Background: Hypersensitivity to the new dermal injectable porcine-based collagen with lidocaine featuring a novel cross-linking technology (test filler) for nasolabial fold correction was compared to the commercially available traditional cross-linked dermal injectable porcine-based collagen with lidocaine (control filler). Methods: Recruited participants (n = 279) received a single 0.1 mL intradermal injection of either test filler or control filler in the left forearm as a screening skin allergy test. Injection sites were assessed clinically at 24 h post-implant. Treatment was given to 252 successfully screened participants, and injection sites were monitored for 21 days. Immunological examinations were performed at screening and then at 4 and 24 weeks post-treatment. Observations for adverse events continued until the 52nd week. Results: Intradermal allergy testing results were negative for all the test recipients (0/124) and positive for two control recipients (2/132, 1.5%). Most of the participants exhibited no changes in serum immunoglobulin (IgG, IgM) and complement (C3, C4) levels. No serious adverse events related to the device were recorded. Most adverse events were common complications of dermal filler treatment and were related to the injection site. Most adverse effects were resolved or under control by 52 weeks. Conclusions: Hypersensitivity reactions with the test filler were lower than those with the control filler, validating the safe use of test filler for nasolabial fold correction without the need for pretreatment skin testing. • Type III necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is encountered predominantly in Asian countries. • Type III NF has a mortality risk two-fold higher than type I or type II NF. • Type III NF caused by extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) exhibits the highest mortality risk. • Type III NF caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae has the second highest mortality risk. The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic value of reclassified new type III monomicrobial gram-negative necrotizing fasciitis (NF) and the microbial factors associated with an increased risk of mortality. This study included 235 NF cases treated at National Taiwan University Hospital. We compared the mortality risk of NF caused by different causal microorganisms and examined the bacterial virulence genes profile and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern associated with an increase in mortality risk. Type III NF (n = 68) had a mortality risk two-fold higher than type I (polymicrobial, n = 64) or type II (monomicrobial gram-positive, n = 79) NF (42.6% vs 23.4% or 19.0%, P = 0.019 and 0.002, respectively). Mortality differed by causal microorganism (Escherichia coli [61.5%], Klebsiella pneumoniae [40.0%], Aeromonas hydrophila [37.5%], Vibrio vulnificus [25.0%], polymicrobial [23.4%], group A streptococci [16.7%], and Staphylococcus aureus [16.2%], in decreasing rank, P <0.001). Type III NF caused by E. coli , identified as extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) via virulence gene analyses, was associated with a particularly high mortality risk (adjusted odds ratio: 6.51, P = 0.003) after adjusting for age and comorbidities. Some (38.5%/7.7%) of the E. coli strains were non-susceptible to third/fourth-generation cephalosporins but remained susceptible to carbapenems. Type III NF, especially cases caused by E. coli or K. pneumoniae , are associated with a comparatively higher mortality risk than type I or type II NF. Background: Anti-human CD154 monoclonal antibody (mAb)-based regimens have been demonstrated to prevent T cell-dependent elicited antibody response in baboon recipients of pig hematopoietic progenitor cells, organs and islets. Monitoring of anti-CD154 mAb in serum is important to ensure maintenance of adequate levels and for adjusting dosage of the anti-CD154 mAb. We describe a method for measuring the level in primate sera. Methods: The anti-CD154 mAb level in primate serum was measured with a competitive inhibition enzyme linked immunosorbent assay in which the extent of inhibition of binding by anti-CD154 mAb conjugated to horseradish peroxidase (anti-CD154-HRP) to soluble CD154 was used to determine the serum level. Briefly, a 96-well maxisorb plate coated with soluble human CD154, and blocked with bovine serum albumin, was loaded with graded doses of anti-CD154 mAb or primate sera containing anti-CD154 mAb. Both were mixed with a known dosage of anti-CD154-HRP before loading. Bound anti-CD154-HRP was detected by color developed using 3,3′,5,5′ tetramethyl-benzidine as substrate. Absorbance was measured in a SynergyTM HT Multi-Detection Microplate Reader at a wavelength of 450 nm. Data analysis was carried out using BioTek's KC4TM Data Analysis Software. The standard curve was generated from the wells loaded with the mixture of anti-CD154 mAb and anti-CD154-HRP. Pressure