Size-segregated ambient particulate matter (PM) samples were collected seasonally in suburban Nanjing of east China from 2016 to 2017 and chemically speciated. In both fine (< 2.1 µm, PM 2.1) and coarse (> 2.1 µm, PM >2.1) PM, organic carbon (OC) accounted for the highest fractions (26.9% ± 10.9% and 23.1% ± 9.35%) of all measured species, and NO 3 − lead in average concentrations of water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs). The size distributions of measured components were parameterized using geometric mean diameter (GMD). GMD values of NO 3 −, Cl−, OC, and PM for the whole size range varied from < 2.1 µm in winter to > 2.1 μm in warm seasons, which was due to the fact that the size distributions of semi-volatile components (e.g., NH 4 NO 3 , NH 4 Cl, and OC) had a dependency on the ambient temperature. Unlike OC, elemental carbon (EC), and elements, NH 4 +, NO 3 −, and SO 4 2− exhibited an increase trend in GMD values with relative humidity, indicating that the hygroscopic growth might also play a role in driving seasonal changes of PM size distributions. Positive matrix factorization was performed using compositional data of fine and coarse particles, respectively. The secondary formation of inorganic salts contributing to the majority (> 70%) of fine PM and 20.2% ± 19.9% of speciated coarse PM. The remaining coarse PM content was attributed to a variety of dust sources. Adhesively bonded CFRP/Al joints have been widely used in various engineering fields. However, the poor interface adhesion between the adhesive and the Al adherend limits its further use. In this study, ultrasonic vibration was applied to promote the interface adhesion, and the promotion mechanism was studied in detail. The vibration was exerted on the surface close to the bonding area after the adhesive was applied. According to the bonding strength test, this process improved the bonding strength and repeatability by approximately 32% and 48%, respectively. By comparing the failure behavior without and with ultrasound, it can be seen that ultrasound promotes interface adhesion of the adhesive/Al adherend significantly. Under the application of ultrasonic vibration, a tight microscopic bond was formed at the bonding interface, and a chemical reaction occurred to form chemical bonds. The opening of the epoxy group was promoted to allow Al to react with –O–C to form Al–O–C, because attack of electrophilic Al + on O– of the epoxy group was strengthened by high-frequency impact between the adhesive and the Al adherend at the interface caused by the ultrasonic vibration. It can be seen that the application of ultrasonic vibration during the adhesive bonding process can promote interface adhesion between Al and the adhesive in terms of physics and chemistry, thus significantly improving the performance of the adhesive bond. Abstract Pyroptosis is a novel programmed cell death form which is distinct from other types of cell death. As an inherently inflammatory process, it plays a vital role in cellular lysis and release of pro-inflammatory cytokines when hosts defend against infections. Recent studies have reported that pyroptosis was involved in liver diseases and had important functions in the progress and development of liver diseases. Here, we addressed the potential role of pyroptosis in liver diseases on the basis of brief introduction of the morphological characteristics, molecular and pathophysiological mechanisms of pyroptosis. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is infecting about 364 million people around the world. It can cause various diseases, such as chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the present anti-viral treatment in clinics is limited; studies for new therapies are highly desired. Autophagy is a crucial and major catabolic process in the maintenance of normal intracellular homeostasis in host cells. Host cells use this unique process to degrade and recycle long-lived proteins, damaged organelles, and various pathogens for keeping the normal physiological functions. Recently, published studies indicated that HBV can induce autophagy in host cells; this autophagic response is involved in viral replication and pathogenesis. Several viral proteins, such as surface and X proteins, are assumed to be responsible for inducing autophagy in HBV infection. This review briefly summarizes some important mechanisms involved in HBV-induced autophagy and provides a novel perspective on therapies of HBV infection and HBV-related HCC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Acetaminophen (APAP) overdose can cause severe liver injury and APAP-induced liver injury (AILI) is one of the leading causes of acute liver failure (ALF). Bruton's tyrosine kinase (BTK) is a key tyrosine kinase in immune responses, which plays an important role in many inflammatory diseases. However, its effect on AILI is still not clear. Here, we aimed to assess the effect of BTK on AILI and explore its underlying mechanism. In our study, western blot and immunohistochemistry were used to detect the expression of BTK in AILI. The C57BL/6 mice were used to check the protective effect of BTK inhibition on AILI and the activation of BTK was confirmed in mice macrophages treated with APAP. Immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, oxygen consumption rate (OCR) detection, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), flow cytometry and western blot were used to determine the role of BTK in mitochondrial dynamics and function of macrophages and the underlying mechanisms in AILI. Our results showed that BTK upregulated in AILI. BTK inhibition protected mice from AILI and BTK was activated in mice macrophages in response to APAP. Mechanically, BTK inhibition promoted mitochondrial fusion and restored mitochondrial function through phospholipase C gamma 2 (PLCγ2)-reactive oxygen species (ROS)-Optic Atrophy 1(OPA1) pathway in macrophages and finally suppressed the release of proinflammatory cytokines. In conclusion, we found that BTK inhibition protected mice from AILI by restoring the mitochondrial function of macrophages through the improvement of the mitochondrial dynamic imbalance via PLCγ2-ROS-OPA1 signaling pathway, which indicated that BTK might be a potential therapeutic target of AILI. To quantify and minimize the influence of gas/particle (G/P) partitioning on receptor-based source apportionment using particle-phase semivolatile organic compound (SVOC) data, positive matrix factorization (PMF) coupled with a bootstrap technique was applied to three data sets mainly composed of "measured-total" (measured ? particle- + gas-phase), "particle-only" (measured particle-phase) and "predicted-total" J (measured particle-phase + predicted gas-phase) SVOC5 to apportion carbonaceous J aerosols. Particle-(PM25) and gas-phase SVOC5 were collected using quartz fiber filters followed by PUF/XAD-4/PUF adsorbents and measured using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Concentrations of gas-phase SVOC5 were also predicted " from their particle-phase concentrations using absorptive partitioning theory. Five factors were resolved for each data set, and the factor profiles were generally consistent across the three PMF solutions. Using a previous source apportionment study at the same receptor site, those five factors were linked to summertime biogenic emissions (odd n-alkane factor), unbumed fossil fuels (light SVOC factor), road dust and/or cooking (n-alkane factor), motor vehicle emissions (PAH factor), and lubricating oil combustion (sterane factor). The "measured-total" solution was least influenced by G/P partitioning and used as reference. Two out of the five factors (odd n-alkane and PAH factors) exhibited consistent contributions for "particle-only" vs "measured-total" and " "predicted-total" vs "measured-total" solutions. Factor contributions of light SVOC and n-alkane factors were more consistent for "predicted-total" vs "measured-total" than "particle-only" vs "measured-total" solutions. The remaining factor (sterane factor) underestimated the contribution by around 50% from both "particle-only" and "predicted-total" solutions. The results of this study confirm that when measured gas-phase SVOCs are not available, "predicted-total" SVOCs should be used to decrease the influence of G/P partitioning on receptorbased source apportionment. Abstract: This study presents source apportionment results for PM2.5 from applying positive matrix factorization (PMF) to a 32-month series of daily PM2.5 compositional data from Denver, CO, including concentrations of sulfate, nitrate, bulk elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC), and 51 organic molecular markers (OMMs). An optimum 8-factor solution was determined primarily based on the interpretability of the PMF results and rate of matching factors from bootstrapped PMF solutions with those from the base case solution. These eight factors were identified as inorganic ion, n-alkane, EC/sterane, light n-alkane/polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), medium alkane/alkanoic acid, PAH, winter/methoxyphenol and summer/odd n-alkane. The inorganic ion factor dominated the reconstructed PM2.5 mass (sulfate + nitrate + EC + OC) in cold periods (daily average temperature <10 °C; 43.7% of reconstructed PM2.5 mass) whereas the summer/odd n-alkane factor dominated in hot periods (>20 °C; 53.1%). The two factors had comparable relative contributions of 26.5% and 27.1% in warm periods with temperatures between 10 °C and 20 °C. Each of the seven factors resolved in a previous study (Dutton et al., 2010b) using a 1-year data set from the same location matches one factor from the current work based on comparing factor profiles. Six out of the seven matched pairs of factors are linked to similar source classes as suggested by the strong correlations between factor contributions (r = 0.89–0.98). Temperature-stratified source apportionment was conducted for three subsets of the data in the current study, corresponding to the cold, warm and hot periods mentioned above. The cold period (7-factor) solution exhibited a similar distribution of reconstructed PM2.5 mass as the full data set solution. The factor contributions of the warm period (7-factor) solution were well correlated with those from the full data set solution (r = 0.76–0.99). However, the reconstructed PM2.5 mass was distributed more to inorganic ion, n-alkane and medium alkane/alkanoic acid factors in the warm period solution than in the full data set solution. For the hot period (6-factor) solution, PM2.5 mass distribution was quite different from that of the full data set solution, as illustrated by regression slopes as low as 0.2 and as high as 4.8 of each matched pair of factors across the two solutions. Abstract: The Denver Aerosol Sources and Health (DASH) study was designed to evaluate associations between PM2.5 species and sources and adverse human health effects. The DASH study generated a five-year (2003–2007) time series of daily speciated PM2.5 concentration measurements from a single, special-purpose monitoring site in Denver, CO. To evaluate the ability of this site to adequately represent the short term temporal variability of PM2.5 concentrations in the five county Denver metropolitan area, a one year supplemental set of PM2.5 samples was collected every sixth day at the original DASH monitoring site and concurrently at three additional sites. Two of the four sites, including the original DASH site, were located in residential areas at least 1.9 km from interstate highways. The other two sites were located within 0.3 km of interstate highways. Concentrations of elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC), and 58 organic molecular markers were measured at each site. To assess spatial variability, site pairs were compared using the Pearson correlation coefficient (r) and coefficient of divergence (COD), a statistic that provides information on the degree of uniformity between monitoring sites. Bi-weekly co-located samples collected from July 2004 to September 2005 were also analyzed and used to estimate the uncertainty associated with sampling and analytical measurement for each species. In general, the two near-highway sites exhibited higher concentrations of EC, OC, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and steranes than did the more residential sites. Lower spatial heterogeneity based on r and COD was inferred for all carbonaceous species after considering their divergence and lack of perfect correlations in co-located samples. Ratio–ratio plots combined with available gasoline- and diesel-powered motor vehicle emissions profiles for the region suggested a greater impact to high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs from diesel-powered vehicles at the near-highway sites and a more uniformly distributed impact to ambient hopanes from gasoline-powered motor vehicles at all four sites. Abstract: To identify the sources of PM2.5 – bound carbonaceous species and examine the spatial variability of source contributions in the Denver metropolitan area, positive matrix factorization (PMF) was applied to one year of every sixth day ambient PM2.5 compositional data, including elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC), and 32 organic molecular markers, from four sites (two residential