Transient implantable piezoelectric materials are desirable for biosensing, drug delivery, tissue regeneration, and antimicrobial and tumor therapy. For use in the human body, they must show flexibility, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. These requirements are challenging for conventional inorganic piezoelectric oxides and piezoelectric polymers. We discovered high piezoelectricity in a molecular crystal HOCH2(CF2)3CH2OH [2,2,3,3,4,4-hexafluoropentane-1,5-diol (HFPD)] with a large piezoelectric coefficient d33 of ~138 picocoulombs per newton and piezoelectric voltage constant g33 of ~2450 × 10−3 volt-meters per newton under no poling conditions, which also exhibits good biocompatibility toward biological cells and desirable biodegradation and biosafety in physiological environments. HFPD can be composite with polyvinyl alcohol to form flexible piezoelectric films with a d33 of 34.3 picocoulombs per newton. Our material demonstrates the ability for molecular crystals to have attractive piezoelectric properties and should be of interest for applications in transient implantable electromechanical devices. An ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor was originally designed by using ZnIn2S4/ReS2 as a photoactive material and AgInS2 as a signal amplifier. The signal amplifier AgInS2 was incubated on the terminal of H-DNA (immobilized on the ZnIn2S4/ReS2/FTO surface), leading to an enhanced photocurrent response. Then, due to the introduction of DNA2, the formation of a double-stranded structure caused AgInS2 to keep away from the electrode surface, and the photocurrent was reduced. In the presence of kanamycin, DNA2 was released from the system due to the competition relationship, and a restored photocurrent response was obtained. The combination of ZnIn2S4/ReS2 and AgInS2 accelerated the electron transfer and enhanced the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron–hole pairs, resulting in an improved performance of the PEC aptasensor, which was capable of accurate and sensitive detection of kanamycin in actual samples. Abstract Investigating the behavior of droplets impacting on stainless steel wire mesh is of great importance. Previous studies focused on the impact phenomena of a whole wire mesh, without detailed function of each composing unit. In this work, the impact on two basic units of the single fiber and the intersection of two crossing fibers was systemically investigated. The dispersion processes of the droplets were recorded by a high-speed camera at various conditions of the droplet velocities, initial droplet sizes, and impacted object shapes. Three dripping modes of one-drop, double-drop, and ligament were observed when droplets impact on one single fiber. Two disintegration modes of four-part and two-part were found with crossing fibers. Correlations of the maximum spreading length of the droplet on the fiber of wire mesh were proposed, and the predicted values were in a good agreement with the experimental values. Inorganic perovskite ferroelectrics are widely used in nonvolatile memory elements, capacitors, and sensors because of their excellent ferroelectric and other properties. Organic ferroelectrics are desirable for their mechanical flexibility, low weight, environmentally friendly processing, and low processing temperatures. Although almost a century has passed since the first ferroelectric, Rochelle salt, was discovered, examples of highly desirable organic perovskite ferroelectrics are lacking. We found a family of metal-free organic perovskite ferroelectrics with the characteristic three-dimensional structure, among which MDABCO (N-methyl-N’-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium)Ðammonium triiodide has a spontaneous polarization of 22 microcoulombs per square centimeter [close to that of barium titanate (BTO)], a high phase transition temperature of 448 kelvins (above that of BTO), and eight possible polarization directions. In this study, we used two cucumber ( Cucumis sativus L.) cultivars with different salt tolerances, Jinyou NO.4 (salt-sensitive) and Inbred line 9930 (salt-tolerant), to investigate the effects of salt stress (75 mM of NaCl) on photosynthesis and antioxidant capacity in cucumber leaves. The results showed that the plant height, fresh weight, and dry weight of the seedlings from the two cultivars were decreased under salt stress. The restrained degree of growth parameters induced by NaCl was more serious in Jinyou NO.4 than in Inbred line 9930. Salt stress caused significant decreases in photosynthetic pigment content, chl a / b , Pn, Gs and Tr in the leaves of the two cultivars. Ci content was increased in Jinyou NO.4, and it was decreased in Inbred line 9930. Moreover, Fv/Fm, ΦPSII, qP, NPQ, and the mRNA expression levels of RbcL , RbcS and RCA were decreased in the two cucumber leaves under salt stress, and the effects of salt stress on Jinyou NO.4 were more serious. Meanwhile, the activities and encoding gene expression levels of SOD, POD, CAT, and APX