injuries are a common problem resulting in poor prognosis, long-term hospitalization, and increased medical costs in an aging society. This study developed a method to do automatic segmentation and area measurement of pressure injuries using deep learning models and a light detection and ranging (LiDAR) camera. We selected the finest photos of patients with pressure injuries, 528 in total, at National Taiwan University Hospital from 2016 to 2020. The margins of the pressure injuries were labeled by three board-certified plastic surgeons. The labeled photos were trained by Mask R-CNN and U-Net for segmentation. After the segmentation model was constructed, we made an automatic wound area measurement via a LiDAR camera. We conducted a prospective clinical study to test the accuracy of this system. For automatic wound segmentation, the performance of the U-Net (Dice coefficient (DC): 0.8448) was better than Mask R-CNN (DC: 0.5006) in the external validation. In the prospective clinical study, we incorporated the U-Net in our automatic wound area measurement system and got 26.2% mean relative error compared with the traditional manual method. Background: Mixed chimerism is associated with donor-specific tolerance. Spleen or splenocyte allotransplantation (Tx) is recognized as potentially tolerogenic. There is no definitive report comparing chimerism levels following spleen and splenocyte Tx in a large animal model. We have compared chimerism after spleen, splenocyte, or kidney Tx in pigs. Methods: Outbred (n = 5) and MHC-defined miniature (n = 1 ) pigs underwent orthotopic spleen Tx. Outbred pigs received splenocytes through a systemic vein (n = 1 ) or the portal vein (n = 3). Kidney Tx (n = 2) or concomitant Tx of spleen + kidney (n = 2) was carried out. All except one recipient pigs were irradiated (700 cGy thymic and 1 0 0 - 1 2 5 cGy whole body) on day -- 2. Cyclosporine or tacrolimus was administered for 4 2 days. All donors were males and all recipients were females; chimerism in the blood was determined by Quantification- PCR for the donor Y chromosome. Mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) was performed before and after Tx. Results: One week after spleen Tx in outbred and MHC-defined pigs, chimerism ranged between 0.8 and 22.5%, and 5.4-20.1%, respectively, and remained between 17.7 and 67.4%, and 2.2-7.4%, respectively, until day 28. One week after splenocyte Tx, chimerism ranged between 0.1 and 8.5%, and decreased to 0 . 1 - 0 . 8% at 3 - 4 weeks. There was no detectable chimerism 14 days after kidney Tx. The response on MLR of all recipient pigs to donor cells was decreased after Tx, except in one case of splenocyte Tx, indicating that this pig might have become sensitized. After discontinuation of immunosuppression, most isolated spleen or kidney grafts were not rejected, but the kidney was rejected after concomitant spleen + kidney Tx. Conclusions: There was a significantly higher level of blood chimerism following spleen Tx compared to splenocyte or kidney Tx. Klebsiella pneumoniae has become a common pathogen of monomicrobial necrotizing fasciitis in Taiwan. Physicians treating patients with monomicrobial K. pneumoniae necrotizing fasciitis should be aware of the risk of concomitant distant abscesses, particularly in cases caused by genotype K1.Background. Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rapidly progressive, life-threatening soft-tissue infection that is traditionally caused by group A Streptococcus (GAS) or mixed aerobic/anaerobic bacteria. Monomicrobial Klebsiella pneumoniae NF (KP-NF) has been reported since 1996 but has not yet been systematically studied.Methods. We retrospectively studied consecutive NF cases treated at a university hospital in Taiwan during 1997–2010 and investigated the clinical characteristics and outcomes associated with monomicrobial KP-NF, using monomicrobial GAS-NF as a reference. We also analyzed the virulence gene profiles of the isolated K. pneumoniae strains.Results. Of 134 NF cases, 88 were monomicrobial, of which the most common pathogens were GAS (n = 16) and K. pneumoniae (n = 15). Monomicrobial KP-NF entailed a moderate risk of limb loss (20% vs 25%; P = 1.000) and high mortality (47% vs 19%; P = .135), and it was more likely to involve bacteremia (80% vs 31%; P = .011), concomitant distant abscesses (27% vs 0%; P = .043), and underlying immunocompromising conditions (100% vs 63%; P = .018), compared with GAS-NF. The isolated K. pneumoniae strains (n = 10) were of capsular polysaccharides genotype K1 (n = 4), K54/K20/K5 (n = 4), K2 (n = 1), and K16 (n = 1). All strains carried rmpA, iucABCDiutA, and iroA. Genotype K1 strains had a significantly higher risk of concomitant distant abscesses, compared with non-K1 strains (75% vs 0%; P = .033).Conclusions. K. pneumoniae has become a common pathogen of monomicrobial NF in Taiwan. Purpose: To study outcomes among survivors of the mass-casualty