Bianfudong (pinyin for Bat Cave) is a paleolithic site that was recently discovered in Heqing, Yunnan in southwestern China. Several hominin fossils, stone artifacts and more than 69,000 mammal fossils were unearthed in 2019. The hominin fossils and stone artifacts were excavated from the upper part (layers 1–12) of the section with an age range of 180–70 ka BP. Some large mammal fossils and micromammalian remains were collected from the lower part of the section (layers 22–30), which has an age >180 ka BP. This paper describes the micromammalian fossils collected from layers 25–30 and analyzes the fauna composition and paleohabitats. A total of 638 micromammal specimens represent 12 species, including 11 extant species i.e. Euroscaptor longirostris , Blarinella wardi , Anourosorex squamipes , Crocidura vorax , Eothenomys (Anteliomys) chinensis , E. (A.) proditor , Apodemus chevrieri , Ap. draco , Ap. latronum , Micromys minutus , and Niviventer confucianus , and one extinct species Anourosorex qianensis. The two arvicolid Eothenomys species dominate, both in the number of identified specimens and the minimum number of individuals. The composition of the Bianfudong micromammalian fauna can be compared with the faunas of Sanjiacun in Chenggong of Yunnan Province, Mawokoudong in Bijie and Xinglongdong in Fengjie, Guizhou Province. Using the random forest model with modern meteorological data, we calculated the mean annual precipitation (MAP) and the mean annual temperature (MAT) for all 11 living species in the Bianfudong. The MAP was inferred as 1008.04 mm, close to modern data in the Heqing area, while the MAT was slightly lower at 12.84 °C. Résumé Depuis le début des années 2000, des travaux portant sur la chronologie des premiers peuplements humains de Chine par les méthodes de la résonance de spin électronique (ESR) sur quartz sédimentaires et de la résonance de spin électronique couplée à l’uranium-thorium (ESR/U-Th) sur dents ont été menés en collaboration par des équipes françaises et chinoises sur quelques sites archéologiques ou géologiques chinois : Yunxian, Dali, Tangshan, Zongwei, Nihewan, Longgupo et plusieurs sites à giganthopithèques du Guangxi. Après une présentation rapide des méthodes de datation utilisées, quelques-uns des résultats majeurs obtenus dans le cadre de cette collaboration sont succinctement présentés et discutés. Since the beginning of the 2000s, studies concerning the chronology of the first human settlements in China were conducted by electron spin resonance (ESR) on sedimentary quartz and electron spin resonance coupled with U-series (ESR/U-series) on teeth in collaboration by French and Chinese teams on some Chinese archaeological or geological sites: Yunxian, Dali, Tangshan, Zongwei, Nihewan, Longgupo and several Giganthopithecus sites in Guangxi. Gigantopithecus blacki was once a common primate during Early Pleistocene, distributed throughout southern China, but then it gradually declined with time and finally became extinct probably during Middle Pleistocene. Black Cave in Guangxi (the Zhuang Nationality Autonomous Region) was the first site yielding G. blacki teeth in-situ in 1956. It also produced numerous mammalian fossils belonging to the typical Middle Pleistocene Stegodon–Ailuropoda fauna from sediments overlying the G. blacki level. The present study carried out coupled ESR/U-series dating study of five Bovidae teeth from this palaeontological layer and obtained a weighted mean age of 383 ± 20 ka for this Stegodon–Ailuropoda fauna. This age estimate on fossil teeth is constrained by two 230 Th/U ages of 404 ± 24 ka and 382 ± 9 ka obtained on speleothems formed below and above the level of the Stegodon–Ailuropoda fauna. The Black Cave Stegodon–Ailuropoda fauna can be therefore correlated with MIS 11, and the remains of G. blacki should be older than 400 ka. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports the discovery of a new mammalian assemblage at Mocun cave in 2000 by the Natural History Museum of Guangxi. The Mocun site is located in a residual karst peak in southwest Guangxi, south China. Abundant mammalian fossil teeth and bones were extracted from relatively thick deposits, well constrained stratigraphically. The results show that 1) the Mocun fauna is composed of typical species of the " Ailuropoda - Stegodon association", including Stegodon, Ailuropoda, Rhinoceros, Pongo, Tapiru s, Megatapirus, and Elephas, common in the Middle to the Late Pleistocene, with a larger portion of modern species; 2) By employing U-series dating (MC-ICP-MS) method on both the soda straw stalactites and mammalian teeth collected from deposits, the age of the Mocun fauna has been constrained between 66 and 101 ka, a transitional period from the interglacial stage MIS5 to the beginning of the last glacial stage (MIS4), representing one of the securely dated Late Pleistocene sites in southern China so far; 3) The composition in large mammals suggests a forested environment which harboured a great biodiversity in large species; 4) The taphonomic analysis indicates that the fossil accumulation is mainly due to activities of porcupines and to water flows; 5) Interestingly, our taxonomic study reveals some changes in the occurrence of Tapirus sinensis and Megatapirus augustus between ∼66 and ∼86 Ka, along with a change in the abundance of artiodactyls versus primates. The giant panda, currently restricted to a small region of central China, was once widely dispersed throughout southern China and even some parts of continental Southeast Asia during the Pleistocene epoch. However, the evolutionary process and intraspecific variation remain poorly understood in light of limited fossil records, which are usually isolated teeth and a few fragmentary skulls and mandibles. Here we report three skulls, two of which are nearly complete, of Ailuropoda melanoleuca baconi from Yanjinggou in China, which represent the best-preserved skull material ever recorded for this paleosubspecies. A. m. baconi, characterized by a large and robust body, extremely developed zygomatic arches, a moderately developed sagittal crest, and a medium-rough external surface of the supraoccipital, exoccipital, and ascending ramus compared with Ailuropoda microta and other paleosubspecies and living subspecies of A. melanoleuca, can be regarded as a valid paleosubspecies. Ailuropoda fovealis or Ailuropoda melanoleuca fovealis turns out to be a synonym of A. m. baconi. The intraspecific variation of A. m. baconi is far more complicated than generally accepted. Based on comparisons with A. microta, A. m. wulingshanensis, and modern Ailuropoda melanoleuca, we propose that the evolutionary tendency of the skull appears to be much clearer than that of the teeth and that the increase in body size and the enhancement of the masticatory system can be deemed as the main evolutionary changes in this part of the Ailuropoda lineage. Meanwhile, our study for the first time provides a numerical age (ca. 0.35–0.26 Ma) for the Yanjinggou fauna, which is generally considered as a mixture of the middle Early Pleistocene fauna and the Mid-Late Pleistocene fauna. Abstract: Located in Southern Italy, the Early Palaeolithic site of Isernia la Pineta has provided numerous palaeontological remains and artefacts in well-defined fluvio-lacustrine sequence. The normal magnetization of the main archaeological layer t3a and 39Ar/40Ar date of 610 ± 10 (2σ) ka, obtained from the immediately overlaying geological level, put the Isernia assemblage in the first part of the Middle Pleistocene. Previous ESR/U-series analyses of Isernia fossil teeth have displayed both recent U-uptake and severe underestimation of the ESR/U-series dates in comparison with the 39Ar/40Ar age. In order to identify the cause of this age underestimation, new analyses were realized in the present study on four bovid teeth directly recovered from the archaeological surface t3a. The ESR/U-series dates obtained were once again strongly underestimated, with an error weighted mean age of 435 ± 24 (1σ) ka. These too young dates could be associated to a change of the environmental γ-dose rate during the geological history of the Isernia site, related to the revealed recent U-uptake into the palaeontological remains of the archaeological level. If we consider that this dose rate change was coeval with a wet interglacial period and taking the 39Ar/40Ar age as geochronological reference, simulations with two dose rate steps indicate that this change could be correlated with marine isotopic stage 7 (MIS 7). This report describes fossils recovered from Ganxian Cave in 2008 and 2018 by the Natural History Museum and Anthropology Museum of Guangxi. The cave sedimentary fill yielded rich mammalian fossils consisting mainly of isolated teeth of medium- to large-sized mammals (Primates, Proboscidea, Perissodactyla, Carnivora, Rodentia, Artiodactyla) of typical ‘Ailuropoda-Stegodon’ fauna, (e.g. Stegodon orientalis, Ailuropoda baconi, Pongo weidenreichi, Tapirus sinensis, Megatapirus augustus, Crocuta ultima), and more numerous extant species belonging to 28 taxa in total. The biochronological age of the fauna agreed with the age estimates obtained using Uranium–series and coupled ESR/U-series dating. Collectively, these results indicate a Ganxian fossil age range of 168.9 ± 2.4 ka to 362 ± 78 ka and establish Ganxian Cave as one of the most precisely dated Middle Pleistocene fossil sites in southern China. Comparison of Ganxian fauna with Pleistocene fossil records of the well-documented faunas of southern China and southeast Asia indicates that the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) probably first appeared in Ganxian Cave. Paleoenvironmental reconstruction-based analysis of the large mammalian fossil assemblage from Ganxian Cave indicates that during the late Middle Pleistocene, the habitat consisted mainly of forests with some open areas and the climate was warm and humid. The Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI) assesses visceral fat and related metabolic risks. However, its precise correlation with sarcopenia is unclear. This study aimed to examine this correlation. