In this study, a multi-stage long-term expansion planning model for an active distribution network (ADN) is presented, with the aim of minimising the investment and operation cost in a coordinated manner over an established horizon. The planning model optimises the following alternatives: upgrading the capacities of substations, reinforcing and/or constructing cable circuits, placing voltage regulators (VRs) and/or static VAR generators, and determining the connection points for distributed generators (DGs). The investment decisions are optimised over the entire planning horizon which can be further divided into multiple periods, and the operation strategies, e.g. active management of DG as well as ADN topology reconfiguration, are determined according to the profiles of representative scenarios. To relieve the computational burden, the original model is properly simplified as a mixed-integer quadratic constrained programming problem through linearisation and approximation techniques, and the solution optimality is guaranteed after invoking the off-the-shell solver. A second-order Newton method is presented to construct analytical approximate solutions to a nonlinear pseudo-oscillator in which the restoring force is inversely proportional to the dependent variable. The nonlinear equation is first expressed in a specific form, and it is then solved in two steps, a predictor and a corrector step. In each step, the harmonic balance method is used in an appropriate manner to obtain a set of linear algebraic equations. With only one simple second-order Newton iteration step, a short, explicit, and highly accurate analytical approximate solution can be derived. The approximate solutions are valid for all amplitudes of the pseudo-oscillator. With the significant decrease in natural gas prices in many parts of the world, the employment of gas turbine (GT) units has increased steadily in recent years. The ever-increasing deployment of GT units is strengthening the interconnections between electric power and natural gas systems, which could provide a higher level of operational flexibility and reliability. As a result, the planning and operation issues in the interconnected electric power and natural gas systems have aroused concern. In these circumstances, the impacts of increasing deployment of GT units in power system operation are studied and evaluated through well-being analysis (WBA). The fast responsive characteristics of GT units are analyzed first, and the definition and adaption of WBA in a power system with increasing deployment of GT units are addressed. Then the equivalent reserve capacity of GT units is estimated, taking demand fluctuations, commitment plans, and operational risks of GT units into account. The WBA of a power system with increasing deployment of GT units is conducted considering the uncertainties of system operation states and renewable energy sources. Finally, the proposed methods are validated through an integrated version of the IEEE 118-bus power system and a 10-bus natural gas system, and the impacts of GT units on power system security under various penetration levels are examined. Simulation results demonstrate that the role of a GT unit as a low-cost electricity producer may conflict with its role as a reserve provider, but through maintaining a proper proportion of idle GT capacities for reserve, the well-being performance of the power system concerned can be significantly improved. To make full use of the flexible charging and discharging capabilities of the growing number of electric vehicles (EVs), a bidding strategy for EV aggregators to participate in a day-ahead electricity energy market is proposed in this work. The proposed bidding strategy is able to reduce the operating cost of the EV aggregators and to handle the uncertainties of day-ahead market prices properly at the same time. Agreements between the EV owners and the aggregators are discussed, and a hierarchical market structure is proposed. While assuming the aggregators as economic rational entities, the bidding strategy is established based on the market prices, extra battery charging/discharging costs and the expected profits. The bidding clearing system will display the current/temporal market clearance results of the day-ahead market before the final clearance, and hence the market participants can revise their bids and mitigate the risks, to some extent, of forecasted market price forecast errors. Background: Socioeconomic inequalities in childhood obesity prevalence differ according to a country's stage of nutrition transition. The aim of this study was to determine which socioeconomic factors influence inequalities in obesity prevalence in Chinese primary school children living in an urban setting.Methods: We assessed obesity prevalence among 9917 children aged 5-12 years from a stratified random sample of 29 state-funded (residents) and private (migrants) schools in Guangzhou, China. Height and weight were objectively measured using standardised methods and overweight (+1 SD < BMI-for-age z-score ≤ +2 SD) and obesity (BMI-for-age z-score > +2 SD) were defined using the World Health Organisation reference 2007. Socioeconomic characteristics were ascertained through parental questionnaires. Generalised Linear Mixed Models with schools as a random effect were used to compare likelihood of overweight/obesity