HCl gas gettering is a cheap and simple technique to reduce transition metal concentrations in silicon. It is attractive especially for low-cost silicon materials like upgraded metallurgical grade (UMG) silicon, which usually contain 3d transition metals in high concentrations. Etching of silicon by HCl gas occurs during HCl gas gettering above a certain onset temperature. The etching rate as well as the gettering efficiency was experimentally determined as a function of the gettering temperature, using UMG silicon wafers. The activation energy of the etching reaction by HCl gas was calculated from the obtained data. The gettering efficiency was determined by analyzing Ni as a representative of the 3d transition metals in the wafers with and without applied HCl gas gettering. For the optimization of the manufacturing process of multicrystalline silicon (mc-Si) for solar cells in order to reduce energy consumption and costs, it is important to know the distribution of the impurities. In our project, we analyzed the raw materials, the crucibles, and the solidified blocks (ingots) with different methods based on neutron activation. In this paper, we present the technique and the results of the boron and hydrogen determination with prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA). We show that the distribution of boron in the ingots can be successfully described with a Scheil curve. Concerning the raw material, the most relevant information is the average elemental mass fraction. For this purpose, PGAA is well suited since it provides a bulk analysis with detection limits down to the low ng/g range for boron and µg/g range for hydrogen. In this context, the hydrogen content of fluidized bed reactor (FBR) feedstock is discussed in detail. These were the first extensive PGAA studies of the boron and hydrogen content in mc-Si. A collaborative study to evaluate uptake of Cs as well as trace-, minor-, and main elements in morels ( Morchella esculenta) from various habitats in Germany was undertaken by the help of active mushroom collectors in Germany (). Cs determined by gamma spectrometry was found in all specimen and followed the expected post-Chernobyl distribution. To establish Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) for non-resectable liver metastases and for in vitro experiments at the TRIGA Mark II reactor at the University of Mainz, Germany, it is necessary to have a reliable dose monitoring system. The in vitro experiments are used to determine the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of liver and cancer cells in our mixed neutron and gamma field. We work with alanine detectors in combination with Monte Carlo simulations, where we can measure and characterize the dose. To verify our calculations we perform neutron flux measurements using gold foil activation and pin-diodes. Material and methods. When L-α-alanine is irradiated with ionizing radiation, it forms a stable radical which can be detected by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The value of the ESR signal correlates to the amount of absorbed dose. The dose for each pellet is calculated using FLUKA, a multipurpose Monte Carlo transport code. The pin-diode is augmented by a lithium fluoride foil. This foil converts the neutrons into alpha and tritium particles which are products of the 7Li(n,α)3H-reaction. These particles are detected by the diode and their amount correlates to the neutron fluence directly. Results and discussion. Gold foil activation and the pin-diode are reliable fluence measurement systems for the TRIGA reactor, Mainz. Alanine dosimetry of the photon field and charged particle field from secondary reactions can in principle be carried out in combination with MC-calculations for mixed radiation fields and the Hansen & Olsen alanine detector response model. With the acquired data about the background dose and charged particle spectrum, and with the acquired information of the neutron flux, we are capable of calculating the dose to the tissue. Conclusion. Monte Carlo simulation of the mixed neutron and gamma field of the TRIGA Mainz is possible in order to characterize the neutron behavior in the thermal column. Caibonyî complexes of radioactive transition metals can be easily synthesized with high yields by stopping nuclear fission or fiision products in a gas volume containing CO. Here, we focus on Mo, W, and Os complexes. The reaction takes place at pressures of around 1 bar at room temperature, i.e., at conditions that are easy to accommodate. Tlie formed complexes are highly volatile. They can thus be transported within a gas stream without major losses to setups for their further investigation or direct use. The rapid synthesis holds promise for radiochemical purposes and will be useful for studying, e.g., chemical properties of superheavy elements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