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using NHANES data from 2011 to 2018. To correct VAI skewness, a logarithmic transformation was applied. Multiple covariates were included, and logistic regression was employed to explore the relationship between VAI and sarcopenia. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) and threshold saturation analyses were used to investigate the nonlinear relationship. Subgroup analyses evaluated the effects of various stratification factors. Sensitivity and additive analyses tested the robustness of the findings. The study included 4688 individuals. Participants with sarcopenia had significantly higher VAI values. Logistic regression revealed a significant positive connection between Log VAI and sarcopenia (OR 2.09, 95% CI 1.80–2.43) after adjusting for variables. RCS analysis showed a nonlinear correlation, identifying a breakpoint at VAI = 1.51. To the left of this breakpoint, each unit increase in VAI significantly correlated with a higher likelihood of sarcopenia (OR 2.54, 95% CI 1.74–3.79); to the right, increases in VAI did not significantly affect prevalence. Subgroup analyses suggested VAI as an independent risk factor. Sensitivity and additive analyses confirmed the main findings' robustness. Among American adults, the VAI is significantly associated with sarcopenia, with higher VAI values potentially increasing the prevalence of sarcopenia. North African coastal Middle Stone Age (MSA) sites are key to study the development and expansion of early H. sapiens. El Mnasra cave on the Atlantic coast of Morocco (Témara region) is a crucial site associated with MSA archaeological materials considered advanced cognitive hallmarks of behavioural innovation, such as numerous Nassariidae perforated shells, hematite pigments, bones industry and coastal resources exploitation. We provide new trapped-charges dates (OSL and combined US-ESR ages). Our Bayesian modelling strengthens the new lithostratigraphic interpretation of the cave stratigraphic units (US) and we propose an updated chronostratigraphic model for the Middle Stone Age archaeo-sequence of El Mnasra Cave. We confirm a human presence between 124–104 ka, earlier than what the previous OSL and US-ESR data showed. Our time range intervals allowed us to also extend the age of the MSA occupations considerably to the MIS 4/3 (~62–30 ka), marked by the disappearance of the Nassariidae perforated shells. Outstandingly, our model pushed back the age of the largest record of Nassariidae perforated shells and placed the age of their use by the Aterian groups at El Mnasra from the MIS 5d-5b (~115–94 ka). In the Basilicata region, located in southern Italy and known for hosting among the first occurrences of the Acheulean culture in southwestern Europe, the Lower Paleolithic site of Loreto at Venosa is located less than a kilometer from the emblematic site of Notarchirico and less than 25 km from Cimitero di Atella. The Loreto site has not been studied as thoroughly as the two other sites and, although geological investigations have been carried out in the Venosa basin, no direct numerical dating has ever been published for the three archaeological levels brought to light during the excavation campaigns. We present a multi-method geochronological approach combining ESR/U-series, ESR, and 40Ar/39Ar permitting to refine the age of the most ancient archaeological level (A) of the Loreto site. These data allow us to propose an MIS 13 age for this level, in accordance with previous hypotheses based on geological and paleontological data. We also propose a technical review of the lithic tools preserved in the collection of the National Archaeological Museum of Venosa to integrate Loreto in the evolution scheme of the European Acheulean techno-complex emergence and diffusion. Chronological sequences of Quaternary terrestrial mammalian faunas can provide important information about the evolutionary history of mammals, regional biostratigraphy and paleoenvironmental changes. Here we report the results of studies of a thick, nearly-continuous sedimentary sequence from Jinyuan Cave, in Liaoning Province, northeast China; the sequences contains four mammalian faunas ranging in age from the Late Pliocene to the late Middle Pleistocene. Detailed paleomagnetic and U-series age determinations date the upper unit of the sedimentary sequence to ~2.2–0.3 Ma. The results suggest that cave development and infilling were closely associated with the tectonic evolution of the Bohai Basin, including the subsidence of the basin and the uplift of the surrounding mountains, such as Luotuo Hill. Together with the large mammalian faunas from both south and north China, we suggest that these mammalian faunas were smaller in size and lower in species diversity during the Middle Pleistocene Transition (MPT) (1.2–0.7 Ma) than in the earlier and later Pleistocene. This indicates that major climatic variations during the MPT in north China may have reduced their taxonomic abundance and diversity. The extremely warm and wet interglacial climates that followed the MPT in monsoonal East Asia provided an ecological niche for the evolution and migration of these mammalian faunas, resulting in an increase in the numbers and diversity of mammals in East Asia. The rarity of Pongo fossils with precise absolute dating from the Middle Pleistocene hampers our understanding of the taxonomy and spatiotemporal distribution of Quaternary orangutans in southern China. Here, we report a newly discovered sample of 113 isolated teeth of fossil Pongo from Zhongshan Cave in the Bubing Basin, Guangxi, southern China. We describe the Pongo specimens from Zhongshan Cave and compare them metrically to other samples of fossil Pongo species (i.e., Pongo weidenreichi , Pongo devosi , Pongo duboisi , Pongo palaeosumatrensis , Pongo javensis , and Pongo sp.) and to extant orangutans (i.e., Pongo pygmaeus and Pongo abelii). The Zhongshan Pongo assemblage is dated using U-series and coupled electron spin resonance/U-series methods. Our results reasonably constrain the Zhongshan Pongo assemblage to 184 ± 16 ka, which is consistent with the biostratigraphic evidence. The Zhongshan Pongo teeth are only 6.5% larger on average than those of extant Pongo. The Zhongshan teeth are smaller overall than those of Pongo from all other cave sites in southern China, and they currently represent the smallest fossil orangutans in southern China. Based on their dental size, and the presence of a well-developed lingual pillar and lingual cingulum on the upper and lower incisors, an intermediate frequency of lingual cingulum remnants on the upper molars, and a higher frequency of moderate to heavy wrinkling on the upper and lower molars, we provisionally assign the Zhongshan fossils to P. devosi. Our results confirm earlier claims that P. weidenreichi is replaced by a smaller species in southern China, P. devosi , by the late Middle Pleistocene. The occurrence of P. devosi in Zhongshan Cave further extends its spatial and temporal distribution. The Pongo specimens from Zhongshan provide important new evidence to demonstrate that the dental morphological features of Pongo in southern China changed substantially during the late Middle Pleistocene. To date, in Africa, evidence for animal processing and consumption in caves routinely used as living spaces is only documented in the late Middle Pleistocene of the North and South of the continent and postdates the Middle Pleistocene in East Africa. Here we report the earliest evidence in a North-African cave (Grotte des Rhinocéros at Casablanca, Morocco) of cut, percussion and human gnawing marks on faunal remains directly associated with lithic knapping activities in the same space and in a well-documented stratified context. Ages for this Acheulean site are provided by the dating of herbivorous teeth to 690–720 ka and 520–550 ka (lower and upper sets) by combined Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) and U-series techniques. Traces of butchery on gazelle, alcelaphin, and zebra bones demonstrate that hominins had primary access to