ABSTRACT Objective Methods Results Conclusions We aimed to investigate the pattern, risk, and treatment of subsequent events after curative‐intent treatment of lip cancer.This retrospective cohort study included 313 patients treated for lip cancer from 2011 to 2021 in a tertiary oncological center.After a median follow‐up time of 29.16 months, 145 (46.32%) patients presented with second primary tumors, 93% of which were skin carcinomas. Locoregional recurrence occurred in 7.9% of cases, with 2.5% with nodal recurrence. The 1‐, 5‐, and 10‐year cumulative second primary tumor probabilities were 32.8%, 60.92%, and 70.92%, respectively. A higher risk was observed in elderly patients and basal cell carcinoma cases located on the cutaneous surface of the upper lip. Regional metastasis but not second primary tumors negatively impacted survival.Our study helps fill a literature gap, structuring specific recommendations regarding evaluations and follow‐up protocols for patients with lip cancer. Since cutaneous second primary tumors were the most common second event, standard skin examination is key. Age and histology were significant predictors for second primary tumors. Background: Melanoma is the third most common type of skin cancer in Mexico and represents 75% of skin cancer deaths. Dermoscopy is a diagnostic tool that increases early detection of melanoma compared to naked eye examination. Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the clinical, dermoscopic and histological characteristics of patients with a confirmed diagnosis of cutaneous melanoma treated at the "La Raza" National Medical Center. Material and methods: A retrospective, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out from March 1998 to December 2013, with 187 histologically confirmed cases, considering: sex, age, skin phototype, history, topography of the lesion, dermoscopic pattern, metastasis at the time of diagnosis and histological subtype, Breslow index and Clark index, using the chi-square test as a non-parametric statistical method to analyze the data obtained. Results: Most patients had skin phototype III and the most affected location was the lower limb. Clinically, acral lentiginous melanomas and nodular melanomas were the most observed. The most common dermoscopic finding was the multicomponent pattern. Clinically and histologically, the most frequent subtype associated with metastasis was nodular melanoma. Acral lentiginous melanoma was more common among patients without metastasis. Conclusions: Unfortunately, melanoma is still diagnosed in advanced stages in Mexico; for its early recognition, training in the use of dermoscopy and greater awareness about melanoma in the Mexican population must be encouraged. Background: Skin cancer is a primary health concern in renal transplant recipients (RTRs). Existing research mainly stems from North America, Europe, and Australia, with limited data from Latin America. Methods: This 56‐year (1967–2023) retrospective cohort study explores skin cancer incidence in Mexican RTRs. Our objective was to assess the long‐term incidence of malignant cutaneous neoplasms in Mexican RTRs. Results: Over 56 years, 1642 RTRs (58% male) were studied. Median follow‐up was 8.4 years; median age at transplantation was 32.6 years. Skin cancer incidence was 6.6% (95% CI: 5.5–7.9), with an incidence density rate of 6.5 (95% CI: 5.4–7.9) per 1000 person‐years and a median latency of 9.8 years. Incidence increased with longer transplantation‐related immunosuppression (TRI), with a relative risk for >30 years of TRI of 4.8 (95% CI: 2.6–9.1) for any skin cancer and 7.5 (95% CI: 3.8–14.6) for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). SCC was the most common malignancy (76.1%), followed by basal cell carcinomas (BCC), with a 3.6:1 ratio. Metastatic SCC occurred in 6.5% of skin cancer patients, with a skin cancer‐related mortality rate of 2.7%. Limitations of the study include its single‐center and retrospective design and unassessed factors such as human papillomavirus infection and sun exposure. Conclusions: Our study provides unique insights into the epidemiology of skin cancer among Mexican RTRs. It constitutes the largest cohort of skin cancer cases among RTRs in Mexico and, to our knowledge, in Latin America. Asthma is a respiratory disorder caused by airway inflammation which may worsen after allergen exposure. Recent cohort studies demonstrate a positive association between skin cancer and asthma or hay fever (allergy to outdoor allergens such as pollen). Nationally-representative data for adults in the United States remains limited. We aimed to characterize skin cancer prevalence among individuals in the United States who have asthma or hay fever. To achieve this aim, we extracted nationwide cross-sectional data from 16,277 adult participants (total survey-weighted sample = 174,765,931) of the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1988 to 1994. This study uses survey-weighted regression to compare the nationwide prevalence of skin cancer among participants with or without a history of asthma or hay fever. Sensitivity analysis examined the influence of sex, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, chronic bronchitis or emphysema, geographical region, urban proximity, and oral glucocorticoid use. Of the included participants, the age-adjusted prevalence of skin cancer was 7.2%, similar to national estimates. Skin cancer prevalence was higher among participants who had asthma with hay fever (adjusted prevalence ratio, 1.79; 95% confidence interval, 1.16, 2.76), but not among participants with asthma only or hay fever only. Similarly, skin cancer prevalence was higher for those with asthma and positive pollen allergen skin prick testing (SPT), but not for those with hay fever and positive pollen SPT. No association was noted between skin cancer and wheezing triggered by pollen. ABSTRACT Dyskeratosis congenita (DC) is a rare inherited bone marrow disease that classically presents with the triad of oral leukoplakia, nail dystrophy, and reticular hyperpigmentation. It is most commonly caused by a defect in the DKC1 gene involved in telomere stability. Malignant progression of oral leukoplakia to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is rare in DC, especially in younger patients, and cutaneous SCC is only reported in 1.5% of cases of DC. Here we report a case of a 12‐year‐old female with a familial heterozygous RTEL1 (regulator of telomere elongation helicase 1) gene mutation associated with a severe phenotype of DC characterized by multiple cutaneous SCCs. Melanoma is the most aggressive type of skin cancer and is responsible for the majority of deaths from skin cancer. Therapeutic advances in the last few decades, notably the development of novel targeted therapies and immunotherapies have significantly improved patient outcomes; nonetheless, these options remain limited due to the onset of resistance to treatment modalities and relapse. The aim of this study was to assess, through a systematic review, the