Rotate vector (RV) reducer is mainly applied in high-precision transmission. Its manufacturing errors strongly influence transmission accuracy. In order to select the optimal gear profile parameters and manufacturing accuracy to meet the transmission conditions in actual machining, a model of gear tooth contact analysis of involute and cycloid transmission considering tooth profile modification and manufacturing errors was established according to the principle of coordinate transformation and conjugate contact of gear. The sensitivity of different manufacturing errors to transmission errors was analyzed. At the same time, the optimization method of gear tooth profile modification parameters and manufacturing accuracy configuration under transmission reliability constraints was designed. The results showed that based on the optimization calculation of samples by the DIRECT algorithm, it was possible to obtain a set of RV reducer modification parameters and manufacturing tolerance bands with the lowest manufacturing cost under the condition of transmission accuracy. The selected parameters had high-reliability characteristics. Therefore, this method provides a theoretical optimization reference for manufacturing high-reliability RV reducer. Context. Wagyu Feeder Check is a genomic-based tool designed to provide genomic estimated breeding values (GEBV) for five feedlot growth and carcase traits. At present, Wagyu Feeder Check is based on a reference population of 8316 genotyped and phenotyped Australian fullblood (FB; N = 2120) Wagyu and Wagyu-crossed (XB; N = 6196) cattle, principally Wagyu × Angus F1 animals. Aims. We provide technical details behind the development of the Wagyu Feeder Check and validate the ability of its GEBV to predict differences in performance of Wagyu cattle in daily weight gain at feedlot, carcase weight, carcase eye muscle area, carcase marbling score and carcase rump fat at the P8 site. Methods. Data supplied from eight commercial supply chains across Australia was used to generate GEBV using mixed-model equations that incorporated a genomic relationship matrix build with 82 504 autosomal markers. The bias, dispersion, and accuracy of the GEBV were evaluated using a four-way cross-validation scheme where, in each turn, the phenotypes from a random 1549 (or 25%) XB cattle were set as missing. Key results. The genomic estimate of the Wagyu content in the FB and XB population averaged 99.12% and 59.55%, respectively, and with most of the non-Wagyu content associated with Angus. The estimates of heritability (± s.e.) were 0.497 ± 0.016, 0.474 ± 0.004, 0.347 ± 0.014, 0.429 ± 0.003 and 0.422 ± 0.003 for daily weight gain at feedlot, carcase weight, eye muscle area, marbling and rump fat, respectively. Averaged across the four XB validation populations, the accuracy of GEBV was 0.624, 0.634, 0.385, 0.620, and 0.526 for the same set of traits. Conclusions. Genomic predictions generated by Wagyu Feeder Check can predict differences in feedlot and carcase performance of Australian Wagyu cattle. Given the large content of Angus in the XB population, further research is required to determine the predictive ability of GEBV in Wagyu × Bos indicus and Wagyu × dairy animals. Implications. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) secreted by cells into the bloodstream and other bodily fluids, including exosomes, have been demonstrated to be a class of significant messengers that mediate intercellular communications. Tumor-derived extracellular vesicles are enriched in a selective set of biomolecules from original cells, including proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids, and thus offer a new perspective of liquid biopsy for cancer diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring. Owing to the heterogeneity of their biogenesis, physical properties, and molecular constituents, isolation and molecular characterization of EVs remain highly challenging. Microfluidics provides a disruptive platform for EV isolation and analysis owing to its inherent advantages to promote the development of new molecular and cellular sensing systems with improved sensitivity, specificity, spatial and temporal resolution, and throughput. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art advances in the development of microfluidic principles and devices for EV isolation and biophysical or biochemical characterization, in comparison to the conventional counterparts. We will also survey the progress in adapting the new microfluidic techniques to assess the emerging EV-associated biomarkers, mostly focused on proteins and nucleic acids, for clinical diagnosis and prognosis of cancer. The adsorption of several organo-functional groups (-NH2, -CH3, -COOH, -CHO, and -OH) and alanine on Li decorated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are studied, based on the first-principle calculations. The calculated binding energies on Li-CNTs show obvious enhancement relative to the cases on pure CNTs, from about 0.3 eV to about 1.4 eV except -CH3, which is attributed to strong electrostatic dipole attraction between positive Li ion and polarized organo-functional groups by charge population analysis. It is interesting that the adsorption could be effectively adjusted under external electric field for the interaction with