Hemispheric lateralization and cooperation are essential for efficient brain function, and aberrations in both have been found in psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. This study investigated alterations in hemispheric lateralization and cooperation among patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and associations with neurotransmitter and cell-type density distributions to identify potential molecular and cellular pathomechanisms. Sixty-seven BD patients and 127 healthy controls (HCs) were examined by resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI). Whole-brain maps of the autonomy index (AI) and connectivity between functionally homotopic voxels (CFH) were constructed to reveal BD-specific changes in brain functional lateralization and interhemispheric cooperation, respectively. Spatial associations of regional AI and CFH abnormalities with neurotransmitter and cell-type density distributions were examined by correlation analyses. Bipolar disorder patients exhibited higher AI values in left superior parietal gyrus, cerebellar right Crus I, and cerebellar right Crus II, and these regional abnormalities were associated with the relative densities (proportions) of oligodendrocyte precursor cells and microglia. Patients also exhibited lower CFH values in right inferior parietal gyrus, bilateral middle occipital gyrus, left postcentral gyrus, and bilateral cerebellar crus II, and these regional abnormalities were associated with the densities of serotonin 1A and dopamine D2 receptors, oligodendrocyte precursor cells, astrocytes, and neurons. The aim of this study was to investigate alterations in the resting-state brain functional network characteristics of lifelong premature ejaculation (PE) patients using surface-based degree centrality (DC), and to analyze the correlation between these alterations and clinical symptoms in PE patients. The study included individuals with lifelong PE (patient group, n = 36) and a control group matched by age and education level (control group, n = 22). Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans were performed on all participants. Surface-based degree centrality analysis was conducted and the differences between the two groups were compared using t-tests. Further, the DC values of brain regions showing significant differences were correlated with clinical symptoms. Compared to the control group, the patient group exhibited significantly reduced degree centrality (DC) values in the left precuneus and significantly increased DC values in the right supplementary motor area (SMA). Furthermore, intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT) and Chinese Index of Premature Ejaculation (CIPE) values were positively correlated with left precuneus DC values and negatively correlated with right SMA DC values. Patients with primary lifelong ejaculation demonstrate abnormalities in key brain network nodes and their connections with relevant brain regions, which are strongly associate with clinical symptoms. Background: The neuropathophysiological mechanisms of brain damage underlying hypothyroidism remain unclear. Fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) has been established as a reliable indicator for investigation of abnormal spontaneous brain activity that occurs at specific frequencies in different types of mental disorder. However, the changes of fALFF in specific frequency bands in hypothyroidism have not yet been investigated. Methods: Fifty-three hypothyroid patients and 39 healthy controls (HCs) underwent thyroid-related hormone levels tests, neuropsychological assessment, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. The fALFF in the standard band (0.01-0.1 Hz), slow-4 (0.027-0.073 Hz), and slow-5 bands (0.01-0.027 Hz) were analyzed. An analysis of Pearson correlation was conducted between fALFF, thyroid-related hormone levels, and neuropsychological scores in hypothyroid patients. Results: Compared to HCs, within the routine band, hypothyroidism group showed significantly decreased fALFF in left lingual gyrus, middle temporal gyrus (MTG), precentral gyrus, calcarine cortex, and right inferior occipital gyrus; within the slow-5 band, the hypothyroidism group exhibited decreased fALFF in left lingual gyrus, MTG, superior temporal gyrus, postcentral gyrus, and paracentral lobule, and increased fALFF in supplementary motor area (SMA) and right middle frontal gyrus; additionally, fALFF in the left lingual gyrus within the routine and slow-5 bands were negatively correlated with the level of thyroid stimulating hormone. Conclusions: In this study, the slow-5 frequency band exhibits better sensitivity than the standard band in detecting fALFF values. A decrease of fALFF values in the lingual gyrus and MTG was observed in both the standard and slow-5 bands and might present potential neuroimaging biomarkers for hypothyroidism. Aims: Parkinson's disease (PD) patients experience improvement in motor symptoms after deep brain stimulation (DBS) and before initiating