Temperature is a key driver in determining species distribution and abundance across climatic and geographical gradients. This occurs through direct physiological effects of temperature on performance, but may also result from temperature effects on species interactions.In the current study we experimentally test for temperature‐dependent competition between juvenile anadromous Atlantic salmon and brown trout and evaluate the role of temperature in shaping the relative abundance of these species across 88 Norwegian rivers.When the two species were reared in allopatry their somatic growth rates were similar across a range of temperatures (4–16°C).When reared in sympatry, the growth of salmon was greatly reduced at the coldest temperature relative to when reared in allopatry, whereas this was not the case for trout. The effect of interspecific competition on growth was more similar for the two species at warmer temperatures. Thus, interspecific competition effects were strongly asymmetric only at the lowest temperature, with trout outcompeting salmon.The results from the experiment were reflected in qualitative patterns of relative abundance of salmon and trout in natural populations, which shifted from being trout dominated in rivers with low summer temperatures to being salmon dominated in warmer rivers.These results provide an empirical example of how temperature effects on the relative abundance of species can only be understood in light of information about temperature‐dependent species interactions. The abundance of aquatic vegetation is increasing in rivers and lakes worldwide. The aim of this study was to find how the macrophyte Juncus bulbosus Linnaeus affects salmonids and benthic macroinvertebrates in Norwegian rivers. The proliferation of J. bulbosus in the study rivers commenced after the development of hydropower in the 1960s and 1970s. J. bulbosus is now considered a nuisance for humans in many areas of the rivers. We found a higher density of juvenile fish and higher density, weight and species richness of invertebrates in areas with J. bulbosus than in areas with gravel, suggesting that the vegetation is not limiting fish and invertebrates. This may be because macrophytes increase the surface area and provide shelter, food and a variety of ecological niches. Adult salmonid fish can be negatively affected when their spawning grounds are covered by vegetation. However, overgrowth is not common and may take years since fish clear the river bed of macrophytes during redd digging, indicating competition between macrophytes and fish for riverbed habitat. Our results suggest that one should not assume that outgrowths of macrophytes have negative impacts on the ecosystem. The accuracy of drift diving surveys of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. and sea trout, Salmo trutta L., was evaluated by comparing the abundance and size distribution with catches in a fish trap over 6 years in the River Etneelva, western Norway. The population count from drift diving accounted for on average 96.3% of the salmon in the trap after accounting for the catches during fishing. Size structure registered during drift diving corresponded with trap catches of salmon, but the number of small salmon (<3 kg) appeared to be somewhat underestimated, while large salmon (>7 kg) were overestimated in drift diving. For sea trout, the match between drift diving counts and trap registrations was poorer (average 76.3%), but may have been affected by the surveys being performed too late with regards to sea trout spawning time. Captive‐reared fish often have poor survival in the wild and may fail to boost threatened populations. Enrichment during the nursery period can in some circumstances generate a broader behavioural repertoire than conventional hatchery production. Yet, we do not know if enrichment promotes survival after release into the wild. We conducted a field experiment during three field seasons using age 0+ year Atlantic salmon Salmo salar to investigate if enrichment during rearing, in the form of structural complexity (shelters), reduced immediate (within 2 days after release) predation mortality by piscine predators (brown trout Salmo trutta) and if such rearing environments improved long‐term (2–3 months after release) post‐release survival. In addition, we investigated if predation mortality of released fry was size‐selective. S. salar fry were reared in a structurally enriched environment or in a conventional rearing environment and given otolith marks using alizarin during the egg stage to distinguish between enriched and conventionally‐reared fry. The outcome from the field experiments showed that structural enrichment did not consistently reduce immediate predation mortality and it did not improve, or had a negative effect on, the recapture rate of fry from the river 2–3 months after release. The data also showed that enriched rearing tended to reduce growth. Additionally, we found that S. trutta predators fed on small individuals of the released fry. Overall, the data suggest that structural enrichment alone is not sufficient to improve long‐term survival of hatchery‐reared fish after release and that other factors might affect post‐release survival. The rivers that drain into the Hardangerfjord were historically known to have numerous populations of both sea trout (Salmo trutta) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). After a decline in catches during the last decades many of the