Li-group dipole. For the combinational contribution of charge redistribution and interaction of inherent electric dipole with external electric field, the adsorption of these organo-functional groups shows two discriminative variety trends. Finally, the adsorption of alanine including -NH2, -CH3, and -COOH groups is studied as an illustration to generalize above conclusions to organic macromolecule on Li decorated CNTs. Garnet-structured Li7La3Zr2O12 is a promising solid Li-ion electrolyte for all-solid-state Li-metal batteries and Li-redox-flow batteries owing to its high Li-ion conductivity at room temperature and good electrochemical stability with Li metal. However, there are still three major challenges unsolved: (1) the controversial electrochemical window of garnet, (2) the impractically large resistance at a garnet/electrode interface and the fast lithium-dendrite growth along the grain boundaries of the garnet pellet, and (3) the fast degradation during storage. We have found that these challenges are closely related to a thick Li[sub 2]CO[sub 3] layer and the Li-Al-O glass phase on the surface of garnet materials. Here we introduce a simple method to remove Li2CO3 and the protons in the garnet framework by reacting garnet with carbon at 700 ºC; moreover, the amount of the Li-Al-O glass phase with a low Li-ion conductivity in the grain boundary on the garnet surface was also reduced. The surface of the carbon-treated garnet pellets is free of Li2CO3 and is wet by a metallic lithium anode, an organic electrolyte, and a solid composite cathode. The carbon post-treatment has reduced significantly the interfacial resistances to 28, 92 (at 65 ºC), and 45 Ω cm² at Li/garnet, garnet/LiFePO4, and garnet/organic-liquid interfaces, respectively. A symmetric Li/garnet/Li, an all-solid-state Li/garnet/LiFePO4, and a hybrid Li-S cell show small overpotentials, high Coulombic efficiencies, and stable cycling performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The natural compound curcumin has previously been reported to inhibit pancreatic cancer cell growth. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms underlying this effect remain unclear. Results from the present study demonstrate that the miR-340/X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP) signaling pathway mediates curcumin-induced pancreatic cancer cell apoptosis. miR-340 was identified to be significantly upregulated following curcumin treatment. In addition, treatment with curcumin or miR-340 induced pancreatic cancer cell apoptosis, whereas silencing endogenous miR-340 significantly inhibited the proapoptotic effect of curcumin. A luciferase reporter assay and western blot analysis identified that the oncogene XIAP is a direct target of miR-340. Furthermore, curcumin treatment significantly reduced XIAP expression, an effect that was rescued by treatment with anti-miR-340. The results of the present study suggest that the miR-340/XIAP signaling pathway is a downstream target of curcumin that mediates its proapoptotic effects on pancreatic cancer cells. Potassium has as rich an abundance as sodium in the earth, but the development of a K-ion battery is lagging behind because of the higher mass and larger ionic size of K+ than that of Li+ and Na+, which makes it difficult to identify a high-voltage and high-capacity intercalation cathode host. Here we propose a cyanoperovskite KxMnFe(CN)6 (0 ≤ x ≤ 2) as a potassium cathode: high-spin MnIII/MnII and low-spin FeIII/FeII couples have similar energies and exhibit two close plateaus centered at 3.6 V; two active K+ per formula unit enable a theoretical specific capacity of 156 mAh g-1; Mn and Fe are the two most-desired transition metals for electrodes because they are cheap and environmental friendly. As a powder prepared by an inexpensive precipitation method, the cathode delivers a specific capacity of 142 mAh g-1. A solid electrolyte with a high Li-ion conductivity and a small interfacial resistance against a Li metal anode is a key component in all-solid-state Li metal batteries, but there is no ceramic oxide electrolyte available for this application except the thin-film Li-P oxynitride electrolyte; ceramic electrolytes are either easily reduced by Li metal or penetrated by Li dendrites in a short time. Here, we introduce a solid electrolyte LiZr2(PO4)3 with rhombohedral structure at room temperature that has a bulk Li-ion conductivity sLi = 2 × 10-4 S·cm-1 at 25 °C, a high electrochemical stability up to 5.5 V versus Li+/Li, and a small interfacial resistance for Li+ transfer. It reacts with a metallic lithium anode to form a Li+-conducting passivation layer (solid-electrolyte interphase) containing Li3P and Li8ZrO6 that is wet by the lithium anode and also wets the LiZr2(PO4)3 electrolyte. Sodium extraction behavior in the rhombohedral Na3MnTi(PO4)3 with the NASICON structure was investigated and shown to have a 0.5 eV separation of the localized-electron Mn3+/Mn2+ and Mn4+/Mn3+ redox energies. Used as a cathode in a sodium-ion half-cell, the redox couples of Mn3+/Mn2+ and Mn4+/Mn3+ exhibit two voltage plateaus located at about 3.6 and 4.1 V vs Na+/Na, respectively. Na3MnTi(PO4)3 also exhibits a small volume change after the extraction of two sodium ions, and the NASICON structure is well-maintained after repeated