Information literacy education is the mission and role of academic libraries. In recent years. following the development of higher education reform, Tsinghua University Library continuously strength- ened planning and practice of innovative information literacy education. We focused on capacity building and actively promoted cooperation with various departments on campus. conducted project-based exploration. and made efforts to integrate into the teaching and learning ecosystem, supporting the high-quality talent cultivation of the university, which has made certain progress. Liquid crystal (LC) research in China started during the Cultural Revolution years in the late 1960s. It was motivated partly by the potential application in liquid-crystal display (LCD) digital television (TV) and movies, deemed good for the government's political propaganda agenda. The large-screen LCD TV/ movie project was initiated and done at the Tsinghua University, Beijing, which became successful in 1976 with prototypes built. Although it never reached the commercial stage, the research achievement was world-leading then. Here, the history of this project and other LC research at the Tsinghua University in the 1970s and 1980s are described for the first time, with appropriate historical backgrounds provided. Tsinghua's significant contributions in basic LC research and a description of the founding and workings of the Chinese Liquid Crystal Society are also included. Since 1915, literature recommendation and acquisition began to appear in Tsinghua. Before the founding of new China, the recommendation and acquisition system based on professor's decision-making, has been running in Tsinghua University for 34 years. Based on the in-depth collation and review of literature, history archives and documents of recommendation and acquisition collected by Tsinghua library, this paper analyzes the status, mechanism and effect of acquisition of Tsinghua library in the period of the Republic of China, and expounds its enlightenment to the current library acquisition. Facing the profound changes of education modes, user demands, technical environments and the like, libraries need to make strategic thinking and active response in the aspects of functional positioning, innovation introduction, and ecological construction. Grasping the core line of resources and services, we have to build a collaborative and synergetic system in university libraries, which is an organic system featured with crisis awareness, flexible adaptability, strong adaptability and wide connectivity. Relying on the system, we can create the library's new direction, new kinetic energy and new ecology. The dysregulation of micro RNAs (miRNAs) is a crucial characteristic of human cancers. Herein, we observed frequent amplification of the MIR191/425 locus in breast cancer, which is correlated with poor survival outcome. We demonstrated that the miR-191/425 cluster binds the 3′ untranslated region of the DICER1 transcript and posttranscriptionally represses DICER1 expression, thereby impairing global miRNAs biogenesis. Functionally, the forced expression of miR-191 or miR-425 stimulated the proliferation, survival, migration and invasion of breast cancer cells, whereas the inhibition of miR-191 or miR-425 suppressed these oncogenic behaviors of breast cancer cells, in a manner dependent on miR-191/425-mediated downregulation of DICER1. Furthermore, the miR-191/425 cluster promoted breast tumor growth, invasion and metastasis in vivo. The let-7 family of miRNAs was downregulated upon forced expression of miR-191 or miR-425, with a corresponding increase in the levels of let-7 target, high-mobility group AT-hook 2 (HMGA2). The forced expression of let-7 partially abrogated the miR-191/425-mediated oncogenic effects in breast cancer cells, suggestive of let-7 as a downstream effector of the miR-191/425–DICER1 axis. Collectively, we proposed that the inhibition of global miRNA processing, through miR-191/425-mediated downregulation of DICER1, promotes breast cancer progression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Internationalization is an integral part of the strategies of leading Chinese universities to strive for world-class standing. It has left its marks on the academic life of China’s social scientists. This article explores the impact of internationalization on the academic life of Chinese social scientists using Tsinghua University as an example. Emphasis is placed on the transformation of their academic life in the process of internationalization. Employing a qualitative case study method, this research draws on approximately two thirds of the faculty members in the Department of Sociology to present in-depth insights into the dynamics and ecosystems of their academic life. The findings show that internationalization promotes the adoption of internationalized criteria in faculty recruitment and promotion mechanisms, stimulates enthusiasm for international activities, and strengthens internationally oriented (largely North American) norms and practices in research, teaching, and discipline development. In discussing these dimensions, this article argues that Tsinghua social scientists experience both benefits and costs as the university works hard to pursue world-class status, echoing their peers in China’s other top institutions of higher education. Since the late nineteenth century, China, as a latecomer to modernization, has prioritized Western learning. The first modern university was created in China in 1895 to serve such a purpose with little linkage to China’s rich indigenous cultural traditions. Modelled on European and North American experiences and operating in a Confucian socio-cultural context, Chinese universities have long been struggling with their cultural identity. In line with recent development, China’s higher education has made impressive