Clinical Scenario: Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries in athletics, and many lead to recurrent sprains, chronic ankle instability, and persistent symptoms. Treatment improvements are needed. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) involves formulating autologous plasma with higher platelet concentration to be injected in the desired tissue. There is currently high-quality evidence supporting the use of PRP with lateral epicondylitis and knee osteoarthritis to accelerate the healing process and decrease pain. Clinical Question: Does the injection of PRP relieve pain faster and improve function compared with no injection or placebo in patients with a lateral ankle sprain? Summary of Key Findings: A computerized search yielded 191 studies; of these, 3 studies fit the inclusion and exclusion criteria. PRP injection reduces pain and increases function after lateral ankle sprain 5 to 8 weeks after intervention. Clinical Bottom Line: The use of PRP after lateral ankle sprain to decrease pain and increase function is supported with moderate evidence. Context: Foot/ankle pain is common among runners. Inadequate management of runners with foot/ankle pain can lead to lost training time, competition removal, and other activity limitations. Neurodynamics, which refers to the integrated biomechanical, physiological, and structural function of the nervous system during movement, can be overlooked in patients with foot/ankle pain. Although a link between the cervical spine, neurodynamics, and upper quarter pain has been studied, less is known about the relationship between the lumbar spine and lower quarter. This case series describes the successful management of 3 runners with foot/ankle pain. Case Presentations: Three female runners (ages 23, 24, and 45 y) presented to physical therapy with foot/ankle pain and difficulty running. Each patient had positive examination findings with local foot/ankle testing. A comprehensive lumbar spine examination demonstrated impairments in range of motion and joint mobility that were hypothesized to be contributing. Positive lower quarter neurodynamic tests were also found. Management and Outcomes: All patients were treated with nonthrust lumbar spine mobilization and lower quarter neural tissue mobilization. Changes in the Patient-Specific Functional Scale, Numerical Pain Rating Scale, Lower Extremity Functional Scale, and Global Rating of Change occurred after intervention targeting the lumbar spine and lower-extremity neurodynamics in all patients. Conclusions: This case series demonstrates the importance of including a thorough lumbar spine examination and neurodynamic testing to identify appropriate interventions while managing patients with foot/ankle pain, even when patients have signs indicative of local ankle/foot pathology. We estimate the superstar effects in Major League Baseball, focusing on a particularly unique international athlete, Shohei Ohtani, using a fixed effects panel regression with multiway clustering. Ohtani's scarce talent as both a pitcher and a hitter provides the potential to have outsized influence on demand at home (superstar effect) and away (superstar externality) games, providing new marketing opportunities for the league. We compare Ohtani's impact on attendance with other top pitchers, particularly after large attendance drops attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic, suggesting that his superstardom played a key role in bringing fans back to baseball games. Results revealed a large attendance externality, especially after the pandemic, that increased away attendance by up to 40% in 2021 specifically (and up to 20% overall). We propose that Ohtani provides an opportunity for Major League Baseball to leverage a recognizable face of baseball and leverage superstar value that was previously shown to be in decline. Thin-film confinement of self-assembling block polymers results in materials with myriad potential applications—including membranes and optical devices—and provides design parameters for altering phase behavior that are not available in the bulk, namely, film thickness and preferential wetting. However, most research has been limited to lamella- and cylinder-forming polymers; three-dimensional phases, such as double gyroid (DG), have been observed in thin films, but their phase behavior under confinement is not yet well understood. We use self-consistent field theory to predict the equilibrium morphology of bulk-gyroid-forming AB diblock polymers under thin-film confinement. Phase diagrams reveal that the (211) orientation of DG, often observed in experiments, is stable between nonpreferential boundaries at thicknesses as small as 1.2 times the bulk DG lattice parameter. The (001) orientation is stable between modestly B-preferential boundaries, where B is the majority block, while a different (211)-oriented termination plane is stabilized by strongly B-preferential boundaries, neither of which has been observed experimentally. We then describe two particularly important phenomena for explaining the phase behavior of DG thin films at low film thicknesses. The first is "constructive interference," which arises when distortions due to the top and bottom boundaries overlap and is significant for certain DG orientations. The second is a symmetry-dependent, in-plane unit-cell distortion that arises because the distorted morphology near the boundary has a different preferred unit-cell size and shape than the bulk. GPU-accelerated on-the-fly nonadiabatic dynamics is enabled by interfacing the linearized semiclassical dynamics approach with the TeraChem electronic structure program. We describe the computational workflow of the "PySCES" code interface, a Python code for semiclassical dynamics with on-the-fly electronic structure, including parallelization over multiple GPU nodes. We showcase the abilities of this code and present timings for two benchmark systems: fulvene solvated in acetonitrile and a charge transfer system in which a photoexcited zinc-phthalocyanine donor transfers charge to a fullerene acceptor through multiple electronic states on an ultrafast timescale. Our implementation paves the way for an efficient semiclassical approach to model the nonadiabatic excited state dynamics of complex molecules, materials, and condensed phase systems. We measured the austenitic FeCr18Ni12.5 stainless steel Hugoniot as a function of crystallographic direction to approximately 60 GPa. We shock-compressed FeCr18Ni12.5 samples oriented along ⟨ 100 ⟩ , ⟨ 110 ⟩ , and ⟨ 111 ⟩ to mean stresses ranging 30.5–58.1 GPa via Ta plate impact in a large-bore powder gun and measured the free-surface velocities with laser interferometry. We unambiguously observed the largest post-shock free-surface velocity along ⟨ 100 ⟩ in each experiment, which consequently produced the lowest shock velocity along that orientation. However, the propagation of experimental uncertainties through the impedance matching scheme used to compute the shock velocity produced sufficient uncertainty overlap to preclude definitive conclusion of Hugoniot anisotropy. Developing phase diagrams for inhomogeneous systems in thermodynamics is difficult, in part, due to the large phase space and the possibility of unstable and metastable solutions arising from first-order phase transitions. Pseudo-arclength continuation (PAC) is a method that allows one to trace out stable and unstable solutions of nonlinear systems. Typically, PAC utilizes the Jacobian in order to implement Newton (or quasi-Newton) steps. In this work, we present a Jacobian-free PAC method that is amenable to the usual workflows in inhomogeneous thermodynamics. We demonstrate our method in systems that have first-order phase transitions, including a novel example of polyelectrolyte complex coacervation in confinement, where multiple surface phase transitions occur and can overlap