status of infrared thermography (IRT) as a diagnostic tool for skin neoplasms of the head and neck region and in order to validate its effectiveness in differentiating benign and malignant lesions. A search was carried out in the LILACS, PubMed/MEDLINE, SCOPUS, Web of Science and EMBASE databases including studies published between 2004 and 2024, written in the Latin-Roman alphabet. Accuracy studies with patients aged 18 years or over presenting benign and malignant lesions in the head and neck region that evaluated the performance of IRT in differentiating these lesions were included. Lesions of mesenchymal origin and studies that did not mention histopathological diagnosis were excluded. The systematic review protocol was registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42023416079). Reviewers independently analyzed titles, abstracts, and full-texts. After extracting data, the risk of bias of the selected studies was assessed using the QUADAS − 2 tool. Results were narratively synthesized and the certainty of evidence was measured using the GRADE approach. The search resulted in 1,587 records and three studies were included. Only one of the assessed studies used static IRT, while the other two studies used cold thermal stress. All studies had an uncertain risk of bias. In general, studies have shown wide variation in the accuracy of IRT for differentiating between malignant and benign lesions, with a low level of certainty in the evidence for both specificity and sensitivity. Cancer remains a significant global health concern, with increasing genetic and metabolic irregularities linked to its onset. Among various forms of cancer, skin cancer, including squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma, is on the rise worldwide, often triggered by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The propensity of skin cancer to metastasize highlights the importance of early detection for successful treatment. This narrative review explores the evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) in diagnosing head and neck skin cancers from both radiological and pathological perspectives. In the past two decades, AI has made remarkable progress in skin cancer research, driven by advances in computational capabilities, digitalization of medical images, and radiomics data. AI has shown significant promise in image-based diagnosis across various medical domains. In dermatology, AI has played a pivotal role in refining diagnostic and treatment strategies, including genomic risk assessment. This technology offers substantial potential to aid primary clinicians in improving patient outcomes. Studies have demonstrated AI's effectiveness in identifying skin lesions, categorizing them, and assessing their malignancy, contributing to earlier interventions and better prognosis. The rising incidence and mortality rates of skin cancer, coupled with the high cost of treatment, emphasize the need for early diagnosis. Background Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is one of the most challenging cutaneous cancers in surgical clinic practice. Excision with negative margins is essential for effective disease control. However, wide surgical margins and maximal tissue conservation are mutually exclusive. Mohs micrographic surgery conserves tissue but is time-consuming. Thus, we developed a novel specimen radiography system that can be used intraoperatively. Aims To introduce a specimen radiography system for evaluating intraoperative surgical margins in patients with dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans. Methods Since September 2017, we have treated seven biopsy-proven cases of local DFSPs via local excision with surgical margins of 2–4 cm. During operations, the operative specimens were screened using the specimen radiography system. All surgical specimens were pathologically examined intraoperatively. Results Five patients were men and two were women, of median age 36 years. The mean radiographic screening time was 9.7 ± 2.3 min. Radiographically negative margins were confirmed intraoperatively. The minimal margin width ranged from 5.0 to 35.4 mm (mean width 16.9 ± 10.4 mm). The intraoperatively negative radiographic margins were consistent with those revealed by postoperative pathology. The minimal pathological margin width ranged from 4.0 to 34.5 mm (mean 16.6 ± 10.1 mm) and was not significantly different from the intraoperative data. Limitations The sample size was small and positive or negative predictive values were not calculated. Conclusions We introduce a novel method of intraoperative surgical margin assessment for DFSP patients. It may find broad clinical and research applications during oncoplastic surgery. Issue Addressed: Farmers experience skin cancer and die from melanoma at significantly higher rates than the general Australian population. This study examined Australian farmers' engagement with self‐skin examinations (SSE), participation in clinical skin examinations (CSE) by a health professional, and self‐reported barriers to engagement with these important skin cancer detection practices. Methods: A cross‐sectional, mixed‐methods design was used. Australian farmers were recruited through an industry‐based organisation representing livestock farmers. Farmers (N = 498; 22–89 years; 83.1% male) responded to a paper‐based survey that included closed‐ and open‐ended questions. Results: Farmers reported engagement with self‐conducted SSE and routine CSE that was comparable to findings in the general population, but 29.4% of farmers reported that they had not sought a CSE as soon as possible after noticing changes to their skin. Farmers reported a range of barriers to SSE, including physical difficulties examining their skin, difficulties identifying changes in their skin, forgetfulness, and lack of motivation. Barriers to CSE included accessibility, cost, difficulties finding the right doctor, and avoidance and complacency. Conclusions: There is a need to make clinical skin cancer detection more accessible to farmers, in addition to promoting self‐skin examination and help‐seeking behaviours within this at risk population. So What?: Novel approaches are needed to address systemic barriers faced by Australian farmers. These may include the use of teledermatology or artificial intelligence to assist with CSE. The detrimental effects of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on human skin are well-documented, encompassing DNA damage, oxidative stress, and an increased risk of carcinogenesis. Conventional photoprotective measures predominantly rely on filters, which scatter or absorb UV radiation, yet fail to address the cellular damage incurred post-exposure. To fill this gap, antioxidant molecules and DNA–repair enzymes have been extensively researched, offering a paradigm shift towards active photoprotection capable of both preventing and reversing UV–induced damage. In the current review, we focused on "active photoprotection", assessing the state-of-the-art, latest advancements and scientific