The Late Jurassic deposits of the Boulonnais area (N-France) represents the proximal lateral-equivalent of the Kimmeridge Clay Formation; they accumulated on a clastic-dominated ramp subject to synsedimentary faulting in relation with the northward propagation of the Atlantic rifting. Within the terrigenous accumulations, some carbonate objects are visible at various conspicuous levels: oyster patch reefs and fine-grained carbonate beds, either continuous, or more or less nodular. Preliminary studies demonstrated that the carbonate beds of the Bancs Jumeaux Formation as well as the carbonate matrix of the oyster patch reefs are of diagenetic origin. In this paper, we extend the study to many other limestone beds of the Boulonnais with mud- or wackestone texture, examining facies and microfacies through various techniques as well as geochemical data (O, C and S stable isotopes, major and trace elements). We conclude that all examined carbonate bodies are of early diagenetic origin and that they precipitated at, or close to, the sea bed, from seawater mixing with ascending fluids containing isotopically light carbon of organic origin. Fluid circulation was probably induced by the extensional block-faulting segmentation of the northern margin of the Boulonnais Basin in Late Jurassic times. Abstract: The Late Jurassic deposits of the Boulonnais area (N-France) represent the proximal lateral-equivalent of the Kimmeridge Clay Formation; they accumulated on a clastic-dominated ramp subject to synsedimentary faulting as a result of the Atlantic Ocean rifting. In the Gris-Nez Cape area, i.e., close to the northern border fault zone of the Jurassic basin, the Late Jurassic sequence contains small-dimensioned oyster patch reefs (<1 m) that are specifically observed at the base of an abrupt deepening trend in the depositional sequence induced by well-defined pulses of normal fault activity. Petrographic analysis of these patch reefs shows that they are exclusively composed of Nanogyra nana embedded in a microsparitic calcite matrix. ™13C measurements, carried out within both the matrix and the shells, display significantly lower values in the matrix compared to the oyster shells which suggests that the carbonate matrix precipitation was involving a carbon source different from marine dissolved inorganic carbon, most probably related to sulfate reduction, which is evidenced by light ™34S in pyrites. Similarities but also differences with lucinid-rich bioconstructions, namely, the Late Jurassic pseudo-bioherms of Beauvoisin (SE-France) suggest that the patch reefs developed at hydrocarbon seeps are related to synsedimentary faults. The extensional block-faulting segmentation of the northern margin of the Boulonnais Basin in Late Jurassic times is thus believed to have induced a sort of small-dimension hydrocarbon seepage field, recorded by the patch reef distribution. Abstract: Patterns of uranium–molybdenum covariation in marine sediments have the potential to provide insights regarding depositional conditions and processes in paleoceanographic systems. Specifically, such patterns can be used to assess bottom water redox conditions, the operation of metal-oxyhydroxide particulate shuttles in the water column, and the degree of water mass restriction. The utility of this paleoenvironmental proxy is due to the differential geochemical behavior of U and Mo: (1) uptake of authigenic U by marine sediments begins at the Fe(II)–Fe(III) redox boundary (i.e., suboxic conditions), whereas authigenic Mo enrichment requires the presence of H2S (i.e., euxinic conditions), and (2) transfer of aqueous Mo to the sediment may be enhanced through particulate shuttles, whereas aqueous U is unaffected by this process. In the present study, we examine U–Mo covariation in organic-rich sediments deposited mostly in the western Tethyan region during oceanic anoxic events (OAEs) of Early Jurassic to Late Cretaceous age. Our analysis generally confirms existing interpretations of redox conditions in these formations but provides significant new insights regarding water mass restriction and the operation of particulate shuttles in depositional systems. These insights will help to address contentious issues pertaining to the character and origin of Mesozoic OAEs, such as the degree to which regional paleoceanographic factors controlled the development of the OAEs. Abstract: In the geosphere, germanium (Ge) has a chemical behavior close to that of silicon (Si), and Ge commonly substitutes for Si (in small proportions) in silicates. Studying the evolution of the respective proportions of Ge and Si through time allows us to better constrain the global Si cycle. The marine inventory of Ge present as dissolved germanic acid is facing two main sinks known through the study of present sediments: 1) incorporation into diatom frustules and transfer to sediments by these “shuttles”, 2) capture of Ge released to pore water through frustule dissolution by authigenic mineral phases forming within reducing sediments. Our goals are to determine whether such a bio-induced transfer of Ge is also achieved by radiolarian and whether Ge could be trapped directly from seawater into authigenic phases with no intervention of opal-secreting organisms (shuttles). To this end, we studied two Paleozoic radiolarite formations and geological formations dated of