There is growing interest in the use of short-pulse lasers for coherent antiStokes Raman scattering (CARS) to minimize non-resonant background (NRB) contributions in a variety of applications. Using time-coincident picosecond (ps) pump and Stokes beams and a time-delayed ps probe beam, we show that a three orders of magnitude reduction in NRB interference can be achieved in rich hydrocarbon–air flames while preserving 60% to 80% of the CARS signal. This represents a significant improvement in signal-to-interference ratio compared with previous measurements in room temperature air and is attributable to reduced rates of collisional dephasing and relaxation at flame temperatures. Measurements within the flame zone of a laminar flat-flame burner are used to investigate the characteristics of time-coincident and probedelayed broadband ps N2-CARS spectra for C2H4–air equivalence ratios of 0.5 to 1.2. Up to three ro-vibrational bands of N2 are excited with each laser shot using 135 ps pump and 106 ps Stokes beams, and the CARS signal is generated using a 135 ps probe beam delayed by 165 ps. The enhanced signal-to-interference ratio achieved in the current work is one to two orders of magnitude higher than that previously achieved using polarization-selection techniques without sensitivity to the effects of birefringence caused by density gradients or test cell windows. Moreover, the use of a 135 ps laser source in this study enables frequency domain "broadband" CARS with sufficient resolution to extract ro-vibrational spectral features under various flame conditions. The effect of probe delay and NRB suppression on characteristics of these broadband CARS spectra are investigated, and evidence of preferential collisional dephasing and relaxation of different ro-vibrational transitions is not detected. Femtosecond, two-photon-absorption laser-induced fluorescence (fs-TALIF) is employed to measure space- and time-resolved distributions of atomic hydrogen and oxygen in moderate-pressure, non-equilibrium, nanosecond-duration pulsed-discharge plasmas. Temporally and spatially resolved hydrogen and oxygen TALIF images are obtained over a range of low-temperature plasmas in mixtures of helium and argon at 100 Torr total pressure. The high-peak-intensity, low-average-energy fs pulses combined with the increased spectral bandwidth compared to traditional ns-duration laser pulses provide a large number of photon pairs that are responsible for the two-photon excitation, which results in an enhanced TALIF signal. Krypton and xenon TALIF are used for quantitative calibration of the hydrogen and oxygen concentrations, respectively, with similar excitation schemes being employed. This enables 2D collection of atomic-hydrogen and -oxygen TALIF signals with absolute number densities ranging from 2  ×  1012 cm−3 to 6  ×  1015 cm−3 and 1  ×  1013 cm−3 to 3  ×  1016 cm−3, respectively. These 2D images are the first application of TALIF imaging in moderate-pressure plasma discharges. 1D self-consistent modeling predictions show agreement with experimental results within the estimated experimental error of 25%. Amplification of laser-induced plasma in air is demonstrated utilizing resonant laser ionization and avalanche ionization. Molecular oxygen in air is ionized by a low-energy laser pulse employing (2 + 1) resonance-enhanced multi-photon ionization (REMPI) to generate seed electrons. Subsequent avalanche ionization of molecular oxygen and nitrogen significantly amplifies the laser-induced plasma. In this plasma-amplification effect, three-body attachments to molecular oxygen dominate the electron-generation and -loss processes, while either nitrogen or argon acts as the third body with low electron affinity. Contour maps of the electron density within the plasma obtained in O2/ N2 and O2/Ar gas mixtures are provided to show relative degrees of plasma amplification with respect to gas pressure and to verify that the seed electrons generated by O2 2 + 1 REMPI are selectively amplified by avalanche ionization of molecular nitrogen in a relatively low-pressure condition (≤100 Torr). Reacting flows and plasmas are prevalent in a wide array of systems involving defense, commercial, space, energy, medical, and consumer products. Understanding the complex physical and chemical processes involving reacting flows and plasmas requires measurements of key parameters, such as temperature, pressure, electric field, velocity, and number densities of chemical species. Time-resolved measurements of key chemical species and temperature are required to determine kinetics related to the chemical reactions and transient phenomena. Laser-based, noninvasive linear and nonlinear spectroscopic approaches have proved to be very valuable in providing key insights into the physico-chemical processes governing reacting flows and plasmas as well as validating numerical models. The advent of kilohertz rate amplified femtosecond lasers has expanded the multidimensional imaging of key atomic species such as H, O, and N in a significant way, providing unprecedented insight into preferential diffusion and production of these species under chemical reactions or electric-field driven processes. These lasers not only provide 2D imaging of chemical species but have the ability to perform measurements free of various interferences. Moreover, these lasers allow 1D and 2D temperature-field measurements, which were quite unimaginable only a few years ago. The rapid growth of the ultrafast-laser-based spectroscopic measurements has been fueled by the need to achieve the following when measurements are performed in reacting flows and plasmas. They are: (1) interference-free measurements (collision broadening, photolytic dissociation, Stark broadening, etc), (2) time-resolved single-shot measurements at a rate of 1–10 kHz, (3) spatially-resolved measurements, (4) higher dimensionality (line, planar, or volumetric), and (5) simultaneous detection of multiple species. The overarching goal of this article is to review the current state-of-the-art ultrafast-laser-based spectroscopic techniques and their remarkable development in the past two decades in meeting one or all of the above five goals for the spectroscopic measurement of temperature, number density of the atomic and molecular species, and electric field. Absolute number densities of atomic species produced by nanosecond (ns)-duration, repetitively pulsed electric discharges are measured by two-photon-absorption laser-induced fluorescence (TALIF). Unique to this work is the development of femtosecond-laser-based TALIF (fs-TALIF) that offers a number of advantages over more conventional nanosecond (ns)-pulse-duration laser techniques, such as higher-fidelity quenching rate measurements over a wide pressure range, significantly reduced photolytic interference (including photo-dissociation and photo-ionization), ability to collect two-dimensional images of atomic-species number densities with high spatial resolution aided by higher signal level, and efficient and accurate measurements of atomic-species number densities due to the higher repetition rates of the laser. For full quantification of these advantages, atomic-oxygen TALIF signals are collected from an atmospheric-pressure plasma jet employing both ns- and fs-duration laser-excitation pulses and the results are compared and contrasted. Femtosecond, two-photon-absorption laser-induced-fluorescence (fs-TALIF) spectroscopy is employed to measure space- and time-resolved atomic-oxygen distributions in a nanosecond, repetitively pulsed, externally grounded, atmospheric-pressure plasma jet flowing helium with a variable oxygen admixture. The high-peak-intensity, low-average-energy femtosecond pulses result in increased TALIF signal with reduced photolytic inferences. This allows 2D imaging of absolute atomic-oxygen number densities ranging from 5.8   ×   1015 to 2.0   ×   1012cm−3 using a cooled CCD with an external intensifier. Xenon is used for signal and imaging-system calibrations to quantify the atomic-oxygen fluorescence signal. Initial results highlight a transition in discharge morphology from annular to filamentary, corresponding with a change in plasma chemistry from ozone to atomic oxygen production, as the concentration of oxygen in the feed gas is changed at a fixed voltage-pulse-repetition rate. In this configuration, significant concentrations of reactive oxygen species may be remotely generated by sustaining an active discharge beyond the confines of the dielectric capillary, which may benefit applications that require large concentrations of reactive oxygen species such as material processing or biomedical devices.