with one another. In this paper, we report a new algorithm for creating an adaptive basis set in the Multiconfigurational Ehrenfest (MCE) method, which is termed Full Cloning (FC), and test it together with the existing Multiple Cloning (MC) using the spin-boson model at zero-temperature as a benchmark. The zero-temperature spin-boson regime is a common hurdle in the development of methods that seek to model quantum dynamics. Two versions of MCE exist. We demonstrate that MC is vital for the convergence of MCE version 2 (MCEv2). The first version (MCEv1) converges much better than MCEv2, but FC improves its convergence in a few cases where it is hard to converge it with the help of a reasonably small size of the basis set. Supramolecular polymer networks exhibit unique and tunable thermodynamic and dynamic properties that are attractive for a wide array of applications, such as adhesives, rheology modifiers, and compatibilizers. Coherent states (CS) field theories have emerged as a powerful approach for describing the possibly infinite reaction products that result from associating polymers. Up to this point, CS theories have focused on relatively simple polymer architectures. In this work, we develop an extension of the CS framework to study polymers with reversible bonds distributed along the polymer backbone, opening a broad array of new materials that can be studied with theoretical methods. We use this framework to discern the role of reactive site placement on sol–gel phase behavior, including the prediction of a microstructured gel phase that has not been reported for neutral polymer gels. The plane-wave pseudopotential (PW-PP) formalism is widely used for the first-principles electronic structure calculation of extended periodic systems. The PW-PP approach has also been adapted for real-time time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT) to investigate time-dependent electronic dynamical phenomena. In this work, we detail recent advances in the PW-PP formalism for RT-TDDFT, particularly how maximally localized Wannier functions (MLWFs) are used to accelerate simulations using the exact exchange. We also discuss several related developments, including an anti-Hermitian correction for the time-dependent MLWFs (TD-MLWFs) when a time-dependent electric field is applied, the refinement procedure for TD-MLWFs, comparison of the velocity and length gauge approaches for applying an electric field, and elimination of long-range electrostatic interaction, as well as usage of a complex absorbing potential for modeling isolated systems when using the PW-PP formalism. Race car drivers not only face high-speed challenges but also need to manage complex team dynamics and sponsor relations and are exposed to unique fan access while competing. This study examines the unique psychological aspects of motorsports and how race car drivers currently train psychological skills to match these distinctive demands. Adopting a phenomenological approach, this study involved semistructured interviews with 11 professional race car drivers. The interviews focused on drivers' psychological experiences during racing and their psychological preparation. Thematic analysis of the interview data revealed key psychological factors impacting performance. These included concentration, confidence, anxiety, managing emotional states, unique social aspects, and motivation. Drivers also had an interest in psychological-skills training but reported a lack of resources and consistent application. This study highlights the unique psychological challenges presented in motorsports, and the findings underscore the need for targeted psychological-skills training and resources for race car drivers. Sire is a Python/C++ library that is used both to prototype new algorithms and as an interoperability engine for exchanging information between molecular simulation programs. It provides a collection of file parsers and information converters that together make it easier to combine and leverage the functionality of many other programs and libraries. This empowers researchers to use sire to write a single script that can, for example, load a molecule from a PDBx/mmCIF file via Gemmi, perform SMARTS searches via RDKit, parameterize molecules using BioSimSpace, run GPU-accelerated molecular dynamics via OpenMM, and then display the resulting dynamics trajectory in a NGLView Jupyter notebook 3D molecular viewer. This functionality is built on by BioSimSpace, which uses sire's molecular information engine to interconvert with programs such as GROMACS, NAMD, Amber, and AmberTools for automated molecular parameterization and the running of molecular dynamics, metadynamics, and alchemical free energy workflows. Sire comes complete with a powerful molecular information search engine, plus trajectory loading and editing, analysis, and energy evaluation engines. This, when combined with an in-built computer algebra system, gives substantial flexibility to researchers to load, search for, edit, and combine molecular information from multiple sources and use that to drive novel algorithms by combining functionality from other programs. A femtosecond laser induced photofragmentation fluorescence (fs-LIPF) scheme for the sensitive detection and imaging of water vapor is presented. Two photons of 244.3 nm excite water to the D ̃ state and produce hydroxyl radicals in the fluorescing A ̃ state. Two more photons promote electrons from the D ̃ state to a neutral Rydberg state of the (1b2)−1 ionic core through a 2 + 2 doubly resonant process. The resulting high-lying Rydberg state undergoes neutral dissociation, and the energetic hydrogen fragments are detected from their Balmer series fluorescence. These channels (in the low-pressure limit) have detection sensitivities around 1012 molecules per cubic centimeters, orders of magnitude more sensitive than laser-induced fluorescence based approaches, allowing for sensitive non-invasive detection and imaging of water density for many important processes. This study sought to investigate the effect of cold ambient temperature on subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue (SCAAT) lipolysis and blood flow during steady-state endurance exercise in endurance-trained cyclists. Ten males (age: 23 ± 3 years; peak oxygen consumption: 60.60 ± 4.84 ml·kg−1·min−1; body fat: 18.4% ± 3.5%) participated in baseline lactate threshold (LT) and peak oxygen consumption testing, two familiarization trials, and two experimental trials. Experimental trials consisted of cycling in COLD (3 °C; 42% relative humidity) and neutral (NEU; 19 °C; 39% relative humidity) temperatures. Exercise consisted of 25 min cycling at 70% LT and 25 min at 90% LT. In situ SCAAT lipolysis and blood flow were measured via microdialysis. Heart rate, core temperature, carbohydrate and fat oxidation, blood glucose, and blood lactate were also measured. Heart rate, core temperature, oxygen consumption, and blood lactate increased with exercise but were not different between COLD and NEU. SCAAT blood flow did not change from rest to exercise or between COLD and NEU. Interstitial glycerol increased during exercise (p <.001) with no difference between COLD and NEU. Fat oxidation increased (p <.001) at the onset of exercise and remained elevated thereafter with no difference between COLD and NEU. Carbohydrate oxidation increased with increasing exercise intensity and was greater at 70% LT in COLD compared to NEU (p =.030). No differences were observed between conditions for any other variable. Cycling exercise increased SCAAT lipolysis but not blood flow. Ambient temperature did not alter SCAAT metabolism, SCAAT blood flow, or fat oxidation in well-trained cyclists, though cold exposure increased whole-body carbohydrate oxidation at lower exercise intensities. Refractory high-entropy alloys are under consideration for applications where materials are subjected