stimulation. This is called the microlesion effect. However, the mechanism remains unclear. The study aims to comprehensively explore the changes in functional connectivity (FC) patterns in movement‐related brain regions in PD patients during the microlesion phase through seed‐based FC analysis. Methods: The study collected the resting functional magnetic resonance imaging data of 49 PD patients before and after DBS surgery (off stimulation). The cortical and subcortical areas related to motor function were selected for seed‐based FC analysis. Meanwhile, their relationship with the motor scale was investigated. Results: The motor‐related brain regions were selected as the seed point, and we observed various FC declines within the motor network brain regions. These declines were primarily in the left middle temporal gyrus, bilateral middle frontal gyrus, right supplementary motor area, left precentral gyrus, left postcentral gyrus, left inferior frontal gyrus, and right superior frontal gyrus after DBS. Conclusion: The movement‐related network was extensively reorganized during the microlesion period. The study provided new information on enhancing motor function from the network level post‐DBS. • Alterations in regional spontaneous activity between depressive patients with and without non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) were studied by resting-state fMRI. • The NSSI group had characteristic alterations in brain activity and these alterations correlated with clinical features. • This provides help to differentiate subtypes of depression and to predict suicide risk. We conducted this resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) study to characterize changes in regional homogeneity (ReHo) or fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) in young adult patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), with or without non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). We recruited 54 MDD patients with NSSI (MDD/NSSI), 68 MDD patients without NSSI, which is referred to as simple MDD (sMDD), and 66 matched healthy controls (HCs). A combination of fALFF and ReHo analyses was conducted. The effects of NSSI on the brain and their relationship to clinical variables were examined in this study. MDD/NSSI patients have decreased fALFF in the right superior frontal gyrus (SFG) and the right inferior parietal lobe (IPL), decreased ReHo in the right SFG and the right middle temporal gyrus (MTG) and the left middle occipital gyrus (MOG). fALFF and ReHo values of the right SFG are positively correlated. The ReHo values of the right SFG and the number of recent self-injuries are positively correlated; the fALFF values of the right SFG are negatively correlated with NSSI severity. There is a difference in brain activity between MDD/NSSI and sMDD, which may serve as an important physiological marker to determine the risk of self-injury and suicide. Abnormal brain activity in patients with NSSI may provide new perspectives and significant implications on the severity of MDD patients and the prevention of self-injury and suicide. Patients with bipolar disorder (BD) are at high risk of suicidal ideation (SI), and BD patients with suicidal ideation (BDSI) have shown marked abnormalities in spontaneous brain function. Cognitive impairment, on the other hand, is considered to be one of the core symptoms of BD. However, few studies have addressed the association between cognitive performance and abnormal spontaneous brain function in BDSI. In the current study, the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) was used to assess cognitive performance in BDSI (n = 20), BD subjects without suicidal ideation (BDNSI) (n = 24) and healthy controls (HC) (n = 30). Their cognitive performance was then correlated with amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF) values obtained by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). We found that ALFF was significantly higher in the left precuneus and right posterior cingulate cortex in the BDSI group and significantly lower in the right precuneus in the BDNSI group than in the HC group. In addition, in the BDSI group, visual learning performance was positively correlated with ALFF values in the left precuneus. Introduction: Coronavirus-2019 (COVID-19) spreads rapidly worldwide and causes severe acute respiratory syndrome. The current study aims to evaluate the relationship between the whole-brain functional connections in a resting state and cognitive impairments in patients with COVID-19 compared to the healthy control group. Methods: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) data were obtained from 29 patients of the acute stage of COVID-19 on the third day of admission and 20 healthy controls. Cross-correlation of the mean resting-state signals was determined in the voxels of 23 independent components (IC) of brain neural circuits. To assess cognitive function and neuropsychological status, MoCA was performed on all participants. The relationship between