The first formal definition of randomness, seen as a property of sequences of events or experimental outcomes, dates back to Richard von Mises' work in the foundations of probability and statistics. The randomness notion introduced by von Mises is nowadays widely regarded as being too weak. This is, to a large extent, due to the work of Jean Ville, which is often described as having dealt the death blow to von Mises' approach, and which was integral to the development of algorithmic randomness—the now-standard theory of randomness for elements of a probability space. The main goal of this article is to trace the history and provide an in-depth appraisal of two lesser-known, yet historically and methodologically notable proposals for how to modify von Mises' definition so as to avoid Ville's objection. The first proposal is due to Abraham Wald, while the second one is due to Claus-Peter Schnorr. We show that, once made precise in a natural way using computability theory, Wald's proposal constitutes a much more radical departure from von Mises' framework than intended. Schnorr's proposal, on the other hand, does provide a partial vindication of von Mises' approach: it demonstrates that it is possible to obtain a satisfactory randomness notion—indeed, a canonical algorithmic randomness notion—by characterizing randomness in terms of the invariance of limiting relative frequencies. More generally, we argue that Schnorr's proposal, together with a number of little-known related results, reveals that there is more continuity than typically acknowledged between von Mises' approach and algorithmic randomness. Even though von Mises' exclusive focus on limiting relative frequencies did not survive the passage to the theory of algorithmic randomness, another crucial aspect of his conception of randomness did endure; namely, the idea that randomness amounts to a certain type of stability or invariance under an appropriate class of transformations. Bayesian agents, argues Belot, are orgulous: they believe in inductive success even when guaranteed to fail on a topologically typical collection of data streams. Here we shed light on how pervasive this phenomenon is. We identify several classes of inductive problems for which Bayesian convergence to the truth is topologically typical. However, we also show that, for all sufficiently complex classes, there are inductive problems for which convergence is topologically atypical. Last, we identify specific topologically typical collections of data streams, observing which guarantees convergence to the truth across all problems from certain natural classes of effective inductive problems. Hydrogen is considered as one of the key energy carrier for the forthcoming green transition because of its high energy content and harmless combustion products. Water electrolysis, powered by green electricity, is one of the most efficient and promising technologies for H 2 production. Cheap and earth abundant metals-based electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) are needed to drive a green transition based on hydrogen produced by water electrolysis. Perforated plate type Ni electrodes are prepared by a cost-effective electroforming process, designed to work for water electrolysis in alkaline environment in a flow-through configuration facilitating the release of bubbles produced by HER. The aim of this work is to synthesize a catalyst layer based on NiCuMo alloy produced by an electrodeposition process tailored to maximize electrocatalytic performances, increasing the electrochemical surface active area (more than 50 times) and its activity. Next-generation alkaline water electrolyzers will be based on zero-gap configuration to further reduce costs related to technology and to improve performance. Here, anodic porous transport layers (PTLs) for zero-gap alkaline electrolysis are prepared through a facile one-step electrodeposition of Ni,Fe,Co-based layered double hydroxides (LDH) on 304 stainless steel (SS) meshes. Electrodeposited LDH structures are characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) confirming the formation of high surface area catalytic layers. Finally, bi and trimetallic LDH-based PTLs are tested as electrodes for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1 M KOH solution. The best electrodes are based on FeCo LDH, reaching 10 mA cm−2 with an overpotential value of 300 mV. These PTLs are also tested with a chronopotentiometric measurement carried out for 100 h at 50 mA cm−2, showing outstanding durability without signs of electrocatalytic activity degradation. Ni-succinate/tartrate metal-organic framework (MOF) structures were synthesized on 304 stainless steel (SS) mesh by electrodeposition to prepare porous electrodes for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline conditions. Morphological and compositional studies confirmed the synthesis of Ni-coordinated MOF nanoparticles onto the SS mesh. Succinate and tartrate-based MOFs were successfully tested as electrocatalysts for OER in 1 M KOH solution in both batch and flow-through cell configurations, assessing a low Tafel slope value of 46 mV dec−1 and overpotential value