extraction and insertion of sodium ions. AlCoCrFeNi has excellent mechanical properties, however, its hardness and wear resistance are insufficient for engineering applications. In order to improve the wear resistance of AlCoCrFeNi coating, WC and in-situ TiC particles were used in this work. Subsequently, the microstructure, hardness, and wear resistance were studied in detail. The results showed that the in-situ TiC particles were uniformly distributed in the whole coating, ameliorating the uneven distribution of WC particles. A sound interface was formed between the particles and the coating matrix, proving the composite coating with excellent performance in wear resistance. The phase constituents of the coating matrix were the BCC and B2 phases. And BCC phase occurred lattice distortion due to the dissolution of W atoms, resulting in the solid solution strengthening of coating matrix. Furthermore, with the increase of WC content, a needle W-rich BCC phase appeared in the coating matrix. Finally, the hardness of AlCoCrFeNi-WC/TiC coatings increased from 516.4 HV 0.3 to 808.7 HV 0.3 , and the wear resistance was increased by 14 times. The improvement in hardness can be attributed to the WC particles, in-situ TiC particles, and solid solution strengthening. We prepared the AlCoCrFeNi-WC/TiC coating by laser cladding. The hardness and wear resistance are improved significantly by the WC particles, in-situ TiC particles, and solid solution strengthening. Porous alumina-zirconia ceramics were obtained by infiltrating porous alumina ceramics, which were prepared by tert-butyl alcohol (TBA)-based gel-casting method. Back scattering images of the fracture surface and energy dispersive spectroscopy were performed to obtain composition profiles on the fracture surface and across sections of the sintered composites. The porosity, pore size distribution and compressive strength were also investigated. The results show that the content of zirconia can be adjusted effectively by infiltration times and it decreases with increasing distance from the surface of the samples. The porosity and compressive strength can also be controlled by the infiltration times. With increases of the infiltration times from 1 to 3 cycles, the open porosity decreases slightly from 62.43% to 56.62%, while the compressive strength of the porous alumina-zirconia ceramics increases from 13.57 ± 1.21 to 26.87 ± 2.01 MPa, indicating that the porous ceramics with high porosity and high strength can be prepared by TBA-based gel-casting method combined with the infiltration process. Background: Fleece rot (FR) and body-strike of Merino sheep by the sheep blowfly Lucilia cuprina are major problems for the Australian wool industry, causing significant losses as a result of increased management costs coupled with reduced wool productivity and quality. In addition to direct effects on fleece quality, fleece rot is a major predisposing factor to blowfly strike on the body of sheep. In order to investigate the genetic drivers of resistance to fleece rot, we constructed a combined ovine-bovine cDNA microarray of almost 12,000 probes including 6,125 skin expressed sequence tags and 5,760 anonymous clones obtained from skin subtracted libraries derived from fleece rot resistant and susceptible animals. This microarray platform was used to profile the gene expression changes between skin samples of six resistant and six susceptible animals taken immediately before, during and after FR induction. Mixed-model equations were employed to normalize the data and 155 genes were found to be differentially expressed (DE). Ten DE genes were selected for validation using real-time PCR on independent skin samples. The genomic regions of a further 5 DE genes were surveyed to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) that were genotyped across three populations for their associations with fleece rot resistance. Results: The majority of the DE genes originated from the fleece rot subtracted libraries and over-representing gene ontology terms included defense response to bacterium and epidermis development, indicating a role of these processes in modulating the sheep's response to fleece rot. We focused on genes that contribute to the physical barrier function of skin, including keratins, collagens, fibulin and lipid proteins, to identify SNPs that were associated to fleece rot scores. Conclusions: We identified FBLN1 (fibulin) and FABP4 (fatty acid binding protein 4) as key factors in sheep's resistance to fleece rot. Validation of these markers in other populations could lead to vital tests for marker assisted selection that will ultimately increase the natural fleece rot resistance of Merino sheep. Humidity sensors based on flexible sensitive nanomaterials are very attractive in noncontact healthcare monitoring. However, the existing humidity sensors have some shortcomings such as limited sensitivity, narrow relative humidity (RH) range, and a complex process. Herein, we show that a tin sulphide (SnS) nanoflakes-based sensor presents high humidity sensing behaviour both in rigid and flexible substrate. The sensing mechanism based on the Schottky nature of a SnS-metal contact endows the as-fabricated sensor with a high response of 2491000% towards a wide RH range from 3% RH to 99% RH. The response and recovery