Devonian, Jurassic and Cretaceous, deposited under more or less drastic redox conditions. Our results show that the Ge/Si values observed for these radiolarites are close to (slightly above) those measured from modern diatoms and sponges. In addition, our results confirm what is observed with some present-day reducing sediments: the ancient sediments that underwent reducing depositional conditions are authigenically enriched in Ge. Furthermore, it is probable that at least a part of the authigenic Ge came directly from seawater. The recurrence and extent (through time and space) of anoxic conditions affecting sea bottoms have been quite important through the geological times; consequently, the capture of Ge by reducing sediments must have impacted Ge distribution and in turn, the evolution of the seawater Ge/Si ratio. Abstract: Modern low-oxygen marine systems exhibit patterns of molybdenum–uranium covariation that can be linked to specific attributes and processes of the depositional system, including (1) variation in benthic redox conditions, (2) the operation of particulate shuttles within the water column, and (3) the evolution of watermass chemistry. The importance of these factors in each depositional system can be assessed both from the degree of enrichment of authigenic molybdenum (Moauth) and uranium (Uauth) and from the (Mo/U)auth ratio of the sediment relative to the seawater Mo/U molar ratio of ∼7.5–7.9. In open-ocean systems with suboxic bottomwaters, Uauth enrichment tends to exceed that of Moauth owing to onset of Uauth accumulation at the Fe(II)–Fe(III) redox boundary, resulting in sediment (Mo/U)auth ratios less than that of seawater. As bottomwaters become increasingly reducing and at least occasionally sulfidic, the rate of accumulation of Moauth increases relative to that of Uauth, and sediment (Mo/U)auth ratios equal or exceed that of seawater. In restricted marine systems with permanently sulfidic deepwaters, the relative enrichment of Moauth and Uauth depends on additional factors. In the Cariaco Basin, which has an aqueous Mo/U ratio similar to that of seawater, the operation of a particulate Mn–Fe-oxyhydroxide shuttle serves to accelerate the transfer of Mo to the seafloor, leading to strong enrichments in Moauth relative to Uauth. In the Black Sea, the chemistry of the deep watermass has evolved to the point where its aqueous Mo/U ratio is only ∼0.04 that of seawater, as a consequence of which sediments deposited under deepwater influence are depleted in Moauth relative to Uauth. These Mo–U covariation patterns can be used to gain a better understanding of the watermass attributes and processes of ancient low-oxygen marine systems. Analysis of anoxic facies from two North American paleomarine systems, the Late Pennsylvanian Midcontinent Sea (LPMS) and the Late Devonian Seaway (LDS), reveals authigenic Mo–U relationships similar to those of the modern marine environments above, implying similar redox and hydrographic controls. The observed patterns are consistent with laterally unconfined circulation and strong watermass exchange within the LPMS, and with markedly restricted deepwater circulation in silled basins of the LDS. Patterns of authigenic Mo–U covariation may prove useful in analysis of other paleoceanographic systems to reveal aspects of watermass composition and environmental dynamics. The Late Devonian was a period of drastic environmental changes, as exemplified by a major biotic crisis at the Frasnian–Famennian boundary (FFB) and the onset in Famennian times of glaciations across southern Gondwana. Worldwide evidence for the coeval development of the major Acadian–Eovariscan belt led us to propose a model relating the Late Frasnian–Famennian environmental perturbations to extensive continental uplift through two atmospheric CO2-depleting mechanisms: (1) the intensification of silicate weathering on the continental areas as attested by a major rise in the87Sr/86Sr composition of sea water at the FFB; and (2) the massive burial of organic carbon (Kellwasser events) in partially confined basins due to the collisional-induced reduction of equatorial oceanic communications between the Palaeotethysian and Panthalassic oceans. The Frasnian–Famennian (F-F) transition is well exposed in the basinal setting of La Serre (Montagne Noire, France), where oxygen-deficient conditions prevailed in bottom environments. In this paper, we study the F-F transition using inorganic geochemistry (notably, major elements, redox-sensitive and/or sulphide-forming trace metals, and productivity proxies). The results are compared with published data concerning the La Serre section, other F-F sections and other geological formations also deposited in basinal settings. The very high enrichment in redox and productivity tracers indicates that anoxic conditions prevailed across the F-F boundary, and that surface productivity was intense. Such deep-water restricted conditions coupled with high productivity occurred in various places in Late Devonian oceans. Recycling alone cannot account for the intense nutrient supply and therefore the most probable source was via land runoff. Mudstones from the Argiles de Châtillon Formation exposed in the Boulonnais region of Northern France represent a proximal lateral equivalent of the organic-rich Kimmeridge Clay Formation. The Argiles de Châtillon Formation