among children in private, with public schools, adjusting for child age and sex, maternal and paternal BMI and education level, and household per-capita income.Results: The prevalence of overweight/obesity was 20.0 % (95 % CI 19.1 %-20.9 %) in resident compared with 14.3 % (95 % CI 13.0 %-15.4 %) in migrant children. In the adjusted model, the odds of overweight/obesity remained higher among resident children (OR 1.36; 1.16-1.59), was higher in boys compared with girls (OR 2.56; 2.24-2.93), and increased with increasing age (OR 2.78; 1.95-3.97 in 11-12 vs 5-6 year olds), per-capita household income (OR 1.27; 1.01-1.59 in highest vs lowest quartile) and maternal education (OR 1.51; 1.16-1.97 in highest vs lowest). Socioeconomic differences were most marked in older boys, and were only statistically significant in resident children.Conclusions: The socioeconomic gradient for childhood obesity in China is the reverse of the patterns seen in countries at more advanced stages of the obesity epidemic. This presents an opportunity to intervene and prevent the onset of social inequalities that are likely to ensue with further economic development. The applications of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) in power systems have been paid increasing attention in recent years. Apart from all the benefits that BESSs can bring to the power systems, their potential applications in assisting power system restoration after a major blackout have not yet been systematically investigated. The flexible charging and discharging characteristics of BESSs could help maintain the balance between power supply and demand during the system restoration process, thus the recovery speed of the power system concerned after a blackout could be accelerated. Given this background, the applications of BESSs in power system restoration is investigated. First, the potential applications of BESSs during power system restoration process are discussed. A multi-objective optimisation model is next proposed, aiming at minimising the number of circuit breaker operations and outage durations of both the non-black-start generating units and the important loads. Meanwhile, the application of intermittent renewable energy sources for improving power system restoration is also discussed. The operation strategy of BESSs will also be optimised after the system restoration scheme is attained through the multiobjective optimisation. An array of specific and non-specific molecules, which are expressed in the testis, have been demonstrated to be responsible for testicular function. Our previous study revealed that dermatopontin (DPT) is expressed in Sertoli cells of the testis, however, its roles in testicular function remains somewhat elusive. In the present study, CdCl2- and busulfan-induced testicular dysfunction models were used to investigate the implications of DPT expression for testicular function. The mRNA and protein expression levels of DPT were detected using reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blotting, respectively. A negative correlation was observed between testicular damage and the expression of DPT, which suggested that an increase in DPT expression may be a marker for testicular dysfunction. This result was corroborated by the finding that transgenic mice exhibiting Sertoli cell-specific overexpression of DPT exhibited damage to their testicular morphology. Additionally, DPT overexpression in the testis affected the expression levels of claudin-11 and zonula occludens-1, which indicated that DPT may affect testicular function by affecting the integrity of the blood-testis barrier (BTB). In conclusion, the present study provided evidence to suggest that DPT may be indicative of mouse testicular dysfunction, since increased expression may be associated with damage to the BTB. Background In mammalian development, the formation of most tissues is achieved by a relatively small repertoire of basic morphogenetic events (e.g. cell adhesion, locomotion, apoptosis, etc.), permutated in various sequences to form different tissues. Together with cell differentiation, these mechanisms allow populations of cells to organize themselves into defined geometries and structures, as simple embryos develop into complex organisms. The control of tissue morphogenesis by populations of engineered cells is a potentially very powerful but neglected aspect of synthetic biology. Results We have assembled a modular library of synthetic morphogenetic driver genes to control (separately) mammalian cell adhesion, locomotion, fusion, proliferation and elective cell death. Here we describe this library and demonstrate its use in the T-REx-293 human cell line to induce each of these desired morphological behaviours on command. Conclusions Building on from the simple test systems described here, we want to extend engineered control of morphogenetic cell behaviour to more complex 3D structures that can inform embryologists and may, in the future, be used in surgery and regenerative medicine, making synthetic morphology a powerful tool for developmental biology and tissue engineering. Recently, research on and applications of human fixation detection in video compressed domain have gained increasing attention. However, prediction accuracy and computational complexity still remain a challenge. This paper addresses the problem of compressed