Citizen science, a growing domain that allows public participation in scientific research, plays an increasingly significant role in formal education. Its potential to foster scientific literacy, address environmental issues, and promote sustainability is widely acknowledged. Drawing on the concept mapping approach, this study aims to investigate the factors that could motivate students' participation in a university-based citizen science project. This methodology enabled substantive insights, driving focused discussions and yielding rich, consolidated outcomes that reflect a strong consensus. These factors encompass the importance of real-world connections, experiential learning, institutional support, autonomy, and global consciousness, extending existing theoretical frameworks. The results illuminate the transformative potential of school-based citizen science and offer valuable insights for designing engaging educational initiatives and strategically allocating resources. English speaking has been seen as a challenge for many English as a foreign language (EFL) learners, since they have limited chances to practice English-speaking skills. Therefore, it is essential to provide learners with adequate English-speaking contexts. To address this issue, this study integrated virtual reality (VR) into English speaking classes and aimed to explore the effects of VR on English oral proficiency, speaking anxiety, and emotions, as well as students' perceptions. Forty university students from two classes were assigned as an experimental group and a control group. The students in the experimental group practiced English speaking with the VR tools, while those in the control group used PowerPoint. Data analysis revealed conflicting results. While ANCOVAs disclosed no significant difference between the two groups regarding their post-intervention oral proficiency, speaking anxiety, and emotions, qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews indicated that the independent VR environment could reduce their speaking anxiety, and VR tools could act as effective tools to practice speaking before formal situations in real life. Furthermore, three themes characterized students' perceptions: "training simulation," "learning without time or space limitations," and "providing a safe learning environment." The development of immune cell engagers (ICEs) can be limited by logistical and functional restrictions associated with fusion protein designs, thus limiting immune cell recruitment to solid tumors. Herein, a high affinity superantigen‐based multivalent ICE is developed for simultaneous activation and recruitment of NK and T cells for tumor treatment. Yeast library‐based directed evolution is adopted to identify superantigen variants possessing enhanced binding affinity to immunoreceptors expressed on human T cells and NK cells. High‐affinity superantigens exhibiting improved immune‐stimulatory activities are then incorporated into a superantigen‐based tri‐functional yeast‐display‐enhanced multivalent immune cell engager (STYMIE), which is functionalized with a nanobody, a Neo‐2/15 cytokine, and an Fc domain for tumor targeting, immune stimulation, and prolonged circulation, respectively. Intravenous administration of STYMIE enhances NK and T cell recruitment into solid tumors, leading to enhanced inhibition in multiple tumor models. Compared to Western populations, Chinese and Asians possess distinct genetics, lifestyles, and dietary habits. They tend to have shorter stature, lower Body Mass Index (BMI), and higher body fat percentages than Western populations. The aim of this study was to compare disparities in maternal–fetal outcomes by combining pre-pregnancy BMI and gestational weight gain (GWG) based on distinct US and Chinese guidelines. A total of 2,271 pregnant women who received perinatal care at Fooyin University Hospital from 2016 to 2021 were included. Logistic regression analysis categorized women into twelve groups based on the two criteria to explore the relationships between BMI and GWG, and maternal–fetal outcomes. Among the subjects, only 23.2% and 21.8% women had a normal weight BMI and adequate GWG, based on US and Chinese criteria, respectively. As BMI and GWG increase, the likelihood of developing complications such as gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension or preeclampsia, Cesarean section, and Large for Gestational Age also rises. Conversely, underweight women with excessive GWG exhibited lower risk of preterm birth either by US or Chinese guidelines. Two criteria exhibited similar odds for investigated outcomes, except for gestational hypertension or preeclampsia. Women had more than double the odds of developing gestational hypertension or preeclampsia when using US criteria compared to Chinese criteria. Therefore, it is essential for Asian, especially Chinese women, to be aware of the differences in adverse outcomes such as gestational hypertension or preeclampsia when using US criteria. Summary: Determining the endotypes of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has potential implications for precision interventions. Here we assessed whether continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment outcomes differ across endotypic subgroups. We conducted a retrospective analysis of data obtained from 225 patients with moderate‐to‐severe OSA from a single sleep centre. Polysomnographic and CPAP titration study data were collected between May 2020 and January 2022. One‐month CPAP treatment adherence was followed. Obstructive sleep apnea endotypes, namely arousal threshold, collapsibility, loop gain, and upper airway gain were estimated from polysomnography and dichotomised as high versus low. We examined associations between endotypic subgroups and (1) optimal CPAP titration pressure, (2) CPAP‐related improvements in sleep architecture (proportions of slow‐wave and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep), and (3) CPAP adherence. We observed that patients with high collapsibility required a higher CPAP pressure than those with low collapsibility (∆ = 0.4 cmH2O, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.3–1.7). A larger increase in slow‐wave sleep and in REM sleep proportions after CPAP treatment were observed in patients with a high arousal threshold, high collapsibility, high loop gain, or high upper airway gain than in those with low levels of endotypes. High loop gain and high collapsibility were independently associated with longer CPAP use hours per night (∆ = 0.6 h, 95% CI = 0.2–1.5 and ∆ = 0.3 h, 95% CI = 0.03–1.5, respectively). In conclusion, different endotypic subgroups of OSA exhibit a difference in outcomes of CPAP treatment. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been found to have a greater impact on individuals with pre-existing psychiatric disorders. However, the underlying reasons for this increased risk have yet to be determined. This study aims to investigate the potential factors contributing poor outcomes among COVID-19 patients with psychiatric disorders, including delayed diagnosis of infection, vaccination rates, immune response, and the use of psychotropic medications. This retrospective cohort study analyzed medical records of 15,783 adult patients who were diagnosed with COVID-19 infection by positive PCR tests between January and September 2022 at a single medical center. We identified psychiatric diagnoses using ICD-9 diagnostic codes from the preceding 3 years before COVID infection. Primary outcome was in-hospital mortality and secondary outcomes were severe illness requiring intensive care or mechanical ventilation, and hospitalization within 45 days after a positive COVID-19 test. We compared the rates of outcomes, viral load, vaccination status at the time of positive test, psychotropic medications prescription within 90 days prior, antiviral medication use, and