is composed of two subunits that straddle the Kimmeridgian–Tithonian boundary. Each subunit contains an organic-rich interval. The two conspicuous organic-rich intervals have been linked to either periods of high sea level or greenhouse warming. Here, we use palynology to further understand climate and environmental mechanisms that drove organic matter enrichment. We use bulk organic carbon isotope records (δ13Corg) to correlate the Boulonnais sections with those of the Kimmeridge Clay Formation. The palynological results suggest that the stratigraphically lower organic-rich interval (Kimmeridgian) was deposited under suboxic to anoxic stratified conditions. A large-scale climate shift from cooler/humid to warmer/arid conditions marked the Kimmeridgian–Tithonian boundary, influencing organic matter enrichment in the stratigraphically higher organic-rich interval (Tithonian). In contrast with the lower organic-rich interval, there are no indications of stratified conditions for the higher organic-rich interval. Within this thicker organic-rich interval, cyclic variations in amorphous organic matter distribution, total organic carbon and δ13Corg trends on a 2 m scale are observed. They co-occur with fluctuations of the palynological assemblages, indicative of more humid versus arid climate conditions, likely alternating on a ∼100 kyr eccentricity timescale. Our results show that under the most humid phases of these overall arid climate conditions, sulfurization of carbohydrates was the dominant control on organic matter preservation. Rapid and profound changes in earth surface environments and biota across the Permian-Triassic boundary are well known and relate to the end-Permian mass extinction event. This major crisis is demonstrated by abrupt facies change and the development of microbialite carbonates on the shallow marine shelves around Palaeo-Tethys and western Panthalassa. Microbialites have been described from a range of sites in end-Permian and basal Triassic marine sedimentary rocks, immediately following the end-Permian mass extinction. Here, we present geochemical data primarily focused on microbialites. Our geochemical analysis shows that U, V, Mo and REE (Ce anomaly) may be used as robust redox proxies so that the microbialites record the chemistry of the ancient ambient sea water. Among the three trace metals reputed to be reliable redox proxies, one (V) is correlated here with terrigenous supply, the other two elements (U and Mo) do not show any significant authigenic enrichment, thereby indicating that oxic conditions prevailed during the growth of microbialites. REE profiles show a prominent negative Ce anomaly, also showing that the shallow marine waters were oxic. Our geochemical data are consistent with the presence of some benthic organisms (ostracods, scattered microgastropods, microbrachiopods and foraminifers) in shallow marine waters that survived the mass extinction event. The fine-grained sediments of the Cariaco Basin, Venezuela, of the last 130 ky, whose deposition history is well characterized, were analyzed geochemically in order to test the validity of sediment bulk geochemistry as an indicator of detrital provenance. Several binary and ternary diagrams as well as the chemical index of alteration (CIA) were tested for their capacity to discriminate the poorly contrasted detrital sources to the Cariaco Basin, and to describe the temporal evolution of the contributions of these different sources. Most of the diagrams tested did not allow a good discrimination of sources or, when sources were well discriminated, did not allow an interpretation of the temporal variations consistent with the known history. A relatively good discrimination of sources and a consistent interpretation of temporal variations were however obtained using Hf vs. Th and La/Yb vs. Gd/Yb binary diagrams, as well as Ti–Zr–Th, Ti–Zr–La, and Lu–Hf–Th ternary diagrams. Compared to the previous studies of the detrital content of the Cariaco Basin sediments, the geochemical approach permitted the recognition of a sediment contribution eroded from the Unare platform and Gulf of Cariaco during rapid sea level oscillations, and the contribution of Saharan eolian particles during the Younger Dryas–Preboreal and MIS6-5 transition. The choice of plotted elements was determined after considering carrier minerals, so that different elements may be informative in different sedimentary contexts. Overall, mineral sorting during transport appears as a major limit to quantitative estimation of the different contributions. In particular mineral sorting leads to the selective enrichment of elements associated with clays (Al, Rb, Th and LREE) in sediments deposited in the basin. Unless the geochemical effect of mineral sorting can be measured, it appears that quantitative provenance analysis should be performed on fractions of similar grain size instead of bulk sediment. Abstract: A high resolution analysis of the clay–mineral content of sediments of the Cariaco Basin spanning the last climatic cycle was performed in order to determine how the detrital sedimentation in the basin records climatic oscillations at various timescales. At the scale of glacial–interglacial cycles, the clay–mineral content records changes in the geographic origin of the detrital supply, from a dominantly kaolinite- and smectite-rich southern