herbivore carcasses. Hominins brought and consumed meat in the cave, as documented by herbivore bones bearing human tooth marks concentrated in a circumscribed area of the excavation. In Africa, this site provides the earliest evidence for in situ carcass processing and meat-eating in cave, directly associated with lithic production and demonstrates the recurrent use by early Middle Pleistocene hominins of a North African cave site 400 000 years before that by Homo sapiens at Jebel Irhoud (Morocco). A precisely 230Th-dated stalagmite δ13C profile from Hulu Cave, China, is presented to characterize the frequency and pattern of millennial-scale Asian monsoon (AM) variability from 160.6 to 132.5 ka. Evidence for an antiphased relationship of the δ13C and δ18O on the millennial scale suggests that the δ13C is indicative of the local hydrological cycle associated with changes in AM strength. Owing to the δ13C responding to AM changes more sensitively than the δ18O, we could identify 15 strong AM events that correlate to cold intervals recorded in Antarctic ice cores within 230Th dating uncertainty. This result supports a dynamic link of AM strength and southern hemispheric climates via the cross-equatorial airflows. Power spectrum analysis shows a predominant periodicity of 1.5–2.5 ka for the δ13C profile, similar to the Dansgaard-Oeschger frequency during the last glacial period. Moreover, the AM events are characterized by rapid transitions at the onset, suggesting that the observed millennial-scale AM variability is likely forced by northern high-latitude climates via north–south shifts of the Intertropical Convergence Zone associated with the bipolar seesaw mechanism. As evidence for a common mechanism for ice age terminations, a strong AM event (~134 ka) surrounding Termination II is analogous to the Bølling-Allerød warming interval. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Pongo fossil record of China extends from the Early Pleistocene to the Late Pleistocene, but to date, no late Middle Pleistocene samples of Pongo with precise absolute dating have been identified in southern China. Here, we report the recovery of 106 fossil teeth of Pongo from Ganxian Cave in the Bubing Basin, Guangxi, southern China. We dated the speleothems using Uranium-series and dated the two rhinoceros teeth using coupled electron spin resonance/Uranium-series dating methods to between 168.9 ± 2.4 ka and 362 ± 78 ka, respectively. These dates are consistent with the biostratigraphic and magnetostratigraphic age estimates. We further describe the fossil teeth from Ganxian Cave and compare them metrically to samples of fossil Pongo (i.e., Pongo weidenreichi , Pongo duboisi , Pongo palaeosumatrensis , Pongo javensis , and Pongo sp.) from the Early, Middle, and Late Pleistocene and to extant Pongo (i.e., Pongo pygmaeus and Pongo abelii) from Southeast Asia. Based on overall dental size, a high frequency of lingual cingulum remnants on the upper molars, and a low frequency of moderate to heavy wrinkling on the molars, we attribute the Ganxian fossils to P. weidenreichi. Compared with Pongo fossils from other mainland Southeast Asia sites, those from Ganxian confirm that dental size reduction of Pongo occurred principally during the Early and Middle Pleistocene. From the Middle to Late Pleistocene, all teeth except the P3 show little change in occlusal area, indicating that the size of these teeth remained relatively stable over time. The evolutionary trajectory of the Pongo dentition through time may be more complex than previously thought. More orangutan fossils with precise dating constraints are the keys to solving this issue. The 4.2 ka climate event, which marks the start of the late Holocene (Meghalayan), is linked to disruption to human cultures across a wide belt from the eastern Mediterranean to the Yangtze River Valley. Here we present a high-resolution stalagmite δ13C record for the middle Yangtze Valley from 4.4 to 3.0 ka BP, and identify two humid pulses and two dry episodes associated with the 4.2 ka event. Similar hydroclimate fluctuations associated with the 4.2 ka event also occur in the Chinese Loess Plateau and Central Plains of China, and may be at least partly responsible for the decline of the Neolithic culture in these regions. Although the 4.2 ka event marks the internationally recognised boundary between the middle and late Holocene, our stalagmite-based evidence shows that regime shift in hydrological variability occurred at ∼3.5 ka BP in the middle Yangtze Valley. Regime shift correlates with inflection points of temperature in the extratropical Northern Hemisphere and tropical El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) systems, indicating teleconnections between local and global climate change at this time. Following regime shift, precipitation fluctuated with a larger amplitude. Two dry events and one humid rebound event correspond to the early, late, and middle phases of the Shang Dynasty, respectively. Yanlidong is a cave site in southern China where a diversity of vertebrate palaeontological fossils were recently discovered. Our previous study showed that the Yanlidong sediments can be divided into an early stage and a late stage. Here, we report our analysis of the mammal fossils from the deposits of the Early Stage in Yanlidong (DES-YLD). The age of DES-YLD is constrained to around 600 ka by Uranium-series dating on fossil teeth and layered flowstones. The fauna is characterised by the occurrence of extant taxa plentifully, but also a number of extinct species. Our paleoenvironmental and taphonomic analysis of the DES-YLD fauna indicates that the local environment was covered by subtropical forest and located in a shrub environment near water and rodents were largely responsible for the accumulation and modification of the macromammal remains. The findings from YLD serve to fill an important gap in the Early Middle Pleistocene of southern China. Besides the reconstructions of the paleoenvironment, it is interesting to observe that a large number of Early Pleistocene extinct taxa were replaced by species during the Early Middle Pleistocene that are still extant today. The rainfall changes in East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) regions on the orbital timescale remain controversial due to the lack of reliable rainfall records. Here, we present new multiproxy records (δ18O, δ13C, Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca) of a 230Th-dated stalagmite from Hulu Cave in central eastern China. Multiproxy records reconstruct a regional hydroclimate history from 340 to 261 kyr BP (thousand years before present), approximately covering the antepenultimate glacial period. The δ18O record is dominated by the precessional cycles, suggesting that EASM responds to changes in Northern Hemisphere summer insolation (NHSI) on the orbital timescale. Significant correlations amongst the δ13C, Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca suggest that a common factor, i.e., the local hydrological cycle, controlled their variability, and their leading principal component can be used as a proxy linked to regional rainfall. This composite record bears a good similarity to those from the Chinese Loess Plateau, showing a gradually decreasing rainfall during the antepenultimate glacial period, consistent with changes in global ice volume. Superimposed on the long-term trend, three relative wetter intervals were responding to the higher NHSI periods, suggesting that EASM rainfall variability was induced by integrated effects of global ice volume and NHSI. The increased ice sheets and lower NHSI resulted in an increased meridional temperature gradient and southward shift of the westerlies, which shortened the duration of Meiyu and midsummer rainfall. The differences between the rainfall record and the stalagmite δ18O record indicate that the latter represents the overall EASM intensity linked to monsoon circulation, but does not directly reflect the rainfall changes at the cave sites. The age when the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) transitioned to a bamboo dominant diet has not been well established due to the lack of fossil evidence. In particular, a radial sesamoid bone, which acts as a 'pseudo-thumb', has been used as evidence of giant pandas' adaptive evolution to bamboo specialised consumption, but no relevant fossil evidence has been reported thus far. Shuanghe Cave is the longest cave in Asia, and produced fossils of more than 20 giant pandas, including relatively intact fossil skeletons of two adult giant pandas. The uranium-series dating of the fossilised teeth of the two giant pandas indicates ages earlier than 102 ka and 49 ka. Tooth wear for both individuals is not apparent, indicating that they were young at the time of death. From the skeletal fossils, for the first time, a 'pseudo-thumb' fossil of a giant panda was discovered. Our morphological comparison indicated that as early as 100,000 years ago, giant pandas had evolved an enlarged radial sesamoid bone (pseudo-thumb) that is comparable to that of the modern pandas, suggesting that in