time of the sensor are 6 s and 4 s, respectively. Besides, the flexible SnS nanoflakes-based humidity sensor with a polyimide substrate can be well attached to the skin and exhibits stable humidity sensing performance in the natural flat state and under bending loading. Moreover, the first-principles analysis is performed to prove the high specificity of SnS to the moisture (H2O) in the air. Benefiting from its promising advantages, we explore some application of the SnS nanoflakes-based sensors in detection of breathing patterns and non-contact finger tips sensing behaviour. The sensor can monitor the respiration pattern of a human being accurately, and recognize the movement of the fingertip speedily. Background: Hyperuricemia is related to various cardiometabolic diseases in US adults, having an increasingly substantial impact on healthcare resources and costs. Nonetheless, there are limited studies examining the association between Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP) and hyperuricemia in middle-aged and elderly individuals. Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional research study using data obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). All 12,261 participants were classified according to the AIP quartiles. Participants aged <18 years, without Body Mass Index (BMI), waist, blood pressure, stringent Complete Response (sCR), Triglycerides (TG), HDL-C, LDL-C data, alcohol use, and smoking behavior information were excluded. AIP is calculated as the log TG to High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-C) (Log[TG/HDL-C]). We explored the association between AIP and the risk of hyperuricemia using multivariate ordinal logistic regression. Hyperuricemia is widely defined as serum uric acid levels that are at or above 360 mmol/l in women and 420 mmol/l in men. Results: Among 12261 participants included (mean age, 48.0 years), 6080 were male. The prevalence of hyperuricemia was 20.73% in the cross-sectional study. The multivariate-adjusted Hazard Ratios (HRs) and 95% Confidence Interval (CI) for hyperuricemia gradually and significantly increased with the AIP quartiles (1.26 (1.06, 1.49) in Q2, 1.63 (1.39, 1.93) in Q3, and 2.06 (1.76, 2.43) in Q4), following an adjustment for potential confounders. And we observed a non-linear dose-response and a consistent relationship between them after the interaction test stratified by age, sex, BMI, hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and alcohol. Conclusion: On a continuous scale, per 1 unit increase in AIP was associated with multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (95% CI) of 2.06 (1.76, 2.43) for having a higher risk of hyperuricemia. Nonadditive effects may contribute to genetic variation of complex traits. Their inclusion in genetic evaluation models may therefore improve breeding value estimates and lead to more accurate selection decisions. In this study, we evaluated a systematic series of models accounting for additive, dominance and first-order epistatic interaction (additive by additive, GxG; additive by dominance, GxD; and dominance by dominance, DxD) on body yearling weight (YWT) of 2,550 Tropical Composite (TC) and 2,111 Brahman (BB) cattle in Australia. For both breeds, similar estimates of additive and phenotypic variances and narrow and broad-sense heritability values were obtained across the evaluated models except when GxG effect was considered. In this case, additive variance was slightly lower than that obtained in the models which do not consider this effect. The estimated dominance and epistatic variances from additive and dominance effects (AD) and additive, dominance and epistatic effects models (ADE) were greater than that ADH and ADEH models (as described above plus heterozygosity as a covariate). However, all genetic parameter estimates were associated with a large standard deviation. Averaged across ADH and ADHE models, the magnitude of dominance variance compared to the phenotypic variance of YWT was 14% (BB) and 10% (TC). The magnitude of epistasis compared to the phenotypic variance for BB and TC was 17% and 29%, respectively for GxG; 0.7% and 0% for GxD; and 0% and 0% for DxD. The inclusion of nonadditive effects slightly improves the predictive accuracy of breeding values from 0.28 for A to 0.33 for ADHEGxG and from 0.18 for A to 0.23 ADEGxD in BB and TC cattle. Models that included heterozygosity (ADH and ADHE) must be used to estimate nonadditive genetic variance components. A 1 Mb sliding window analysis identified a region on BTA 14 explaining 10.08% and 1.21% of total genetic variance (additive + dominance) of YWT in BB and TC, respectively. Our results suggest that dominance, epistasis, and heterozygosity should be included in models for genetic parameters estimation. Alkali ions can be plated dendrite-free into a liquid alkali-metal anode. Commercialized Na-S battery technology operates above 300 °C. A low-cost Na-K alloy is liquid at 25 °C from 9.2 to 58.2 wt% of sodium; sodium and/or potassium can be plated dendrite-free in the liquid range at room temperature. The co-existence of two alkali metals in an anode raises a question: whether the liquid Na-K alloy acts as a Na or a K anode. Here we show the alkali-metal that is stripped from the liquid Na-K anode is dependent on the preference