- Abstract
In Lucan’s Bellum civile or Pharsalia, before the decisive battle of Pharsalus, Pompey’s depraved son, Sextus, decides to ask the famous witch Erictho in order to come to know the future. Erictho restores to life the corpse of a soldier who has just died and he reveals what he has seen in Hades: the wicked politicians triumph, while the good ones are in mourning. These are the genuines advocates of the republic, while those are the revolutionaries such as Drusus, the Gracchi, Marius and Catilina, enemies of Rome and Caesar’s predecessors in breaking Rome’s traditions and values in the past. The corps also adds that for Pompey and his good descendants a place will be reserved in the serene part of the Afterlife: the Elysians Fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
