In this paper, we continue describing the project and the experimentation of "Ricerca Operativa Applicazioni Reali" (ROAR; in English, Real Applications of Operations Research), a three-year project for higher secondary schools, introduced. ROAR is composed of three teaching units, addressed to Grades 10, 11, and 12, respectively, having the main aim to improve students' interest, motivation, and skills related to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics disciplines by integrating mathematics and computer science through operations research. In a previous paper, we reported on the design and implementation of the first unit, started in Spring 2021 at the scientific high school IIS Antonietti in Iseo (Brescia, Italy), in a Grade-10 class. Here, we focus on the second unit, carried out in Winter/Spring 2022 with the same students, now in a Grade-11 class. In particular, we describe objectives, prerequisites, topics and methods, the organization of the lectures, digital technologies used, and a challenging final project. Moreover, we analyze the feedback from students and teachers involved in the experimentation.

Truck hoisting detection constitutes a key focus in port security, for which no optimal resolution has been identified. To address the issues of high costs, susceptibility to weather conditions, and low accuracy in conventional methods for truck hoisting detection, a non-intrusive detection approach is proposed in this paper. The proposed approach utilizes a mathematical model and an extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) model. Electrical signals, including voltage and current, collected by Hall sensors are processed by the mathematical model, which augments their physical information. Subsequently, the dataset filtered by the mathematical model is used to train the XGBoost model, enabling the XGBoost model to effectively identify abnormal hoists. Improvements were observed in the performance of the XGBoost model as utilized in this paper. Finally, experiments were conducted at several stations. The overall false positive rate did not exceed 0.7% and no false negatives occurred in the experiments. The experimental results demonstrated the excellent performance of the proposed approach, which can reduce the costs and improve the accuracy of detection in container hoisting. Variable (feature) selection plays an important role in data analysis and mathematical modeling. This paper aims to address the significant lack of formal evaluation benchmarks for feature selection algorithms (FSAs). To evaluate FSAs effectively, controlled environments are required, and the use of synthetic datasets offers significant advantages. We introduce a set of ten synthetically generated datasets with known relevance, redundancy, and irrelevance of features, derived from various mathematical, logical, and geometric sources. Additionally, eight FSAs are evaluated on these datasets based on their relevance and novelty. The paper first introduces the datasets and then provides a comprehensive experimental analysis of the performance of the selected FSAs on these datasets including testing the FSAs' resilience on two types of induced data noise. The analysis has guided the grouping of the generated datasets into four groups of data complexity. Lastly, we provide public access to the generated datasets to facilitate bench-marking of new feature selection algorithms in the field via our Github repository. To address the problem of traditional speed loop controllers being unable to achieve rapid system convergence in the face of complex external operating conditions, this paper designs a new nonsingular fast terminal sliding mode control algorithm (NNFTSMC) for PMSM with a super twisting sliding mode perturbation observer (STSMO). Firstly, the mathematical models of PMSM for ideal case and parametric composite uptake are established. Secondly, a new non-singular fast terminal sliding mode control surface (NNFTSM) is proposed to design the PMSM speed-loop controller, which is also paired with the STSMO to observe the total system perturbation in real time and compensate the perturbation to the speed-loop NNFTSMC controller to form a new composite controller of NNFTSMC+STSMO. Finally, the proposed composite control algorithm of NNFTSMC+STSMO is verified to be effective in improving the control of the PMSM drive system during the parameters and load mutation by comparing simulation and RT-Lab semi-physical experiments. This article presents a pioneering mathematical model, fuzzy bipolar hypersoft (FBHS) sets, which combines the bipolarity of parameters with the fuzziness of data. Motivated by the need for a comprehensive framework capable of addressing uncertainty and variability in complex phenomena, our approach introduces a novel method for representing both the presence and absence of parameters through FBHS sets. By employing two mappings to estimate positive and negative fuzziness levels, we bridge the gap between bipolarity, fuzziness, and parameterization, allowing for more realistic simulations of multifaceted scenarios. Compared to existing models like bipolar fuzzy hypersoft (BFHS) sets, FBHS sets offer a more intuitive and user-friendly approach to modeling phenomena involving bipolarity, fuzziness, and parameterization. This advantage is underscored by a detailed