to high temperatures and levels of radiation, such as in the fusion power sector. However, at present, their scope is limited because they are highly brittle at room temperature. One suggested route to mitigate this issue is by alloying with Ti. In this theoretical study, using a computationally efficient linear-response theory based on density functional theory calculations of the electronic structure of the disordered alloys, we study the nature of atomic short-range order in these multi-component materials, as well as assessing their overall phase stability. Our analysis enables direct inference of phase transitions in addition to the extraction of an atomistic, pairwise model of the internal energy of an alloy suitable for study via, e.g., Monte Carlo simulations. Once Ti is added into either the NbMoTaW or VNbMoTaW system, we find that there is competition between chemical phase ordering and segregation. These results shed light on observed chemical inhomogeneity in experimental samples, as well as providing fundamental insight into the physics of these complex systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes the perceptions and experiences of collaboration between teachers of physical education (n = 3) and special educators (n = 3) on teaching pupils with disabilities. Using a qualitative approach, the study seeks to establish the nature and extent of collaboration among these teachers and to identify the benefits and barriers to implementation. Semistructured interviews were used as the main data source. Data were collected from teachers working in the public school system in the southern part of Finland. The findings indicate that while teachers are mostly aware of the value of collaboration, its implementation varies immensely among the different schools. While the special educators in this study see themselves mainly responsible for supporting pupils with disabilities, the physical education teachers showed a strong commitment to the subject matter of their teaching. This article originated with a simple question: why do the chairman and vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as the service chiefs, all serve four-year terms? The evolution over the course of a century towards that fixed length reflects debate and tension about balancing three concerns: becoming familiar with one's duties and responsibilities, offering independent military advice, and preventing the military's accumulation of power. This article focuses on the local defense threat posed by German commerce raiders and warships operating in or near the Caribbean between August 1914 and May 1915, when the War Office sanctioned recruitment in the Caribbean for what would eventually become the British West Indies Regiment. We argue that in addition to institutional racism and other factors, the War Office's decision to begin recruiting Black West Indians in May 1915 should be understood within a larger strategic context, and ongoing discussions between the War Office, the Colonial Office, and the Admiralty, about the German naval threat to the British West Indies and the safety of Britain's overseas possessions. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy of atomically ordered L10 FeNi (the meteoritic mineral tetrataenite) is studied within a first-principles electronic structure framework. Two compositions are examined: equiatomic Fe 0.5 Ni 0.5 and an Fe-rich composition, Fe 0.56 Ni 0.44 . It is confirmed that, for the single crystals modeled in this work, the leading-order anisotropy coefficient K 1 dominates the higher-order coefficients K 2 and K 3. To enable comparison with experiment, the effects of both imperfect atomic long-range order and finite temperature are included. While our computational results initially appear to undershoot the measured experimental values for this system, careful scrutiny of the original analysis due to Néel et al. [J. Appl. Phys. 35, 873 (1964)] suggests that our computed value of K 1 is, in fact, consistent with experimental values, and that the noted discrepancy has its origins in the nanoscale polycrystalline, multivariant nature of experimental samples, that yields much larger values of K 2 and K 3 than expected a priori. These results provide fresh insight into the existing discrepancies in the literature regarding the value of tetrataenite's uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy in both natural and synthetic samples. The electronic structure of highly mismatched semiconductor alloys is characterized by carrier localization and strongly influenced by the local alloy microstructure. First-principles calculations can deliver valuable quantitative insight, but their associated computational expense limits alloy supercell size and imposes artificial long-range ordering, which can produce misleading results. The empirical tight-binding method (ETBM) provides a transparent approach to investigate large-scale supercells on an atomistic level, to quantitatively predict the electronic structure of semiconductor alloys. Here, we overview key aspects and considerations for establishing ETBMs. Additionally, we discuss and highlight, given that the ETBM matrix elements are described in the language of overlaps between localized atomic orbitals, that ETBMs have proven highly successful in analyzing the impact of localized and resonant impurity states, as well as disorder, on the optoelectronic properties of highly mismatched alloys. The ETBM continues to provide valuable insight for emerging material systems, including two-dimensional materials, perovskites and their heterostructures, and provides a framework to address technologically relevant questions including the importance of short-range disorder for loss mechanisms such as non-radiative Auger–Meitner recombination. Moreover, the ETBM furnishes a quantitative basis for continuum models such as k ⋅ p or localization landscape theories, allowing to explicitly incorporate disorder effects in nanostructures to underpin predictive device-level analysis. With rising tensions between the United States on one side, and China and Russia on the other, the three countries have grown mutually accusatory about some testing activities they conduct to maintain and modernize their nuclear arsenals, with allegations made by the United States focusing on very low-yield fission experiments. In a world where trust in the nonproliferation regime is weakening and most bilateral arms control measures have been suspended, many experts fear that recriminations over very low-yield tests could spark a new escalation spiral to full-scale nuclear tests. Transparency measures could diffuse the suspicions around these tests and strengthen the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which is largely being complied with but still not legally in force. Digital heritage portal interfaces are generally similar to digital library and search engine interfaces in displaying search results as a list of brief metadata records. The knowledge organization and search result display of these systems are item-centric, with little support for identifying relationships between items. This paper proposes a knowledge graph system and visualization interface as a promising solution for digital heritage systems to support users in browsing related items, understanding the relationships between items, and synthesizing a narrative on an issue. The paper discusses design issues for the knowledge graph, graph database, and graph visualization, and offers recommendations based on the authors' experience in developing three knowledge graph systems for archive and digital humanities resources: the Zubir Said personal archive collection at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore; Singapore Pioneers social network; and Polyglot Medicine knowledge graph of Asian traditional and herbal medicine. The enigmatic mechanism underlying unconventional