at 10 mA cm−2 of 326 mV. These electrodes further showed high electrocatalytic durability in a 100 h stability test at 50 mA cm−2. The stability test was carried out in both 1 M KOH and in 6 M KOH aqueous solution, being the latter close to the real electrolyte composition of industrial alkaline electrolyzers, proving an outstanding electrocatalytic durability. Theoretical analysis helped in understanding reaction mechanism depending on the nature of the active phase. Anodic oxides were grown to 50 V on Ta-Nb sputtering deposited alloys, with high Nb content, in acetate ions containing an aqueous solution to study the effect of the anodizing bath composition on anodic layers' dielectric properties. Photoelectrochemical measurements proved the presence of a photocurrent in the band gap of photon energy lower than oxides, due to optical transitions involving localized electronic states as a consequence of acetate ions incorporation. Flat band potential value estimates assessed the insulating nature of the anodic oxides grown in the acetate buffer solution. Differential capacitance measurements showed that the highest capacitance value was measured for the sample grown on Ta-66%Nb. This capacitance value was higher with respect to those estimated for pure Ta and pure Nb anodic layers and with respect to the same alloy anodized in NaOH solution, i.e., acetate-free anodizing bath. The flow field plate (FFP) design is a key factor for enhancing the electrochemical performance of Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEFCs) through optimal reactants' distribution, low-pressure drops, and efficient water removal. The effect of geometrical features of the pin-type FFP design on the electrochemical performance of a 48 cm2 H 2 -fed Fuel Cell (FC) was assessed through polarization curves recording and current and temperature distribution maps along the electrode active area. The study was performed by changing excess air stoichiometry and cathode relative humidity (RH). Low-pressure drops were measured using pin-type FFPs; regardless of geometrical features, they were one order of magnitude lower than those of a single-channel serpentine FFP. Channel width and number of pins greatly influenced the current distribution along the active area and, consequently, the electrochemical performance of FCs. In particular, the best electrochemical performance was reached at air stoichiometry 4 and cathode RH = 100 % by using FFP with the highest coverage factor (65 %) and the lowest channel width (1 mm). Current distribution maps demonstrated that this FFP geometry led to an almost homogeneous current distribution and efficient water removal also at high current density values. On the contrary, low coverage factor (45 %) and high channel width led to worse electrochemical performances due to an uneven reactants distribution and an inefficient water removal, causing cell flooding. • Study of a fuel cell using different pin-type flow field plate designs is carried out. • Pin-type flow field experiences lower pressure drops than serpentine flow field. • Current and temperature distribution maps are recorded under several operating conditions. • Increasing coverage factor and decreasing channel width lead to more homogeneous current distribution. Anodic oxides were galvanostatically grown on sputtered Ti-12at%Si alloy at 5 mA cm−2 up to 50 V in phosphoric acid and sodium citrate aqueous electrolytes in order to investigate the effect of anions incorporation (if any) on dielectric properties of the grown oxides. Photoelectrochemical measurements supported the occurrence of incorporation of citrate anions when anodizing is carried out in a citrate-containing solution. Indeed, two different absorption thresholds were estimated due to energy transitions involving localized states in the mobility gap. Differential capacitance measurements showed higher capacitance values for anodic oxide grown in the citrate-containing solution, with a beneficial effect on the dielectric constant. The increased capacitance can be explained considering the synergistic effect of a more favourable anodizing ratio provided by the presence of Si cations from the bare alloy as well as the incorporation of foreign species due to the inward migration of citrate anions from the electrolyte during the anodizing process. Numerous learning tasks can be described as the process of extrapolating patterns from observed data. One of the driving intuitions behind the theory of algorithmic randomness is that randomness amounts to the absence of any effectively detectable patterns: it is thus natural to regard randomness as antithetical to inductive learning. Osherson and Weinstein [11] draw upon the identification of randomness with unlearnability to introduce a learning-theoretic framework (in the spirit of formal learning theory) for modelling algorithmic randomness. They define two success criteria—specifying under what conditions a pattern may be said to have been detected by a computable learning function—and prove that the collections of data sequences on which these criteria cannot be satisfied correspond to the set of weak 1-randoms and the set of weak 