rs-fMRI information, neuropsychological status, and paraclinical data was analyzed. Results: The COVID-19 group got a lower mean MoCA score and showed a significant reduction in the functional connectivity of the IC14 (P<0.001) and IC38 (P<0.001) regions compared to the controls. The increase in functional connectivity was observed in the COVID-19 group compared to the controls at baseline in the default mode network (DMN) IC00 (P<0.001) and dorsal attention network (DAN) IC08 (P<0.001) regions. Furthermore, the alternation of functional connectivity in the mentioned ICs was significantly correlated with the mean MoCA scores and inflammatory parameters, i.e. erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and C-reactive protein (CRP). Conclusion: Functional connectivity abnormalities in four brain neural circuits are associated with cognitive impairment and increased inflammatory markers in patients with COVID-19. • Cognitive reserve (CR) modulates resting-state networks in healthy older adults. • High CR is associated to increased Frontal-Parietal Control Network connectivity and reduced Dorsal Attention Network connectivity. • High CR connectivity pattern are associated to better cognitive performance. Cognitive Reserve (CR) is considered a protective factor during the aging process. However, although CR is a multifactorial construct, it has been operationalized in a unitary way (years of formal education or IQ). In the present study, a validated measure to categorize CR holistically (Cognitive Reserve Index Questionnaire) was used to evaluate the resting-state functional connectivity in 77 cognitively unimpaired participants aged 50 years and over with high and low CR, and matched brain global atrophy levels. The connectivity of networks linked to attentional (Dorsal Attention Network -DAN-) and executive (Frontal-Parietal Control Network -FPCN-) processes were evaluated by the combination of Independent Component Analysis and seed-based approaches, since these networks have been proposed as candidates to underlie the protective effect of CR in the aging context. Participants with high CR showed an increase of the connectivity in the FPCN and a decrease in the DAN with respect to the low CR group, correlating with neuropsychological scores and supporting that high CR is related to a better neurocognitive preservation during aging. Objective: To investigate the resting-stage functional connectivity between olfactory brain region and whole brain in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), analyze the correlation between the connectivity and autistic behavior, and explore the potential relationship between olfactory perception and advanced neural function. Methods: Thirty-four boys with autism spectrum disorder and 29 gender-, age-, and handedness-matched normal control boys were scanned by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system for image acquisition. The diagnosis were made according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5). Based on resting-stage functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging ( rs-fcMRI) . The olfactory brain region BA34 (BA) was used as the region of interest to calculate the level of functional connectivity with the whole brain. The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) were used to assess the behavior of children with autism, the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) was used to assess children's intelligence, and the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) was used to assess children's social skills. Results: The positive functional connectivity between BA34 and right hippocampus, right insula in children with autism was higher than that in normal control children (Ps < 0. 05). And the value of functional connectivity was negatively correlated with communication domain of ADOS, social cognition, social communication and total scale of SRS (r = - 0. 53, - 0. 45, - 0. 38, - 0. 39, Ps < 0. 05). Background: Although several brain networks play important roles in cervical dystonia (CD) patients, regional homogeneity (ReHo) changes in CD patients have not been clarified. We investigated to explore ReHo in CD patients at rest and analyzed its correlations with symptom severity as measured by Tsui scale.Methods: A total of 19 CD patients and 21 gender-, age-, and education-matched healthy controls underwent fMRI scans at rest state. Data were analyzed by ReHo method.Results: Patients showed increased ReHo in the right cerebellum crus I and decreased ReHo in the right superior medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC). Moreover, the right precentral gyrus, right insula, and bilateral middle cingulate gyrus also showed increased ReHo values. A significantly positive correlation was observed between ReHo value in the right cerebellum crus I and symptom severity (p < 0.05).Conclusions: Our investigation suggested abnormal ReHo existed in brain regions of the "pain matrix" and salience network (the right insula and bilateral middle