the early Late Pleistocene at the latest, giant pandas possessed physical conditions allowing them to dexterously grab bamboo with their manuss. Spatial differences of rainfall in monsoonal China during the last glacial period remain contentious. Here, we present new 230Th-dated stalagmite records (δ13C and δ18O) from central China (the Yangtze River valley), spanning approximately 75–10 ka BP, to address this issue. We interpret the stalagmite δ13C variations primarily as indicators of regional rainfall changes, which show significantly decreased rainfall during MIS 4 and late MIS 3 to MIS 2. On the millennial timescale, the δ13C record indicates decreased rainfall during Heinrich (H) events and increased rainfall during Dansgaard-Oeschger interstadials. The strong correlations between our δ13C record and the westerly proxies suggest that the westerly jet played a crucial role in influencing rainfall patterns in monsoonal China throughout the last glacial period. We propose that rainfall changes in central China were consistent with northern China on both orbital and millennial timescales during the last glacial period. This observation contrasts with the modern rainfall differences between northern and central China. Our results imply that with a colder climate in high northern latitudes, the rain belt over monsoonal China influenced by the westerly jet shifted further south beyond the Yangtze River Valley during MIS 4, late MIS 3 to MIS 2 and H events, leading to a consistent decrease in rainfall over central and northern China. In contrast to the rainfall records, the stalagmite δ18O values were more negative during late MIS 3. The δ18O variations on the orbital timescale are likely related to the changes in the tropical ocean conditions controlled by insolation, which determines the δ18O values in evaporated moisture before its transport into the Asian continent. A multi-proxy (δ18O, δ13C and trace elements) analysis of an absolutely-dated stalagmite in northern China is conducted to reconstruct the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) intensity and local hydroclimate conditions during the period of 53.8–47.4 ka (BP, before 1950 CE). Our δ18O and δ13C records, with 24-yr resolution, clearly register the Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) events 14 and 13. A clear double-peak structure for DO13, as previously detected in the NGRIP ice core, is identified in our δ18O and δ13C records, for the first time. This strong correspondence at the finer time-scale indicates a sensitive and rapid response of the EASM system to the North Atlantic climate changes through air-sea coupling. Our δ18O record shows that the EASM intensity deceased abruptly during latter stage of DO14 (51.1–50.3 ka). This abrupt change is different from other stalagmite δ18O records from central and southern China. On the other hand, both the δ13C and trace element records, representing local hydroclimatic changes, match well with the δ18O record, reflecting an integrated EASM system, on the timescale of the DO cycles. The covariance suggests that the hydrological variation in northern China could be modulated by the movement of the large-scale EASM circulation. Further comparison displays an anti-correlated relationship between the millennial precipitation changes in northern and southeastern China during the period of 51.5–47.4 ka. This anti-correlation is analogous to the "North-South" dipole mode in observed present-day precipitation. The pattern and cause of middle-to late-Holocene hydroclimatic variability in central-west China remain unclear. We present a new pair of stalagmite isotopic (δ18O and δ13C) records and trace element ratio (Mg/Ca, Ba/Ca, and Sr/Ca) records from Jinfo Cave, central-west China. We established a uranium-series chronology that shows that the stalagmite grew between 5.6 and 0.6 kyr BP. The similarities between our δ18O stalagmite record and other published records suggest that δ18O generally reflects overall monsoon intensity or rained-out effect between the cave site and moisture source, but not necessarily regional rainfall amount. Corresponding changes in Mg/Ca, Ba/Ca, Sr/Ca, and δ13C are mostly dependent on local factors, such as the nature of the ecosystem above the cave, water-rock interactions, and the prior calcite precipitation effect. As the δ13C records bear a remarkable resemblance to Mg/Ca, Ba/Ca, and Sr/Ca records, we extracted the first principal component (PC1) of the four records and identified the PC1 as a regional hydroclimate proxy. The bandpass filter and cross wavelet transformation results show that the ∼500 years periodicity of PC1 exhibits in-phase oscillations with solar activity and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) throughout the middle to late Holocene, suggesting that changes in solar activity influence centennial hydroclimate variation and are amplified by ENSO. Another prominent feature seen in PC1 is a progressive positive shift from 3.0 kyr BP, which indicates that central-west China moved toward a drier climate over this period. High-resolution stalagmite δ18O records, representing Asian summer monsoon (ASM) intensity, were reconstructed from Wulu and Xiao caves, southwestern China, over Chinese Interstadials (CIS) 25 and 22. A most prominent feature of these stalagmite records is a persistent ASM strengthening throughout the entire event, different from a gradual cooling in corresponding events at Greenland and Antarctica. It implicates that the cooling in the Southern Hemisphere may intensify the ASM circulation through increased cross-equatorial flow, which overwhelms the northern high-latitude impact. Combined with previous published records over the past two interglacial-glacial cycles, diverse trends of CIS events generally match with changes in North Hemisphere summer insolation (NHSI). Accordingly, three modes of CIS ASM variability can be observed, i.e., ASM strengthening when NHSI increases, weakening when NHSI decreases, and a relatively stable ASM during NHSI peak. We argue that NHSI variability or interhemispheric gradient could change the strength of cross-equatorial flow, and in turn, alter the landward transport of monsoonal moisture. The role of natural forces in ecological degradation remains controversial owing to the scarcity of records of past land cover destruction with no or less anthropogenic disturbance. Here, we reconstructed land cover changes during the Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS3) in the Nanling Mountains in southern China using the δ13C and saturation magnetisation (M s) records of a speleothem from Zuixian Cave. The persistently positive δ13C values since 51.9 ka B.P. suggest vegetation reduction and karst rocky desertification in the Nanling Mountains. This prolonged ecological degradation was exposed to reduced precipitation, weak pedogenesis (as indicated by less depleted δ18O ratios and low M s values), and recurring forest fires. Our results highlight the critical role of natural forces in ecosystem degradation, challenging the view of human domination on environmental change. Asian summer monsoon (ASM) and regional rainfall responses to external and internal forcings remain actively debated, especially at significant climate transitions. Here we present decadally-resolved stalagmite stable isotope (δ18O and δ13C) and trace element records from central China to reconstruct Asian hydroclimate variability across the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 7/6 transition. The results demonstrate that the maximum level of effective precipitation (or precipitation/evaporation, P/E), derived from δ13C and element records, is practically similar between MIS 7.0 and early MIS 6.5, punctuated by a series of centennial-scale moisture-deficit events, in contrast to precessional-scale ASM changes (i.e., δ18O). At millennial scale, the ASM decline is positively correlated to P/E changes, with an exponential relationship between them. It reveals that Earth's boundary conditions could differently modulate ASM and P/E changes at orbital scale, while internal forcings can generate synchronous responses. Moreover, the ASM intensity and P/E conditions exhibit enhanced instability into MIS 6, about 1.5 times in amplitude of MIS 7. These millennial-scale hydroclimate variations are in line with a rise of Northern Hemisphere summer insolation, an El Niño/La Niña transition, the increased seasonality and high-frequency tropical climate variability. Recently, rich fossiliferous deposits dated to the late Cenozoic have been discovered from Jinyuan Cave at Luotuo Hill, an extremely large-sized cave site situated within in the Dalian Puwan Economic Zone of Dalian Municipality, Liaoning Province in Northeast China. Abundant and diverse vertebrate fossils unearthed from different fossiliferous layers of Jinyuan Cave, a site of enormous size with a sedimentary thickness of over 40 m and its deposits can be roughly divided into three fossiliferous deposit units, altogether containing six fossiliferous layers belonging to different ages from the Late Pliocene to the Middle Pleistocene. Based