2-randoms, respectively. This learning-theoretic approach affords an intuitive perspective on algorithmic randomness, and it invites the question of whether restricting attention to learning-theoretic success criteria comes at an expressivity cost. In other words, is the framework expressive enough to capture most core algorithmic randomness notions and, in particular, Martin-Löf randomness—arguably, the most prominent algorithmic randomness notion in the literature? In this article, we answer the latter question in the affirmative by providing a learning-theoretic characterisation of Martin-Löf randomness. Anodic oxides were grown to 50 V on Ta in several organic ions containing anodizing baths. Their properties were compared with anodic Ta oxide film grown to the same formation voltage in 0.1 M NaOH. Anodizing process carried out in sodium citrate led to the growth of the anodic oxide with the best blocking properties whilst, when Ta is anodized in sodium adipate, a significant part of the circulated charge is wasted in side reactions, such as oxygen evolution. Photoelectrochemical measurements showed the presence of optical transitions at energy lower than the band gap for the anodic films grown in citrate and tartrate electrolytes, attributed to localized electronic states located close to the valence band mobility edge of the films generated by anions incorporation into the oxide. Differential capacitance measurements proved an increase by 17% in capacitance value for the oxide grown in citrate-containing solution with respect to that grown in NaOH electrolyte. Composite organic–inorganic proton exchange membranes for H2–O2 fuel cells were fabricated by ionotropic gelation process combining a biopolymer (chitosan) with a heteropolyacid (silicotungstic acid). According to scanning electron microscopy analysis, compact, homogeneous and free-standing thin layers were synthesized. X-ray diffraction proved the crystallinity of the fabricated membranes and showed the presence of Chitosan Form I polymorph soon after the reticulation step and of the Form II polymorph after the functionalization step. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrated that the Keggin structure of the heteropolyacid is maintained inside the membrane even after the fabrication process. These membranes worked properly as proton conductors in a low-temperature (25 °C) fuel cell apparatus using hydrogen as fuel recording a promising power density peak of 268 mW cm−2 with a Pt loading of 0.5 mg cm−2. Effective packaging solutions are pivotal in addressing sustainability challenges associated with food consumption. Sustainable packaging must not only reduce ecological impact but also ensure food quality preservation, minimize the risk of foodborne diseases, and contribute to mitigating the accumulation of plastic waste. While paper-based food packaging is environmentally friendly, it is susceptible to mold growth when exposed to specific humidity and temperatures, potentially leading to spoilage and safety concerns. This study introduces an innovative modeling approach employing survival analysis to estimate time to visible mold growth on paper-based materials used in food-contact packaging under varying environmental conditions. The objective is to establish an alternative statistical framework for assessing the impact of relative humidity and temperature on mold proliferation. This approach is particularly relevant to novel sustainable packaging materials in the food industry, especially when dealing with censored data. Survival heatmaps are developed to simplify the visualization of spoilage likelihood, measured by time to visible growth at a given confidence level. Redox-based resistive switching memories (ReRAM) based on metal oxides are considered as the next generation non-volatile memories and building units for neuromorphic computing. Using different deposition techniques results however in different structural and electric properties, modulating the device performance. In this study HfO 2 and Nb 2 O 5 were prepared electrochemically by anodizing sputtering-deposited Hf and Nb in borate buffer solution. Photoelectrochemical measurements were used to study the solid state properties of the anodic oxides, such as band gap and flat band potential. In the case of anodic HfO 2 , detected photocurrent is ascribed to optical transitions between localized (generated by the presence of oxygen vacancies into the oxide) and extended states. Impedance measurements disclosed the formation of n-type Nb 2 O 5 and insulating HfO 2 . Pt top electrode was deposited onto the metal/anodic oxide junctions to fabricate ReRAM cells. Whereas switching behaviour of Nb/anodic Nb 2 O 5 /Pt cells was not reliable, good endurance and retention performances were proved in the case of Hf/anodic HfO 2 /Pt cells, showing that electrochemical growth of the oxides can be a reliable way to fabricate solid electrolytes for resistive switching memories. Anodic films were grown to 5 V and 50 V on Nb, Ta and Ta-Nb sputtering deposited alloys in 0.1 M ammonium biborate solutions in order to induce N incorporation. Their properties were compared to those of N