powder explosion on 27 June 2015, at Formosa Fun Coast Waterpark, New Taipei City, Taiwan.Methods: Using retrospective data on Taiwanese survivors, we analyzed prehospital management, burns assessment and prognosis, functional recovery, and medical costs, followed-up through 30 June 2017. We related outcomes to burn extent, categorized according to the percentages of total body surface area with second/third-degree burns (%TBSA) or autologous split-thickness skin grafts (%STSG), and an investigational scale: f{SASG} = (%TBSA + %STSG)/2, stratified by %STSG. Analyses included casualty dispersal, comparisons between %TBSA, %STSG and f{SASG}, and their relationships with length of hospitalization, times to rehabilitation and social/school re-entry, physical/mental disability, and medical costs. We also investigated how burn scars restricting joint mobility affected rehabilitation duration.Results: 445 hospitalized casualties (excluding 16 foreigners, 23 with 0% TBSA and 15 fatalities) aged 12-38 years, had mean TBSA of 41.1%. Hospitalization and functional recovery durations correlated with %TBSA, %STSG and f{SASG} - mean length of stay per %TBSA was 1.5 days; more numerous burn scar contractures prolonged rehabilitation. Females had worse burns than males, longer hospitalization and rehabilitation, and later school/social re-entry; at follow-up, 62.3% versus 37.7% had disabilities and 57.7% versus 42.3% suffered mental trauma (all p ≤ 0.001). Disabilities affecting 225/227 people were skin-related; 34 were severely disabled but 193 had mild/moderate impairments. The prevalence of stress-related and mood disorders increased with burn extent. Treatment costs (mean USD-equivalents ∼$48,977/patient, ∼$1192/%TBSA) increased with burn severity; however, the highest %TBSA, %STSG and f{SASG} categories accounted for <10% of total costs, whereas TBSA 41-80% accounted for 73.2%.Conclusions: Besides %TBSA, skin-graft requirements and burn scar contractures are complementary determinants of medium/long-term outcomes. Objective: To investigate the outcomes of a local healthcare system in managing a burn mass casualty incident (BMCI).Methods: Thirty-three victims admitted to the National Taiwan University Hospital within 96h of the explosion were included in the study. Data were recorded on: patient demographics, Baux score, laboratory data, management response, treatment strategies, and outcomes. Case notes from June 27, 2015 to November 2015 were reviewed with a focus on fluid resuscitation, ventilation support, nutrition, infection control, sepsis treatment, and wound closure plan.Results: Female predominance (mean age: 21.7 years) and lower extremity circumferential flame burns were the characteristics of the burn injury. The mean Baux score was 70±18. The mean burn area was 42% of the total body surface area (TBSA). A total of 79% patients arrived at the hospital within 24h of sustaining injuries. Intensive care unit (ICU) admission criteria were modified to accommodate patients with 40% TBSA of burns, facilities were expanded from 4 ICU beds to 18 beds, and new staff was recruited. A total of 36% patients (n=12/33, 62±13 TBSA of burns) required fluid resuscitation. The mean volume of Lactate Ringer administered in the first 24h of burns was 3.34±2.18ml/kg/%TBSA, while the mean volume of fresh frozen plasma administered was 0.60±0.63ml/kg/h. Forty-two percent patients were intubated on the day of admission, and 71% of the intubated patients had inhalation injuries that were confirmed by diagnostic bronchoscopy. The mean intubation period was 17±9 days. The incidence of pulmonary edema was 58% (n=7/12), possibly due to sub-optimal monitoring. Of these, 57% (n=4/7) patients progressed to adult respiratory distress syndrome, but were successfully treated with early strict fluid restriction, systemic antibiotics, ventilation support, and bronchial lavage. A total of 94% patients received grafting. The mean grafted area was 4432.3±3891cm2. Tube feeding was provided to patients with burns >40% TBSA. All patients tolerated gastric tube feeding without conversion to duodenal switch. On admission, all patients received prophylactic antibiotics. Septic shock was noted in 12 patients, but no mortality occurred. The mean hospital stay was 1.5 days per percent burn.Conclusions: This article highlights the value of precise triage, traffic control, and effective resource allocation in treating a BMCI. Effective supporting systems for facility expansion, staff recruitment, medical supplies and clear-cut treatment strategies for severely burned patients are contributory factors leading to zero mortalities in our series, in addition to young age and minimal inhalation injuries. This study was conducted to confirm that 1-site and 4-site ppU6-GGTA1-gRNA CRISPR vectors together with the pCX-Flag2-NLS1-Cas9-NLS2plasmid can both generate KO pigs by direct pronuclear microinjection. In total, 41 and 53 fertilized eggs