were increased before being decreased under salt stress. These expression levels were greater in Inbred line 9930 than in Jinyou NO.4. NaCl stress-induced TGase activity, gene expression and bound PAs contents were higher in Inbred line 9930. Salt stress increased the MDA content and O 2 ∙－ generation rate in cucumber leaves, especially in Jinyou NO.4. These results suggested that salt-tolerant cultivars could enhance salinity tolerance by regulating photosynthetic efficiency and antioxidant capacity compared with the salt-sensitive cultivar. Molecular piezoelectrics are attracting tremendous interest because of their easy processing, light weight, low acoustical impedance, and mechanical flexibility. However, reports of molecular piezoelectrics with a piezoelectric coefficient d33 comparable to piezoceramics such as barium titanate (BTO, 90-190 pC/N) have been scarce. Here, we present a uniaxial molecular ferroelectric, trimethylchloromethylammonium tribromocadmium(II) (TMCM-CdBr3), in which the halogen bonding might be a possible critical point for the stabilization of one-dimensional (1D) {CdBr3}- chain and further reservation of its ferroelectricity in such organic- inorganic hybrid crystalline systems. It has a large d33 of 139 pC/N, 1 order of magnitude higher than those of most classically uniaxial ferroelectrics such as LiNbO3 (6-16 pC/N) and Rochelle salt (~7 pC/N), and comparable with those of multiaxial ferroelectrics such as BTO and trimethylbromomethylammonium tribromomanganese(II) (112 pC/N). Moreover, the simple single-crystal growth and easyto- find polar axis enable it to hold a great potential for applying in the single-crystal form. In light of the strong, specific, and directional halogen-bonding interactions, this work provides possibilities to explore new classes of molecular piezoelectrics and contribute to further developments. To date, the field of ferroelectric random access memories (FeRAMs) is mainly dominated by inorganic ferroelectric thin films like Pb(Zr,Ti)O3, which suffer from the issues of environmental harmfulness, high processing temperatures, and high fabrication costs. In these respects, molecular ferroelectric thin films are particularly advantageous and thus become promising alternatives to the conventional inorganic ones. For the prospect of FeRAMs applications, they should fulfill the requirements of effective polarization switching and low-voltage, high-speed operation. Despite recent advancements, molecular ferroelectric thin films with such high performance still remain a huge blank. Herein we present the first example of a large-area continuous biaxial molecular ferroelectric thin film that gets very close to the goal of application in FeRAMs: [Hdabco]BF4 (dabco = diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane). In addition to excellent film performance, it is the coexistence of a low coercive voltage of ~12 V and ultrafast polarization switching at a significantly high frequency of 20 kHz that affords [Hdabco]BF4 considerable potential for memory devices. Particularly, piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) clearly demonstrates the four polarization directions and polarization switching at a low voltage down to ~4.2 V (with an ~150 nm thick film). This innovative work on high-performance molecular ferroelectric thin films, which can be compatible with wearable devices, will inject new vitality to the low-power information field. As an important heptapeptide toxin, microcystine-LR (MC-LR) has attracted extensive attention because of its great harm to animals, plants and plankton in water. Therefore, an ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical aptasensor based on ZnIn 2 S 4 /CdSe heterojunction was disigned to monitor MC-LR. In this strategy, the ZnIn 2 S 4 /CdSe heterojunction with matching energy levels was used as the substrate of the aptasensor. By reason of the effective separation of electrons and holes, the heterojunction exhibited wide light absorption region and increased light utilization rate, resulting in a higher electrical signal. The specific recognition of MC-LR depend on the precise binding with aptamer, which modified on the electrode through base complementary pairing. In the presence of MC-LR, MC-LR was specific recognized by MC-LR aptamer, the photocurrent signal amplifier Bi 2 S 3 was released from the aptasensor electrode, leading to a decreased photocurrent. The designed photoelectrochemical aptasensor showed an ultrasensitive detection for MC-LR with a wide response range from 10-1 to 10-8 µM, and lower detection limit of 0.55 × 10-8 µM (3σ/S). Ferroelectrics are inseparable from symmetry breaking. Accompanying the paraelectric-to-ferroelectric phase transition, the paraelectric phase adopting one of the 32 crystallographic point groups is broken into subgroups belonging to one of the 10 ferroelectric point groups, i.e. C1, C2, C1h, C2v, C4, C4v, C3, C3v, C6 and C6v. The symmetry breaking is captured by the order parameter known as spontaneous