on a combination of biostratigraphic and geochronological evidence, the fossil assemblages from Jinyuan Cave can be divided into three successive faunas that span the Late Cenozoic (ca. 3.60–0.35 Ma): the Wanghai fauna from upper faunal unit (Middle Pleistocene, 0.78–0.35 Ma), the Jinyuan fauna from middle-lower faunal unit (Early Pleistocene, 2.60–0.78 Ma) and the Luotuoshan fauna of the bottommost faunal unit (Late Pliocene, 3.6–2.6 Ma). The mammalian faunal evolution of Jinyuan Cave can be divided into four temporal stages during the late Cenozoic. The new discovered Jinyuan Cave provides a unique and nearly-continuous faunal and sedimentary sequence stretching from the Late Pliocene to the Middle Pleistocene, hugely significant for establishing the Quaternary Mammal Fauna Sequence of Northeast China for the first time based on a combination of biostratigraphy, geochronology, and for discussing the environmental background. A large number of hominin fossil-bearing caves in South China have yielded evidence for the occupation of early modern humans during the Middle to Late Pleistocene. However, the geology of these caves and the paleoenvironmental context of human occupation remain poorly documented and understood. In this study, we obtained new ages yielded by MC-ICPMS uranium-series dating of speleothems from Zhiren Cave, Guangxi, where a partial early modern human mandible and 2 M have been recovered. The ages demonstrate that cave infilling of Zhiren Cave began at ~1 Ma, much earlier than the date previously suggested. Our dating results also suggest that fossils of anatomically modern human were deposited in Zhiren Cave during marine isotope stage (MIS) 6, between ~190 and ~130 ka, representing the oldest known anatomically modern human remains in East Asia. The cave's sedimentary processes and the paleoenvironmental changes were reconstructed based on detailed analyses of lithostratigraphy, grain-size, pollen assemblages and the chemical weathering intensity of the sediments inside Zhiren Cave. The results show that major climatic changes in the Middle Pleistocene led to the accelerated incision of local streams and the erosion of cave sediments by controlling the regional hydrological response during the Early to Middle Pleistocene. After ~300 ka, increased climatic contrasts between glacial and interglacial periods dominated the accumulation of sediments and the occupation of mammals and early modern humans in Zhiren Cave. Gradually desiccating climatic conditions and reduced forest cover during the penultimate glacial period (MIS 6) may have define a temporal window for the human occupation of Zhiren Cave, providing ideal environmental conditions. However, floodwater incursion and/or dense vegetation cover corresponding to a much warmer and wetter climate in the subsequent last interglacial (MIS 5) may have discouraged humans from further occupying Zhiren Cave. – Tourville-la-Rivière (Normandy, France) is one of the rare Middle Pleistocene palaeoanthropological localities of Northern France. Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) and combined ESR/U-series dating methods were independently applied by different teams on sediments and teeth from this site. The present work provides an overview of this multi-laboratory dating work by integrating a description and discussion of the methodologies employed and results obtained. Results confirm that the ESR/U-series analyses of the teeth are greatly dependent on the U-uptake histories of the dental tissues. Although all teeth come from the same archeological level, the samples analysed by each team display two different patterns for the U-series data. This is most likely related to the different sampling areas selected by each team and may be interpreted as the result of local variations in the geochemical conditions of the surrounding environment. Concerning the ESR dating of optically bleached quartz grains, the use of the multiple centre approach seems crucial when dating such fluvial and fluvio-lacustrine sediments. Our results also confirm the great potential of the Ti-H centre to date late Middle Pleistocene deposits. Despite some (expected) discrepancies related to the independent use of parameters and approaches by the different teams involved in this multi-laboratory study, the whole ESR and ESR/U-series data set collected from Tourville-la-Rivière locality consistently correlates stratigraphic levels D1 to I and associated human occupation to MIS7. This paper presents new archaeological material and first dates on Upper Pleistocene layers at the site of La Crouzade cave (Gruissan, Aude, France). The site was first excavated by T. and P. Héléna at the beginning of the twentieth century, and the excavations were recently completed during three years (2016–2018) of systematic campaigns. We obtained dates from Middle Palaeolithic layers using two methods: AMS 14C dates were obtained from bone and charcoal, and combined ESR-U series dating was undertaken on horse teeth. Together, these methods allowed us to date this Mousterian sequence to 49,776–44805 cal BP for the deepest level (layer C8) and from 42,000 ± 3000 years BP for the top (layer C6). The Upper Palaeolithic layers are preserved only as patches in the actual excavation area, but a date was obtained from a piece of charcoal collected from a small hearth preserved in the first layer (C5) above Middle Palaeolithic deposits, which indicates an age similar to that of a modern human maxillary previously analysed and re-dated here from 36,014 to 34402 cal BP, confirming its stratigraphic attribution. The Middle Palaeolithic lithics at the site were first described as para-Charentian cultural facies following typological analyses. The revision of the earlier collection supplemented with the new material, using a technological approach, allow to identify two layers dominated by Levallois production followed by discoid production (Layers C8 and C6) surrounding an original assemblage (layer C7), characterised by a dominant Levallois production completed by three secondary production systems of equal importance, including discoid, SSDA and a Quina-like production. The faunal spectrum predominantly comprises an assemblage of Pleistocene large mammals, and biochronological studies corroborate the dates obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 230Th/U-dated stalagmite from Hulu Cave was analyzed for δ18O, δ13C, and trace elements. A ~10-yr-resolution δ18O record, spanning 51.7–42.6 ka, revealed Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) events 14 to 11. A similar rapid transition and synchronous timing of the onset of DO 12 is evident between the Greenland and Hulu Cave records, which suggests a common forcing mechanism of DO cycles in the North Atlantic and monsoonal region of Asia. Centennial-scale monsoonal oscillations in the cave δ18O record are indicative of hydroclimatic instability during interstadials. After removing the signals of remote moisture sources, the proportion of moisture from nearby sources is found to be higher during stadials than during interstadials. To explain this, we propose that the movement of the westerly jet is an important control on the balance of nearby and distant moisture sources in East Asia. In addition, the records of δ13C and trace element ratios, which are proxies of local environmental changes, resemble the δ18O record on the scale of DO cycles, as well as on even shorter timescales. Southern China and Southeast Asia were favourable habitats for foragers during the Last Glacial Maximum (∼25–18 ka BP) and the Last Deglaciation (∼18–11.7 ka BP), despite various climate fluctuation. However, the underlying subsistence strategies in these areas remains unclear, due to the lack of systematic chronological and archaeological data. The current study reports new results of radiocarbon dating, U-series dating, and zooarchaeological analysis from the Naminan cave site, located at the boundary between Southern China and Southeast Asia. It reveals that deer was consumed as the primary source of meat (91.7 %), supplemented by turtles, wild oxen, monkeys, wild boars, and mustelids during ∼17.35–16.49 ka BP. The subsequent period of ∼15.55–15.35 ka BP saw a radical declining proportion of deer, with various new species being consumed, such as shrews, porcupines, fish, crab, canidae, and wild cat. Human occupation of the Naminan cave site might have lasted until the Early Holocene. Comparing archaeological and paleoclimate evidence from Southern China and Southeast Asia, it is reasonable to argue that a progressively drier and colder climate during ∼17.35–15.35 ka BP appeared to trigger a remarkable decline in human activity but greater range of diets in locations such as the Naminan cave and Yuchanyan sites, facilitating further expansion of hunting-gathering groups during the late phase of the Last Deglaciation with warm and humid climate. Knowing the behavior of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) and its global correlation help understand roles of the ASM in global climate change. Here we synthesize a stalagmite δ18O