With the regular development of the global epidemic, the global port shipping supply is tight. The problem of port congestion, soaring freight rates, and hard-to-find container space has emerged. This paper proposes a new joint berth-quay crane allocation model, namely E-B&QC, by taking the minimum of the time in the port of the ship, the cost of extra transportation distance for collector trucks in the land area of the port, and the cost of extra waiting time for ships. Then, the deficiencies of the sparrow search algorithm (SSA) are considered in solving the E-B&QC model, and the SSA is improved based on the three-dimensional Cat chaos mapping and quantum computing theory. Chaotic Quantum Sparrow Search Algorithm (CQSSA) is proposed, population individual coding rules are formulated, also E-B&QC model solving algorithm is established. Finally, a new berth-crane allocation optimization method, namely, E-B&QC-CQSSA, is proposed. Subsequently, the feasibility and superiority of the proposed allocation model and solution algorithm are tested according to the actual data of a small river port in the south and a medium-sized river port in the north. Simulation examples show that the E-B&QC model can develop different high-quality solutions for container ports under different working conditions, and the more complex the actual situation of the port, the more significant the optimization effect. Responses of Sesbania rostrata and S. canriabina to Pb, Zn, Cu and Cd toxicities were assessed by a seed-suspending seedbed( SSS) approach. The results showed that the SSS approach was suitable for testing the tolerance of a plant to the stress of toxic metals. The end points include seed germination success, straightened radicle and hypocotyl of the seedlings from the seeds. The measurements could be done easily and accurately. It was found that the elongation of radicle was the most sensitive indicator to the stress of heavy metals among the end points. When exposure to lower or medium concentrations of Pb, Zn, and Cd, the development of the lateral roots were favorable. Species of S. rostrata was more tolerant than S. cannabina to the heavy metals, especially to Zn and Cd. The EDn, of Pb, Zn, Cu and Cd were 32.90, 5.32, 4.40 arid 12.00 μg/ml for S. rostrata, respectively, and they were 30.11, 2.87, 4.05 and 4.94 μg/ml respectively for S. cannabina. Cell permeability and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) were found to be enhanced in diabetic retinopathy, and the aim of this study was to investigate the underlying mechanism. ARPE-19 cell line or primary retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells were cultured under high or normal glucose conditions. Specific shRNAs were employed to knock down ADP-ribosylation factor 6 (ARF6), GEP100, or VEGF receptor 2 (VEGFR2) in ARPE-19 or primary RPE cells. Cell migration ability was measured using Transwell assay. Western blotting was used to measure indicated protein levels. RPE cells treated with high glucose showed increased cell migration, paracellular permeability, EMT, and expression of VEGF. Knockdown of VEGFR2 inhibited the high-glucose-induced effects on RPE cells via inactivation of ARF6 and MAPK pathways. Knockdown ARF6 or GEP100 led to inhibition of high-glucose-induced effects via inactivation of VEGFR2 pathway. Knockdown of ARF6, but not GEP100, decreased high-glucose-induced internalization of VEGFR2. High-glucose enhances EMT and cell permeability of RPE cells through activation of VEGFR2 and ARF6/GEP100 pathways, which form a positive feedback loop to maximize the activation of VEGF/VEGFR2 signaling. This paper presents experimental studies of vibration-assisted grinding with small-amplitude vibration (in the order of 1 µm) in terms of ground surface finish and tool life. The objectives are to obtain finer surface finishes on molds and longer tool life. The investigation shows that vibration-assisted grinding can improve surface finishes when compared with conventional grinding. Two different vibration frequencies are conducted in the experiments. Results show that surface finish and tool life are influenced by different process parameters. In vibration-assisted grinding, the best surface finish is obtained by using higher frequency of 11.4 kHz and lower feed rates. In this study, vibration-assisted grinding can extend tool life more than twice as that in conventional grinding. It is also shown that tool life in vibration-assisted grinding can be significantly improved by using minimum quantity lubrication (MQL). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The association between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and Rhynchrelyrum repens was investigated. In six abandoned quarries in the Pearl River Delta area, R. repens was found to be associated with nine AMF species, including Glomus versiforme, G. brohultii, G. microaggregatum, G. clarum and G. claroideum, Acaulospora delicata, A. mellea, A. mollowae and Entrophospora infrequens. The genus Glomus and the species G. brohultii were recorded at the highest frequencies. Three typical arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) structures, i.e. hyphae, vesicles and arbuscules, were found in the roots of the R. repens specimens collected from all the quarries investigated. Vesicles were the most frequently recorded structure. Results of a container-based experiment showed that R. repens had very high mortality (83.3%) in the absence of AMF in soil containing sufficient P (phosphorus); this indicates that R. repens is an obligate mycotroph. The presence of AMF significantly increased the biomass accumulation of R. repens seedlings ( p < 0.01). It was also observed that AMF colonization was related to soil P and K (potassium) utilization by R. repens seedlings. To reduce cadmium (Cd) pollution of food chains, screening and breeding of low-Cd-accumulating cultivars are the focus of much study. Two previously identified genotypes, a low-Cd-accumulating genotype (LAJK) and a high-Cd-accumulating genotype (HAJS) of pakchoi (Brassica chinesis L.), were stressed by Cd (12.5 µM) for 0 h (T0), 3 h (T3) and 24 h (T24). By comparative transcriptome analysis for root tissue, 3005 and 4343 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in LAJK at T3 (vs T0) and T24 (vs T3), respectively, whereas 8677 and 5081 DEGs were detected in HAJS. Gene expression pattern analysis suggested a delay of Cd responded transcriptional changes in LAJK compared to HAJS. DEG functional enrichments proposed genotype-specific biological processes coped with Cd stress. Cell wall biosynthesis and glutathione (GSH) metabolism were found to involve in Cd resistance in HAJS, whereas DNA repair and abscisic acid (ABA) signal transduction pathways played important roles in LAJK. Furthermore, the genes participating in Cd efflux such as PDR8 were overexpressed in LAJK, whereas those responsible for Cd transport such as YSL1 were more enhanced in HAJS, exhibiting different Cd transport processes between two genotypes. Hair is increasingly used as a biomarker for human exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs). However, the internal and external sources of hair POPs remain a controversial issue. This study analyzed polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in human hair and serum from electronic waste recycling workers. The median concentrations were 894 ng/g and 2868 ng/g lipid in hair and serum, respectively. The PCB concentrations in male and female serum were similar, while concentrations in male hair were significantly lower than in female hair. Significant correlations between the hair and serum PCB levels and congener profiles suggest that air is the predominant PCB source in hair and that hair and blood PCB levels are largely dependent on recent accumulation. The PCB95, 132, and 183 chiral signatures in serum were significantly nonracemic, with mean enantiomer fractions (EFs) of 0.440-0.693. Nevertheless, the hair EFs were essentially racemic (mean EFs = 0.495-0.503). Source apportionment using the Chemical Mass Balance model also indicated primary external PCB sources in human hair from the study area. Air, blood, and indoor dust are responsible for, on average, 64.2%, 27.2%, and 8.79% of the hair PCBs, respectively. Human hair has been widely used as a bioindicator for human persistent organic pollutants (POPs) exposure, but studies on the sources of hair POPs and the relationship between hair and body burden are limited. This study analyzed the possible source apportionment of hair PBDEs and examined the relationship between PBDE concentrations in paired hair and serum from e-waste recycling workers. Using the ratio of BDE 99/47 and BDE 209/207 as indices, we calculated that only 15% of the highly brominated congeners (nona- and deca-BDE congeners) comes from exogenous (external) exposure for both female and male hair, but an average of 64% and 55% of the lower-brominated congeners (tetra- to penta-BDE congeners) come from exogenous exposure for female and male hair, respectively. The higher contribution of exogenous exposure for lessbrominated congeners could be related to their relatively lower log KOW and higher volatility than higher-brominated congeners, which make them more readily to evaporate from dust and then to be adsorbed on hair. Higher hair PBDE levels and higher exogenous exposure of less-brominated congeners in females than in males can be attributed to a longer exogenous exposure time for females than males. Significant positive relationships were found in trito hepta-BDE congeners (BDE 28, 47, 66, 85, 100, 153, 154, and 183) (R = 0.36-0.55, p < 0.05) between hair and serum, but this relationship was not found for octa- to deca-BDE. Difference in the half-lives between highly brominated congeners and lessbrominated congeners could be a reason. Dechlorane Plus (DP) and a dechlorination product 1,6,7,8,9, 14,l5,l6,17,l7,18-octadeca-7,l5-diene (anti-Cl11-DP), were measured in human hair and indoor dust collected from an e-waste recycling area and two control areas (rural and urban) in South China. DP was detected in hair and dust samples at concentrations ranging from 0.02-58.32 ng/g and 2.78-4197 ng/g, respectively. anti-Cl11-DP, mainly detected in human