free anodic films grown to the same formation voltages in 0.1 M NaOH. Photoelectrochemical measurements evidenced the presence of optical transitions at energy lower than the band gap of the oxides, attributed to localized states located close to the valence band mobility edge of the films, generated by N 2p orbitals, with consequent narrowing of the band gap. Since N incorporation occurs in the outer 70% of the anodic films, the dependence of the measured photocurrent as a function of photon energy was modelled considering a bi-layered film with an outer N doped layer and an inner N free layer. The mobility of the photogenerated carriers involving states due to N 2p orbitals is lower than the mobility of extended states due to O 2− . Differential capacitance measurements allow to prove an enhancement of the dielectric constant of at least 20% due to the electrochemical N doping. The potentiality of anodic TiO 2 as an oxide material for the realization of resistive switching memory cells has been explored in this paper. Cu/anodic-TiO 2 /Ti memristors of different sizes, ranging from 1 × 1 μm 2 to 10 × 10 μm 2 have been fabricated and characterized. The oxide films were grown by anodizing Ti films, using three different process conditions. Measured IV curves have shown similar asymmetric bipolar hysteresis behaviors in all the tested devices, with a gradual switching from the high resistance state to the low resistance state and vice versa, and a R OFF /R ON ratio of 80 for the thickest oxide film devices. This paper describes the process adopted at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) to quantify uncertainties affecting the characterization of very-low-level radioactive waste. Radioactive waste is a by-product of the operation of high-energy particle accelerators. Radioactive waste must be characterized to ensure its safe disposal in final repositories. Characterizing radioactive waste means establishing the list of radionuclides together with their activities. The estimated activity levels are compared to the limits given by the national authority of the waste disposal. The quantification of the uncertainty affecting the concentration of the radionuclides is therefore essential to estimate the acceptability of the waste in the final repository but also to control the sorting, volume reduction and packaging phases of the characterization process. The characterization method consists of estimating the activity of produced radionuclides either by experimental methods or statistical approaches. The uncertainties are estimated using classical statistical methods and uncertainty propagation. A mixed multivariate random vector is built to generate random input parameters for the activity calculations. The random vector is a robust tool to account for the unknown radiological history of legacy waste. This analytical technique is also particularly useful to generate random chemical compositions of materials when the trace element concentrations are not available or cannot be measured. The methodology was validated using a waste population of legacy copper activated at CERN. Radioactive waste is produced as a consequence of preventive and corrective maintenance during the operation of high-energy particle accelerators or associated dismantling campaigns. Their radiological characterization must be performed to ensure an appropriate disposal in the disposal facilities. The radiological characterization of waste includes the establishment of the list of produced radionuclides, called “radionuclide inventory”, and the estimation of their activity. The present paper describes the process adopted at CERN to characterize very-low-level radioactive waste with a focus on activated metals. The characterization method consists of measuring and estimating the activity of produced radionuclides either by experimental methods or statistical and numerical approaches. We adapted the so-called Scaling Factor (SF) and Correlation Factor (CF) techniques to the needs of hadron accelerators, and applied them to very-low-level metallic waste produced at CERN. For each type of metal we calculated the radionuclide inventory and identified the radionuclides that most contribute to hazard factors. The methodology proposed is of general validity, can be extended to other activated materials and can be used for the characterization of waste produced in particle accelerators and research centres, where the activation mechanisms are comparable to the ones occurring at CERN. Electronic components like printed circuit boards (PCBs) are commonly used in CERN's accelerator complex. During their lifetime some of these PCBs are exposed to a radiation field of protons, neutrons and pions and are activated. In view of their disposal towards the appropriate final repository, a radiological characterization must be performed. The present work proposes a general characterization procedure based on the definition of a reference chemical composition, on the calculation of the corresponding radionuclide inventory and on the measurement of a tracer radionuclide. This method has been validated with real-life cases of electronic boards which were