record, based on a new record and an available nearby record, both covering the nearly entire Holocene. The synthesized δ18O record correlates with meridional migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), and with change in inter-subtropical insolation contrast throughout the Holocene. However, its correlation with the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) broken down during the period of the strongest ASM, when the AMOC weakened. This scenario points to a persistent influence of the ITCZ and subtropical insolation contrast on the change in ASM throughout the Holocene. Our record also correlates with a change in atmospheric CO 2 concentration on the multi-millennial scale. These correlations of our cave record with variations in the ITCZ, subtropical insolation contrast, and CO 2 level indicate that changes in low-latitude climates, including the ASM, were involved in the evolution of the Holocene CO 2 concentration. These changes in the low-latitude climates were likely connected with variation in the Holocene southern westerly wind, which modulated upwelling of carbon-enriched deep ocean water around Antarctica. On the multi-centennial scale, seven weak ASM events are identified, with the magnitudes of the Younger Dryas and the events at 9.8 ka and 8.2 ka event broadly three and two times larger than the other ones. These events have a quasi-period of approximately 1.463 ka. This period in the monsoon regime probably arose from solar activity, but involving the feedback of ENSO. • A pronounced shift in Asian monsoon is identified during the last interglacial. • There were two monsoon phases in the latter last interglacial. • Rapid demise of the last interglacial Asian monsoon was due to the gradual decrease of summer insolation. The last interglacial contains information about how climate behaves during a warm period comparable to the current interval. However, there is no consensus on the key signatures and force of the last interglacial climate changes at present. Here we present a high-resolution stalagmite oxygen isotope record from central China, which spans from 123.3 to 116.8 ka. The stalagmite δ18O time-series bears a resemblance to changes in Northern Hemisphere summer insolation before the demise of the last interglacial, like the condition during the Holocene. Superimposed on the long-term δ18O record is a pronounced shift to more positive values at around 121.6 ka, indicating a switch of the Asian monsoon mean state into a weaker condition. This monsoon shift correlates with a decrease in the mean state of the South American Summer Monsoon, and a well-known abrupt mid-Eemian cooling event at high latitudes. These correlations indicate broad-scale features of the climate shift over the warm last interglacial. Another positive δ18O shift of up to 3.5‰ occurred at around 120 ka, representing the demise of the last interglacial Asian monsoon. By comparing the stalagmite δ18O records against changes in ice volume and summer insolation during the last interglacial and recent Holocene, respectively, we conclude that the decreasing Northern Hemisphere summer insolation dominated the rapid demise of the last interglacial in the Asian monsoon region. Instrumental and historic records have shown that the hydroclimatic variability on interannual- to decadal-timescales over eastern China is spatially different, with a meridional dipole or even tripole pattern. Yet, how this spatial pattern of hydroclimate change on centennial timescales looks like is still unclear due to the lack of well-reconstructed climate records from South China. Here, we present a precisely-dated, high-resolution δ18O record of stalagmite (JL2) from Jiuluo Cave, Guilin, South China, to elucidate the hydroclimatic variability in South China over the last millennium and thus explore the spatial pattern and cause of centennial-scale hydroclimatic variability across eastern China. Based on the previous results of modern cave monitoring carried out in the Guilin region, the δ18O of JL2 is carefully interpreted as a robust proxy for summer monsoonal rainfall change. It clearly shows that a decrease in monsoonal rainfall over South China occurred during the periods of 941–1250 CE (i.e. the Medieval Warm Period (MWP)) and 1550–1850 CE (late Little Ice Age (LIA)), while intensification of monsoonal rainfall occurred during 1250–1550 CE (early LIA) and since 1850 CE (the Current Warm Period). Comparison of the JL2 record with other well-reconstructed proxy records from different zones along the trajectory of the East Asia summer monsoon (EASM) allows us to depict the spatial variation in centennial-scale monsoonal rainfall over eastern China. We confirmed that a "wet northern and dry southern" pattern existed for the rainfall regime of eastern China during the MWP, and a "dry northern and wet southern" pattern during the early LIA. Furthermore, there was a tripole pattern showing dry conditions in both North and South China but wet condition in the Jianghuai area, central China during the late LIA. These spatial patterns of centennial-scale monsoonal rainfall variability were principally linked to changes in summer monsoon intensity and the long-live state of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). We also found that solar activity could influence the monsoonal rainfall to some degrees, and reduced monsoonal rainfall often occurred during intervals of solar minimum. Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage 12 (MIS 12), the last glacial period before the Mid-Brunhes event (MBE), is considered the coldest glacial period during the past several glacial/interglacial cycles and is important because it can help better understand the cyclicity and mechanism of the millennial-scale variability of a glacial period. However, owing to the lack of precisely dated and high-temporal-resolution records, the millennial-scale variability during this period remains unclear. A 230Th/U dated stalagmite from Luoshui Cave, Hubei Province, Central China, was analyzed for stable oxygen isotopes (δ18O). An ∼120-yr-resolution δ18O profile is presented to clarify the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) history between 464 and 420.6 kyr BP (Before present, where present = 1950 CE), which corresponds to the interval from the MIS 12 to the early part of the MIS 11. The MIS 12 monsoon generally followed the insolation differences on June 21 between 30°N and 30°S and was interrupted by ten Chinese interstadial events (CISs). At least nine prominent weak monsoon intervals (WMIs) were identified during MIS 12 and displayed a strong coupling with the northern high-latitude climate and Antarctic temperature through the bipolar seesaw model, suggesting a substantial relationship with the bipolar region. This indicates that millennial-scale variability in the ASM region is an inherent feature of the MBE and has a global teleconnection. Additionally, in contrast to the EPICA DOME C3 (EDC 3) timescale, the new absolutely dated speleothem record confirms the Antarctic Ice Core Chronology 2012 (AICC 2012) at MIS 12, a period with a large difference between the two ice record geochronologies over the past 800 kyr. • A high resolution and precision dating stalagmite record was presented to clarify the ASM history of MIS 12 in China. • The new record over the MIS 12 follows orbitally induced insolation variations and is interrupted by thirteen CISs and nine WMIs on the millennial-scale. • The CISs are consistent to the variation of Mid-high North Atlantic environment. • The WMIs over MIS12 presented anti-phased relationship with Antarctic temperature. • This research confirms that the millennial scale climate variation before the MBE is a continuous feature. Biochronology is the most widely used method for organizing the successions of continental vertebrate faunas in geological time and for allowing the correlation of continental deposits. However, due to the fragmentary nature of the paleontological record and the diachronicity of first and last occurrences of vertebrate taxa in different areas (i.e., bioevents), it is difficult to precisely define the temporal boundaries between biochronological units. That is why it is crucial to calibrate biochronological data with independent proxies wherever possible. Here, thanks to an interdisciplinary approach that combines sedimentology and stratigraphy, vertebrate paleontology, micropaleontology (ostracods), palynology, and geochronology, we provide a chronological framework and a paleoenvironmental reconstruction of the paleontological site of Pantalla (Central Italy). The combination between biochronological/biostratigraphic and geochronological (U-series/ESR dating and paleomagnetism) data allows us to refer the site to c. 2.2 Ma, i.e., in the transition phase between the Middle and Late Villafranchian in the European biochronological scheme. We reconstruct the environment as a fluvial area with a frequently flooded wet floodplain and marked (probably seasonal) variations of the water level of the channel river. Despite the links of Asian monsoon with climates at high northern