polarization, whose switching under an external electric field results in a typical ferroelectric hysteresis loop. In addition, the responses of spontaneous polarization to other external excitations are related to a number of physical effects such as second-harmonic generation, piezoelectricity, pyroelectricity and dielectric properties. Based on these, this review summarizes recent developments in molecular ferroelectrics since 2011 and focuses on the relationship between symmetry breaking and ferroelectricity, offering ideas for exploring high-performance molecular ferroelectrics. Background The optimal management of elderly patients with displaced acetabular fractures remains controversial. This paper aims to summarize the clinical results of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and the possible factors influencing them. Methods Radiographic and clinical data on 52 elderly patients with displaced acetabular fractures that were treated by ORIF between May 2000 and May 2008 were retrospectively analysed. Data, such as fracture type (Letournel's classification system), quality of reduction, clinical outcomes (Harris hip score and modified Merle d’Aubigne-Postel score), and radiological outcomes (Matta score), were evaluated. Results Good to excellent clinical and radiological outcomes were recorded in 43 (82.7%) and 37 patients (71.2%), respectively. Acetabular fractures without radiographic features, such as quadrilateral plate fracture, Gull sign, posterior dislocation of hip, posterior wall marginal impaction, comminuted posterior wall fracture, and femoral head injury, can still achieve good to excellent outcomes. However, patients with the abovementioned radiographic features tend to achieve fair or poor outcomes. When an acetabular fracture with the aforementioned features, except for femoral head injury, can achieve and maintain anatomic reduction until complete fracture healing, the difference between fractures with and without the radiographic features is no longer significant. The results indicate that the outcomes are more affected by reduction rather than radiographic features. Conclusion ORIF may be suggested for displaced acetabular fractures in the elderly. Good to excellent outcomes and a high degree of patient satisfaction can be achieved in majority of the patients. We recommend ORIF as the preferred treatment for displaced acetabular fractures without the abovementioned radiographic features. Level of evidence Therapeutic level IV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seed dispersal is a key process within community dynamics. The spatial and temporal variations of seed dispersal and the interspecific differences are crucial for understanding species coexistence and community dynamics. This might also hold for the mixed evergreen broadleaved and deciduous forests in the mountains of subtropical China, but until now little existing knowledge is available for this question. In 2001, we chose to monitor the seed rain process of our mixed evergreen broad-leaved and deciduous forest communities in Mount Dalaoling National Forest Park, Yichang, Hubei Province, China. The preliminary analyses show obvious variations in seed rain density, species compositions and timing of seed rain among four communities. The average seed rain densities of the four communities are 2.43 ± 5.15, 54.13 ± 182.75, 10.05 ± 19.30 and 24.91 ± 58.86 inds./m2 , respectively; about one tenth the values in other studies in subtropical forests of China. In each community, the seed production is dominated by a limited number of species, and the contributions from the others are generally minor. Fecundity of evergreen broadleaved tree species is weaker than deciduous species. The seed rain of four communities begins earlier than September, and stops before December, peaking from early September to late October. The beginning date, ending date and peak times of seed rain are extensively varied among the species, indicating different types of dispersal strategies. According to the existing data, the timing of seed rain is not determined by the climate conditions in the same period, while the density of seed rain may be affected by the disturbances of weather variations at a finer temporal resolution. The increasing quantities of insecticides that leach into water bodies severely affect the health of the aquatic environment. Juvenile hormone analogue (JHA) insecticides are endocrine disrupters that interfere with hormonal activity in insects by mimicking juvenile hormones (JHs). Because the structure and functions of methyl farnesoate in crustaceans are similar to the insect JHs, exogenous JHA insecticides may cause adverse effects on the growth and reproduction in crustaceans similar to those observed in insects. This study examined the toxic effects of two JHA insecticides, methoprene and fenoxycarb, on the water flea Moina macrocopa. The 24-h and 48-h LC 50 values for fenoxycarb and methoprene were 0.53 and 0.32 mg/L and 0.70 and 0.54 mg/L, respectively. Chronic