exposed to the typical radiation fields in CERN's accelerators. The activation studies demonstrate that silver is the key element with respect to the radiological characterization of electronic waste due to the production of Ag-110m and Ag-108m. A sensitivity analysis shows that the waiting time is the main parameter affecting the radionuclide inventory. Results also indicate that, as is the case of other families of radioactive waste, an accurate assessment of the radiological inventory of PCBs would require the precise knowledge of their chemical composition, as well as the radiation field to which they were exposed. Anodic films of different thickness (∼30 nm and 70 nm) were grown by anodizing sputtering-deposited Ta-19at% Al to different formation voltages. N incorporation into the anodic films was inducing by performing the anodizing process in ammonium containing solutions. Layered anodic films were prepared by a double formation procedure with a first anodizing step in ammonium biborate solution and second anodizing step in borate buffer solution, or vice versa. Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy was employed to show the distribution of N across the oxide. Photoelectrochemical measurements evidenced a red shift of the light absorption threshold due to N incorporation. A model was proposed and tested to model the dependence of quantum yield on photon energy and, thus, to estimate the band gap of the layers for both anodized Ta and Ta-19at% Al. Al-Ta mixed oxides were grown by anodizing sputter-deposited Al-Ta alloys of different composition. Photocurrent spectra revealed a band gap, E g , slightly independent on Ta content and very close to that of anodic Ta 2 O 5 (∼4.3 eV) with the exception of the anodic film on Al-10at% Ta, which resulted to be not photoactive under strong anodic polarization. The photoelectrochemical characterization allowed to estimate also the oxides flat band potential and to get the necessary information to sketch the energetic of the metal/oxide/electrolyte interfaces. Impedance measurements allowed to confirm the formation of insulating material and to estimate the dielectric constant of the oxides, which resulted to be monotonically increasing with increasing Ta content (from 9 for pure Al 2 O 3 to 30 for pure Ta 2 O 5 ). • ZnSn(OH) 6 coating is prepared by heterogeneous crystallization on galvanized steel. • ZnSn(OH) 6 coating preserves cathodic protection of galvanized carbon steel. • Zinc hydroxystannate improves the corrosion resistance in Cl− containing solutions. • Zinc hydroxystannate coating enhances bond strength at the rebar/concrete interface. Zinc hydroxystannate (ZnSn(OH) 6) coatings were deposited on galvanized carbon steel samples by an electroless heterogeneous crystallization process. Structural and morphological features of the coatings as a function of the immersion time were determined by X-ray diffraction, Raman Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy revealing the presence of truncated octahedrons of crystalline ZnSn(OH) 6. Electrochemical characterization in a simulated concrete pore solution without and with addition of chloride ions proved that the cathodic protection is preserved and that ZnSn(OH) 6 improved the corrosion resistance of the rebars. Pull-out tests demonstrated an enhanced bond strength at the rebar/concrete interface and, thus, an improved adhesion after the heterogeneous crystallization process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bipolar Membrane Reverse Electrodialysis (BMRED) can be used to produce electricity exploiting acid-base neutralization, thus representing a valuable route in reusing waste streams. The present work investigates the performance of a lab-scale BMRED module under several operating conditions. By feeding the stack with 1 M HCl and NaOH streams, a maximum power density of ~17 W m−2 was obtained at 100 A m−2 with a 10-triplet stack with a flow velocity of 1 cm s−1, while an energy density of ~10 kWh m−3 acid could be extracted by a complete neutralization. Parasitic currents along feed and drain manifolds significantly affected the performance of the stack when equipped with a higher number of triplets. The apparent permselectivity at 1 M acid and base decreased from 93% with the five-triplet stack to 54% with the 38-triplet stack, which exhibited lower values (~35% less) of power density. An important role may be played also by the presence of NaCl in the acidic and alkaline solutions. With a low number of triplets, the added salt had almost negligible effects. However, with a higher number of triplets it led to a reduction of 23.4–45.7% in power density. The risk of membrane delamination is another aspect that can limit the process performance. Nuclear power plants and research facilities commonly employ the so-called scaling factor (SF) method to quantify the activity of difficult-to-measure (DTM) radionuclides within their radioactive waste packages. The method relies on the establishment of a relationship between an easy-to-measure (ETM) radionuclide, called key nuclide (KN), and difficult-to-measure radionuclides, after the collection of a representative sample