high-temperature superconductivity, especially the role of lattice dynamics, has remained a subject of debate. Theoretical insights have long been hindered due to the lack of an accurate first-principles description of the lattice dynamics of cuprates. Recently, using the r2SCAN meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) functional, we have been able to achieve accurate phonon spectra of an insulating cuprate YBa2Cu3O6 and discover significant magnetoelastic coupling in experimentally interesting Cu–O bond stretching optical modes [Ning et al., Phys. Rev. B 107, 045126 (2023)]. We extend this work by comparing Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof and r2SCAN performances with corrections from the on-site Hubbard U and the D4 van der Waals (vdW) methods, aiming at further understanding on both the materials science side and the density functional side. We demonstrate the importance of vdW and self-interaction corrections for accurate first-principles YBa2Cu3O6 lattice dynamics. Since r2SCAN by itself partially accounts for these effects, the good performance of r2SCAN is now more fully explained. In addition, the performances of the Tao–Mo series of meta-GGAs, which are constructed in a different way from the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-GGA and its revised version r2SCAN, are also compared and discussed. We present a novel theoretical formulation for performing quantum dynamics in terms of moments within the single-particle description. By expressing the quantum dynamics in terms of increasing orders of moments, instead of single-particle wave functions as generally done in time-dependent density functional theory, we describe an approach for reducing the high computational cost of simulating the quantum dynamics. The equation of motion is given for the moments by deriving analytical expressions for the first-order and second-order time derivatives of the moments, and a numerical scheme is developed for performing quantum dynamics by expanding the moments in the Taylor series as done in classical molecular dynamics simulations. We propose a few numerical approaches using this theoretical formalism on a simple one-dimensional model system, for which an analytically exact solution can be derived. The application of the approaches to an anharmonic system is also discussed to illustrate their generality. We also discuss the use of an artificial neural network model to circumvent the numerical evaluation of the second-order time derivatives of the moments, as analogously done in the context of classical molecular dynamics simulations. Context: The utility of baseline vestibular and ocular motor screening (VOMS) in high school and collegiate athletes is demonstrated throughout the literature; however, baseline VOMS data at the youth level are limited. In addition, with the recent adoption of the change scoring method, there is a need to document baseline VOMS total and change scores in a pediatric population. Objective: To document baseline VOMS total and change scores and to document the internal consistency of the VOMS in pediatric soccer athletes. We hypothesized that the VOMS would demonstrate strong internal consistency in pediatric soccer athletes. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Pediatric soccer athletes (N = 110; range = 5–12 y) completed the VOMS at baseline. Descriptive statistics summarized demographic information, VOMS total scores, and VOMS change scores. Cronbach α assessed internal consistency for VOMS total scores and change scores. Results: Twenty-one (19.1%) participants had at least one total score above clinical cutoffs (≥2 on any VOMS component and ≥5 cm on average near point convergence). Forty (36.4%) participants had at least one change score above clinical cutoffs (≥1 on any VOMS component and ≥3 cm on average near point convergence). The internal consistency was strong for total scores with all VOMS components included (Cronbach α =.80) and change scores (Cronbach α =.89). Conclusions: Although results suggest VOMS items measure distinct components of the vestibular and ocular motor systems, caution should be taken when interpreting VOMS total and change scores in pediatric athletes, as overreporting symptoms is common, thereby impacting the false-positive rate. Mind Body Connect is a charity that delivers community-based physical exercise (PE) classes to people in recovery from substance use disorders. This study aimed to identify the contribution that strength training played in the development of positive short- and long-term psychological attributes for people recovering from substance use disorders by assessing (a) the short-term associations between participation in group exercise classes (N = 43, t = 2,940) and (b) the prospective long-term association between strength development and individuals' self-assessed level of "grit" among participants for whom strength training became a habitual activity (N = 13, median 8 weeks supported training). Participants completed demographic, Profile of Mood States—Adapted Short Form, and Short Grit Scale questionnaires before and after each strength training session over a period of 45 noncompulsory training sessions between February 2020 and March 2021. Weekly training logs recording the weight lifted were normalized into a measure of physical capital development. Short-term associations were tested using multilevel regression models predicting change in mean Grit score with interactions for gender; long-term associations were assessed through the use of latent growth models. We found that training sessions were associated with weak to moderate reductions (β = −0.112 to −0.533) in many negative mood states but elevated fatigue ( β MEN = 1.071, β WOMEN = 0.397). Latent growth in recorded strength was strongly associated with latent growth in self-assessed grit (β = 0.674). Objective Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are commonly reported in individuals presenting for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) evaluation. Performance validity tests (PVTs) and symptom validity tests (SVTs) are essential to ADHD evaluations in young adults, but extant research suggests that those who report ACEs may be inaccurately classified as invalid on these measures. The current study aimed to assess the degree to which ACE exposure differentiated PVT and SVT performance and ADHD symptom reporting in a multi-racial sample of adults presenting for ADHD evaluation. Method This study included 170 adults referred for outpatient neuropsychological ADHD evaluation who completed the ACE Checklist and a neurocognitive battery that included multiple PVTs and SVTs. Analysis of variance was used to examine differences in PVT and SVT performance among those with high (≥4) and low (≤3) reported ACEs. Results Main effects of the ACE group were observed, such that high ACE group reporting demonstrated higher scores on SVTs assessing ADHD symptom over-reporting and infrequent psychiatric and somatic symptoms on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form. Conversely, no significant differences emerged in total PVT failures across ACE groups. Conclusions Those with high ACE exposure were more likely to have higher scores on SVTs assessing over-reporting and infrequent responses. In contrast, ACE exposure did not affect PVT performance. Thus, ACE exposure should be considered specifically when evaluating SVT performance in the context of ADHD evaluations, and more work is needed to understand factors that contribute to different patterns of symptom reporting as a function of ACE exposure. Background: Recent outbreaks of Ebola virus disease (EVD) and Marburg virus disease (MVD) in sub-Saharan Africa illustrate the need to better understand animal reservoirs, burden of disease, and human transmission of filoviruses. This protocol outlines a systematic literature