rivers have been closed for fishing. In this study we use snorkelling observations from rivers and catch statistics from 2004 to 2011 to describe the current situation and analyse the patterns of density of wild salmon, sea trout and escaped farmed salmon in the Hardangerfjord rivers. We hypothesize that some of the variance in density of salmon and sea trout can be explained by the location of the river in the fjord, with fish from rivers with a longer fjord exposure having a lower density. A median number of 3.5 salmon×ha−1and 14.9 sea trout×ha−1were observed in the rivers. Farmed salmon were observed in all rivers and constituted on average 23.3% of the total number of observed salmon. For salmon, there was an inverse log-linear relationship between density in the river and migration distance to coast, with a higher density in rivers with a shorter migration distance. For sea trout there was no evident relationship with location within the fjord. We suggest that the spatial patterns observed for salmon and sea trout can be related to the species-specific differences in habitat use within the fjord system. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Classic offspring-size theory predicts that a single level of investment per offspring maximizes parental reproductive success in a given environment. Yet, substantial variation in offspring size is often observed among females within populations. Variation at this scale may occur because spatio-temporal variation in stabilizing selection prevents erosion of genetic variation. We tested whether patterns of size-specific offspring survival of Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar) varies across location and season within a short stretch of a natural stream by manipulating the emergence timing of juveniles from 12 families with different mean egg sizes and assessing their performance at two locations. The relationship between egg size and juvenile survival varied temporally and spatially; large eggs were advantageous for early emergers in one location, whereas egg size had no effect in the other. Furthermore, the performance of later emerging juveniles did not depend on egg size in either location, possibly because the early emergers had grown or established territories. Thus, selection on offspring size can be complex and vary across short periods of time and small geographic distances, thereby preventing the erosion of genetic variation expected under consistent stabilizing selection. Summary 1. Timing of offspring arrival (i.e. hatching, birth or emergence from nests) is commonly shown to have strong effects on their performance through body size and prior residency effects, but less is known about how such effects differ among species. The strength of such effects tends to be related to competitive intensity (e.g. population density). Variation in timing effects among species may therefore be expected to be related to their competitive ability. 2. Here, we test this hypothesis by conducting sympatric and allopatric competition experiments in two ecologically similar salmonid species, Atlantic salmon and brown trout, at the onset of exogenous feeding. We first test the competitive ability of the two species in sympatric conditions in the absence of timing effects. We then test the strength of timing effects by manipulating this for the two species in allopatric conditions, and evaluate whether any difference in response to timing between the two species corresponds to species-specific competitive abilities. 3. In sympatry, trout outperformed salmon emerging at the same time, despite salmon being 32% larger at the time of emergence. Thus, trout was the stronger competitor. 4. In allopatric treatments, late emerging trout performed significantly poorer in terms of survival and growth than late emerging salmon. Further, dominant trout appeared better able to monopolise resources at higher competitive intensities than dominant salmon. There were also indications that population regulation was stronger in brown trout. Replicates with a high initial density of salmon ended up with twice the final density of low-density replicates, whereas trout ended up with similar final densities across treatments. 5. The results demonstrate that species-level differences in interspecific competitive ability corresponded with a higher intraspecific asymmetric competition among timing phenotypes, resulting in a higher penalty of emerging late in the more aggressive, dominant trout. Further, it suggests that intrinsic competitive abilities may affect the intensity of selection on offspring arrival, and thus likely affect evolution of phenological traits such as breeding time. Successful transitions from relying on yolk to exogenous feeding may be strongly influenced by temperature conditions experienced both during embryonic development, through effects on juvenile phenotype, and during initiation of feeding. Here we simultaneously assess these two effects of temperature treatments (2, 5, 8, and 12 °C) in Atlantic salmon (). Fry emerging from low incubation temperatures were smaller and had metabolized more energy prior to emergence, but had larger yolk sacs and higher mass specific energy levels, than those experiencing higher temperatures. After emergence, activity, feeding, and growth increased significantly with increasing temperature, but fry were able to initiate feeding and maintain positive growth at all four temperatures. Larger energy stores may provide