source during glacial to a more illite-rich northerly source during interglacials. Though possibly influenced by eustatic variations, these changes mostly reflect the latitudinal fluctuations of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ). The Eemian shows an increased contribution from the northern source compared to the Holocene. During MIS3, seasonality modulates the effect of ITCZ position and leads to increased smectite contribution. Fluctuations of the smectite and kaolinite contents during Dansgaard/Oeschger cycles reflect changes of runoff intensity. Enhanced supplies in kaolinite during Heinrich-like events and stadials also suggest remobilizations of sediments deposited on the Unare platform resulting from rapid sea-level variations. The Younger Dryas is characterized by a significantly different clay–mineral association reflecting a drastic modification of terrigenous supply. An eolian contribution would explain this peculiar mineralogy, although local contributions cannot be ruled out. Abstract: Mineralogical and sedimentological records from the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) reveal major changes in the terrigenous particles provenance during the Marine Isotopic Stage 3 (MIS3) that likely resulted from modifications of the environmental conditions – including glacial activity and precipitation distribution – over the North American continent. The southeastern margin of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) was active throughout the entire MIS3, whereas the southwestern margin contributed to short-term meltwater events only during late MIS3. Some of the major mineralogical changes cannot be attributed to glacial activity but rather result from the changes in precipitation distribution. Combining sedimentological records from the GOM with previously published climate-related archives from the North American continent allows the reconstruction of two main schematic patterns of moisture inflow and precipitation distribution that may have prevailed during MIS3. Meltwater discharges contribute to modifying the LIS configuration and the GOM hydrological properties, ultimately affecting large-scale oceanic circulation and may have influenced atmospheric re-organizations although the insolation variation rate appears to be the main driver of the system. Abstract: During the last deglaciation, the decaying Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) delivered huge volumes of meltwater toward the Gulf of Mexico. The present investigation of clay mineralogy and grain-size characteristics of terrigenous sediments deposited in the Orca Basin (Gulf of Mexico) offers a unique opportunity to link the marine record of these meltwater floods with the reconstructed continental glacial history and the modeled drainage patterns. Five peculiar sedimentary levels, characterized by high smectite content and low CaCO3 content, were identified and occurred simultaneously with major meltwater floods. According to recently published clay mineral distribution maps for North America, these results help to pinpoint the southwestern margin of the LIS as a main contributor to most of the meltwater discharges. In addition, the peculiar mineralogical composition (illite and chlorite-rich) of the sediments characterizing the meltwater episode associated with Heinrich event 1 suggests a provenance from the Great Lakes area, supporting the interpretation of destabilization of the LIS southeastern margin during this event. Decreased terrigenous contribution associated with changing provenance of sediments after 12.9cal ka BP suggests strong modifications of the continental hydrography in relation to Lake Agassiz history and changes in the morphology of Mississippi delta due to rising sea level. Magnetic susceptibility (MS) was measured with high resolution (5 mm) on a 9 m long, 14C dated core from Lake Le Bourget (Savoie, France), spanning the last 7200 years. The strong correlation (R = 0.85) of the MS with the silicate-borne suite of elements (Si, Al, Fe, Mg, K) and anti-correlation with the carbonate content (R = -0.87) allows it to be used as a proxy for the fluctuations of the abundance of riverborne clastic fraction versus authigenic carbonates in sediment. As the Rhône is the only river bringing a significant amount of silicate minerals to the coring site, the MS downstream is interpreted as a proxy of the Rhône suspended load discharge in Lake Le Bourget. This is confirmed over the last 3000 years by the good match with the evolution of hydrological activity of the Rhône as it is known through geomorphological studies of well-dated archaeological sites. Over the last 7200 years, the record is consistent with the regional record of lake water-level fluctuations. While the intensity of the MS signal might be widely affected by the human impact on soil stability, the timing of the period of enhanced hydrological activity appears to be mostly climate-related, and should thus constitute a first step toward a high-resolution (<8 yr) continuous history of hydrological conditions in the NW Alps. The Middle Volgian Kashpir Oil Shales Formation, located on the Russian Platform, is a lateral equivalent of the North Sea and West Siberian petroleum source rocks. In the Volga Basin, this formation is 6 m thick and shows alternations of marls and black shales. The organic