blood inflammation markers between patients with and without psychiatric disorders. The Cox proportional hazard model was used to examine the association of psychiatric diagnoses, vaccination status, and psychotropic medication prescription with poor outcomes. Patients with psychiatric disorders demonstrated higher rates of severe illness (10.4% v.s. 7.1%) and hospitalization (16.4% vs. 11.3%), as well as a shorter duration to in-hospital mortality (6 vs. 12.5 days) compared to non-psychiatric patients. Psychiatric patients had higher vaccination rates and lower levels of inflammatory markers than non-psychiatric patients. Antipsychotic medication use was associated with in-hospital mortality (hazard ratio [HR] = 4.79, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.23–18.7), while being unvaccinated was associated with hospitalization (HR = 1.81, 95% CI = 1.29 to 2.54) and severe illness (HR = 3.23, 95% CI = 1.95 to 5.34) among patients with psychiatric disorders. Sedatives prescription was associated with all poor outcomes in general patients. Considering the narrow time window between a positive COVID-19 test and poor outcomes, healthcare providers should undertake close monitoring of patients with preexisting psychiatric disorders during the initial days after a positive PCR test. The study aimed to identify the factors associated with the 6-min walk distance (6MWD) and to provide reference values for the 6MWD in individuals with schizophrenia (SCZ) in Taiwan. A proportional stratified sampling method was utilized based on distribution of gender, age and body mass index (BMI) at the study hospital. The 6-minute walk test was conducted according to the American Thoracic Society protocol. A total of 237 patients with SCZ completed the 6-minute walk test. The 6MWD was significantly associated with age, height, weight, and length of the onset of SCZ. Stepwise linear regression revealed that height and age were significant determinants of 6MWD. The reference values for males and females at different age groups were determined. Notably, females over 60 walked substantially shorter than the age younger than 60. Height and age were the main predictors for 6MWD among people with SCZ in Taiwan. The established reference values can be used to identify those at risk of poor cardiorespiratory fitness and as a target outcome during exercise programs in psychiatric rehabilitation. Our results highlight that older females with SCZ may be a priority group to target with exercise interventions to mitigate the faster decline in cardiorespiratory fitness. Radiotherapy (RT) is an important modality for laryngeal cancer treatment to preserve laryngeal function. During beam delivery, laryngeal motion remains uncontrollable and may compromise tumor-targeting efficacy. We aimed to examine real-time laryngeal motion by developing a surface depth-sensing technique with preliminary testing during RT-based treatment of patients with laryngeal cancer. A surface depth-sensing (SDS) camera was set up and integrated into RT simulation procedures. By recording the natural swallowing of patients, SDS calculation was performed using the Pose Estimation Model and deep neural network technique. Seven male patients with laryngeal cancer were enrolled in this prospective study. The calculated motion distances of the laryngeal prominence (mean ± standard deviation) were 1.6 ± 0.8 mm, 21.4 ± 5.1 mm, 6.4 ± 3.3 mm, and 22.7 ± 4.9 mm in the left–right, cranio–caudal, and anterior–posterior directions and for the spatial displacement, respectively. The calculated differences in the 3D margins for generating the planning tumor volume by senior physicians with and without SDS data were −0.7 ± 1.0 mm (−18%), 11.3 ± 6.8 mm (235%), and 1.8 ± 2.6 mm (45%) in the left–right, cranio–caudal, and anterior–posterior directions, respectively. Developing design concepts is crucial in architectural engineering education, yet helping students to develop these concepts is a challenging task. Despite previous research exploring design concepts, statistical analysis is scarce to evaluate their effectiveness. This study used the body movement methods from existing literature, combined with photography to transform the 3D body movements into 2D drawings, serving as the basis for developing designs (sources of design concept). A total of 51 students participated in the course. In the end, the hands-on process and learning outcomes were investigated objectively through statistical analysis. The operational model of the course can act as the reference for future hands-on education and design concept development. The specific results are: (1) body movements and material (board) limitation can bring about inspiration for the initial development of the design; (2) the images produced from the adopted photography technique can effectively assist students in developing design concepts; (3) the material chosen for model making should be similar to that used in the subsequent hands-on work as much as possible to better realize the concept; and (4) a variety of unexpected functional usability and esthetic shapes can be created through post-production reflection. Background: Anti−vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) treatment has been associated with an increased risk of thromboembolic events. Therefore, the use of anti−VEGFs for patients with colorectal cancers (CRC) has raised concerns about the potential risk of retinal vein occlusion (RVO), an ocular disease caused by embolism or venous stasis. This study aims to evaluate the risk of RVO in patients with CRC treated with anti−VEGFs. Method: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the Taiwan Cancer Registry and National Health Insurance Database. The study cohort comprised patients newly diagnosed with CRC between 2011 and 2017, who received anti-VEGF treatment. For each patient in the study cohort, a control group comprising four patients newly diagnosed with CRC, but not receiving anti-VEGF treatment, was randomly selected. A washout period of 12 months was implemented to identify new cases. The index date was defined as the date of the first prescription of anti-VEGF drugs. The study outcome was the incidence of RVO, as identified by ICD-9-CM (362.35 and 362.36) or ICD-10-CM codes (H3481 and H3483). Patients were followed from their index date until the occurrence of RVO, death or the end of the study period. Covariates, including patients' age at index date, sex, calendar year of CRC diagnosis, stage of CRC and comorbidities related to RVO, were included. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) with adjustments for all covariates to compare the risk of RVO between the anti-VEGF and control groups. Results: We recruited 6285 patients in the anti-VEGF group and 37,250 patients in the control group, with mean ages of 59.49 ± 12.11 and 63.88 ± 13.17 years, respectively. The incidence rates were 1.06 per 1000 person-years for the anti-VEGF group, and 0.63 per 1000 person-years for the controls. There was no statistically significant difference in RVO risk between the anti-VEGF and control groups (HR: 2.21, 95% CI: 0.87–5.61). Conclusion: Our results indicated no association between use of anti-VEGF and occurrence of RVO among CRC patients, although the crude incidence rate of RVO was higher in patients receiving anti-VEGF, compared to control patients. Neuroblastoma (NBL) is one of the most common extracranial neoplasms in children. Mortality is often attributed to treatmentrelated adverse events, sepsis secondary to immunocompromised status, and multi-organ failure resulting from advanced illness. Cases of NBL initially presenting with life-threatening events are rare. N -methyl- d -aspartate (NMDA) receptors, activated by glutamate, play a crucial role in learning and memory. Memantine (MEM), a non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist, is