an advantage when emerging at cold temperatures with a low potential for feeding activity, whereas having a large body size, which is primarily of importance in competitive interactions, may be less important owing to cryptic feeding and sheltering at low temperatures. Timing of birth/hatching may have strong effects on offspring fitness. Breeding time is generally considered to have evolved to match offspring arrival with optimal seasonal environmental conditions, though this is rarely tested experimentally and factors shaping the relations between timing of birth and reproductive success are often poorly understood. By manipulating incubation temperature of Atlantic salmon embryos, and hence controlling for maternal and genetic effects, we obtained offspring emerging from nests prior to (accelerated), during and after (decelerated) normal emergence times, and accordingly experienced widely different seasonal environmental conditions at emergence (stream temperature range 4-16 °C). The accelerated group emerged at temperatures that are generally considered to be highly sub-optimal for growth and likely imposes strong constraints on feeding and activity, and during a peak in water discharge which is expected to negatively influence habitat availability. In the wild, overall mortality during the period after emergence was 79%, and was significantly affected by both release density and emergence timing. Accelerated offspring, which emerged earliest and experienced the harshest environmental conditions, had both highest survival and largest final body size. The effect was particularly strong at the high density release site, where survival of accelerated offspring was significantly higher than both the normal and decelerated groups. In more controlled semi-natural environments, all developmental groups were able to perform well, but accelerated offspring had a relatively better performance than the later emerging offspring when density was high. Furthermore, the relative performance of the different groups was not sensitive to water discharge regimes (temporally stable vs. fluctuating). These results suggest that the performance of offspring in relation to seasonal timing of emergence is highly affected by competitive interactions in Atlantic salmon. Although a match between phenology and optimal seasonal environmental conditions may be highly important for organisms depending on specific resources that are only available during a limited period of the season, such resources may be available in variable amounts year around for many organisms. For these, offspring success may to a larger degree be shaped by the timing of their hatching/birth relative to each other, and particularly so under high population densities. Parasite spillback from domestic animals can distort the balance between host and parasites in surrounding wildlife, with potential detrimental effects on wild populations. In aquatic environments, parasite spillback from aquaculture to wild salmon is one of the most contentious sustainability debates. In a 19 year time series of release group studies of Atlantic salmon, we demonstrated that (i) the effect of subjecting out-migrating salmon smolts to parasite treatment on marine survival has been reduced over a time, (ii) the relation between salmon lice levels in the out-migration route of the salmon and effect of treatment against the parasite is weak, but also (iii) the return rates in both treated and untreated groups of salmon are negatively correlated with salmon lice levels, and (iv) returns of wild salmon to the region are similarly negatively correlated with salmon lice levels during the out-migration year. Our study suggests that salmon lice can have a large effect on wild salmon populations that is not revealed with randomized control trials using antiparasitic drugs. Managers and stakeholders increasingly ask whether predation is a driving force behind the poor status of many species, and whether predator control is likely to be a successful management action to intervene. We review existing literature on Atlantic salmon Salmo salar predation and predator control, as well as general ecological theory on the role of predation in the life cycle of this iconic fish. Many bird, mammal, and fish predators target salmon at different life stages. In healthy salmon populations, predation is likely compensated for by reduced intraspecific competition during the freshwater stage. There is little evidence that predation alone has been an underlying mechanism for driving salmon populations below conservation limits. However, depending on the predator's response to salmon abundance, predation may keep decimated populations from recovering, even when the actual causes of decline have been removed. Under such a scenario, predation control may contribute to recovery, but there are no strong examples that clearly demonstrate the efficacy of managing predators to recover threatened salmon populations, challenging further applications. Total dissolved gas (TDG) supersaturation downstream of hydropower plants may cause gas bubble disease (GBD) and harmful effects in fish. Little is known about tolerance levels of TDG supersaturation on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar Linnaeus, 1758) in natural rivers. The present study investigated the effects of TDG supersaturation on the survival of Atlantic salmon smolts at two field sites in Norway. Here, we kept smolts in cages at increasing