In conjunction with Earth's ongoing global warming, the Southwest China (SWC) region has become a fascinating case study on the control of local climate change. Moreover, an entire period of climate change may partially mask the patterns in some stages. Therefore, in this research, we investigated the spatial patterns of the significant turning years of climatic factor change, and determined the heterogeneity of the spatial patterns of climate change before and after the significant turning years. We used the long time-series of the CRU datasets (CRU_TS4.02) from 1901 to 2017 with a piecewise linear regression model to explore the significant turning-year distribution characteristics of inter-annual and inter-seasonal climate factor changes, and further describe and quantize the differences in the spatio-temporal patterns of climate factors before and after the significant turning years on the grid scale in SWC. Overall, the trends in temperature and precipitation factors in SWC were segmented over the last 120 years, with significant turning years with different regional and stepwise characteristics. In terms of timing, temperature and precipitation factors changed significantly in 1954 and 1928, respectively, and overall temporal variability (0.04 °C/(10 a) (p < 0.05), −0.48 mm/(10 a)) masked the magnitude or direction of variability (0.13 °C/(10 a) and 0.16 °C/(10 a) both at the level of p < 0.05 before the turning year, 19.56 mm/(10 a) (p < 0.05) and 1.19 mm/(10 a) after the turning year) around the watershed years. Spatially, the significant turning years were concentrated in the periods 1940–1993 (temperature) and 1910–2008 (precipitation), and the distribution pattern of the turning years was patchy and concentrated. The turning years of temperature factors were gradually delayed from east to west, and the variability of climate factors before and after the turning years exhibited significant shifts in location (e.g., temperature decreased from southeast to northwest before the turning year and increased after the turning year). After the turning year, the warming variability of the temperature factor increased, while the increasing variability of the precipitation factor decreased. Further integrated analysis revealed that the increase in variability of the climate factor after the turning year was mainly due to the increase in winter and autumn variability (0.05 °C/(10 a), 7.30 mm/(10 a) in autumn; and 0.12 °C/(10 a), 1.97 mm/(10 a) in winter). To the extent that this study provides a necessary academic foundation for efficiently unveiling the spatio-temporal variability properties of climate factors against the background of modern global climate change, more attention should be paid to the location and phase of the study. Objective: Respiratory abnormalities such as upper airway obstruction are common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and are an important cause of mortality and morbidity. We tested the effect of pedunculopontine region (PPNr) stimulation on respiratory maneuvers in human participants with PD, and separately recorded PPNr neural activity reflected in the local field potential (LFP) during these maneuvers. Methods: Nine patients with deep brain stimulation electrodes in PPNr, and seven in globus pallidus interna (GPi) were studied during trials of maximal inspiration followed by forced expiration with stimulation OFF and ON. Local field potentials (LFPs) were recorded in the unstimulated condition. Results: PEFR increased from 6.41 ± 0.63 L/sec in the OFF stimulation state to 7.5 L ± 0.65 L/sec in the ON stimulation state (z = −2.666, df = 8, P = 0.024). Percentage improvement in PEFR was strongly correlated with proximity of the stimulated electrode contact to the mesencephalic locomotor region in the rostral PPN (r = 0.814, n = 9, P = 0.008). Mean PPNr LFP power increased within the alpha band (7–11 Hz) during forced respiratory maneuvers (1.63 ± 0.16 μV2/Hz) compared to resting breathing (0.77 ± 0.16 μV2/Hz; z = −2.197, df = 6, P = 0.028). No changes in alpha activity or spirometric indices were seen with GPi recording or stimulation. Percentage improvement in PEFR was strongly positively correlated with increase in alpha power (r = 0.653, n = 14 (7 PPNr patients recorded bilaterally), P = 0.0096). Interpretation: PPNr stimulation in PD improves indices of upper airway function. Increased alpha‐band activity is seen within the PPNr during forced respiratory maneuvers. With the rapid development of the economy in recent years, water pollution accidents have occurred frequently, and accidents that have occurred in drinking water source areas in particular have seriously affected public health and social safety. The objective of this study is to develop a program to predict the diffusion and migration processes of pollutants after water pollution accidents and apply it to the Heshangshan drinking water source area. Taking Cd as a typical pollutant, the results indicated that Cd concentrations at the water intake reached a maximum value of 1.2490 × 10 4 mg/L at 14.08 min after a hypothetical accident, and the time when the area lost the function of drinking water supply was from 8.35 min to 24.23 min after the accident. Regarding the drinking water source area, the Cd concentration exceeded the related standard during the period from 7.29 min to 41.47 min after the accident, which indicated that it was polluted seriously by the accident for that duration. Moreover, the pollutant entered into the study area at 7.00 min after the accident and had passed through at 45.63 min after the accident, which demonstrated that emergency measures should be taken for this duration. The developed simulation program could simulate the spatial distribution and temporal change of pollution, calculate maximum concentration of pollutants, present pollution scope and time, and forecast diffusion and transport processes. Pain perception can be altered by activity in the periaqueductal gray (PAG). The PAG can decrease the incoming nociceptive signals at the level of the spinal dorsal horn, but it is not clear whether the PAG can also affect the sensory thalamus, ventral posterolateral and ventral posteromedial thalamic nuclei, to modulate pain. However, the PAG and the thalamus have direct connections with each other; so we postulated that the PAG may also modulate pain by inhibiting the sensory nuclei in the thalamus, and that these may also reciprocally influence the PAG. Here, by analyzing the local field potentials recorded from the sensory thalamus and the PAG in chronic pain patients with deep brain stimulation electrodes, we show that PAG stimulation inhibited the sensory thalamus with decreasing thalamic delta, theta, alpha and beta power, and sensory thalamus stimulation excited the PAG with increasing PAG delta and theta power. We demonstrate that the PAG and the sensory thalamus interact reciprocally at short latency, which may be related to pain modulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Background: The midbrain periaqueductal and periventricular gray (PAVG) region is important for pain and autonomic modulation. We have previously described changes in blood pressure dependent upon dorsal or ventral electrode positioning with PAVG deep brain stimulation (DBS), yet controversy exists about whether DBS acts via endogenous opioid release. Method and results: We combined local field potential (LFP) recording from PAVG DBS electrodes in humans with naloxone and saline infusions to determine whether dorsal and ventral PAVG DBS act through opioidergic or other mechanisms. Four awake human subjects were investigated. DBS were implanted contralateral to the painful body part. Electrode contact positions were mapped using MRI and brain atlas information. Naloxone then saline were randomly administered to the blinded subjects and pain rated using a numeric pain rating scale at 30s intervals for 3min. Two subjects received dorsal DBS electrodes and two had ventral placements. Significantly elevated gamma frequency band (30–90Hz) power concomitant with pain exacerbation was found with naloxone versus both saline and rest in dorsal not ventral PAVG LFPs (p <0.005). Significantly elevated delta frequency band (0–4Hz) power (p =0.001) was seen in one ventral PAVG subject with both naloxone and saline infusions. Conclusions: Dorsal PAVG DBS may reduce pain by augmenting endogenous opioid release. Elevated gamma oscillations enhance awareness of worsening pain with opioid blockade. Ventral PAVG DBS may act by separate possibly autonomic mechanisms. Increased delta oscillations indicate a survival rhythm involved in the initiation of passive coping responses to homeostatic changes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: γ-Manganese dioxide nanorods were prepared using a simple hydrothermal method based on redox reactions between S2O8 2− and Mn2+ and decoration of silver nanoparticles was performed by a wet impregnation method. The as-prepared materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Electrochemical discharging capacity of Ag/MnO2, MnO2/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs), and Ag/MnO2/MWNTs electrodes were determined at 0.1C discharging rate. The results showed that utility efficiency of MnO2 was greatly enhanced when silver particles were introduced and there was strong interaction between silver nanoparticles and bulk MnO2 materials. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements were performed to investigate the discharging mechanism of the Ag/MnO2/MWNTs electrodes. For almost one hundred years, the exact role of human brain structures controlling the cardiorespiratory response to exercise (‘central command’) has been sought. Animal experiments and functional imaging studies have provided clues, but the underlying electrophysiological activity of proposed relevant neural sites in humans has never been measured. In this study, local field potentials were directly recorded in a number of ‘deep’ brain nuclei during an exercise task designed to dissociate the exercise from peripheral feedback mechanisms. Several patient groups had electrodes implanted sterotaxically for the treatment of movement disorder or chronic pain. Fast Fourier transform analysis was applied to the neurograms to identify the power of fundamental spectral frequencies. Anticipation of exercise resulted in increases in heart rate, blood pressure and ventilation. The greatest neural changes were found in the periaqueductal grey area (PAG) where anticipation of exercise was accompanied by an increase of 43% in the power of the 12–25 Hz frequency band ( P= 0.007). Exercise increased the activity by 87% compared to rest ( P= 0.006). Changes were also seen in the 60–90 Hz band when anticipation or exercise increased power by 32% ( P= 0.006) and 109% ( P < 0.001), respectively. In the subthalamic nucleus there was a reduction in the power of the beta frequency during both anticipation (7.6 ± 0.68% P= 0.001) and exercise (17.3 ± 0.96% P < 0.001), whereas an increase was seen with exercise only at higher frequencies (93 ± 1.8% P= 0.007). No significant changes were seen in the globus pallidus during anticipation of exercise. We provide direct electrophysiological evidence highlighting the PAG as an important subcortical area in the neural circuitry of the cardiorespiratory response to exercise, since stimulation of this structure is known to alter blood pressure in awake humans. Abstract: The periaqueductal grey area (PAG) in the midbrain is an important area for both cardiovascular control and modulation of pain. However, the precise relationship between pain and blood pressure is unknown. We prospectively studied 16 patients undergoing deep brain stimulation of the rostral PAG for chronic pain. Pre-operatively, post-operatively, and at 1 year, pain scores were assessed using both visual analogue scores and the McGill Pain Questionnaire. Patients were tested post-operatively to determine whether electrical stimulation of the PAG would modulate blood pressure. We found that the degree of analgesia induced by deep brain stimulation of the rostral PAG in man is related to the magnitude of reduction in arterial blood pressure. We found that this relationship is linear and is related to reduced activity of the sympathetic nervous system. Thus stimulation of the PAG may partly control pain by reducing sympathetic activity as predicted by William James over a century ago. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: To study the modulated electrical potential specifically related to the electrode–brain interface (EBI) in deep brain stimulation (DBS) under physiological condition, we quantitatively identified the physiologically modulated electrode potentials by decomposing the local field potentials (LFPs) recorded from 11 patients (18 electrodes in four different brain regions) who underwent DBS, and correlated them with simultaneously recorded physiological signals of blood pressure (BP) and respiration. Results showed that electrode potentials were modulated by BP and respiration and could be detected as a specific component of the compound LFP signals with a mean (±S.D.) amplitude of 6.9±1.7μV. The detection rate and amplitude of the modulated electrode potentials were independent from brain regions and neurological disorders. The current approach can be used to study the changes in properties of the EBI under physiological condition and to investigate the effects of the EBI on the ‘crossing’ current of either the neural signals to be recorded or the electrical pulses for neurostimulation. Abstract: Objective: To differentiate physiological from harmonic components in coherence analysis of the tremor-related neural and muscular signals by comparing power, cross-power and coherence spectra. Methods: Influences of waveform, burst-width and additional noise on generating harmonic peaks in the power, cross-power and coherence spectra were studied using simulated signals. The local field potentials (LFPs) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) and the EMGs of the contralateral forearm muscles in PD patients with rest tremor were analysed. Results: (1) Waveform had significant effect on generating harmonics; (2) noise significantly decreased the coherence values in a frequency-dependent fashion; and (3) cross-spectrum showed high resistance to harmonics. Among six examples of paired LFP–EMG signals, significant coherence appeared at the tremor frequency only, both the tremor and double tremor frequencies and the double-tremor frequency only. Conclusions: In coherence analysis of neural and muscular signals, distortion in waveform generates significant harmonic peaks in the coherence spectra and the coherence values of both physiological and harmonic components are modulated by extra noise or non-tremor related activity. Significance: The physiological or harmonic nature of a coherence peak at the double tremor frequency may be differentiated when the coherence spectra are compared with the power and in particular the cross-power spectra. Abstract: The assessment of the extent of involvement of the distal and proximal joints in a complex arm tremor is important clinically, as tremor generated around the distal and proximal arm joints can be differentially alleviated by surgical intervention to the thalamic and subthalamic targets, respectively. We observed that the tremor present in spiral drawings shows a diagonal directional preference. We hypothesized that the directional preference of tremor within spiral drawings could be related to the involvement of different arm joints. In this study, we tested this hypothesis by: (1) studying simulated tremulous drawings performed by healthy subjects with the joints selectively restrained; (2) recording surface EMGs from the forearm extensor and deltoid muscles during drawing; and (3) mathematical modelling the kinematics of the arm in 2D drawings. Our data showed that a “main diagonal” axis of orientation of the tremor along the orientation of the forearm indicates a predominantly proximal tremor driven by the shoulder, and a “cross diagonal” axis of orientation of tremor (i.e. perpendicular to the forearm) indicates that the tremor is predominantly distal and driven by the elbow or wrist. We conclude that the spiral drawing task can be used as an objective and quantitative method for differentiating the involvement of the proximal and distal arm joints in complex arm tremors. Abstract: A computational approach using wavelet transformation and image processing methods to analyze and quantify the extent of corrosion damage from the images of zinc exposure samples is described and discussed. This method contains four steps. First, a scanner was used to acquire corrosion morphology images of non-ferrous metal exposed to the atmospheric environment and the noise was then eliminated from the acquired images; in the second step, wavelet transformation was applied to decompose the improved images; then, the energies of the sub-images were extracted as feature information; finally, the relationship between the features and corrosion weight loss of samples was evaluated by regression analysis. By using the equation given by the regression analysis, the zinc atmospheric corrosion weight loss can be calculated. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Climate change is known to significantly affect vegetation development in the terrestrial system. Because Southwest China (SW) is affected by westerly winds and the South and East Asian monsoon, its climates are complex and changeable, and the time lag effect of the vegetation's response to the climate has been rarely considered, making it difficult to establish a link between the SW region's climate variables and changes in vegetation growth rate. This study revealed the characteristics of the time lag reaction and the phased changes in the response of vegetation to climate change across the entire SW and the typical climate type core area (CA) using the moving average method and multiple linear model based on the climatic information of CRU TS v. 4.02 from 1982 to 2017 together with the annual maximum (P100), upper quarter quantile (P75), median (P50), lower quarter quantile (P25), minimum (P5), and mean (Mean) from GIMMS NDVI. Generally, under the single and combined effects of temperature and precipitation, taking the time lag effect (annual and interannual delay effect) into account significantly improved the average prediction rates of temperature and precipitation, which increased by 18.48% and 25.32%, respectively. The optimal time delay was 0–4 months when the annual delay was taken into consideration, but it differed when considering the interannual delay, and the delaying effect of precipitation was more significant than that of temperature. Additionally, the response intensity of vegetation to temperature, precipitation, and their interaction was significantly more robust when the annual delay was taken into account than when it was not (p < 0.05), with corresponding multiple correlation coefficients of 0.87 and 0.91, respectively. However, the degree of response to the combined effect of individual effects and climate factors tended to decrease regardless of whether time delay effects were taken into account. A more comprehensive analysis of the effects of climate change on vegetation development dynamics suggested that the best period for synthesizing NDVI annual values might be the P25 period. Objective. To investigate the effects of quantitative nursing and psychological interventions on stress response, mental health, and prognosis in endometrial cancer patients having laparoscopic surgery. Methods. The random number table approach was used to identify and split 98 patients with endometrial cancer undergoing laparoscopic surgery at our hospital's Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital (n = 49) into observation and control groups (n = 49) from May 2020 to February 2022. Both groups received standard care in the operating room, while those in the observation group received quantitative and psychological interventions in the operating room. Both groups were compared for perioperative markers, stress indicators, coping strategies, and pain levels. Results. In terms of age, TNM stage, or pathology, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups (P > 0.05). Both the observation and control groups experienced statistically significant (P < 0.05) reductions in the perioperative markers of operation time, intraoperative blood loss, and overall hospital stay. Both groups' SAS and SDS scores were lower than they had been prior to surgery, but the observation group had lower scores than the control group, and these differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). Postsurgery, the observation group's cortisol and adrenaline levels were lower than those of the control group, and both groups' levels were higher than before surgery, with statistical significance (P < 0.05) in both groups. Neither coping style nor pain level differed significantly between the two groups before surgery (P > 0.05). Postoperatively, while yield item scores were lower and faces scores were higher than the control group, the observation group's avoidance item score was lower than the control group. All with statistical significance. There were substantial differences in NRS SCORE between observers and controls. Conclusion. After laparoscopic surgery to remove endometrial cancer, patients may benefit from the combination of quantitative nursing and psychological intervention in the operating room to alleviate postoperative anxiety and sadness and reduce stress reaction. Methylated CpG binding protein 2 (MeCP2) plays an important role in the development and normal function of the neural system. Abnormally high expression of MECP2 leads to a subtype of autism called MECP2 duplication syndrome and MECP2 is considered one of the key pathogenic genes for autism spectrum disorders. However, the effect of MECP2 overexpression on neural activity is still not fully understood. Thus, transgenic (TG) animals that abnormally overexpress MeCP2 are important disease models in research on neurological function and autism. To create an animal model with a stronger and more stable autism phenotype, this study established a human MECP2 TG rat model and evaluated its movement ability, anxiety, and social behavior through behavioral tests. The results showed that MECP2 TG rats had an abnormally increased anxiety phenotype and social deficits in terms of abnormal social approach and social novelty preference, but no movement disorder. These autism-like behavioral phenotypes suggest that human MECP2 TG rats are suitable models for studying autism as they show more severe social deficit phenotypes and without interference from movement disorders affecting other phenotypes, which is an issue for mouse models with MECP2 duplication. In addition, this study performed preliminary exploration of the influence of the human MECP2 transgene on neural oscillation stability of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), which is an important brain region for social interactions. Oscillation stability in MECP2 TG rats showed abnormal responses to social conditions. Overall, the results of this study provide a new research tool for understanding the mechanism of social impairment and treatment of autism. Although previous studies have reported correlations between alpha oscillations and the "retention" subprocess of working memory (WM), causal evidence has been limited in human neuroscience due to the lack of delicate modulation of human brain oscillations. Conventional transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is not suitable for demonstrating the causal evidence for parietal alpha oscillations in WM retention because of its inability to modulate brain oscillations within a short period (i.e., the retention subprocess). Here, we developed an online phase-corrected tACS system capable of precisely correcting for the phase differences between tACS and concurrent endogenous oscillations. This system permits the modulation of brain oscillations at the target stimulation frequency within a short stimulation period and is here applied to empirically demonstrate that parietal alpha oscillations causally relate to WM retention. Our experimental design included both in-phase and anti-phase alpha-tACS applied to participants during the retention subprocess of a modified Sternberg paradigm. Compared to in-phase alpha-tACS, anti-phase alpha-tACS decreased both WM performance and alpha activity. These findings strongly support a causal link between alpha oscillations and WM retention and illustrate the broad application prospects of phase-corrected tACS. With its capacity to correct for its phase differences relative to concurrent brain oscillations, an online phase-corrected tACS system provides the possibility to both up- and down-regulate targeted brain oscillations within a short period; using such a system, this study shows that parietal alpha oscillations exert causal impacts on working memory retention. Autophagy has been implicated in stroke. Our previous study showed that the FoxO3 transcription factor promotes autophagy after transient cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R). However, whether the Akt/FoxO3 signaling pathway plays a regulatory role in autophagy in cerebral I/R-induced oxidative stress injury is still unclear. The present study aims to investigate the effects of the Akt/FoxO3 signaling pathway on autophagy activation and neuronal injury in vitro and in vivo. By employing LY294002 or insulin to regulate the Akt/FoxO3 signaling pathway, we found that insulin pretreatment increased cell viability, decreased reactive oxygen species production, and enhanced the expression of antiapoptotic and autophagy-related proteins following H2O2 injury in HT22 cells. In addition, insulin significantly decreased neurological deficit scores and infarct volume and increased the expression of antiapoptotic and autophagy-related proteins following I/R injury in rats. However, LY294002 showed the opposite effects under these conditions. Altogether, these results indicate that Akt/FoxO3 signaling pathway activation inhibited oxidative stress-mediated cell death through activation of autophagy. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) targeting the globus pallidus internus (GPi) and subthalamic nucleus (STN) is employed for the treatment of dystonia. Pallidal low-frequency oscillations have been proposed as a pathophysiological marker for dystonia. However, the role of subthalamic oscillations and STN-GPi coupling in relation to dystonia remains unclear. We aimed to explore oscillatory activities within the STN-GPi circuit and their correlation with the severity of dystonia and efficacy achieved by DBS treatment. Local field potentials were recorded simultaneously from the STN and GPi from 13 dystonia patients. Spectral power analysis was conducted for selected frequency bands from both nuclei, while power correlation and the weighted phase lag index were used to evaluate power and phase couplings between these two nuclei, respectively. These features were incorporated into generalized linear models to assess their associations with dystonia severity and DBS efficacy. The results revealed that pallidal theta power, subthalamic beta power and subthalamic-pallidal theta phase coupling and beta power coupling all correlated with clinical severity. The model incorporating all selected features predicts empirical clinical scores and DBS-induced improvements, whereas the model relying solely on pallidal theta power failed to demonstrate significant correlations. Beyond pallidal theta power, subthalamic beta power, STN-GPi couplings in theta and beta bands, play a crucial role in understanding the pathophysiological mechanism of dystonia and developing optimal strategies for DBS. • Low-frequency and beta oscillations and couplings in the STN-GPi circuit are associated with dystonia severity. • The same set of oscillatory features within the STN-GPi circuit reflect DBS- induced improvements. • Pallidal low-frequency oscillation alone may not fully explain dystonia severity and DBS efficacy. Neural oscillations are critical to understanding the synchronisation of neural activities and their relevance to neurological disorders. For instance, the amplitude of beta oscillations in the subthalamic nucleus has gained extensive attention, as it has been found to correlate with medication status and the therapeutic effects of continuous deep brain stimulation in people with Parkinson's disease. However, the frequency stability of subthalamic nucleus beta oscillations, which has been suggested to be associated with dopaminergic information in brain states, has not been well explored. Moreover, the administration of medicine can have inverse effects on changes in frequency and amplitude. In this study, we proposed a method based on the stationary wavelet transform to quantify the amplitude and frequency stability of subthalamic nucleus beta oscillations and evaluated the method using simulation and real data for Parkinson's disease patients. The results suggest that the amplitude and frequency stability quantification has enhanced sensitivity in distinguishing pathological conditions in Parkinson's disease patients. Objectives A finite element model of the human coiled cochlea was used to model the voltage distribution due to stimulation by the individual electrodes of a cochlear implant. The scalar position of the electrode array was also varied in order to investigate its effect on the voltage distribution. Multi-electrode current focusing methods were then investigated, with the aim of increasing spatial selectivity. Methods Simultaneous current focusing is initially achieved, as in previous publications, by calculating the input currents to the 22 electrodes that best separates the voltages at these electrode positions. The benefits of this electrode focusing strategy do not, however, entirely carry over to the predicted voltage distributions at the position of the spiral ganglion cells, where excitation is believed to occur. A novel focusing strategy is then simulated, which compensates for the impedances between the currents at the electrode sites and the voltage distribution directly at the position of the spiral ganglion cells. Results The new strategy produces much better focusing at the sites of the spiral ganglion cells, as expected, but at the cost of increased current requirements. Regularization was introduced in order to reduce current requirements, which also reduced the sensitivity of the solution to uncertainties in the impedance matrix, so that improved focusing was achieved with similar current requirements to that of electrode focusing. Discussion Although such focusing strategies cannot be achieved in practice at the moment, since the responses from the electrodes to the neural sites cannot be determined with currently available recording methods, these results do support the feasibility of a more effective focusing strategy, which may provide improved spectral resolution leading to improved perception of sound. Purpose: We develop a new risk score to predict patients with stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) who have an acute intracranial hemorrhage (ICH).Method: We applied logistic regression to develop a new risk score called ICH-LR2S2. It was derived from examining a dataset of 70,540 ICH patients between 2015 and 2018 from the Chinese Stroke Center Alliance (CSCA). During the training of ICH-LR2S2, patients were randomly divided into two groups - 80% for the training set and 20% for model validation. A prospective test set was developed using 12,523 patients recruited in 2019. To further verify its effectiveness, we tested ICH-LR2S2 on an external dataset of 24,860 patients from the China National Stroke Registration Management System II (CNSR II). The performance of ICH-LR2S2 was measured by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC).Results: The incidence of SAP in the dataset was 25.52%. A 24-point ICH-LR2S2 was developed from independent predictors, including age, modified Rankin Scale, fasting blood glucose, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale admission score, Glasgow Coma Scale score, C-reactive protein, dysphagia, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, and current smoking. The results showed that ICH-LR2S2 achieved an AUC = 0.749 [95% CI 0.739-0.759], which outperforms the best baseline ICH-APS (AUC = 0.704) [95% CI 0.694-0.714]. Compared with the previous ICH risk scores, ICH-LR2S2 incorporates fasting blood glucose and C-reactive protein, improving its discriminative ability. Machine learning methods such as XGboost (AUC = 0.772) [95% CI 0.762-0.782] can further improve our prediction performance. It also performed well when further validated by the external independent cohort of patients (n = 24,860), ICH-LR2S2 AUC = 0.784 [95% CI 0.774-0.794].Conclusion: ICH-LR2S2 accurately distinguishes SAP patients based on easily available clinical features. Chlorhexidine and povidone-iodine are the most common disinfectants used in preoperative skin preparation. However, there is no consistent conclusion regarding the prevention of surgical site infection (SSI) and bacterial culture data. To assess the efficacy of chlorhexidine and povidone-iodine in the prevention of postoperative SSI and relevant bacterial data. Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis N/A N/A Literature relevant to "skin antisepsis" and "surgical site infections" was retrieved from PUBMED, Web of Science, EMBASE, CINHAL and CNKI. The incidence of SSI was the primary outcome, while the secondary outcome was bacterial data from the infected incision. All data were analyzed with Revman 5.3 and Stata Statistical Software. A total of 36 studies were identified in this study, which included 16,872 participants. This study revealed that chlorhexidine is superior to povidone-iodine in the prevention of postoperative SSI (risk ratio [RR], 0.73; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.61–0.87; p = 0.019, I2 = 39%). Further meta-regression analysis revealed that the effect of chlorhexidine was directly associated with the type of incision, but failed to differentiate between the subgroups divided according to the type of incision. With respect to bacteria colonization, the most common bacteria for chlorhexidine arm were propionibacterium's, while the most common bacteria for the iodine arm were staphylococci species. Objective: Established methods for predicting speech recognition in noise require knowledge of clean speech signals, placing limitations on their application. The study evaluates an alternative approach based on characteristics of noisy speech, specifically its sparseness as represented by the statistic kurtosis. Design: Experiments 1 and 2 involved acoustic analysis of vowel-consonant-vowel (VCV) syllables in babble noise, comparing kurtosis, glimpsing areas, and extended speech intelligibility index (ESII) of noisy speech signals with one another and with pre-existing speech recognition scores. Experiment 3 manipulated kurtosis of VCV syllables and investigated effects on speech recognition scores in normal-hearing listeners. Study sample: Pre-existing speech recognition data for Experiments 1 and 2; seven normal-hearing participants for Experiment 3. Results: Experiments 1 and 2 demonstrated that kurtosis calculated in the time-domain from noisy speech is highly correlated (r > 0.98) with established prediction models: glimpsing and ESII. All three measures predicted speech recognition scores well. The final experiment showed a clear monotonic relationship between speech recognition scores and kurtosis. Conclusions: Speech recognition performance in noise is closely related to the sparseness (kurtosis) of the noisy speech signal, at least for the types of speech and noise used here and for listeners with normal hearing. Abstract: Background: The midbrain periaqueductal grey (PAG) area is important for both pain modulation and cardiovascular control via the autonomic nervous system (ANS). While changes in blood pressure dependent upon dorsal or ventral electrode positioning have been described with PAG deep brain stimulation (DBS), little is known mechanistically about the relationships between pain and cardiovascular regulation in humans. Heart rate variability (HRV) is an established measure of cardiovascular regulation, and an index of autonomic function. Methods and results: 16 patients undergoing DBS of the rostral PAG for chronic neuropathic pain were investigated post-operatively to determine whether PAG stimulation would alter HRV, and the subjects'' perception of pain. Mean heart rate together with HRV, time and frequency domain measures, low frequency (LF) and high frequency (HF) power components of heart rate and the ratio of LF to HF were calculated before and during DBS. Ventral but not dorsal PAG DBS significantly decreased the ratio of LF to HF power (p <0.05, n =8) with HF power significantly increased. Changes in LF/HF ratio correlated significantly with subjective reporting of analgesic efficacy using a visual analogue score (VAS; γ 2 =0.36, p =0.01, n =16). Diffusion tensor imaging and probabilistic tractography of 17 normal controls'' seeding voxels from the mean ventral and dorsal PAG stimulation sites of the 16 patient cohort revealed significant differences between rostral tract projections and separate, adjacent projections to ipsilateral dorsolateral medulla. Conclusions: Ventral PAG DBS may increase parasympathetic activity to reduce pain via anatomical connections distinct from dorsal PAG DBS, which may act by sympathetic mechanisms. Abstract: Periodic rain tests have been carried out for simulating atmospheric corrosion of aeronautical aluminium alloys. A digital image preprocessing and analysis method based on wavelet transformation was used to study the corrosion morphology of aluminium alloys samples, through which an image feature parameter δ was extracted and discussed. The influences of orthogonal experiment parameters on acceleration were analyzed according to image feature parameter δ with analysis of variance (ANOVA) method, and the optimal parameters for accelerated corrosion test were also obtained. Abstract: Yttrium-doped barium cerate, BaCe0.85Y0.15O3−α (BCY15), membranes are proton-conducting electrolytes for intermediate-temperature protonic ceramic fuel cells (IT-PCFC), useful for, among other processes, co-production of power and ethylene by dehydrogenation of ethane. BCY15 membranes showed good conductivity at intermediate temperatures, 15 and 20mScm−1 at 700 and 750°C, respectively. Maximum power density was 174mWcm−2 at 700°C, with a corresponding current density of 320mAcm−2, using a C2H6,Pt/BCY15/Pt,O2 fuel cell, with a ca. 0.5mm thick membrane, producing 34% ethane conversion with 96% ethylene selectivity Comparison of performances using vertical and horizontal set-ups showed that horizontal set-ups are subject to torsional strain, causing reduced cell performance resulting from even minor leakage at the glass seal. Summary: Practice makes perfect, but the neural substrates of trial-to-trial learning in motor tasks remain unclear. There is some evidence that the basal ganglia process feedback-related information to modify learning in essentially cognitive tasks , but the evidence that these key motor structures are involved in offline feedback-related improvement of performance in motor tasks is paradoxically limited. Lesion studies in adult zebra finches suggest that the avian basal ganglia are involved in the transmission or production of an error signal during song . However, patients with Huntington''s disease, in which there is prominent basal ganglia dysfunction, are not impaired in error-dependent modulation of future trial performance . By directly recording from the subthalamic nucleus in patients with Parkinson''s disease, we demonstrate that this nucleus processes error in trial performance at short latency. Local evoked activity is greatest in response to smallest errors and influences the programming of subsequent movements. Accordingly, motor parameters are least likely to change after the greatest evoked responses so that accurately performed trials tend to precede other accurate trials. This relationship is disrupted by electrical stimulation of the nucleus at high frequency. Thus, the human subthalamic nucleus is involved in feedback-based learning. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Despite that deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the globus pallidus internus (GPi) is emerging as the favored intervention for patients with medically intractable dystonia, the pathophysiological mechanisms of dystonia are largely unclear. In eight patients with primary dystonia who were treated with bilateral chronic pallidal stimulation, we correlated symptom-related electromyogram (EMG) activity of the most affected muscles with the local field potentials (LFPs) recorded from the globus pallidus electrodes. In 5 dystonic patients with mobile involuntary movements, rhythmic EMG bursts in the contralateral muscles were coherent with the oscillations in the pallidal LFPs at the burst frequency. In contrast, no significant coherence was seen between EMG and LFPs either for the sustained activity separated out from the compound EMGs in those 5 cases, or in the EMGs in 3 other cases without mobile involuntary movements and rhythmic EMG bursts. In comparison with the resting condition, in both active and passive movements, significant modulation in the GPi LFPs was seen in the range of 8–16 Hz. The finding of significant coherence between GPi oscillations and rhythmic EMG bursts but not sustained tonic EMG activity suggests that the synchronized pallidal activity may be directly related to the rhythmic involuntary movements. In contrast, the sustained hypertonic muscle activity may be represented by less synchronized activity in the pallidum. Background: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has shown mixed results for depression treatment. The efficacies of tDCS combination therapies have not been investigated deliberately. This review aims to evaluate the clinical efficacy of tDCS as a monotherapy and in combination with medication, psychotherapy, and ECT for treating adult patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and identified the factors influencing treatment outcome measures (i.e. depression score, dropout, response, and remission rates). Methods: The systematic review was performed in PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Web of Sciences, and OpenGrey. Two authors performed independent literature screening and data extraction. The primary outcomes were the standardized mean difference (SMD) for continuous depression scores after treatment and odds ratio (OR) dropout rate; secondary outcomes included ORs for response and remission rates. Random effects models with 95% confidence intervals were employed in all outcomes. The overall effect of tDCS was investigated by meta-analysis. Sources of heterogeneity were explored via subgroup analyses, meta-regression, sensitivity analyses, and assessment of publication bias. Results: Twelve randomised, sham-controlled trials (active