review to assess the prevalence of filoviruses that infect humans in sub-Saharan Africa. A secondary aim is to qualitatively describe and evaluate the assays used to assess prevalence. Methods: The data sources for this systematic review include PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science. Titles, abstracts, and full texts will be reviewed for inclusion by a primary reviewer and then by a team of secondary reviewers, and data will be extracted using a pre-specified and piloted data extraction form. The review will include human cross-sectional studies, cohort studies, and randomized controlled trials conducted in sub-Saharan Africa up until March 13, 2024 that have been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, with no language restrictions. Prevalence will be stratified by pathogen, population, assay, and sampling methodology and presented in forest plots with estimated prevalence and 95% confidence intervals. If there are enough studies within a stratum, I2 statistics will be calculated (using R statistical software), and data will be pooled if heterogeneity is low. In addition, assays used to detect infection will be evaluated. All studies included in the review will be assessed for quality and risk of bias using the JBI Prevalence Critical Appraisal Tool and for certainty using the GRADE certainty ratings. Discussion: Accurately measuring the rate of exposure to filoviruses infecting humans in sub-Saharan Africa using prevalence provides an essential understanding of natural history, transmission, and the role of subclinical infection. This systematic review will identify research gaps and provide directions for future research seeking to improve our understanding of filovirus infections. The use of acute carbon monoxide inhalation (COi) and hot water immersion (HWI) are of growing interest as interventions to stimulate erythropoietin (EPO) production. However, whether EPO production is further augmented when combining these stressors and whether there are sex differences in this response are poorly understood. Therefore, we measured circulating EPO concentration in response to acute COi and HWI independently and in combination and determined whether the responses were altered by sex. Participants completed three study visits—COi, HWI, and combined COi and HWI—separated by 1 week in a randomized, balanced, crossover design. Renal blood velocity was measured during all interventions, and carboxyhaemoglobin was measured during and after COi. Serum samples were analysed every hour for 6 h post‐intervention for EPO concentration. HWI decreased renal blood velocity (46.2 cm/s to 36.2 cm/s) (P < 0.0001), and COi increased carboxyhaemoglobin (1.5%–12.8%) (P < 0.0001) without changing renal blood velocity (46.4–45.2 cm/s) (P = 0.4456). All three interventions increased peak EPO concentration from baseline (COi: 6.02–9.74 mIU/mL; HWI: 6.80–11.10 mIU/mL; COi + HWI: 6.71–10.91 mIU/mL) (P = 0.0048) and to the same extent (P = 0.3505). On average, females increased EPO while males did not in response to COi (females: 6.17 mIU/mL; males: 1.27 mIU/mL) (P = 0.0010), HWI (females: 6.47 mIU/mL; males: 2.14 mIU/mL) (P = 0.0104), and COi and HWI (females: 6.65 mIU/mL; males: 1.76 mIU/mL) (P = 0.0256). Background Excessive pulmonary inflammation and damage are characteristic features of severe influenza virus infections. LAT8881 is a synthetic 16–amino acid cyclic peptide form of a naturally occurring C-terminal fragment of human growth hormone with therapeutic efficacy against influenza. Shorter linear peptides are typically easier to manufacture and formulate for delivery than larger cyclic peptides. A 6–amino acid linear peptide fragment of LAT8881, LAT9997, was investigated as a potential influenza therapy. Methods LAT9997 was evaluated for its potential to limit disease in a preclinical mouse model of severe influenza infection. Results Intranasal treatment of mice with either LAT8881 or LAT9997 from day 1 following influenza infection significantly improved survival outcomes. Initiating LAT9997 treatment at the onset of severe disease also significantly improved disease severity. Greater disease resistance in LAT9997-treated mice correlated with reduced lung immunopathology, damage markers, vascular leak, and epithelial cell death. Treatment reduced viral loads, cytokines, and neutrophil infiltration in the airways yet maintained protective alveolar macrophages in a dose-dependent manner. Sequential trimming of N- and C-terminal amino acids from LAT9997 revealed a structure-activity relationship. Conclusions These findings provide preclinical evidence that therapeutic LAT9997 treatment limits viral burden and characteristic features of severe influenza, including hyperinflammation and lung damage. Despite major biomedical advancements in various realms of oncology, the benefits of these developments are not equitably distributed, particularly in underresourced settings. Although much work has described the challenges and systemic barriers in global cancer control, in this article we focus on success stories. This article describes clinical care delivered at Rwanda's Butaro Cancer Center of Excellence, the cancer research collaborations under India's National Cancer Grid, and the efforts of Latin America's Institute of Cancer of São Paulo in advancing cancer care and training. These examples highlight the potential of strategic collaborations and resource allocation strategies in improving cancer care globally. We emphasize the critical role of partnerships between physicians and allied health professionals, funders, and policy makers in enhancing access to treatment and infrastructure, advancing contextualized research and national guidelines, and establishing regional and global collaborations. Introduction Although contact days—days with health-care contact outside home—are increasingly adopted as a measure of time toxicity and treatment burden, they could also serve as a surrogate of treatment-related harm. We sought to assess the association between contact days and patient-reported outcomes and the prognostic ability of contact days. Methods We conducted a secondary analysis of CO.17 that evaluated cetuximab vs supportive care in patients with advanced colorectal cancer. CO.17 collected European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire C30 instrument data. We assessed the association between number of contact days in a window and changes in physical function and global health status and the association between number of contact days in the first 4 weeks with overall survival. Results There was a negative association between the number of contact days and change in physical function (per each additional contact day: at 4 weeks, 1.50-point decrease; 8 weeks, 1.06-point decrease; P  < .0001 for both) but not with global health status. This negative association was seen in patients receiving cetuximab but not supportive care. More contact days in the first 4 weeks was associated with worse overall survival for all participants and patients receiving cetuximab (per each additional contact day: all participants, adjusted hazard ratio [HR] = 1.07, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.05 to 1.10; and cetuximab, adjusted HR = 1.08, 95% CI = 1.05 to 1.11; P  < .0001 for both). Conclusions In this secondary analysis of a clinical trial, more contact days early in the course were associated with declines in physical function and worse survival in all participants and in participants receiving cancer-directed treatment. An over-active renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is characterized by elevated angiotensin II (Ang II). While Ang II can promote metabolic and mitochondrial dysfunction in tissues, little is known about its role in the gastrointestinal system (GI). Here, we treated rat primary colonic epithelial cells with Ang II (1–5000 nM) to better