from the waste population. The distribution of the scaling factors, as well as the parameters defining the distribution, can change over time. Therefore, the accuracy of the calculated activity of the DTM radionuclides depends on the capacity of the scaling factor method to follow the time evolution of the waste population. In practice, waste producers collect periodically new samples from the waste population and check the variation and the validity of the scaling factors. In this article, we present a simple Bayesian framework to update scaling factors when a new data set becomes available. This study explores the efficacy of plasma-processed air (PPA) as a non-thermal treatment for decontamination of dry food surfaces, such as wheat grains, black peppercorns, and onion flakes. We compared the effect of various inoculum types of Enterococcus faecium , revealing a higher resistance of the powder form compared with liquid and slurry inocula on black peppercorns. Furthermore, Enterococcus faecium NRRL B-2354 appeared to be a suitable control indicator for Salmonella. The PPA efficacy varied across matrices, being higher on medium agar (7.0 ± 0.5 log 10), followed by wheat grains (2.1 ± 0.2 log 10), black peppercorns (1.5 ± 0.1 log 10), and no reduction on onion flakes. Variation was also found across microorganisms, as the natural microbiota was reduced on wheat grains (1.6 ± 0.6 log 10 for mesophilic count and 0.8 ± 0.3 log 10 for spores), while on black peppercorns this was only achieved after upscaling (1.3 ± 0.2 log 10 for mesophilic and 1.5 ± 0.1 log 10 for spores). We investigate the modal logic of stepwise removal of objects, both for its intrinsic interest as a logic of quantification without replacement, and as a pilot study to better understand the complexity jumps between dynamic epistemic logics of model transformations and logics of freely chosen graph changes that get registered in a growing memory. After introducing this logic (MLSR) and its corresponding removal modality, we analyze its expressive power and prove a bisimulation characterization theorem. We then provide a complete Hilbert-style axiomatization for the logic of stepwise removal in a hybrid language enriched with nominals and public announcement operators. Next, we show that model-checking for MLSR is PSPACE-complete, while its satisfiability problem is undecidable. Electrodeposition of superhydrophobic coatings was carried out on anodized AA7075 alloy to further enhance its corrosion resistance. Several compositions of electrodeposition bath were studied to find the most suitable one to obtain superhydrophobic coating. Scanning Electron Microscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy proved the deposition of coatings with different characteristics depending on electrodeposition bath composition. Highest contact angle value (∼ 160°) and highest corrosion resistance were obtained for the Mn-containing coating, proving also high stability after 21 days of immersion in an aqueous solution mimicking seawater. Experiments on flat pellet samples were carried out to split the effect due to the material composition with respect to that due to the coating morphological features, estimating the vacuum fraction of the superhydrophobic coatings according to the Cassie Baxter model. The potential of polymeric heart valves (PHV) prostheses is to combine the hemodynamic performances of biological valves with the durability of mechanical valves. The aim of this work is to design and develop a new tri-leaflet prosthetic heart valve (HV) made from styrenic block copolymers. A computational finite element model was implemented to optimize the thickness of the leaflets, to improve PHV mechanical and hydrodynamic performances. Based on the model outcomes, 8 prototypes of the designed valve were produced and tested in vitro under continuous and pulsatile flow conditions, as prescribed by ISO 5840 Standard. A specially designed pulse duplicator allowed testing the PHVs at different flow rates and frequency conditions. All the PHVs met the requirements specified in ISO 5840 Standard in terms of both regurgitation and effective orifice area (EOA), demonstrating their potential as HV prostheses. Abstract: Dolphins have adapted their anatomic structures to survive in the water environment and so far, the behaviour of their respiratory system during diving has not been fully understood, since they being protected species cannot be subjected to invasive analysis. Aim of this work is to model the tracheo-bronchial tree of the bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus to study its behaviour during diving by coupling experimental in vitro mechanical characterisation of airways tissues to finite element computational analyses. Furthermore, a comparison was performed between the mechanical behaviour of tracheo-bronchial trees of dolphins and that of the goat, a terrestrial mammal, whose conformation of the upper airways is similar to that of the human, to determine how different structures respond to pressure in a controlled experimental set-up. The comparison between the goat and dolphin airways'' mechanical behaviour highlights a