domain fixations detection in the videos based on residual discrete cosine transform coefficients norm (RDCN) and Markov random field (MRF). RDCN feature is directly extracted from the compressed video with partial decoding and is normalized. After spatial-temporal filtering, the normalized map [Smoothed RDCN (SRDCN) map] is taken to the MRF model, and the optimal binary label map is obtained. Based on the label map and the center saliency map, saliency enhancement and nonsaliency inhibition are done for the SRDCN map, and the final SRDCN-MRF salient map is obtained. Compared with the similar models, we enhance the available energy functions and introduce an energy function that indicates the positional information of the saliency. The procedure is advantageous for improving prediction accuracy and reducing computational complexity. The validation and comparison are made by several accuracy metrics on two ground truth datasets. Experimental results show that the proposed saliency detection model achieves superior performances over several state-of-the-art compressed-domain and pixel-domain algorithms on evaluation metrics. Background: To investigate the association between weight status and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among pupils in Guangzhou, China. Methods: The study comprised 5781 children aged 8-12 years from 29 schools. Height and weight were objectively measured using standardized methods, and BMI z-score derived using the age and sex specific WHO reference 2007 for 5-19 years. Weight status was classified as underweight (<-2SD), healthy weight (between -2SD and 1SD), overweight/obesity (>1SD). HRQOL was measured by the self-report version of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0. Results: After controlling for gender, age, school type, parental education, and family income, HRQOL scores were significantly lower in overweight/obese compared with healthy weight children only in the social functioning domain (β = −1.93, p = 0.001). Compared with healthy weight children, underweight children had significantly lower total (β = −1.47, p = 0.05) and physical summary scores (β = −2.18, p = 0.02). Subgroup analysis for gender indicated that compared to healthy weight, total (β = −1.96, p = 0.02), psychosocial (β = −2.40, p = 0.01), social functioning (β = −3.36, p = 0.001), and school functioning (β = −2.19, p = 0.03) scores were lower in overweight/obese girls, but not boys. On the other hand, being underweight was associated with lower physical functioning (β = −2.27, p = 0. 047) in girls, and lower social functioning (β = −3.63, p = 0.01) in boys. The associations were mainly observed in children aged 10 and over, but were not significant in younger children. Children from private schools had generally lower HRQOL compared to those in public schools, but the associations with weight status were similar in both groups. Conclusions: The relationship between overweight/obesity and HRQOL in children in China is not as prominent as that seen in children in western or high-income countries. However, there appears to be gender and age differences, with more of an impact of overweight on HRQOL in girls and older children compared with boys and younger children. Underweight is also associated with lower HRQOL. Future intervention to prevent both obesity and undernutrition may have a positive impact on the HRQOL in children in China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The energy stored in the batteries of electric vehicles (EVs) could be employed for starting generators when a blackout or a local outage occurs. Considering the feature of the battery swapping mode, an available capacity model of the batteries in a centralised charging station is first developed. Then, the authors analyse the start-up characteristics of a generator powered by batteries and propose a bi-level optimisation-based network reconfiguration model to determine the restoration paths with an objective of maximising the overall generation capability. In the upper-level optimisation model, the generator start-up sequence is optimised, whereas the restoration paths are optimised in the lower-level one. Moreover, they consider the uncertainties associated with the available capacity of the batteries. The bi-level optimisation model for the network reconfiguration is developed in the chance-constrained programming framework and solved by the well-established particle swarm optimisation algorithm. Finally, case studies are employed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented model. Simulation results show that a centralised EV charging station could act as a power source to effectively restore a power system without black-start (BS) generators or with insufficient cranking power from BS generators, and the presented model could be used to guide actual system restorations. Glucocorticoid receptor (GR) function is essential for glucocorticoid action on various effector cells. The aim of the present study was to investigate the mRNA expression profiles of GRα and GRβ in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and examine the association between the expression levels of the GR isoforms and the serological and virological hepatitis B virus (HBV) status in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). A total of 29 CHB patients were examined in the present study, which