This article examines the claims that the unique public-private television system of the 1980s provided space for the development of a national sense of community-based on common narratives and decentralization. The sources for the analysis included a revision of its contemporary discussion in printed media coupled with an analysis of TV shows currently available on streaming services and interviews with relevant figures of the time. The television content shot on location was praised for representing the nation, while simultaneously giving rise to debates about decentralization, which was finally addressed by the creation of regional broadcasters. The hybrid system fostered diversity, production quality, and a national representation that was strongly contested from the regions. At the same time, the system unintendedly hampered the creation of an audiovisual archive, and complaints about its tender systems resonate with the plight of contemporary public service broadcasting in Colombia. The article discusses soaring Colombian film production and mentions cinema laws that have allowed increase in production of film and jobs in creative industry. Topics discussed include decline in growth in film production and numbers of viewership, guises of violence in Colombia, and association of Latin American films with conflicts stemming from realities of each country on topics of drug trafficking, poverty and corruption.

Este ensayo busca evidenciar la relevancia que ha tenido la cultura pop en la amplia obra y fabulosa vida de Sergio Roncallo-Dow. Esta travesía nos lleva a vincular conceptos como el de habitar, el dasein y el mit-dasein de Heidegger, con el sensorium de Walter Benjamin, a través de la máxima de Marshall McLuhan, el medio es el mensaje. Se presentan tres campos de la vida y obra de Sergio que se entrelazan para dar cuenta de su aproximación al apotegma mcluhaniano. Este camino aborda la televisión en Colombia en la década de los ochenta, la escena de la música rock de la cual Sergio fue parte y su relación con los videojuegos y YouTube. Esta exploración nos permite ver algunas de sus sondas principales, su crítica a los modelos binarios y a la separación de la cultura popular y de élite, la centralidad de la imbricación entre técnica y cultura, y su propuesta de la comprensión de nuestra hibri-dación latinoamericana como nuestro punto de partida para entender-nos en la comunicación. Thepurpose of thispaper is to reflect on theproblem of (self-) representation in indigenous audiovisual production from a critical perspective. Although in principle it is possible to think of an autonomous and "pure" representation of the indigenous, our hypothesis here has to do with the concept of the white-ness and the presence of pre-existing forms of audiovisual aesthetics and narrative. The idea of an indigenous person who represents themselves from an apparent purity seems to dissolve in the mediation of hegemonic forms of construction of identity. The text does not pretend to make an exhaustive analysis of the audiovisual representation of indigeneity, this escapes our possibilities, but rather to think about the paradoxes that are hidden behind the idea of purity in the audiovisual representation and the need to recognize ourselves as a hybrid nation beyond the place of enunciation. McLuhan's idea of media as extensions of our physical senses has drawn considerable interest among communication scholars. In this article we present two media he addresses as representing extensions of human touch, or what he deems tactility, namely numbers and money. We discuss how the Canadian thinker positioned these media as extensions of the sense of touch, and what he meant by it, and how that conceptualization strikes us as both fascinating and practical because it allows us to grasp our current love of numbers and quantitative information. Our proposal seeks to enliven the debate around the abstract value of numbers and money, and provides a line of argument for expanding our understanding of media as extensions of our senses. Finally, we offer a discussion about our current times, how debt has gone beyond our grasp, and how the financial market becomes the oracle of the 25 unfathomable numbers that rule our economy. This paper addresses how different media production teams negotiate the use of their minority languages in their practice. After a brief discussion of the concepts of language and description of a linguistic minority, a short review of similar research in the area of Minority Language Media is presented. Within this area, radio producers from three linguistic and ethnic minorities in Colombia – Wayuu, Nasa and Creole – and four television and multimedia producers from the Welsh-speaking minority in Wales are taken as examples of negotiations of identity that take place in multilingual settings. The information gathered comes from interviews and participant observation of production practices. The research shows that the groups express their multi-layered identity and how they struggle to maintain the language and culture, simultaneously upholding professionalism and contesting negative stereotypes. Becoming