currently prescribed for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease or dementia, which meanwhile simultaneously promotes a need to clarify its potential pro-cognitive effects that exist in normal healthy individuals. However, the neurobehavioral mechanisms underlying the cognitive improvement by MEM in normal individuals remain to be elucidated. This study aimed to assess the effects of MEM on working memory, measured by a discrete paired-trial delay alternation task in a T-maze in normal male rats. The impacts of MEM were hypothesized to vary depending on different baseline levels of working memory performance. Neurochemical examination of the levels of calcium/calmodulin-dependent kinase 2 (CaMKII) and NMDA receptor subunits within five targeted brain regions was conducted after behavioral tests. The results showed that acute administration of MEM enhanced working memory performance, with 2.5, 5.0, and 10 mg/kg doses increasing task accuracy compared to the vehicle, particularly in low performers. Neurochemically, the protein expression of CaMKII in the amygdala and that of the glutamate (Glu) N2A subunit in the dorsal striatum were greater in the low-performance group than in the high-performance group. Additionally, the protein expression of the GluN2A subunit in the dorsal striatum was negatively associated with task performance at baseline. The expression of GluN1 and GluN2B in the nucleus accumbens was negatively associated with task performance in the retest three weeks after drug treatment. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are widely used in modern lighting and electronic devices, including smartphones, computer monitors, tablets, televisions, and vehicle lights. Blue light (BL) hazards to eye health have received increasing attention because white LED bulbs emit higher levels of BL than traditional lighting sources. At wavelengths of 400–500 nm, BL is characterized by its high energy and risks associated with prolonged exposure, which may lead to photochemical damage and morphological alterations in the retina. Recent research has revealed that the harmful effects of BL are intricately linked to light intensity and exposure frequency, with mechanisms involving the overproduction of reactive oxygen species through photooxidative processes. This growing body of knowledge deepens our understanding of photodamage and opens avenues for exploring protective strategies for our eyes. Although current clinical trials assessing the safety of BL exposure remain limited, the development of experimental models that mimic physiological conditions has revealed BL toxicity. This review categorizes and evaluates BL-induced retinopathy in vivo , providing a comprehensive overview of the associated experimental parameters, including photosensitive fluorophores, light wavelength, illuminance, irradiance, exposure duration, animal strains, and their unique lesion patterns. Based on the concept of "governance through scientism", this article aims to reveal the tacit practices of the institutional culture of scientism among Taiwan Biobank's elite scientists, whose imaginaries have shaped the dominance of a deficit model of the public in dealing with public controversy and establishing regulatory mechanisms. Examining three periods of ELSI controversies from 2000 to 2021, we identify three types of scientific imaginaries of publics, namely the silent public (2000–2004), the anti-science public (2005–2010), and the EGC as the lawful public supervisory body (2010–2021). In 2010, the Human Biobank Management Act (HBMA) was passed in Taiwan as a solution to public controversy and as a strategy to bypass public engagement. Aim: To investigate the relationship between abnormal glucose tolerance during pregnancy and maternal‐fetal outcomes, after categorizing women into groups with different levels of gestational abnormal glucose tolerance. Methods: A total of 1858 pregnant women who received two‐step screening for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) at Fooyin University Hospital were categorized into four groups, according to their glucose abnormalities, and their maternal‐fetal outcomes were investigated from October 2015 to June 2020. Results: Among the groups having different levels of abnormal glucose tolerance, there were significant differences and trends in mother's age, currently married status, and prepregnancy overweight or obesity, incidences of cesarean section, preterm, and gestational hypertension or preeclampsia; and with respect to neonatal incidence of large for gestational age (LGA), average weight, and average height (p < 0.05). After adjusting for potential factors, there were higher incidences of cesarean section (AOR = 1.71; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.12–2.61), preterm (AOR = 2.20; 95% CI: 1.23–3.91), neonatal LGA (AOR = 4.94; 95% CI: 2.87–8.51), and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission (AOR = 2.66; 95% CI: 1.14–6.24) in the GDM group, relative to the control group. Furthermore, the women in the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT)‐1 group had a higher incidence of neonatal LGA when compared with the women in the normal group (AOR = 2.31; 95% CI: 1.02–5.33). Conclusions: We found higher incidences of cesarean section, preterm, and neonatal LGA and NICU admission in the GDM women, and a higher incidence of neonatal LGA in the OGTT‐1 group, relative to control group. Simple Summary: Master transcription factors regulate essential developmental processes and cellular maintenance that characterize cell identity. Many of them also serve as oncogenes when aberrantly expressed or activated. IRF4 is one of prime examples of oncogenic master transcription factors that has been implicated in various mature lymphoid neoplasms. IRF4 forms unique regulatory circuits and induces oncogenic transcription programs through the interactions with upstream pathways and binding partners. IRF4 is a transcription factor in the interferon regulatory factor (IRF) family. Since the discovery of this gene, various research fields including immunology and oncology have highlighted the unique characteristics and the importance of IRF4 in several biological processes that distinguish it from other IRF family members. In normal lymphocyte development and immunity, IRF4 mediates critical immune responses via interactions with upstream signaling pathways, such as the T-cell receptor and B-cell receptor pathways, as well as their binding partners, which are uniquely expressed in each cell type. On the other hand, IRF4 acts as an oncogene in various mature lymphoid neoplasms when abnormally expressed. IRF4 induces several oncogenes, such as MYC, as well as genes that characterize each cell type by utilizing its ability as a master regulator of immunity. IRF4 and its upstream factor NF-κB form a transcriptional regulatory circuit, including feedback and feedforward loops, to maintain the oncogenic transcriptional program in malignant lymphoid cells. In this review article, we provide an overview of the molecular functions of IRF4 in mature lymphoid neoplasms and highlight its upstream and downstream pathways, as well as the regulatory circuits mediated by IRF4. Background: The association between intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) treatment and the risk of major thromboembolic adverse events (TAEs) remains under debate. This study aimed to examine associated risks of TAEs in patients receiving intravitreal anti-VEGF treatment, and effect modification by different indications. Methods: This retrospective cohort study analyzed Taiwan's National Health Insurance Database during 2011–2017 to identify neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) or diabetic macular edema (DME) patients newly receiving intravitreal aflibercept or ranibizumab. We followed up patients for 2 years, or