalizer to be a square matrix: the over- and underdetermined cases can be handled. To compute the tensor decomposition, we build an efficient nonlinear conjugate gradient (NCG) algorithm. In the over- and exactly determined cases, we show that exact JBD can be computed by a closed-form solution based on eigenvalue analysis. In approximate JBD problems, this solution can be used to efficiently initialize any iterative JBD algorithm such as NCG. In this paper, we study the problem of optimal trajectory generation for a team of heterogeneous robots moving in a plane and tracking a moving target by processing relative observations, i.e., distance and/or bearing. Contrary to previous approaches, we explicitly consider limits on the robots’ speed and impose constraints on the minimum distance at which the robots are allowed to approach the target. We first address the case of a single tracking sensor and seek the next sensing location in order to minimize the uncertainty about the target’s position. We show that although the corresponding optimization problem involves a nonconvex objective function and a nonconvex constraint, its global optimal solution can be determined analytically. We then extend the approach to the case of multiple sensors and propose an iterative algorithm, i.e., the Gauss–Seidel relaxation (GSR), to determine the next best sensing location for each sensor. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the GSR algorithm, whose computational complexity is linear in the number of sensors, achieves higher tracking accuracy than gradient descent methods and has performance that is indistinguishable from that of a grid-based exhaustive search, whose cost is exponential in the number of sensors. Human action recognition and annotation is an active research topic in computer vision. How to model various actions, varying with time resolution, visual appearance, and others, is a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a boosted exemplar learning (BEL) approach to model various actions in a weakly supervised manner, i.e., only action bag-level labels are provided but action instance level ones are not. The proposed BEL method can be summarized as three steps. First, for each action category, amount of class-specific candidate exemplars are learned through an optimization formulation considering their discrimination and co-occurrence. Second, each action bag is described as a set of similarities between its instances and candidate exemplars. Instead of simply using a heuristic distance measure, the similarities are decided by the exemplar-based classifiers through the multiple instance learning, in which a positive (or negative) video or image set is deemed as a positive (or negative) action bag and those frames similar to the given exemplar in Euclidean Space as action instances. Third, we formulate the selection of the most discriminative exemplars into a boosted feature selection framework and simultaneously obtain an action bag-based detector. Experimental results on two publicly available datasets: the KTH dataset and Weizmann dataset, demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed approach for action recognition. We also apply BEL to learn representations of actions by using images collected from the Web and use this knowledge to automatically annotate action in YouTube videos. Fuzzy control has been successfully applied in many cases to which conventional control algorithms are difficult to be applied. Recently, it was proven that fuzzy systems are capable of approximating any real continuous function to arbitrary accuracy. This result motivates us to use the fuzzy identifiers for nonlinear dynamic systems and then design the fuzzy supervised nonlinear PID controller based on the fuzzy system. There are two main objectives in this paper: (1) We use the Takagi and Sugeno's fuzzy models as an identifier for nonlinear dynamic systems, and derive the identification algorithm, (2) the fuzzy supervisor design method for tracking control is proposed based on this fuzzy system. In order to improve the dynamic response of the closed loop fuzzy model, the optimization of the performance of the fuzzy supervisor will be considered. To prove the potential applications of the proposed strategy, simulation was carried out for the speed control of a DC motor with serial excitation and a first order nonlinear process. The disassembly line is the best choice for automated disassembly of disposal products. Therefore, disassembly line should be designed and balanced so that it can work as efficiently as possible. In this paper, a mathematical model for the multi-objective disassembly line balancing problem is formalized firstly. Then, a novel multi-objective ant colony optimization (MOACO) algorithm is proposed for solving this multi-objective optimization problem. Taking into account the problem constraints, a solution construction mechanism based on the method of tasks assignment is utilized in the algorithm. Additionally, niche technology is used to embed in the updating operation to search the Pareto optimal solutions. Moreover, in order to find the Pareto optimal set, the MOACO algorithm uses the concept of Pareto dominance to dynamically filter the obtained non-dominated solution set. To validate the performance of algorithm, the proposed algorithm is measured over published results obtained from single-objective optimization approaches and compared with multi-objective ACO algorithm based on uniform design. We present a new computational approach to the problem of placing n identical nonoverlapping disks in the unit square in such a way that their radii are maximized. The problem has been studied in a large number of papers, from both a theoretical and a computational point of view. In this paper, we conjecture that the problem possesses a so-called funneling landscape, a feature that is commonly found in molecular conformation problems. Based on this conjecture, we develop a stochastic search algorithm that displays excellent numerical performance. Finding computationally efficient spectrum optimization methods for a multiuser digital subscriber line (DSL) environment is a key objective of dynamic spectrum management for DSL systems. For synchronous discrete multitone (DMT) based DSL systems, the computational complexity issue can be partially addressed using a dual optimization approach that decomposes the problem in the frequency domain. However, the decomposition approach fails whenever the DMT system is asynchronous, in which case the power allocations in adjacent frequency tones interfere with each other. This paper provides a mathematical model for intercarrier interference due to symbol misalignment and proposes ways to modify the dual method for spectrum optimization of asynchronous DSL systems. In this paper, we present a new model for deformations of shapes. A pseudolikelihood is based on the statistical distribution of the gradient vector field of the gray level. The prior distribution is based on the Probabilistic Principal Component Analysis (PPCA). We also propose a new model based on mixtures of PPCA that is useful in the case of greater variability in the shape. A criterion of global or local object specificity based on a preliminary color segmentation of the image is included into the model. The localization of a shape in an image is then viewed as minimizing the corresponding Gibbs field. We use the Exploration/Selection (E/S) stochastic algorithm in order to find the optimal deformation. This yields a new unsupervised statistical method for localization of shapes. In order to estimate the statistical parameters for the gradient vector field of the gray level, we use an Iterative Conditional Estimation (ICE) procedure. This paper presents an approach based on the constraints network to support collaborative design. Firstly, from the point of view of collaborative design, the model of the constraints network for coordination and optimization is studied. Secondly, a general consistency algorithm is designed to predict conflict and refine the intervals for parameter coordination, which verify the design stage early in the process and assist the designers in determining design variables to reduce the multidisciplinary iterations in collaborative design.