group: N = 251, sham group: N = 204) were included. Overall, the integrated depression score of the active group after treatment was significantly lower than that of the sham group (g = − 0.442, p = 0.017), and further analysis showed that only tDCS + medication achieved a significant lower score (g = − 0.855, p < 0.001). Moreover, this combination achieved a significantly higher response rate than sham intervention (OR = 2.7, p = 0.006), while the response rate remained unchanged for the other three therapies. Dropout and remission rates were similar in the active and sham groups for each therapy and also for the overall intervention. The meta-regression results showed that current intensity is the only predictor for the response rate. None of publication bias was identified. Conclusion: The effect size of tDCS treatment was obviously larger in depression score compared with sham stimulation. The tDCS combined selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors is the optimized therapy that is effective on depression score and response rate. tDCS monotherapy and combined psychotherapy have no significant effects. This study aims to discriminate the dynamic synchronization states from the subthalamic local field potentials and investigate their correlations with the motor symptoms in Parkinson's Disease (PD). The resting-state local field potentials of 10 patients with PD were recorded from the subthalamic nucleus. The dynamic neural states of multiple oscillations were discriminated and analyzed. The Spearman correlation was used to investigate the correlations between occurrence rate or duration of dynamic neural states and the severity of motor symptoms. The proportion of long low-beta and theta synchronized state was significantly correlated with the general motor symptom and tremor, respectively. The duration of combined low/high-beta state was significantly correlated with rigidity, and the duration of combined alpha/high-beta state was significantly correlated with bradykinesia. This study provides evidence that motor symptoms are associated with the neural states coded with multiple oscillations in PD. This study may advance the understanding of the neurophysiological mechanisms of the motor symptoms and provide potential biomarkers for closed-loop deep brain stimulation in PD. Autophagy has been implicated in neurodegenerative diseases. Forkhead box O3 (FoxO3) transcription factors promote autophagy in heart and inhibit oxidative damage. Here we investigate the role of FoxO3 transcription factors in regulating autophagy after oxidative stress injury in immortalized mouse hippocampal cell line (HT22). The present study confirms that hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) injury could induce autophagy and FoxO3 activation in HT22 cells. In addition, overexpression of FoxO3 enhanced H2O2-induced autophagy activation and suppressed neuronal cell damage, while knockdown of FoxO3 reduced H2O2-induced autophagy activation and exacerbated neuronal cell injury. Inhibition of autophagy by 3-methyladenine (3-MA) resulted in reduced cell viability, increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), promoted nuclear condensation, and decreased expression of antiapoptotic and autophagy-related proteins, indicating that autophagy may have protective effects on H2O2-induced injury in HT22 cells. Moreover, overexpression of FoxO3 prevented exacerbation of brain damage induced by 3-MA. Taken together, these results show that activation of FoxO3 could induce autophagy and inhibit H2O2-induced damage in HT22 cells. Background: Subcortical structures, including the basal ganglia, have been proposed to be crucial for arousal, consciousness, and behavioural responsiveness. How the basal ganglia contribute to the loss and recovery of consciousness during anaesthesia has, however, not yet been well characterised.Methods: Twelve patients with advanced Parkinson's disease, who were undergoing deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrode implantation in the subthalamic nucleus (STN), were included in this study. Local field potentials (LFPs) were recorded from the DBS electrodes and EEG was recorded from the scalp during induction of general anaesthesia (with propofol and sufentanil) and during tracheal intubation. Neural signatures of loss of consciousness and of the expected arousal during intubation were sought in the STN and EEG recordings.Results: Propofol-sufentanil anaesthesia resulted in power increases in delta, theta, and alpha frequencies, and broadband power decreases in higher frequencies in both STN and frontal cortical areas. This was accompanied by increased STN-frontal cortical coherence only in the alpha frequency band (119 [68]%; P=0.0049). We observed temporal activity changes in STN after tracheal intubation, including power increases in high-beta (22-40 Hz) frequency (98 [123]%; P=0.0064) and changes in the power-law exponent in the power spectra at lower frequencies (2-80 Hz), which were not observed in the frontal cortex. During anaesthesia, the dynamic changes in the high-gamma power in STN LFPs correlated with the power-law exponent in the power spectra at lower frequencies (2-80 Hz).Conclusions: Apart from similar activity changes in both STN and cortex associated with anaesthesia-induced unresponsiveness, we observed specific neuronal activity changes in the STN in response to the anaesthesia and tracheal intubation. We also show that the power-law exponent in the power spectra in the STN was modulated by tracheal intubation in anaesthesia. Understanding the functional dynamics of neural oscillations in the sensory thalamus is essential for elucidating the perception and modulation of neuropathic pain. Local field potentials were recorded from the sensory thalamus of twelve neuropathic pain patients. Single and combinational neural states were defined by the activity state of a single or paired oscillations. Relationships between the duration or occurrence rate of neural state and pre‐operative pain level or pain relief induced by deep brain stimulation were evaluated. Results showed that the occurrence rate of the single neural state of low‐beta oscillation was significantly correlated with pain relief. The duration and occurrence rate of combinational neural states of the paired low‐beta with delta, theta, alpha, high‐beta or low‐gamma oscillations were more significantly correlated with pain relief than the single neural states. Moreover, these significant combinational neural states formed a local oscillatory network with low‐beta oscillation as a key node. The results also showed correlations between measures of combinational neural states and subjective pain level as well. The duration of combinational neural states of paired alpha with delta or theta oscillations and the occurrence rate of neural states of the paired delta with low‐beta or low‐gamma oscillations were significantly correlated with pre‐operative pain level. In conclusion, this study revealed that the integration of oscillations and the functional dynamics of neural states were differentially involved in modulation and perception of neuropathic pain. Purpose: Dysautonomia can be a debilitating feature of Parkinson disease (PD). Pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) stimulation may improve gait disorders in PD, and may also result in changes in autonomic performance. Methods: To determine whether pedunculopontine nucleus stimulation improves cardiovascular responses to autonomic challenges of postural tilt and Valsalva manoeuver, eight patients with pedunculopontine nucleus deep brain stimulation were recruited to the study; two were excluded for technical reasons during testing. Participants underwent head up tilt and Valsalva manoeuver with stimulation turned ON and OFF. Continuous blood pressure and ECG waveforms were recorded during these tests. In a single patient, local field potential activity was recorded from the implanted electrode during tilt. Results: The fall in systolic blood pressure after tilt was significantly smaller with stimulation ON (mean − 8.3% versus − 17.2%, p = 0.044). Valsalva ratio increased with stimulation from median 1.15 OFF to 1.20 ON (p = 0.028). Baroreflex sensitivity increased during Valsalva compared to rest with stimulation ON versus OFF (p = 0.028). The increase in baroreflex sensitivity correlated significantly with the mean depth of PPN stimulating electrode contacts. This accounted for 89% of its variance (r = 0.943, p = 0.005). Conclusion: PPN stimulation can modulate the cardiovascular system in patients with PD. In this study, it reduced the postural fall in systolic blood pressure during head-up tilt and improved the cardiovascular response during Valsalva, presumably by altering the neural control of baroreflex activation. Aim: Autophagy was activated after cerebral ischemia reperfusion (I/R) injury. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying regulation of autophagy in cerebral I/R injury were not completely understood. Studies reported that Forked-box class O (FoxO) transcription factors involved in autophagy and might be the regulator of autophagy in multiple cells. In this study, we investigated the effects of FoxO3 on regulating autophagy after cerebral I/R injury. Materials and methods: Rats were subjected to MCAO for 2 h and reperfusion for different times, western blot was used to examine the expression of p-FoxO3, FoxO3 and the autophagic marker LC3 and Beclin-1 in penumbral region. Then rats were injected with WT-FoxO3 or TM-FoxO3 adenovirus by lateral cerebral ventricle to increase the function of FoxO3, western blot was used to examine the expression of LC3 and Beclin-1 in penumbral region. TTC and HE staining were used to evaluate the effects of increased FoxO3 activation on I/R induced brain damage. Results: Our studies showed that I/R injury resulted in induction of autophagy in penumbral brain tissue with concomitant dephosphorylation of FoxO3, consistent with increased activity of nuclear FoxO3 transcription factor. Increased FoxO3 activation led to autophagy significantly increased and had a protective effects on I/R injury. Conclusion: These data revealed an important role of FoxO3 in regulating autophagy in brain, and provided a new approach for further prevention and treatment of cerebral ischemia. The balance between neural oscillations provides valuable insights into the organisation of neural oscillations related to brain states, which may play important roles in dystonia. We aim to investigate the relationship of the balance in the globus pallidus internus (GPi) with the dystonic severity under different muscular contraction conditions. Twenty-one patients with dystonia were recruited. All of them underwent bilateral GPi implantation, and local field potentials (LFPs) from the GPi were recorded via simultaneous surface electromyography. The power spectral ratio between neural oscillations was computed as the measure of neural balance. This ratio was calculated under high and low dystonic muscular contraction conditions, and its correlation with the dystonic severity was assessed using clinical scores. The power spectral of the pallidal LFPs peaked in the theta and alpha bands. Within participant comparison showed that the power spectral of the theta oscillations significantly increased during high muscle contraction compared with that during low contraction. The power spectral ratios between the theta and alpha, theta and low beta, and theta and high gamma oscillations were significantly higher during high contraction than during low contraction. The total score and motor score were associated with the power spectral ratio between the low and high beta oscillations, which was correlated with the dystonic severity both during high and low contractions. The power spectral ratios between the low beta and low gamma and between the low beta and high gamma oscillations showed a significantly positive correlation with the total score during both high and low contractions; a correlation with the motor scale score was found only during high contraction. Meanwhile, the power spectral ratio between the theta and alpha oscillations during low contraction showed a significantly negative correlation with the total score. The power spectral ratios between the alpha and high beta, alpha and low gamma, and alpha and high gamma oscillations were significantly correlated with the dystonic severity only during low contraction. The balance between neural oscillations, as quantified by the power ratio between specific frequency bands, differed between the high and low muscular contraction conditions and was correlated with the dystonic severity. Regnase-1 is not only a key component in maintaining intracellular homeostasis but also a critical negative regulator in preventing autoimmune diseases and cancer development. To keep homeostatic state, Regnase-1 has to be maintained at a desired level in multiple cell types. However, the molecular mechanism of keeping a certain transcriptional level of Reganase-1 is largely unknown. In this study, we found a super-enhancer (Reg-1-SE) around Regnase-1 gene is able to control the homeostatic expression of Regnase-1. Functional inhibition of super-enhancers through BRD4 inhibitors or genetic silence of key components such as BRD4 and MED1 significantly downregulates Regnase-1 expression at multiple cell types. Consistently, treatment of JQ1 or I-BET-762 dramatically decreases the protein level of Regnase-1. By analyzing Regnase-1 gene, the distribution of H3K27Ac is highly enriched at a 8 kb DNA region around the second intron. Several DNA elements at the second intron are highly conserved between different species. Deletion of the second intron by CRISPR-Cas9 technology significantly reduces the expression of Regnase-1. JQ1 or I-BET-762 failed to further downregulate the expression of Regnase-1 in cells without the second intron. Our result reveals a novel molecular mechanism by which a super-enhancer around the second intron regulates the expression of Regnase-1, and in turn maintains a desired level of Regnase-1. Objectives The nucleus accumbens (NAc) is known to regulate the motivation and underlie addictive behaviors, and the anterior limb of the internal capsule (ALIC) is involved in several psychiatric disorders. Our study aimed to explore the functions of NAc and ALIC electrophysiologically. Methods The local field potentials (LFPs) of the NAc and ALIC were recorded from 7 heroin addicts treated with deep brain stimulation. Correlation analysis was made between LFP powers in various frequency bands and the subjects’ neuropsychological test scores; coherence was calculated for the LFPs in NAc and ALIC. Results Both the NAc and ALIC exhibited prominent theta and alpha frequency band activity in the LFP power spectra. Additionally, a distinct beta band peak was detected in the power spectra of ALIC LFPs, which may represent the activity of striatal bridge cells. There was a significant negative correlation between the power of the theta frequency band of ALIC LFPs and visual analogue scale (VAS) scores indicative of cravings (Spearman’s ρ  = −0.758, P  = 0.002), and a significant positive correlation was found between the power of the alpha frequency band of NAc LFPs and subjects’ scores on the Hamilton depression inventory ( ρ  = 0.727, P  = 0.005). LFPs of the NAc and ALIC exhibited higher coherence values in the theta and alpha frequency bands. Conclusions The results suggest that theta power in the ALIC/dorsal striatum and alpha power in the NAc may be associated with drug cravings and depressive symptoms, respectively, in heroin addicts. For these subjects, the neural activities in the dorsal and ventral striatum were mainly coordinated within the low-frequency band. Significance The study illustrates the neurophysiologic characteristics of heroin addiction and its comorbidities, providing a potential theoretical basis for optimizing deep brain stimulation (DBS) therapy. Objective This study aims to use the activities recorded directly from the deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrode to address the focality and distinct nature of the local field potential (LFP) activities of different frequency. Methods Pre-operative and intra-operative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were acquired from patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) who underwent DBS in the subthalamic nucleus and intra-operative LFP recording at rest and during cued movements. Images were reconstructed and 3-D visualized using Lead-DBS® toolbox to determine the coordinates of contact. The resting spectral power and movement-related power modulation of LFP oscillations were estimated. Results Both subthalamic LFP activity recorded at rest and its modulation by movement had focal maxima in the alpha, beta and gamma bands. The spatial distribution of alpha band activity and its modulation was significantly different to that in the beta band. Moreover, there were significant differences in the scale and timing of movement related modulation across the frequency bands. Conclusion Subthalamic LFP activities within specific frequency bands can be distinguished by spatial topography and pattern of movement related modulation. Significance Assessment of the frequency, focality and pattern of movement related modulation