immersed in a world where our perception of reality is highly mediated allows for the creation of an audiovisual lexicon that expands over many platforms and times. In this context we might observe the case of video games which, as a medium, does not limit themselves to the creation of puzzles to be solved, to pretend participation in the Rock and Roll world, or lead us to unexpected damages to our "flesh". Games allow us different levels of enjoyment and also lead us to discover the physical limits of our bodies within the expansion of our senses. Furthermore, hidden in many of these games we discover many hints, influences, remnants, appropriations and quotes, expanding the web of signs and significations far beyond the limits of the games themselves. However, the extent and consequences of video games as entertainment and communicational devices surpasses their potential for representation and signification, and even impact aspects of our lives such as our physiognomy and psychology-we experience carpal tunnel syndrome, addiction and withdrawal symptoms, and we delve in debates that isolate us or make us only socially able within the confines of virtual worlds. All in all, video games have become part and parcel of our existence, extensions of our perspectives of the world that surround us. Games shape our rational cognition, they build upon our new relational memories, but they also show the limitations of our physical rootedness. This article presents a methodological construction for research on small groups of minority media producers, especially those who are involved in multilingual settings. The set of qualitative tools are explained and their advantages and disadvantages explored, based on the literature on the subject. Then, the debate is contrasted with the practical experience of its application with minority language producers, indigenous and ethnic radio broadcasters in Colombia and audiovisual producers in Wales. The reflection upon the results leads to a final discussion that brings the adjustments required to increase the advantages and diminish the disadvantages of the proposed combined three-step methodology of an interview to the double (ITTD), a day of participant observation, and a final lengthier semi-structured interview. This paper presents a theoretical and methodological revision which clarifies and organizes the concepts on the trade of audiovisual products between different cultural markets. It explores the concept of cultural proximity (Straubhaar, 1991) and the latest discussions on cultural translation (Conway, 2012) and cultural universals and lacunae (Rohn, 2010, 2011). After analyzing the various academic perspectives, the paper proposes a new framework, which defines more clearly the terminology, thus making a tool for comparative studies of audiovisual trade. This framework is divided into four aspects: market, product, people and process. Previous concepts are narrowed down and new concepts are developed to fill in the conceptual gaps. This article sets a dialogue between the concept of medium – as presented by Marshall McLuhan– and the concept of myth –as articulated by Roland Barthes– to evidence their similar anchoring, and thus bring closer the work of these two thinkers, whose different starting points notwithstanding, converge conceptually to better grasp the notion of macromyth, and become aware of the bearing this construction has upon the renowned McLuhan statement: the medium is the message. This contribution stems from a personal interest in expanding Minority Language Media research into the Latin American context. It also arises from a desire to present some of the achievements of Communication for Social Change in Latin America to a European media studies community not acquainted with them. In order to do this, the paper begins by presenting the common ground between the two areas of studies. It draws attention to the fact that language is but one of many cultural aspects under which indigenous and ethnic communities are marginalised from and by the main media outlets in Latin America. Because of this, research into Latin American Minority Language Media needs to have a contextual approach that studies the processes of identity negotiation and participatory agency defined under the concepts of hybridity and convergence. It also demands for research to increase participation of its subjects of inquiry, as consistently requested by practitioners of Communication for Social Change. Latin America has suffered disproportionately during the COVID-19 pandemic. The human impact has been chaotically and catastrophically evident across the three countries we examine here: Colombia, Chile, and México. Those nations were already creaking under the effect of generations of neoliberal ideology: their intellectual, political, and ruling-class fractions had long-embraced its core project of redistributing income upwards and privatizing public goods, notably healthcare. In response to that raging inequality, uprisings had occurred through new citizen movements in 2019. They intensified in 2020 and 2021, as citizenship was enacted in powerful ways.