define their role in the GI. We hypothesized that Ang II would negatively affect mitochondrial bioenergetics as these organelles express Ang II receptors. Ang II increased cellular ATP production but reduced the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) of colonocytes. However, cells maintained mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation and glycolysis with treatment, reflecting metabolic compensation with impaired MMP. To determine whether lipid dysregulation was evident, untargeted lipidomics were conducted. A total of 1949 lipids were detected in colonocytes spanning 55 distinct (sub)classes. Ang II (1 nM) altered the abundance of some sphingosines [So(d16:1)], ceramides [Cer-AP(t18:0/24:0)], and phosphatidylcholines [OxPC(16:0_20:5(2O)], while 100 nM Ang II altered some triglycerides and phosphatidylserines [PS(19:0_22:1). Ang II did not alter the relative expression of several enzymes in lipid metabolism; however, the expression of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 2 (PDK2) was increased, and PDK2 can be protective against dyslipidemia. The inhibitory-kappaB kinases (IKKs) IKKα and IKKβ play central roles in regulating the non-canonical and canonical NF-κB signalling pathways. Whilst the proteins that transduce the signals of each pathway have been extensively characterised, the clear dissection of the functional roles of IKKα-mediated non-canonical NF-κB signalling versus IKKβ-driven canonical signalling remains to be fully elucidated. Progress has relied upon complementary molecular and pharmacological tools; however, the lack of highly potent and selective IKKα inhibitors has limited advances. Herein, we report the development of an aminoindazole-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine scaffold into a novel series of IKKα inhibitors. We demonstrate high potency and selectivity against IKKα over IKKβ in vitro and explain the structure–activity relationships using structure-based molecular modelling. We show selective target engagement with IKKα in the non-canonical NF-κB pathway for both U2OS osteosarcoma and PC-3M prostate cancer cells by employing isoform-related pharmacodynamic markers from both pathways. Two compounds (SU1261 [IKKα Ki = 10 nM; IKKβ Ki = 680 nM] and SU1349 [IKKα Ki = 16 nM; IKKβ Ki = 3352 nM]) represent the first selective and potent pharmacological tools that can be used to interrogate the different signalling functions of IKKα and IKKβ in cells. Objectives: Comparisons between Indigenous peoples over time and within a particular geographic region can shed light on the impact of environmental transitions on the skeleton, including relative bone strength, sexual dimorphism, and age‐related changes. Here we compare long bone structural properties of the inhabitants of the late prehistoric‐early historic Pecos Pueblo with those of present‐day Indigenous individuals from New Mexico. Materials and Methods: Femora and tibiae of 126 adults from Pecos Pueblo and 226 present‐day adults were included in the study. Cross‐sectional diaphyseal properties—areas and second moments of area—were obtained from past studies of the Pecos Pueblo skeletal sample, and from computed tomography scans of recently deceased individuals in the present‐day sample. Results: Femora and tibiae from Pecos individuals are stronger relative to body size than those of present‐day Indigenous individuals. Present‐day individuals are taller but not wider, and this body shape difference affects cross‐sectional shape, more strongly proximally. The tibia shows anteroposterior strengthening among Pecos individuals, especially among males. Sexual dimorphism in midshaft bone shape is stronger within the Pecos Pueblo sample. With aging, Pecos individuals show more medullary expansion but also more subperiosteal expansion than present‐day individuals, maintaining bone strength despite cortical thinning. Discussion: Higher activity levels, carried out over rough terrain and throughout adult life, likely explain the relatively stronger lower limb bones of the Pecos individuals, as well as their greater subperiosteal expansion with aging. Background: Obesity is a known risk factor for the development of osteoarthritis and the subsequent need for joint replacement. Weight loss has been shown to reduce pain, disability, and the need for joint replacement, particularly in patients with knee osteoarthritis. The aim of this study was to investigate pre‐operative weight change in patients with hip, knee, and shoulder osteoarthritis at a regional, public hospital in Australia, to identify opportunities for pre‐operative weight‐loss intervention. Methods: A retrospective review of patients who underwent elective primary total hip (THR), knee (TKR), and shoulder (TSR) replacement for osteoarthritis was conducted between December 2019 and December 2022. BMI data were collected at three time points: (1) general practitioner (GP) referral; (2) orthopaedic clinic review; and (3) pre‐admission clinic (PAC) assessment. Results: A total of 496 patients were included in the study, of which 205 underwent THR, 251 underwent TKR, and 40 underwent TSR. The mean patient age was 67 years, and 46.4% were female. At the time of GP referral, the mean body mass index (BMI) was 31.4 kg/m2. Across the study period, only 2% of patients experienced clinically significant weight loss pre‐operatively (≥5% of total body weight). Conclusion: This study has demonstrated that very few patients lose weight prior to undergoing joint replacement in the public sector in Australia. Background: Oral health conditions are common in children and young people (CYP) with kidney disorders. There is currently limited literature on how confident paediatric nephrology teams feel to identify and manage oral health concerns for their patients. Method: An exploratory mixed-method survey was distributed across all 13 UK specialist paediatric nephrology centres with responses received from consultants, registrars, specialist nurses and special interest (SPIN) paediatricians. Results: Responses received from 109 multidisciplinary team members of 13/13 (100%) UK tertiary units. Ninety-two percent (n = 100) of respondents reported they had never received any training in oral health and 87% (n = 95) felt that further training would be beneficial to optimise care for patients and improve communication between medical and dental teams. Most respondents reported that they did not regularly examine, or enquire about, their patients' oral health. Only 16% (n = 17) reported that all their paediatric kidney transplant recipients underwent routine dental assessment prior to transplant listing. Severe adverse oral health outcomes were rarely reported and only 11% (n = 12) of respondents recalled having a patient who had a kidney transplant delayed or refused due to concerns about oral infection. Seventy-eight percent (n = 85) felt that joint working with a dental team would benefit patients at their unit; however, 17% (n = 18) felt that current infrastructure does not currently support effective joint working. Conclusions: Across the UK, paediatric kidney health professionals report lack of confidence and training in oral health. Upskilling subspecialty teams and creating dental referral pathways are recommended to maximise oral health outcomes for CYP with kidney diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Cachexia occurs in up to 80% of patients with cancer. Although cancer-associated cachexia dramatically decreases overall survival and quality of life, it is often overlooked. To make meaningful progress in identifying cancer cachexia earlier and finding treatments for this condition, Moffitt Cancer Center held its first Cachexia Working Group Retreat in 2022. This manuscript describes the priorities discussed at the retreat and highlights collaborations that arose afterward. For many patients, the cancer continuum includes a