were divided into subgroups according to serological and virological markers. The levels of GRα and GRβ in PBMCs, HBV viral loads, HBV surface antigen (HBsAg), HBV e antigen (HBeAg) and pre-S1Ag were measured. A total of 43 healthy individuals served as controls. GRα was present in the PBMCs of all CHB patients and healthy controls, whereas GRβ-specific products were present in only 93.1% of the CHB patients and 86.0% of the healthy controls. The GRα levels were positively correlated with the expression of GRβ in the CHB patients (r=0.419; P<0.05) and were significantly lower compared with those observed in the healthy controls (60.51±23.73, vs. 100.00±40.75; P<0.001). Compared with the healthy controls, significant differences were observed in the mRNA expression of GRα in the CHB patients when stratified according to the HBeAg, pre-S1Ag and HBV viral load status (P<0.05), but not in the pre-S1Ag-positive patients. These data demonstrated that the mRNA expression profile of GRα differed between the CHB patients and the healthy controls. An integrated model of photonic crystal (PC) demultiplexer that can be used to combine dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) and coarse wavelength-division multiplexing (CWDM) systems is first proposed. By applying the PC demultiplexer, dense channel spacing 0.8 nm and coarse channel spacing 20 nm are obtained at the same time. The transmission can be improved to nearly 90%, and the crosstalk can be decreased to less than -18 dB by enlarging the width of the bus waveguide. The total size of the device is 21 x 42 μm². Four channels on one side of the demultiplexer can achieve DWDM in the wavelength range between 1575 and 1578 nm, and the other four channels on the other side can achieve CWDM in the wavelength range between 1490 and 1565 nm, respectively. Introduction: Lysyl hydroxylase 3 (LH3) is a collagen post-translational modifying enzyme; it is abnormally activated during the formation of collagen cross-links. iCRT3 is an inhibitor of both Wnt and β-catenin responsive transcription. We hypothesized that LH3 is regulated by TGFβ1/Smad3 signaling and Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathways. Some evidence suggested that there is complicated cross-talk between the two signal pathways in the genesis of pulmonary fibrosis.Material and Methods: The normal culturing human lung cancer cell line A549 was derived from pulmonary epithelial cells. Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) was induced A549 cells of pulmonary fibrosis. MTT assays detected cell growth stimulation by TGF-β1; collagen pyridine-crosslinking contents were detected by ELISA kits. Immunofluorescence were used to evaluate expression of key molecules in PLOD3 (LH3), Wnt/β-catenin and TGFβ1/Smad3 pathways.Results: Our findings suggested that iCRT3 could decrease LH3 protein expression (p < 0.01), Wnt1, β-catenin and p-Smad3 protein expression (p < 0.05). Knock-down PLOD3 could decrease LH3, collagen I gene and protein expression (p < 0.05). These effects were associated with decreasing collagen pyridine-crosslinking production (p < 0.05). However, ovexpression PLOD3 could increase LH3, collagen I gene and protein expression (p < 0.05). The result showed that LH3 plays an important role in collagen post-translational modifications, and it is regulated by Wnt/β-catenin and TGFβ1/Smad3 pathways.Conclusions: This study suggests that PLOD3 (LH3) represents a target to prevent pulmonary fibrosis. Background and Objectives: With prevalence of childhood obesity increasing rapidly, developing of effective and sustainable intervention strategies is becoming more and more important for the prevention of childhood obesity in China. A trial was developed to evaluate the effect of comprehensive school-based intervention on childhood obesity.Methods and Study Design: A multi-center cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted among urban children (n=9,867) aged 6-13 years in 38 primary schools from six large cities. Comprehensive intervention, nutrition education and physical activity interventions were carried out among children. Nutrition education was also targeted towards teachers, parents and health workers in intervention schools. The program was implemented for 2 semesters from May 2009 to May 2010.Results: The combined prevalence of overweight and obesity increased by 1.5 percent (22.7% vs 24.2%, p<0.001) in control group while 0.2 percent in comprehensive intervention group (23.6% vs 23.8%, p=0.954) after intervention (p=0.067). The effect was significantly stronger among girls than boys (-1.4% vs -0.9%, p=0.028). A significant intervention effect was found on BMI for -0.3 kg/m2 (95% confidence interval (CI): -0.4, -0.2; p<0.001), BMI z scores for -0.14 (95% CI: -0.18, -0.11; p<0.001)，body fat for -0.8 percent (95% CI: -0.9, -0.6; p<0.001), waist circumference for -0.5 cm (95% CI: -0.6, -0.3; p<0.001), blood serum glucose for -0.20 mmol/L (95% CI: -0.24, -0.16; p<0.001) and cholesterol for -0.32 mmol/L (95% CI: -0.34, -0.30; p<0.001).Conclusions: We observed moderately significant effects on combined prevalence of overweight and obesity, BMI, BMI z scores, waist circumference, percentage body fat, glucose and lipid for a comprehensive school-based intervention of childhood obesity in China. Stomata are microscopic openings that allow for the