hair and dust samples from the e-waste recycling area, ranged from nd (nondetected) to 0.23 ng/g in hair and from nd to 20.22 ng/g in dust. Average values of anti-DP fractional abundance (fanti ratio) in hair of e-waste dismantling workers (0.55 ± 0.11) and dust from e-waste recycling workshops (0.54 ± 0.15) were significantly lower than those in other groups (0.62-0.76 means for hair and 0.66-0.76 means for dust). Significantly positive correlation between DP concentrations in dust and hair and similarity in fanti ratios between hair and dust suggest that ingestion of dust comprise one of the major routes for DP exposure. Significantly positive relationships were also observed between anti-Cl11-DP and anti-DP for both hair and dust samples with similar regression line slopes. The ratios of anti-Cl11-DP to anti-DP between hair and dust show no significant difference. These results suggest that anti-Cl11-DP in the human body is likely accumulated from the environmental matrix and not formed from biotransformation of the parent DP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phytochelatins (PCs) play an important role in detoxification of heavy metals in plants. PCs are synthesized from glutathione by phytochelatin synthase (PCS), a dipeptidyltransferase. Sesbania rostrata is a tropical legume plant that can tolerate high concentrations of Cd and Zn. In this study, the S. rostrata PCS gene (SrPCS) and cDNAs were isolated and characterized. Southern blot and sequence analysis revealed that a single copy of the SrPCS gene occurs in the S. rostrata genome, and produces four different SrPCS mRNAs and proteins, SrPCS1-SrPCS4, by alternative splicing of the SrPCS pre-mRNA. The SrPCS1 and SrPCS3 proteins conferred Cd tolerance when expressed in yeast cells, whereas the SrPCS2 and SrPCS4 proteins, which lack the catalytic triad and the N-terminal domains, did not. These results suggested that SrPCS1 and SrPCS3 have potential applications in genetic engineering of plants for enhancing heavy metal tolerance and phytoremediation of contaminated soils. Environmental pollutants are suspected to be a cause of global declines in amphibian populations, but few data are available on the bioaccumulation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in amphibians. To examine the tissue distribution, biomagnification potential, and maternal transfer of PBDEs in frogs, eighteen PBDE congeners were measured in the muscle, liver, and egg tissues of rice frogs (Rana limnocharis) and insects collected from an electronic waste (e-waste) recycling site in South China. PBDE levels in the frogs ranged from 0.63 to 11.6, 4.57 to 56.2, and 10.7 to 125 ng/g wet wt in the muscles, livers, and eggs, respectively. The frogs exhibited a unique congener profile, compared to those in aquatic and terrestrial species, with BDEs 99, 153, 163, 209, and 47 as the dominant congeners, intermediating between aquatic and terrestrial species. Most of the PBDE congeners in general showed higher affinity to liver than to muscle tissue. Except for BDEs 28, 47, 66, 138, and 206, the average biomagnification factors (BMFs) for all PBDE congeners were greater than 1.0, providing clear evidence of their biomagnification from insects to frogs. A parabolic relationship between log BMFs and bromine atom numbers or log Kow of PBDEs was observed, with the maximum BMF values for PBDEs with 6 bromine atoms (or at a log Kow, of approximately 8.0). Relatively higher levels of 3-MeO-BDE 47 were found in male frogs, suggesting that mule frogs in the present study might have higher metabolic capacity for PBDEa compared to female frogs. The ratio of levels in egg/female liver, indicating mother-to-egg transfer capacity, increased with increasing bromine atom numbers up to 7 and then declined as the bromine atom numbers rose. This indicated that the physicochemical properties of the congeners (e.g., Kow, molecular sizes and structures), resulting in different affinities to transport proteins, might impact their maternal transfer in frogs. Persistent halogenated compounds (PHCs), such as dichlo- rodiphenyltrichloroethane and its metabolites (DDTs), hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (HCHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE), and polybrominated biphenyl 153 (PBB 153), were quantified in muscles of five waterbird species collected from an extensive e-waste recycling region in the Pearl River Delta, South China. PCBs, at concentrations up to 1,400,000 ng/g lipid, were the dominant contaminants contributing to 80%-90% of PHCs. PBDEs and organochlorine pesticides (sum of DDTs and HCHs) contributed approximately equally to total PHCs with median concentrations ranging from 37-2200 and 530-4300 ng/g lipid, respectively. This contaminant distribution pattern was different from those acquired by most studies conducted in other regions. The concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs in Chinese-pond heron from the present study were higher than those from most other previous studies with birds having similar trophic levels. The extensive e-waste recycling activities were probably the