until the occurrence of TAEs, including ischemic heart disease, ischemic stroke, transient ischemic attack, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism, death, or the end of the study period (i.e., 31 December 2018). We compared the risk of TAEs between patients with aflibercept and ranibizumab using Cox-proportional hazard models. We examined statistical interactions between the anti-VEGF treatment (i.e., ranibizumab and aflibercept) and indications (i.e., nAMD and DME) with regard to the outcome of TAEs. Results: We included 12,215 nAMD and 7532 DME patients. Among nAMD patients, those receiving aflibercept had lower risk of TAEs (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 0.85; 95% CI 0.77–0.94) compared with those receiving ranibizumab. However, among DME patients, those receiving aflibercept had no differences in the risk of TAEs (1.14; 0.97–1.35) compared with those receiving ranibizumab. Among patients treated with ranibizumab, the DME group had a higher risk of TAEs than the nAMD group (HR 1.15; 95% CI 1.03–1.28); similar results were observed in patients treated with aflibercept (HR 1.53; 95% CI 1.27–1.85). When DME patients were treated with aflibercept, the risk of TAEs was 31% higher than when nAMD patients were treated with ranibizumab (HR 1.31; 95% CI 1.09–1.56; p < 0.05). The p-value for statistical interaction between the anti-VEGF treatment and indications was 0.0033. Conclusions: Patients treated with aflibercept or ranibizumab for different indications may be associated with varying risk of TAEs. It is estimated that about 11–35% of pregnant women are colonized with Group B streptococcus. Intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP) is the primary intervention to decrease the risk of infecting babies born to GBS colonized mothers. A total of 5,996 pregnant women, who received the Taiwanese universal GBS screening program from 2012 to 2020, were included in this study that investigated GBS colonization, antimicrobial resistance rates and their neonatal incidence of invasive GBS infection. The average GBS colonization rate was 18.5%. Older age groups had higher colonization rates than younger age groups. Compared to Taiwanese, immigrant women from Indonesia had a greater positive rate. GBS isolated from Vietnamese women had significant greater resistance to clindamycin relative to Taiwanese women. Rates of resistance to erythromycin increase from 35.5% to 45.5% over the 9 years of measurements. The incidence of invasive GBS disease was about 0.6/1,000 (4/6,204) live births during the study. Although relatively low incidence of invasive GBS diseases was observed after implementation of IAP, the colonization of GBS remains high and antimicrobial resistance of GBS is increasing. Adolescent girls in low- and middle-income countries continue to face poor sexual and reproductive health (SRH). In Nepal, early marriage and motherhood, gender-based violence, and unmet need for contraception remain pervasive. Adolescent girls in rural areas bear a disproportionate burden of poor reproductive health outcomes, but there are limited context-specific data. This is a qualitative study to identify factors that impact adolescent girls' utilisation of and access to SRH services in a rural district of Nepal. We conducted 21 individual interviews with adolescent girls aged 15–19 years, and three focus group discussions with community health workers. We used an inductive analytic approach to identify emergent and recurrent themes and present the themes using the social ecological model. Individual-level factors that contribute to low uptake of services among adolescent girls include lack of knowledge, self-perceived lack of need, low decision-making autonomy, and shyness. Interpersonal factors that impact access include unsupportive family norms, absence of open communication, and need for permission from family members to access care. At the community level, disparate gender norms, son preference, and judgment by community members affect adolescent SRH. Inadequate sex education, far travel distance to facilities, lack of female healthcare providers and teachers, and inability to access abortion services were identified as organisational and systems barriers. Stigma was a factor cross-cutting several levels. Our findings suggest the need for multi-level strategies to address these factors to improve adolescent girls' SRH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Studies concerning the risk of metabolic syndrome associated with night work have shown inconsistent findings, due to imprecise working time data and cross-sectional design. We used register-based daily working time data to examine the risk of incident metabolic syndrome associated with night shift work. Methods: Working time data collected between 2010 and 2018 of 5775 Taiwanese hospital workers were used to identify night shift workers and to calculate the number of night shifts. Metabolic syndrome was identified by annual occupational health examination results, which were linked to the working time data. Logistic regression models and generalized estimating equations were used to examine the association between night shift work and metabolic syndrome and the 5 components of metabolic syndrome. Results: Night shift work is associated with a higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome (adjusted OR = 1.36, 95% CI = 1.04 to 1.78) and high waist circumference (adjusted OR = 1.27, 95% CI = 1.07 to 1.78) compared to day work. Among night shift workers, increased number of night shifts was associated with high blood pressure (adjusted OR = 1.15, 95% CI = 1.01 to 1.31). Conclusions: Night shift work is associated with metabolic risk factors. Long-term effects of circadian rhythm disruption on metabolic disturbances needs to be further studied. Background: The increasing numbers of elderly patients and rising incidence of maculopathy raise concerns over arterial thromboembolic events (ATEs) with the use of intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) medications. Objectives: This study aimed to compare the risk of ATEs between aflibercept and ranibizumab for maculopathy. Methods: We conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study analyzing Taiwan's National Health Insurance Database during 2011–2017 to identify patients with maculopathy receiving intravitreal aflibercept or ranibizumab. The primary outcome was any hospitalization or emergency room visit because of ATEs, including ischemic heart disease (IHD), ischemic stroke (IS), and transient ischemic attack (TIA). The secondary outcome was mortality within 30 days after occurrence of ATE. We employed propensity score methods to generate more homogeneous groups for comparison. Results: We included 5791 aflibercept users and 14,534 ranibizumab users in this study. Compared with the ranibizumab group, the aflibercept group was associated with a lower risk of ATE (hazard ratio [HR] 0.85; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.80–0.91), with HRs of 0.86 for IHD (95% CI 0.80–0.93), 0.87 for IS (95% CI 0.76–1.00), and 0.57 for TIA (95% CI 0.46–0.71). The risk of 30-day mortality after ATE (HR 1.39; 95% CI 0.80–2.43) and the risk of all-cause mortality (HR 1.02; 95% CI 0.89–1.17) in the aflibercept group was similar to that in the ranibizumab group. Conclusion: The use of aflibercept in patients with maculopathy was associated with a lower risk of ATE than was the use of ranibizumab. Curcumin can reduce the production of brain inflammatory mediators and symptoms of brain diseases. However, a large amount of free curcumin needs to be administered to achieve an effective level in the brain because of its poor water-solubility. Fucoidan and chitosan were reported to respectively target P-selectin and acidic microenvironment expressed by pathologically inflammatory cells/tissues. Herein, the