exposure to the two JHAs caused a series of toxic effects in M. macrocopa , including shortening of life expectancy, repression of body growth, reduction in fecundity, and disturbed the expression of genes involved in the JH signaling pathway, in cuticle development, and in the carbohydrate, amino acid, and ATP metabolic processes. Moreover, JHA exposure impaired the growth and reproduction of the offspring of M. macrocopa exposed to JHAs, even when the neonates were not exposed to the chemicals. In addition, changes in the expression of genes related to histone methylation indicate that epigenetic changes may promote transgenerational impairment in M. macrocopa. These results demonstrate the toxic effects of fenoxycarb and methoprene on non-target aquatic organisms. With prosperity, decay, and another spring, molecular ferroelectrics have passed a hundred years since Valasek first discovered ferroelectricity in the molecular compound Rochelle salt. Recently, the proposal of ferroelectrochemistry has injected new vigor into this century-old research field. It should be highlighted that piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) technique, as a non-destructive imaging and manipulation method for ferroelectric domains at the nanoscale, can significantly speed up the design rate of molecular ferroelectrics as well as enhance the ferroelectric and piezoelectric performances relying on domain engineering. Herein, we provide a brief review of the contribution of the PFM technique toward assisting the design and performance optimization of molecular ferroelectrics. Relying on the relationship between ferroelectric domains and crystallography, together with other physical characteristics such as domain switching and piezoelectricity, we believe that the PFM technique can be effectively applied to assist the design of high-performance molecular ferroelectrics equipped with multifunctionality, and thereby facilitate their practical utilization in optics, electronics, magnetics, thermotics, and mechanics among others. • A novel multi-layered corrugated resonator acoustic metamaterial (MLCRAM) is proposed and fabricated. • It is revealed that the MLCRAM exhibits excellent low-frequency broadband sound absorption performance. • The numerical models verified by experiment are developed to reveal the sound absorption mechanism of the MLCRAM. How to design acoustic metamaterials with excellent low frequency broadband sound absorption and mechanical properties is a concern and bottleneck in the field of structural vibration and noise control. Based on the principle of Helmholtz resonator and lightweight multi-functional sandwich structure, we propose a multi-layered corrugated resonator acoustic metamaterial (MLCRAM) and fabricate a sample using 3D printing technology. Through theoretical and simulated studies of the MLCRAM model, it is presumed that the MLCRAM has excellent sound absorption performance in the frequency range of 500 to 1000 Hz, which is mainly attributed to the parallel combination of resonant cavities. Then the experimental test of the sample is also carried out to verify the reliability of both theoretical and simulated methods. By analyzing the complex frequency plane, the influence of coupling effects between resonant cavities on the sound absorption properties of the MLCRAM. Subsequently, the overall sound absorption mechanism of the MLCRAM is further analyzed in terms of sound velocity, sound pressure amplitude, and power dissipation density. It has been demonstrated that MLCRAM exhibits excellent low-frequency broadband sound absorption performance, providing a reference for the design of novel acoustic metamaterials. Piezoelectric materials produce electricity when strained, making them ideal for different types of sensing applications. The most effective piezoelectric materials are ceramic solid solutions in which the piezoelectric effect is optimized at what are termed morphotropic phase boundaries (MPBs). Ceramics are not ideal for a variety of applications owing to some of their mechanical properties. We synthesized piezoelectric materials from a molecular perovskite (TMFM)x(TMCM)1–xCdCl3 solid solution (TMFM, trimethylfluoromethyl ammonium; TMCM, trimethylchloromethyl ammonium, 0 ≤ x ≤ 1), in which the MPB exists between monoclinic and hexagonal phases. We found a composition for which the piezoelectric coefficient d33 is ~1540 picocoulombs per newton, comparable to high-performance piezoelectric ceramics. Despite extensive interest, however, organosilicon ferroelectric crystals have never been found. Here, by using the chemical design strategy, we successfully obtained a molecular ferroelectric D‐chiro‐inositol‐SiMe3 with polar P43 symmetry, whose spontaneous polarization can be electrically switchable on thin film. The introduction of organosilicon groups endows the thin films with excellent softness, ductility and flexibility (extremely low hardness of 72.8 MPa and small elastic modulus of 5.04 GPa) that are desirable for biomedical