of the cathode host. It acts as the anode of a sodium rechargeable cell if the cathode host structure selectively accepts only Na+ ions; as the anode of a potassium rechargeable cell if the cathode accepts K+ ions in preference to Na+ ions. This dual-anode behavior means the liquid Na-K alkali-alloy can be applied as a dendrite-free anode in Na-metal batteries as well as K-metal batteries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electrocatalysts for both the oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR and OER) are vital for the performances of rechargeable metal–air batteries. Herein, we report an advanced bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst consisting of porous metallic nickel-iron nitride (Ni3FeN) supporting ordered Fe3Pt intermetallic nanoalloy. In this hybrid catalyst, the bimetallic nitride Ni3FeN mainly contributes to the high activity for the OER while the ordered Fe3Pt nanoalloy contributes to the excellent activity for the ORR. Robust Ni3FeN-supported Fe3Pt catalysts show superior catalytic performance to the state-of-the-art ORR catalyst (Pt/C) and OER catalyst (Ir/C). The Fe3Pt/Ni3FeN bifunctional catalyst enables Zn–air batteries to achieve a long-term cycling performance of over 480 h at 10 mA cm−2 with high efficiency. The extraordinarily high performance of the Fe3Pt/Ni3FeN bifunctional catalyst makes it a very promising air cathode in alkaline electrolyte. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A cross-linked polymer containing pendant molecules attached to the polymer framework is shown to form flexible and low-cost membranes, to be a solid Li+ electrolyte up to 270 °C, much higher than those based on poly(ethylene oxide), to be wetted by a metallic lithium anode, and to be not decomposed by the metallic anode if the anions of the salt are blocked by a ceramic electrolyte in a polymer/ceramic membrane/polymer sandwich electrolyte (PCPSE). In this sandwich architecture, the double-layer electric field at the Li/polymer interface is reduced due to the blocked salt anion transfer. The polymer layer adheres/wets the lithium metal surface and makes the Li-ion flux at the interface more homogeneous. This structure integrates the advantages of the ceramic and polymer. With the PCPSE, all-solid-state Li/LiFePO4 cells showed a notably high Coulombic efficiency of 99.8–100% over 640 cycles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This study was designed to evaluate the effects of oral administration of a water extract made from the Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (RAM) on the immune responses in mice immunized with FMDV type O vaccine. Thirty-five ICR mice were randomly divided into five groups with seven animals in each group, and orally administered daily for 4 days at a dose equivalent to 0, 0.0625, 0.125, 0.25 or 0.5g of dried RAM, respectively. After that, the animals were subcutaneously immunized twice with FMDV vaccine at 2-week intervals. Blood samples were collected 3 weeks after boosting for measurement of FMDV-specific IgG titers and the IgG subclasses, lymphocyte proliferation as well as production IL-5 and IFN-γ. Results indicated that serum FMDV-specific IgG titers and the IgG subclass responses were significantly enhanced in mice orally administered RAM at the dose of 0.25 or 0.5g when compared with the control group (P <0.05). Splenocyte proliferation in response to Con A and LPS and production of IL-5 and IFN-γ by splenocytes were also significantly enhanced (P <0.05). Considering the immunomodulatory effect and safety of RAM demonstrated in this study, this herb deserves further investigation to evaluate its potential improvement of FMD vaccination in other animals such as pigs, goats and cattle. Context: Immune competence is a proxy trait for general disease resistance and is based on combined measures of an animal's ability to mount both a cell-mediated immune response (Cell-IR) and an antibody-mediated immune response (Ab-IR). On the basis of previously described arithmetic, we combined these measures into a single proxy trait for immune competence, named ImmuneDEX (IDEX). Aims: Using a population of 3715 Australian Angus steers (n = 2395) and heifers (n = 1320) with genotypes for 45 364 single-nucleotide polymorphisms, we provide the latest genomic estimates of heritability and genetic correlations for IDEX and the components Cell-IR and Ab-IR immune competence phenotypes. Accuracy and bias of genomic predictions of breeding values are also presented and discussed. Methods: Measures of Cell-IR, Ab-IR and IDEX were analysed jointly in a tri-variate genomic restricted maximum-likelihood model that contained the fixed effects of contemporary group with 80 levels, the linear covariates of age at measurement and change in skin thickness at control site, and the random polygenic (genomic estimated breeding value, GEBV) and residual effects. Following Method LR procedures, we estimate accuracy, bias and dispersion of genomic predictions using a cross-validation scheme based on five year-of-birth cohorts. Key results: We report genomic restricted maximum-likelihood model estimates of heritability of 0.247 ± 0.040 for Cell-IR, 0.326 ± 0.059 for Ab-IR, 0.275 ± 0.046 for IDEX. While a small positive genetic correlation (rg) was estimated between