and two near-traffic). Statistics (median, inner quantiles and 5th – 95th percentiles range) of factor contributions, expressed as reconstructed carbonaceous mass (EC + OC), were estimated from PMF solutions of replicate datasets generated by using a stationary block bootstrap technique. A seven-factor solution was resolved for a set of data pooled across the four sites, as it gave the most interpretable results and had the highest rate of neural network factor matching (76.9%). Identified factors were primarily associated with high plant wax, summertime emission, diesel vehicle emission, fossil fuel combustion, motor vehicle emission, lubricating oil combustion and wood burning. Pearson correlation coefficients (r) and coefficients of divergence (COD) were used to assess spatial variability of factor contributions. The summertime emission factor exhibited the highest spatial correlation (r = 0.74 – 0.88) and lowest CODs (0.32 – 0.38) among all resolved factors; while the three traffic dominated factors (diesel vehicle emission, motor vehicle emission and lubricating oil combustion) showed lower correlations (r = 0.47 – 0.55) and higher CODs (0.41 – 0.53) on average. Average total EC and OC mass were apportioned to each factor and showed a similar distribution across the four sites. Modeling uncertainties were defined as the 5th – 95th percentile range of the factor contributions derived from valid bootstrap PMF solutions, and were highly correlated with the median factor contribution in each factor (r = 0.77 – 0.98). Source apportionment was also performed on site specific datasets; the results exhibited similar factor profiles and temporal variation in factor contribution as those obtained for the pooled dataset, indicating that the four sites are primarily influenced by similar types of sources. On the other hand, differences were observed in absolute factor contributions between PMF solutions for the pooled versus site-specific datasets, likely due to the large uncertainties in EC and OC factor profiles derived from the site specific datasets with limited numbers of observations. Abstract: Polar organic compounds and elements were quantified in PM10 aerosols collected in urban and rural areas of Baoji, an inland city of China, during winter and spring 2008. Concentrations of biomass burning markers and high molecular weight n-alkanoic acids (HMW, >C22:0) were heavily increased in winter. In contrast, sugars presented in higher levels in the spring, among which sucrose was the most abundant with an average of 219ngm−3 in winter and 473ngm−3 in spring respectively. This suggests enhanced biotic activity in the warm season, whereas no obvious trend was observed for sugar alcohols, concentrations of the three sugar alcohols in spring were only 0.94–2.3 times as those in winter, indicating a second pathway of their formation other than fungal spores in cold season. Major crustal elements (i.e., Fe, K, Mn and Ti) in PM10 aerosols were also observed in larger concentrations in spring samples than those in winter due to an enhancement of coarse particles from soil minerals. By using principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF), sources and their contributions to the PM components were also investigated in this study. Four factors were extracted with both models, and the sources represented by different factors were based on the highest loaded marker species as follows: factor 1, soil and road dust (Fe, Sr and Ti); factor 2, biomass burning (levoglucosan, galactosan and syringic acid); factor 3, microbial emissions (fructose and sucrose); and factor 4, fossil fuel combustion and fungal spores influence (Pb, Zn, arabitol and mannitol). The high correlation between PM10 and factor 1 suggested that PM10 pollution in Baoji was dominated by soil and dust re-suspension. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Normal alkanes and PAHs in atmospheric PM10 aerosols collected during 2008 winter and spring in Baoji, a mid-scale inland city of China, were determined on a molecular level. Concentrations of n-alkanes ranged from 232 to 3583 ng/m3 with an average of 1733 ng/m3 in winter and from 124 to 1160 ng/m3 with an average of 449 ng/m3 in spring, while PAHs in the PM10 samples were 594±405 and 128±82 ng/m3 in the two seasons. Molecular compositions showed that CPI (odd/even) values of n-alkanes were close to unity for all the samples especially in winter, and diagnostic ratios of PAHs (e.g., Phe/(Phe+Ant), CPAH/ΣPAHs and IcdP/(IcdP+BghiP)) were found similar to those in coal burning smoke with a strong linear relationship (R 2 ≥0.85) between PAHs and fossil fuel derived n-alkanes, demonstrating that coal burning is the main source of n-alkanes and PAHs in the city, especially in winter due to house heating. Concentrations of the determined compounds in Baoji are much higher than those in Chinese mega-cities, suggesting that air pollution in small cities in the country is more serious and need more attention. Background: Mean perfusion pressure (MPP) has recently emerged as a potential biomarker for personalized management of tissue perfusion in critically ill patients. However, its association with the occurrence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in septic patients and the optimal MPP range remain uncertain. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the relationship between MPP and AKI in critically ill patients with sepsis. Methods: We identified 5867 patients with sepsis from the MIMIC-IV database who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The exposure variable was the first set of MPP measured within 24 h after ICU admission with invasive hemodynamic monitoring. The primary outcome was the incidence of AKI at 7 days following ICU admission according to the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) guidelines. Secondary outcomes included in-hospital mortality, lengths of ICU, and hospital stay. Optimal cut-off point for MPP were determined using the Youden index, and multivariable logistic regression was employed to examine the association between MPP and AKI. Subgroup analyses were conducted to enhance result robustness. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was utilized to evaluate in-hospital mortality rates categorized by MPP. Results: A total of 5,867 patients with sepsis were included in this study, and the overall incidence of AKI was 82.3%(4828/5867). Patients were categorized into low MPP (< 63 mmHg) and high MPP (≥ 63 mmHg) groups using the optimal ROC curve-derived cut-off point. The incidence of AKI in the low MPP group was higher than that in the high MPP group (87.6% vs. 78.3%, P < 0.001). Multivariable logistic regression analysis adjusted for confounding factors revealed that each 1 mmHg increase in MPP as a continuous variable was associated with a 2% decrease in AKI incidence within 7 days of ICU admission (OR:0.98, 95%CI:0.97–0.99, P < 0.001). When MPP was used as a categorical variable, patients in the high MPP group had a lower risk of AKI than those in the low MPP group (OR:0.71, 95%CI:0.61–0.83, P = 0.001). Subgroup analyses demonstrated a consistent association between MPP and AKI risk across all variables assessed (P for interaction all > 0.05). Kaplan-Meier curve analysis demonstrated a higher survival rate during hospitalization in the high MPP group compared to the low MPP group (Log-rank test, P < 0.0001). Purpose: The number of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) is gradually increasing worldwide, and those located in the small intestine (siNETs) are the most common. As some biological and clinical characteristics of tumors of the jejunum and the ileum differ, there is a need to assess the prognosis of individuals with siNETs of the jejunum and ileum separately. We generated a predictive nomogram by assessing individuals with siNETs from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Methods: We used univariate Cox regression analysis to determine both the overall survival (OS) and the cancer-specific survival (CSS) of 2501 patients with a pathological confirmation of siNETs of the jejunum and ileum. To predict 3-, 5-, and 10-year OS of siNETs, a nomogram was generated based on a training cohort and validated with an external cohort. Accuracy and clinical practicability were evaluated separately by Harrell's C-indices, calibration plots, and decision curves. The correlation was examined between dissected lymph nodes and positive lymph nodes. Results: Dissection of 7 or more lymph nodes significantly improved patient OS and was found to be a protective factor for patients with siNETs. In Cox regression analyses, age, primary site, tumor size, N stage, M stage, and regional lymph node examination were significant predictors in the nomogram. A significant positive correlation was found between dissected lymph nodes and positive lymph nodes. Conclusions: Patients with 7 or more dissected lymph nodes showed an accurate tumor stage and a better prognosis. Our nomogram accurately predicted the OS of patients with siNETs. Acetaminophen (APAP) is a widely applied drug for the alleviation of pain and fever, which is also a dose‐depedent toxin. APAP‐induced acute liver injury has become one of the primary causes of liver failure which is an increasingly serious threat to human health. Neutrophils are the major immune cells in human serving as the first barrier against the invasion of pathogen. It has been reported that neutrophils patriciate in the occurrence and development of APAP‐induced liver injury. However, evolving evidences suggest that neutrophils also contribute to tissue repair and actively orchestrate resolution of inflammation. Background: In previous studies, a TiO2 coating was prepared on Ti surface through micro‐arc oxidation (MAO) by using calcium acetate as electrolyte, and the effects of the coating on cell attachment were testified. The main elemental compositions of the MAO coatings can be Ca, P, Ti and O. The Ca and P can promote the adhesion and differentiation of osteoblast. Dandelion polysaccharide is one kind of the active constituent of Taraxacum mongolicum, a Chinese medicinal herb, widespreading in nature. Aim/Hypothesis:This study aimed to investigate the effects of the MAO coating on mesenchymal stem cells while loading with dandelion polysaccharide. Material and Methods: (i) The schistose‐shaped Ti (_I_n_i_ = 15) were supplied. MAO treatment was performed on the machined implants by a MAO equipment. Furthermore, the MAO coating has been loading with 2.0 mg/L dandelion polysaccharide solution. A pure Ti and MAO coating that has been served as control (_I_n_i_ = 15, pure Ti surface = 5, MAO coating surface = 5, MAO coating loading with dandelion polysaccharide). (ii) Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the Ti surface morphology. The elemental concentrations of the surfaces were quantified by energy dispersive X‐ray spectrometer. The phase composition was analyzed by X‐ray diffraction (iii) BMSCs were seeded on the surface of different groups and cultured. Then CCK‐8 kit was used to detect the adhesion and proliferation at selected time points. (iv) SPSS 20.0 software was used for statistical analysis. Results: (i) The coating with regular microstructure (diameter 1.0–6.0 mm) was prepared by micro‐arc oxidation on titanium substrates. (Fig.1) (ii) At 2 and 4 hours, the number of BMSCs of MAO group and MAO load group are more than Ti group and the difference was statistically significant, but there was no significant difference between the two groups. (Fig.2) (iii) At 3 days, the number of BMSCs of MAO load group are more than Ti group and MAO group, and the difference was statistically significant, while at 5 days and 7 days, there was no significant difference between MAO group and MAO load group. (Fig.3) Conclusions and Clinical Implications:Micro arc oxidation method was used to successfully product a coating rich in calcium and phosphorus elements and loaded with dandelion polysaccharide. (ii) The experiment in vitro showed that dandelion polysaccharide may promote proliferation of BMSCs on the surface of MAO coatings while cannot promote the adhesion.

Air pollution in the developed regions of eastern China has been intensively investigated in the past decade. However, there is a relative dearth of air pollution studies on the northwest of inland China (e.g., Xinjiang). In this work, hourly measurement data of six criteria air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, CO, NO2, O3, and SO2) for the past five years (2018–2022) from Hami and Turpan cities of eastern Xinjiang were analyzed to reveal air pollution characteristics and the distribution of potential sources. Hami and Turpan had the highest AQI values in winter due to increased coal combustion for domestic heating and unfavorable meteorological conditions. The slight elevations of AQI values in spring were caused by frequent dust storms. PM10 was the most frequent main pollutant in both Hami (63.1%) and Turpan (74.1%), followed by PM2.5 and O3. Except for O3, PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, and CO exhibited a generally decreasing pattern in annual average values. But the annual average concentrations of PM10 in Hami (83.5 μg·m−3) and Turpan (139 μg·m−3) in 2022 were still higher than those in eastern China. Diurnal and monthly