distances from hydropower plants known to cause TDG supersaturation and at control sites. We recorded fish mortality and examined for GBD using a stereo microscope. Mortality and symptoms of GBD commenced in fish exposed to an average of 108.3% TDG (maximum 111.0%, water depth 0.55 m) for 2 days. Significant differences in time before mortality at the control sites and test sites commenced at 110.2% TDG (maximum 111.8%) for 3 days. The study indicates that Atlantic salmon may be more vulnerable to TDG supersaturation than Pacific salmonids, which are considered at risk when the TDG is above 110%. Many salmonid populations are of conservation concern, and the release of hatchery-produced juveniles is a frequently used measure to alleviate declines and increase harvest opportunities. While such releases may be of conservation value for some populations, stocking may also decrease the effective population size and subsequently impose additional strain on already threatened populations. In this study, we assessed how the cohort-wise effective number of breeders in five populations of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) were affected by supplementation. Altogether, 19 cohorts were studied (2–7 cohorts per population) by estimating the proportion hatchery-released individuals and the effective number of wild and captive breeders in each cohort of the respective populations. We show that the effect of releasing captive-bred individuals varies both between populations and between years within the same population. A Ryman–Laikre effect—where the effective number of breeders has decreased as a consequence of supplementation—was observed for 11 cohorts. We discuss how supplementation can be adapted to optimize the effective population size, demonstrate that evaluation of supplementation can be reliably achieved, and show that supplementation programmes that lead to high proportions of hatchery-origin fish on spawning grounds are more likely to induce a Ryman–Laikre effect. The production of Atlantic salmon in aquaculture has grown substantially over the last 40 years. The unintentional release of domesticated salmon poses a significant risk to the long‐term persistence of wild Atlantic salmon populations through ecological interactions and genetic introgression. Our ability to link aquaculture production to farmed escaped salmon in rivers is still limited and hinders identifying the appropriate production capacity of salmon aquaculture to reduce unwanted interactions between wild and escaped Atlantic salmon.Here we use a 14‐year dataset of farmed escapee abundance in rivers to model how the a priori selected covariables of wild salmon abundance, aquaculture intensity, river discharge, hydropower and fjord placement of the river affects escapee abundance across 54 rivers in western Norway. Then, we evaluate the predictive strength of the model to provide context for its use to minimize escapees.We found that the abundance of escaped farmed Atlantic salmon in rivers is correlated to aquaculture intensity. Furthermore, the abundance of wild Atlantic salmon, mean yearly discharge, and the interaction between fjord placement and wild salmon abundance were important predictors of escapee abundance in rivers.The model was 40% accurate when predicting the abundance of farmed escaped salmon in rivers. However, the accuracy improved to 75% when using risk categories derived from modelled intrusion rates that induced long‐term genetic changes to the wild population (low < 4%, medium 4%–10%, and high > 10% escaped farmed salmon).Synthesis and applications. This study links aquaculture production, at relevant spatiotemporal scales (75 km from rivers), to the abundance of escaped farmed Atlantic salmon in rivers, and provides governmental agencies with a tool to help regulate domesticated salmon production based on the carrying capacity of the system to buffer against introgression between conspecifics. Furthermore, understanding this relationship will be beneficial when establishing new aquaculture sites in pristine ecosystems where they would overlap with wild Atlantic salmon. Finally, future mitigation efforts should continue to focus on new technologies (e.g. triploid females) that can eliminate the risk of introgression without limiting aquaculture production. Rapid dewatering in rivers as a consequence of hydropower operations may cause stranding of juvenile fish and have a negative impact on fish populations. We implemented stranding into an Atlantic salmon population model in order to evaluate long-term effects on the population in the Dale River, Western Norway. Furthermore, we assessed the sensitivity of the stranding model to dewatered area in comparison to biological parameters, and compared different methods for calculating wetted area, the main abiotic input parameter to the population model. Five scenarios were simulated dependent on fish life-stage, season and light level. Our simulation results showed largest negative effect on the population abundance for hydropeaking during winter daylight. Salmon smolt production had highest sensitivity to the stranding mortality of older juvenile fish, suggesting that stranding of fish at these life-stages is likely to have greater population impacts than that of earlier life-stages. Downstream retention effects on the ramping velocity were found to be negligible in the stranding model, but are suggested to be important in the context of mitigation measure design.