were microinjected on 1-site and 4-site strategies, respectively. The 1-site construction generated a litter of 8 piglets, and 2 were mono-allelic mutant (mMt). The injection of 4-site constructions resulted in one biallelic mutant (bMt) and one mMt piglet in a litter of 7. Those 3 mMt pigs had a 4 bp deletion, 5 bp insertion, or 7 bp insertion at site I, and the bMt pig had 5 types of mutations at cleavage sites I and III. The expression of alpha-Gal on the bMt peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) was reduced, and survival rate of bMt PBMCs was maintained as indicated by results of cultivation with sera of humans or Formosan Macaques. We concluded that mutant pigs could be generated by direct pronuclear microinjection of ppU6-GGTA1-gRNA CRISPR vectors with the pCX-Flag2-NLS1-Cas9-NLS2plasmid and that the 4-site strategy has a better mutant efficiency. The heel pad plays an important role in gait, and its biomechanical behavior and functionality are determined by its specialized architecture and mechanical properties. The purpose of this study was to apply supersonic shear wave elastography, an ultrasound-based noninvasive modality that can quantitatively estimate the shear stiffness of the tissue, to investigate the spatial-dependent mechanical properties of the heel pad. Measurements were conducted in 40 heel pads of 20 normal participants aged between 20 and 30 years by shear wave elastography. The continuous change in local shear stiffness of the heel pad along the depth direction of the heel pad was measured. The result showed that the mechanical properties of the heel pad were highly heterogeneous but followed a simple and specific pattern that local heel pad shear stiffness was highest beneath the plantar skin and decreased continuously with increasing depth. Background: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rapidly progressive and life-threatening infection. This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and mortality- associated factors in diabetic patients.Methods: Detailed clinical information of 165 NF cases was retrospectively collected and analyzed in National Taiwan University Hospital between January 1997 and February 2013. We documented and compared the clinical features according to the presence of underlying diabetes mellitus, and we identified risk factors associated with mortality.Results: There were 84 patients (51 %) with diabetes. The overall case fatality rate was 29.7 %, and we found no significant difference between the patients with or without diabetes. Compared with the nondiabetic patients, diabetic patients were older and exhibited higher serum levels of glucose and potassium on admission. Polymicrobial infection and monomicrobial NF caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae were also more frequently associated with diabetic patients. Moreover, diabetic NF patients exhibit a significantly higher chance of limb loss during hospitalization. In the combined diabetic and nondiabetic cohort, a high serum level of potassium (odds ratio, 2.2; 95 % confidence interval, 1.2 to 4.02; P = 0.011) on admission was independently associated with mortality, whereas positive blood culture on admission was associated with mortality in the diabetic cohort (odds ratio, 7.36; 95 % confidence interval, 1.66 to 32.54; P = 0.009).Conclusions: Diabetic patients are more susceptible to NF caused by polymicrobial infection or K. pneumoniae, and they are more likely to receive limb amputation for infection control. To test whether computerized quantification of ultrasonic heterogeneity can be of help in the diagnosis of thyroid malignancy, we evaluated ultrasonic heterogeneity with an objective and quantitative computerized method in a prospective setting. A total of 400 nodules including 271 benign thyroid nodules and 129 malignant thyroid nodules were evaluated. Patient clinical data were collected, and the grading of heterogeneity on conventional gray-scale ultrasound images was retrospectively reviewed by a thyroid specialist. Quantification of ultrasonic heterogeneity (heterogeneity index, HI) was performed by a proprietary program implemented with methods proposed in this article. HI values differed significantly between benign and malignant nodules, diagnosed by a combination of fine-needle aspiration and surgical pathology results ( p < 0.001, area under the curve = 0.714). The ultrasonic heterogeneity of these samples, as assessed by an experienced clinician, could not significantly differentiate between benign and malignant thyroid nodules. However, nodules with marked ultrasonic heterogeneity had higher HI values than nodules with homogeneous nodules. These results indicate that the new computer-aided diagnosis method for evaluation of the ultrasonic heterogeneity of thyroid nodules is an objective and quantitative method that is correlated with conventional ultrasonic heterogeneity assessment, but can better aid