and southern latitudes, it remains unclear that at which time and to what extent the Asian monsoon variation is dominated by one of the two drivers throughout a Greenland Stadial (GS) to Greenland Interstadial (GI) cycle. Here we provide a Chinese stalagmite δ 18 O record to study their teleconnections throughout the GS-6 to GI-5.2 cycle. The resemblance between the stalagmite and Greenland records, in timing, duration and abruptness of GI-5.2, supports that the occurrence and termination of GIs are paced by the northern driving force. During the intervals of GI-5.2 and GS-6, however, the Asian monsoon fluctuated concomitantly with variation in temperature over Antarctica, instead of over Greenland. This covariation indicates dominant influences of the Antarctic climate during the climatically stable intervals of stadials and interstadials. Résumé Dans le cadre de cette étude, la chronologie de plusieurs gisements intralœssiques du Paléolithique supérieur et moyen, situés en Moldavie, en Dobrogea et dans la plaine orientale du Danube, a été réexaminée et précisée en s’appuyant sur de nouvelles données chronologiques (dates IRSL sur lœss et dates ESR/U-Th sur dents) ainsi que sur des arguments biostratigraphiques et pédostratigraphiques. Des témoins d’occupation du Paléolithique moyen ont été mis au jour dans le lœss L2 du SIM 6 (épisode interstadiaire), le pédocomplexe S2 du SIM 7 et le pédocomplexe de sols rougeâtres S3 vraisemblablement attribué au SIM 9. Ces résultats nous amènent à reconsidérer l’étendue chronologique du Paléolithique moyen de Roumanie qui jusqu’au début des années 2000 (Păunescu, 1999a, b ; Cârciumaru, 1999) était limitée au Pléistocène supérieur (chronologie courte : 130–35 ka ; SIM 5-SIM 3). In the present study, the chronology of several intraloessic Upper and Middle Palaeolithic sites, located in Moldova, Dobrogea and the eastern Danube Plain, is re-examined and better defined on the basis of new chronological data (IRSL ages on loess, ESR/U-Th ages on teeth) and also biostratigraphic and pedostratigraphic evidence. Middle Palaeolithic occupations have been identified in the MIS 6 loess L2 (interstadial episode), the MIS 7 pedocomplex S2 and the red soils S3 presumably assigned to MIS 9. These results are questioning the chronological extension of the Middle Palaeolithic in Romania which until early 2000 (Păunescu, 1999 a, b; Cârciumaru, 1999) was restricted to the Upper Pleistocene (short chronology: 130–35 ka; MIS 5-MIS 3). Hence, we demonstrate herein that Humans were already present during the Middle Pleistocene at the eastern periphery of the Carpathian Mountains, along the Danube valley and its tributary, the Prut River. Multi-proxy analysis of abrupt climate change during Ice Age Termination III (T-III) is necessary to understand Asian summer monsoon (ASM) characteristics and mechanisms. We present 230Th dates and δ 18O, δ 13C, with equilibrium diameter, carbonate deposition amount and lithological characteristics from an annually laminated stalagmite (No. YXB) in Yongxing Cave, central China. Our multi-proxy records span 243.90 to 239.20 ka before present, falling within T-III/Marine Isotope Stage 7e. The changes in δ 18O, equilibrium diameter, carbonate deposition amount, and lithological characteristics suggest a weak ASM interval during T III. By comparing these results with records from Ice Age Termination I (T-I), we find that the weakened ASM event during T-III is similar to the Younger Dryas (YD) event in terms of duration and structure. This result suggests that the YD-like event could be an inherent feature of glacial-interglacial climate cycles in the middle and late Pleistocene. Longgupo cave, located in Chongqing Municipality, China, was discovered in 1984. Sixteen Gigantopithecus teeth and two hominid fossils accompanied with abundant mammalian fossils and stone artifacts were unearthed from the site. Previous dating result is questioned because of the complexity of deposition history. In this study, seventeen mammalian fossil teeth collected from different layers of unit C II and C III (C III′) during the 2003–2006 Sino-Franco joint excavation were analyzed by combined ESR and U-series methods, and calculated with a US-ESR model. In situ dose rates were remeasured in detail in 2012, in order to refine the external dose rate determination. Uranium-series analyses indicate that no obvious uranium leaching has occurred, and all the teeth underwent a very recent uranium uptake history, except one from layer C III 3 of the south wall. The US-ESR results show that the ages of ten teeth from unit C III′ of the north wall are consistent in general, about 2.35 Ma. The ages of seven samples from south wall are not in accordance with the stratigraphic order: three teeth are much younger than the other four, probably attributed to the relative higher uranium concentration and U/Th ratio in the dental tissues and significant higher in situ gamma dose rate. Nevertheless, the three teeth from C III of the south wall give an average age of ∼ 2.48 Ma. The fossil ages obtained in this work combined with paleontological evidence and new paleomagnetic results place Longgupo at the very beginning of the Early Pleistocene. The Asian hydroclimate variability during the early and middle Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 was reconstructed from a high-resolution stalagmite δ18O record from Qixing Cave in southern China, which exhibited an extraordinarily strong precessional cycle. When compared with other cave records (mostly) from East Asia, covering a latitudinal transect from 23° to 38°N, it can be found that the magnitude of precessional-scale stalagmite δ18O variations decreases when the latitude increases, approximately from 3‰ to 1‰. In contrast, the amplitude of Heinrich stadials (HSs) in these stalagmite δ18O records enhances with increasing latitudes, from 1‰ to 2‰, reflecting an alleviated effect of high-latitude climate changes on the low-latitude hydroclimate, or a relative contribution from Westerlies-borne and near-sourced 18O-enriched moisture at northern China. In southern China, orbital-scale changes in stalagmite δ18O closely match variations of the atmospheric CH 4 concentration and δ18O of the atmospheric O 2 , suggesting a coherent response of low-latitude ecological and hydrological processes. In addition, a weaker precessional cycle in northern China is possibly related to the relative supply of near-sourced moisture source, where the Westerly wind can exert a substantial role. Therefore, precessional to millennial-scale changes in East Asian stalagmite δ18O records could be further modulated by local processes, rendering them a spatially contrasting trait. The archaeological site of Guado San Nicola (Monteroduni, Central Italy), under excavation since 2008, is located in the Upper Volturno Valley, near the top of a fluvial terrace attributed to the Middle Pleistocene. Several anthropic levels have been recognized within a stratigraphic sequence of more than two meters in thickness, characterized by alternating gravelly and sandy fluvial layers rich in pyroclastic materials, attributable to the end of MIS 11–beginning of MIS 10, according to the obtained radiometric dates ( 40 Ar/ 39 Ar and ESR/U-series). In this paper we discuss the chrono-stratigraphic record, the paleontological and zooarchaeological data and we provide a detailed techno-economic analysis of the lithic industry, characterized by the coexistence of handaxes and Levallois debitage. The site of Guado San Nicola represents the oldest evidence of the emergence of prepared-core technologies in the Italian Peninsula, adding new data to the debate on the Lower/Middle Palaeolithic transition in Western Europe. We present two isotopic (δ 18 O and δ 13 C) sequences of a twin-stalagmite from Zhuliuping Cave, southwestern China, with 230 Th dates from 14.6 to 4.6 ka. The stalagmite δ 18 O record characterizes orbital- to decadal-scale variability of Asian summer monsoon (ASM) intensity, with the Holocene optimum period (HOP) between 9.8 and 6.8 ka BP which is reinforced by its co-varying δ 13 C data. The large multi-decadal scale amplitude of the cave δ 18 O indicates its high sensitivity to climate change. Four centennial-scale weak ASM events during the early Holocene are centered at 11.2, 10.8, 9.1 and 8.2 ka. They can be correlated to cold periods in the northern high latitudes, possibly resulting from rapid dynamics of atmospheric circulation associated with North Atlantic cooling. The 8.2 ka event has an amplitude more than two-thirds that of the Younger Dryas (YD), and is significantly stronger than other cave records in the Asia monsoon region, likely indicating a more severe dry climate condition at the cave site. At the end of the YD event, the δ 13 C record lags the δ 18 O record by 300–500 yr, suggesting a multi-centennial slow response of vegetation and soil processes to monsoon enhancement. ESR dating was applied to fossil teeth and optically bleached quartz grain samples from two units of the sequence at Vallparadís (Barcelona, Spain): weighted mean ESR age estimates of 858 ± 87 