cingulate gyrus), the motor network (the right precentral gyrus), the cerebellum and MPFC and further highlighted the significance of these networks in the pathology of CD. Patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) have been indicated to exhibit abnormal resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) of the cingulate cortex. However, it has remained elusive whether cingulate subregions show different connectivity patterns in TLE. The present study aimed to investigate the differences in rsFC of each cingulate subregion between patients with right-sided TLE (rTLE) and healthy controls (HCs), as well as their association with executive control performance in rTLE. A total of 27 patients with rTLE and 20 age-, sex- and education-matched healthy controls were recruited and all participants underwent resting-state functional MRI and an attention network test for the assessment executive control function. In each hemisphere, the cingulate gyrus (CG) was divided into CG-1 (dorsal area 23; A23d), CG-2 (rostroventral area 24; A24rv), CG-3 (pregenual area 32; A32p), CG-4 (ventral area 23; A23v), CG-5 (caudodorsal area 24; A24cd), CG-6 (caudal area 24; A23c) and CG-7 (subgenual area 32; A32sg). Pearson's correlation analysis was performed to assess the correlation between the altered FCs of the cingulate subregions and clinical variables. In patients with rTLE, the majority of the cingulate subregions exhibited decreased rsFC; this was primarily restricted to the right CG-2, the bilateral CG-6 and the bilateral CG-7. Increased rsFC was only detected in rTLE restricted to the left CG-1. Impairments in executive control efficiency were identified in patients with rTLE in comparison with the HCs. Significant alterations in rsFC between the cingulate subregion and the brain regions were mostly decreased (and some slightly increased), suggesting that FC may potentially have a left-side advantage in patients with rTLE. FC variations of the cingulate subregions were indicated to be specific to rTLE. In addition, increased connectivity in the left CG-1 and left superior frontal gyrus were negatively correlated with executive control performance, suggesting a compensatory mechanism on executive control deficits in pathological conditions. This information on differentially altered FC patterns of the cingulate subregions may provide a deeper understanding of the complex neurological mechanisms and executive control dysfunctions underlying rTLE. Objective: Poststroke depression (PSD) is an important complication that affects stroke rehabilitation. Abnormal cortical-subcortical connectivity may be associated with the development of PSD. However, few studies have focused on the emotional network of PSD in the temporal lobe lesions. The aim of is study was to investigate amygdala-cortical functional connectivity (FC) in the temporal lobe in individuals with and without PSD. Design: Twenty-three patients with PSD and 21 stroke patients without depression were recruited to undergo functional magnetic imaging scanning. Results: In stroke patients with depression, the left amygdala had increased FC with the bilateral precuneus and right orbital frontal lobe but decreased FC with the right putamen. The right amygdala had increased FC with the right temporal pole, right rectus gyrus, and left orbital frontal lobe but decreased FC with the right primary sensory area (S1). Correlative analyses revealed that the amygdala's FCs with the right orbital frontal lobe, right insular cortex, and right cingulate cortex were correlated with the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale score. Conclusion: The current study identified mood affected through the fronto-limbic-striatal circuit in PSD. Hyperconnectivity between the amygdala, default mode network, and salience network might be related to depressive symptoms, which may provide novel insight into the underlying neuropathologic mechanisms of PSD in temporal lobe lesions. Purpose: To explore the amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and functional connectivity (FC) disorders in non-neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (non-NPSLE) patients by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and to study whether there are some clinical biomarkers that can be used to monitor the brain dysfunction.Methods: Based on the rs-fMRI data of 36 non-NPSLE patients and 30 normal controls, we first obtained the regions with abnormal ALFF signals in non-NPSLE patients. Then, by taking these areas as seed regions of interest (ROIs), we calculated the FC between ROIs and the whole brain to assess the network-level alterations. Finally, we correlated the altered values of ALFF and FC in non-NPSLE patients to some clinical data.Results: Compared with the controls, non-NPSLE patients showed decreased ALFF in bilateral precuneus and increased ALFF in right cuneus and right calcarine fissure surrounding cortex (CAL). At network level, non-NPSLE patients exhibited higher FC between left precuneus and