Environmental mobility of anthropogenic heavy metal releases is governed by site-specific hydrobiogeochemical factors. Uranium (U) releases from 1965 to 1988 resulted in contamination of the Tims Branch wetland at the United States Department of Energy Savannah River Site (SRS) near Aiken, South Carolina. Today, 80% of the 43,000 kg released remain sequestered in soils of two former ponds, Beaver Pond and Steed Pond. The objective of this study was to understand U partitioning from contaminated wetland sediments to aqueous and particulate iron-floc phases. The approach was to correlate U, iron (Fe), and organic matter (OM) in soil cores at key depositional areas; determine U and Fe concentrations in aqueous- and solid-phases in the stream; and compare these stream water data following two storm events. Uranium was released into an outfall canal leading away from the SRS M-Area and first deposited in a topographically low area where a beaver pond is frequently in place. Uranium soil concentrations in Beaver Pond exceed 14,000 µg/g and a second deposition area 1 km downgradient in a former farm pond (Steed Pond) has U soil concentrations near 300 µg/g. Uranium releases to the stream are minimal at Beaver Pond, but U incorporation into Fe-OM colloids, or flocs, at Steed Pond results in appreciable fluxes of U from the wetland. This work yields four key conclusions. At the kilometer and meter scales, geochemistry cannot be the sole predictor of U mobility, as the anthropogenic U deposition is geologically young relative to Fe and OM. Storm intensity and duration do not appear to be directly proportional to U releases from the wetland, as flooding decreases U inclusion in mobile flocs. The mass of suspended solids present in a stream reach often governs how much U moves. The solid-bound U inventory at Beaver Pond does not enter the mobile aqueous phase as easily as Steed Pond U, resulting in U sequestration amid wetland metal cycling in Tims Branch. This work expands upon studies conducted in the 1990′s and early 2000′s, improving our understanding of the geochemical controls of uranium migration through Tims Branch, particularly with respect to the changes over the last 30+ years. Current wetland conditions do not favor significant U movement, but long-term changes in local and regional hydrology may alter this delicate biogeochemical balance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The latest Hauterivian-earliest Aptian time interval includes three episodes of significant environmental change (Faraoni, late early-Barremian, and Taxy Episodes). This time interval appears to partially overlap with large-scale volcanic activity related to the Tristan da Cunha plume along the Rio Grande Rise, High Arctic large igneous province volcanism, and the early phase in the formation of the greater Ontong Java LIP in the Pacific. The establishment of exact temporal relationships between volcanic activity and environmental change remains, however, a major challenge, due to the scarcity of numerical ages for the Early Cretaceous. We report mercury (Hg) contents in uppermost Hauterivian-lowermost Aptian marl/limestone alternations from seven sections along a N S transect in the Western Tethys. The Hg contents in marl samples display rather scattered records, which are generally well correlated with the total organic carbon (TOC) records. In associated limestone beds, five distinct spikes in Hg concentrations occur in three intervals (latest Hauterivian, early Barremian, and latest Barremian). The small amounts of organic matter (<0.2 wt%) in the limestones suggest that organic matter only played a limited role in Hg sequestration. Three Hg peaks in the middle of the Balearites balearis Zone, in the Faraoni level, and in the early Barremian occur only in one of the seven studied sections, which indicate a regionally variable distribution of Hg during these episodes. However, two distinct enrichments in Hg concentrations at the top of the B. balearis Zone (below the Faraoni level) and the M. sarasini Zone (below the Taxy level) appear comparable and correlatable between the sections. These data indicate that important volcanic activity antedating the Faraoni and the Taxy episodes may have contributed to the onset of associated environmental and ecological perturbations during the latest Hauterivian and latest Barremian, such as carbonate platform drowning phases. Organic-rich, fine-grained sedimentary rocks, such as black shales, are important geochemical archives providing information on the evolution of seawater composition and biological activity over the past 3 billion years. While biological productivity and sedimentation rates greatly affect the organic matter content in these rocks, mechanisms linking these two processes remain poorly resolved. Here, we examine the interactions of clay minerals with the marine planktonic cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002. We suggest that clays settling through the water column could influence carbon and trace metal