The papers of Sir George Arthur are important to historical research in several countries. For this reason they have been divided. The Canadian papers were considered of such importance that the Toronto Public Library Board of Trustees, assisted by the generosity of the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the University of Toronto Press, has undertaken their publication, under the editorship of the late Chief Librarian, Charles Rupert Sanderson, LL.D., M.A., B.Sc. They were first published in six paper-bound parts, and then in the present three volumes. The emphasis in Volume One is on the restoration of order after the Rebellion of 1837, and the defence of the province against invasion and brigandry. The trials of the political prisoners and the prevention of a Torv reign of terror were two problems complicated by differences of opinion with Lord Durham. Defending the border and stamping out lawlessness were complicated by the attitude of the Commander of the Forces, Sir John Colborne, who vacillated between blind optimism and equally blind panic. Volume One closes with the attacks at Prescott and Windsor.

The inner workings of Lord Sydenham's form of practical politics are shown clearly in the manipulating of the elections for the united House of Assembly, and in the choosing of the Executive Council. Robert Baldwin's place in that Council brought the whole question of responsible government into prominence, as Lord Durham's Report had done two years earlier. When Arthur left the province in March, 1841, Sydenham was confident that constitutional stability had at last been achieved. A disturbing feature of Arthur's last days in Canada was the repercussions of the McLeod case, and this too is discussed at length in Volume Three of the papers.

Preserving on Paper is a critical edition of three seventeenth-century receipt books–handwritten manuals that included a combination of culinary recipes, medical remedies, and household tips which documented the work of women at home. Kristine Kowalchuk argues that receipt books served as a form of folk writing, where knowledge was shared and passed between generations. These texts played an important role in the history of women's writing and literacy and contributed greatly to issues of authorship, authority, and book history. Kowalchuk's revelatory interdisciplinary study offers unique insights into early modern women's writings and the original sharing economy.

As a prolific scholar and theologian, Bernard Lonergan authored a significant amount of material aside from the works with which he is commonly associated. Shorter Papers is a collection of lesser-known items written by Lonergan over the course of his career. Together, they offer privileged access to the author's thought and work, as well as a glimpse at some of his most personal qualities.The items in this volume extend from some of the earliest writings – the Blandyke Papers, for instance, which predates any of the materials represented in the Collected Works – to pieces written near the end of Lonergan's life. Organized chronologically, they give an impression of his development as a writer, his ever-strengthening religious commitment, and his role as teacher. As a sampling of pieces from the late 1920s to the early 1980s, Shorter Papers testifies to the cumulative impact of Lonergan's work, as well as to the amazing continuity that he maintained throughout his career as an author and intellectual.

These papers on key issues in intellectual history derive from those delivered at a conference held at the University of Toronto in May 1973 to honour the bicentenary of James Mill's birth and the centenary of John Stuart Mill's death. Nine authorities -- J.H. Burns, Karl W. Britton, J.B. Schneewind, George J. Stigler, Samuel Hollander, L.S. Feuer, Joseph Hamburger, Edward Alexander, and John M. Robson -- were invited to discuss what they took to be significant aspects of the thought of the two Mills. While history, philosophy, economics, social science, and the history of thought were the focal points for the conference, the contributors were free to choose their own topics and approaches. One of the most striking aspects of Mill scholarship that emerges in this volume is the applicability of their ideas to modern problems. These papers are not final assessments; they are individual and independent contributions to Mill studies that clearly show the vitality of both Mill's thought and the certainty that it will continue to influence and change the ways in which we think about the human condition.

The mass production and dissemination of printed materials were unparalleled in England during the 1640s and 50s. While theatrical performance traditionally defined literary culture, print steadily gained ground, becoming more prevalent and enabling the formation of various networks of writers, readers, and consumers of books.In conjunction with an evolving print culture, seventeenth-century England experienced a rise of political instability and religious dissent, the closing of the theatres, and the emergence of a middle class. Elizabeth Sauer examines how this played out in the nation's book and print industry with an emphasis on performative writings, their materiality, reception, and their extra-judicial function. ‘Paper-contestations'and Textual Communities in England challenges traditional readings of literary history, offers new insights into drama and its transgression of boundaries, and proposes a fresh approach to the politics of consensus and contestation that animated seventeenth-century culture and that distinguishes current scholarly debates about this period.

A companion to Philosophical and Theological Papers 1958–1964 (Volume 6 in the Collected Works of Bernard Lonergan series), this anthology contains Lonergan's lectures on philosophy and theology given during the later period of his life, 1965–1980. These papers document his development in the discipline during the years leading up to the publication of Method in Theology, and beyond to 1980 when he was more engaged in his writings and seminars on macroeconomics. Philosophical and Theological Papers 1965–1980 is divided into five sections, forming units on the basis of dates. The three central sections are each a set of lectures respectively given at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Gonzaga University in Spokane, and Trinity College (University of Toronto). Although there is some repetition amongst the lecture sets and in relation to other more familiar works, this repetition displays occasional new turns of phrase that the careful reader will note. In at least one instance, familiar material suddenly opens out onto expressions not to be found anywhere else in Lonergan's work. Other very interesting developments regard the movement from speaking of the immutability of dogmas to their permanence of meaning and the permutations among'real self-transcendence,''performative self-transcendence,'and'moral self-transcendence.'

For forty years, historians have argued that early twentieth-century provincial governments in Canada were easily manipulated by the industrialists who developed Canada's natural resources, such as pulpwood, water power, and minerals. As the imminent danger of attack from without and within receded, the question of the future form of government of the colony became predominant. In the spring of 1839 Lord Durham's Report reached Upper Canada, and its recommendations aroused heated controversy. Sydenham's appointment confirmed the belief that the report was going to be implemented, and Volume Two ends with the passing of the measure for union in both houses of the Upper Canadian legislature.