carbon content is often higher than 1%, although bioturbation and benthos are abundant, even in the black shales. In the marls, highly degraded organic matter (OM) dominates, while aliphatic, sulphur-rich OM is dominant in the black shales. The combination of sedimentological and geochemical studies allowed to determine that the redox conditions of the sediment regularly fluctuated from oxic to anoxic, under relatively productive waters, while climatic conditions were increasingly arid. It is proposed that OM deposition occurred in relation to the increasing aridity, through the combination of recurrent disruption of salinity stratification and aeolian supply of iron, which both promoted phytoplankton productivity. Dating recent lake sediment records yielding disturbed 210 Pb profiles has been a problem of wide interest in palaeoclimatic and palaeoseismic studies over the last few centuries. When applied to an alpine lake sedimentary record, a high-resolution sedimentological study reveals that the 210 Pb profile is disturbed by the occurrence of single-event deposits triggered by two different mechanisms: flood events deposits and gravity reworking. Removing disturbed layers from the 210 Pb profile yields a logarithmic depth–activity relationship. Using a simple 210 Pb decay model (CFCS) provides an assessment of mean accumulation rate of `continuous sedimentation', as opposed to `event-linked sedimentation'. The correlation of the thickest four gravity-reworked deposits with historically known earthquakes permits both validation and refinement of the age–depth relationship. Marine authigenic carbonates form shallow-water microbialites, mud mounds, and hydrocarbon-seep deposits and contain appreciable amounts of trace elements that yield information on paleoenvironments. Element patterns of some of these carbonates archive metabolic processes through geologic time since many trace elements are redox-sensitive and participate in biological cycling. Trace element distributions in microbial carbonates not only yield information on the redox state of ancient oceans, but also on the chemical evolution of Earth's hydrosphere and atmosphere. Trace element patterns can be used to distinguish marine from freshwater sources, to estimate water depth, and can help identify microbial metabolisms through time. A major issue concerning the use of marine carbonates as a paleoenvironmental archive is assessing the degree of early and late diagenetic alteration, which can modify or even reset the original content and distribution of trace elements. The degree and effect of early and late diagenetic alteration can be evaluated by comparing element contents to organic and other inorganic geochemical proxies. Authigenic hydrocarbon-seep carbonates forming in seafloor sediments are the product of microbial oxidation of methane and other hydrocarbon compounds. Seep carbonates are excellent archives, whose trace element contents yield information on sedimentary redox processes, as well as information on seepage intensity and fluid composition. Trace elements serve as proxies in these highly dynamic environments shaped by fluid seepage and chemosynthesis, and can help to reconstruct the evolution of chemosynthesis-based life at seeps through the Phanerozoic. The past evolution of the Southern Ocean, one of the major components of the climatic system, is still a matter of debate. This study provides new insights into the deep Southern Ocean circulation based on the radiogenic isotopes and clay mineralogical signature of the terrigenous fractions transported by the main deep water masses to sediments recovered in core MD07-3076Q from the central South Atlantic. This approach successfully permits: (1) provenance identification of the various grain-size fractions (clay, cohesive silt and sortable silt); (2) assignment of each grain-size fraction to a specific water-mass; (3) reconstruction of past changes in the main deep water-mass pathways. These data document the evolution of deep-water masses in the South Atlantic Ocean during the last deglaciation. The Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) speed and northward extension were maximum at the end of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), associated with strong bottom water production in the Weddell Sea, together with a vigorous Lower Circumpolar Deep Water (LCDW). In contrast the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) circulation was weaker than today. The onset of the deglaciation (from 17.5 ka to 15 ka, ∼Heinrich Stadial 1, HS 1) was marked by weakening and southerly retreat of the AABW and by an increase of mixing between AABW and LCDW. The speed of the AABW remained at its lowest during the Bølling Allerød (B/A) and the Younger Dryas (YD), and the LCDW slowed and retreated to the south, while the NADW progressively migrated southward, deepened, and strengthened between the beginning of the Bølling Allerød and the Holocene (from ∼15 to 10 ka). • Radiogenic isotopes and clay mineralogy of detrital sediment in the South Atlantic. • Composition of detrital particles transported by deep water masses. • Reconstruction of deep water mass speeds and latitudinal extensions. • Enhancing/reduction of northern/southern born water masses during the deglaciation. • Significant AABW northward spreading and fastening at the end of the LGM.