syndrome known as cancer-associated cachexia (CAC), which encompasses the unintended loss of body weight and muscle mass, and is often associated with fat loss, decreased appetite, lower tolerance and poorer response to treatment, poor quality of life, and reduced survival. Unfortunately, there are no effective therapeutic interventions to completely reverse cancer cachexia and no FDA-approved pharmacologic agents; hence, new approaches are urgently needed. In May of 2022, researchers and clinicians from Moffitt Cancer Center held an inaugural retreat on CAC that aimed to review the state of the science, identify knowledge gaps and research priorities, and foster transdisciplinary collaborative research projects. This review summarizes research priorities that emerged from the retreat, examples of ongoing collaborations, and opportunities to move science forward. The highest priorities identified include the need to (1) evaluate patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures obtained in clinical practice and assess their use in improving CAC-related outcomes; (2) identify biomarkers (imaging, molecular, and/or behavioral) and novel analytic approaches to accurately predict the early onset of CAC and its progression; and (3) develop and test interventions (pharmacologic, nutritional, exercise-based, and through mathematical modeling) to prevent CAC progression and improve associated symptoms and outcomes. Early-life conditions may impact an individual's ability to survive long enough to reach breeding age as well as its lifetime reproductive success (LRS). We examined how different aspects of parental quality and natal territory habitat were correlated with the probability of recruitment and subsequent LRS in a top avian predator. Using resight and banding data from a 30-year demographic study on Swainson's Hawks (Buteo swainsoni), we first examined factors related to recruitment probability, followed by a secondary follow-up analysis we explored correlates of reproductive success, tracking the same individuals as they progress through major life stages. Our analysis tracks only individuals marked as nestlings and where both parents were also uniquely marked and known to the study. This marking requirement allowed us to examine mated pair characteristics while simultaneously separating the effects of parental experience by sex. Pair bond duration best explained recruitment and was positively correlated with the probability of offspring being recruited into the local breeding population. For individuals that survived the challenges of early life and recruited, a far smaller subset of individuals, we found that maternal experience best predicted an offspring's quality, as expressed by LRS, receiving twice the support of other models. Surprisingly, while pair bond duration correlated with recruitment probability, it was not predictive of offspring LRS. These modeling steps mirror the progressive removal of frail individuals from the population, and reveal that different aspects predict success in advancing life stages. We hypothesize that more established pairs can successfully fledge lower quality offspring that recruit but subsequently have low lifetime reproductive success, while maternal effects have a large influence on offspring quality. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) pose a challenge for achieving science that is both reproducible and replicable. The challenge is compounded in supervised models that depend on manually labeled training data, as they introduce additional decision‐making and processes that require thorough documentation and reporting. We address these limitations by providing an approach to hand labeling training data for supervised ML that integrates quantitative content analysis (QCA)—a method from social science research. The QCA approach provides a rigorous and well‐documented hand labeling procedure to improve the replicability and reproducibility of supervised ML applications in Earth systems science (ESS), as well as the ability to evaluate them. Specifically, the approach requires (a) the articulation and documentation of the exact decision‐making process used for assigning hand labels in a "codebook" and (b) an empirical evaluation of the reliability" of the hand labelers. In this paper, we outline the contributions of QCA to the field, along with an overview of the general approach. We then provide a case study to further demonstrate how this framework has and can be applied when developing supervised ML models for applications in ESS. With this approach, we provide an actionable path forward for addressing ethical considerations and goals outlined by recent AGU work on ML ethics in ESS. Plain Language Summary: Artificial intelligence and machine learning can make it hard to do science in a way that can be repeated. This can mean redoing a study in the exact same way to see if you can get the same or similar results (reproducibility) or trying to use the same study design on a new problem to see if the results are the same or similar (replicability). These types of scientific repetitions is important for developing robust knowledge, but is hard to do with certain types of machine learning that rely on data that were categorized by researchers. The researchers have to make decisions and categorize their data, which the machine learning algorithm then uses as a guide to make its own decisions. Generally, there is not enough information shared by the researchers about how these decisions were made to repeat the science or evaluate how good it is. In this paper, we provide a way to address these shortcomings. The approach and example we offer illustrates how to (a) create a rulebook that can be shared for how to make decisions and (b) quantitatively measure how consistent the researchers are at using that rulebook to make their decisions. This study examines minor league baseball players' future-oriented labor by interviewing 44 baseball players and collecting data on 8,000 minor league baseball players' careers. Minor league baseball players' expectations of reaching Major League Baseball impacted how they evaluated their work in the present, leading them to tolerate unfair pay and working conditions. We show that players' expectations of reaching Major League Baseball were moderately unrealistic, partly due to managerial practices encouraging unrealistic expectations. This study contributes to labor research by showing that future-oriented labor ideology is based on unrealistic expectations that employers can promote to create opportunities for future status coercion. Oblique shock wave–interface interactions of gases and liquids have been extensively studied in shock tubes using optical methods to measure equation-of-state (EOS) parameters. However, this is difficult with solids due to their opaqueness to visible light. X ray phase contrast imaging (XPCI) has the penetrative strength to probe solids while still being sensitive to mass density and enhancing the visibility of material boundaries. We investigate the accuracy and repeatability of measuring the mean value of the average mass density (areal density divided by thickness) over region S (B S) and flow deflection angle (θ) from XPCI images of a sample. To that end, a Hough transform-based method for measuring θ is developed. To measure B S , the XPCI image intensity probability density function (PDF) is modeled accounting for the spatial distribution of x ray energy, scintillator response, and pulse-to-pulse variation in the x ray intensity. In addition, a Monte Carlo-based algorithm for computing the B S PDF is developed. Both methods are validated on an impact-generated oblique shock wave interacting at a solid polymer-to-polymer interface. This is accomplished through a comparison to hydrodynamic simulations using well-established EOS. Under the modeling framework for the XPCI image intensity, B