and human‐compatible applications. As the first case of organosilicon ferroelectric crystal to date, this work offers a new structural paradigm for molecular ferroelectrics, and highlights their potential for flexible bio‐electronic applications. Abstract: Numerous matrix attachment regions (MARs) have been used to improve transgene expression in genetic engineering, but an efficient and stable expression vector is lacking. In the present study, a vector named pCCF containing chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) reporter gene cassettes was constructed. The cassettes were flanked by a β-interferon MAR at the 5′ upstream of the reporter gene cassettes, and a β-globin MAR at the 3′ site. After transfecting pCCF into Chinese hamster ovary cells, the expression level of the CAT gene with a MAR was effectively increased to about 4.5-fold higher than that transfected with pCAM (containing two β-globin MARs flanking the expression cassette), and to 46.4-fold higher than that transfected with the control plasmid pCAG (without MARs). Quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and the 2−ΔΔCt method were used to analyze the CAT gene relative copy numbers. The expression levels were found to be not directly proportional to the gene copy numbers when MAR elements from different sources were used. With the capability to manipulate the built‐in field in solar cells, ferroelectricity is found to be a promising attribute for harvesting solar energy in solar cell devices by influencing associated device parameters. Researchers have devoted themselves to the exploration of ferroelectric materials that simultaneously possess strong light absorption and good electric transport properties for a long time. Here, it is presented a novel and facile approach of combining state‐of‐art light absorption and electric transport properties with ferroelectricity by the incorporation of room temperature 1D ferroelectric perovskite with 3D organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite (OIHP). The 1D/3D mixed OIHP films are found to exhibit evident ferroelectric properties. It is notable that the poling of the 1D/3D mixed ferroelectric OIHP solar cell can increase the average Voc can be increased from 1.13 to 1.16 V, the average PCE from 20.7% to 21.5%. A maximum power conversion efficiency of 22.7%, along with an enhanced fill factor of over 80% and open‐circuit voltage of 1.19 V, can be achieved in the champion device. The enhancement is by virtue of reduced surface recombination by ferroelectricity‐induced modification of the built‐in field. Since the first perovskite CaTiO3 was discovered in 1839, the development of perovskite has a history of 180 years. The emergence of solar cells (CH3NH3)PbI3 has set off the trend of hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite (HOIP) materials. Since then, various HOIPs have sprung up and been widely used in various material devices. Among them, HOIP ferroelectrics have gained widespread attention. However, antiperovskite, as a twin brother of perovskite, has been neglected although it has similar structure with perovskite. Here, we successfully found that [C3H7FN]3[SnCl6]Cl has a three‐dimensional (3D) antiperovskite structure with the formula M3AB. Importantly, the compound exhibits obvious ferroelectric properties with an Aizu notation of 622F6 at 391 K. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first 3D hybrid organic–inorganic antiperovskite ferroelectric, which will greatly promote the development of antiperovskite families with more superior physical properties. Molecular bistable dielectric switches represent a class of highly desirable intelligent materials due to their sensitive switchable responses, simple and environmentally friendly processing, light weights, and mechanical flexibility. However, most of these switches can only work at a very low temperature, extremely limiting their potential applications. Herein, three layered organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite-type compounds of the general formula A2BX4, [NH3(CH2)2Cl]2[CdCl3Br] (1), [NH3(CH2)2Cl]2[CdCl4] (2) and [NH3(CH2)2Cl]2[CdBr4] (3), which display sensitive dielectric switching reversibility and remarkable switching anti-fatigue, have been successfully designed. Differential scanning calorimetry and dielectric measurements for 1 confirm its reversible phase transition at around 166 K. Through anion modulation, the phase transition temperatures of 2 and 3 can be greatly improved up to 237 K and 254 K, respectively. Structural analysis discloses that the phase transition temperature's shifts may result from the differences among the inorganic frameworks. Moreover, due to the significant order–disorder transitions of ammonium cations, the permittivities of 1, 2 and 3 change abruptly at around the phase transition points, making them excellent stimuli-responsive electrical switches. Narrow band gaps and excellent ferroelectricity are intrinsically paradoxical in ferroelectrics as the leakage