left middle occipital gyrus (MOG)/left superior occipital gyrus (SOG)/right middle frontal gyrus (MFG)/right dorsolateral superior frontal gyrus (SFGdor), and higher FC between right cuneus and bilateral precuneus/left posterior cingulate gyrus (PCG). The abnormal ALFF in right CAL and abnormal FC in right cuneus-left precuneus, right cuneus-right precuneus, and right cuneus-left PCG were correlated with the patients' certain clinical data (p < 0.05).Conclusion: Rs-fMRI is a promising tool for detecting the brain function disorders in non-NPSLE patients and to help understand the neurophysiological mechanisms. Objective: Structural and functional abnormalities have been reported in the brain of patients with adolescent-onset schizophrenia (AOS). The brain regional functional synchronization in patients with AOS remains unclear.Methods: We analyzed resting-state functional magnetic resonance scans in 48 drug-naive patients with AOS and 31 healthy controls by using regional homogeneity (ReHo), a measurement that reflects brain local functional connectivity or synchronization and indicates regional integration of information processing. Then, receiver operating characteristic curves and support vector machines were used to evaluate the effect of abnormal regional homogeneity in differentiating patients from controls.Results: Patients with AOS showed significantly increased ReHo values in the bilateral superior medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) and significantly decreased ReHo values in the left superior temporal gyrus (STG), right precentral lobule, right inferior parietal lobule (IPL), and left paracentral lobule when compared with controls. A combination of the ReHo values in bilateral superior MPFC, left STG, and right IPL was able to discriminate patients from controls with the sensitivity of 88.24%, specificity of 91.89%, and accuracy of 90.14%.Conclusion: The brain regional functional synchronization abnormalities exist in drug-naive patients with AOS. Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is one of the most distressing concerns for breast cancer survivors, but the neural mechanism underlying FCR remains unclear. We conducted a cross-sectional study and recruited 62 breast cancer survivors varying in FCR (31 high-FCR individuals and 31 low-FCR individuals) and compared neuroimaging findings. Data from 3 low-FCR subjects were excluded because they did not complete all experiments. All the participants underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). Regional homogeneity (ReHo) and voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) were assessed. Breast cancer survivors with high and low FCR significantly differed in the ReHo of the left caudate nucleus and precuneus as well as in the VMHC of the posterior cerebellar lobe, superior frontal gyrus, orbital frontal gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus, occipital gyrus, inferior parietal lobule and frontal middle gyrus. FCR was negatively correlated with the mean ReHo of the left caudate nucleus (r = −0.501, p < 0.001) and positively correlated with the mean ReHo of the right precuneus (r = 0.505, p < 0.001). In addition, FCR was positively correlated with the mean VMHC of the bilateral superior occipital gyrus (r = 0.438, p < 0.001). Background Resting wakefulness is not a unitary state, with evidence accumulating that spontaneous reorganization of brain activity can be assayed through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The dynamics of correlated fMRI signals among functionally-related brain regions, termed dynamic functional connectivity (dFC), may represent nonstationarity arising from underlying neural processes. However, given the dimensionality and noise inherent in such recordings, seeming fluctuations in dFC could be due to sampling variability or artifacts. New method Here, we highlight key methodological considerations when evaluating dFC in resting-state fMRI data. Comparison with existing method In particular, we demonstrate how dimensionality reduction of fMRI data, a common practice often involving principal component analysis, may give rise to spurious dFC phenomenology due to its effect of decorrelating the underlying time-series. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) has been actively used in the last decade to investigate brain functional connectivity alterations in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) to understand the neuropathophysiology of T2DM in cognitive degeneration. Given the emergence of new analysis techniques, this scoping review aims to map the rs-fMRI analysis techniques that have been applied in the literature and reports the latest rs-fMRI findings that have not been covered in previous reviews. Graph theory, the contemporary rs-fMRI analysis, has been used to demonstrate altered brain topological organisations in people with T2DM, which included altered degree centrality, functional connectivity strength, the small-world architecture and network-based statistics.