S is computed with an accuracy of < 0.1 % and precision of 3%–5%, while θ has an uncertainty of 0.2 ° , respectively. This shows that the XPCI-based model that is developed here could be an invaluable tool for high-fidelity testing of hydrodynamic models in shock polar configurations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Block copolymers at homopolymer interfaces are poised to play a critical role in the compatibilization of mixed plastic waste, an area of growing importance as the rate of plastic accumulation rapidly increases. Using molecular dynamics simulations of Kremer–Grest polymer chains, we have investigated how the number of blocks and block degree of polymerization in a linear multiblock copolymer impacts the interface thermodynamics of strongly segregated homopolymer blends, which is key to effective compatibilization. The second virial coefficient reveals that interface thermodynamics are more sensitive to block degree of polymerization than to the number of blocks. Moreover, we identify a strong correlation between surface pressure (reduction of interfacial tension) and the spatial uniformity of block junctions on the interface, yielding a morphological framework for interpreting the role of compatibilizer architecture (number of blocks) and block degree of polymerization. These results imply that, especially at high interfacial loading, the choice of architecture of a linear multiblock copolymer compatibilizing surfactant does not greatly affect the modification of interfacial tension. In the early 1960s, as the Federation of Malaysia was being established, Britain joined Southeast Asian allies in an undeclared war in Borneo against Indonesia. This struggle was waged most visibly on the borders of Malaysian Borneo, notably in the state of Sarawak, but the British military was ever mindful of the internal threat from a growing communist network. Purpose: Advance care planning (ACP) is generally part of patients' rights and decision-making processes. It is a component of the patient--physician care dynamics, especially in the context of life-threatening illness. Little is known about ACP and the utilisation of advance directives in the Philippines, a country of 110 million people. The study aimed to explore the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAPs) of resident physicians in a national university hospital in the Philippines regarding ACP for patients with advanced cancer. Methods: Using a cross-sectional design involving resident physicians, an online survey with a self-administered questionnaire was distributed and answered by a total of 202 respondents. Results: Results show that resident physicians generally: (1) view palliative and hospice medicine to be the same and without differences, (2) are comfortable with discussing ACP and prognosis of medical conditions with patients and their families, but (3) do not regularly initiate or offer ACP to them, (4) identify a lack of time, fear of imparting emotional distress to patients and their families and personal discomfort as barriers to conducting ACP and (5) have had no formal training for ACP but are willing to undergo such formation, given the opportunity. Conclusion: This study highlights the continuing need to bridge and unite KAPs pertaining to ACP among physicians. Further studies should be undertaken to device a proper training program and better explore the complexities of end-of-life care as it is experienced by Filipino patients with advanced cancer. Skyrmions are small topologically protected magnetic structures that hold promise for applications from data storage to neuromorphic computing and they have been shown to possess internal microwave frequency excitations. Skyrmions in a synthetic antiferromagnet have been predicted to be smaller and faster than their ferromagnetic equivalents and also shown to possess more internal modes. In this work, we consider the breathing modes of skyrmions in a four repetition synthetic antiferromagnetic multilayer by means of micromagnetic simulations and examine the further splitting of the modes into different arrangements of out-of-phase, in-phase, and modes with more complex phase relationships. This results in a lowering of frequencies, which is promising for skyrmion sensing applications in a synthetic antiferromagnet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Young athletes who specialize early in a single sport may subsequently be at increased risk of injury. While heightened injury risk has been theorized to be related to volume or length of exposure to a single sport, the development of unhealthy, homogenous movement patterns, and rigid neuromuscular control strategies may also be indicted. Unfortunately, traditional laboratory assessments have limited capability to expose such deficits due to the simplistic and constrained nature of laboratory measurement techniques and analyses. Methods: To overcome limitations of prior studies, the authors proposed a soccer-specific virtual reality header assessment to characterize the generalized movement regularity of 44 young female athletes relative to their degree of sport specialization (high vs low). Participants also completed a traditional drop vertical jump assessment. Results: During the virtual reality header assessment, significant differences in center of gravity sample entropy (a measure of movement regularity) were present between specialized (center of gravity sample entropy: mean = 0.08, SD = 0.02) and nonspecialized center of gravity sample entropy: mean = 0.10, SD = 0.03) groups. Specifically, specialized athletes exhibited more regular movement patterns during the soccer header than the nonspecialized athletes. However, no significant between-group differences were observed when comparing participants' center of gravity time series data from the drop vertical jump assessment. Conclusions: This pattern of altered movement strategy indicates that realistic, sport-specific virtual reality assessments may be uniquely beneficial in exposing overly rigid movement patterns of individuals who engage in repeated sport specialized practice. Two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) spectroscopy, infrared pump–infrared probe spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations were used to study vibrational relaxation by ring and carbonyl stretching modes in a series of methylated xanthine derivatives in acetonitrile and deuterium oxide (heavy water). Isotropic signals from the excited symmetric and asymmetric carbonyl stretch modes decay biexponentially in both solvents. Coherent energy transfer between the symmetric and asymmetric carbonyl stretching modes gives rise to a quantum beat in the time-dependent anisotropy signals. The damping time of the coherent oscillation agrees with the fast decay component of the carbonyl bleach recovery signals, indicating that this time constant reflects intramolecular vibrational redistribution (IVR) to other solute modes. Despite their similar frequencies, the excited ring modes decay monoexponentially with a time constant that matches the slow decay component of the carbonyl modes. The slow decay times, which are faster in heavy water than in acetonitrile, approximately match the ones observed in previous UV pump–IR probe measurements on the same compounds. The slow component is assigned to intermolecular energy transfer to solvent bath modes from low-frequency solute modes, which are populated by IVR and are anharmonically coupled to the carbonyl and ring stretch modes. 2D IR measurements indicate that the carbonyl stretching modes are weakly coupled to the delocalized ring modes, resulting in slow exchange that cannot explain the common solvent-dependence. IVR is suggested to occur at different rates for the carbonyl vs ring modes due to differences in mode-specific couplings and not to differences in the density of accessible states.