current caused by an increase in the number of thermally excited carriers will lead to a deterioration of ferroelectricity. A new molecular ferroelectric, hexane-1,6-diammonium pentaiodobismuth (HDA-BiI5), was now developed through band gap engineering of organic-inorganic hybrid materials. It features an intrinsic band gap of 1.89 eV, and thus represents the first molecular ferroelectric with a band gap of less than 2.0 eV. Simultaneously, low-temperature solution processing was successfully applied to fabricate high-quality ferroelectric thin films based on HDA-BiI5, for which high-precision controllable domain flips were realized. Owing to its narrow band gap and excellent ferroelectricity, HDA-BiI5 can be considered as a milestone in the exploitation of molecular ferroelectrics, with promising applications in high-density data storage and photovoltaic conversion. We investigated the synthesis and structural phase transition of a two-dimensional layered perovskite-type organic–inorganic hybrid compound, (cyclohexylmethylammonium) 2 SnI 4 . By systematic characterizations, we found that this compound undergoes a reversible first-order phase transition from the high-temperature space group Cmca to the low-temperature space group P 2 1 / c at around T c = 319 K. Accompanying the phase transition, dielectric bistability was also detected. The phase transition is ascribed to the order–disorder transition of the cyclohexylmethylammonium cations. It is known, the interesting electronic and optical properties in the two-dimensional Sn(II) and Pb(II) halide perovskite structures are dominated by the inorganic part. The phase transition and related physical properties observed in this work arise from the organic parts. This will enrich the chemistry of the hybrid structures by tailoring the organic moieties, and accordingly, may lead to novel multifunctional materials such as ferroelectric materials. Abstract: The dorsal motor nucleus of vagus (DMV) plays an important role in the regulation of gastrointestinal function. Dopamine (DA) exerts potent neuromodulatory effects on the motoneurons in the DMV via dopamine receptors (DRs). However, the distribution of DRs and their neurochemical phenotypes in the DMV are unclear. In the present study, the distribution of DRs D1- and D2-immunoreactive (IR) neurons and their neurochemical phenotypes in the DMV of rats were investigated using a double-labeling immunofluorescence technique combined with confocal microscopy. The results indicated that a considerable quantity of D1 and D2 was expressed throughout the DMV. A large amount of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT)-IR and a few tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-IR neurons were observed in the DMV. Nearly all of the neurons were also D1-IR and D2-IR. In conclusion, the present study demonstrates the wide distribution of D1 and D2 in the cholinergic and catecholaminergic neurons in the DMV of rats. Abstract: Parkinson''s disease (PD) has been characterized by dopaminergic neuron degeneration in the substantia nigra (SN) accompanied by pathology of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV). PD patients have often experienced gastrointestinal dysfunctions, such as gastroparesis. However, the mechanism underlying these symptoms in PD patients is not clear. In the present study, we investigated alterations of cholinergic and catecholaminergic neurons in the DMV and gastric motor function in rats microinjected with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) bilaterally into the SN (referred to as 6-OHDA rats) and explored possible mechanisms. A strain gauge force transducer was used to record gastric motility in vivo. Expression of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) was evaluated by immunofluorescence and western blot analysis. Acetylcholine (Ach) content was measured using ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC/MS/MS) analysis. After treatment with 6-OHDA for 6weeks, 6-OHDA rats exhibited decreased ChAT and enhanced TH expression in the DMV and decreased Ach content in the gastric muscular layer. Delayed gastric emptying and impaired gastric motility in vivo were observed in 6-OHDA rats. The results of the present study indicated that decreased ChAT and enhanced TH expression in the DMV may be correlated with the development of delayed gastric emptying and impaired gastric motility, which may be partly due to the decreased Ach release from the vagus. Soil contamination and crop risks of heavy metal(loid)s are widely reported after the long-term irrigation of treated wastewater, causing an adverse influence on agricultural sustainability. Here, we collected soils after 50 years of wastewater irrigation to cultivate cabbage (Brassica pekinensis L.), rape (Brassica chinensis L.), carrots (Daucus carota L.), and potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.), using surface and sprinkler irrigation with freshwater and wastewater. In general, we found the statistically insignificant