comparison and a practical example illustrating FBHS sets' superiority in modeling such phenomena. Additionally, this paper provides an in-depth exploration of fundamental FBHS set operations, highlighting their robustness and applicability in various contexts. Finally, we demonstrate the practical utility of FBHS sets in problem-solving and introduce an algorithm for optimal object selection based on available information sets, further emphasizing the advantages of our proposed framework. This paper is concerned with two generalized inverse eigenvalue problems for a kind of pseudo‐Jacobi matrix. From a non‐Hermite matrix, an r × r Jacobi matrix, two distinct real eigenvalues, and part of the corresponding eigenvectors, an n × n pseudo‐Jacobi matrix is constructed. Furthermore, an n × n pseudo‐Jacobi matrix can be made by two different eigenpairs and a positive definite diagonal matrix. It is shown that a unique pseudo‐Jacobi matrix can be recovered from partial eigenpairs and certain special mixed eigendata. Two algorithms are provided for the reconstruction of such a pseudo‐Jacobi matrix, and illustrative numerical examples are presented to verify the proposed algorithms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the methodology for designing an asymmetrical four-phase 8/6 switched reluctance motor (SRM) that achieves approximately constant output power over a wide speed range is described. In an asymmetrical 8/6 SRM, orthogonal phase pairs are different in terms of the pole width and number of turns. The main comparison criterion between the asymmetrical and symmetrical 8/6 SRM is the power-speed characteristic, obtained for a given rated RMS phase current of the symmetrical drive. The obtained results demonstrate that the asymmetrical 8/6 SRM allows the shape of the power-speed characteristic to be modified, thereby extending the constant power region well beyond that of the symmetrical configuration with the same rated power level. To make a fair comparison between the asymmetrical and symmetrical 8/6 SRM drives, the converter volt-ampere rating, machine volume, slot fill factor, and ohmic losses per phase are kept constant in all analyzed cases. For determination of the optimal control parameters and maximal drive performance for both designs, the appropriate SRM mathematical model and differential evolution algorithm are used. The applied model includes all substantial non-linearities and mutual coupling between phases. Considerable effort is required to build mathematical models of large protein regulatory networks. Utilizing computational algorithms that guide model development can significantly streamline the process and enhance the reliability of the resulting models. In this article, we present a perturbation approach for developing data-centric Boolean models of cell cycle regulation. To evaluate networks, we assign a score based on their steady states and the dynamical trajectories corresponding to the initial conditions. Then, perturbation analysis is used to find new networks with lower scores, in which dynamical trajectories traverse through the correct cell cycle path with high frequency. We apply this method to refine Boolean models of cell cycle regulation in budding yeast and mammalian cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes the Love Evolution Algorithm (LEA), a novel evolutionary algorithm inspired by the stimulus–value–role theory. The optimization process of the LEA includes three phases: stimulus, value, and role. Both partners evolve through these phases and benefit from them regardless of the outcome of the relationship. This inspiration is abstracted into mathematical models for global optimization. The efficiency of the LEA is validated through numerical experiments with CEC2017 benchmark functions, outperforming seven metaheuristic algorithms as evidenced by the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the Friedman test. Further tests using the CEC2022 benchmark functions confirm the competitiveness of the LEA compared to seven state-of-the-art metaheuristics. Lastly, the study extends to real-world problems, demonstrating the performance of the LEA across eight diverse engineering problems. Ribonucleic acid (RNA) structure alignment is an important problem in computational biology to identify structural similarity of RNAs. Obtaining an efficient method for this problem is challenging due to the high computational time for the optimal solution and the low accuracy of a heuristic solution. In this paper, an efficient algorithm is proposed based on a mathematical model called longest arc-preserving common subsequence. The proposed algorithm uses a heuristic technique and high-performance computing to optimize the solution of RNA structure alignment, both in terms of the running time and the accuracy of the output. Extensive experimental studies on a multicore system are conducted to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm on two types of data. The first is simulated data that consists of 450 comparisons of RNA structures, while the second is real biological data that consists of 357 comparisons of RNA structures. The results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the best-known heuristic algorithm in terms of execution time, with a percentage improvement of 71% and increasing the length of the