cause of the elevated PCB and PBDE levels in the bird samples. The median concentrations of PBB 153 and DBDPE ranged from 3-140 and 10-176 ng/g lipid, respectively. The frequent detection and high concentrations of DBDPE in piscivorous birds implicate a potential environmental concern for this "new" brominated flame retardant Additionally, the interspecies differences in the levels of contaminants and species-specific PBDE congener patterns were also elucidated in the present study. The relationship between Mikania micrantha invasion and soil microbial communities was studied across the invasive gradients varying from 0 to 38, 80, and 100% coverage of M. micrantha. The results showed microbial biomass C, N, and P all increased as the cover of M. micrantha increased. Soil microbial quotient Cmic/Corg (microbial biomass C/organic C) tended to increase linearly with the cover of M. micrantha. Basal respiration (BR) also showed a similar trend. The respiratory quotient qCO2 decreased with M. micrantha invasion, and remained at quite a constantly low level in the invasive soils. Community level physiological profiles (CLPP) analyses indicated that M. micrantha invasion tended to result in higher average well color development, substrate richness, and functional diversity. Average utilization of specific substrate guilds was highest in M. micrantha monoculture. Principle component analysis of CLPP further indicated that M. micrantha monoculture was distinctly separated from the native area and the ecotones. In conclusion, M. Mikania invasion improved soil microbial biomass, respiration and utilization of carbon sources, and decreased qCO2, thus created better soil conditions, which in turn were more conducive to the growth of M. micrantha. The large number of abandoned quarries in many countries presents challenges for restoration of these extremely degraded habitats. To understand soil and plant development in these extreme habitats at a most critical stage of restoration, we evaluated the edaphic conditions and natural vegetation of three large quarries in southern China 3, 5, and 7 years following abandonment. Although soil fertility (organic matter, and N, P, K concentrations) did not differ significantly over a few years, it was much higher than would be expected from newly weathered soil and was comparable to that of the adjacent garden soil on level ground with no slope. This suggests that soil formation on the steep slopes of quarry cliffs is a secondary migration process rather than a primary weathering process. Vegetation cover increased from 10.6 to 18.6 and 23.4%, and species abundance increased from 8 to 11 and 12 species, and from 3 to 6 and 7 families. Plant species composition changed from predominantly annual and perennial herbaceous species to a more diverse community with drought-tolerant and heliophilous shrubs. The vegetation cover was highly positively correlated with soil depth and soil volume (p < 0.001), and also significantly correlated with soil organic matter, total N, and available N and P concentrations (p < 0.05). Invasions of exotic plant species are among the most pervasive and important threats to natural ecosystems. However, the effects of plant invasions on soil processes and soil biota have not been adequately investigated. Changes were studied in soil microbial communities where Mikania micrantha was invading a native forest community in Neilingding Island, Shenzhen, China. The soil microbial community structure (assessed by phospholipid fatty acid [PLFA] profiles) and function (assessed by enzyme activities), as well as soil chemical properties were measured. The results showed that the invasion of M. micrantha into the evergreen broadleaved forests in South China changed most of the characteristics in studied soils. Microbial community structure and function differed significantly among the native, two ecotones, and exotic-derived soils. For PLFA profiles, we observed a significant increase in aerobic bacteria but a decrease in anaerobic bacteria in the M. micrantha monoculture as compared to the native and ecotones. The ratio of cy19:0 to18:1 ω7 gradually declined but mono/sat PLFAs increased as M. micrantha became more dominant. Both ratios were significantly related to pH according to regression analysis, therefore, pH was a sensitive indicator reflecting the invaded soil subsystem succession. The microbial community composition clearly separated the native soil from the invaded soils by principal component analysis (PCA) and discriminant analysis (DA). For enzyme activities, 7 of 9 enzymes ( β-glucosidase, invertase, protease, urease, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, and phenol oxidase) showed the similar trend that the activities were highest in the exotic, intermediate in the two ecotones, and lowest in the native community. In most cases, enzyme activities were influenced by soil chemical properties, especially by pH value and soil organic matter. Differences in the structural variables were well correlated to differences in the functional variables as demonstrated by canonical correlation analysis (CCA).
