- Abstract
Within Islamic texts, there are qualifications of God that are apparently anthropomorphic. These qualifications are called khabari attributes. The Mushabbiha reached anthropomorphism from the manifestation of those qualifications while predecessors left their meaning to God to abstain from anthropomorphism. The Jahmiyya, the Mu'tazila and the later orthodox Sunni theologians did not evaluate according to their external meanings but construed them properly to the doctrine of divine exemption. However, it is controversial with whom this interpretation has started within the orthodox Sunni theologians. While Izmirli Ismail Hakki states that it was introduced by Al-Juwayni, classical sources indicate that this was a general approach among successors rather than individual attitude. This study has tried to determine by whom and which fractions within Sunni scholars the tradition of allegorical interpretation was initiated, by chronologically examining the classical Islamic theology literature. In this context, the data obtained by the inductive method was subjected to a deep analysis and consistent result was tried to be reached. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
