Formaldehyde induces oxidative damage in hippocampal tissue and blood serum by suppressing antioxidant defenses and increasing lipid peroxidation. This results in damage to DNA, proteins, and lipids within cells, disrupting neuronal functions, and may even lead to cell death (apoptosis). Apoptosis occurs as a cellular response triggered by formaldehyde through various mechanisms, including mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and DNA damage. Arbutus unedo L. (AUL), which is rich in antioxidants, represents a potential countermeasure. The aim of our study is to investigate the immunohistochemical and biochemical effects of AUL fruit extract (AUE) on apoptosis and oxidative stress induced by FA exposure in the rat hippocampus. The rats were divided into four groups: the experimental group (EG) received 20 mg/kg AUE by oral gavage and 10 ppm FA inhalation; the formaldehyde group (FG) received 10 ppm FA inhalation only; the sham group (SG) received 10 mg/kg AUE by oral gavage; and the control group (CG) underwent routine observation. Hippocampal tissue was isolated after blood sampling. A number of physical changes, such as yellowing of feathers and tail spots, were observed in FA-exposed groups. The biochemical analysis showed significant differences in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), malondialdehyde (MDA), GSH (Glutathione) and nitric oxide (NO) levels between the groups. The AUE-treated groups had reduced MDA levels, suggesting a potential reduction in oxidative stress, along with lower apoptotic cell rates in caspase-3 assessments. The FG rats had lower BDNF levels than CG. The SG had the fewest apoptotic cells. All these findings indicate AUE's potential to mitigate neuron damage and reduce oxidative stress. Ethnopharmacological relevance Arbutus unedo L., the strawberry tree (Ericaceae family) is of increasing interest because of its common traditional, industrial, chemical and pharmaceutical uses. The plant is a typical evergreen plant of the Mediterranean basin, as well as of other regions with hot summers and mild rainy winters. This review covers the studies relevant to Arbutus unedo L. utilization in the current pharmacological therapy. Materials and methods The available information on traditional uses, phytochemistry and biological activities of Arbutus unedo L. was collected from scientific databases through a search using the keywords ‘ Arbutus unedo L.’ and/or ‘strawberry tree’ in ‘Google Scholar’, ‘Pubmed’, ‘Sciencedirect’, ‘SpringerLink’, ‘Web of Science - Clarivate Analytics’ and ‘Wiley’. Unpublished Ph.D. and M.Sc. dissertations were also consulted for chemical composition, biological activities and traditional uses of Arbutus unedo L. and for manual search of additional references. Results The fruits of the plant have been traditionally used as antiseptics, diuretics and laxatives in folk medicine, while the leaves have been used due to their diuretic, urinary antiseptic, antidiarrheal, astringent, depurative and antihypertensive properties. According to the scientific literature survey, different extracts obtained from Arbutus unedo L. have demonstrated a high pharmacological potential due to their in vitro and preclinical antibiotic, antifungal, antiparasitic, antiaggregant, antidiabetic, antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, antitumoral, antioxidant, and spasmolytic properties. Conclusion This review suggests that A. unedo is a promising source of phytopharmaceutical products. The potential advantages of Arbutus unedo are related with the presence of polyphenolic compounds in its composition. However, further studies are needed to ascertain some profitable effects in humans. The beneficial effects associated with this shrub suggest that Arbutus unedo can be used for the development of new drugs to treat diseases such diabetes, hypertension, among others. Background and Aims Mediterranean trees have patterns of cambial activity with one or more pauses per year, leading to intra-annual density fluctuations (IADFs) in tree rings. We analysed xylogenesis (January 2015-January 2016) in Pinus pinea L. and Arbutus unedo L., co-occurring at a site on Mt. Vesuvius (southern Italy), to identify the cambial productivity and timing of IADF formation. Methods Dendrochronological methods and quantitative wood anatomy were applied and enabled IADF identification and classification. Key Results We showed that cambium in P. pinea was productive throughout the calendar year. From January to March 2015, post-cambial (enlarging) earlywood-like tracheids were observed, which were similar to transition tracheids. The beginning of the tree ring was therefore not marked by a sharp boundary between latewood of the previous year and the new xylem produced. True earlywood tracheids were formed in April. L-IADFs were formed in autumn, with earlywood-like cells in latewood. In A. unedo, a double pause in cell production was observed, in summer and winter, leading to L-IADFs in autumn as well. Moreover, the formation of more than one IADF was observed in A. unedo. Conclusions Despite having completely different wood formation models and different life strategies, the production of earlywood, latewood and IADF cells was strongly controlled by climatic factors in the two species. Such cambial production patterns need to be taken into account in dendroecological studies to interpret climatic signals in wood from Mediterranean trees. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Naturally growing Arbutus unedo L. and Phillyrea angustifolia L. mature shrubs with similar leaf sclerophyllous index were studied. The aim was to evaluate whether: 1) ultraviolet radiation (UV) effects on plant development differ depending on the type of UV radiation (UV-A or UV-B), 2) rainfall amount modulates plant responses to UV and 3) seasonal climatic conditions influence the response of plants to the UV and/or rainfall treatments applied. To achieve these goals, A. unedo and P. angustifolia plants were subjected to UV-B exclusion (UVA), UV-B + UV-A exclusion (UV0) or near-ambient UV (UVBA) levels, in combination with two rainfall conditions (natural rainfall or rainfall reduction). Leaf morphological (leaf mass per area, leaf density, thickness and area), physiological (leaf relative water content, gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence) and biochemical (leaf C and N content, and leaf concentration of photosynthetic pigments and phenols) parameters were analysed seasonally for a year. Effects of UV and rainfall treatments on most of the parameters analysed in both species did not depend on the season. In any of the two species, morphological parameters responded to the treatments, likely because of the high leaf mass per area of the sampled fully-developed leaves. In A. unedo, neither physiological nor biochemical leaf traits varied significantly among UV conditions, probably due to their intrinsic high leaf concentration of phenols, which could also explain the lack of correlation between leaf traits and leaf carbon content. Conversely, leaf nitrogen content was highly correlated with leaf features when A. unedo plants were grown exposed only to UV-A radiation. Overall, A. unedo would be less responsive to UV, but not to a decrease in water availability, with plants displaying a water-spender strategy under reduced rainfall. In contrast, P. angustifolia responded at physiological level to the combination of both treatments. Indeed, plants subjected to low rainfall and only UV-A showed lower leaf transpiration rates and stomatal conductance than UV0 plants, higher leaf electron transport rates than UVBA plants, and the highest leaf water use efficiency. These results suggest that, under reduced rainfall, plant exposure only to UV-A would trigger the water-saving response typical of P. angustifolia , despite the mild reduction (20%) in soil water content applied. Under natural conditions, this UV-A-induced response of plants to mild water deficit seems to be masked by the presence of UV-B radiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Antioxidant activity, colour and some nutritional properties of hot air and freeze-dried strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L.) fruits were investigated. Additionally, the effects of two pre-treatments, namely ethyl oleate and water blanching, were compared in terms of drying characteristics. For determination of antioxidant activities in ethanol extracts, two different analytical methods were used: 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl scavenging activity and β-carotene bleaching activity. As a result, the ethyl oleate pre-treatment shortened the drying time by hot air method and gave a higher 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl scavenging activity (82.16 ± 0.34%), total phenolic content (7.62 ± 1.09 µg GAE/g extract), ascorbic acid content (236.93 ± 20.14 mg/100 g), besides hydromethylfurfural was not observed. Freeze-dried fruits exhibited higher ascorbic acid content (368.63 ± 17.16 mg/100 g) than those fresh fruits (231.33 ± 19.51 mg/100 g) and nearly 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl activity (93.52 ± 0.41 %) to fresh fruits (94.03 ± 1.18%). Colour characteristics, sugar content and mineral contents of fruits were significantly affected by pre-treatments and drying methods (p < 0.05). It is concluded that the drying of strawberry tree fruits should bring a valuable and attractive foodstuff to food industry due to the rich nutritional components, antioxidant activity and colour. Another conclusion from this study is that the freeze-drying is the best drying method to keep the nutritional value, antioxidant activity and sensory properties of fruits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