Cell-IR and Ab-IR (rg = 0.138 ± 0.095), strongly positive estimates were obtained between IDEX and Cell-IR (rg = 0.740 ± 0.044) and between IDEX and Ab-IR (rg = 0.741 ± 0.036). Averaged across the five validation sets, the accuracy of GEBV for Cell-IR, Ab-IR and IDEX was 0.405, 0.443 and 0.411 respectively. Also, some significant bias or dispersion can be expected depending on the cohort used as the validation population. Conclusions: Consistent with previous findings, immune competence phenotypes are moderately heritable and accurate GEBV can be generated to allow the selection of cattle with an improved ability to mount a general immune response. Implications: Our analyses suggest that ImmuneDEX will provide a tool to underpin long-term genetic strategies aimed at improving the immune competence of Australian Angus cattle in production systems, which, in turn, is expected to reduce the incidence of disease and our reliance on antibiotics to treat disease. Context. Genomic-based technologies are allowing commercial beef producers to predict the genetic merit of individual animals of unknown pedigree with increased ease and accuracy. Genomic selection tools that can accurately predict the feedlot and carcass performance of steers have the potential to improve profitability for the beef supply chain. Aims. To validate the ability of the Angus SteerSELECT genomic product to predict differences in performance of Australian Angus steers, in terms of carcass weight, marbling score, ossification score and carcass value, using a short-fed (100 days) or long-fed (270 days) finishing protocol at a commercial feedlot. Methods. A reference population of 2763 Australian Angus steers was used to generate genomic prediction equations for three carcass traits, namely, carcass weight, marbling score and ossification. The accuracy and bias of genomic predictions of breeding values were then evaluated using a validation population of 522 Angus steers, either short- or long-fed at a commercial feedlot, by comparing breeding values to measured phenotypes. The potential economic benefits for feedlot operators when using Angus SteerSELECT were estimated on the basis of the ability of the tool to predict the carcass value of steers in the validation population. Key results. The accuracy of genomic predictions of breeding values for carcass weight, marbling score and ossification score were 0.752, 0.723 and 0.734 respectively. When steers were ranked in quartiles for predicted carcass value, calculated using genomic predictions of breeding values for carcass weight and marbling score, the least-square mean carcass value for steers in each quartile, from bottom 25% predicted performers to top 25% predicted performers, were estimated at A$1794, A$1977, A$2021 and A$2148 for short-fed steers and A$3546, A$3780, A$3864 and A $4258 for long-fed steers. Differences in the carcass value least-squares mean between the bottom and top quartile were highly significant (P < 0.001) for both short-fed and long-fed steers. Conclusions. Genomic prediction equations used in Angus SteerSELECT can predict differences in carcass weight, marbling score, ossification score and carcass value in both short-fed and long-fed Australian Angus steers. Implications. Genomic selection tools that can predict differences in performance, in terms of growth and carcass characteristics, of commercial feedlot cattle have the potential to significantly increase profitability for the beef supply chain by improving the quality and consistency of the beef products they produce. Genomic tools to better define breed composition in agriculturally important species have sparked scientific and commercial industry interest. Knowledge of breed composition can inform multiple scientifically important decisions of industry application including DNA marker-assisted selection, identification of signatures of selection, and inference of product provenance to improve supply chain integrity. Genomic tools are expensive but can be economized by deploying a relatively small number of highly informative single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) scattered evenly across the genome. Using resources from the 1000 Bull Genomes Project we established calibration (more stringent quality criteria; N = 1,243 cattle) and validation (less stringent; N = 864) data sets representing 17 breeds derived from both taurine and indicine bovine subspecies. Fifteen successively smaller panels (from 500,000 to 50 SNP) were built from those SNP in the calibration data that increasingly satisfied 2 criteria, high differential allele frequencies across the breeds as measured by average Euclidean distance (AED) and high uniformity (even spacing) across the physical genome. Those SNP awarded the highest AED were in or near genes previously identified as important signatures of selection in cattle such as LCORL, NCAPG, KITLG, and PLAG1. For each panel, the genomic breed composition (GBC) of each animal in the validation dataset was estimated using a linear regression model. A systematic exploration of the predictive accuracy of the various sized panels was then undertaken on the validation population using 3 benchmarking approaches: (1) % error (expressed relative to the estimated GBC made from over 1 million SNP), (2) % breed misassignment (expressed relative to each individual’s breed recorded), and (3) Shannon’s entropy of estimated GBC across the 17 target breeds. Our analyses suggest that a panel of just 250 SNP represents an adequate balance between accuracy and cost—only modest gains in accuracy are made as one increases panel density beyond this point. Objective: Use independent diagnostic data to analyze the screening effectiveness of the pre-Registry commercial driver medical examination (CDME) for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and its sensitivity for hypertension: analyze certification lengths where relevant. Methods: CDME screening results for 1668 drivers were compared to polysomnogram diagnostic test results, and CDME screening results were evaluated for 1155 drivers with at least one insurance claim with a hypertension diagnostic code. Any CDME documentation of the medical condition was considered as detection by screening. Results: CDME sensitivity was 20.7% for moderate OSA (AHI > 15). While sensitivity was 77.5% for hypertension, 93.3% of drivers with Stage 3 hypertension were certified, contrary to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration standards. Conclusions: The pre-Registry CDME was ineffective in screening commercial drivers for OSA. Screening was better for hypertension; incorrect certifications were given to many hypertensive drivers. The layered oxide Na0.67CoO2 with Na+ occupying trigonal prismatic sites between CoO2 layers exhibits a remarkably high room temperature oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity in alkaline solution. The high activity is attributed to an unusually short O–O separation that favors formation of peroxide ions by O−–O– interactions followed by O2 evolution in preference to the conventional route through surface O–OH– species. The dependence of the onset potential on the pH of the alkaline solution was found to be consistent with the loss of H+ ions from the surface oxygen to provide surface O− that may either be attacked by solution OH− or reactwith another O−; a short O–O separation favors the latter route. The role of a strong hybridization of the O–2p and low-spin CoIII/CoIV π-bonding d states is also important; the OER on other CoIII/CoIV oxides is compared with that on Na0.67CoO2 as well as that on IrO2. Flexible and low-cost poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based electrolytes are promising for all-solid-state Li-metal batteries because of their compatibility with a metallic lithium anode. However, the low room-temperature Li-ion conductivity of PEO solid electrolytes and severe lithium-dendrite growth limit their application in high-energy Li-metal batteries. Here we prepared a PEO/perovskite Li3/8Sr7/16Ta3/4Zr1/4O3 composite electrolyte with a Li-ion conductivity of 5.4 × 10-5 and 3.5 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 25 and 45 °C, respectively; the strong interaction between the F- of TFSI- (bistrifluoromethanesulfonimide) and the surface Ta5+ of the perovskite improves the Li-ion transport at the PEO/perovskite interface. A symmetric Li/composite electrolyte/Li cell shows an excellent cyclability at a high current density up to 0.6 mA cm-2. A solid electrolyte interphase layer formed in situ between the metallic lithium anode and the composite electrolyte suppresses lithiumdendrite formation and growth. All-solid-state LijLiFePO4 and high-voltage Li|LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 batteries with the composite electrolyte have an impressive performance with high Coulombic efficiencies, small overpotentials, and good cycling stability. Indium-oxide (In2O3) nanobelts coated by a 5-nm-thick carbon layer provide an enhanced photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO and CH4, yielding CO and CH4 evolution rates of 126.6 and 27.9 µmol h-1, respectively, with water as reductant and Pt as co-catalyst. The carbon coat promotes the absorption of visible light, improves the separation of photoinduced electron-hole pairs, increases the chemisorption of CO2, makes more protons from water splitting participate in CO2 reduction, and thereby facilitates the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO and CH4. NASICON (Na+ super ionic conductor) structures of NaxMV(PO4)3 (M = Mn, Fe, Ni) were prepared, characterized by aberration-corrected STEM and synchrotron radiation, and demonstrated to be durable cathode materials for rechargeable sodium-ion batteries. In Na4MnV(PO4)3, two redox couples of Mn3+/Mn2+ and V4+/V3+ are accessed with two voltage plateaus located at 3.6 and 3.3 V and a capacity of 101 mAh g-1 at 1 C. Furthermore, the Na4MnV(PO4)3 cathode delivers a high initial efficiency of 97%, long durability over 1000 cycles, and good rate performance to 10 C. Garnet-structured solid electrolytes have been extensively studied for a solid-state lithium rechargeable battery. Previous works have been mostly focused on the materials' development and basic electrochemical properties but not the cathode/electrolyte interface. Understanding the cathode interface is critical to enhance chemical stability and electrochemical performance of a solid-state battery cell. In this work, we studied thoroughly the cathode/electrolyte interface between LiCoO2 and Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO). It