self-assembly of chitosan and fucoidan which could encapsulate curcumin was developed to form the multi-stimuli-responsive nanocarriers, and their pathological pH- and P-selectin-responsive aspects were characterized. Through intranasal delivery to the brain, these curcumin-containing chitosan/fucoidan nanocarriers with dual pH-/P-selectin-targeting properties to the brain lesions improved drug delivery, distribution, and accumulation in the inflammatory brain lesions as evidenced by an augmented inhibitory effect against brain inflammation. Both evening chronotype and shift work are associated with depressive symptoms. This study examined whether the association between shift work and mood disorders and sleep problems varies by chronotype. The study population included 10637 participants from the Finnish Hospital Personnel Cohort Study. Work schedule was assessed using repeated questionnaires between 2000 and 2017. Chronotype, assessed using a single item from the Diurnal Type Scale, was categorized into definite morning, somewhat morning, somewhat evening, and definite evening types. The presence of mood disorders was identified by the 12-item General Health Questionnaire. Sleep problems were assessed by self-reported frequency of difficulty falling asleep and maintaining asleep. Longitudinal fixed effects models were used to examine the associations between shift work and the presence of mood disorders and sleep problems, stratified by chronotype. We found that fixed night work was associated with mood disorders among somewhat evening (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 1.91, 95% CI 1.09–3.34) and definite evening-type workers (adjusted OR 2.05, 95% CI 1.06–3.98). Shift work with night shifts was associated with mood disorders among definite evening-type workers (adjusted OR 1.75, 95% CI 1.18–2.60). Similarly, fixed night work was associated with difficulty maintaining sleep only among evening-type workers. Based on the concept of an imagined future community, this article analyzes the relationship between the establishment of a national biobank (Taiwan Biobank) and nation-building. This article examines (1) the shift in state policy from pursuing a Sci-Tech Island to an Island of Biomedical Technology for the purpose of strengthening the national economy and Taiwan's global competitiveness in biomedicine, (2) the discourses about the uniqueness of the Taiwanese genome as a niche in the competitive global biomedical market, and (3) scientists' imaginary of the necessity of a national genetic project for the health of Taiwan's future generations. By exploring how the discourse of the Taiwanese genome as a niche has been constructed, this article reveals that life science and scientists' imaginary of the futurity who have played important roles in Taiwan's nation-building. We argue that the future imaginaries contained in the scientific discourse regarding Taiwan Biobank reflect the ideas of global scientific competition, connections between genetic distinctness and nationality, and the health of future generations in Taiwan. To unravel pairing mechanism of a superconductor from limited, indirect experimental data is always a difficult task. It is common but sometimes dubious to explain by a theoretical model with some tuning parameters. In this work, we propose that the machine learning might infer pairing mechanism from observables like superconducting gap functions. For superconductivity within the Migdal–Eliashberg theory, we perform supervised learning between superconducting gap functions and electron–boson spectral functions. For simple spectral functions, the neural network can easily capture the correspondence and predict perfectly. For complex spectral functions, an autoencoder is utilized to reduce the complexity of the spectral functions to be compatible to that of the gap functions. After this complexity-reduction process, relevant information of the spectral function is extracted and good performance restores. Our proposed method can extract relevant information from data and can be applied to general function-to-function mappings with asymmetric complexities either in physics or other fields. Problem: Vaccination is the best protection against rubella and congenital rubella infection. Although a high rate of immunization coverage is achieved in Taiwan, it is unknown if the vaccine‐induced immunity persists from the age of vaccination to childbearing age. Methods of study: A total of 5,988 prenatal rubella IgG test results of young pregnant women aged 19‐23 years old from six hospitals during January 2001 to December 2008 and January 2013 to December 2017 were analyzed. We compared the rubella seropositivity rates and titers in these women who were vaccinated with MMR vaccine in four different vaccination age cohorts. Results: The overall rubella seropositivity rate was 87.4% (95% CI: 86.6%‐88.3%), and the mean rubella IgG level was 39 IU/mL among young pregnant women aged 19‐23 years. Women in the elementary cohort had the highest rubella positivity of 90.8% (95% CI: 89.6%‐91.9%), and levels gradually decrease to 84.6% (95% CI: 82.4%‐86.7%) in 15‐month plus cohort. The average rubella IgG was only 25 IU/mL for the 15‐month plus cohort. Women in cohorts immunized at younger age exhibited significantly lower chances of being seropositive relative to women in older cohort after adjusting other factors (all P <.01). Conclusion: The rubella seropositivity rate and rubella IgG levels were low among young women aged 19‐23 years, especially in cohorts immunized at younger age. Neonatal vascular ophthalmopathy is a refractory ophthalmologic disease, and is a major cause of blindness. Occurrence of neonatal vascular ophthalmopathy may be associated with Paxillin, a cellular adhesion molecule which promotes the migration of endothelial cells and angiogenesis. To explore the role of PXN in corneal angiogenesis, human umbilical vein endothelial cells were divided into five groups: i) Control group; ii) Empty vector-transfected control group; iii) PXN knockdown group (shPXN group); iv) PXN-negative control (NC) group; and v) PXN over-expressed group (overExp group). PXN protein levels, migration and tube formation were assessed in the different experimental groups. Mice were divided into four groups: i) Control; ii) Model; iii) shPXN; and iv) overExp groups. Tube formation was significantly increased in the overExp group compared with the empty vector-transfected control group (P<0.01). Tube formation was significantly decreased in the shPXN group compared with the PXN-NC group (P<0.01). In mice, blood corpuscles were significantly decreased in the shPXN group. PXN promoted the migration of endothelial cells and corneal angiogenesis. The results of the present study suggest a role for PXN in corneal angiogenesis and provide a theoretical basis and potential target for the treatment of corneal angiogenesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Unmet need for postpartum contraception in rural Nepal remains high and expanding access to sexual and reproductive healthcare is essential to achieving universal healthcare. We evaluated the impact of an integrated intervention that employed community health workers aided by mobile technology to deliver patient-centred, home-based antenatal and postnatal counselling on postpartum modern contraceptive use. This was a pre–post-intervention study in seven village wards in a single municipality in rural Nepal. The primary outcome was modern contraceptive use among recently postpartum women. We performed a multivariable logistic regression to examine contraceptive use among postpartum women pre- and one-year post-intervention. We conducted qualitative interviews to explore the implementation process. There were 445 postpartum women in the pre-intervention group and 508 in the post-intervention group. Modern contraceptive use