lower collapsibility of the dolphin structure due to higher stiffness, lack of musculature and irregular shape of cartilaginous rings. Our data showed that the air entrapped into the airways plays a key role in avoiding the collapse. This effect is enhanced when accounting for the air flow escaping the alveoli that start to collapse during descent, even at depth as shallow as 10m of sea water. The comparison between airways behaviour of marine and terrestrial mammals may help in shedding a light on the biomechanical behaviour of human airways during breath-holding diving. Electrical energy storage can enhance the efficiency in the use of fluctuating renewable sources, e.g. solar and wind energy. The Acid/Base Flow Battery is an innovative and sustainable process to store electrical energy in the form of pH and salinity gradients via electrodialytic reversible techniques. Two electromembrane processes are involved: Bipolar Membrane Electrodialysis during the charge phase and its opposite, Bipolar Membrane Reverse Electrodialysis, during the discharge phase. For the first time, the present work aims at predicting the performance of this energy storage device via the development of a dynamic mathematical model based on a multi-scale approach with distributed parameters. Four models, each one at a different scale, are fully integrated in a comprehensive process simulator. The model was preliminary validated by a comparison with experimental data and a good agreement was found. A sensitivity analysis was performed to identify the most detrimental phenomena. Results indicate a loss of 25–35% of Round Trip Efficiency caused by parasitic currents in the manifolds. Therefore, they may represent the main limit to the present technology performance in scaled-up stacks converting more power. Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is a blue energy technology for clean and sustainable electricity harvesting from the mixing entropy of salinity gradients. Recently, many efforts have been devoted to improving the performance of RED units by developing new ion-exchange membranes and by reducing the detrimental phenomena affecting the process. Among these sources of "irreversibility", the shortcut currents (or parasitic currents) flowing through alternative pathways may affect the process efficiency. Although such phenomena occur in several electrochemical processes (e.g. fuel cells, bipolar plate cells and vanadium redox flow batteries), they have received a poor attention in RED units. In this work, a process simulator with distributed parameters was developed and experimentally validated to characterize the shortcut currents and to assess their impact in RED stack performance under different designs and operating conditions. Results showed that shortcut currents can play a crucial role in stacks with a large number of cell pairs when the electrical resistance of the parasitic pathways is relatively low, e.g. configurations with concentrated brines, high resistance membranes, short channels or large manifolds. Future designs of efficient industrial-scale units cannot ignore these aspects. The high-spectral-resolution detection of hard X-rays (E > 20 keV) is a challenging and nearly unexplored area in space astrophysics. Traditionally hard X-ray detectors present moderate spectral resolutions, although few tens of eV one could open new frontiers in the study of nuclear processes and high-temperature plasma dynamics in energetic processes. This can be achieved by using cryogenic microcalorimeters. Within a research activity aimed at developing arrays of neutron transmutation-doped germanium (NTD-Ge) microcalorimeters for the high-spectral-resolution detection (about 50 eV@60 keV) of hard X-rays (20 keV < E<100 keV), we developed an electroplating process to fabricate high-thickness (> 60 μm) bismuth absorber arrays. Abstract Four different C 3 N 4 specimens have been prepared, a bulk one (MCN), a thermally etched (MCN-TE), a solid prepared by hydrothermally treating MCN with H 2 O 2 (MCN-H 2 O 2) and a polymeric carbon nitride-hydrogen peroxide adduct (MCN-TE-H 2 O 2). The principal aim of this work was to correlate the capability of the prepared material to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), under irradiation, with their photocatalytic activities in terms of conversion and selectivity for partial oxidation reactions. Photoelectrochemical studies revealed that MCN-TE represented the best material in terms of photoconductivity, whereas MCN-H 2 O 2 was defective and evidenced a poor mobility of carriers. EPR studies showed a maximum generation of reactive oxygen species irradiating the MCN-TE sample. The photocatalytic activity of these materials in the selective oxidation of three different alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes, both under UV and natural solar light, showed that the highest conversion was obtained in the presence of the MCN-TE sample, whereas the most selective one was MCN-TE-H 2 O 2. Under solar light irradiation the performances of the powders were generally better than those under UV light. The characterization of the C 3 N 4 -based materials well justified