exchange of gases between plants and the environment. In Arabidopsis, stomatal patterning is specified by the ERECTA family (ERf) receptor kinases (RKs), the receptor-like protein (RLP) TOO MANY MOUTHS (TMM), and EPIDERMAL PATTERNING FACTOR (EPF) peptides. Here we show that TMM and ER or ER-LIKE1 (ERL1) form constitutive complexes, which recognize EPF1 and EPF2, but the single ERfs do not. TMM interaction with ERL1 creates a binding pocket for recognition of EPF1 and EPF2, indicating that the constitutive TMM-ERf complexes function as the receptors of EPF1 and EPF2. EPFL9 competes with EPF1 and EPF2 for binding to the ERf-TMM complex. EPFL4 and EPFL6, however, are recognized by the single ERfs without the requirement of TMM. In contrast to EPF1,2, the interaction of EPFL4,6 with an ERf is greatly reduced in the presence of TMM. Taken together, our data demonstrate that TMM dictates the specificity of ERfs for the perception of different EPFs, thus functioning as a specificity switch for the regulation of the activities of ERfs. We address the problem of the lossless compression of hyperspectral images and present two efficient algorithms inspired by the distributed source coding principle, which perform the compression by means of the blocked coset coding. In order to make full use of the intraband and interband correlation, the prediction error block scheme and the multiband prediction scheme are introduced in the proposed algorithms. In the proposed algorithms, the prediction error of each 16 × 16 pixel block is partitioned into prediction error blocks of size 4 × 4. The bit rate of the pixels corresponding to the 4 × 4 prediction error block is determined by its maximum prediction error. This processing takes advantage of the local correlation to reduce the bit rate efficiently and brings the negligible increase of additional information. In addition to that, the proposed algorithms can be easily parallelized by having different 4 × 4 blocks compressed at the same time. Their performances are evaluated on AVIRIS images and compared with several existing algorithms. The experimental results on hyperspectral images show that the proposed algorithms have a competitive compression performance with existing distributed compression algorithms. Progressive tissue fibrosis is a major cause of the morbidity and mortality associated with repeated epithelial injuries and accumulation of myofibroblasts. Successful treatment options are limited by an incomplete understanding of the molecular mechanisms that regulate myofibroblast accumulation. Here, we employed in vivo lineage tracing and real-time gene expression transgenic reporting methods to analyze the early embryonic transcription factor T-box gene 4 (TBX4), and determined that TBX4-lineage mesenchymal progenitors are the predominant source of myofibroblasts in injured adult lung. In a murine model, ablation of TBX4-expressing cells or disruption of TBX4 signaling attenuated lung fibrosis after bleomycin-induced injury. Furthermore, TBX4 regulated hyaluronan synthase 2 production to enable fibroblast invasion of matrix both in murine models and in fibroblasts from patients with severe pulmonary fibrosis. These data identify TBX4 as a mesenchymal transcription factor that drives accumulation of myofibroblasts and the development of lung fibrosis. FeII and α-ketoglutarate-dependent fat mass and obesity associated protein (FTO)-dependent demethylation of m6A is important for regulation of mRNA splicing and adipogenesis. Developing FTO-specific inhibitors can help probe the biology of FTO and unravel novel therapeutic targets for treatment of obesity or obesity-associated diseases. In the present paper, we have identified that 4-chloro-6-(6'-chloro-7'-hydroxy-2',4',4'-trimethyl-chroman-2'-yl)benzene-1,3-diol (CHTB) is an inhibitor of FTO. The crystal structure of CHTB complexed with human FTO reveals that the novel small molecule binds to FTO in a specific manner. Prolactin family 7, subfamily d, member 1 (PRL7D1) is found in mouse placenta. Our recent work showed that PRL7D1 is also present in mouse testis Leydig cells, and the expression of PRL7D1 in the testis exhibits an age-related increase. In the present study, we generated transgenic mice with Leydig cell-specific PRL7D1 overexpression to explore its function during male reproduction. Prl7d1 male mice exhibited subfertility as reflected by reduced sperm counts and litter sizes. The testes from Prl7d1 transgenic mice appeared histologically normal, but the frequency of apoptotic germ cells was increased. Prl7d1 transgenic mice also had lower testosterone concentrations than wild-type mice. Mechanistic studies revealed that Prl7d1 transgenic mice have defects in the testicular expression of steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (STAR) and hydroxy-delta-5-steroid dehydrogenase, 3 betaand steroid delta-isomerase cluster (HSD3B). Further studies revealed that PRL7D1 overexpression affected the expression of transferrin (TF) in Sertoli cells. These results suggest that PRL7D1 overexpression could lead to increased germ cell apoptosis and exert an inhibitory effect on testosterone production in Leydig cells by reducing the expression of certain steroidogenic-related genes. In addition, PRL7D1 appears to have important roles in the function of Sertoli cells, which, in turn, affects male fertility.