ka and 849 ± 48 ka were obtained for EVT-7, which includes the archaeological level 10, and EVT-8, respectively. These results are in good agreement with the existing magneto-biostratigraphic framework that constrain these deposits between 780 and 990 ka, and indicate that Vallparadís EVT-7 has a chronology very close to that of Atapuerca Gran Dolina TD-6 (Spain). The skeletons of aragonitic corals carry essential information about oceanic environmental changes in the past. However, coral-based geochemical proxies are sensitive to vital effect and post-depositional diagenetic processes, which have not been well understood for deep-sea corals. In this study, we have investigated the mineralization and early diagenetic process of the dendroid stem of a dead deep-sea scleractinian coral sample (Madrepora oculata) collected by Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) from a seamount in the Caroline Ridge, western Pacific. Despite being only ~270 years old, as dated by the U-series disequilibrium method, this sample already has extensive diagenesis including a visible chalky layer. The outermost chalky layer and the adjacent pristine skeleton of the sample were characterized by multiple mineralogical (SEM, XRD, EBSD, Raman Spectroscopy) and geochemical (ICP-OES, LA-ICP-MS, IR-MS, MC-ICP-MS) techniques. Skeletal stable C and O isotopes display strong linearity, with a trend pointing toward the theoretical isotopic composition of inorganically-precipitated aragonite from local seawater. This observation suggests that the epithecal mineralization of M. oculata is far from equilibrium with seawater and can be quantitatively explained by bio-mineralization models developed for solitary scleractinian corals. We further show that chalking of the outer layer, a common feature in sub-fossilized deep-sea corals, is caused by microbial-driven boring and μm-scale dissolution voids at an average rate of 3.5 μmol/cm2/y (scaled to the skeleton surface) without notable secondary infillings or mineralogical alternations. The higher average δ13C and δ18O of the chalky part than the pristine part might be due to the preferential dissolution of carbonate relatively depleted in 13C and 18O during alteration, and/or reduced isotope fractionation from seawater during coral mineralization of the outer layer. The chalky layer shows significantly higher Mn/Ca and Th/Ca ratios than the pristine part, characterized by Th/Mn ratios similar to that of the dissolved component of local seawater. Our study suggests that the incorporation of external Th into the coral skeleton is most likely associated with organic binding rather than detrital contamination, secondary carbonate mineral formation, adsorption onto surfaces of chalky aragonite or ferromanganese oxides, with important implications for coral U-series geochronology. Meteorological observations indicate that both natural and anthropogenic forcing contribute to regional drought/flood in the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) domain. However, spatiotemporal rainfall pattern and its dynamics during natural climatic variability remains unclear. Here we reconstruct a ∼3 year-resolution EASM precipitation record over the past two millennia, based on 13 230Th dates and 600 δ18O in a stalagmite from Songya Cave, southeastern China. The δ18O sequence shows a long-term decreasing trend, indicating an increasing monsoon precipitation over the past two millennia. A series of centennial-scale fluctuations are superimposed on the long-term trend, with a wetter Little Ice Age than the Medieval Warm Period. The long-term trend and centennial-scale oscillations in EASM rainfall are broadly related to El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) variations, with an increased (decreased) EASM rainfall corresponding to El Niño-like (La Niña-like) conditions and positive (negative) phase of PDO. Comparison of δ18O records from Songya and Wanxiang Cave shows an anti-phased spatial rainfall pattern between southeastern and northwestern China. Climate reconstructions over the last millennium are essential to estimate natural and anthropogenic forcing. Here we present a stalagmite δ18O record from southwestern China, which characterizes changes in the Asian Summer Monsoon (ASM) precipitation over the past 1350 years. Wet climate is clearly identified during the Dark Age Cold Period (DACP) and Little Ice Age (LIA); dry climate is clearly identified during the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) and Current Warm Period (CWP). These precipitation oscillations, except that over the CWP, are remarkably similar to, but strongly antiphase with, those in northwestern China. Over the CWP, our δ18O record, similar to other stalagmite records in East Asia, also exhibits a gradually increasing trend. This trend has been assumed to be caused by anthropogenic temperature warming. Here a better correlation is identified between our record and atmospheric temperature change during the preindustrial and industrial eras. This correlation provides solid evidence for the consistent modulation of the temperature on the ASM precipitation without and with the human-induced forcing. However, this modulation may act in a different manner during the industrial era, which results in the same δ18O variation across East Asia. A continuous high-resolution record from a precisely-dated stalagmite spanning the last precessional cycle provides new insight into the dynamics of climate change from orbital to centennial scales. A 600-mm length stalagmite (LS46) collected from the Luoshui Cave, Hubei Province, Central China, was well-dated (a total of 24 230Th dates) and high-resolved sampled for oxygen and carbon stable isotopic measurements (2047 subsamples in total). The stalagmite LS46 δ18O is consistent with other published stalagmite δ18O time series in monsoonal China, and closely tracks changes in the Northern Hemisphere summer insolation (NHSI) on July 21st throughout the past 23.5 kyr. Besides, the stalagmite LS46 δ18O shows significant correlations with the reconstructed Dali lake-level history and tree-ring δ18O records in the marginal monsoon regions. On this basis, we interpret that the stalagmite LS46 δ18O reflects the large-scale monsoon circulation with a superimposed local climate signal that might be related to effective humidity. Furthermore, the stalagmite LS46 δ18O exhibited four long-lasting extremely weak monsoon events since 7 kyr B.P.. These four weak monsoon events corresponded well with the tree-ring record in the northwestern fringe of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) region. Notably, the good correspondence between the stalagmite record and the tree-ring record also provides a good chronological support for our assessment of the climate and cultural evolution during the middle-late Holocene transition, the medieval warm period (MWP) and Little Ice Age (LIA). During the early-middle Holocene, the detrended δ18O profile revealed 10 multi-centennial monsoon cycles with a duration of nearly 500 yr and the amplitude of ∼0.8‰. The wavelet analysis further discloses that the EASM has nearly 500 yr and 200 yr periodic oscillations in the early-middle Holocene, research indicated that the solar activity and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO)/North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) jointly drive the dominant nearly 500 yr cycle of the Asian monsoon. • A successive stalagmite δ18O/δ13C series from Central China over the past 23.5 kyr. • Stalagmite δ18O coincides with tree ring δ18O and lake level. • LS46 δ18O records 4 weak monsoon events since 7 kyr B.P. and corresponds well to the tree ring data in NW China. • ∼500 yr periodicity of AM during the Early-Mid Holocene was forced by solar activity and the NAO. Paleolithic rock paintings are known from many parts of the world, including Africa, Australia, Europe and Island Southeast Asia. However, no Paleolithic rock paintings have yet been confirmed in the East Asia mainland, partly due to the lack of suitable dating materials. The rock paintings distributed at more than 70 sites in the Jinsha River valley, Yunnan Province, southwestern China, include the naturalistic outlines of large mammals, which superficially resemble the Magdalenian rock art in Europe. Wanrendong Cave in Tiger Leaping Gorge, has preserved typical Jinsha River rock paintings, associated with some precipitates of secondary carbonates (i.e., speleothem). High precision U-series dating of 13 small speleothems, with a total of 36 subsamples overlying or underlying the pigment layers, revealed that these red paintings were created during the Pleistocene – Holocene transition, representing the oldest absolutely dated rock paintings from China so far. Our results show that at least three painting phases in Wanrendong Cave can be precisely constrained: ∼13,000–13,580 yr B.P., ∼10,540–10,830 yr B.P., and ∼8370–8700 yr B.P. These intervals are substantially earlier than the timing of agriculture in Yunnan Province (∼4600 yr BP), indicating that these paintings were created by Paleolithic hunter-gatherers.