of subthalamic LFPs reveals a heterogeneity of neural population activity in this region. Objective Understanding the function of sensory thalamic neural activity is essential for developing and improving interventions for neuropathic pain. However, there is a lack of investigation of the relationship between sensory thalamic oscillations and pain relief in patients with neuropathic pain. This study aims to identify the oscillatory neural characteristics correlated with pain relief induced by deep brain stimulation (DBS), and develop a quantitative model to predict pain relief by integrating characteristic measures of the neural oscillations. Approach Measures of sensory thalamic local field potentials (LFPs) in thirteen patients with neuropathic pain were screened in three dimensional feature space according to the rhythm, balancing, and coupling neural behaviours, and correlated with pain relief. An integrated approach based on principal component analysis (PCA) and multiple regression analysis is proposed to integrate the multiple measures and provide a predictive model. Main results This study reveals distinct thalamic rhythms of theta, alpha, high beta and high gamma oscillations correlating with pain relief. The balancing and coupling measures between these neural oscillations were also significantly correlated with pain relief. Objectives Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) has been successfully used to treat both Parkinson's disease (PD) and dystonia. Local field potentials (LFPs) recorded from the STN of PD patients demonstrate prominent beta frequency band activity. It is unclear whether such activity occurs in the STN in dystonia, and, if not, whether dystonia has another distinctive neural population activity in the STN. Methods Twelve patients with PD, and eight patients with dystonia underwent DBS electrode implantation targeting the STN. Seven dystonia patients were off medication and one was on aripiprazole and clonazepam. LFPs were recorded from the DBS electrodes in PD in the on/off medication states and in dystonia. Power spectra and temporal dynamics measured by the with Lempel-Ziv complexity of the LFPs were compared among these states. Results Normalised power spectra and Lempel-Ziv complexity of subthalamic LFPs differed between dystonia off and PD on/off, and between PD off and on over the low frequency, beta and high gamma bands. Patients with dystonia and off medication had lower beta power but higher low frequency and high gamma power than PD. Spectral power in the low beta frequency (11–20 Hz) range was attenuated in medicated PD. Conclusion The results suggest that dystonia and PD are characterized by different patterns of oscillatory activities even within the same nucleus, and exaggerated beta activity may relate to hypo-dopaminergic status. Objective To investigate the link between neuronal activity recorded from the sensory thalamus and periventricular gray/periaqueductal gray (PVAG) and pain relief by deep brain stimulation (DBS). Methods Local field potentials (LFPs) were recorded from the sensory thalamus and PVAG post-operatively from ten patients with neuropathic pain. The LFPs were quantified using spectral and time–frequency analysis, the relationship between the LFPs and pain relief was quantified with nonlinear correlation analysis. Results The theta oscillations of both sensory thalamus and PVAG correlated inversely with pain relief. The high beta oscillations in the sensory thalamus and the alpha oscillations in the PVAG correlated positively with pain relief. Moreover, the ratio of high-power duration to low-power duration of theta band activity in the sensory thalamus and PVAG correlated inversely with pain relief. The duration ratio at the high beta band in the sensory thalamus correlated positively with pain relief. Conclusions Our results reveal distinct neuronal oscillations at the theta, alpha, and beta frequencies correlating with pain relief by DBS. Background Multiple oscillations emerging from the same neuronal substrate serve to construct a local oscillatory network. The network usually exhibits complex behaviors of rhythmic, balancing and coupling between the oscillations, and the quantification of these behaviors would provide valuable insight into organization of the local network related to brain states. New method An integrated approach to quantify rhythmic, balancing and coupling neural behaviors based upon power spectral analysis, power ratio analysis and cross-frequency power coupling analysis was presented. Deep brain local field potentials (LFPs) were recorded from the thalamus of patients with neuropathic pain and dystonic tremor. t -Test was applied to assess the difference between the two patient groups. Results The rhythmic behavior measured by power spectral analysis showed significant power spectrum difference in the high beta band between the two patient groups. The balancing behavior measured by power ratio analysis showed significant power ratio differences at high beta band to 8–20 Hz, and 30–40 Hz to high beta band between the patient groups. The coupling behavior measured by cross-frequency power coupling analysis showed power coupling differences at (theta band, high beta band) and (45–55 Hz, 70–80 Hz) between the patient groups. Comparison with existing method The study provides a strategy for studying the brain states in a multi-dimensional behavior space and a framework to screen quantitative characteristics for biomarkers related to diseases or nuclei. Neuronal activity within and across the cortex and basal ganglia is pathologically synchronized, particularly at ∼ 20 Hz in patients with Parkinsons disease. Defining how activities in spatially distributed brain regions overtly synchronize in narrow frequency bands is critical for understanding disease processes like Parkinsons disease. To address this, we studied cortical responses to electrical stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) at various frequencies between 5 and 30 Hz in two cohorts of eight patients with Parkinsons disease from two different surgical centres. We found that evoked activity consisted of a series of diminishing waves with a peak latency of 21 ms for the first wave in the series. The cortical evoked potentials (cEPs) averaged in each group were well fitted by a damped oscillator function (r ≥0.9, P < 0.00001). Fits suggested that the natural frequency of the subthalamo-cortical circuit was around 20 Hz. When the system was forced at this frequency by stimulation of the STN at 20 Hz, the undamped amplitude of the modelled cortical response increased relative to that with 5 Hz stimulation in both groups (P ≤ 0.005), consistent with resonance. Restoration of dopaminergic input by treatment with levodopa increased the damping of oscillatory activity (as measured by the modelled damping factor) in both patient groups (P ≤0.001). The increased damping would tend to limit resonance, as confirmed in simulations. Our results show that the basal ganglia–cortical network involving the STN has a tendency to resonate at ∼ 20 Hz in Parkinsonian patients. This resonance phenomenon may underlie the propagation and amplification of activities synchronized around this frequency. Abstract: This study aimed to improve the accuracy and robustness of a real-time assistive human machine interface system by classifying between the controlled movements related tongue-movement ear pressure (TMEP) signals and the interfering signals. The controlled movement TMEP signals were collected during left, right, up, down, flicking and pushing tongue motions. The TMEP signals were processed and classified using detection, segmentation, feature extraction and classification. The segmented signals were decomposed into the time-scale domain using a wavelet packet transform. The variance of the wavelet packet coefficients and its ratio between low-to-high scales were defined as features and the intended tongue movement commands and interfering signals were classified using both a Bayesian and support vector machine (SVM) classifiers for comparison. The average classification accuracy for discriminating between the controlled movements and the interfering signals achieved 97.8% (Bayesian) and 98.5% (SVM). The classifiers were robust remaining at a similar performance level when generalised interferences from all subjects were used. It was shown that the Bayesian classifier performed better than the SVM in a real-time environment. The approach of combining the Bayesian classifier and the wavelet packet transform provides a robust and efficient method for a real-time assistive human machine interface based on tongue-movement ear pressure signals.