their photocatalytic activity. Abstract ZnO thin films were deposited by home-made DC sputtering of zinc target under mixed gases (Argon, Oxygen) plasma on glass substrates. Films were deposited by varying oxygen partial pressure (PO 2) from 0.09 to 1.3 mbar in the deposition chamber, at a fixed substrate temperature of 100 °C. The samples were characterized by photoluminescence (PL), X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical transmissions (UV–vis), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrical (Hall effect) measurements. The results indicate that by varying the oxygen pressure in the deposition chamber, the films show a precise and well defined photoluminescence emissions for each range of pressure covering almost the entire visible domain (UV, UV-Violet, Violet, Blue, and Red) with high intensities. Moreover, the deposited films have different defects levels. The XRD analysis indicates that the films are well grown along the c-axis peak, but with different crystalline quality. Optical measurements reveal a high transmission, up to 90%, in the spectral region between 400 and 2500 nm and a large variation of the optical band gap (3.16–4.34 eV). As an application of the deposited ZnO films, the photo-catalytic degradation of a synthetic solution of Rhodamine B (RhB) poured on a ZnO thin film was successfully achieved and an elimination rate of 38% was obtained after exposing the film to solar light for 3 h. Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are promising electrochemical systems capable of producing electricity from the electrochemical oxidation of methanol and the reduction of oxygen. In this work, the effectiveness of the addition of sulfuric acid as a supporting electrolyte for methanol fuel composition was assessed. The results showed that the peak of power curve in DMFCs with Pt/C cathode electrocatalysts increased progressively from 70 mW cm−2 (0 mM of H 2 SO 4) to 115 mW cm−2 with a concentration of 100 mM of H 2 SO 4. These results underlined the positive effect of the addition of a supporting electrolyte in the methanol aqueous solution on the electrochemical output that was enhanced. Platinum group metal-free (PGM-free) electrocatalysts based on Fe-N x -C type were also tested being insensitive to methanol crossover and oxidation at the cathode. DMFC with Fe–N–C cathode catalysts result in a performance of 21.5 mW cm−2. In these operating conditions, the addition of supporting electrolyte does not seem to bring excessive advantage. Short stability tests are presented and an overall assessment of the resistances within the system is also discussed. • Addition of H 2 SO 4 in methanol feed boosts DMFC power density using Pt/C catalyst. • Power density is not dependent on H 2 SO 4 concentration using PGM-free catalyst for ORR. • Addition of H 2 SO 4 does not affect short-term cell performance. • Catalysts morphology and composition are not affected by H 2 SO 4 presence. Styrene-based block copolymers are promising materials for the development of a polymeric heart valve prosthesis (PHV), and the mechanical properties of these polymers can be tuned via the manufacturing process, orienting the cylindrical domains to achieve material anisotropy. The aim of this work is the development of a computational too! for the optimization of the material microstructure in a new PHV intended for aortic valve replacement to enhance the mechanical performance of the device. An iterative procedure was implemented to orient the cylinders along the maximum principal stress direction of the leaflet. A numerical model of the leaflet was developed, and the polymer mechanical behavior was described by a hyperelastic anisotropic constitutive law. A custom routine was implemented to align the cylinders with the maximum principal stress direction in the leaflet for each iteration. The study was focused on valve closure, since during this phase the fibrous structure of the leaflets must bear the greatest load. The optimal microstructure obtained by our procedure is characterized by mainly circumferential orientation of the cylinders within the valve leaflet. An increase in the radial strain and a decrease in the circumferential strain due to the microstructure optimization were observed. Also, a decrease in the maximum value of the strain energy density was found in the case of optimized orientation; since the strain energy density is a widely used criterion to predict elastomer's lifetime, this result suggests a possible increase of the device durability if the polymer microstructure is optimized. The elimination of very low level waste towards the French national repository requires their radiological characterization to estimate the radionuclide inventory and the associated activities within a waste package. Such characterization is performed by means of activation calculations and measurements. Two elimination projects have been identified at CERN, to dispose of bulk metallic waste and cables activated in the CERN accelerator complex. Based on the experience gained over the last 4 years, we develop a large scale elimination process to dispose of such types of activated equipment.