in the diagnosis of thyroid malignancy. Abstract: To clarify and determine whether power Doppler sonograms are useful for the detection of malignant thyroid nodules, a computerized quantification method was used to evaluate the vascular density of a thyroid nodule in a prospective setting. Sonographic power Doppler images were collected in consecutive frames (45 frames of images), and a proprietary program (AmCAD-UV) was implemented using methods proposed in this article automatically calculated a quantified power Doppler vascular index (PDVI). The minimum PDVI value (PDVImin) was suggested as a measure of the vascular density of the nodule. The vascular densities of the peripheral and central areas of the nodule, referred to as central PDVImin and Ring PDVImin, respectively, were also evaluated. For 238 tumors (79 malignant and 159 benign) from 208 patients, all of the proposed indices of benign lesions were significantly higher than those of the malignant lesions. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) reaches 71% with the PDVImin. When the vascular patterns were further classified into intra-nodular and peripheral vascularity types, no vascularity type was observed significantly more frequently in malignant nodules than in benign nodules. These proposed computerized vascular indices provide a quantification method to objectively evaluate thyroid nodules and have potential as predictors of thyroid malignancy. The conventional vascular characterizations of malign nodules, that is, more vessels are observed in malignant nodules than in benign nodules, are shown to be unreliable in our study. Abstract: To improve the ultrasonographic detection rates of thyroid cancers with microcalcifications, we propose to enhance the sensitivity of sonographic calcifications detection and to avoid interobserver variation by a computerized quantification method in a prospective setting. A total of 227 participants with 258 nodules were evaluated. Among them, two nodules were excluded for suspicious aspiration cytology results without pathologic proof. Among the remaining 256 nodules, the diagnosis of 181 nodules was verified by surgical pathology and the diagnosis of 75 was based on fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy results. There were 173 benign thyroid nodules and 83 malignant thyroid nodules, which included 74 papillary carcinomas. Patient clinical data were collected and the presence of calcifications on conventional gray-scale ultrasound images was retrospectively reviewed by a thyroid specialist. Quantification of cystic components and calcifications was automatically performed by a proprietary program (AmCAD-UT) implemented with methods proposed in this article. The calcification index (CI) was calculated after the cystic component was excluded. The CI between benign and malignant nodules diagnosed by combined FNA biopsy and surgical pathology results (total number, 256) showed a significant difference (p < 0.0001, AUC = 0.746). Furthermore, we excluded patients without surgical pathology results for further validation and the CI between benign and malignant nodules confirmed by pathology results (total number, 181) showed a significant difference (p < 0.0001, AUC = 0.763). To learn whether our computer program increased our diagnostic capabilities, we analyzed human investigators and their abilities to detect and evaluate. In this study, calcifications were noted in 48.19% (40 of 83) of malignant thyroid nodules and in 10.98% (19 of 173) of benign nodules. This new computer-aided diagnosis method to evaluate the sonographic calcifications of thyroid nodules is a more sensitive and more objective method. Background: Intestinal transplantation (ITx) is a life-saving procedure for patients with intestinal failure. The poorer outcome of ITx than of other organ transplantation, however, warrants more clinical and basic research on ITx. Herein, we developed a modified Paul-Mikulicz ileostomy procedure in a swine model of ITx, and investigated its feasibility for obtaining intestinal samples of both the graft and the recipient. Materials and Methods: We performed ITx in 10 pairs of piglets, each weighing 15–20kg. Procurement included an isolated segment of the small bowel, constituting a model of a living, related donor surgery. The recipient procedures included end-to-end anastomosis of vascular stumps, a proximal jejuno–jejunal anastomosis, and a distal modified Paul-Mikulicz ileostomy. The procedure differed from the classic Paul-Mikulicz ileostomy in that a common channel was created in a side-to-side fashion. Results: Vascular thrombosis occurred in three pigs, resulting in immediate loss of the graft. All other pigs underwent ITx successfully and survived for at least 1 wk (7–180 d). No pig experienced anastomotic leaks, ileus, or stoma-related complications. Moreover, this technique enabled us to obtain tissue samples of both the graft and the native ileum