High examines the work-life histories of fifty paper mill workers and managers, as well as city officials, to gain an in-depth understanding of the impact of the formation and dissolution of a culture of industrialism. Oral history and memory are at the heart of One Job Town, challenging us to rethink the relationship between the past and the present in what was formerly known as the industrialized world.

Micropolitics and Canadian Business explores the internal structure of industry politics in contemporary Canada. This'micropolitics'approach offers a revealing set of conceptual tools and models that illuminate the politics of everyday business at the industry, firm, and policy issue levels. It builds wider contexts in which the concrete particulars of business-government relations can be explored and understood in a systematic fashion. The approach developed is a comparative one. The book examines three industries—paper, steel, and airlines—carefully chosen to represent a revealing cross-section of a vast economic field covering the primary (resource), secondary (manufacturing), and tertiary (service) sectors of the economy. In addition, one industry (pulp and paper) is primarily export-oriented, another (steel) focuses mainly on domestic sales, and the third (air transport) is strongly grounded in both. The book applies to each a common set of questions and applies a similar set of methods. Separate chapters on each industry begin with a brief review of current industry concerns, followed by a historical and structural survey of that industry. Each chapter continues with studies of two leading firms, highlighting their internal politics and their strategic orientations. Since firms are the building blocks of industry, they tell us much about the larger structures of political power. Finally, each chapter examines two significant public policy controversies whose scope extends beyond core business boundaries. Micropolitics and Canadian Business specifically analyzes three industries; however, the approach used may be applied to a much wider universe of companies and sectors. Throughout, this book furthers our understanding of the complex contexts of business politics. As such, it will be of interest to both students and practitioners of business and government relations.

Do Canadian cities have a distinctive form? How has this form evolved over time; and what has been the impact of growth, transportation changes and differing lifestyles on the contemporary Canadian urban environment? The research summarized in the present volume is directed at these kinds of questions. This book is an anthology of research papers and reports building around a common theme: urban development in Central Canada. Within this context, specific interests focus on the spatial structure of the city, land use distributions, patterns of population density and intercity migration, networks of interaction, communities, and lives. Textual Agency examines the massive proliferation of poetic texts in fifteenth-century Spain, focusing on the important yet little-known cancionero poetry – the largest poetic corpus of the European Middle Ages. Ana M. Gómez-Bravo situates this cultural production within its social, political, and material contexts. She places the different forms of document production fostered by a shifting political and urban model alongside the rise in literacy and access to reading materials and spaces.At the core of the book lies an examination of both the materials of writing and how human agents used and transformed them, giving way to a textual agency that pertains not only to writers, but to the inscribed paper. Gómez-Bravo also explores how authorial and textual agency were competing forces in the midst of an era marked by the institution of the Inquisition, the advent of the absolutist state, the growth of cities, and the constitution of the Spanish nation.

In the mid- to late-1930s, while he was a student at the Gregorian University in Rome, Bernard Lonergan wrote a series of eight essays on the philosophy and theology of history. These essays foreshadow a number of the major themes in his life's work. The significance of these essays is enormous, not only for an understanding of the later trajectory of Lonergan's own work but also for the development of a contemporary systematic theology. In an important entry from 1965 in his archival papers, Lonergan wrote that the'mediated object'of systematics is Geschichte or the history that is lived and written about. In the same entry, he stated that the'doctrines'that this systematic theology would attempt to understand are focused on'redemption.'The seeds of such a theology are planted in the current volume, where the formulae that are so pronounced in his later work first appear. Students of Lonergan's work will find their understanding of his philosophy profoundly affected by the essays in this volume.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the Russian empire opened the grasslands of southern Ukraine to agricultural settlement. Among the immigrants who arrived were communities of Prussian Mennonites, recruited as “model colonists” to bring progressive agricultural methods to the east. Transformation on the Southern Ukrainian Steppe documents the Tsarist Mennonite experience through the papers of Johann Cornies (1789–1848), an ambitious and energetic leader of the Mennonite colony of Molochna.Cornies was well connected in the imperial government, and his papers offer a window not just into the world of the Molochna Mennonites but also into the Tsarist state's relationship with the national minorities of the frontier: Mennonites, Doukhbors, Nogai Tartars, and Jews. This work is primarily concerned with the last great campaign in Daniel O'Connell's career and its impact on British and Irish politics. The eighteen-forties were marked by a formidable agitation to have the Act of Union repealed and an independent Irish legislature restored. In attacking the Union between Great Britain and Ireland, O'Connell encountered the sustained opposition of Sir Robert Peel and a study of the conflict between the two men is an important feature of the book. Dr. Nowlan also discusses the rise of the Young Ireland movement and the disputes between the Young Irelands and O'Connell. The political developments during the dark years of the Great Famine are examined and a close study is made of the events leading up to the Irish rebellion of 1848 and of the relations between Irish nationalists and French republicans during that year of revolutions. The Irish problems of the eighteen-forties had a direct influence on British politics throughout the period. Using a wide range of private and official papers, Dr. Nowlan analyses the changing attitudes of the Peel and Russell ministries to the challenge of repeal and to the social and religious grievances that lay behind the repeal agitation.

In the late 1790s, British Prime Minister William Pitt created a crisis of representation when he pressured the British Parliament to relieve the Bank of England from its obligations to convert paper notes into coin.