increased from 29% pre-intervention to 46% post-intervention (p < 0.0001). Adjusting for age, caste, and household expenditure, time since delivery and sex of child in the index pregnancy, postpartum women one-year post-intervention had twice the odds (OR 2.3; CI 1.7, 3.1; p < 0.0001) of using a modern contraceptive method as compared to pre-intervention. Factors at the individual, family, and systems level influenced women's contraceptive decisions. The intervention contributed to increasing contraceptive use through knowledge transfer, demand generation, referrals to healthcare facilities, and follow-up. A community-based, patient-centred contraceptive counselling intervention supported by mobile technology and integrated into longitudinal care delivered by community health workers appears to be an effective strategy for improving uptake of modern contraception among postpartum women in rural Nepal. Supervised machine-learning (ML) models were employed to predict the occurrence of dry eye disease (DED) after vitrectomy in this study. The clinical data of 217 patients receiving vitrectomy from April 2017 to July 2018 were used as training dataset; the clinical data of 33 patients receiving vitrectomy from August 2018 to September 2018 were collected as validating dataset. The input features for ML training were selected based on the Delphi method and univariate logistic regression (LR). LR and artificial neural network (ANN) models were trained and subsequently used to predict the occurrence of DED in patients who underwent vitrectomy for the first time during the period. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC) was used to evaluate the predictive accuracy of the ML models. The AUCs with use of the LR and ANN models were 0.741 and 0.786, respectively, suggesting satisfactory performance in predicting the occurrence of DED. When the two models were compared in terms of predictive power, the fitting effect of the ANN model was slightly superior to that of the LR model. Background: BMS-470539, a recently introduced selective agonist of the melanocortin 1 receptor, is known to have anti-inflammatory properties. In this study, we investigated the effects of BMS-470539 on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory responses and delayed apoptosis with its signaling pathways in human neutrophils. Methods: Isolated human neutrophils were incubated with various concentrations of BMS-470539 (1, 10, and 100 µM) in the presence or absence of LPS (100 ng/ml), and the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-1β, were assessed. The effects of BMS-470539 on the expression of mitogen- activated protein kinases (MAPKs), such as p38, extracellular-signal-regulated kinase 1/2, and c-Jun N-terminal kinase, and the expression of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) in LPS-stimulated human neutrophils, were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Neutrophil apoptosis was also measured by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (annexin V/propidium iodide) in LPS-stimulated neutrophils under treatment with BMS-470539. Results: BMS-470539 attenuated LPS-induced expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and phosphorylation of MAPKs and NF-κB. LPS stimulation reduced neutrophil apoptosis compared to the controls; however, BMS-470539 significantly inhibited the reduction of neutrophil apoptosis. Conclusions: BMS-470539 can suppress the inflammatory responses of LPS-stimulated neutrophils by inhibition of MAPK pathways or NF-κB pathway, and it can also inhibit LPS-delayed neutrophil apoptosis. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is commonly associated with obesity, and it is mainly treated through lifestyle modifications. The very low-carbohydrate diet (VLCD) can help lose weight rapidly but the possible effects of extreme dietary patterns on lipid metabolism and inflammatory responses in individuals with NAFLD remain debatable. Moreover, VLCD protein content may affect its effectiveness in weight loss, steatosis, and inflammatory responses. Therefore, we investigated the effects of VLCDs with different protein contents in NAFLD rats and the mechanisms underlying these effects. After a 16-week inducing period, the rats received an isocaloric normal diet (NC group) or a VLCD with high or low protein content (NVLH vs. NVLL group, energy ratio:protein/carbohydrate/lipid=20/1/79 vs. 6/1/93) for the next 8 weeks experimental period. We noted that the body weight decreased in both the NVLH and NVLL groups; nevertheless, the NVLH group demonstrated improvements in ketosis. The NVLL group led to hepatic lipid accumulation, possibly by increasing very-low-density lipoprotein receptor (VLDLR) expression and elevating liver oxidative stress, subsequently activating the expression of Nrf2, and inflammation through the TLR4/TRIF/NLRP3 and TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB pathway. The NVLH was noted to prevent the changes in VLDLR and the TLR4-inflammasome pathway partially. The VLCD also reduced the diversity of gut microbiota and changed their composition. In conclusion, although low-protein VLCD consumption reduces BW, it may also lead to metabolic disorders and changes in microbiota composition; nevertheless, a VLCD with high protein content may partially alleviate these limitations. The conversion of sterols to steroid synthons by engineered mycobacteria comprises one of the basic ways for the production of steroid medications in the pharmaceutical industry. Here, we revealed that high amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generate during the conversion process of sterols, which impairs the cell viability of mycobacterial cells and thus hinders the conversion of sterols to steroid synthons. Accordingly, the endogenous antioxidants for detoxifying ROS in mycobacteria, ROS scavenging enzymes and low molecular weight thiols, were examined. The results revealed that three antioxidants, catalase (CAT), mycothiol (MSH), and ergothioneine (EGT), demonstrated efficacy toward neutralizing the excessive ROS produced during sterol metabolism. CAT overexpression or MSH or EGT augmentation enhanced the conversion of phytosterols to 22-hydroxy-23,24-bisnorchol-4-ene-3-one (4-HBC) by 18.9%, 23.8%, and 32.1%, respectively, and also enhanced the cell viability, indicating the benefits of these antioxidants in reducing ROS-induced stress. Further combinatorial augmentation of CAT, MSH, and EGT demonstrated enhanced effects toward intracellular ROS scavenging, resulting in 54.2% greater cell viability and 47.5% enhancement in 4-HBC production. These findings indicated that the excessive ROS induces cell stress, in turn limiting the conversion of sterols, whereas neutralization of the excessive ROS by combined control of CAT, MSH, and EGT serves as an effective strategy to boost the conversion productivity of sterols to steroid synthons. • Mycobacterial sterol to steroid synthon conversion is important for pharmaceuticals. • ROS generation during the catabolic process of sterols impairs cell viability. • Antioxidants (CAT, MSH and EGT) can scavenge ROS in sterol metabolism. • Augmentation of CAT, MSH and EGT enhances cell viability and sterol conversion. • Engineering control of ROS is an effective strategy to boost sterol conversion. An imbalance of energy intake and expenditure leads to fat accumulation and metabolic disorders. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of antroquinonol on diet‐induced obesity. Thirty‐two rats were divided into a control group (C), an obesogenic group (OB), and two experimental groups consuming 25 (OB‐AQ25) and 50 mg/kg (OB‐AQ50) antroquinonol (n = 8). After a 12‐week experimental period, we collected blood, liver, abdominal fat, and gastrocnemius muscle tissue for analysis. The obesogenic diet induced greater weight gain and fat accumulation, and increased hepatic lipids, and tumor necrosis factor‐α and interleukin‐1β concentrations in rats. Antroquinonol consumption reduced epididymal and hepatic lipids and inflammatory cytokines. We found that antroquinonol upregulated hepatic adenosine monophosphate‐activated protein kinase and downregulated sterol regulatory element‐binding protein‐1 protein expressions and downregulated fatty acid synthase mRNA expression. In addition, gastrocnemius fibronectin type III domain containing 5 protein expression was also higher in the B group. In conclusion, our results suggested that consuming antroquinonol may ameliorate diet‐induced abdominal and hepatic fat accumulation. Practical Application: Antroquinonol is a bioactive compound derived from Antrodia camphorate which is traditionally used in Chinese medicinal cuisine, and is used for developing functional foods in Taiwan. This is the first study investigating the possible effects of antroquinonol on obesity and we found that antroquinonol can ameliorate diet‐induced obesity, and therefore may be used in further studies and functional food development. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a hot‐water extract of defatted Camellia oleifera seeds (CSE) in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)‐induced liver damage in rats. Wistar rats were separated into four groups including the normal (N) and CCl4 control (C) groups, which are fed a control diet, and the CCL (low‐dose CSE) and CCH (high‐dose CSE) groups, which are fed with a control diet plus different amount of CSE for an 8‐week experimental period. Liver injury in the C, CCL, and CCH groups was induced by injecting CCl4 (i.p.) twice a week from the 5th week to the end of the study. In CCl4‐treated rats, the alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) activities and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration significantly increased compared to the normal group. Lower antioxidative enzyme activities and higher proinflammatory cytokines, transforming growth factor‐β (TGF‐β) and hydroxyproline concentrations in the liver were also found in the CCl4‐treated group compared to the normal group. In contrast, the administration of CSE alleviated the biochemical and histopathological changes including inflammation, liver cell damage, and fibrosis caused by CCl4 in rats. Our results indicated that CSE exhibited hepatoprotective effects in CCl4‐induced liver hepatotoxicity through alleviating hepatic inflammation and fibrosis in rats. Practical Application: Camellia oleifera are widely used for edible oil production while the defatted seeds pomace is often discarded. We found that extract of C. oleifera pomace containing phenolic compounds, saponins, and polysaccharides showed protective effects chemical‐driven liver damage and, therefore, may be used in further studies and developing functional foods. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the hot-water extract of defatted Camellia oleifera seeds (CSE) on body and liver fat accumulation in rats. Forty rats were divided into 5 groups and each group was fed either an isocaloric control diet or a high-fat liquid diet with 0% (H), 0.12% (H1), 0.24% (H2), or 0.48% CSE (H3) for 8 weeks. Ingestion of the high-fat liquid diet increased abdominal and liver fat accumulation, although no difference was found in body weights compared with rats fed the control diet. We found that rats fed the H2 and H3 diets had lower plasma alanine aminotransferase activities than the H group in the fourth and eighth weeks. At the end of the study, the H2 and H3 groups also had lower epididymal and retroperitoneal fat masses, and all CSE groups had lower circulatory leptin levels than the H group. CSE consumption decreased hepatic fat accumulation in terms of liver triglycerides and a histopathology analysis, and ameliorated high-fat diet-induced elevation of hepatic tumor necrosis factor-α levels. We also found that CSE groups had lower malondialdehyde and hydroxyproline levels in the liver. Our results suggested that CSE may exert beneficial effects through decreasing body fat accumulation and hepatic steatosis and regulating adipokine levels in diet-induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The accumulation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) and the enhanced interaction of AGE with their cellular receptor (RAGE) have been implicated in the progression of chronic kidney disease. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the AGE/RAGE-induced nephrotoxic effects are associated with inflammasome activation and endothelial dysfunction. Chronic renal injury was examined in BALB/c mice by the long-term administration of carbonyl-AGE for 16 weeks. Endothelial dysfunction was detected by measuring the number of circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) and the levels of nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and nitric oxide (NO) in kidneys. Results showed that administration of methylglyoxal-bovine serum albumin (MG-BSA) AGE accelerated renal MG, carboxyethyl lysine, carboxymethyl lysine and malondialdehyde formation and, in parallel, the levels of serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) were significantly increased. Expression of RAGE and NLRP3 inflammasome-related proteins (TXNIP, NLRP3, procaspase-1 and caspase-1) and IL (interleukin)-1β secretion were upregulated, whereas the levels of EPCs, eNOS and NO were lower in MG-BSA-treated mice. This induction by MG-BSA was significantly inhibited by RAGE antagonist. Our results firstly reveal a possible mechanism of AGE-mediated renal dysfunction upon NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is the causative bacterium in most urinary tract infections (UTIs). UPEC cells adhere to and invade bladder epithelial cells (BECs) and cause uropathogenicity. Invading UPEC cells may encounter one of several fates, including degradation in the lysosome, expulsion to the extracellular milieu for clearance, or survival as an intracellular bacterial community and quiescent intracellular reservoir that can cause later infections. Here we considered the possibility that UPEC cells secrete factors that activate specific host cell signaling networks to facilitate the UPEC invasion of BECs. Using GFP-based reporters and Western blot analysis, we found that the representative human cystitis isolate E. coli UTI89 and its derivative UTI89Δ FimH, which does not bind to BECs, equally activate phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate 3-OH kinase (PI3K), Akt kinase, and mTOR complex (mTORC) 1 and 2 in BECs. We also found that conditioned medium taken from UTI89 and UTI89Δ FimH cultures similarly activates epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), PI3K, Akt, andmTORCand that inhibition of EGFR and mTORC2, but not mTORC1, abrogates UTI89 invasion in vitro and in animal models of UTI. Our results reveal a key molecular mechanism of UPEC invasion and the host cells it targets, insights that may have therapeutic utility for managing the ever-increasing number of persistent and chronic UTIs. Zeolite thin films with ordered nanopores and a low dielectric constant can serve as an insulation layer in microelectronic devices. However, the absence of a high-throughput deposition technique is a major technical hurdle in the industrial-scale production of zeolite thin films. Herein, we report on a scalable method, ultrasonic nozzle spray deposition (UNSD), which addresses this issue. A high-frequency standing wave introduced by the ultrasonic nozzle produces uniform sized droplets of the cast suspensions at a scale of tens to hundreds of micrometers, which results in a uniform thin film following the removal of the solvent. In this paper, we focus on the deposition of thin films comprising pure-silica zeolite MFI on a silicon wafer substrate. We systematically investigated how the quality of the zeolite thin films is affected by the composition of the cast suspensions and UNSD operating parameters. We identified the UNSD operating window that allows for the fabrication of uniform dense zeolite thin films at thicknesses ranging from hundreds of nanometers to 3 μm. We determined that zeolite MFI thin films prepared using UNSD outperformed those fabricated using conventional spin-on deposition in terms of uniform film thickness, low leakage current, and high Young's modulus. Background: Ketamine has been used to probe the biology of psychosis and cognitive dysfunction in humans. High levels of ketamine abuse are associated with persisting psychosis (KPP) in a minority of users. However, relatively little is known about cognitive function among KPP patients and whether the cognitive impairments associated with KPP resemble those of schizophrenia (SZ).Methods: We recruited 149 treatment-seeking patients, including nonpsychotic ketamine users (KNP, n=51), KPP (n=23), and SZ (n=75) patients. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used to evaluate psychopathology and the Cogstate Brief Battery to assess cognitive function including psychomotor processing speed, attention, working memory, verbal and visual learning and memory, spatial problem solving, and social-emotional cognition.Results: Ketamine-dependent patients had an extensive history of ketamine use (average duration=7.1±4.2years, average consumption=3.8±2.7g per day). Although KPP patients used relatively less average ketamine daily dose than KNP patients, KPP patients exhibited significantly greater total PANSS score and subscale scores, while these scores in KPP and SZ patients did not differ significantly. After adjusting for demographic characteristics and antipsychotic dose, KPP and SZ patients showed impairments in spatial problem solving and verbal memory compared to KNP patients, but KPP and SZ patients did not significantly differ from each other.Conclusion: These data suggest that the symptom profile and cognitive impairments associated with persisting psychosis due to chronic heavy ketamine abuse resemble those of schizophrenia, while KNP patients showed significantly less severe symptom profile and cognitive impairment than KPP and SZ. Introduction: Effective drunk-driving policies are not adopted consistently in many countries. To understand how drinking behaviors influence national drunk-driving policymaking, the associations between drunk-driving policies and country-level drinking volumes and patterns were examined.Methods: Data for 194 countries were obtained from the WHO 2012 Global Information System on Alcohol and Health. Country-level drinking behaviors were measured using average drinking volumes and patterns of drinking scores based on six attributes of risky drinking. Drunk-driving policies were categorized into preemptive measures (random breath testing, breath alcohol concentration limits for driving a vehicle, and sobriety checkpoints), penalties (community service, short- or long-term detention, fines, suspension or revocation of license, and vehicle impoundment), mandatory treatment, and ignition interlock. Data analysis was conducted in 2017. The percentages of each policy adoption were examined in countries with different drinking behaviors. The internal consistencies of preemptive measures were calculated using Cronbach's α. A structural equation model was established to examine the associations between drinking behaviors and drunk-driving policy categories, after adjusting for national income levels and general alcohol policies.Results: Mandatory treatment and preemptive measures were less commonly adopted than penalties were. The adoption of preemptive measures had a low consistency level, and the consistency level decreased with drinking pattern riskiness. Risky drinking patterns were negatively associated with mandatory treatment policy.Conclusions: Drinking patterns are associated with national drunk-driving policymaking. Accessible medical treatment and comprehensive preemptive measures should be advocated in countries with risky drinking patterns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many liposomal drug carriers have shown great promise in the clinic. To ensure the efficient preclinical development of drug-loaded liposomes, the drug retention and circulation properties of these systems should be characterized. Iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are used as T2 contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Gold nanoclusters (GNCs) contain tens of atoms with subnanometer dimensions; they have very low cytotoxicity and possess superb red emitting fluorescent properties, which prevents in vivo background autofluorescence. The aim of this study was to develop dual imaging, nanocomposite, multifunctional liposome drug carriers (Fe 3 O 4 -GNCs) comprising MNPs of iron oxide and GNCs. First, MNPs of iron oxide were synthesized by co-precipitation. The MNP surfaces were modified with amine groups using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). Second, GNCs were synthesized by reducing HAuCl 4 ·3H 2 O with NaBH4 in the presence of lipoic acid (as a stabilizer and nanosynthetic template). The GNCs were grown by adsorption onto particles to control the size and stability of the resultant colloids. Subsequently, dual Fe 3 O 4 -GNCs imaging probes were fabricated by conjugating the iron oxide MNPs with the GNCs via amide bonds. Finally, liposome nanocarriers were used to enclose the Fe 3 O 4 -GNCs in an inner phase (liposome@Fe 3 O 4 -GNCs) by reverse phase evaporation. These nanocarriers were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrophotometry, superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging and in vivo imaging systems (IVIS). Chronotypes are associated with shift work tolerance and sleep in shift workers, and sleep mediates the impact of shift work on mental health. However, the role of chronotype in the association between shift work and mental health has not been clarified. In this study, we aimed to examine the association between chronotype and burnout in shift workers, using the validated Munich ChronoType Questionnaire for shift workers (MCTQshift). A total of 288 shift workers with irregular shift frequencies were recruited and completed the Chinese-version MCTQshift and the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ). Chronotypes were assessed by the calculation of corrected mid-sleep time (MSFSC) from mid-sleep time on free days (MSF) based on their exact shift schedules. Another 26 evening-shift nurses were monitored with actigraphy for at least two consecutive evening shifts and the following two free days. Burnout was evaluated using the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory. We found that MSFESC, MSFE and mid-sleep time on workdays (MSWE) had normal distributions and correlated significantly with MEQ scores (r = − 0.47, −0.45 and −0.47, respectively; all p < 0.001). MSW was more closely correlated with actigraphy-derived mid-sleep time on the free day before workdays than that on workdays (r = 0.61 and 0.48, respectively, p < 0.05). Sleep duration was significantly longer on workdays among evening-shift workers who slept late on workdays than those who slept early (β = 0.59, p < 0.001). After demographic and work characteristics were adjusted for in linear regression models, late chronotype and high social jetlag were associated with burnout scores in evening-shift workers. In conclusion, the Chinese-version MCTQshift is a valid tool for chronotype assessment. Interventions to improve sleep in shift workers should be tailored to chronotype due to variations in sleep behavior. Late chronotype may be an inherent feature of mental health problems, because the association with burnout was significant in both day workers in previous studies and shift workers.