burial in three ways: (1) the interaction of reactive clay surfaces with the bacterial cells increases organic matter deposition via mass increase in a seawater growth medium by several orders of magnitude; (2) reactive bacterial cells become completely encased within a clay shroud, enhancing the preservation potential of this organic matter; and (3) the trace metal content of the biomass buried along with metals sorbed to the clay particles contributes to the trace metal concentrations of the black shale precursor sediments. Significantly, our findings imply that the chemical composition of ancient, organic-rich, fine-grained deposits are not only archives of ancient seawater composition and redox state, but they also provide a record of the degree of biological activity in the water column through geological time. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to examine the effect of using three different rates (zero, low-input, and high-input) of a mineral fertilizer (nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg)) on growth and yield of pepper cultivated in a soil after biofumigation (with horse manure at the rate of 4 kg· m- 2) and solarization. Several physiological traits related with pepper plant development (leaf mineral concentration, net photosynthesis rate, transpiration, leaf sugar, and chlorophyll concentration) and fruit yield were determined. In T-1, chlorophyll was significantly lower and sugar concentration was significantly higher than in those where mineral fertilizers had been added (T-2 and T-3). There were no significant differences in photosynthetic rate among treatments. Increasing mineral fertilizer rates increased vegetative growth at the expense of fruit yield. Leaf nutrient concentrations most affected by the treatments were the N-fractions, and changes in the other parameters measured are discussed on the basis of these differences. Organic fertilizer is a key component of agricultural sustainability and significantly contributes to the improvement of soil fertility. The values of nutrients such as organic matter and nitrogen in organic fertilizers positively affect plant growth and cause environmental problems when used in large amounts. Hence the importance of implementing fast detection of nitrogen (N) and organic matter (OM). This paper examines the feasibility of a framework that combined a particle swarm optimization (PSO) and two multiple stacked generalizations to determine the amount of nitrogen and organic matter in organic-fertilizer using visible near-infrared spectroscopy (Vis-NIR). The first multiple stacked generalizations for classification coupled with PSO (FSGC-PSO) were for feature selection purposes, while the second stacked generalizations for regression (SSGR) improved the detection of nitrogen and organic matter. The computation of root means square error (RMSE) and the coefficient of determination for calibration and prediction set (R2) was used to gauge the different models. The obtained FSGC-PSO subset combined with SSGR achieved significantly better prediction results than conventional methods such as Ridge, support vector machine (SVM), and partial least square (PLS) for both nitrogen (R2p = 0.9989, root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) = 0.031 and limit of detection (LOD) = 2.97) and organic matter (R2p = 0.9972, RMSEP = 0.051 and LOD = 2.97). This study examined the influence of soil physicochemical properties on the sorption, desorption and kinetics of beryllium (Be) uptake and release on soils from a legacy waste site in Australia. This information is needed to help explain the current distribution of Be at the site and evaluate potential future environmental risks. Sorption was determined by a batch study and key soil properties were assessed to explain Be retention. The soil was favourable for sorption of Be (up to 99%) due to organic content, negative surface charge, soil oxyhydroxides (Fe/Al/Mn–O/OH) and the porosity of the soil structure. Lesser sorption was observed in the presence of a background electrolyte (NaNO 3). Sorption closely followed pseudo second order kinetics and was best described by the Langmuir model. FTIR analysis suggested that chemisorption was the predominant mechanism of Be sorption. Desorption was very low and best described by the Freundlich model. The low desorption reflected the high K d (up to 6624 L/kg), and the presence of hysteresis suggested partially irreversible binding of Be with active surfaces of the soil matrix (minerals, SOM, oxyhydroxides of Fe/Al/Mn etc.). Intra-particle diffusion of Be and entrapment in the pores contribute to the irreversible binding. The sorption behaviour of Be helped to explain the relative immobility of Be at the site despite the significant quantities of Be disposed. Soil physicochemical properties were significant for Be sorption, through influencing both the uptake and desorption, and this demonstrates the implications of these measurements for evaluating potential future risks to the environment.