variations of the six criteria pollutants were influenced by a combination of emission sources and meteorological conditions. The air masses in eastern Xinjiang mainly originated from the west and north and were affected by both inter-regional and intra-regional transport. Analysis of the distribution of potential sources showed that local emissions strongly impacted particulate matter pollution in winter, while regional transport played a dominant role in other seasons. O3 showed a broad distribution of potential sources across all four seasons. Considering that the trend that O3 pollution increased year by year, eastern Xinjiang might face a similar pollution situation as eastern China, i.e., the combined pollution of particulate matter and O3. Atmospheric aerosols have been shown to be an important input of organic carbon and nutrients to alpine watersheds and influence biogeochemical processes in these remote settings. For many remote, high elevation watersheds, direct evidence of the sources of water soluble organic aerosols and their chemical and optical characteristics is lacking. Here, we show that the concentration of water soluble organic carbon (WSOC) in the total suspended particulate (TSP) load at a high elevation site in the Colorado Rocky Mountains was strongly correlated with UV absorbance at 254 nm (Abs254, r = 0.88 p < 0.01) and organic carbon (OC, r = 0.95 p < 0.01), accounting for >90% of OC on average. According to source apportionment analysis, biomass burning had the highest contribution (50.3%) to average WSOC concentration; SOA formation and motor vehicle emissions dominated the contribution to WSOC in the summer. The source apportionment and backward trajectory analysis results supported the notion that both wildfire and Colorado Front Range pollution sources contribute to the summertime OC peaks observed in wet deposition at high elevation sites in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Abstract: The Colorado Coarse Rural–Urban Sources and Health (CCRUSH) study is a multi-year study focused on characterizing the mass, composition and sources of coarse particulate matter (PM10−2.5) in Denver and Greeley, CO. Between the two cities, Denver is expected to have greater influence of industry and motor vehicles as sources of PM10–2.5. Greeley is a smaller city with greater expected influence of agricultural activity. As part of the CCRUSH study, we collected integrated 24-h samples of PM from four sites in Denver and Greeley at six day intervals from February 2010 to March 2011. Dichotomous samplers with Teflon filters were used to obtain samples for gravimetric and elemental analysis. Magnetic Sector Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectroscopy (SF-ICP-MS) was used to analyze digests of monthly composited filter samples for 49 elements. Thirty-nine elements were retained for statistical analysis after excluding those with low signal-to-noise ratios. The elements Sb, Cd, Zn, Mo, As, B, Cu, Pb, and W had crustal enrichment factors greater than 10 in the PM2.5 and PM10–2.5 size ranges in both Denver and Greeley. Using positive matrix factorization (PMF) with bootstrap uncertainty estimation, we identified five factors influencing the element concentrations: a crustal factor contributing to both PM2.5 and PM10–2.5; a sodium-dominated PM10–2.5 factor likely associated with road salt; a vehicle abrasion factor contributing in both size ranges; a regional sulfur factor contributing mainly to PM2.5 and likely associated with coal combustion; and a local catalyst factor identified with high Ce and La enrichment in PM2.5 at one of the sites in Denver. China is an important emitter of light-absorbing carbonaceous aerosols (LACs), including black carbon (BC) and brown carbon (BrC). Currently, there are large uncertainties in model-estimated direct radiative forcing (DRF) of LACs, partially due to the poor understanding of the emissions and optical properties of LACs. In this study, we estimated the DRF of LACs over China during the implementation of the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (APPCAP) using the global chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem) coupled with the Rapid Radiative Transfer Model of GCMs (RRTMG). We updated the refractive index of BC, includedbiomass burning (BB) sources, biofuel (BF) and coal combustion (CC) sources in the residential sector as BrC emission sources and the optical properties were updated, which were not fully considered in the previous model studies. Our results showed that model could reasonably capture the spatial and temporal variations of LACs in China with the correlation coefficients between model simulated and Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) observed daily absorption aerosol optical depth (AAOD) of LACs at 440 nm above 0.63 and the corresponding values of the normalized mean bias within ±30%. The simulated annual mean LACs AAOD at 440 nm in China was 0.016 (0.021) in 2017 (2014) and BrC contributed about 20% (21%). The estimated annual mean clear-sky LACs DRF at the top of the atmosphere in China was 1.02 W m−2 in 2017 and 1.38 W m−2 in 2014, and the contribution of BrC was about 10% and 11%, respectively, which was dominated by the BF sources (46% in 2017 and 44% in 2014) and the BB sources (38% in 2017 and 43% in 2014), with CC sources being low (16% in 2017 and 13% in 2014). The annual mean AAOD and DRF of LACs in China decreased by 0.005 and 0.36 W m−2 from 2014 to 2017, which were largely attributed to the reductions of anthropogenic emissions during the implementation of APPCAP. BSTRACT Primary (i.e. sugars and sugar-alcohols) and secondary (i.e. carboxylic acids) water-soluble organic compounds (WSOCs) in size-segregated aerosols from the urban and mountain atmosphere of China and from the marine atmosphere in the outflow region of East Asia were characterized on a molecular level. Levoglucosan is the most abundant compound among the quantified WSOCs in the urban and mountain atmosphere, whose concentration at the urban site was 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than that at the mountain and marine sites. In contrast, malic, succinic and phthalic acids were dominant among the measured WSOCs at the marine site. In the urban air, sugars except levoglucosan gave a bimodal size distribution with a large peak in fine range (<2.1 μm) and a small peak in coarse range (≥2.1 μm) during winter, being opposite to those in spring. In contrast, these WSOCs at the mountain and marine sites dominated in the coarse range but diminished and even disappeared in the fine range. Geometric mean diameters (GMDs) of the measured WSOCs in the fine mode at the urban site were larger in winter than in spring. Levoglucosan and carboxylic acids except for azelaic and benzoic acids showed a larger GMD in the coarse mode at the marine site probably due to an increased hygroscopic growth. • Metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) covers a battery of disease phenotypes. • The role of neutrophils in different stages of MAFLD are systematically reviewed. • The role of various of neutrophil components in MAFLD are expounded in detail. Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a common type of chronic liver disease characterized by excessive lipid accumulation in hepatocytes, but the pathogenesis is still unclear. Neutrophils, the most abundant immune cells in the human body, defend against pathogens and regulate the inflammatory response. Recent studies have indicated that excessive liver infiltration of neutrophils is a significant histological hallmark of MAFLD, and neutrophils and their derived granule proteins participate in different stages of MAFLD, including hepatic steatosis, inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Hence, in this review, we summarize the role of neutrophils in the occurrence and progression of MAFLD and provide a perspective for the clinical application of neutrophils in MAFLD diagnosis and treatment. The spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and consequent lockdowns all over the world have had various impacts on atmospheric quality. This study aimed to investigate the impact of the lockdown on the air quality of Nanjing, China. The off-axis measurements from state-of-the-art remote-sensing Multi-Axis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscope (MAX-DOAS) were used to observe the trace gases, i.e., Formaldehyde (HCHO), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), and Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), along with the in-situ time series of NO2, SO2 and Ozone (O3). The total dataset covers the span of five months, from 1 December 2019, to 10 May 2020, which comprises of four phases, i.e., the pre lockdown phase (1 December 2019, to 23 January 2020), Phase-1 lockdown (24 January 2020, to 26 February 2020), Phase-2 lockdown (27 February 2020, to 31 March 2020), and post lockdown (1 April 2020, to 10 May 2020). The observed results clearly showed that the concentrations of selected pollutants were lower along with improved air quality during the lockdown periods (Phase-1 and Phase-2) with only the exception of O3, which showed an increasing trend during lockdown. The study concluded that limited anthropogenic activities during the spring festival and lockdown phases improved air quality with a significant reduction of selected trace gases, i.e., NO2 59%, HCHO 38%, and SO2 33%. We also compared our results with 2019 data for available gases. Our results imply that the air pollutants concentration reduction in 2019 during Phase-2 was insignificant, which was due to the business as usual conditions after the Spring Festival (Phase-1) in 2019. In contrast, a significant contamination reduction was observed during Phase-2 in 2020 with the enforcement of a Level-II response in lockdown conditions i.e., the easing of the lockdown situation in some sectors during a specific interval of time. Ammonia control has received increasing attention as a measure to decrease particulate concentrations. Modeling analysis of observation data from central China over the period of September 2015 to August 2016 shows clear asymmetric responses of particulate pH and mass to ammonia emissions. With a change of ±80% of NHx (NH3 + NH4+), the corresponding ΔpH are +0.5 and −3.0, respectively, and the corresponding particulate NH4+ changes are +2.62% and −61.8%, respectively. This asymmetry implies that there is a Critical Total Ammonia Concentration, above which particulate pH and mass are insensitive to ammonia control. Analysis of the observation data suggests that the Critical Total Ammonia Concentration is −25%. The estimated cost for an NHx reduction of 25% is $140 – 320 million for Hubei province, which is the initial cost barrier before ammonia control can effectively affect particulate pH and mass in central China. This cost barrier will increase as NOx and SO2 emissions decrease. Hepatocellular carcinoma remains the sixth most lethal malignancy in the world. While HCC is often diagnosed via current biomarkers at a late stage, early detection of HCC has proven to be very difficult. Recent studies have focused on using exosomal miRNAs in clinical diagnostics and therapeutics, because they have improved stability in exosomes than as free miRNAs themselves. Exosomal miRNAs act through novel mechanisms for inducing cellular responses in a variety of biological circumstances. Dysregulated expression of miRNAs in exosomes can also accelerate HCC progression, including cell proliferation and metastasis, via alteration of a network of genes. Growing evidence demonstrates that exosomal miRNAs can affect many aspects of physiological and pathological conditions in HCC and indicates that miRNAs in exosomes can not only serve as sensitive biomarkers for cancer diagnostics and recurrence but can also potentially be used as therapeutics to target HCC progression. In this review, we summarize the latest findings between exosomal miRNAs and HCC, in order to better comprehend the functions and applications in HCC. Bacterial multidrug resistance efflux systems serve an important role in antimicrobial resistance. Thus, identifying novel and effective efflux pump inhibitors that are safe with no adverse side effects is urgently required. Silybin is a flavonolignan component of the extract from the milk thistle seed. To order to investigate the mechanism by which silybin inhibits the efflux system of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), antimicrobial susceptibility testing and the double-plate method were used to evaluate the effect of silybin on MRSA41577. The ability of silybin to inhibit the efflux of ciprofloxacin from MRSA was evaluated by performing a fluorescence assay. Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed that silybin reduced the expression of the quinolone resistance protein NorA (norA) and quaternary ammonium resistance proteins A/B (qacA/B) efflux genes in MRSA. This suggested that silybin may effectively inhibit the efflux system of MRSA41577. Compared with the control, MRSA41577 treated with silybin for 16 h exhibited a 36 and 49% reduction in the expression of norA and qacA/B, respectively. Inhibition of the expression of these genes by silybin restored the sensitivity of MRSA41577 to antibiotics, indicating that efflux pump inhibitors, which act by inhibiting the efflux system of MRSA, may disrupt the MRSA resistance to antibiotics, rendering the bacteria sensitive to these drugs. REACCTING (Research on Emissions Air Quality, Climate, and Cooking Technologies in Northern Ghana) was a 200-home cookstove intervention study from 2013 to 2015. Study households were divided into four groups: a control group, a group given two locally made rocket stoves, a group given two Philips forced draft stoves, and a group given a locally made rocket stove and a Philips stove. In a subset of study households, 48-hour PM 2.5 exposure samples were collected for adults and children, as well as in the primary cooking area. Further, weekly ambient background PM 2.5 samples were collected for the first nine months of the study. All PM 2.5 samples were analyzed for elemental and organic carbon (EC/OC), and a subset was also analyzed for organics. Mixed effects modeling was applied to quantify differences in PM exposures between the groups and to assess relationships between exposures and cooking area measurements. Results showed that personal OC exposure for the intervention groups was 56.6% lower than the control group ( p ≤ 0.01). Both intervention groups given Philips stoves had significantly lower EC exposure than the control group (60.6% reduction, p ≤ 0.02). Only weak relationships were found between personal and cooking area EC or OC. Source apportionment modeling was performed on both the personal/microenvironment and the ambient organics PM 2.5 data sets to assess the sources of the observed PM. We identified six PM sources. The identified source factors were similar among the data sets, as well as with previous work in Navrongo. Two sources, one characterized by the presence of methoxyphenols, and one by the presence of polyaromatic hydrocarbons and EC, were associated with biomass burning, and accounted for a median of 9.2% of OC and 15.3% of EC personal exposure. Here, we demonstrate the utility of using the cooking-related source apportionment factors within a mixed effects model for more precise estimation of exposures due to cooking, rather than other combustion sources unrelated to the intervention. Abstract: Molecular compositions and size distributions of water-soluble organic compounds (WSOC, i.e., sugars, sugar-alcohols and carboxylic acids) in particles from urban air of Nanjing, China during a severe haze event caused by field burning of wheat straw were characterized and compared with those in the summer and autumn non-haze periods. During the haze event levoglucosan (4030 ng m−3) was the most abundant compound among the measured WSOC, followed by succinic acid, malic acid, glycerol, arabitol and glucose, being different from those in the non-haze samples, in which sucrose or azelaic acid showed a second highest concentration, although levoglucosan was the highest. The measured WSOC in the haze event were 2–20 times more than those in the non-hazy days. Size distribution results showed that there was no significant change in the compound peaks in coarse mode (>2.1 μm) with respect to the haze and non-haze samples, but a large difference in the fine fraction (<2.1 μm) was found with a sharp increase during the hazy days mostly due to the increased emissions of wheat straw burning. Molecular compositions of organic compounds in the fresh smoke particles from wheat straw burning demonstrate that sharply increased concentrations of glycerol and succinic and malic acids in the fine particles during the haze event were mainly derived from the field burning of wheat straw, although the sources of glucose and related sugar-alcohols whose concentrations significantly increased in the fine haze samples are unclear. Compared to that in the fresh smoke particles of wheat straw burning an increase in relative abundance of succinic acid to levoglucosan during the haze event suggests a significant production of secondary organic aerosols during transport of the smoke plumes. Abstract: Foliar uptake of airborne lead is one of the pathways for Pb accumulation in plant organs. However, the approximate contributions of airborne Pb to plant organs are still unclear. In the present study, aerosols (nine-stage size-segregated aerosols and total suspended particulates), a wild plant species (Aster subulatus) and the corresponding soils were collected and Pb contents and isotopic ratios in these samples were analyzed. Average concentration of Pb was 96.5±63.5ngm−3 in total suspended particulates (TSP) and 20.4±5.5ngm−3 in the fine fractions of size-segregated aerosols (SSA) (<2.1μm), higher than that in the coarser fractions (>2.1μm) (6.38±3.71ngm−3). Enrichment factors show that aerosols and soils suffered from anthropogenic inputs and the fine fractions of the size-segregated aerosols enriched more Pb than the coarse fractions. The order of Pb contents in A. subulatus was roots>leaves>stems. The linear relationship of Pb isotope ratios (206Pb/207Pb and 208Pb/206Pb) among soil, plant and aerosol samples were found. Based on the simple binary Pb isotopic model using the mean 206Pb/207Pb ratios in TSP and in SSA, the approximate contributions of airborne Pb into plant leaves were 72.2% and 65.1%, respectively, suggesting that airborne Pb is the most important source for the Pb accumulation in leaves. So the combination of Pb isotope tracing and the simple binary Pb isotope model can assess the contribution of airborne Pb into plant leaves and may be of interest for risk assessment of the exposure to airborne Pb contamination. Recently, the occurrence of fog and haze over China has increased. The retrieval of trace gases from the multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) is challenging under these conditions. In this study, various reported retrieval settings for formaldehyde (HCHO) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) are compared to evaluate the performance of these settings under different meteorological conditions (clear day, haze, and fog). The dataset from 1st December 2019 to 31st March 2020 over Nanjing, China, is used in this study. The results indicated that for HCHO, the optimal settings were in the 324.5–359 nm wavelength window with a polynomial order of five. At these settings, the fitting and root mean squared (RMS) errors for column density were considerably improved for haze and fog conditions, and the differential slant column densities (DSCDs) showed more accurate values compared to the DSCDs between 336.5 and 359 nm. For SO2, the optimal settings for retrieval were found to be at 307–328 nm with a polynomial order of five. Here, root mean square (RMS) and fitting errors were significantly lower