influence of short-term freshwater irrigation on the soil and vegetable metal(loid) concentrations. Most of the vegetables had potential adverse health risks with the relatively lower risks in carrots and potatoes, and most of the risks were contributed by As and Cd. Nevertheless, we observed negligible health risks for all studied metal(loid)s in potatoes under the freshwater irrigations. Besides, compared to wastewater irrigations, freshwater irrigations produced lower Cd health risks in all four vegetable species. Sprinkler irrigation with freshwater was a favorable approach for reducing the uptake of metal(loid)s from soils and the metal(loid) concentrations in aboveground parts. Our study highlights the possibility of reducing vegetable metal(loid) risks in contaminated farmlands via a combined approach of coupling the short-term decrease in their levels in irrigation water with vegetable species selection. Landfill refuse is a mixture of inorganic minerals and organic matter that is capable of undergoing complexation and redox reactions due to its active functional groups. Organic matter often combines with minerals in landfill refuse and it remains unclear whether this combination involves electron transfer. Therefore, the effects of landfill refuse composition on reductive dechlorination and speciation transformation of heavy metals were investigated in this study. Results show that landfill refuse comprises protein- and humic-like substances, aliphatic structures, and a large number of hydroxyl, carboxyl, quinoid and other active functional group. The electron donating capacity (0.09–0.26 μmol/g(C)) of landfill refuse was found to be higher than its electron accepting capacity (0.03–0.23 μmol/g(C)), indicating that electron donating groups (hydroxyl) were the main redox-active moieties, facilitating the reductive dechlorination of pentachlorophenol (PCP) by microorganism. Fe 2 O 3 , FeO and SiO 2 were the main inorganic minerals affecting PCP dechlorination. The speciation distribution of heavy metals in landfill refuse was determined by the BCR sequential extraction method. Results showed that Zn and Ni have high potential migration capacity, poor stability and the highest bioavailability, while Cr, Cu and Pb are relatively stable and have weak migration potential. The oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups, aliphatic structures and aromatic carbon in landfill refuse can promote the transformation of Ni and Cr from an unstable to stable state. Protein-like substances exhibit a strong Cu binding ability, allowing Cu to combine with organic matter more easily than other assessed heavy metals. Both Fe 2 O 3 and FeO affected the stability of Cu. FeO promoted the stabilization of Zn, whereas Fe 2 O 3 and SiO 2 promoted Cu instability. These results could provide some references for the treatment of organic chlorides and the stabilization of heavy metals in landfill refuse in China. Hydrochars derived from municipal sewage sludge was analyzed for its feasibility for value-added recycling. Results of carbon content and elemental composition suggested that the hydrochars might not be comparable with pyrochars regarding to the carbon sequestration, long-term stability and fuel quality. Application as soil amendment would be a better approach for hydrochar utilization. To examine the potential benefits and risks of that, the total and available content of nutrients (i.e. N, P, and K) were measured, and the potentially toxic elements (PTEs, i.e. Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni and Cd) were analyzed for the total content, speciation, and leaching potential. Compared with pyrochars derived from the same feedstock, hydrochars had lower pH and higher cation exchange capacity. The available content of N (1.58–6.87 g/kg), P (0.270–0.901 g/kg), and K (0–0.873 g/kg) in the chars was less than the feedstock sludge (3.33 g/kg N, 3.02 g/kg P, 2.07 g/kg K), but still far higher than that of the agricultural soil (i.e. 0.014–0.488 g/kg N, 0.02 g/kg P, <0.1–0.272 g/kg). Remarkably, hydrochars showed better nutritional balance than pyrochars for its higher available K content. Risk of potentially toxic elements contamination by the sludge was efficiently reduced in either hydrochars or pyrochars, except the high leaching potential of Zn in pyrochars. Overall, in addition to the advantages of the hydrothermal carbonization process as energy saving and value-added liquid by-products, the hydrochars derived from sludge, with sufficient and balanced nutrients and limited PTEs pollution risk, can be a feasible and value-added material as soil amendment. • Soil amendment may be more suitable for hydrochar utilization than as char or fuel. • Hydrochars had lower pH and higher CEC than pyrochars. • Hydrochars had sufficient nutrients and better nutritional balance than pyrochars. • Leaching risk of potentially toxic elements pollution was efficiently reduced. • Partial nutrients of sludge dissolved in the process water may also be re-cycled.