data from clinical trials and in vivo models concerning the use of DNA-repair enzymes and naturally occurring antioxidant molecules. Population‐based studies have demonstrated a high risk of second cancers, especially of the skin, among patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). We describe age‐standardised incidence ratios (SIRs) of second primary malignancies (SPM) in Australian patients with relapsed/refractory CLL treated with at least two lines of therapy, including ibrutinib. From December 2014 to November 2017, 156 patients were identified from 13 sites enrolled in the Australasian Lymphoma and Related Diseases Registry, and 111 had follow‐up data on rates of SPM. At 38.4 months from ibrutinib therapy commencement, 25% experienced any SPM. SIR for melanoma and all cancers (excluding nonmelanomatous skin cancers) were 15.8 (95% confidence interval (CI): 7.0–35.3) and 4.6 (95% CI: 3.1–6.9) respectively. Basosquamous carcinoma (BSC) is a rare form of non-melanoma skin cancer with significant invasive and metastatic potential. This malignancy presents unique challenges in diagnostic and therapeutic options given its ambiguous clinical nature. While there are documented cases of BSC involving the aerodigestive tract and sun-exposed areas like the head and neck, cutaneous BSC in the gluteal and perineal regions remains quite rare. In this report, we provide an overview of the epidemiology, clinical presentation, treatment modalities, and prognosis of this disease. We describe a case of a 71-year-old female who presented for evaluation of a symptomatic right-sided cutaneous lesion in the inner gluteal and perineal region. Upfront surgical resection was pursued for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Final pathology of the lesion revealed infiltrating BSC with negative margins. Although BSC typically presents in sun-exposed areas, the presentation in this patient in a non-sun-exposed area makes this presentation unusual. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Teledermatology provides a platform for swift specialist advice without the potential need for face‐to‐face review. Our objectives were to investigate the effectiveness, accuracy and diagnostic concordance of the platform with regard to the remote management of skin conditions. Methods: We undertook a single‐centre, retrospective chart review over a 1‐year period, comprising a total of 1703 teledermatology referrals. Two physicians independently assessed the diagnostic concordance between telederm diagnosis (TD), in‐person diagnosis (ID) and histopathological diagnosis (HD). Results: There were a total of 1703 TD referrals, of which 341 were rejected, leaving 1362 referrals for evaluation. Sixty‐five per cent of these referrals were managed remotely and discharged with advice, although 4.6% of these were later re‐referred for an in‐person review. A total of 20% of referrals were rejected, of which the majority was due to a lack of appropriate imaging. The total concordance of TD compared to ID was 76.4%. When comparing the TD and ID/HD, we obtained a Kappa value of 0.636 indicating substantial agreement. In terms of accuracy, there were 49 biopsy‐proven skin cancers picked up by the service in this cohort of data. Of these, 61.2% were given an accurate diagnosis on first impression via teledermatology, 14.3% were given a different diagnosis but correctly categorised as skin cancer and 24.5% could not be assessed; however, they were triaged and escalated based upon clinical suspicion. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that teledermatology is an effective platform in terms of diagnosis and remote management, with adequate diagnostic accuracy and concordance to in‐person diagnosis. A 47-year-old male patient presented with multiple squamous and basal cell carcinomas on the anterior chest, back, and left cheek. The patient experienced odorous discharge from the tumors. Surgical excision was planned, beginning with the anterior chest squamous cell carcinoma. An extensive 32×30 cm cutaneous defect was created, which was covered by a bilateral deep inferior epigastric perforator and pedicled latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flaps. The basal cell carcinomas on the back and squamous cell carcinoma on the left cheek were serially excised, after which the left cheek wound required flap coverage. Postoperative complications such as venous thrombosis and infection led to several reoperations, yet the extensive defect was successfully reconstructed. No local recurrence developed during 31 months of follow-up. We report this case to demonstrate that although the wide excision of very large skin cancers may result in extensive and challenging defects as large as 5.8% of the total body surface area, coverage with appropriate flaps may lead to successful oncologic outcomes and improve the patient's quality of life. Objective(s): Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer and the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, affecting sun-exposed areas like the face. Surgery is the main treatment, focusing on safe and minimally invasive methods for better outcomes. Technology has enabled the development of artificial skin substitutes for tissue repair. Tissue engineering uses scaffolds to create functional replacements. This project aims to create an alginate-based hydrogel with PEG-coated gold nanoparticles. Materials and Methods: The project extensively explored the modification of alginate hydrogels with PEG-coated gold nanoparticles, involving the synthesis of gold nanoparticles, their integration with the polymer, and the subsequent preparation of the concentrated hybrid hydrogel. Utilizing various physicochemical techniques, such as UV-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the fabrication process was optimized and characterized. Results: The successful synthesis of the hybrid biomaterial was achieved through robust and highly reproducible methods. The MTT assay results offered valuable insights into the biocompatibility and safety of the PEG-coated gold nanoparticle-loaded alginate-based films. The incorporation of PEG-coated gold nanoparticles allowed for potential drug loading on the nanoparticle surface and, consequently, within the hydrogel. Cellular assays were conducted to assess the potential applications of this novel biomaterial. Conclusion: The addition of polyethylene glycol made it possible to load different drugs onto the gold nanoparticles and also within the hydrogel. Background: The medial canthal region features a complex three-dimensional and internal anatomical structure. When reconstructing a defect in this area, it is crucial to consider both functional and aesthetic aspects, which presents significant challenges. Generally, local flaps are preferred for reconstruction; however, skin grafts can be used when local flaps are not feasible. Therefore, we conducted a comparative analysis of surgical outcomes skin grafts when local flaps were not feasible, to determine which surgical method