under all conditions. The observed HCHO and SO2 vertical column densities were significantly lower on fog days compared to clear days, reflecting a decreased chemical production of HCHO and aqueous phase oxidation of SO2 in fog droplets. The emergence of the novel corona virus and the resulting lockdowns over various parts of the world have substantially impacted air quality due to reduced anthropogenic activity. The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of COVID-19 lockdown and Spring Festival on air quality of four major cities of Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region, including Shanghai, Nanjing, Hefei, and Hangzhou. In situ measurements were taken for nitrogen dioxide (NO2), particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3). In situ measurements from 1 January to 25 April were taken two years prior to COVID-19 (2018–19), during COVID-19 lockdown (2020), and one year after the COVID-19 (2021). The results indicated that the concentration of NO2 and PM2.5 dropped considerably during the lockdown days compared to normal days while the O3 concentration showed an upsurge. The NO2 showed reduction of about 54% on average during lockdown level 1 in 2020 whereas, PM 2.5 showed reduction of about 36% through the YRD. In this study, collocated samples of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm (PM 2.5) were collected every sixth day on quartz filters (Q f) at a suburban site in northern Nanjing, China for one year. A backup quartz filter (Q b) was installed behind Q f to estimate positive artifacts. The analysis of gravimetric mass, water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs), total organic (OC) and elemental carbon (EC), water-soluble OC (WSOC), total nitrogen (WSTN) and organic nitrogen (WSON) were performed on both Q f and Q b. Due to the high mass loadings on Q f (17.9 ± 7.82 mg filter−1, 4.71–38.5 mg filter−1), the collocated precision of gravimetric mass and dominant species (NH 4 +, NO 3 −, SO 4 2−, OC, and EC) is better than that from previous work. Except K+, EC, and WSON, all other target components were detected on Q b with average Q b /Q f ratios ranging from 3.02 ± 3.48–21.7 ± 22.4%. The final concentrations and uncertainties of PM 2.5 components were determined based on duplicate Q f –Q b data. The results suggest that using an error fraction of 10% will underestimate the uncertainty of less concentrated species (e.g., Ca2+ and Mg2+) in PM 2.5. Due to the evaporation loss of semi-volatile materials from the Q f , the Q f –Q b calculation would lead to an estimate of the lower limit for particulate NH 4 +, NO 3 −, and OC. Synchronized hourly data of PM 2.5 mass and components were obtained at downtown Nanjing. The comparisons of gravimetric versus reconstructed PM 2.5 and filter-based versus continuous measurements of PM 2.5 components indicate that a substantial fraction of the unexplained gravimetric PM 2.5 can be attributed to aerosol water. In this study, hourly concentrations of PM 2.5 water-soluble inorganic ions, bulk organic carbon (OC), and elemental carbon (EC) were monitored from 1/1/2017 to 12/31/2017 and validated using filter-based offline analysis at an urban site in Nanjing, China. Compared with 2013 or before, the annual average of PM 2.5 concentration (36.5 ± 32.9 μg m−3) in 2017 decreased by more than 40%, NO 3 − (12.8 ± 11.4 μg m−3) became the most abundant water-soluble ion instead of SO 4 2− (9.29 ± 6.07 μg m−3), and the relative contribution of OC (5.92 ± 3.40 μg m−3) and EC (2.95 ± 1.53 μg m−3) to bulk PM 2.5 (24.9 ± 9.31%) increased substantially, indicating the effectiveness of the control policy for reducing gaseous precursor emissions. Based on the diurnal variations of water-soluble ions and gaseous pollutants, NH 4 +, SO 4 2−, and NO 3 − were secondarily formed and NH 4 NO 3 dominated the composition of ammonium salts in PM 2.5. The diurnal changes of OC, EC, and OC/EC ratios reflected prominent influences from local traffic patterns. Positive matrix factorization was performed using hourly data of PM 2.5 components (PMF 1-h), of which the results were justified by comparing to those using 23-h averaged data (PMF 23-h). Given that the secondary ion formation was still the dominant source (68.2%) of PM 2.5 , and the average PM 2.5 concentration in urban Nanjing remained higher than Tier II limit (35 μg m−3) of the Chinese National Ambient Air Quality Standard, controlling emissions of PM 2.5 precursor gases should be continued after the completion of Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan in 2017. The influence of atmosphere pollution on human health is receiving more and more concerns as strengthened anthropogenic activity had brought excessive pollutant into the atmosphere. To date, the quantitative estimation about the contribution of atmosphere on the accumulation of heavy metal in the edible cereal parts induced by anthropogenic forcing is scarce. Taking the Yangtze River Delta area, China as an example, this study estimates quantitatively the influence of atmosphere on the concentration of heavy metal in the aboveground wheat tissues induced by anthropogenic industrial activity at the regional scale. The results show that the aboveground wheat tissues in the southern Yangtze River Delta area accumulated much more heavy metals than that in the northern area, although there is no significant difference in the geological and climate conditions, soil types, agricultural manages, wheat cultivar and soil heavy metals concentrations (even heavy metals concentrations in wheat root) between the southern area and northern area. The mean concentrations of Pb, Zn, Cu and Cd in wheat grain in southern area have exceeded the thresholds of contamination levels. The present study suggests that the influence of atmosphere on the accumulation of Hg, Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni and Cr in the aboveground wheat tissues is greatly significant when high amounts of pollutant are measured in the atmosphere. Based on translocation coefficient of the element, it is estimated that atmospheric pollution induced by anthropogenic forcing might lead to the concentration of heavy metals in wheat straw and grain increase by approximately 100% and 354% (Hg), 64% and 293% (Pb), 122% and 160% (Cr), 50% and 38% (Cd) and 14% and 41% (Cu), respectively. • Contribution of atmosphere on heavy metal in wheat is estimated quantitatively. • Excessive heavy metal in wheat was found in south of Yangtze River Delta, China. • Anthropogenic air pollution greatly enhances heavy metal accumulation in wheat. • Anthropogenic forcing can increase Hg concentration in wheat grain by about 3 times.