output, i.e., accuracy, by approximately 45% in all studied cases. The wheel slide protection control system for rail vehicles plays a crucial role in ensuring a consistent braking performance in all operating environments, making it a vital factor in the safety and efficiency of rail transportation. In this paper, a hybrid approach to wheel slide protection control is presented, which combines the rule-based control strategy and the model-based control methods using adhesion force estimation. Model-based control usually relies on mathematical models to characterize the vehicle dynamics, requiring online estimators to be designed or extra sensors to be added for practical application. Rule-based control operates on predefined rules and thresholds and the available data from vehicles in service. A comparative test was conducted between the traditional rule-based control strategy and the proposed combined control strategy using a semi-physical simulation test bench. The performance differences of the control strategies were analyzed from two perspectives: adhesion utilization and air consumption. It was observed that among the traditional 2-phase, 3-phase, 4-phase and the optimized 4-phase combined control method, the combined control strategy has the best adhesion utilization and the traditional 4-phase control strategy has the least air consumption. This paper extends the notion of weak convergence in metric spaces to the case of S-metric spaces. Moreover, some results on the weak convergence of fixed point iterations of Banach’s, Kannan’s, Chatterjea’s, Reich’s, Hardy and Roger’s types of contractions on S-metric spaces are obtained. Higher utilization of existing resources and facilities in order to increase efficiency and profitability is always one of the basic challenges for parallel processing systems and environments, and this challenge becomes more complicated when the system resources are heterogeneous. One way to achieve high efficiency and profitability of heterogeneous parallel systems is to schedule tasks optimally. In this paper, an extended tabu search-based scheduling algorithm (ESTS) is presented to improve the profitability of heterogeneous parallel systems, which can achieve suitable solutions in a short computational time. To evaluate the efficiency of the proposed solution, due to the lack of a suitable criterion to evaluate this problem, the obtained results are compared with both the results of an extended scheduling based on a genetic algorithm (ESGA) with a large number of chromosomes and a high number of generations, as well as an extended scheduling based on a simulated annealing algorithm (ESSA) with a linear temperature reduction. The benchmark files of different sizes were tested under the same conditions, and the comparison of results shows the superiority of the proposed solution in terms of profitability and computational time. Hybrid metaheuristics is one of the most exciting improvements in optimization and metaheuristic algorithms. A current research topic combines two algorithms to provide a more advanced solution to optimization problems. The present study applies a new approach called HWOA‐TTA which means a hybrid of the whale optimizer algorithm (WOA) and tiki‐taka algorithm (TTA). The hybrid WOA‐TTA combines the exploitation phase of WOA with the exploration phase of TTA. Two stages in the hybridized model are suggested. First, the WOA exploitation phase incorporates the TTA mechanism. Second, a new approach is included in the research phase to enhance the result with each iteration to a set of unconstrained benchmark test functions and engineering design applications. To verify the performance of the improved algorithm, thirteen benchmark functions have been used to compare HWOA‐TTA with the classical intelligent population algorithms (PSO, TTA, and WOA). A growing number of scalable and distributed methods are required to effectively simulate complicated events as computing needs in the research and industrial sectors keep growing. A novel approach for developing and accessing mathematically modeled methods in heterogeneous computing clusters is proposed in this study to meet this difficulty. The suggested methodology uses DRL based Parallel Computational model for the evaluation of Heterogenous computing clusters. The algorithms makes use of parallelization methods to split up the processing burden among several nodes, supporting the variety of topologies seen in contemporary computing clusters. Through the utilization of heterogeneous hardware parts such as CPUs, GPUs, and acceleration devices, the architecture seeks to maximize speed and minimize resource usage. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a comprehensive performance assessment is conducted. The evaluation encompasses scalability analysis, benchmarking, and comparisons against traditional homogeneous computing setups. Data has attributes, and synchronous changes between data and attributes are the basic characteristics of a type of data: under the condition of supplementing (deleting) some attributes, some data elements are deleted (supplemented) from data. The attributes of data elements follow the conjunctive normal form. Based on the dynamic mathematical model P-sets, firstly, the conception and generation criteria of embedded data are proposed, and the inference theory of embedded data are studied. Secondly, intelligent retrieval and retrieval theorems for embedded data are proposed. Then, intelligent retrieval and secure acquisition algorithms for embedded data are designed. The optimization problems in a fluid catalytic cracking process with dynamic constraints and conflicting objectives are challenging due to the complicated constraints and dynamic environments. The decision variables need to be reoptimized to obtain the best objectives when dynamic environments arise. To solve these problems, we established a mathematical model and proposed a dynamic constrained multiobjective optimization evolution algorithm for the fluid catalytic cracking process. In this algorithm, we design an offspring generation strategy based on minimax solutions, which can explore more feasible regions and converge quickly. Additionally, a dynamic response strategy based on population feasibility is proposed to improve the feasible and infeasible solutions by different perturbations, respectively. To verify the effectiveness of the algorithm, we test the algorithm on ten instances based on the hypervolume metric. Objective: Automated machine learning (autoML) platforms allow health care professionals to play an active role in the development of machine learning (ML) algorithms according to scientific or clinical needs. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate such a model for automated detection and grading of distal hand osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: A total of 13,690 hand radiographs from 2,863 patients within the Swiss Cohort of Quality Management (SCQM) and an external control data set of 346 non‐SCQM patients were collected and scored for distal interphalangeal OA (DIP‐OA) using the modified Kellgren/Lawrence (K/L) score. Giotto (Learn to Forecast [L2F]) was used as an autoML platform for training two convolutional neural networks for DIP joint extraction and subsequent classification according to the K/L scores. A total of 48,892 DIP joints were extracted and then used to train the classification model. Heatmaps were generated independently of the platform. User experience of a web application as a provisional user interface was investigated by rheumatologists and radiologists. Results: The sensitivity and specificity of this model for detecting DIP‐OA were 79% and 86%, respectively. The accuracy for grading the correct K/L score was 75%, with a κ score of 0.76. The accuracy per DIP‐OA class differed, with 86% for no OA (defined as K/L scores 0 and 1), 71% for a K/L score of 2, 46% for a K/L score of 3, and 67% for a K/L score of 4. Similar values were obtained in an independent external test set. Qualitative and quantitative user experience testing of the web application revealed a moderate to high demand for automated DIP‐OA scoring among rheumatologists. Conversely, radiologists expressed a low demand, except for the use of heatmaps. Conclusion: AutoML platforms are an opportunity to develop clinical end‐to‐end ML algorithms. Here, automated radiographic DIP‐OA detection is both feasible and usable, whereas grading among individual K/L scores (eg, for clinical trials) remains challenging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phasor measurement units (PMUs) are deployed at power grid nodes around the transmission grid, determining precise power system monitoring conditions. In real life, it is not realistic to place a PMU at every power grid node; thus, the lowest PMU number is optimally selected for the full observation of the entire network. In this study, the PMU placement model is reconsidered, taking into account single- and multi-capacity placement models rather than the well-studied PMU placement model with an unrestricted number of channels. A restricted number of channels per monitoring device is used, instead of supposing that a PMU is able to observe all incident buses through the transmission connectivity lines. The optimization models are declared closely to the power dominating set and minimum edge cover problem in graph theory. These discrete optimization problems are directly related with the minimum set covering problem. Initially, the allocation model is declared as a constrained mixed-integer linear program implemented by mathematical and stochastic algorithms. Then, the 0 / 1 integer linear problem is reformulated into a non-convex constraint program to find optimality. The mathematical models are solved either in binary form or in the continuous domain using specialized optimization libraries, and are all implemented in YALMIP software in conjunction with MATLAB. Mixed-integer linear solvers, nonlinear programming solvers, and heuristic algorithms are utilized in the aforementioned software packages to locate the global solution for each instance solved in this application, which considers the transformation of the existing power grids to smart grids. Cardiac digital twins provide a physics and physiology informed framework to deliver personalized medicine. However, high-fidelity multi-scale cardiac models remain a barrier to adoption due to their extensive computational costs. Artificial Intelligence-based methods can make the creation of fast and accurate whole-heart digital twins feasible. We use Latent Neural Ordinary Differential Equations (LNODEs) to learn the pressure-volume