is more effective for medial canthal region reconstruction. Methods: Twenty-five patients who underwent medial canthal region reconstruction using skin grafts or local flaps from 2002 to 2021 were enrolled. Patient information was obtained from medical records. Five plastic surgeons evaluated the surgical outcomes based on general appearance, color, contour, and symmetry. Results: Skin grafts were used in eight patients and local flaps were used in 13. Combined reconstructions were employed in four cases. Minor complications arose in four cases but improved with conservative treatment. No major complications were reported. Recurrence of the skin cancer was noted in two cases. All categories showed higher scores for the local flap compared to both skin graft and combined reconstruction; however, the differences were not statistically significant respectively. Conclusion: The choice of appropriate surgical methods for reconstructing defects in the medial canthal region depends on various factors, including the patient's overall health, the size and depth of the defect, and the degree of involvement of surrounding structures. When a local flap is not feasible, a skin graft may provide favorable surgical outcomes. Therefore, a skin graft can serve as a viable alternative for reconstructing the medial canthal region. The paper presents recommendations concerning the surveillance of patients after the treatment of squamous-cell carcinoma (SCC), basal-cell carcinoma (BCC) and Merkel-cell carcinoma (MCC) based on the current European and American recommendations. This overview discusses the methodology and detailed recommendations concerning the post-treatment surveillance, with special attention to the clinical examination, dermatoscopy, imaging diagnostics and patient education. The recommendations emphasise the significance of early monitoring for recurrences, and early detection of new skin cancers, adapted to individual risk factors in a patient and the characteristics of primary cancer. With the prevalence of malignant melanoma increasing gradually and the progressive westernization of the Asian lifestyle, it is important to analyze and follow up on the characteristics of malignant melanoma at regular intervals. We identified the characteristics of malignant melanoma by analyzing consecutive patients from a single medical center. We also examined the trend of malignant melanoma and prognostic factors in Asian patients. We investigated 200 consecutive patients with malignant melanoma in a single medical center between 2000 and 2022. Each patient's sex and age, tumor stage, site of the primary lesion, histological subtype, Breslow thickness, Clark level, and period of survival were collected from the historical medical records of the patients and analyzed. Survival analyses were performed using the Kaplan–Meier method to investigate the prognostic factors. The ratio of man-to-woman was 1:1.53; the most common site of the primary tumor was the lower extremity (60%), and acral lentiginous melanoma was the most common histological subtype (61%). Malignant melanoma commonly occurs in the lower extremities, primarily in the form of the lentiginous subtype. In situ melanomas are most prevalent regarding Breslow thickness, while Clark Level 4 is the most common type of malignant melanoma. Sex and Breslow thickness were significantly associated with the survival rate. However, others were not significant prognostic indicators for survival in this cohort. This study confirmed that the epidemiology of malignant melanoma in Asian patients was maintained without significant change. We also confirmed several significant prognostic indicators for survival. Primary cutaneous mucinous carcinoma (PCMC) is a rare malignancy of the sweat glands that most commonly affects the periorbital area. It is characterized by slow growth over a prolonged period, and its morphology can be easily confused with a benign tumor, such as an epidermal cyst. Consequently, many patients experience recurrence after undergoing multiple resections. However, there are few reports concerning the surgical management of PCMC. We present two cases of PCMC originating in the periorbital area. The first case involved a 76-year-old man with a mass measuring 3.0× 1.5 cm that had been increasing in size. The second case was a 61-year-old man with two masses, each measuring 1.0× 1.0 cm, that were also growing. Both patients underwent wide excision with a 5-mm safety margin, which was determined based on the widest view of the cross-section of the mass on the magnetic resonance imaging. Subsequently, based on the intraoperative frozen biopsy results, both patients underwent additional excision with a 5-mm safety margin in only one direction. This report shows that, when determining the surgical margin of PCMC in periorbital area, employing imaging modalities and intraoperative frozen biopsies can be helpful for narrowing the surgical margin. Non‐invasive diagnostics like line‐field confocal optical coherence tomography (LC‐OCT) are being implemented in dermato‐oncology. However, unification of terminology in LC‐OCT is lacking. By reviewing the LC‐OCT literature in the field of dermato‐oncology, this study aimed to develop a unified terminological glossary integrated with traditional histopathology. A PRISMA‐guided literature‐search was conducted for English‐language publications on LC‐OCT of actinic keratosis (AK), keratinocyte carcinoma (KC), and malignant melanoma (MM). Study characteristics and terminology were compiled. To harmonize LC‐OCT terminology and integrate with histopathology, synonymous terms for image features of AK, KC, and MM were merged by two authors, organized by skin layer and lesion‐type. A subset of key LC‐OCT image‐markers with histopathological correlates that in combination were typical of AK, squamous cell carcinoma in situ (SCCis), invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and MM in traditional histopathology, were selected from the glossary by an experienced dermatopathologist. Seventeen observational studies of AK (7 studies), KC (13 studies), MM (7 studies) utilizing LC‐OCT were included, with 117 terms describing either AK, KC, or MM. These were merged to produce 45 merged‐terms (61.5% reduction); 5 assigned to the stratum corneum (SC), 23 to the viable epidermis, 2 to dermo‐epidermal junction (DEJ) and 15 to the dermis. For each lesion, mandatory key image‐markers were a well‐defined DEJ and presence of mild/moderate but not severe epidermal dysplasia for AK, severe epidermal dysplasia and well‐defined DEJ for SCCis, interrupted DEJ and/or dermal broad infiltrative strands for invasive SCC, dermal lobules connected and/or unconnected to the epidermis for BCC, as well as single atypical melanocytes and/or nest of atypical melanocytes in the epidermis or dermis for MM. This review compiles evidence on LC‐OCT in dermato‐oncology, providing a harmonized histopathology‐integrated terminology and key image‐markers for each lesion. Nonmelanoma skin cancers remain the most widely