progress, and cultural experiment has been placed increasingly highly on the agenda. With an understanding of Chinese and Western knowledges by the elites, China’s very best universities have the promise to integrate both traditions in their day-to-day operation. Such a bi-culturality, or even multi-culturality, is in stark contrast to the still largely mono-cultural university operation environment in the West. The integration would open spaces for Chinese universities to explore an alternative to Western models that have dominated world’s higher education since Western industrialization. Based on fieldwork at Peking and Tsinghua Universities in Beijing, this article reports some findings from a three-year project supported by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council. It attempts to suggest a different angle to observe China’s experience in higher education. It argues that cultural experiment would enable top Chinese universities to bring back their cultural traditions to integrate with Western values, and thus contribute to inter-civilizational dialogue. As a leading university in engineering education in China, Tsinghua University implemented industrial ecology (IE) education in the 1990s. This article describes the evolution of IE education at Tsinghua. Tsinghua mainstreams IE education into green education and engineering education not only by establishing independent courses of IE for both undergraduate and graduate students, but also by incorporating IE principles and knowledge modules into an increasing number of courses. During 2002-2015, a total of 1,023 undergraduates from 33 schools and departments participated in an IE course. To cope with the diversity of participants, four knowledge modules were customized for an undergraduate course: concepts and history; methods and tools; topics and applications; and policy and perspectives. Meanwhile, an interdisciplinary teaching method was adopted by inviting experts from diverse disciplines and organizing group discussions. Though the course has received strong positive feedback, four challenges still remain in IE education: defining the knowledge boundary, presenting an integrated view, utilizing an interdisciplinary methodology, and cultivating a class culture. This study suggests that the so-called “Jinteng” manuscript held by Qinghua University should be read independently of its received counterpart. When read on its own terms, the manuscript provides a straightforward account of rituals surrounding the Duke of Zhou’s ascension to the throne after the demise of King Wu. As such it represents a continuation of King Wu’s abdication in favor of his meritorious brother, as recorded in the Yi Zhou shu. Read in this light, the fourth century BCE manuscript provides further evidence for the prominence of abdication doctrines during the Warring States period, an intellectual tradition that was deemed subversive in the early empire and became gradually obliterated over the course of the Qin-Han dynasties. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine green university initiatives in the context of China, using Tsinghua University, which is China’s green university pioneer, as a case study. Design/methodology/approach – The research method used for this paper is a case study based on participant observation and document analysis. The approach to data collection includes the examination of archive records, yearbooks and statistical information regarding Tsinghua University. Findings – This paper finds that Tsinghua’s green university initiative is a response to Tsinghua’s strategy of establishing a word-class university, with a goal of bearing more responsibility in promoting a sustainable society. Tsinghua employs one principle (green university) and three dimensions (green education, green research and green campus) to frame its green university initiative. Tsinghua’s green university initiative has earned many achievements, but it has also faced many challenges, such as ignoring social justice, fragmented coordination efforts and the lack of effective communication and assessment mechanisms. Practical implications – As a leading university and the pioneering green university in the country, Tsinghua University is very influential with regard to the development of green universities in China. Many other universities have designed their own programs based on Tsinghua’s experiences in the green university initiative. As such, Tsinghua’s experiences provide reference values to other universities in China. Originality/value – This paper comprehensively examines the evolution, framework, achievements and challenges of the green university initiative of Tsinghua University. Higher education, an integral part of China's nation-building project, is a critical element in China's strategic policy initiative of building national strength through science and education. One way to achieve this goal is to develop a higher education system of international stature. Perhaps more than any other country, through national programs such as 211 and 985, China has been explicit in selecting its best universities for intensive investment, with the expressed aim of making them world-class within coming decades, and contributing more to overall R&D and scientific development. Analysing how these top-tier universities in China are reaching for the gold standard, and using Tsinghua University as an example, this article examines the role of higher education in China's rise and how Chinese universities are responding to the drive for innovation, against a background of globalisation and internationalisation. It analyses the experience of Tsinghua, a Chinese flagship university, sometimes dubbed 'China's MIT', through an in-depth case study in an international context, seeking to answer the question of how far Tinsghua embodies the qualities of a world-class university.