dynamics of a heart failure patient. Our surrogate model is trained from 400 simulations while accounting for 43 parameters describing cell-to-organ cardiac electromechanics and cardiovascular hemodynamics. LNODEs provide a compact representation of the 3D-0D model in a latent space by means of an Artificial Neural Network that retains only 3 hidden layers with 13 neurons per layer and allows for numerical simulations of cardiac function on a single processor. We employ LNODEs to perform global sensitivity analysis and parameter estimation with uncertainty quantification in 3 hours of computations, still on a single processor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The efficiency of The International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3) in reflecting patients' disability has recently been questioned. This prompts consideration that clinical features beyond pain may more accurately indicate the extent of underlying brain impairment than the mere frequency of headache days. Important cognitive dysfunctions and psychological impairment have been reported in burdensome cases of migraine, and the presence of these alterations has been associated with biological changes in the nervous system. This study aimed to compare migraine-related disability within a specific patient group, classified using ICHD-3 criteria or classified based on findings from a neuropsychological evaluation using machine learning. Additionally, a complementary voxel-based morphometry (VBM) comparison was conducted to explore potential neuroanatomical differences between the resulting groups. Patients and methods: The study included episodic and chronic migraine patients seeking consultation at a specialized headache department. A neuropsychological evaluation protocol, encompassing validated standardized tests for cognition, anxiety, depression, perceived stress, and headache-related impact (HIT-6) and disability (MIDAS), was administered. Results from this evaluation were input into an automated K-means clustering algorithm, with a predefined K=2 for comparative purposes. A supplementary Voxel-based Morphometry (VBM) evaluation was conducted to investigate neuroanatomical contrasts between the two distinct grouping configurations. Results: The study involved 111 participants, with 49 having chronic migraine and 62 having episodic migraine. Seventy-four patients were assigned to cluster one, and 37 patients were assigned to cluster two. Cluster two exhibited significantly higher levels of depression, anxiety, and perceived stress, and performed worse in alternating and focalized attention tests. Differences in HIT-6 and MIDAS scores between episodic and chronic migraine patients did not reach statistical significance (HIT-6: 64.39 (±7,31) vs 62.92 (±11,61); p= 0. 42 / MIDAS: 73.63 (±68,61) vs 84.33 (±63,62); p=0.40). In contrast, patients in cluster two exhibited significantly higher HIT-6 (62.32 (±10,11) vs 66.57 (±7,21); p=0.03) and MIDAS (68.69 (±62,58) vs 97.68 (±70,31); p=0.03) scores than patients in cluster one. Furthermore, significant differences in grey matter volume between the two clusters were noted, particularly involving the precuneus, while differences between chronic and episodic migraine patients did not withstand correction for multiple comparisons. Conclusions: The classification of migraine patients based on neuropsychological characteristics demonstrates a more effective separation of groups in terms of disability compared to categorizing them based on the chronic or episodic diagnosis of ICHD-3. Parkinson's disease (PD) and essential tremor (ET) are prevalent movement disorders that mainly affect elderly people, presenting diagnostic challenges due to shared clinical features. While both disorders exhibit distinct speech patterns—hypokinetic dysarthria in PD and hyperkinetic dysarthria in ET—the efficacy of speech assessment for differentiation remains unexplored. Developing technology for automatic discrimination could enable early diagnosis and continuous monitoring. However, the lack of data for investigating speech behavior in these patients has inhibited the development of a framework for diagnostic support. In addition, phonetic variability across languages poses practical challenges in establishing a universal speech assessment system. Therefore, it is necessary to develop models robust to the phonetic variability present in different languages worldwide. We propose a method based on Gaussian mixture models to assess domain adaptation from models trained in German and Spanish to classify PD and ET patients in Czech. We modeled three different speech dimensions: articulation, phonation, and prosody and evaluated the models' performance in both bi-class and tri-class classification scenarios (with the addition of healthy controls). Our results show that a fusion of the three speech dimensions achieved optimal results in binary classification, with accuracies up to 81.4 and 86.2% for monologue and /pa-ta-ka/ tasks, respectively. In tri-class scenarios, incorporating healthy speech signals resulted in accuracies of 63.3 and 71.6% for monologue and /pa-ta-ka/ tasks, respectively. Our findings suggest that automated speech analysis, combined with machine learning is robust, accurate, and can be adapted to different languages to distinguish between PD and ET patients.