was found that the high-temperature process to fuse LiCoO2 and LLZO induced cross-diffusion of elements and formation of the tetragonal LLZO phase at the interface. These degradations affected electrochemical performance, especially the initial Coulombic efficiency and cycle life. In a clean cathode interface without the thermal process, an irreversible electrochemical decomposition at > ∼ 3.0 V vs Li+/Li was identified. The decomposition was able to be avoided by a surface modification of LLZO (e.g., Co-diffused surface layer and/or presence of an interlayer, Li3BO3), and the surface modification was equally important to suppress a reaction during air storage. The commercialization of Zn-air batteries has been impeded by the lack of low-cost, highly active, and durable catalysts that act independently for oxygen electrochemical reduction and evolution. Here, we demonstrate excellent performance of NiCo nanoparticles anchored on porous fibrous carbon aerogels (NiCo/PFC aerogels) as bifunctional catalysts toward the Zn-air battery. This material is designed and synthesized by a novel K2Ni(CN)4/K3Co(CN)6-chitosan hydrogel-derived method. The outstanding performance of NiCo/PFC aerogels is confirmed as a superior air-cathode catalyst for a rechargeable Zn-air battery. At a discharge-charge current density of 10 mA cm-2, the NiCo/PFC aerogels enable a Zn-air battery to cycle steadily up to 300 cycles for 600 h with only a small increase in the round-trip overpotential, notably outperforming the more costly Pt/C+IrO2 mixture catalysts (60 cycles for 120 h). With the simplicity of the synthetic method and the outstanding electrocatalytic performance, the NiCo/PFC aerogels are promising electrocatalysts for Zn-air batteries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cubic anti-perovskites with general formula Li3OX (X=Cl, Br, I) were recently reported as superionic conductors with the potential for use as solid electrolytes in all-solid-state lithium ion batteries. These electrolytes are nonflammable, low-cost, and suitable for thermoplastic processing. However, the primary obstacle of its practical implementation is the relatively low ionic conductivity at room temperature. In this work, we synthesized a composite material consisting of two antiperovskite phases, namely, cubic Li3OBr and layered Li7O2Br3, by solid state reaction routes. The results indicate that with the phase fraction of Li7O2Br3 increasing to 44 wt. %, the ionic conductivity increased by more than one order of magnitude compared with pure phase Li3OBr. Formation energy calculations revealed the meta-stable nature of Li7O2Br3, which supports the great difficulty in producing phase-pure Li7O2Br3 at ambient pressure. To study the genetic basis of tick burden and milk production and their interrelationship, we collected a sample of 1961 cattle with multiple tick counts from northern Australia of which 973 had dairy production data in the Australian Dairy Herd Information Service database. We calculated heritabilities, genetic and phenotypic correlations for these traits and showed a negative relationship between tick counts and milk and milk component yield. Tests of polymorphisms of four genes associated with milk yield, ABCG2, DGAT1, GHRand PRLR, showed no statistically significant effect on tick burden but highly significant associations to milk component yield in these data and we confirmed separate effects for GHRand PRLRon bovine chromosome 20. To begin to identify some of the molecular genetic bases for these traits, we genotyped a sample of 189 of these cattle for 7397 single nucleotide polymorphisms in a genome-wide association study. Although the allele effects for adjusted milk fat and protein yield were highly correlated (r= 0.66), the correlations of allele effects of these milk component yields and tick burden were small (|r| ≤ 0.10). These results agree in general with the phenotypic correlations between tick counts and milk component yield and suggest that selection on markers for tick burden or milk component yield may have no undesirable effect on the other trait. The strong spin-spin exchange interaction in some low-dimensional magnetic materials can give rise to a high group velocity and thermal conductivity contribution from magnons. Examples are the incommensurate layered compounds (Sr,Ca,La)14Cu24O41. The effects of grain boundaries and defects on quasi-one-dimensional magnon transport in these compounds are not well understood. Here we report the microstructural and anisotropic thermal transport properties of textured Sr14Cu24O41, which is prepared by solid-state reaction followed by spark plasma sintering. Transmission electron microscopy clearly reveals nanolayered grains and the presence of dislocations and planar defects. The thermal conductivity contribution and mean free paths of magnons in the textured samples are evaluated with the use of a kinetic model for one-dimensional magnon transport and found to be suppressed significantly compared to single crystals at low temperatures. The experimental results can be explained by a one-dimensional magnon-defect scattering model, provided that the magnon-grain boundary scattering mean free path in the anisotropic magnetic structure is smaller than the average length of these nanolayers along the c axis.