diagnosed types of cancers globally. Thus, for optimal patient management, it has become imperative that we focus our efforts on the detection and monitoring of cutaneous field carcinogenesis. The concept of field cancerization (or field carcinogenesis), introduced by Slaughter in 1953 in the context of oral cancer, suggests that invasive cancer may emerge from a molecularly and genetically altered field affecting a substantial area of underlying tissue including the skin. A carcinogenic field alteration, present in precancerous tissue over a relatively large area, is not easily detected by routine visualization. Conventional dermoscopy and microscopy imaging are often limited in assessing the entire carcinogenic landscape. Recent efforts have suggested the use of noninvasive mesoscopic (between microscopic and macroscopic) optical imaging methods that can detect chronic inflammatory features to identify pre‐cancerous and cancerous angiogenic changes in tissue microenvironments. This concise review covers major types of mesoscopic optical imaging modalities capable of assessing pro‐inflammatory cues by quantifying blood haemoglobin parameters and hemodynamics. Importantly, these imaging modalities demonstrate the ability to detect angiogenesis and inflammation associated with actinically damaged skin. Representative experimental preclinical and human clinical studies using these imaging methods provide biological and clinical relevance to cutaneous field carcinogenesis in altered tissue microenvironments in the apparently normal epidermis and dermis. Overall, mesoscopic optical imaging modalities assessing chronic inflammatory hyperemia can enhance the understanding of cutaneous field carcinogenesis, offer a window of intervention and monitoring for actinic keratoses and nonmelanoma skin cancers and maximise currently available treatment options. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a malignant skin cancer that originates from spiny cells and can spread to other parts of the body. It is the second most common skin cancer, generally affecting people over 50, more often men with fair skin due to sun exposure and smoking. Risk factors include excessive sun exposure, immunosuppression, genetic predisposition, and chronic skin inflammation. In summary, SCC is a common skin cancer, with well-defined risk factors, varied clinical manifestations and diverse treatment, with early diagnosis being essential. for a better prognosis. Background: There is a well‐documented risk of secondary cutaneous malignancies following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT), but data on risk in pediatric populations are limited. The objective of this study is to perform a systematic review of reported features and outcomes of skin cancers in pediatric allogeneic HSCT recipients. Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane, and Web of Science were systematically searched (Prospero CRD42022342139). Studies reporting cutaneous cancer outcomes were included if the age at transplant was ≤19 years. Titles, abstracts, and full‐text articles were screened in duplicate. Results: Out of 824 citations that were screened, 12 articles were selected for analysis. The final sample included 67 pediatric HSCT recipients, comprising 65 allogeneic transplant recipients and 2 cases of HSCT with an unknown donor type. The median age at transplant and skin cancer diagnosis were 7.4 and 13 years, respectively. Out of the 67 pediatric HSCT recipients, some patients developed more than one lesion, resulting in 71 lesions. The most common skin cancer type was cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (32 lesions), followed by basal cell carcinoma (25 lesions). The median latency period between HSCT and skin cancer diagnosis ranged from 0 to 29 years. Identified risk factors for skin cancers included younger age at the time of transplant, exposure to total body irradiation, prolonged post‐transplant immunosuppression, graft versus host disease, and sunburn. This study aims to characterize the clinical, health assistance and demographic, of residents from midwest region of Brazil diagnosed with skin cancer. The goal is to understand the interstate trips made to receive the first treatment in the Unified Health System (SUS). An ecological analytical time-series study was conducted, analyzing population care characteristics from 2008 to 2018, using the Hospital Cancer Records and Mortality Information System database. Measures of association between variables were determined using Fisher and Chi-square tests. Of the registered cases, 42.2% were referred to another Federative Unit (UF) to undergo the first treatment. Specifically, 77.9% of cases registered in Goiás began treatment in another UF, while almost all cases in the DF underwent their first treatment in the same UF. Goiás (77.3%) and Mato Grosso (42.5%) were the states that sent the most users to another UF, with São Paulo receiving the highest number of users. Mortality from skin cancer increased by 44% during this period, particularly in Goiás and Mato Grosso do Sul. The results highlight variables associated with deficiencies in oncological care in the region, emphasizing the need for strategies to improve accessibility to treatments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Excessive sun exposure and sunburns are the main preventable causes of skin cancer. The growing popularity of outdoor sports in developed countries has motivated the objective of this work to study the risk of photoexposure and the skin cancer prevention needs of athletes in an extreme race and evaluate an intervention targeted at this population. Methods: An observational study was conducted during the XXIII edition of the 101 km de Ronda race, which consisted of trail running and mountain biking categories. Environmental and personal dosimetry, monitoring of meteorological conditions, evaluation of the athletes' photoprotection and skin examination habits, a dermatological checkup, and a satisfaction questionnaire were performed. Results: The ultra‐endurance race was carried out under adverse conditions (maximum ultraviolet index (UVI) = 9.2, temperatures above 30°C, and relative humidity >35%). The mean effective erythema dose received by race athletes (n = 11) was 2959.2 ± 404.2 J/m2, equivalent to 29.6 standard erythema doses (SED). The CHACES questionnaire (n = 1145) showed a sunburn rate of 58% and poor protective habits: 62.9% of athletes do not usually use sunscreen and 67.2% do not self‐examine their skin. Actinic keratoses (4.7%) and suspicious skin cancer lesions (4.2%) were found in dermatologic screening exams (n = 170). On the satisfaction questionnaire (n = 111), this intervention was rated as excellent (95.5%). Conclusion: This research highlights the extreme risk of photoexposure that athletes are subjected to during ultra‐endurance competitions. Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is prevalent in kidney transplant recipients (KTR), related to the immunosuppressive effects of anti-rejection therapy. Sleep disturbances can alter the immune system and enhance oxidative stress, which may increase the risk of carcinogenesis. This study aimed to analyze the quality of life and sleep in KTR with and without NMSC. Participants answered a set of questionnaires, the WHOQOL-bref, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), the Berlin Questionnaire and self-reported chronotype. The total sample was distributed in the following groups: KTR with NMSC (n = 42), KTR without NMSC (n = 43) and healthy controls (n = 41). The mean scores of the questionnaires were not statistically significant, except for 3 domains of PSQI (sleep quality, sleep latency and daily consequences of poor sleep). The KTR with NMSC and control group presented worse sleep quality. Worse sleep latency and more daytime consequences were found in KTR groups. All groups had a numerical predominance of low-quality sleep (PSQI) and greater sleepiness (EES). Higher risk of obstructive sleep apnea was not observed and the evening-type chronotype was most frequent. In the WHOQOL, compromised physical domain was observed in KTR. Significant results were reached in few aspects of quality of life and sleep comparing KTR and controls. All groups presented excessive daytime sleepiness and low-sleep quality. OBJECTIVE: To describe the response to vismodegib in combination with cryotherapy as adjuvant in the treatment of locally advanced basal cell carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive observational study was carried out, in which the clinical response of patients with locally advanced basal cell carcinoma treated with combination therapy (vismodegib with cryotherapy) was evaluated. Sex, age, time of evolution of the malignant lesion, histological subtype, lesion location and development of adverse events are described. RESULTS: Of 12 patients, 6 were women. Two of the 19 tumors presented a morpheaform pattern, the remaining presented a nodular and mixed pattern. Seven patients had complete clinical improvement and three had partial clinical improvement. The mean duration of treatment was 3.93 months and the mean number of cryotherapy sessions was 5.61. Four patients presented side effects. CONCLUSIONS: This is one of the first approaches showing favorable and safe results with the combined treatment of vismodegib and cryotherapy in a Latin American population. It is necessary to evaluate the probable response factors to small molecule therapy, the cost-effectiveness and the risk-benefit of this therapeutic option in a larger sample size. The authors conducted a review of peer-reviewed journal publications on this topic and found that while many studies reported technical properties of data and algorithm development, they often lacked critical clinical information. Only 10.4% of the studies complied with the CLEAR Derm guidelines, which raises concerns about the clinical relevance of these AI models. Surgical resection is the gold standard treatment for basal cell carcinomas, although there is literature supporting cryotherapy for low-risk cases. Our aim was to compare the histopathological aspects of recurrent postcryotherapy head and neck cutaneous BCC with de novo tumors, using a case-control study. 51 Recurrent postcryotherapy cases were selected between January 2017 and December 2021 and compared to 132 controls filtered from a consecutive series of de novo head and neck cutaneous BCC operated between January and December 2021. Aggressive variants, multifocality, invasion beyond adipose tissue and higher Clark levels were associated with recurrent cases on multivariate analysis. While the gold standard treatment for cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCCs) is surgical removal, there is a risk of infection, cosmetic and functional deficits. Intralesional 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU) has been shown to be a potential non‐surgical treatment modality for cSCCs in the literature. The aim was to investigate the safety and feasibility of using intralesional 5‐FU to treat cSCCs. A literature review was conducted and a retrospective case series analysed patients who commenced intralesional 5‐FU treatment for at least one cSCC between 1 January 2018 and 1 January 2019 at a private clinic in Orange, Australia. Inclusion criteria include: at least one cSCC was treated; only intralesional 5‐FU was used; and treatment was ceased due to complete or inadequate remission, or adverse effects. There were 15 patients (7 female, 8 male, 60–99 years) and 20 out 21 cSCC lesions (82.6%) cleared while one lesion (4.3%) recurred. Six lesions (26.1%) ulcerated, four lesions became infected (17.4%) and one patient had an allergic reaction. The average number of treatments required for clearance was four (range 1–35), and the average 5‐FU dose used was 75 mg (range 50–150 mg). Across 25 studies, 656 out of 708 lesions cleared (92.66%). Adverse effects were self‐limiting and mostly well‐tolerated. Intralesional 5‐FU is an affordable and non‐invasive non‐surgical treatment modality that appears feasible to use for cSCCs and has a relatively low treatment‐associated morbidity. Previous studies reported inconsistent results regarding the association between keratinocyte carcinoma (KC) and exogenous hormone therapy. This study aimed to investigate the association between the use of exogenous sex hormones and the risk of KC among women. The databases of PubMed, Ovid Medline, Cochrane, and Web of Science were searched until May 2023. A total of 5293 patients with KC and 106,424 controls were included for analysis. The meta-analysis indicated that oral contraceptives (OC) and hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) use were associated with an increased risk of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) (OR/RR = 1.25, 95% CI 1.10 to 1.43, I2 = 41.6%, p = 0.080). Subgroup analysis showed that OC use increased the risk of SCC (OR/RR = 1.37, 95% CI 1.15 to 1.63), whereas no significant association was shown between HRT use and risk of SCC (OR/RR = 1.13, 95% CI 0.93 to 1.37). Additionally, OC and HRT use were linked to an increased risk of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) (OR/RR = 1.16, 95% CI 1.09 to 1.25, I2 = 30.1%, p = 0.188). Further subgroup analysis suggested both OC and HRT use were associated with an increased risk of BCC (OC: OR/RR = 1.13, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.25; HRT: OR/RR = 1.19, 95% CI 1.09 to 1.30). Japanese patients with very high‐risk cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCCs), based on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines, have been reported to display a higher cumulative incidence of relapse and disease‐specific death (DSD) than those with high‐risk cSCC. Therefore, prognosis prediction is crucial for Japanese patients with very high‐risk cSCCs. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the prognostic prediction ability of our novel Japanese Risk Factor Scoring Systems (JARF scoring) in a Japanese cohort of cSSC patients. Data of 424 Japanese patients with resectable very high‐risk cSCCs were analysed. We compared the prognostic ability of the following three staging systems: Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) tumour staging, number of NCCN very high‐risk factors, and JARF scoring, including recurrent tumour, high‐risk histological features, deep tumour invasion and lymphatic or vascular involvement as risk factors. The prognostic ability of these staging systems was evaluated according to the cumulative incidence of local recurrence (LR), regional lymph node metastasis (RLNM), DSD, and overall survival (OS). When BWH staging was used, high T stage led to significantly poor outcomes only in the cumulative incidence of RLNM (p = 0.01). The presence of very high‐risk NCCN factors led to significantly poor outcomes in terms of RLNM (p = 0.03) and OS (p = 0.02). Meanwhile, a high number of risk factors in the JARF scoring system clearly led to poor outcomes in terms of LR (p = 0.01), RLNM (p < 0.01), DSD (p = 0.03), and OS (p < 0.01). The article discusses a case of epidermolytic epidermal nevus on the genitalia caused by a mosaic KRT10 mutation in a 17-year-old male. The patient presented with verrucous skin lesions over the foreskin, shaft, scrotum, and perineum, with histopathologic features consistent with epidermolytic hyperkeratosis. Glomus tumors are well‐known but relatively rare vascular neoplasms, with their malignant counterparts still being rarer. There are very few reports of cutaneous malignant glomus tumors, and the current limited evidence suggests that they follow a more indolent course than deep‐seated malignant glomus tumors. Herein, we are reporting a case of cutaneous malignant glomus tumor. A 94‐year‐old male presented with a right‐sided ulcerated scalp lesion, which, on biopsy, showed a diffusely infiltrative epithelioid malignancy with considerable pleomorphism and a notable perivascular growth pattern. The tumor cells were positive for smooth muscle actin (SMA) and h‐caldesmon, and negative for cytokeratin MNF116, CK5, p40, S100, SOX10, HMB45, Melan‐A, ERG, CD31, CD45, CD3, CD20, ALK, desmin, CD68, CD34, and HHV8. A diagnosis of cutaneous malignant glomus tumor was made, and the patient underwent a wider excision. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the incidence of recurrence of non-melanoma skin cancer in Presidente Prudente; determine the epidemiological profile of these individuals and verify the agreement of the results with national data. The medical records of patients of any age, gender, or color, with a histopathological diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma, treated surgically, with surgical margins free of neoplastic involvement, at the Hospital Regional de Presidente Prudente, from 2008 to 2018, were reviewed. looking for the number of recurrences in the first 5 years after surgical treatment. Of the total of 1,001 patients, 12.4% had recurrences, 55.7% were male and 92.9% were white. Chronic sun exposure was an important risk factor (97.2%), the face was the region with the greatest involvement in relation to primary lesions (87.2%) and the most common site of recurrence (56%). Recurrences were observed approximately 14 months after surgery in cases of basal cell carcinoma and 6.8 months in cases of squamous cell carcinoma. The recurrence incidence rate found (12.4%) is higher than the literature. Cutaneous syncytial myoepithelioma (CSM) is a rare type of cutaneous neoplasm that typically presents as a solitary and well-circumscribed nodule on the skin. It predominantly occurs on the upper and lower extremities of adult patients. Immunohistochemically, CSM is characterized by the co-expression of smooth muscle and epithelial markers. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) targeting the EWSR1 gene rearrangement is an important diagnostic tool for CSM. Facial skin cancer (FSC) is prone to incomplete excision due to the sophisticated anatomy and the aesthetic importance of the face. In this study, we sought to investigate to what extent sex-specific differences and other operation-, patient-, and cancer-specific factors influence the re-resection rate in FSC surgery, in order to provide personalized treatment strategies to patients. In this retrospective study, patients (>18 years) undergoing surgical excision of an FSC were enrolled. Each patient's demographic data, cancer location, the surgical team, primary and secondary surgeries were analyzed. Overall, 469 patients (819 surgeries) were included. The mean age was 69 ± 15 years. No significant association between sex-specific factors (surgeon's sex (OR: 1.09, 95% CI: 0.76–1.56) or patient's sex (OR: 0.85, 95% CI: 0.62–1.17), surgeon–patient sex concordance and discordance) and the likelihood of secondary surgery were found. However, healing by secondary intention (OR: 4.28; 95% CI: 1.94–9.45) and cancer location showed an increased re-resection rate. In conclusion, FSC surgery is a safe method unaffected by sex-specific factors, which had no impact on the re-resection rate. However, in further analysis, the likelihood of a re-resection was influenced by other factors such as healing by secondary intention and cancer location. Background and Objectives: This study aimed to develop a natural nanoemulsion with antibacterial and anticancer properties. Materials and Methods: The chemical composition of the Origanum majorana essential oil was investigated using GC-MS analysis. Besides, the successful loading of the essential oil in the nanoemulsion was confirmed using ATR-FTIR analysis. Moreover, nanoemulsion's anticancer, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities were investigated. Results: Terpinen-4-o1 (46.90%) was identified as the major compound in the essential oil. The nanoemulsion with a 149 ± 5 nm droplet size and zeta potential of -11 ± 1 mV was prepared. The cytotoxic effect of the nanoemulsion against A-375 human melanoma cells (IC = 139 µg/mL) showed significantly more potency than A-549 human lung cancer cells (IC = 318 µg/mL). Interestingly, growth of Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) and E. coli (Gram-negative) bacteria after treatment with 4800 µg/mL of nanoemulsion were obtained at 12 ± 2 and 6 ± 1%, respectively. However, the IC50 value of nanoemulsion against E. coli (580 µg/mL) was not significantly different (P > 0.05) from S. aureus (611 µg/mL). Conclusion: A straightforward preparation method, high stability, and multi-biological effects are the main advantages of the prepared nanoemulsion. Purpose: The objective of this study is to determine primary survival endpoints in women with recurrent and metastatic endometrial carcinoma (RMEC) treated with progestins. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted at The Ottawa Hospital using electronic medical records. Inclusion criteria were a diagnosis of RMEC between 2000 and 2019, endometrioid histology, and ≥one line of progestin treatment. Progression‐free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were estimated using the Kaplan–Meier method. Results: Of 2342 cases reviewed, 74 met inclusion criteria. Sixty‐six (88.0%) patients received megestrol acetate and 9 (12.0%) received a progestin alternative. The distribution of tumors by grade was: 1: 25 (33.3%), 2: 30 (40.0%), and 3: 20 (26.7%). The PFS and OS for the entire study sample was 14.3 months (95% CI 6.2–17.9) and 23.3 months (14.8–36.8), respectively. The PFS for patients with Grade 1–2 RMEC was 15.7 months (8.0, 19.5), compared to 5.0 months (3.0, 23.0) with Grade 3 disease. The OS for patients with Grade 1–2 versus Grade 3, was 25.9 months (15.3, 40.3) versus 12.5 months (5.7, 35.9), respectively. Thirty‐four (45.9%) and 40 (54.1%) patients were treated with 0 and ≥1 line of chemotherapy. The PFS for chemotherapy‐naïve patients was 17.9 months (14.3, 27.0), versus 6.2 months (3.9, 14.8) following ≥1 line of treatment. The OS was 29.1 months (17.9, 61.1) for chemotherapy‐naïve patients versus 23.0 months (10.5, 37.6) for patients previously exposed. Conclusions: This real‐world data on RMEC suggests there is a role for progestins in select subgroups of women. Due to the great array of clinical conditions, their worldwide increasing incidence and the steady ageing of the population, non-invasive treatments modalities that show a good clinical response, a proper benefit–risk ratio and cosmetic results are becoming increasingly important in the clinical setting. Imiquimod is a topically applied immunomodulator which is often used in the management of several premalignant and malignant cutaneous disorders. Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have shown modest antitumor activity in unselected advanced sarcomas. Histology driven approach to patient selection is the current standard for off-label anti-programmed cell death 1 (PD1) immunotherapy use. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with advanced sarcoma who were treated with off label anti-PD1 immunotherapy at our center. Results: A total of 84 patients with 25 histological subtypes were included. Nineteen patients (23%) had a cutaneous primary tumor site. Eighteen patients (21%) were classified as having clinical benefit, including 1 patient with complete response, 14 with partial response, and 3 with stable disease lasting over 6 months with previously progressive disease. Cutaneous primary site location was associated with higher clinical benefit rate (58% vs. 11%, p < 0.001), longer median PFS (8.6 vs. 2.5 months, p = 0.003) and OS (19.0 vs. 9.2 months, p = 0.011), compared to non-cutaneous primary. Patients with histological subtypes that pembrolizumab is indicated per current National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines had modestly higher rate of clinical benefit versus other histologies, however, the difference was statistically insignificant (29% vs. 15%, p = 0.182) and no statistically significant difference in PFS or OS was observed between these groups. Immune-related adverse events were more frequently seen among patients with clinical benefit (72% vs. 35%, p = 0.007). Conclusions: Anti-PD1-based immunotherapy is highly efficacious in advanced sarcomas of cutaneous primary site. Cutaneous primary site location is a stronger predictor of ICI response than histologic subtype and should be accounted for in treatment guidelines and clinical trial design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The most prevalent modifiable risk factor for skin cancer is cumulative lifetime exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, supporting the development of interventions promoting the early adoption of sun‐protection behaviors. This systematic review summarizes behavioral interventions designed to promote sun‐protection behaviors and reduce harmful UV exposure among U.S. adolescents. Ten studies describing 15 intervention arms were ultimately included in this review and comprised seven cross‐sectional studies, a cohort study, a quasi‐experimental study, and a randomized controlled trial. Most interventions included in this review were effective in increasing awareness of skin cancer and knowledge of the risk factors for skin cancer, but knowledge did not correlate with self‐reported frequency of sun‐protection behaviors in this population. OBJECTIVE: To communicate our results with the relieve of rare skin tumors with Mohs micrographic surgery in two centers in Montevideo, Uruguay, with nine years of experience in this technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observational, descriptive, retrospective study of patients with rare skin tumors treated with Mohs micrographic surgery was carried out from November 2013 to February 2022. RESULTS: In the nine-year period, a total of 755 Mohs micrographic surgeries were performed in the two centers, of which 13 corresponded to rare tumors, 6 of them were men and 7 were women. The ages of presentation were in a wide range, between 22 and 83 years old. We included 2 sebaceous carcinomas, 6 dermatofibrosarcomas protuberans, 2 leiomiosarcomas and 3 atypical fibroxanthomas, which were treated with Mohs micrographic surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Mohs micrographic surgery could be an excellent option as surgical treatment of rare skin tumors, leading to a reduction in the risk of local recurrence in sebaceous carcinomas, dermatofibrosarcomas protuberans, leiomyosarcomas and atypical fibroxanthomas. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether radiologically defined sarcopenia, or a low skeletal muscle index (SMI), could be used as a practical biomarker for frailty and postoperative complications (POC) in patients with head and neck skin cancer (HNSC). This was a retrospective study on prospectively collected data. The L3 SMI (cm2/m2) was calculated with use of baseline CT or MRI neck scans and low SMIs were defined using sex-specific cut-off values. A geriatric assessment with a broad range of validated tools was performed at baseline. POC was graded with the Clavien–Dindo Classification (with a grade of > II as the cut-off). Univariate and multivariable regression analyses were performed with low SMIs and POC as the endpoints. The patients' (n = 57) mean age was 77.0 ± 9 years, 68.4% were male, and 50.9% had stage III–IV cancer. Frailty was determined according to Geriatric 8 (G8) score (OR 7.68, 95% CI 1.19–49.66, p = 0.032) and the risk of malnutrition was determined according to the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (OR 9.55, 95% CI 1.19–76.94, p = 0.034), and these were independently related to low SMIs. Frailty based on G8 score (OR 5.42, 95% CI 1.25–23.49, p = 0.024) was the only variable related to POC. However, POC was more prevalent in patients with low SMIs (∆ 19%, OR 1.8, 95% CI 0.5–6.0, p = 0.356).To conclude, a low SMI is a practical biomarker for frailty and malnutrition in HNSC. Future research should be focused on interventions based on low SMI scores and assess the effect of the intervention on SMI, frailty, malnutrition, and POC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