without disturbing the natural bowel conduit. Conclusions: The modified Paul-Mikulicz ileostomy was feasible in a swine model of ITx. It facilitated the collection of intestinal samples of both the graft and the recipient. Purpose: Necrotizing fasciitis involving the upper extremities is an uncommon, but potentially life-threatening infection. Surgical records were reviewed to identify its mortality risk factors. Methods: A 10-year retrospective review was conducted of all patients with upper limb necrotizing fasciitis treated in a tertiary care hospital in northern Taiwan. The demographic data, physical and laboratory findings and salient information with respect to the treatment and clinical outcome were collected and analyzed. Results: Fourteen patients were identified. The mean age of the all-male cohort was 60.2 years (range, 44-83 years). Five of the patients died, yielding a mortality rate of 35.7%. At the time of presentation, all 14 patients had pain and swelling, but fever occurred in only 7 patients. Associated chronic debilitating diseases, of which diabetes mellitus was the most common, were present in 9 individuals. Patients underwent an average of two surgical debridements. The initial presentation in a state of altered consciousness or respiratory distress was found to be a statistically significant factors for eventual mortality ( P < 0.05). Conclusion: The results showed that necrotizing fasciitis of the upper extremity is associated with a high mortality rate. Physicians use sonographic characteristics as a reference for the possible diagnosis of thyroid cancers. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether physicians were more effective in their tentative diagnosis based on the information provided by a computer-aided detection (CAD) system. A computer compared software-defined and physician-adjusted tumor loci. A multicenter, multireader, and multicase (MRMC) study was designed to compare clinician performance without and with the use of CAD. Interobserver variability was also analyzed. Excellent, satisfactory, and poor segmentations were observed in 25.3%, 58.9%, and 15.8% of nodules, respectively. There were 200 patients with 265 nodules in the study set. Nineteen physicians scored the malignancy potential of the nodules. The average area under the curve (AUC) of all readers was 0.728 without CAD and significantly increased to 0.792 with CAD. The average standard deviation of the malignant potential score significantly decreased from 18.97 to 16.29. The mean malignant potential score significantly decreased from 35.01 to 31.24 for benign cases. With the CAD system, an additional 7.6% of malignant nodules would be suggested for further evaluation, and biopsy would not be recommended for an additional 10.8% of benign nodules. The results demonstrated that applying a CAD system would improve clinicians' interpretations and lessen the variability in diagnosis. Background: Numerous patients suffer from chronic wounds and wound infections nowadays. Until now, the care for wounds after surgery still remain a tedious and challenging work for the medical personnel and patients. As a result, with the help of the hand-held mobile devices, there is high demand for the development of a series of algorithms and related methods for wound infection early detection and wound self monitoring.Methods: This research proposed an automated way to perform (1) wound image segmentation and (2) wound infection assessment after surgical operations. The first part describes an edge-based self-adaptive threshold detection image segmentation method to exclude nonwounded areas from the original images. The second part describes a wound infection assessment method based on machine learning approach. In this method, the extraction of feature points from the suture area and an optimal clustering method based on unimodal Rosin threshold algorithm that divides feature points into clusters are introduced. These clusters are then merged into several regions of interest (ROIs), each of which is regarded as a suture site. Notably, a support vector machine (SVM) can automatically interpret infections on these detected suture site.Results: For (1) wound image segmentation, boundary-based evaluation were applied on 100 images with gold standard set up by three physicians. Overall, it achieves 76.44% true positive rate and 89.04% accuracy value. For (2) wound infection assessment, the results from a retrospective study using confirmed wound pictures from three physicians for the following four symptoms are presented: (1) Swelling, (2) Granulation, (3) Infection, and (4) Tissue Necrosis. Through cross-validation of 134 wound images, for anomaly detection, our classifiers achieved 87.31% accuracy value; for symptom assessment, our classifiers achieved 83.58% accuracy value.Conclusions: This augmentation mechanism has been demonstrated reliable enough to reduce the need for face-to-face diagnoses.
